Comment, question, or idea for the podcast? Send us a Text Message!

This week, Steve and Tanner are joined by guest cohost Rachelle Gordon of Greenstate. Can you guess what we talk about in this episode? If you guessed the DEA's proposal to move cannabis from Schedule I to III, you're correct! If you guessed the bill introduced in Washington to regulate and deschedule cannabis federally, you're correct! If you guessed the CannOmnibus bill passing the Minnesota Senate, you're correct! And if you guessed the hosts discuss the measure making its way through the Minnesota Legislature to restrict packing (can you read six-point font?), then you're also correct! It's a busy week, and we top it off by trying Legacy Cup-winning Flo from The Stash, a watermelon strawberry beverage concoction.

Then, Steve sits down with Drew Emmer, Strategic Relations at Boveda. They explore the history of the Minnesota-based company that innovated a product known across the country helping to Save The Terps. Drew recounts the connection between a cigar company and the legacy cannabis industry that reformed products today.

Finally, it's time for another segment of Cooking with Clem, a collaboration between Doctor Dabs and Northern Lights Podcast. Today Clem's whipping up some Cajun Shrimp flavored with Infused Cajun Seasoning! 4/20 is less than a week away, and the Department of Health is celebrating by destroying half a million dollars worth of illicit cannabis products. Marcus, Steve, and Tanner break that down, and a whole lot more happening throughout the state, including St. Joseph passing a moratorium while exploring municipal shops, roadside testers reporting a high participation rate, and more fun at the Legislature in St. Paul as the CannOmnibus bill makes it way through the law-making meat grinder. While that is happening on the state level, there is also a grassroots nonprofit informing the community about the rollout of all aspects of legalization. Minnesota Cannabis College Founder Tanner Berris joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to talk about it.

Social Equity Verification Workshop (MN Office of Cannabis Management June 21 Event Recording)24 Jun 202401:38:14

Comment, question, or idea for the podcast? Send us a Text Message!

Welcome to the MNCC recording of the Minnesota Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) training session on completing the social equity verification process. This is the crucial first step for potential social equity applicants aiming to participate in Minnesota’s new cannabis industry, launching this summer.

This training was held from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, June 21, at the Sabathani Community Center Auditorium in Minneapolis. Preregistration was strongly encouraged, and attendees signed up using a designated registration form.

This workshop underscores the state’s dedication to fostering a fair and inclusive cannabis industry. Recent updates to Minnesota’s cannabis law have introduced a licensing preapproval and vetted lottery process for qualified social equity applicants.

For those unable to attend the event, this recording will provide a detailed, step-by-step guide through the verification process. Charlene Briner, OCM interim director, has emphasized that additional information and technical assistance resources are forthcoming.

“The Office of Cannabis Management is committed to providing ongoing information and assistance as we prepare to open the application and licensing process,” said Briner. “We encourage potential applicants to check our website frequently as we continue to add guides and materials to support applicants every step of the way.”

As part of this summer’s launch, applicants must complete the verification process to ensure they qualify for social equity status. This process runs from June 24 to July 10.

Verified social equity applicants will then be eligible to submit an application for license preapproval from July 24 to August 12, as mandated by law. These applications will undergo a review and vetting process, and qualified candidates will enter a lottery planned for this fall.

Applicants will complete both the verification and preapproval processes through the OCM website.

For more information and to review social equity eligibility requirements, please visit the OCM website.

It’s been a pretty boring couple of weeks in cannabis in Minnesota. Oh, except for the Legacy Cup that hosted 12,000+ attendees, the number of registered cannabis businesses has skyrocketed, Elk River is allowing cannabis medicine to be administered at school by parents, and the state has begun investigating the previous selection for the Office of Cannabis Management. Then we’re joined by Phillip Owens of Nomatry to talk about what led him to starting his business and what advice he would have for other BIPOC individuals wanting to enter the industry.

Today we’re sharing an interview that we did with the previously named director of the Office of Cannabis Management, Erin DuPree. Erin’s been the talk of a lot of news surrounding the cannabis industry here in Minnesota, and we wanted to give her an opportunity to share her side of the story.

During this conversation, Erin shared her experiences around that appointment, but also about what it was like navigating cannabis regulation as a small business owner. Erin also shares her advice for the next person to be named to that role. We cover a lot of ground and hear a bit more about what it was like to be on the inside of the selection process, so be sure to give this a listen!!
