Carl Krauser: X Up (Former Pitt Panther & Pro)07 Jun 202101:21:14

Send us a text

All love and respect in this episode. We got perhaps the most passionate and energetic guest that we have ever had on this show today. The Ol’ Black Magic himself is in the house! Carl Krauser takes the time to hang out and share his hoops story with us in an episode full of love, laughs, and amazing stories that we know you’ll enjoy.

Krauser grew up in The Bronx NY and is proud of it. You may remember him from throwing up the X after a big time play in a crucial moment on the biggest stage. He was a fearless competitor and without a doubt played with a huge heart. He starred at Pitt where he was the Big East Most Improved Player of the Year as a sophomore, and was 3x All Big East and 2x All Big East Tourney. He went on to have great success overseas and clearly still has that same passion and love for the game. Most importantly, like us he is all about spreading positive energy to people and giving props to those who deserve the recognition. Krauser without a doubt deserves that same recognition.

Truly one of the best times we have had on this show. One of our funniest, most honest and passionate guests we have had and you will without a doubt leave this conversation learning a lot about the game, the business, the struggle, along with endless laughs. Respect his journey because it was far from an easy one, but the real ones know just how much he accomplished and we have a feeling his next chapter will be even greater with the passion this guy has.

Much love Carl Krauser and thank you!

X up!

Jerod Haase: Floor Burns (Stanford Men's Basketball Head Coach)28 May 202100:36:24

Send us a text

This one will give our local listeners chills. We have been wanting to do this episode for quite some time. We have South Tahoe High School legend & state champion Jerod Haase on the show today. This is our first local born guest on the show today and it did NOT disappoint!

Jerod Haase starred at South Tahoe High School where he played for coach Tom Orlich. They won the state championship together his senior year in 1992 where they beat a great Western High School team led by Prince Fowler. To this day it is recognized as one of the greatest state championship victories ever by a Northern team. Haase went on to play one season at Cal on a team led by Jason Kidd & Lamond Murray before transferring to Kansas. He led the team in scoring his first season on a team that featured a roster of future NBA players Raef Lafrentz, Jacque Vaughn, Greg Ostertag, Scot Pollard and Billy Thomas. Haase is also the author of the book Floor Burns, and is the current coach of the Stanford Men’s Basketball team. We are honored to learn all about his hoops journey and hear great stories about South Tahoe’s title run, his college career, Roy Williams, Tom Orlich, experience playing prefessionally overseas, Floor Burns, Stanford Basketball and MUCH more.

It was a pleasure hanging out with Coach Haase and we can’t thank him enough for his time. He was truly one of the most passionate and hardest working players this area has ever seen, and we love that his passion has carried over to the sidelines not only in basketball, but also in education and life. This was an honor and we know you’ll appreciate this one too.

Thanks Coach Haase!

Joseph Forte: Former UNC & NBA Player21 May 202101:05:30

Our true basketball fans will really appreciate this episode. We are starting off the weekend right with one of the most dynamic scorers who made it look REAL easy, especially during his high school and college days. Joseph Forte takes the time to chop it up and share his story with us.

Forte starred at DeMatha High School where he played under the legendary coach, Morgan Wootten. He was a McDonald’s All-American and went on to play 2 years at North Carolina where he was named the ACC Rookie of the Year, first-team All-American, and ACC co-Player of the Year. He also helped lead UNC to a very memorable Final Four run. He was selected 21st overall by the Boston Celtics in the 2001 NBA Draft and had a great career that included stops in both the NBA and overseas. He shares great stories about his time at UNC, journey to the NBA, experience overseas, Morgan Wootten, Bill Guthridge, Gary Payton, Ray Allen, Baron Davis, Jeremy Pargo, Sofoklis Schortsanitis and MUCH more.

It was an absolute pleasure to learn from Joseph Forte and we can’t thank him enough for sharing his hoops story with us. In this episode we relive some memorable moments that will also really help the young hoopers coming up. His game always stood out on the big stage, but the man he is today is what stands out the most. We know you’ll enjoy this one!

Tom Van Arsdale - Indiana Legend & 3x NBA All-Star03 May 202101:25:09

Send us a text

What an honor this episode was. So much history and basketball nostalgia in this one as Tom Van Arsdale takes the time to share his basketball experiences with us. This may be the most unique episode of them all as this is the first guest we have had from the golden era of high school, collegiate and professional basketball.

Tom Van Arsdale and his identical twin brother Dick Van Arsdale starred at Emmerich Manual High School and both went on to play for legendary coach Branch McCracken at Indiana University. They would go on to be drafted back-to-back in the 1965 NBA Draft and again play together in 1976-77 for the Phoenix Suns for their final NBA season. They were both 3x All-Stars and are the first brothers to play in an NBA All-Star game. You could say they’re fairly similar. Tom still holds the NBA record for most career games played without a playoff appearance. He played 929 games without making a single playoff appearance. Van Arsdale is also the highest scoring player (14,232 career points) in NBA history without a playoff appearance. Even though Tom never did play in a playoff game, he has some amazing and historic experiences that he shares including amazing stories about the high school hoops scene in Indiana, Bobby Plump, Branch McCracken, his time as a Hoosier, journey to NBA, playing with Oscar Robertson, Tiny Archibald, Wilt Chamberlain, the NBA lifestyle in the 60’s, Van Arsdale Art, his book and MUCH more.

There is truly no episode quite like this one and we can’t thank Tom enough for his time. It’s rare to have the opportunity to speak with an All-Star from the golden era of basketball and learn about some of the all-time greats from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. It was fascinating to learn from his experiences and took us back in time to hear about how different the league, the business and the game was and how it has evolved. We also have a surprise appearance from another former All-Star in this episode… bet you can’t guess who!

