| My Music Episode 405 - Beauty In Chaos | 30 Jul 2024 | 00:32:51 | |
LA-based collective Beauty In Chaos release their fourth long-play record 'Dancing With Angels' on July 24 via 33.3 Music Collective. Their fourth album cements BIC's legacy for crafting captivating and imagination-stirring music with eight diverse, riveting tracks on offer. BIC has also just unveiled the video for 'Holy Ground', a lush offering featuring Patrik Mata of seminal darkwave band Kommunity FK, Beauty In Chaos was formed in 2018 by guitarist Michael Ciravolo (formerly of Human Drama and Gene Loves Jezebel and currently President of Schecter Guitars) with Grammy nominated producer Michael Rozon (Ministry) as a revolving evolving sonic entity. To date, Beauty In Chaos has involved numerous music luminaries, including members of The Cure, Ministry, Cheap Trick, The Offspring, Gene Loves Jezebel, Marilyn Manson, Human Drama, Bauhaus, Nine Inch Nails, Van Halen, A Flock of Seagulls, dUg Pinnick (Kings X), ICE-T, guitar icon Zakk Wylde, Rolan Bolan, and many others. "The title was inspired by a painting from a talented German artist Maren Platzhoff, which also became the album’s cover. As Michael Rozon and I began writing the music for this release, I knew I wanted to blend artists from our first two releases with some amazing new members to our BIC family," says Michael Ciravolo. This eight song release features BIC alumni Ashton Nyte, Holy Wars firecracker Kat Leon, and both Wayne and Cinthya Hussey. Ciravolo shares “I love bringing in ‘less famous’ but certainly no less talented artists to the fold, and I think this album does just that”. Leo Luganskiy, Julian Shah-Tayler, former Silence In The Snow frontwoman Cynthia Isabella, The Bellwether Syndicate’s William and Sarah Faith, and Patrik Mata (main-man of seminal darkwave band Kommunity FK) bring immense and diverse talents to “Dancing With Angels”. Ciravolo describes this album as sort of a "sonic regression and a sonic progression", noting “I meant this as a positive thing, taking some of the post-rock elements of our debut album, the stark dark bits that run through ‘The Storm Before The Calm' and the gothy dreamy-gaze of 'Behind The Veil’. It was definitely going a bit backwards to take a few steps forward!”
| My Music Episode 315 - Sabatta | 07 Nov 2023 | 00:30:51 | |
London alternative-psychedelic rock artist Sabatta has released his new single 'Get Over Yourself', the second taste of his new album 'How To Get Even’ (out on November 17 via Blackfriars Entertainment) with a video that introduces the unique guitar - The Pick! Aka AfroGuitar! ‘Get Over Yourself' deals with ‘build em up, break em down’ celebrity culture via a barrage of grimy riffs, pumping bass and pounding drums. This relentless rocker is anchored by a heavy and hypnotic chorus, which backs the vocal mantra of the track’s title! Also included is a shredfest solo, as ferocious as a social media comment section! Beware, no one is safe, as the saying goes ‘the internet is undefeated!’ Revolving around guitarist and songwriter Yinka Oyewole, who was raised in Essex and is of Nigerian lineage, Sabatta crafts a raw and individual sound with spiky guitar and an inimitable voice, like a mix of Hendrix, QOTSA and early Red Hot Chili Peppers strained through the sieve of South London. And it's no wonder with musical influences ranging from Curtis Mayfield, Prince, Tupac and Hendrix to Bad Brains, Thin Lizzy, Parliament / Funkadelic and Black Sabbath. "Inspiration for ‘Get Over Yourself’ came from the current thirst for fallen idols. It’s like a modern day version of human sacrifice, but lives have been replaced by reputations and the Gods are the insatiable beasts of social media opinion. Beware, no one is safe, as the saying goes ‘the internet is undefeated!" says Yinka Oyewole. #NewMusic #Interview #SocialMedia

Merging Dream-Pop and Indie-Pop, Mollie pairs playful, yet intimate vocals with a soundscape of hazy, echo-laden guitars and synthesisers. | My Music Episode 311 - Vieon | 01 Nov 2023 | 00:41:23
VIEON is the electronic music project of Matt Wild, based in Coventry, UK. Expanding to a live four-piece including VJ Adrian Brian Thompson, sound engineer Stephen Dorphin and keyboardist Ricardo Autobahn, their sound is inspired by 70s and 80s electronic film soundtracks and lush synthpop filtered through a long-time appreciation for post-rock and IDM. Debut album The Sound of the Future released on Manchester label AnalogueTrash in 2014, soon followed by concept album Fly By Light, dealing with themes of exploration, loss and opportunity; an immediate hit with critics including Emily Oldfield of Louder Than War who described it as “a trip you certainly won’t regret taking… powerful music opening up new mind space”. VIEON have raised their profile dramatically in recent years with a series of engaging audio-visual shows in the UK and Europe famed for their dramatic and ambitious scope, including banks of synthesizers, theremin, keytar, live-produced projections, and synchronised light display. These culminated at the end of 2019 in the sold-out Lost Worlds Live shows in Coventry and Manchester. The band is looking forward to 2022 with an expanded live show, new music, and collaborations in the pipeline.
