In this episode, NPM’s Jillian Farmer speaks with Scott Maloni, Vice President of Project Development for Poseidon Water about the company’s proposed Huntington Beach Seawater Desalination Facility. 

Poseidon Water is waiting on its final state permit to build the Huntington Beach Desalination Plant, which has been 20 years in the making.

According to Maloni, the plant is modeled after the company’s desalination facility in Carlsbad, California. The Huntington Beach facility will be capable of producing 50 million gallons of drinking water a day from the Pacific Ocean.

Poseidon Water introduced the concept of both the Huntington Beach and Carlsbad facilities in the late 1990s and began permitting in the early 2000s. According to Maloni, Carlsbad was successfully permitted in 2012 and began operation in 2015. Since the facility began operating, it has produced about 80 billion gallons of drinking water and is the largest single source of local water supply in San Diego.

Before joining GE in 2015, Jamie started two companies of his own and worked at those organizations for 10 years.