Thanks Tom Van Arsdale!

Julius Page: Former Pitt Panther & Pro19 Apr 202101:03:59

Send us a text

We have a special treat for all of you college basketball fans. We’ve got our first former Pittsburgh Panther player on the show today! Julius Page drops in and shares his hoops story. We get a great feel for what those bruising Big East battles were like and get caught up on his career after his days at Pitt.

Page was Ben Howland’s very first recruit at Pittsburgh for a rebuilding program. The left-handed combo guard with an easy 40-inch vertical leap helped put Pittsburgh on the map and had his opponents finding themselves on the wrong side of a highlight. Page was the 2003 Big East Tournament MVP and went on to play professionally in the ABA, CBA, and overseas. We got to hear all about the journey, including some incredible stories about his time playing overseas.

Julius Page was a joy to have on our show and we can’t thank him enough for his time. He played in our favorite era of Big East hoops and he was a big reason why. Beyond the lockdown defense, exciting highlight reels and basketball in general, we can see why he was a fan favorite and so loved during his 4 years at Pitt.

Thank you Julius Page!

Dr. Nick Elam: The Elam Ending14 Apr 202101:18:05

Send us a text

The Elam Ending has brought a lot of excitement to the game of basketball. This rule has helped the TBT grow into what it is today and contributed to the 2020 NBA Allstar game becoming one of the most competitive Allstar games we have seen in years. I’m sure many of you have wondered where this idea came from and how it originated, but now you get to learn all about it from the creator himself. Dr. Nick Elam joins us today to share his story and the exact origins and skeletons of the Elam Ending.

Dr. Nick Elam has a strong love for the game of basketball. Some have been critical of his idea, but those who have either played or seen the Elam Ending in action have become believers in it and agree it can help better the game of basketball. The research and numbers that Elam has to backup his vision is pretty remarkable. He will have an educated and eye-opening response to every argument brought up, even for those who love their memorable buzzer beaters or don’t like seeing games end on free throws.

This conversation was a true honor for us. We of course loved learning all about the dedication, time and effort put into the Elam Ending, but we also got to learn more about Dr. Nick Elam himself. Like any game decided on an Elam Ending, this episode won’t disappoint.

Chris Herren: Just One (Former NBA Player & Wellness Advocate) 09 Apr 202101:20:37

Send us a text

It’s very difficult to describe in a short summary how much this episode means to us. Chris Herren joins us on the podcast today for an episode that is a must-listen. This is a conversation that could potentially change lives as many of his previous powerful speeches have done already.

Herren was a standout player at Durfee High School. At one point he was a Top 10 Nationally ranked player, Gatorade New England Player of the Year two years straight, Boston Globe Massachusetts Player of the Year three years straight, and 1994 McDonald’s All American. Unfortunately, along with the many accolades was a substance abuse problem. Herren was selected by the Denver Nuggets in the 1999 NBA Draft even after multiple failed drug tests during his college career. In our conversation today, Herren shares the struggles and dark times that eventually ended his basketball career and put his life in jeopardy.

The story of Chris Herren could have easily had a tragic ending, but he is now accomplishing things that are far more impressive than anything he has done on the court. Herren has been sober since August 1st, 2008. He’s become one of the most powerful and impactful voices for wellness and recovery, telling his story and raising awareness across the world. He has funded the non-profit Herren Project where Chris and his team help schools and communities make healthy choices while helping families through recovery. He also founded Herren Wellness that helps people live healthy, substance-free lives.

We love Chris Herren and can’t thank him enough for this time. His ability to connect with others and educate is beyond incredible. This episode is special to us and we know these conversations will reach someone in need. Chris’s words always do.

Thank you Chris Herren.

In the 16 countries that we are currently charting in, we hope that this conversation can reach at least one person. At least just one.

Mike Illiano: GM of TBT's Team 2305 Apr 202101:02:52

Send us a text

We’ve got a special treat for all of you hoop heads and TBT fans. For the first time on this show we get to pick the brain of a GM. We are blessed to have Mike Illiano on the podcast today. He is a great basketball mind, writer, GM and truly a historian of the game.

Illiano’s path into basketball is very inspiring to us. When you really look at the big picture, this is a guy who didn’t actually play the game but developed a strong passion and love for it and still found his place in basketball. That passion led him to studying and writing about the game and eventually getting involved with the TBT where he had an immediate impact with Team 23, cruising all the way to the Championship game in 2015. We get to learn all about the startup of TBT and how Mike got involved. He shares some great stories about the meaning behind the name Team 23, building a successful roster, former guest Larry Owens, Doug Gottleib, and we get a great idea of just how much the TBT actually means to everyone involved and all of the great causes these teams play for.

This summary can’t even begin to describe how much we appreciate Mike Illiano's time. We really get a good idea of what it’s like to see the game through the lens of a GM and we learn all about what makes the TBT such an incredible league. We know that you will have a different view and appreciation for the players and everyone involved in the TBT, the sacrifices they make, and the impact they are having on the game and other leagues across the world.

Thank You Mike Illiano!

Be sure to support Team 23, the TBT and all of the other teams who are playing for such great causes.

Paul Hiepler: Horns Down! - Abilene Christian Senior02 Apr 202101:02:46

Send us a text

We had to do it. You may know him as the “Horns Down Guy” or simply the hype man in one of this year’s top cinderella stories in the NCAA Tournament. Well, now we’re the hyped ones because we got Abilene Christian University and March Madness fan-favorite Paul Hiepler on the podcast! Don’t worry, it’s just as awesome as you’d expect it to be.