| My Music Episode 310 - John Douglas | 24 Oct 2023 | 00:17:04 | |
One of Scotland’s finest songwriters - John Douglas of Trashcan Sinatras fame - presents his debut solo album, released via Scotland's Reveal Records, along with a self filmed nostalgic video for the album's opening track 'Lost'. This record presents an intimate snapshot of the talent, charisma and depth of this celebrated Scottish indie songsmith - the start of a new chapter in Douglas' creative life as he simultaneously looks back at a lifetime of musical adventures and accolades and moves forwards. The album 'John Douglas' features new recordings of some of John's favourite Trashcan Sinatras material, alongside new songs he has written and his own rendition of the Prefab Sprout classic ‘We Let The Stars Go’. The eleven songs on this record were performed solo, recorded live at Kyoti Studio in Glasgow (with no overdubs) by producer Mark Freegard (New Model Army, Lush, The Breeders, Del Amitri, Marillion), who also mixed and mastered the album. “I’ve often been encouraged by friends over the years to make a solo album, but the timing or inclination didn’t flow. Last year - out of nowhere - everything suddenly felt right and the process was quick and natural. Mark just set the mics up and I played my songs. No other musicians or overdubs. Me and my guitar. That way, I became the songs and they became me. The finished record, though varied in song styles, has a mood to it… it’s warm, thoughtful and quiet.. as I generally aspire to be," says John Douglas.

| My Music Episode 307 - Skinny Lister | 20 Oct 2023 | 00:27:15 | |
“Mantra” is the latest single to be lifted from the Skinny Lister's upcoming album ‘Shanty Punk’ out 20 October, via Xtra Mile Recordings. The track is bright and beatific in its message, set to a tune simply born for a good old fashioned barn dance. Sat amongst typically more driving and stomping tracks of the album, “Mantra” offers a welcome moment of reflection and is intended to bring a slightly different flavour to proceedings. Led by the band’s leading lady Lorna Heptinstall, it sees her releasing her inner Dolly Parton across a track dashed with a hint of country and a pinch of Cajun music. Based on the glass half-full mantra that Skinny Lister themselves live-by. The sweet country two-step of “Mantra” follows the full-force folk/punk of previous single, “Company Of The Bar”, with both tracks due to feature on ‘Shanty Punk’, Skinny Lister’s sixth, and arguably definitive new album. The follow-up to 2021’s ‘A Matter of Life & Love’, a freewheeling record that paid homage to all the greatest things in life; ‘Shanty Punk’ goes one further with a concept record that’s simply all about: Skinny Lister. Skinny Lister will be taking ‘Shanty Punk’ out to the masses this Winter, with the quintet will be putting it to the test with an extensive run of UK shows throughout November and December. With a reputation for one of the most uplifting and exhilarating shows in the biz
| My Music Episode 306 - Peter G. Holmström | 20 Oct 2023 | 00:34:01 | |
From the city of Portland and the depths of one's psyche comes Pete International Airport, which revolves around Peter G. Holmström of The Dandy Warhols, who has released the new album 'It Felt Like The End of the World' via Little Cloud Records. Their third album, this is a meticulously crafted psychedelic rock journey into the dark heart ofelectronica. It is also a triumph of process and vision. Mixed by Jeremy Sherrer at Spooky Electric Co. (Modest Mouse, The Shins, The Dandy Warhols), the album was mastered by Dave Coley at Elysian Mastering. "This record was mostly written and recorded during the pandemic so sonically and lyrically it can’t help but be influenced by what we all went through. There is a melancholy darkness as well as a peaceful beauty. The album title came from a “fairytale/poem” that is whispered at the end of 'Sea Of Eyes'. It perfectly captures the hopeful/scary feeling of change that comes at the end of something," says Peter G. Holmström.

