We are so excited to have John Craigie join us this week on No Simple Road as part of our lead-up to Cascade Equinox Festival!
John Craigie takes center stage in an unforgettable episode where he shares his musical journey and the intricacies of the Portland music scene. From his serendipitous move to Portland and his unexpected connections with Frasco and TK and the Holy Know Nothings, to the creative magic behind his latest album, John's stories are as entertaining as they are insightful. We explore his unique blend of humor and music, revealing how his early aspirations of comedy continue to influence his art today.
The episode also explores the evolution of the music industry, from the days when independent artists lacked digital tools to the current era of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify. John discusses the democratization of music discovery and the impact of social media on promoting music. We also delve into John's experiences navigating major stage performances and his serendipitous connection with Jack Johnson, which led to unforgettable performances at iconic venues such as The Gorge. Additionally, the episode touches on the supportive and non-competitive nature of Portland's music community and the magic of collaborations within the scene.

| Russell Long of The Great North Special - Callithump Heartbeat | 02 Aug 2024 | 01:33:07 | |
What energizes a band and keeps their creative flame alive amidst the challenges of the music industry? Join us for a heart-to-heart conversation with Russell Long of The Great North Special as he takes us through the band's recent journey, from the release of their album "Callithump Parade" to their transformative experiences navigating life as a band.
Russell's insights into how the band collaborates to develop a unique visual identity are truly inspiring, and you'll feel the camaraderie and connection that make these artistic endeavors possible. Russell opens up about the trials and triumphs of sustaining motivation and creative persistence.
Drawing on Rick Rubin's philosophy of creating art for oneself, we explore the emotional rollercoaster of seeking validation and the importance of community support in pushing through tough times. The discussion also sheds light on the often-overlooked administrative tasks involved in producing a record and the heartfelt gratitude that comes from being acknowledged in an album's liner notes. The essence of building a local community and fostering genuine relationships within the music scene is powerfully highlighted, showing how these bonds fuel artistic growth.
We also reflect on the transformation of underground culture, the balance between digital and real-life experiences, and the impact of technology on our consciousness. Listen in as we celebrate the joy of live music, share recent concert experiences, and highlight the importance of genuine human connections!

| Christian Lopez - Finding Magdalena | 29 Sep 2023 | 01:09:39 | |
We are very excited to have singer/songwriter Christian Lopez in the studio as our guest on No Simple Road this week!
Rolling Stone says.. "as popularity in Americana rises, Lopez can connect the dots for many young listeners..”
Christian Lopez is not merely riding the wave of Americana Music, the West Virginia native is bending it to its knees. With the will of his voice and the stomp of a steady beat, Christian Lopez is pioneering his own brand of Folk Rock.
Hailed as an Americana wunderkind when he burst onto the scene in 2015, Lopez recorded his debut album, produced by multi-Grammy winning producer, Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton) when he was just 18. Followed up by his critically acclaimed sophomore album, “Red Arrow” in 2017, featuring guests like Vince Gill and Kenneth Pattengale (Milk Carton Kids).
Since then, Lopez has released 2 albums including “The Other Side” (2021) his latest release “Magdalena” (June 2023) which he wrote and recorded while living in the tiny town of Magdalena, New Mexico.
We chat with Christian about:
Playing music from the age of 5.
How a visiting Dude Ranch as a kid gave him the bug to become a musician.
What was it inside of him that made him give up a full college scholarship in pursuit of a dream.
Ways he connects back to friends and family back home after being on the road for extended periods of time.
The process of using angst as a creative tool in songwriting.
Dropping barriers inside oneself to find your own unique voice.
His experiences in working with major labels as a young man.
Pushing through doubts from those around you.
Finding the place of being unapologetically yourself.
... and so much more!
For tour info, music, merch, and more head over to: www.christianlopezmusic.com and check out the new album 'Magdalena' everywhere you stream your tunes!