Hiepler has been in the national spotlight both on social media and in the basketball world ever since Abilene Christian University upset Texas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Of course the world went crazy over the “Horns Down” and pump-up memes, but we wanted to really dive into the importance of his role and just how effective his leadership and energy was to this team’s success. It’s easy to talk about the 20-point per night guys, but we truly embrace the guys who push those 20-point per night guys every single day in practice and bring that same energy when it matters most.

We loved our time with Paul. The boxscore will never show just how valuable and important he was to this program’s success over the last 4 years, but we hope this episode will shine some light on it. We also hope our listeners will have a whole different appreciation not only for Paul’s role, but also for Abilene Christian University and the amazing obstacles this group had to overcome on their road to success. Paul and Abilene Christian University may have busted your bracket, but they also earned your respect. After talking to Paul, he forever has ours and we know you’re going to love this one!

Thank you Paul Hiepler!

Kane Ma: Former UNC & ABL Player - Stop Asian Hate29 Mar 202101:06:06

Send us a text

We of course love talking hoops on this show, but this episode is about more than just basketball. Kane Ma joins us today to chop it up about his hoops experience and share more about his story which has drawn much attention across the world. It is an absolute honor to learn more about him and his journey, and to help raise awareness to Stop Asian Hate.

There are a lot of layers to this story. Ma was cut from his middle school team and again in high school as a Junior. Most would quit at that point, but Ma transferred high schools to continue his hoops dreams. He passed on a few basketball offers from smaller schools to go to North Carolina for academics. He put the work in on UNC’s JV team until finally earning a roster spot as a senior. He then went on to play in the ABL after his time as a Tar Heel. We loved learning about his background, UNC’s JV team, his UNC debut, Roy Williams, and the ABL. But we also learned more about the racially motivated attack on him. It’s not an easy conversation to process, but it’s a very important one and we truly admire him being so open, honest and strong about it.

The strength Ma has shown to come out and share his story is making a difference across the world in helping raise awareness to stop Asian hate. We are truly honored to have this opportunity to allow him to share his experience in his own words and answer the questions we had to help educate our listeners on how we can all be better moving forward. You will learn quite a bit from Kane Ma today. We know we did.

Thank you Kane Ma!

Larry Owens: Former NBA & Oral Roberts Alumni26 Mar 202100:49:10

Send us a text

You guys asked us to get an Oral Roberts alumni so we had no choice but to go out and get one! Former ORU star Larry Owens is in the house and what better time to have him on than during the incredible cinderella run to the Sweet 16 by the Golden Eagles? We get to catch up with Larry, learn about his hoops journey, and hear his thoughts on his Alma Mater’s NCAA tournament performance.

Owens started his college career by going the JuCo route. After being Top 10 in scoring and rebounding at the Junior College level, he signed with Oral Roberts where he won MCC Defensive Player of the Year and helped lead ORU to an NCAA tournament appearance in 2006. After not hearing his name called in the NBA Draft, he spent time between the D-League and Overseas before finding his way in the NBA. He even helped his team to a championship appearance in the TBT. He’s truly seen it all and has always been a team-first guy, which is why he has always found a place in basketball. Even today he’s found his place on the sidelines as a coach.

BIG thanks to Larry for taking the time to hang out with us. It was a joy learning all about the grind to reach his goals and it's an inspiring message for any young hooper coming up and trying to find their way whether it be JuCo, a four-year, or professionally. He shares some great stories about his time at ORU, NCAA tournament, playing overseas, Scott Sutton, Tim Duncan, Paul Pierce, coaching and MUCH more. One thing we have learned this month… those Oral Roberts boys are tough and never give up…even the OG’s.

Thank You Larry Owens!

Be sure to support Larry’s club team! The passion he has for the game and the love those girls play with is well worth supporting. Send us a text

It’s the middle of March Madness and what better guest to have on the show than someone who has experienced the tournament both as a player and a coach? Matt Doherty is in the house today and it’s an honor to have him! In this episode we discuss his experiences as a player, a coach, and also his book Rebound: From Pain to Passion

Doherty was a key member of those UNC teams that included winning the 1982 National Championship on a team featuring Sam Perkins, James Worthy, Michael Jordan, and legendary coach Dean Smith. He was then drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 6th round of the 1984 NBA Draft. He later continued his basketball journey as a coach that included stops with Notre Dame, FAU, SMU, and his Alma Mater North Carolina Tar Heels. This episode is a special one, especially for all of you current or aspiring coaches out there. You will get a preview of some of the valuable lessons included in his book as well as an idea of the time and effort he put in to writing it.

We are very honored for the opportunity to learn from Coach Doherty today. This is a conversation that we feel will better you as a person, player, coach and a leader. We know you will enjoy this one just as much as we did, and it is just a small sample size of what you will read about in his book so be sure to check it out! Jordan Lewis III: Stay Focused, Stay Ready17 Mar 202100:44:06

Send us a text

Many of us are getting ready to fill out our brackets and watch March Madness. March is truly one of the most exciting months in all of sports once the NCAA tournament starts up. I know that we are all excited for the upcoming games, but some of us need to take a moment and realize that not all college athletes and college programs got to have their season. For Jordan Lewis III, all he can do during these times is to stay focused and stay ready.

