"Mubeena Ke Sakeena" (Mubeena or Sakeena) is the story of a child separated and then united with her parents through a kind woman. The two names of the child are a reflection of the lifelong bond between both women- the biological and the foster mother.

Gurbaksh Singh Preet Lari (1895-1977) is a unique signature of Punjabi literature. He was a novelist, short story writer, prose writer and a dreamer. He was an engineering graduate from what is now known as IIT Roorkee, and a civil engineering graduate from Uni of Michigan, Ann Arbor. An idealist, he established Preet Nagar township which was equidistant from Amritsar and Lahore, and where he invited prominent writers and artists like Balraj Sahni, Nanak Singh, Sobha Singh, Faiz, Sahir, Ashq, Gargi, and Duggal to come and live and write. Preet Nagar township had a community kitchen, an activity based school, a park, and spaces for physical, artistic, political, economic activities. Preet Nagar suffered the vagaries of the winds of 1947 when most of its inhabitants migrated to Delhi and other cities. His own family returned to live there with a few other families. In 1933, he founded a journal called Preet, Lari which though struggling, is still being published. The title of this journal gave him the suffix of Preet Lari. A postgraduate in Punjabi literature and PhD scholar from Delhi University, Rupana began his career as a schoolteacher in Delhi, forging close literary ties with luminaries like Amrita Pritam. His acclaimed collection Aam Khaas (“Ordinary Extraordinary”)—featuring tales of Dalits, migrant laborers, and slum dwellers—earned him the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2020 and recognition as a Dhahan Prize finalist in 2019.

He has recently won the Sahitya Akademi Award for children's literature (2023). Before this he has been honoured with the Languages Department Punjab award in addition to many other awards he has won.

"Nooan" (Salt) is the story of leather worker Sudagar and his family. Poverty, and deprivation are his lot. He and his family raise a weakling buffalo calf and it changes the family's lot to some extent until it dies after growing old. The story is among the best works by Punjabi author Balijit. His short story collection "Uchian Awazan" was the finalist for 2023 Dhahan Award.

Balijit wrote his first story while studying in college. His professor, Bhushan Dhianpuri, encouraged students to submit their stories for a writing contest. Balijit’s story won the contest, which then launched his literary journey. Today, he is a respected author, having produced three collections of short stories – ‘Soan Gallan’ (2006), ‘Ebartana’ (2010) and Uchian Awazan (2022). A Hindi translation of ‘Ebartana’ was published in 2019. He is the recipient of the Lok Kavi Gurdas Ram Alam award. In 2022 the ‘Nooan’ or ‘Looan’ story was conferred the Urmila Anand Simrati Book award. (details from Dhahan Award website).

About the Author:

Dr. Sohinder Singh Wanjara Bedi (1924–2001) whose folk tale collection - Bata'n Mudh Kadeem Dian has this folk tale, was one of the most respected voices in Punjabi literature, especially known for his unmatched work in preserving and popularizing Punjabi folk tales. Born in the village Dhamial in Sialkot district (now in Pakistan), he migrated to India during Partition and dedicated his life to literature and education.

Dr. Bedi began collecting folk stories at a young age, and over the decades, he published more than 80 books, including children’s tales, short stories, literary criticism, and folklore studies. His most iconic contribution is the eight-volume “Punjabi Lokdhara Vishav Kosh”, a global encyclopedia of Punjabi folklore that took him over 45 years to compile — a rare and monumental feat.

He served as a professor at Dayal Singh College, Delhi, and was deeply committed to using literature to preserve Punjabi cultural heritage. In 1988, he received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his short story collection "Galīeṅ Chikkar Dūrī Ghar".

Dr. Bedi believed in the power of simple storytelling to teach deep values. He passed away in 2001, but his work continues to inspire generations of readers, writers, and educators.

"Sau Meel Daud" (100-Mile Marathon) is a chronicle of the rise and fall of the dream fed to a young man who has extra-ordinary physical endurance and can actually run a 100 mile marathon.About the author:Balwant Gargi (December 4, 1916 – April 22, 2003) was a pioneering Punjabi playwright, novelist, and theatre director who played a central role in modernizing Punjabi drama. Born in Sehna, Barnala district (Punjab), he completed his M.A. in English Literature from Forman Christian College, Lahore. He was mentored by Norah Richards and later studied theatre at Yale and Columbia. His most acclaimed plays include 'Loha Kutt' (1944), 'Kanak di Balli' (1968), 'Sultan Razia', and 'Dhooni di Agg (1977). Gargi’s autobiographical English novel, 'The Naked Triangle', explores themes of identity and sexuality. He founded the Department of Indian Theatre at Panjab University in 1962, shaping the careers of many renowned actors. His book 'Rang Manch' (1962) earned him the Sahitya Akademi Award, and he was honored with the Padma Shri in 1972 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1998. Gargi passed away in Mumbai, leaving a legacy that deeply influenced Indian theatre.

