The Human Side of Digital Strategy: Why Connection Beats Clicks Every Time08 Sep 202500:37:42

This week, we’re joined by Kaia Maeve Tingley, a visionary who’s redefining the relationship between technology and real life. With over 25 years in IT and two decades as a massage and shiatsu therapist and martial arts instructor, Kaia brings a rare perspective—one that bridges the digital and the embodied.

As the founder of the Web Makers Circle, Kaia helps small business owners and founders build websites rooted in trust, authenticity, and human connection—without the hype, hustle, or cookie-cutter templates. Her journey from corporate marketing and B2B sales to creating her own approach was sparked by seeing just how disconnected most digital strategies can feel.

In this conversation, we explore how Kaia blends tech expertise with embodiment practices to create online spaces that truly reflect who people are and what they offer. From her workshops and cohort-based programs to her unique 1:1 sessions that combine bodywork and web design, Kaia shows us what’s possible when technology is put back in service of human values.

If you’ve ever felt frustrated by digital strategies that feel shallow or misaligned, this episode will inspire you to imagine—and build—a new way forward.

You can find more about Kaia here: https://www.webmakerscircle.com/

The Weight of Ignorance: Terri M. Roberts on Feminist Theory & Fitness Pedagogy01 Sep 202500:51:44

This week, we sit down with Terri M. Roberts — educator, speaker, researcher, and founder of The Pink Dumbbell Problem. With over 20 years of experience in education and leadership, Terri brings a powerful voice to the intersections of fitness, feminism, and philosophy.

As the creator of The Pink Dumbbell Problem YouTube channel, based on her groundbreaking master’s thesis, Terri is the first researcher to connect feminist theory and agnotology—the study of ignorance—with fitness instruction pedagogy. Through this work, she challenges stereotypes about women’s abilities and reshapes how we think about movement, strength, and societal expectations.

Terri’s journey is also deeply personal. After surviving a devastating car crash caused by an impaired driver, she has become a voice for resilience—sharing how fitness training supported her recovery and inspiring others through her advocacy with MADD Canada.

Her impact spans far beyond the gym: she has served as Executive Director of the NSFA, contributed nationally to fitness leadership education, and received numerous awards including the MSVU Alumnae Legacy Award for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal for services to education.

In addition to her fitness and advocacy work, Terri is also a published author of Celtic language learning books, bringing her love of culture and education into classrooms and teacher training programs.

Join us for a conversation that explores the power of knowledge, resilience, and reimagining what’s possible when we challenge societal narratives.

John Swain - Helping Small Businesses Succeed25 Oct 202100:30:47

John once lived in Bermuda. For some reason sun and sand just didn’t appeal to him the same way as the cold, harsh, Nova Scotia winters. Despite this quirk John is, last time we checked, perfectly sane. So we’ll have to suppose his love of Bridgewater comes from family ties and long standing community connections. When not pursuing his dream of being the president of an accounting firm founded on the/principles/of providing anxiety reduction and personalized support for small business owners, he’s cooking, playing/old-time/rock& roll, and fussing just a little too much over his hair. He also, along with his wife, encourages his two daughters to be the best people they can be through community involvement and charitable giving.

Before hanging his own shingle John worked with excellent companies like Grant Thornton, Bank of Bermuda, and Olympia Capital.  His company, Swain CPA have offices in Bridgewater and Halifax Nova Scotia and serve all the Canadian provinces.

John’s community investment includes being a Committee Member of ‘Christmas on the LaHave’, Past Director Bridgewater Area Chamber of Commerce, Past Director Lunenburg West PC Association, Founding Chair of Lunenburg County Young Professionals Network, Past Director of Finance St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Past Deputy Grand Knight Knights of Columbus, current Board Member with Devour! The Food Film Fest, committee member for 100 Bluenosers Who Care & Champion for the MIT REAP Team South Shore.