Passion for music and its innate ability to heal, Lisa Joy has made it her mission to heal the healers, to teach musicians how to prevent the myriad of common injuries and issues associated with the repetition, asymmetry, and conditions of playing instruments and living on the road. | Andy Thorn of Leftover Salmon - Watching The Sunrise | 22 Sep 2023 | 01:33:05 | |
We are super excited this week to have Leftover Salmon banjoy player Andy Thorn as our guest on No Simple Road.
Andy never expected to go viral. But in 2021, he was in his backyard, playing an improvised banjo tune to a wild fox, when his wife caught the whole thing on video. The video made headlines around the world. Soon, Andy was interviewed on the Kelly Clarkson Show and A & E’s Neighborhood Wars. Even NPR’s Political Gabfest discussed the video. A New York Times writer called it “a moment plucked from Aesop.”
We talk with Andy about:
Why he picked up the banjo at age 13.
How spending his time wisely during lockdown created so many beautiful things.
The ways he's seen the Bluegrass scene grow and change over the years.
Does Andy think that Bluegrass can sustain shows in stadiums?
How Mayor McCheese started touring with Leftover Salmon.
His perspective on playing with a band he used to go see.
What it was like for him to play music in France.
How he and' Foxy' became friends.
His experience playing Salmon Fest.
... and a whole lot more!
Check out Andy's solo album 'Songs Of The Sunrise Fox' streaming everywhere and for Leftover Salmon tour info, merch, and more head over to www.leftoversalmon.com

| Jake Eddy - Picking The Grass | 08 Sep 2023 | 01:41:06 | |
This week on No Simple Road we are so excited to have the one and only Jake Eddy as our guest on the show!
Jake Eddy is a bluegrass guitarist born and raised in Parkersburg, West Virginia. He began his musical career and lifelong addiction to the road playing banjo professionally at the age of fourteen with bluegrass-legend Melvin Goins. His guitar playing, which is primarily influenced by bluegrass and jazz, is showcased on his debut album of fiddle tunes entitled "Jake Eddy", which features such greats as Grammy-Award winning Bryan Sutton, Rob Ickes, and Kenny Smith. He tours as a sideman with the Becky Buller Band from Manchester, TN as well as his own group. His current touring group features his brother, Carter on upright bass and NC-native Graham Brewer on Mandolin.
We talk with Jake about:
Why a garden keeps him grounded at home.
Using the skill of playing fast to draw folks into his musical world.
How bluegrass became part of his DNA.
Some solid advice for new players.
What it was like to hit the road at fourteen along side musical giants.
If he feels like he missed out on actually being 'a kid'.
Playing music with synesthesia.
How and why he started the 'homestay' program for his students.
The story of acquiring his 1943 Martin D28.
... and a whole lot more!

| Haley Johnsen - Into The Light Of Ourselves | 01 Sep 2023 | 01:49:13 | |
We are so stoked to have Haley Johnsen in the studio with us this week for No Simple Road! Haley is a Portland, Oregon-born musician with a knack for genre bending and hard-earned career path that is uniquely her own.
Raised listening to powerhouse singers such as Brandi Carlile, Grace Potter, and Annie Lennox, her greatest inspirations become apparent in her stunning vocals, introspective lyricism, and cross-pollinated style of indie-pop, and Americana music.
Haley has the type of showmanship that is electric, earnest, and whole heartedly endearing. With or without a band, you can be sure to leave her shows with a smile on your face while whiping tears from your eyes.

This week on the No Simple Road Weekly Rewind we have a conversation surrounding feeling a sense of accomplishment, relaxing into a future you can be proud of, and letting go of misconceptions about ourselves. There's a sense of calm that comes when we relax into ourselves and then we begin to see that thing reflected back at us through our experience of being alive.
We also talk a little about the recent Flaming Lips show here in Portland and what it was like to see such an iconic band for the very first time and what that experience was like!

