Weekly Wrap: Unpacking the latest Epstein files, and a lifesaving swim06 Feb 202600:45:29
The US Department of Justice released over 3 million documents in the latest batch of Epstein files. Despite feeling a bit intimidated by digging into it all, we decided we couldn’t look past it, so we’ve done our best to pull out the key details for you. Then, we get into where we’re at with the Liberals and the Nationals - will they get back together, or no? We also wanted to get you across the biggest thing in AI at the moment, Claude Code. And our favourite story from the week had to be the 13-year-old who made a heroic 4km swim to shore to save his family. Squiz Shortcuts: Trump’s Jeffrey Epstein headache06 Feb 202600:12:44
This is a Shortcut we made in July 2025 about the backlash towards Trump over the Epstein files. Given the final documents were released this week, we thought it'd be good to resurface it for you here. US President Donald Trump is dealing with backlash from his political base over the case of Jeffrey Epstein, the paedophile and former financier who died in jail before his case could go to trial. There’s a long history to this, and it’s arguably the most significant political issue Trump has had to deal with since he became President again in January. So in this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll cover the history between the 2 men and why it’s become such a headache for Trump. SPONSORED: If you're curious about opportunities at Nous Group and want to discover your potential doing interesting, meaningful work, you can find out more at nousgroup.com Squiz Recommends: Reading: A CNN article: 5 Big Questions about Trump’s Ties to Epstein... It gives a breakdown of their history together. Listening: This episode on The New Yorker Radio Hour podcast about MAGA’s Revolt Over Jeffrey Epstein explores the backlash from Trump’s supporters. Reading: And we’ve also found this article in the New York Times from the POV of one of Epstein’s accusers, Maria Farmer, suggesting why there’s a possibility that Trump’s and other high-profile names could be in the Epstein files… But just a heads up, you’ll need a New York Times subscription to access it. "We need to talk about it as a country": The Alice Springs Mayor on the reality of life there12 Nov 202400:32:25
Alice Springs has come and gone from national news coverage over the past few years. It started with the lapse of alcohol and pornography bans in remote communities around Alice Springs in mid-2022. Property offences increased by almost 60%, assaults rose by 38%, and domestic violence assaults doubled. Since then, steps have been taken to reinstate restrictions, but the town and its surrounding communities have remained in the national spotlight. We debated who to speak with, but all roads pointed back to Matt Paterson, the young, outspoken Mayor who won the job by just two votes in 2021. “Power affects people”: Joe Aston on his new book about Qantas01 Nov 202400:49:45
Joe Aston’s name rings out in business, politics, and media circles. If you know him, it’s probably from his time writing Rear Window for the Australian Financial Review. Joe took over the column in 2012, making it a feared and revered staple—landing a mention in Rear Window likely meant you’d found yourself on the wrong side of Joe’s sharp pen. Now, he’s out with his first book, The Chairman’s Lounge, which takes aim at Qantas through the pandemic and the Alan Joyce era. As usual, Joe’s work has stirred the pot. Interview: Tanya Notley on the critical issue of media literacy22 Oct 202400:27:25
The Bondi stabbings, the Wakely church attack, the Voice referendum, the war in the Middle East... They're just some examples of news stories that have sparked conversations that go beyond the events themselves. We're talking about the information we’re being fed: Is it harmful? Misleading? Persuasive? And what’s the intent behind it? This is all about the rise of misinformation and disinformation and the growing concern over how we, as a society, can make sense of what’s true and what’s not, especially regarding our kids. To mark media literacy week, we sit down with Associate Professor Tanya Notley. We came across her through our work on Newshounds—our media literacy program for primary school kids. She dives into the problem of misinformation, the tricky task of solving it, and her frustration with how slow progress has been. Plus, we discuss what’s at stake if we don’t get this right. Check out Tanya's work on media literarcy here and here. You can check out Newshounds here. It's currently being used in 3,400 classrooms, and we want to get it into every school. If you know a teacher, or even a parent who might be keen, share it with them! Want more News Club in your life? We've got you...