Alan Pink - Helping Tenants get a Commercial Lease that Supports Them18 Oct 202100:27:42
Negotiating a  new lease is challenging work. You are making a long term financial commitment so it is important to understand the terms and processes being described in complicated legalistic language. Alan can help. Reviewing and negotiating new leases is something he has been doing for 16 years — he has negotiated over 200 of them. Before you sign a lease, it is comforting to know it was reviewed by someone that is putting your interests first. He started doing this because he was working on leases for a large company with 117 locations and many of those leases were written to favor the Landlord. Some commercial leasing agents did not seem to be truly working on his behalf so he had to learn how to be a good advocate for his company. He would like to share the skills he gained through that experience.

Jack Barrett - Selling Anything and Everything13 Sep 202100:29:29

Jack Barrett is from rural Newfoundland and Labrador. Jack was raised in his parent’s business, Barrett’s General Store, where they sold anything and everything. No item was ever too much of a challenge for his parents to find, import if necessary, and make available to their customers and clients near and far. This “can-do, can-get, can-sell-anything attitude” was impressed upon Jack from an early age. In fifth grade, he came home one day from school and found that his bed was gone. Jack’s mother had sold the bed to one of their customers earlier that day. This attitude of taking on any challenge, small or great, served Jack as a foundation throughout his career with the Canadian Armed Forces (Royal Canadian Navy) and is now at the core of how he treats his own clients as the owner of Fully Promoted in Halifax.

Jack spent 33 years with the Royal Canadian Navy serving as a communications operator and electronics technician with the final 19 years as a Navy Chaplain. Jack and his wife Christina met onboard a Navy Destroyer in 1990 as they were preparing for the Persian Gulf war when Iraq invaded Kuwait. Christina retired after 20 years with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Jet Engine Technician and has since devoted her time to raising their 2 sons, Alexander and Aaron.

After moving around Canada as a Navy Chaplain, in 2018, Jack retired from the military and Christina decided Nova Scotia would become their permanent home. We immediately set about building our ‘forever home’ in Glen Haven which they designed and Jack became the project manager and general contractor for the build.

On completion of their home, Jack immediately jumped into the business world by purchasing a franchise called Fully Promoted. Again, Jack did not shy away from the unknown with this challenge and he set himself a lofty goal. Not only to start a new business with no name recognition, but to expand the business with an expansion of some description every year with g the first business opening during the height of the COVID 19 pandemic in 2020. Jack is on track to expand in 2021 with the purchase of another franchise territory and opening a full production facility which will service both locations and others in the industry as well. Of course, Jack has surrounded himself with a stellar team in which their youngest son, Aaron, is the supply, production and procurement manager for Fully Promoted.

In Jack’s spare time, he likes to motorcycle with Aaron and sail his 38-foot sailing yacht single-handedly out of St. Margarets Sailing Club in St. Margaret’s Bay.

Jack already has 2 ventures, beyond “Fully Promoted'', on the drawing board for his “next” retirement projects.

Angela Malejczuk - Learning from Bad People and Experiences19 Jul 202100:40:37

Angela is a self-described "career drifter".
Work experience timeline:

  1. Gliding Instructor. No mentoring, lots of partying.
  2. Admin Clerk. No mentoring. Officer Commanding her unit cared more about himself than offering a full-time position.
  3. Community festival volunteer co-ordinator. Temp while the full time person was out on mat leave. No mentoring.
  4. Logistics Customs Brokerage (UPS)
  5. Business analyst (UPS) … UPS misogynistic work culture, company policy to pay men more for equal work and make it against company policy to compare pay with colleagues so they could keep this a secret… no mentoring happening here
  6. IT Support Specialist / Network Specialist for DND
  7. Entrepreneur / Web App Designer
  8. Realtor (consistently in the top 10% for all Royal LePage realtors nationally, a few years of top 5% performance).  Worked at Royal LePage Performance Realty in Ottawa.  The best career move I ever made.  Amazing company culture.  No single mentor, but the culture there itself filled that role.  Incredible colleagues, supportive, encouraging, high integrity and excellence were the norm.  Everyone who had been there before me was in a sense a mentor.  No one gave you any business, you had to do that yourself, but there was no shortage of colleagues giving you good advice on how to make that happen, but there was no single mentor.  Everyone in the company was a mentor.
  9. Young retiree (48 years old) burned out.  All the moves, separation from her husband (even though by choice), a few health issues, and the 24/7 nature of real estate wiped me out. She could have used Geoff Crinean in those days!
  10. AirBnB host.
  11. More rested, healing in progress, and now bored returning to work in a new industry again selling cyber security now in her 50s.