Jordan Lewis III is a Brooklyn native with basketball in his blood. His father played professionally overseas and he’s been hooping since he can even remember. He earned the nickname “Silent Assassin” on the court because he just lets his game do his talking. He grinded through the Junior College ranks and has earned a spot at a 4 year with Morrisville State. Like many others, Morrisville State did not get to participate in practices or games this season due to Covid 19. This has not stopped Lewis III from continuing to work on his game to accomplish his goals of playing high-level college basketball with aspirations to continue to play professionally. Jordan shares a little about his background, how he developed both his work ethic and love for the game, what he learned from JuCo, and the struggles that athletes are currently going through during the pandemic.

It was a joy speaking with Jordan Lewis III today. He has a great understanding of what needs to be done in order to accomplish his goals. Most coaches have told Jordan that he has all of the tools to play at the highest level of basketball... he just need his opportunity to show it and once he does you just may be hearing about the “Silent Assassin” quite a bit.

Thank You Jordan Lewis III !

Oscar Schmidt: The Holy Hand (Basketball's All-Time Leading Scorer & Hall of Famer)09 Mar 202101:09:23

Send us a text

We have a legend, basketball royalty, and an all-time great in the house today. He is known as the Holy Hand and it is a true honor to have Hall of Famer Oscar Schmidt hang out and share his hoops story with us. The love, passion, and loyalty that he showed on the court to his teammates, country, and the game of basketball is now told in his own words.

Oscar Schmidt is without a doubt one of the greatest players to ever play the game. We can’t possibly include all of his achievements in this summary because they are truly endless. He has scored over 49,000 career points with the most points in FIBA, Olympics, and even all of basketball history. Oscar helped lead Brazil to a historic victory over the USA in the 1987 Pan Am games where he torched the Americans scoring 35 of his 46 points in the second half. This game was considered one of the main reasons why the 1992 Dream Team was formed. Oscar was selected in that legendary 1984 NBA Draft but chose not to play out of loyalty to his country so he could play for his National Team instead. Players such as Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant and many others idolized Oscar, and any NBA great knows what an incredible player he was.

Our time with Oscar was life-changing. He shared some incredible stories about growing up in Brazil, playing for the National Team, defeating the USA, The 92 Dream Team, Kobe Bryant, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, playing for the Nets in the Summer League, the story behind the nickname “The Holy Hand”, Hall of Fame, and MUCH more. We can’t say enough how much this conversation meant to us and how special of an experience this was to learn from an all-time great. We know you will appreciate this one just as much as we did.

Thank you Oscar Schmidt!

Ricky Pierce: Deuces (NBA Allstar & 2x Sixth Man of the Year)02 Mar 202100:54:06

Send us a text

No one has averaged more points per game off the bench in NBA History. He was a walking bucket and the premier Sixth man of the NBA for years. Ricky Pierce is in the house today and it is an honor to learn about his journey to carving out a successful 16 year NBA career.

Pierce was known for his incredible work ethic. He was a standout player at Rice where he averaged nearly 27 points and 8 rebounds during his senior season. He was selected 18th overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 1982 NBA Draft. He was a 2x Sixth Man of the Year Award winner and was named to the NBA Allstar Team in 1990-91. Pierce’s average of 23 points per game remains the highest scoring average off the bench without starting a game in NBA History and he accomplished this in only averaging 29 minutes per game. Pierce shares incredible stories about shifting from the Forward position to a Guard, adjusting to the Sixth man role, All Star experience, Don Nelson, Edgar Jones, Bill Walton, Playing overseas, and MUCH more.

We loved our time with Ricky Pierce. His work ethic and ability to thrive in that Sixth man role is something that we truly admire. We can’t thank him enough for being so gracious with his time and for sharing his basketball experiences. We know you will enjoy this one just as much as we did.

Thank You Ricky Pierce!

Jason McElwain: J-Mac "Hot as a Pistol"26 Feb 202100:34:08

Send us a text

It has been just over 15 years since this incredible story touched those across the world. It’s a story that has stuck with us ever since it first made national news so we had to hear it from the man himself. Jason McElwain is in the house today to share his journey and the best part is it’s truly just getting started.

J-Mac was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3 and was told that he would never walk or talk. He overcame all odds and had a strong love for the game of basketball. Admired and respected by both coaches and teammates alike,he was named team manager at Greece Athena High School where he gladly accepted the position to do anything he could to help better the team. The last game of the regular season he was rewarded for his hard work and got an opportunity to play. J-Mac was “hot as a pistol” and scored 20 points in 4 minutes including six 3-pointers. His performance became a national story that was both emotional and inspirational. He won an ESPY award to go along with many other accolades. J-Mac to this day still puts the team before any of his fame which shows the coach in him. He currently is coaching high school basketball, and is an accomplished runner, author, and speaker. There truly is nothing J-Mac doesn’t do.

Our time with J-Mac was incredible. We really enjoyed hearing about that amazing 20-point night and everything he has done since. He has been such an inspiration to the autism community and many others across the world. J-Mac continues to to follow his passion and we can’t wait to see whats in store next.

Thank you Jason McElwain!

Jonathan Tavernari: Bishop Gorman & BYU Alumni23 Feb 202101:23:35

Send us a text

This one is special for many different reasons and fan bases. Our local Reno and Vegas listeners will absolutely remember how big time of a player he was at Bishop Gorman, whereas our BYU fan base will remember him for his sacrifices to better the team. Jonathan Tavernari is in the house today and we are excited to have him!