Why he's choosing to head back to The Playa for Burning Man.
Why Burning Man's 10 Principals are so important and his thoughts on each one individually.
His thoughts on why the clinical aspect and decriminalization of psychedelics is so important.
Why Jam Cruise is so transformational.
Why moved him and Alli to create a giant Crab Car.
How intent can transmute a situation.
The current goings on with Psychedelics Today.
Some reasons why decriminalization isn't the scourge it has been portrayed to be in the media.
... and a whole lot more!

We are back at it with The Rewind this week after being away last week because we were sick! We jump into a pretty heavy conversation surrounding the obstacles each of us faces in being wholly, totally, and completely ourselves. What are the triggers and things we have hiding in the dark corners of our minds that hang us up and stop us from shining our own unique light 100% for all the world to see? What can we do to try and move past that old programming?

| Cory Walker & Harry Clark of East Nash Grass - Growing The Grass | 18 Aug 2023 | 01:36:03 | |
We are super stoked to have Cory Walker and Harry Clark of East Nash Grass joining us as our guests on No Simple Road this week! The band that would become East Nash Grass began to take shape by chance, as a weekly bluegrass night at Dee's Country Cocktail Lounge. The gig leadership changed hands and players came and went over several years, and what started as a loose collection of pickers gradually solidified into a committed group of dedicated bandmates. They quickly became one of the top young bands in bluegrass music, whose members have been highly sought-after as side musicians for the genre's top stars and hottest bands. Today, whether it's Bluegrass Monday at Dee's, or the hallowed stage of The Ryman Auditorium, East Nash Grass brings swagger, staggering abilities, and high energy to every performance.
We talk with Cory and Harry about:
Why Cory hates Brunch and anything that has to do with it.
The superhero origin story of the band.
The effects Billy Strings has had on the genre of bluegrass and how that has helped all pickers.
The magical element of playing with other phenomenal players that changes the 'air' in a room.
The way the connections inside the band have grown and strengthened over the years.
Creating the new album Last Chance To Win.
What advice the two of them would give their younger selves now.
... and a whole lot more!
Check out the new album Last Chance To Win out now and streaming everywhere you get your music!!

This week on The Rewind we talk a little bit about how an attitude of gratitude is the elixir for a blue mood. Our mental spaces sometimes get funky and we talk this week about how we can shift our perspective from the negative to the positive.
As always, if you are struggling, reach out to us, to a loved one, or to one of your friends. None of us should ever go through the tough times alone and talking about our struggle is the first step to feeling right as rain!

| Torrin Daniels of Kitchen Dwellers - A Place In The Pines | 28 Jul 2023 | 01:54:52 | |
This week on No Simple Road we are super stoked to have Torrin Daniels of Kitchen Dwellers joining us here in the studio!
Among the many natural wonders in Montana, Wise River runs for about 30 miles through the Southwestern region of the state, cutting through the mountains and flowing into the Big Hole River. Beyond being a favorite spot for fly fishermen, it remains etched into the topography of the land itself. Two hours away in Bozeman, Kitchen Dwellers equally embody the spirit and soul of their home with a sonic palette as expansive as Montana’s vistas. The quartet—Shawn Swain [Mandolin], Torrin Daniels [banjo], Joe Funk [upright bass], and Max Davies [acoustic guitar]—twist bluegrass, folk, and rock through a kaleidoscope of homegrown stories, rich mythology, American west wanderlust, and psychedelic hues. After amassing 5 million-plus streams, selling out shows, and receiving acclaim from Huffington Post, Relix, American Songwriter, and more, the group brings audiences back to Big Sky Country on their third full-length album, Wise River, working with Cory Wong of Vulfpeck as producer, and make sure to check out the new release Kitchen Dwellers - Live At Pine Creek Vol. 2 streaming everywhere you get your music!
We talk with Torrin about:
Playing shows in our home town of Vegas.
Taking the opportunity to buckle down during lockdown and creating something amazing.
Torrin's 'why' for playing music.
Dealing with mental heath struggles and reaching out for help.
The uniqueness of finding longevity with his bandmates and in music.
The influence of Jeff Austin and Yonder Mountain String Band.
How The Dwellers came to find Pine Creek Lodge and the magic there.
A few simple things that can help him when he's on the road.
... and much, much more!