Many Moons - is a children's picture book written by James Thurber and illustrated by Louis Slobodkin. It was published by Harcourt, Brace & Company in 1943 and won the Caldecott Medal in 1944.

Princess Lenore suffers from "a surfeit of raspberry tarts" — eating too many sweets. She insists she is gravely ill, but if her father brings her the moon she'll be well again.Her father, the king, asks the wisest men in his court how he can give his daughter the moon, and becomes outraged when they all claim that it is too large, too far away, and composed of unstable or dangerous substances.Despairing, the king confides in his court jester. The jester then asks the princess what she thinks the moon is made of, how big it is, and how far away. According to the princess, the moon is as big as her thumbnail and made of gold. She says it's so close that he could climb a tree and pluck it from the sky. He promises to do just that, that very night.Instead, the jester takes the princess's specifications to the royal goldsmith, who creates a necklace with a moon-like pendant. It is presented to the princess and she becomes well again.The next day, the King fears she'll see the moon in the sky and realize that the necklace is a forgery. He consults the wisest men in his court, who propose outrageous schemes to prevent her from seeing it in the sky.Ultimately, the jester visits the princess, who is fondly gazing at the newly-risen moon. He asks her how the moon can be in two places, and she tells him the moon always grows back: like a child's tooth, a unicorn's horn, or flowers.AdaptationsIt was made into an opera by American composer, Celius Dougherty. It was also made into a play, adapted by Charlotte Chorpenning. In 1966, an animated adaptation was produced by Gene Deitch as part of the animated film Alice of Wonderland in Paris. In 1972 an audio version was released by Caedmon Records, read by Peter Ustinov with music by Edgar Summerlin.

This story commences with Sirajuddin, an elderly father, regaining his consciousness in a refugee camp in Lahore. As he comes to consciousness, he realizes that his daughter, Sakina, is not with him. He searches for her in vain after which he accepts the assistance of several young male camp volunteers who assure him that they can locate her. They do find her. Listen to the story to find out what happens next.Saadat Hasan Manto first published this story in 1948 in a collection of Urdu short stories titled 'Black Margins' (Siyah Hashiye). Following the publication of ‘Khol Do,’ and two other stories from this collection, he was charged with obscenity purportedly because these stories comprised a breach of the public peace. (C. Nanak Singh (b.4 July 1897 as Hans Raj – d.28 December 1971) was a poet, songwriter and novelist in the Punjabi language. His writing in support of India's independence movement led the British to arrest him. Born in a poor Punjabi Hindu family in the Jhelum district (now in Pakistan), he changed his name to Nanak Singh after adopting Sikhism. Due to poverty, he did not receive a formal education. He started his writing career at an early age, writing verses on historical events.In 1945 he wrote his popular novel "Saintly Sinner (Pavitra Paapi)" which won him acclaim. It was translated into Hindi and other Indian languages, and into English by his grandson Navdeep Singh Suri. In 1968 the book was adapted into the successful motion picture, (Pavitra Paapi), by his admirer Balraj Sahni. His 'Ikk Miyan Do Talwaran' (Two Swords in one Sheath) won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 1961.He wrote 11 short story collections, more than 50 novels, his autobiography, and a few collections of poems and songs. "Nanak Singh was the best selling novelist in India for thirty to forty years. He wrote over 50 books including novels and collection of short stories. Nanak Singh (b.4 July 1897 as Hans Raj – d.28 December 1971) was a poet, songwriter and novelist in the Punjabi language. His writing in support of India's independence movement led the British to arrest him. Born in a poor Punjabi Hindu family in the Jhelum district (now in Pakistan), he changed his name to Nanak Singh after adopting Sikhism. Due to poverty, he did not receive a formal education. He started his writing career at an early age, writing verses on historical events.In 1945 he wrote his popular novel "Saintly Sinner (Pavitra Paapi)" which won him acclaim. It was translated into Hindi and other Indian languages, and into English by his grandson Navdeep Singh Suri. In 1968 the book was adapted into the successful motion picture, (Pavitra Paapi), by his admirer Balraj Sahni. His 'Ikk Miyan Do Talwaran' (Two Swords in one Sheath) won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 1961.He wrote 11 short story collections, more than 50 novels, his autobiography, and a few collections of poems and songs. "Nanak Singh was the best selling novelist in India for thirty to forty years. He wrote over 50 books including novels and collection of short stories. "Housewife," a short story set in Canada is a reflection of the changing gender-roles between couples. Meet, the husband, is struggling to come to terms with the shifting realities which Sekha has packed very efficiently in a setting of two days or so. About the author : Harpreet Singh Sekha migrated to Canada in 1998. He lives in Surrey, British Columbia. He has observed the life-experiences of especially South Asian Canadians. He uses his piercing eye to highlight issues like discrimination, generation-gap, hypocrisy, newcomers' struggle, illegal methods of migration etc. The short stories he weaves seem to be set in the Canadian milieu while the real conflict goes on in the characters' minds. Harpreet's stories have had a far and wide reach with publication in Hindi, Punjabi and English literary magazines. So far, he has published four short-story collections, one prose book, and a translation of a history book. His body of work includes the non-fiction work 'Taxinaama,' a novel 'Hanere Raah' and short story anthologies, 'BiJi Muskra Paye,' 'Baaran Boohey,' 'Prism' and the latest 'Loondani.' The short story ‘Melanin’ explores the nuances of fair complexion preference  in the Indian society. The evil especially targets young women and this short story uncovers the complexes and thoughts that flow in the mind of a young women who is a brilliant artist but seems to have been caught in the vortex of being dark-skinned. The story is a tale of her victory over all odds.