His mother is a legendary hoops coach who helped push him to be considered as the top high school player to ever come out of Brazil. He moved to America where he starred at Bishop Gorman. He went on to have an outstanding career at BYU where he earned MWC Freshman of the year, and All-MWC Third Team in both his sophomore and junior seasons while also setting a program record both years for three points made. He sacrificed his starting spot to be the team’s 6th man during his senior season where he earned the MWC 6th man of the year. Tavernari finished his career at BYU as the winningest player in school history and holds the school record for 3 pointers made. He has had continued great success playing overseas and for the Brazilian National Team.

We loved our time with Tavernari. He shared some great stories about growing up in Brazil, Oscar Schmidt, playing through the legal distractions at Bishop Gorman, State game vs Reno High School, BYU, experience overseas, his love for Vegas and MUCH more. One thing we learned is that he is as passionate as you get both on and off the court. He is a high character guy who always put others and the team before himself. JT always found a way on the court, but of off the court? We know the best is yet to come.

Thank you Jonathan Tavernari!

Dino Radja: Former Boston Celtic & Hall of Famer19 Feb 202100:59:35

Send us a text

It is an absolute honor to be able to say that we have a Hall of Famer on the podcast today. Dino Radja joins us to share his incredible hoops journey that started in Croatia and led him to be recognized as one of both FIBA’s 50 Greatest Players of All Time and FIBA’s Greatest EuroLeague Contributors, as well as being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Believe us when we say that you don’t want to miss this one!

Radja is our first guest who did not grow up in the US. It was interesting hearing about growing up in Croatia and his introduction to basketball when there were zero NBA games shown on TV at the time. We heard many great stories about growing up with Toni Kukoc, playing against the Dream Team, his time with the Boston Celtics, Reggie Lewis, being inducted into the Hall of Fame and MUCH more.

BIG thanks to Dino Radja for taking the time to hang out with us today. His resume obviously shows what an incredible player he was but it was also a pleasure to hear how passionate, funny, and generous he is as a person. We are BIG fans of Dino Radja the player, but even bigger fans of Dino Radja the person. We know you will all feel the same after listening to this one.

Thank you Dino Radja!

Robin Schreiber: Dance Cam Mom (Warriors Superfan)16 Feb 202100:50:11

Send us a text

Robin Schreiber is in the house today! Most of you will know her as the superfan of the Golden State Warriors. Her dancing videos went viral and caught the attention of fans not only around the league but across the world. She is known as the Dance Cam Mom or the Sweater Mom and it’s hard to find another fan who brings the same energy and passion to the stands every single game.

Robin is far from just a bandwagon fan. Her love for the Warriors dates all the way back to the Nate Thurmond and Rick Barry days. She has even attended some legendary games in some of those early warrior days. Just because it took years for the internet to catch on to her passion as a fan doesn’t mean it wasn’t always there. It was really a joy learning about her background, journey as a fan, the early Warrior years, title runs, best Warrior dancers, and MUCH more.

BIG thanks to Robin for taking the time to hang out with us and talk Warriors. She shared some great stories that we know all of our listeners will love. It was a joy to get to know her as a person and as one of the most passionate fans in the game.

Thank You Robin Schreiber!

Matthew Maurer: NBA Draft Historian (Creator of TheDraftReview.com)12 Feb 202101:05:16

Send us a text

We have an outstanding episode for all of you basketball nerds today. We have Matthew Maurer in the house! This episode is much different from our past ones and we mean that in the best way possible.

Maurer is an NBA Draft Historian who created the online basketball draft history database, TheDraftReview.com. He was also the Senior Scout for NBADraft.net. He has contributed to CBS Sports, Eurobasket, Vice Sports, NBA.com and ESPN. The research he’s done for the Draft Review is truly incredible and we get to hear all about how he got it started, some incredible stories when researching former players, draft history facts, and MUCH more.

We can’t thank Maurer enough for his time. We truly learned so much about the history of the NBA Draft and it was a joy hearing about some of the great lengths he went to research EVERY single player who was ever drafted. There is no episode quite like this one and it is hard to find others out there who truly love and appreciate both the history of the game and the players who paved the way like he does. We know you will agree after giving this one a listen.

Thank you Matthew Maurer!

Tony Farmer: Former San Jose State, Nebraska & NBA Player03 Feb 202100:50:40

Send us a text

Longevity is an underrated part of the game that we as fans often forget to take into consideration when we talk about successful professional basketball careers. To play 20+ years at any level is extremely impressive and it often doesn’t get the love and recognition that it deserves. Tony Farmer is one who carved out a long, admirable career at ALL levels across the world, including some time in the NBA and we got to hear all about it.

The Los Angeles native started his college basketball playing at San Jose State before transferring to Nebraska where they made an NCAA tournament appearance. Farmer still found his way to the NBA after going undrafted in the 1991 NBA Draft. He then went on to play several years overseas that included some hardware, being named to an All Decade Team and earning a championship.

We can’t thank Tony enough for being so gracious with his time. He has had so many unique experiences and we are blessed that he shared some amazing stories with us about his basketball journey. We enjoyed every minute of it and we know you will too!

Thank you Tony Farmer!

TJ Fredette: Brother of Jimmer Fredette25 Jan 202101:01:29

Send us a text

We as fans often make the mistake of thinking that a Jimmer Fredette highlight always started with a crossover, a no-look pass, a circus shot, or a ridiculous jumper in transition from well beyond the 3-point line. But really they started from hours in the gym and a lot of help from an older brother who pushed him and held him accountable. We know this to be true because it’s in writing and signed by the both of them.

TJ Fredette is in the house and it’s hands down one of the most motivational, inspirational, and loving stories we have had the honor to hear about. He’s the definition of a great older brother and a proud one too. We of course love Jimmer, but this episode is all about TJ and the unbelievable lengths he went to make sure he did everything he could to help his brother succeed. We also learned so much about TJ’s background, his intro to sports, music career, training, the TBT, and so much more. He does it all and we actually left this conversation asking ourselves if there is anything that TJ doesn’t do.