| My Music Episode 299 - CR and the Nones | 25 Sep 2023 | 00:32:42 | |
New Jersey band CR and The Nones present their new album 'The Ghosts Are Coming Home', released via Montclair-based Magic Door Record Label. Gennone came of age playing in various projects in suburban New Jersey, including his former band, CR and The Degenerates, who released five albums from 2016 to 2018. This new project has allowed him to expand the unique hybrid of folk, country, punk, and heartland rock. CR and The Nones retains the Degenerates' core of Chris Gennone, lead/slide guitarist Jim Abbott, and bassist John Dewitt. Recalling past Garden State guitar music, Gennone’s soulful vocals and his band’s driving hooks invoke roads, journeys, and forward motion in general. Counting Neil Young and Jason Molina among major influences, his sound has always been propulsive. In 2020, CR and The Nones released their debut album 'Living In Fear' via Favorite Friend Records. Mixed by renowned producer Ray Ketchem (Guided By Voices, Luna, Versus, Elk City, Gramercy Arms) at Magic Door Recording Studio in Montclair, NJ, this album was selfproduced by Chris Gennone (CR to his friends) and mastered by Nick Bolton at Bolton Sound in Jersey City. 'The Ghosts Are Coming Home' is a culmination of the sound and aesthetic that CR Gennone has been building over many years and multiple bands. With an expansiveness and introspection that recalls The War on Drugs or early My Morning Jacket, the ten tracks here showcase an irresistible sincerity and heartfelt delivery. "I wrote and recorded this album before, during and after Covid, and I lived in five different places during this time, so it was a different experience than other stuff I’ve made. In the past, we’ve kind of just rolled with it and come up with guitar leads, riffs, and sounds on the fly. With Covid lockdowns and the help of some friends, this record really gave me the time and space to write and play my own leads, sing my own harmonies, change arrangements, and take on more of the production aspect of it," says CR Gennone.
| My Music Episode 298 - KOHLA | 25 Sep 2023 | 00:39:51 | |
It's all KOHLA The seven track LP is the highly-anticipated album from this talented artist who has already forged a strong fan base thanks to previous singles One and Only premiered by Wonderland Magazine, Sweetest Love, which was awarded Single of the Week on BBC Radio Scotland, and Bedroom which was hailed as ‘an answer to pop misogyny’ by The Herald Newspaper. Kohla is the project of Rachel Alice Johnson, a singer-songwriter and musician with a classical background. An interdisciplinary Scottish artist, she is a singer, songwriter, producer, fine artist, dancer, poet and a graduate of the Edinburgh College of Art. She is also the founder of Popgirlz Scotland, a support group for women in music, and lectures about feminism at international universities. A self-taught producer, working primarily in orchestral programming on Ableton software in her home studio (statistics show that only 2.9% of producers are female). She has recently been selected by Help Musicians to undertake production and mixing training with professional female Ableton trainer Anna Lakatos. Speaking about the new album, Kohla said: “I’ve always felt incredibly fascinated by the concept of romantic love; how cinematic and luxurious it feels to be adored by another human being. How rare it is. And how devastating it can feel to lose. “I wrote ‘Romance’ whilst enduring a summer of filmic heartbreak. In desperate need of an emotional release, I turned to my piano for comfort. I wrote personally and vulnerably, for what felt like the very first time. Within eight weeks, ‘Romance’ had written itself. “In hindsight, ‘Romance’ feels very much to me like a ‘coming-of-age’ album. From a female perspective, I realised I had grown up with a blissful naive idea of romance, whether formed through Disney or education. I felt impassioned to detach from this oppressive ideology, where women require a sub-standard partner to provide safety or validation. It feels emotional to let go of the little girl who wanted to believe in so much. But it’s left me with a valuable perspective - the love I found for myself is worth so much more.” As a clarinettist she performed in school orchestras and competed in national competitions, while at home, her father would play Classic FM, subtly exposing her to masterpieces by Beethoven, Mozart and Debussy. Alongside these formative influences, Kohla draws inspiration from legendary 60s artists such as Sam Cooke and Etta James, and her cinematic production nods to the likes of Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey and FKA Twigs. ‘Romance’ is co-produced by Kohla’s creative partner Dave Lloyd, of the Edinburgh band