| Trevor Hall - Navigating The In Between | 21 Jul 2023 | 01:48:13 | |
This week on No Simple Road we are super excited to have Trevor Hall as our guest! Raised on an island in South Carolina, singer/songwriter Trevor Hall realized at a young age that music was more than just a passion - it was his life’s art. At sixteen, he recorded his first album. Shortly after, Hall left South Carolina for Idyllwild Arts Academy in California where he studied classical guitar and was introduced to the practices of yoga and meditation, which would greatly influence his life and his music.
Hall’s music, a blend of roots and folk music with touches of electronic elements, is imbued with a deep love of Eastern Mysticism. This powerful symbiosis fostered a deep connectivity with his growing fan base and Trevor quickly matured into a leader of the burgeoning conscious musical community. Along with numerous pilgrimages to India, he has sold out the historic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado as a headliner and he also completed a series of sold-out international tours with artists such as Ziggy Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Michael Franti, John Butler Trio, Matisyahu and Brett Dennen.
We talk with Trevor about:
How being an introvert at heart translates to being a musician.
His experiences of getting signed to a major label at the age of 16 and how it affected him.
How being treated like a 'product' took its toll on his mental state and self confidence.
What the genesis of his spiritual journey looked like.
Some of his experiences in traveling to India and practicing Yoga.
How "the Great In Between' and the new album came to be.
The ways in which becoming a Father have fundamentally changed him for the better.
... and much, much more!

For the past 15 years, Luke has been studying and teaching a broad range of body, breath, and mind practices. A low-back injury in 2012 led him to an in-depth study of breathwork and committing to an ongoing zazen training. Each of these modalities produced profound healing and accelerated heart opening in his life.
We came to know Luke through the synchronicities that abound at Phish which culminated in him becoming our very own Conductor's meditation and breathwork teacher for the past couple of months.
We talk with Luke this week about:
The synchronicities involved in our meeting at various Phish shows.
Getting over the hangups and hesitations surrounding sitting with a teacher.
His perspectives on living in and recognizing 'Deep Heart Mind' awareness.
Why we want to work 'through' our ego rather than fight against it.
His experience of leaving the Phish community and then returning years later.
The origin of 'Our Breath Collective'.
Tackling discomfort head-on.
A few of those amazing stories from recent Phish shows!
... and much, much more!
To find out more on 'Our Breath Collective' head over to www.ourbreathcollective.com

This week on The Rewind we talk a bit about what it means to be a 'Grandparent' and share some stories from the recent visit of the coolest kid on the planet, Jasper. Then, we get into a a discussion surrounding why it is we go through the planning, expense, and time consuming activity of attending music festivals. What is it that makes this thing a priority for us? Why is it so vital to our mental health?
And finally, (59:000:00) we share our most recent LIVE PODCAST from 'Mojo Family Fest' on June 17th, 2023. We shared our hearts and our thoughts as Rhythms Ground set sail on her inaugural journey of becoming the Pacific Northwest's most unique and magickal boutique festival grounds and talked a bit with the property's owners/stewards, The Raverts. We finish up with a land dedication ritual in which we infused the land itself with the rhythms of our bodies, minds, and hearts!

| SEGO - Living The Dream | 23 Jun 2023 | 01:43:19 | |
We are super excited to have our friends SEGO as our guests on No Simple Road this week! SEGO is a band that defies definition and genre. Elements of punk-rock, hip-hop, electronic synth driven hooks, and psychedelic lyrics all come together to form what can simply be called SEGO! Hailing from Los Angeles by way of Provost, Utah the band is made up of Spencer Peterson (guitar/vocals), Thomas Carroll (drums), Alyssa "Derv" Davey (bass), and multi-instrumentalist Kathleen Frewin.
We got the whole band on to talk about:
The music scene in Provo, Utah & people's misconceptions of it.
The good, bad, and ugly of touring the country.
Derv's love of Milwaukee.
Some of the band's proudest accomplishments of the last few years.
How they navigate the weird world of DIY recording, producing, and publishing.
Their own particular process of creation.
How gratitude comes into play.
Working together to create a coherent vibe.
How Derv & Kathleen actually saved the band from certain doom.
... and a whole lot more!