We can’t thank TJ enough for taking the time to hang out with us and share his story. This one will make you want to pick up a basketball and hug your loved ones. TJ is as high character as you get and you truly feel the brotherly love in this one.

Thank you TJ Fredette!

Angel Reyes: In Jesus Name I Play22 Jan 202100:46:43

Send us a text

We’ve had plenty of former NBA players and current professional players who have already reached their hoops dreams. This episode is special because we get to talk to someone who is in the very beginning stages of working towards that goal of making it to a 4-year school and continuing on to play professional basketball.

Angel Reyes is the first Mexican American to play basketball in New York and go on to play at the college level. You will hear more about him as his story is starting to grow through bigger media outlets. His connections to current and former NBA stars such as Kyrie Irving, Rod Strickland, and many others have been instrumental in his game, mindset, and just life in general. You will not hear of many other collegiate athletes that are as motivated, determined, educated, and confident about the game of basketball. Some players say they want it, but Angel shows it. Every single day.

We were honored to hang out with Angel today. He is truly one of the most intelligent young athletes that we’ve had the chance to speak with and we know his basketball dream of playing both at a 4-year school and professionally will come true if he keeps this same focus. His faith plays a huge part in his success and helps him push for his dreams. If this is the first time you are hearing of Angel Reyes, it for damn sure won’t be the last.

Thank you Angel Reyes!

Travis Reed: Control Your Destiny (Former UCLA, Long Beach State & Pro Hooper)18 Jan 202101:36:53

Send us a text

Sometimes the most impressive and admirable basketball journeys don’t have the fairy tale script of making it to the NBA. How about leaving your dream school that is nationally ranked for a Mid-Major to find your own way? Or moving country to country (4 in two months) to find the right basketball situation then eventually earning the title of a champion? His path in hoops may seem like a bumpy ride but to us it’s the ultimate success story of never giving up, swallowing your pride for happiness, taking control of your destiny and hey… champion is champion right?

Travis Reed was a standout player from the Los Angeles area during an incredible era of hoops. LA was a hotbed producing players like Paul Pierce, Baron Davis, Schea Cotton, Corey Benjamin, the Collins twins, Tobey Bailey, and many more. Reed chose to play for his dream school UCLA. Those UCLA teams included teammates such as Baron Davis, Matt Barnes, Earl Watson, Dan Gadzuric, Toby Bailey, JR Henderson, Jerome Moiso, and other big name players. After two seasons, Reed transferred to Long Beach State to make a name for himself. His success led him to a decorated career overseas that included a few league MVPs and being crowned a champion.

It was a joy having Travis on the show with us. We are blessed that he shared his story because he has had such a unique career and we are thrilled for you all to learn about it. You will really get a better understanding of the what players go through transferring schools and playing ball overseas. Travis also has his own podcast called "Travis Reed-A Basketball Life”. What you hear on this episode is a very small sample size of what you will hear on his podcast so be sure to check it out if you love Travis Reed as much as we do!

Thank you Travis Reed!

You can find his podcast on I-Heart Radio, Spotify, or any main source for Podcasts.

Anthony Prince: Father of Taurean Prince13 Jan 202101:10:01

Send us a text

This summary won’t even begin to explain how powerful this episode is. We have our very first father of a current NBA player on the show today, so this one has a different, deeper kind of feel compared to our usual guests. Anthony Prince joins us today to share his story and it’s an emotional one that will really hit home, especially for all you dads out there.

He is the father of current Brooklyn Nets forward, Taurean Prince. If you know anything about their background then you know it’s a powerful and inspiring story. The struggles that Anthony and Taurean went through together were extremely difficult, including most nights spent sleeping at the Salvation Army. Anthony will be the first to tell you that he doesn’t like the term “homeless” as he was grateful to have that roof over their head. The bond these two have is special and it was both amazing and emotional to hear all about the strength and resilience these two had to make it where they are today. We also got to hear the behind the scenes of what a father of a current NBA player goes through with the business of the NBA, player movement, agents, and even just being fan.

Anthony was incredible and we can’t thank him enough for his time. We loved finding out more about him, his story, and I think all dads out there can learn a thing or two from him. He continues to give back and help with the National Kids Hoops Association, and they are about more than just basketball. It is an amazing way to give back and we encourage all of you to check it out and support them. BIG thanks to Anthony for not only being a guest on our show, but also for teaching us more about life and to help us be both stronger and better fathers.

Thank you Anthony Prince!

They are more than just basketball!

Patrick Ewing Jr: Former Georgetown & NBA Player08 Jan 202101:11:08

Send us a text

Our local listeners will be hyped for this one, remembering his days rocking the rims with the Reno Bighorns. Patrick Ewing Jr.  joins us and takes us back to share his hoops story. We of course know all about his pops, but we absolutely loved learning about the grind, selflessness, and sacrifices Ewing Jr. made for the better of the team. There is no doubt he earned everything he got.

Ranked one of the top players in the country, he chose Indiana to make a name for himself before transferring over to Georgetown University where he earned the very first Big East 6th Man of the Year Award. His sacrifices helped a talented Hoyas team (featuring Roy Hibbert, Jeff Green, Vernon Macklin, and DaJuan Summers) to a Final 4 appearance. He was later selected by the Sacramento Kings with the 43rd overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft and went on to have a successful career in the NBA, D-League, and Overseas before ending up on the sidelines as a coach.

