| 146: Spirit or Science? The Third Man Factor. | 08 May 2023 | 01:02:21 | |
We’ve all experienced it – the feeling of someone watching us, or in the room with us when we are by all accounts seemingly alone. A shift in the air or a tingle down your spine usually sets off these spider senses. Traditionally, when we think of this feeling, we are afraid. But what happens when this unseen force is helpful? And provides companionship in times of desperation and need, in circumstances of life or death? Today we travel the globe and through time to visit stories of survivors from all walks of life to discuss “The Third Man” and ponder where exactly he comes from. Our Merch store has reopened with all new designs! https://nationalparkafterdark.shop/ Who are you? One of the most basic questions at face value, but amongst the deepest and most thought-provoking, soul-searching prompts there is. Most commonly when asked this – you respond simply with your name. Our names are an incredibly important piece of our identity. We take pride in them and pass them on to future generations to honor the ones we love that came before. Today we visit our home state of New Hampshire to visit the White Mountains National Forest to investigate some of the darker tales that led to the naming of some of its most celebrated features. Take to Google, type in “US Virgin Islands” and you’ll be met with photos of turquoise waters and smiling faces sipping on drinks atop sparkling white sand. This destination is among the most popular in the Caribbean for vacationers, but it was once at the core of the transatlantic slave trade. Today we discuss what has gone down in history as the 1733 Akwamu Insurrection, an event in which thousands of enslaved Africans took fate into their own hands as they rose up against their oppressors - an event which was among the first, longest running and bloodiest rebellions in North American history. | 136: Mauled with Jeremy Evans | 20 Mar 2023 | 00:50:12
Today we had the opportunity to sit down with Jeremy Evans. He is an avid outdoorsman, family man and author. Growing up in Alberta he fell in love with the outdoors and dedicated most of his life to being in it - often times alone - deep in the backcountry. It was on one of those solo adventures in August of 2017 when he had what he describes as an “oh shit” moment when he witnessed a terrifying sight - a lone grizzly cub. Instinctually he knew mama was nearby, and he was right. Mauled Lessons Learned from A Grizzly Bear Attack details what happened next that forever changed Jeremy, but didn’t stop him. | 134: Dirtbags of Dope Lake. Yosemite National Park. | 13 Mar 2023 | 01:02:47
There’s something special about a good old fashioned treasure hunt that never grows old, no matter when the story took place or who was involved. From finding veins of gold in Alaska to buried loot in the desert, striking it rich in this way is a fantasy. But sometimes, fantasy becomes reality, and it changes everything. When treasure in the form of 6,000 pounds of high-grade Mexican marijuana fell from the California sky during a plane crash in the winter of 1976, lives were changed and lives were lost – and legend was carved into the soul of Yosemite National Park. | 127: Bruno of Borneo. Gunung Mulu National Park. Part 1. | 06 Feb 2023 | 01:02:44
Home is where the heart is. This phrase that is scrawled across on wooden sign boards and hung in countless houses across the world may be cliche, but it’s true. Bruno Manser may have been born in Switzerland, but his heart was in Borneo. A place where he fell in love with the jungle and the people in it. It was paradise, but it was in peril. The home Bruno found was in serious danger. A home he was willing to fight for the death to protect. | 123: A Strand in the Web. Torngat Mountains National Park. | 16 Jan 2023 | 01:19:14
“Whatever happens to the beasts also happens to man. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the children of the earth.” Those words spoken by Chief Seattle centuries ago merely echoed what his people knew for a time immemorable, and what modern science is now proving – we are not separate from the environment, we are of it. Our actions, or inactions, have long lasting ripple effects on everything around us, and while we may not see the results in our lifetimes, they are becoming apparent in places like the Arctic, where the consequences of our actions are rearing their heads in a fight for survival. | 234: The Solved Shenandoah Murders with Kathryn Miles | 01 Jul 2024 | 01:01:22
In June of 1996 two women, Julie Williams and Lollie Winans, were found brutally murdered in Shenandoah National Park. Their murderer (or murderers) were never found and the case has remained unsolved, until now. On June 20, 2024 the FBI announced that the assailant has been identified as Walter Leo Jackson Sr. Today we sit down for the second time, with Kathryn Miles, author and investigative journalist who has dedicated years of her life researching this case and uncovering faults in the investigation. While the FBI has closed the case, she unveils in this interview that there are a lot more questions that need to be answered, including the possibility of more victims. This case might be labeled as closed, but in reality, this new information has just opened up a whole new investigation. If you have any information concerning this case, please contact the FBI’s Toll-Free tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324). For this episode we follow the 72 year battle for women to have the right to vote. Women are beaten, tortured, spit on, and imprisoned. But one night in history was especially brutal. Today The Night of Terror serves as a reminder of female solidarity and resistance. It is a reminder of how strong and powerful women are and just how much they are willing to fight and sacrifice for their rights.