This week on No Simple Road we are so stoked to have Young & Sick (Nick van Hofwegen) as our guest on the show! Young & Sick is a New York and LA based musician and artist who's art has graced the covers of bands like Foster The People and artists like LP Giobbi. His unique visual style and prolific output are legendary. Nick is also a die hard Deadhead and we couldn't wait to dig into all of it with him!
We talk with Nick about:
His experience of finding the Grateful Dead community both overseas and here in the States.
His first memories of psychedelia and his lifelong attraction to the strange and oddball.
How he got his start in the art world by creating art for bands he loved and then giving it away to them for free.
Finding success along side Foster The People.
His unique path for creating and what his process looks like.
How he feels his style has evolved and how he looks back on the beginnings.
The ways in which the Grateful Dead community has shown him the reality of giving back 10 fold.

Then, we recap this year's trip to the Oregon Country Fair. This year's trip to Fair didn't disappoint where excitement and interconnection are concerned. To say that it was eventful is a major understatment! You'll just have to listen to hear the full gist of what actually went down.

| Ari Joshua - Orbiting The Black Hole | 02 Jun 2023 | 01:47:39 | |
We are so excited to have Ari Joshua as our guest on No Simple Road This week! For years, shamanistic guitarist and composer Ari Joshua has been one of those “musician’s musicians” who those “in the know” rave about but remains under the radar to the public. Struggles with substance abuse; a severe car accident; Ari’s commitment to music education with the successful school he founded, The Music Factory; and the daunting task of mixing have kept him in something of a creative holding pattern.
Ari is finally opening his vault and sharing a catalog of recordings that feature his masterful musicianship alongside such revered instrumentalists as four-time Grammy-winning artist Robert Glasper, Marco Benevento, Joe Russo, Delvon Lamarr, Skerik, and members of the Trey Anastasio Band. These tracks will be issued in various configurations, and they document a spiritual journey of a prodigious talent all-consumed by his passion for music.
We talk with Ari about:
Growing up on the east coast and receiving a scholarship to music school.
His struggles and triumphs in running his own music school, The Music Factory.
Having Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam as a mentor.
Buying the building for The Music Factory with the help of local investors.
His early connection to frequency and sound.
Overcoming his fear of sharing his art.
What it means to find our own personal 'Black Hole' and what we do with it when we find it.
Having the guts to just 'go for it' when you feel something move you.
How the Grunge Era and the Seattle music scene shaped his life and sound.
Finding focus when you have a ton of things on your plate.
Ways to serve your own creative abilities.
... and so much more!

Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between!
This week on The Rewind we talk about the most wonderful time of the year... Festival Season! We spend a lot of time planning for, going to, thinking about, and attending festivals. What is so special about them that keeps us going back time and again? Is it the community, is it the music, is it the magic that is created when community forms around music? Is it a little of column A and a little of column B? We answer these questions and talk a little bit about the upcoming Mojo Family Fest here in the PNW at the newly minted Rhythm's Grounds and give you a little backstory on some of the bands that are going to be there with us this year!

| Marcel Ardans of Lessons With Marcel - The Biggest Baddest Billy Goat In The Barn | 26 May 2023 | 01:46:17 | |
We are so stoked to have Marcel Ardans of the Lessons With Marcel YouTube channel as our guest on No Simple Road this week!
Marcel Ardans is a guitarist, teacher and YouTuber active in the Raleigh music scene. His time in the bluegrass scene began in the Pacific Northwest, where he wood-shedded and gigged extensively with local and regional acts. Rightfully earning the nickname “The Biggest Baddest Billy Goat In The Barnyard”. In 2015, he started the online business Lessons With Marcel. The goal was to bring flatpicking and bluegrass guitar to those who wanted instruction but lacked local resources, essentially trying to make bluegrass more accessible, to grow the community.
We chop it up with Marcel about:
His experience of living with hearing loss as a musician and trying to get into music school.
His deep love and obsession with Bluegrass music and why it's a Normal Rockwell painting.
His reasons for wanting to play music and teach music later on in life.
Why he decided to bring the history lessons back to the YouTube channel.
His take on both traditional and the new grass styles.
How learning the roots of a thing only deepens your experience with it.
His new podcast "Podcast With Marcel' and how that came to be.
How he has dealt with a growing community.
... and much, much more!

Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between!
This week on The Rewind we talk about burning the candle at both ends. What are some of the ways we care for ourselves when we realize that we are exhausted and there is no end in sight. Do we exercise more, meditate, try and eat healthier, spend time zoning out on a good movie, or is it some unknown thing we just haven't figured out just yet? Is it a mixture of all or some of these things? Is it personal and different for all of us? Give this episode a listen and find out!

| Will Hanza Of Escaper - Boarding The Spaceship | 19 May 2023 | 01:35:18 | |
We are so stoked to have our brother Will Hanza of Escaper back on No Simple Road this week!
Escaper was formed in 2015 by Will Hanza (guitar, vocals) as a musical collective that pushed creative freedom. Joined in 2017 by Phil Kadet (keys, vocal), the band has become known for fun and fiery sets throughout northeast venues and music festivals. The band has welcomed sit-ins with members of bands such as the Disco Biscuits, Brazilian Girls, Thievery Corporation, Rubblebucket, Dopapod, Cabinet, Turkuaz and more. They have previously shared bills at Brooklyn Bowl with Jon Fishman (Phish), Karl Denson, and many other top performers.
After a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, they have been joined by drummer Sam Crespo and bassist Luke Bemand. Crespo and Bemand bring a wealth of experience to the band; Crespo tours with notable future jam act Space Bacon, while Bemand handles the low end for heavy groove trio, lespecial.
The band recently released the EP, "Spaceship", which was a collaboration with Telefunken Studios. "Spaceship" is now all streaming and download platforms.
We had a blast talking with Will about:
playing Phish afterparties and what those crowds bring to the table.
If reading a crowd and feeling their vibe is a learned skill or are you just born with it.
What creating the new album 'Spaceship' was like.
His thoughts on practice and if it is simply building memory in order to be able to let go.
Overcoming your own headspace in order to be able to perform.
How the "No Shorts On Stage" rule works.
What gems he found during isolation.
... and so much more!

| Artist Spotlight - The Jauntee | 17 May 2023 | 01:34:40 | |
We are back with another Artist Spotlight this week with Caton Sollenberger & Scott Ferber of The Jauntee!
In a world filled with instant gratification, gimmicky over saturation and a lack of true improvisation, The Jauntee pays tribute to music’s ability to transcend simple entertainment and cultivate a truly distinctive experience. The Jauntee has fostered a musical community based on a breadth of original material that engages fans through nightly exploration and risk taking. Averaging over one hundred shows a year, with each containing a unique set list and their own special improvisational moments, the band is constantly expanding upon what defines them and their live performances.
We talk with Scott and Caton about:
Coming from the humble beginnings of playing the bar scene to taking the stage at major festivals and bigger and bigger rooms.
What atmosphere they are creating at a Jauntee show for their audience.
How they have honed the skill of navigating the unknown.
What it is that drives them to explore jams that last upwards of 30 minutes or more and what it is that they find inside of those outer spaces.
the way the sound in a particular room can make or break a show for them.
How the decision to not all live together anymore affected them and the music.
The ways they have been forced to focus on the positive even when exhaustion sets in.
The reason that finding bandmates that you love is like hitting the lottery.
How creating the new album has been a new experience for them in the studio.
... and much, much more!!!!