This was a special one for us and we know that our local listeners will second that. We always loved Patrick Ewing Jr. but we have a whole different level of respect for him after hearing his story. We know you will too.

Thank you Patrick Ewing Jr!

Jeff Fryer: Journey of Faith (Former LMU Star)04 Jan 202100:41:53

Send us a text

What better way to start off our list of guests for season 2 than this one?! We got a piece of basketball history and hoops nostalgia in the house today. Jeff Fryer joins us to share his basketball journey and we are blessed to have him.

Loyola Marymount University brought so much excitement to the college hoops scene from 1986-1990. Jeff Fryer was a huge part their success playing alongside Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers in that legendary, fast-paced offense of Paul Westhead where they put up an NCAA record of 122.4 points per game. Fryer could light it up in hurry. In fact, he still holds the NCAA tournament record for most 3-point field goals in a game (11) against the defending champ Michigan Wolverines. He is also the former NCAA All-Time career leader in 3-point field goals made (363). Any basketball junkie remembers his playing days at LMU, but we also got to learn about the draft process, playing overseas, coaching, remembering Hank Gathers, and the important role that his faith has played up to this point.

BIG thanks to Jeff Fryer. We are so honored to have this opportunity to pick his brain, hear his story, and learn more about this college team that had one of the most impressive and emotional tournament runs of all time. Faith can take you far in life and we love to see that it has continued to take Jeff down a path where he can give back.

Thank you Jeff Fryer!

Daniel Artest: "Da Guardian" (Brother of Metta World Peace)17 Dec 202001:15:52

Send us a text

Ron Artest once said that his brother could have easily played in the NBA. His game was unique to say the least. Standing at a generous 6’4’’, the 265 pounder played the Center/Forward spot effectively with his high basketball IQ, explosive vertical leap, and 7’3’ wingspan. He was a self-taught basketball player who has earned the respect from hoopers and recieved the nickname "Da Guardian". We always heard about the stories, so we went ahead and tracked down Daniel Artest to learn from the man himself.

Artest never played a minute of High School basketball, only AAU where he played with former number one player in the nation, Lenny Cooke. He went the Junior College route where he earned an opportunity to play overseas and even cracked an NBA Summer League team with the Sacramento Kings. Daniel could flat out HOOP and there are plenty of stories here about playing at the Rucker tournaments, working out with the Pacers, Malice at the Palace, NBA Summer League, Overseas, all the famous hip hop artists he grew up with, and MUCH more.

We loved our time with Daniel and we can’t thank him enough for all of the knowledge, laughs, and time he shared with us. He also has his own Podcast so be sure to check it out if you love Daniel as much as we did! He is continuing to make a name for himself and we can guarantee that big things lie ahead.

Thank you Daniel Artest!

Grant Napear: If You Don't Like That10 Dec 202001:24:13

Send us a text

Sacramento Kings fans will be very familiar with today’s guest. We got to hang out with the legendary, former voice of the Sacramento Kings, Grant Napear. There Is absolutely no episode quite like this one and we believe it is an important one too.

Napear was born to be behind the microphone. He got his start announcing games for Bowling Green and it was fun hearing all about the journey of how he became one of the most iconic voices and a huge part of the Sacramento Kings family. He talked about the difference between calling Radio & TV, those amazing Kings teams, Marv Albert, Cancel Culture, his Podcast, and MUCH more.

We learned a lot today, shared quite a few laughs, and heard some incredible stories. We also had some very tough but important conversations, which is what we feel isn't happening enough for us to truly come together, educate, and fully understand each other. We are so grateful for our time with Grant Napear and we can’t thank him enough for joining us today.

Thank You Grant Napear!

Michael Conceicao: Basketball Stories from New Bedford02 Dec 202001:15:47

Send us a text

Ever been to New Bedford, MA? Michael Conceicao is in the house today and he truly made us feel the pride, passion, and rich culture that New Bedford has for its hoops. We left this conversation feeling like we actually spent time in the area and lived through some of these experiences. The basketball stories in this episode are unique and any basketball fanatic will appreciate this one.

Michael Conceicao was born and raised in New Bedford MA. He was a three-year starter and two-time team captain at Bishop Stang High School before going on to play at Framingham State where he was third in the nation in assists for DIII during the 1981-82 season and was the Defensive Player of the Year. He officiated basketball for 20+ years and ran the Monte Park Shootout for over 30 years which leads to some incredible stories! Conceicao wrote several great articles including “A Day with Dr. J” that we get to hear about as well.

Michael is truly a basketball historian and we can’t thank him enough for his time. It was a pleasure learning more about him and the love for hoops that New Bedford has. He also shared some great stories about Julius Erving, Nate Archibald, Joe Bryant, David Leitao, Larry Bird, Reggie Lewis, Chris Herren and MUCH more. We learned so much about the game from an officiating standpoint due to his experience as an official and these are simply hoop stories that you won’t hear anywhere else. We promise this won’t be last time that we hear from Michael Conceicao. He is welcome back ANY time!

Thank You Michael Conceicao!

Walt Williams: The Wizard (Maryland Legend & Former NBA Player)27 Nov 202001:21:36

Send us a text

We’ve got another Maryland legend in the house today! The Wizard himself! Walt Williams takes the time to hang out with us and man is it a good one. He’s one of Zach’s childhood favorites growing up and the Wizard did NOT disappoint.

Williams is considered by many to be the reason for resurrecting the school's basketball program which was going through very difficult times after the tragic death of Len Bias. After averaging a sizzling 26.8 points per game his senior year, Williams was selected 7th overall by the Sacramento Kings in the 1992 NBA Draft. He went on to have a successful 11-year NBA Career and we got to hear all about the journey!