Angela has a BBA from UNB Fredericton, but her personal interests are around human performance and excellence so she has studied nutrition, hypnosis, and NLP as personal interests.  She loves outdoor activities:  hiking, biking, kayaking.

Mai Alnabhan - The Journey of Self-Discovery07 Jun 202100:22:21

Mai was professionally trained as an architect, urban planner and heritage preservation specialist. Her professional life journey offered her an amazing opportunity to work in many countries around the world in various capacities for over 20 years. In 2002, Mai immigrated to Canada, and in 2012 she choose to call Nova Scotia home.

Mai’s fascination in spirituality and her strong belief in life after death led her to a lifelong exploration of the subject. She started experimenting with self-hypnosis and regression at an early age and was able since to visit many of her own past lives. In 2008, she became a certified hypnotist and was able to share her gift with family, friends, and acquaintances. She was thrilled with the powerful feelings, great insights, and lasting benefits of these sessions.

Video and Photography- with Stu Ducklow25 Jan 202100:34:07

Stu has had a rather long and winding road in life. Long because he's 73. Winding because I’ve had dozens of jobs and careers. I’ve been a banker, a bush pilot, and an all-around newsman on small dailies across Canada and in England.

I’ve worked in the media for 30+ years as a reporter, photographer, editor, and graphic designer on dailies across Canada and in England. I’ve won awards from Canadian Press and Associated Press, shot an exclusive film of Prince Charles, had my lens smacked by John McEnroe, and been punched in the mouth by small-time thugs in court. Graphic and web design is less hazardous and more creative. It’s also very satisfying because I get to play an important role in my clients’ activities. I love exploring print and multimedia options with anybody who’s interested, and I’m not worried about closing a deal.

Though I’ve been creating videos for several years I’ve recently bought new equipment so I can do a better job. Outside of work, I’m an enthusiastic sax player, short story writer, and painter. I’ve taken sax courses at Dalhousie, studied painting at St. Martin’s School of Art in London, and enrolled in a writing class with a local author. I’ve done pro bono work for the Dartmouth Players Theatre, the Halifax Music Coop, the Creative Music Workshop, raised funds for Shelter Nova Scotia and served meals to Syrian refugees for the Immigrants Settlement Association of NS. I have a lovely and interesting daughter, Stella, and even though I’m divorced, my ex-wife is still my best friend.

Writing to Heal: Reclaiming Strength Through Journaling ft. Julianna Sheriff19 May 202500:28:01

Today’s guest is Jewels — a mental health advocate, educator, certified life coach, and the founder of Hopeful Horizons, the brand behind Breathe, a premium guided mental health journal that helps midlife women feel more grounded and calm, while reducing anxiety and stress. Hopeful Horizons is dedicated solely to Jewels’s line of premium guided journals that offer simple, supportive tools to help women reconnect with themselves. Her earlier journals, created under her broader company Jewels Wellness Journals, helped her test and grow her vision — but Breathe is the heart of the brand and the beginning of something bigger.

Jewels didn’t grow up believing this kind of life was possible. Raised in a loving but abusive home, and bullied throughout school, she grew up without mentors, without guidance, and without confidence in herself or her abilities. For years, she believed she was meant to quietly work for others and retire with just enough to get by. But throughout her life, she crossed paths with people who saw something in her — mentors and connectors who helped her start to see her own worth. Little by little, her life began to change. Her education grew, her healing deepened, and her belief in what was possible started to shift.

Now at 58, Jewels is walking a new path — one built on courage, connection, and purpose. She’s recently launched a YouTube channel to share her story, and she’s working on a journaling masterclass and a series of in-person workshops to help women build simple journaling practices into their lives. She’s also developing a course to help women move from fear to courage — because she knows firsthand that fear isn’t a stop sign. It’s an invitation.