Stillhound, and her sonic stories are coloured through a blend of digital and analogue, a vivid illustration of her sepia-tinged memories. Written during a summer that Kohla describes as a period of “filmic heartbreak”, ‘Romance’ is the sound of emotional release and vulnerability. During the album’s creation, she took inspiration from a range of sources, including daily hikes, meditation, painting and reading, the legendary soul and jazz of Etta James, Sam Cooke and Nat King Cole, Jackie Kay’s poetry and Sofia Coppola’s motion pictures. ‘Romance’ marks the culmination of a rich and deeply creative and heartfelt chapter in Kohla’s creative journey and musical career, and is an assured and alluring debut album from this exceptional artist. #KOHLA #Music #Popgirlz

| My Music Episode 294 - Indira May | 19 Sep 2023 | 00:37:03 | |
Indira May is an artist who is currently living in London. She co-owns and runs an independent music label and film production company called TRASH – “run by women. for everyone”. Indira writes: "My recent release is an EP titled Simpler Things, which touches on subjects such as climate change, politics and becoming a woman. Most of the songs on the EP were actually written a few years ago. They’ve evolved over time, been played at gigs in different ways, and the way in which they relate to my life has also changed. I’m happy with how they sound now though – I’m starting to find my style and voice as I grow into a more confident individual. I think if I released these songs a few years ago I wouldn’t have done them justice. I moved to Brighton when I was 19 years old; I followed a guy there that I fancied at the time – classic. I went to a music university for about a year but it wasn’t an environment I felt comfortable in for various different reasons. I decided to carry on living in Brighton, got a job as a pretzel baker (not as glamorous as it sounds… does it sound glamorous?) and started making music and gigging with people I’d become friends with. At the time, I was obsessed with Jazz and Hip Hop – I still am – but nowadays I’m also exploring new sounds. I think you can probably hear the Jazz influences in the EP. I was listening to a lot of Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Tom Waits and my favourite, Chet Baker. Originally, I started writing a few of the songs with a duo who are now known as Dysfunktion. We never got round to finishing them or recording them properly but I was playing them at gigs around the UK quite a lot. The EP reflects a sort of journey, I guess, related to becoming the woman I am today – it’s quite personal and introspective. I started writing these particular songs at 19 years old and I’m now 24, so I’ve grown quite a bit since then. My perspective on things and how I view myself is very different. I moved to London last year in the middle of the pandemic to carry on pursuing music. I signed a deal which wasn’t smooth sailing. It left me feeling frustrated and misunderstood and I eventually left. That experience was what pushed me to form my co-owned company TRASH, which promotes bridging inequality and creating opportunities for women within the creative industries. I tried to channel as much frustration as I could into being creative, which pushed me to finally wrap up my EP. I ended up finishing it with a producer called Alfie Aukett. It was a great couple of months. I rented a studio and really came into my own. I got comfortable using the equipment, working with other musicians and being able to take and give constructive criticism. It was definitely a crucial learning process which has got me to where I am today. This release is special to me because it marks the beginning of my musical journey. It’s been a mixture of breakthroughs, all consuming anxiety, hating the songs, loving the songs, never wanting to hear them again, playing them obsessively. I’ve shed old insecurities, old ways of thinking, people, places and now I’m ready to start a new process of learning and evolving. I’m really excited to start experimenting more, finding out what other layers there are to my brain and also to start doing shows again. I want to sing the songs off my EP to people, in real life, I’ve missed that." Copy - Copyright © WPGM #LiveInterviews #MyMusic #EP #SocialMedia

| My Music Episode 291 - Lady Larke | 18 Sep 2023 | 00:36:31 | |