This short story, ‘Melanin’, published in 2023, was named ‘Best Story’ by the Urmila Anand Simriti Book Award.

Jaswinder Dharmkot is a teacher by profession and a fiction writer by passion. His stories often feature little glimpses of his professional life as well. This short story collection “Melanin” has recently won the Punjab Languages Department’s Principal Sujan Singh Award (Story).

Shaheedan-e-Wafa is a great poetic work on the martyrdom of young sahibzadey of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. It was written by Hakeem Allah Yaar Khan Jogi, a Muslim sufi poet around the starting of 20th century. He was known to be impressed with Sikhi, especially the martyrdom of Sahibzadeys. He wrote this work with great passion and respect and earned blessings of the Guru.

He himself used to sing Shaheedan-e-Wafa on different occasions at Chamkaur Sahib, Nankana Sahib, Sirhind etc during Jor-Melas. He moved the crowds with his oratorical skills.

Hakim Allah Yaar Khan Jogi, was an unbiased Muslim poet/writer wrote two poems almost a century ago, one on Chamkaur, under the title Ganj-a-Shaheedan and the other on Sirhind, entitled Shaheedan-a-Wafa. His ancestors were from Deccan, but he was settled in Anarkali, Lahore. He used to wear royal Achkan n Salwar, was tall, of strong built, with a small moustache and khaskhasi beard. All in all, he looked like an Iranian mir. The poems were in the form of a homage on the heart rending tragedies of Chamkaur and Sirhind. Ganj-a-Shaheedan appeared in the year 1913 and both appeared collectively from Lahore in the year 1915. The valour displayed by the young sons of Guru Gobind Singh has been sympathetically and vividly narrated in the poems of a devout Muslim, Allah Yaar Khan. The cruelty of their murder and their fearlcssness of death which they preferred to giving up their faith finds a touching narration in "GarijiShahTdari" by Allah Yaar Khan Jogi, who used to recite it from Sikh platforms during the second and third decades of the twentieth century. Jogi Allah Yaar Khan just loved Guru Ji and with love wrote so much about Guru Ji that Muslims became very jealous, called “kafir” (unbelievers) and did not allow him to enter a Mosque for 30 years. When he had become an old man, a Qazi went to his house and said to him, “Jogia, come with me and ask for forgiveness. You have grown old and should die as a true Muslim.” Allah Yaar Khan said, “I have done nothing wrong. What I wrote about Guru Ji is the truth and I will not go back.” Hearing this the Qazi got mad and said, “Then you wanna die as a kafir?” Yaar khan replied, “I am kafir from Mohammad but not for Guru Gobind Singh Ji. I see Guru Ji sitting in Bahishat (heaven) with open arms and waiting for me. I want His love and want to die as Guru Ji’s servant.” Qazi left and Allah Yaar Khan died remembering Guru Ji every moment of his life. [SikhiWiki]

Sahibzada Ajit Singh (17) and Sahibzada Jujhar Singh (14) attained martyrdom on 8 Poh, 1704 in the battle of Chamkaur. Hakeem Allah Yaar Khan Jogi penned the elegy named “Ganj-e- Shaheedan” to describe the departure, brave fighting, and deaths of the two Sahibzadas.