We can’t thank The Wizard enough for his time and for the amazing stories he shared. He was so gracious with his time and is one of the most genuine, kind, and fun guests we’ve had the pleasure of hanging out with. He has an awesome book out that he and Tony Massenburg wrote titled “Lessons From Lenny” and we highly recommend that you check it out! Show the Wizard some love!

Thank You Walt Williams!

Renardo Sidney: The Next Chapter (Former Mississippi State Star & Pro)23 Nov 202000:50:54

Send us a text

We have a good one for all of you hoop heads today! We have former McDonalds High School All American and Mississippi State star Renardo Sidney in the house! For those who have had the opportunity to see or play against Renardo Sidney in high school, you know just how damn special he was. If you haven’t heard of Renardo Sidney then you really should tune in. His story in an important one that can help pave the way for some of the young athletes coming up.

Sidney was arguably the most skilled player ever in high school at his position and 6’10 size. He not only had a powerful and smooth inside game, but he could step out and take you off the dribble, make your defense look stupid with his court vision, or simply just step out and hit the 3 with ease. To give you an idea, the dude was the MVP of the ABCD Camp as an EIGHTH GRADER. He was at one point the #1 player in the nation, most notably playing alongside James Harden at Artesia before finishing high school at Fairfax. He played three seasons at Mississippi State before going undrafted in the 2012 NBA Draft. To this day we can’t quite understand why such an incredible talent was never drafted, but Renardo was kind enough to share his story.

We truly had a blast learning more from Renardo and we can’t thank him enough for his time. You will learn quickly that he is one of the most misunderstood and kind guys you would ever meet. He is giving so much back to the game by helping young athletes both on and off the court, and that is something that we respect and admire. Of course he will always be remembered for his amazing ability on the court, but his legacy is truly just getting started and we know that he is going to help change a lot of lives.

Thank you Renardo Sidney!

2020 NBA Mock Draft Challenge16 Nov 202001:41:40

Send us a text

We are fully aware that you could probably care less about our basketball opinions but we can assure you that there is no NBA Mock Draft quite like this one. In fact, it’s legendary. Zach & Craig both have 40 seconds for each pick to make their draft selections and convince Eric that their picks make the most sense along with a player comparison. Craig’s player comparisons alone are worth the listen. There is no way that you don’t laugh your ass off the whole way through this while enjoying some absolute jams, throwback names, and all sorts of ridiculousness. If you hate it, we will retire. That is all.

Also- We wish every player nothing but the best in their careers moving forward.

James Donaldson: Your Gift of Life (Former NBA All-Star)13 Nov 202001:29:19

Send us a text

We have an amazing guest for you all today that goes well beyond basketball. We have former NBA Allstar James Donaldson in the house for an episode that will not only inspire you, but also speaks to those of us who may be going through something in our everyday lives. Donaldson shares his incredible journey in basketball, but also shares some personal life experiences that will truly help remind us of the importance of mental health awareness and the gift of life.

Donaldson’s basketball journey is far different than any guest’s we have had. He didn’t even begin to start playing basketball until his later high school years. He played 4 years at Washington State University where he continued to work hard and develop as basketball player. His work paid off where he saw meaningful minutes once his Junior season hit, and was on the NBA radar by the time he finished his college career. Donaldson was drafted in the 4th round of 1979 NBA Draft by the Seattle Supersonics. He went on to have a long and successful professional career in both the NBA and Overseas, which included an Allstar appearance in 1988 during his amazing run with the Dallas Mavericks.

Our time with Donaldson was truly one of the most memorable experiences we have ever had. The basketball stories are great, but everything that he has done and continues to do for others off the court is even more impressive. The topics we covered after the basketball talk are important ones and we can’t thank him enough for sharing his time with us. We know you will enjoy the stories and laughs, but we also know that we will all gain so much more beyond hoops. It is a reminder of mental health awareness and our value in life.

Thank You James Donaldson!

Ronnie Fields: Bounce Back (Chicago High School Legend & Pro)29 Oct 202001:19:39

Send us a text

Yes, you read the title correctly. We got Chicago High School basketball legend Ronnie Fields on the show today. If you know your history then you should know this guy is a human highlight reel and a damn good basketball player. If you don’t know, then you need to take this opportunity to learn more about his story.

The Farragut Academy show starring Ronnie Fields and Kevin Garnett was the hottest ticket in town along with Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Fields blew the minds of every single packed gym with his amazing body control, 50”+ vertical leap, and rim-rocking dunks. Fields was the #1 ranked freshman in the country in 1992-93 and was a 3-time Parade All American selection. He was the first sophomore to ever play in the "Best of the Best" game at the Nike All American camp in 1993. In his senior year, he led his team to an 11-1 record in the Chicago Public League, averaging 32.4 points, 12.2 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 4.5 blocks, 4 steals, and 4.5 dunks a game. Fields broke his neck in a car accident just one week before the city playoffs which would threaten his basketball future. He left high school as the third all-time leading scorer in Chicago Public League history and fought to bounce back and have a successful professional career in the CBA and Overseas.

Although Fields never got his chance in the NBA, he has earned the respect of the city of Chicago as well current and former pros that have had the honor to play with and against him. His story is inspiring and important especially for our younger listeners. He has given back so much to the game and plays an important role in the development of young athletes. We can’t thank him enough for his time and amazing stories shared about his journey. The best part is that his hoops journey seems to not be done just quite yet.

Thank you Ronnie Fields!