Lady Larke’s punchy first single ‘Animal’ leaves fans roaring! No men were harmed in the making of Lady Larke’s first single ‘Animal’ - but the all-female project certainly packs a punch. After a friend’s boyfriend told her she was “too much” and “not ladylike” enough, London-born Lady Larke’s response was to create a song celebrating individuality - and rejecting others’ expectations. Releasing on August 30, expect a powerful anthem brimming with satirical straight talking and bold statements wrapped up in an addictive melody. For those who refuse to accept each person as they are, her chorus ends on the advice: “Time for you to find a therapist”. “This song is a fearless voice of encouragement for people who’ve been belittled and judged simply due to their gender or appearance,” she reflects. “I obviously can’t empathise with everyones’ struggles - nor do I claim to - but I am a fierce ally. This song’s about finally rejecting how everyone else wants you to be and celebrating that new-found liberation.” ‘Animal’ was co-written, produced and mastered by women - of which Lady Larke is immeasurably proud. Not only is her aim to lift up women in this rebellious bop dripping with shrewdness and sass, but in the industry as a whole. The single is from her debut EP ‘Timelines’, which will drop in October. As ‘Animal’ demonstrates, Lady Larke’s calling is to write music that deeply resonates with the listener - and empowers them in their lowest moments. The candid four-song record brazenly tackles personal subjects with sharp wit, including facing up to shame, and refusing to hit milestones like marriage and children by the “expected” age. “I write songs that myself and my friends really need to hear. Especially when it seems everyone around us has their lives sorted. My songs are based on real conversations that we’re having,” she said. “I want everyone listening, whatever they’re going through, to know that they’re not alone.” The classically trained singer quit her successful job in journalism to finally realise her dream - a burning drive to connect with people through her soul-baring songs. Her music is defined by three pillars: humour, courageous honesty and the emboldenment of others. #MyMusic #Interviews #SocialMedia

| My Music Episode 288 - Theo Adler | 12 Sep 2023 | 00:28:20 | |
Born in London, Theo Adler began playing piano and guitar at the age of five and later started writing songs after hearing Ben Folds Five’s Whatever And Ever Amen. Inspired by the likes of Ian Dury, Rolling Stones, Gorillaz, Jungle and Radiohead, Theo weaves his own spin into the songs and recordings he makes. Speaking of ‘Old City Souls’, he says, “I wrote this thinking that some things can be better expressed through music than words. The main riff is a major/minor riff, expressing that feeling. With the drums we wanted to go for something fast and I was hoping to go down the drum and bass route, as I was a teenage fan of the genre” Since he was young, Theo has been making music and trying to find new areas in his writing which personally gave him excitement/fulfilment. “I would call it a brit-rock fusion,” continues Theo about the forthcoming EP. “I listen to anything really and am always finding elements of those that I like, too many that I can’t list them. Being passionate about production myself, I finished school with a couple hundred demos made using Logic Pro 9, which I was eager to show to anyone I could” After travelling the likes of Germany and South East Asia, the EP has been written over the course of five years. In 2019, Theo started collaborating with producer Luke Potashnick at his new studio The Wool Hall in Somerset. Previously occupied by Tears for Fears and Van Morrison, The Wool Hall has also seen the likes of The Smiths, Joni Mitchell, The Rolling Stones and Paul Weller passing through. Theo continues, “I was lucky enough to be introduced to Luke Potashnick- a fellow South London native- and I was instantly smitten by his musicality and his sonic style. We made an initial demo together that turned out great and once Luke had set up in Somerset at his new studio, we got to work on this EP” “We recorded about half of the songs before I needed to go back to keep working, making ends meet in London teaching piano and guitar. During this time I travelled to Thailand for a couple of weeks, which really inspired me, and wrote a few songs - about three of those ended up being in this EP. What was really enjoyable was experiencing the spin Luke added to them” With a broad blend of genres, Theo’s music is truly a marvellous mixture of some of the greats. Storytelling and creating a unique musical fusion, his music is a better version of himself that inspires others to do the same. | My Music Episode 277 - Peter Wise | 07 Sep 2023 | 00:36:50