| No Simple Road's Weekly Rewind - Vol. 30 | 15 May 2023 | 01:19:06 | |
Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between!
This week on The Rewind we spend some time talking about Moms, psychedelics, taking psychedelics with your Mom, and what it is we think a psychedelic is actually 'doing' when we take it. This one is a twisted road of conversation that finally has all of us arrive at the destination together.
We start this week with Mel talking all about the healing journey she's been on lately with her Mom and how she's witnessed some pretty remarkable transformation in her over the last week-and-a-half. Then, the question is posed, "what do you think a psychedelic is doing when you ingest it?" Each of us gives our thoughts and the different perspectives seem to merge into an actual coherent idea.

| Erik Davis - Into The Blotterverse | 19 Jul 2024 | 01:34:02 | |
Erik Davis, an American writer, scholar, journalist and public speaker whose writings have ranged from rock criticism to cultural analysis to creative explorations of esoteric mysticism, takes us on an unforgettable exploration into the world of LSD blotter art with his latest book, "Blotter: The Untold Story of an Acid Medium".
We discuss the fascinating history of this unique street medium and discover the art's profound cultural significance, spurred by Davis's personal connection with Mark McLeod, the largest collector of blotter art. Erik's multidisciplinary approach shines through as he navigates the labyrinthine process of documenting countercultural history, blending personal accounts and obscure artifacts to craft a compelling narrative.
He shares with us the fascinating process of documenting countercultural history through the kaleidoscopic lens of LSD distribution and blotter art. Erik explains the challenge of piecing together stories from a variety of sources, blending personal anecdotes with historical records to create a rich tapestry that blurs myth and fact.
We delve into the evolution of LSD formats, the complex influence of the Grateful Dead on the acid scene, and the potential involvement of intelligence agencies like the CIA. Erik reflects on his personal experiences with psychedelics and how they shaped his career, offering a unique perspective on the modern, lab-created drug compared to organic psychedelics.
Tune in for a rich and insightful conversation that navigates the multifaceted landscape of psychedelic culture.

| Andy Frasco - Back On The Couch | 12 May 2023 | 01:47:01 | |
We're super stoked to have the one and only Andy Frasco back on No Simple Road as our guest this week! If you don't already know who Andy Frasco is you probably have been living under a rock. He's been constantly touring with his band Andy Frasco & The U.N. and performing at all the major festivals, well known venues, and bringing his own brand of chaotic fun to folks all over the world! There's no show like a Andy Frasco & The U.N. show, that's for sure.
Andy's back in the studio this week with the NSR crew for another therapy session. We've become Andy's Portland therapists and we dig right into it talking about:
How he hates birthday attention.
Why he feels that it's time to actually start taking care of himself.
The reasons it's not smart to do Ketamine in public.
How he has the ability to say no (believe it or not).
How his mental demons materialize.
His most recent experience with heartbreak.
Why we think he needs an emotional support mini Doberman.
How he's seen different ways of living traveling the world.
IIf there's a point when he thinks he's made it.
What his 'rock bottom' looked like.
... and so much more!

| Jake Brownstein of Eggy - Right From The Start | 05 May 2023 | 01:34:07 | |
We are extremely excited to have Jake Brownstein of Eggy as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Song by timeless song Eggy reaches out a hand, inviting you along as a great story unfolds. Eggy’s music traces the full spectrum of emotions evoked by a life well-lived alongside friends well-loved.
Jake joined us here in the NSR studio on their stop here in Portland to hang out with us a little bit and have an extremely heartfelt conversation about:
The ways in which our musical community responds from town to town and state to state across the country.
What it was about playing music that drove Jake from an early age to want to do it for a living.
If playing is more of an emotional outlet for him or a place to find his own unique voice.
Why he decided to learn to play pedal steel guitar, the musical equivalent of flying a spaceship.
The way in which his own unique style of learning has benefited him in life.
How he keeps his mental space on point with so much happening so fast and with so much going on.
The importance of having solid friendships, family, and partner support while sacrificing for a dream.
Eggy's plans of recording their new album with James Petralli of White Denim.
... and much, much more!