Peter Wise is a singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, based in Brooklyn, New York. His sound marries introspective lyricism with bluesy guitar lines, laid back rhythms, anthemic hooks, and soulful vocals. It is both familiar and distinct, combining his love for the early seventies, southern California folk /rock storytelling, nineties Neo-soul and R&B grooves and modern pop / rock melodies to create a style uniquely his own. His latest single “Only Gotta Start” is the first to be released off of his upcoming 13-track album and sees the rebirth of Wise as an artist, as he enters a new chapter of being unapologetically himself. Written, performed, produced, mixed and mastered entirely by himself, this new track sees Wise taking complete control over the music he creates. “Only Gotta Start” is a song about letting go - letting go of dark thoughts, letting go of pride and ego, and letting go of hurt and frustration. Wise confides, “I was feeling pretty burned out with my life at the time I wrote this song. I felt that, despite being extremely busy and making a concerted effort to move forward professionally and personally, I wasn’t making any forward progress. I really wanted to move on in my life, see progress in my career and progress in letting go of a past relationship.” “Only Gotta Start” is a message of renewal and a reminder to others that when ghosts of the past seem to haunt our present and/or future, all we have to do, and ultimately can do, is make the conscious decision to change our thinking, be grateful for what we do have, and let go of the weight of whatever it is that seems to stop us from moving forward. Sonically, the new song is inspired by the likes of Bruno Major, Billie Marten and The 1975. Through jangly guitars, warm vocals and an upbeat, feel-good rhythm, Wise never fails to put a smile on your face. The creation of the track also involved some experimental techniques, with the musician sharing, “I found my older sister’s child-sized violin that she had when she first started playing and I tried to make music with that. I’m no violinist, but I found that trying to make music out of an instrument that I had no technical ability with forced me to be much more creative. I ended up finding a way to pick the violin and resample it to add the strings sounds that you hear in the intro and choruses.” The upcoming album touches on a multitude of real, raw and relatable themes, including struggling with getting older, not being who you thought you’d be, and not being able to get over past relationships. A true encapsulation of who Wise is, the release is some of his strongest work to date. He shares, “I’ve discovered the importance of calling myself an artist and working to be that. An artist is someone who takes in the world around them, processes it and creates their interpretation and understanding of themselves, others and the world they live in through their form of expression. That’s what I love most about music and why I make music: to share with others how I see and process things.”
| My Music Episode Episode 402 - Emma Elizabeth | 26 Jul 2024 | 00:35:54 | |
Finding Harmony: Emma's Musical Journey from Solitude to Stage In the latest episode of the My Music podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting down with the talented Emma Elizabeth, a musician whose creative process beautifully balances solitude and real-life experiences. This episode is a deep dive into how Emma navigates the complexities of music creation, from the quiet moments of inspiration to the vibrant energy of live performances. We kick off the episode by exploring the creative process and the delicate balance between isolation and real-life experiences in music production. Emma shares her unique perspective on how solitude fuels her creativity. She thrives in the quiet moments, away from the chaos of life, where she can truly absorb and transform her experiences into music. Yet, she acknowledges the importance of stepping back into the world to gather fresh inspiration. Emma’s creative process is spontaneous and often strikes in everyday settings. She recounts instances of jotting down lyrics in a café or recording voice notes during a walk. These in-between moments are crucial, allowing her to collect ideas that later evolve into full-fledged songs. Emma emphasizes that true creativity often defies any set formula, a sentiment that resonates deeply with our listeners. Transitioning from the studio to the stage brings its own set of challenges. Emma and I delve into the anxiety of handling complex equipment during live performances. For musicians used to simpler setups, the shift to more advanced gear can be daunting. Emma shares her personal experiences, highlighting the importance of backup plans and the raw power of stripped-back songs. In another segment, we discuss the significance of creative freedom in music-making. Emma values the process of experimenting, making mistakes, and learning through exploration rather than strictly following established rules. She admires musicians who blend complex musical knowledge with emotional depth, favoring a more intuitive and less structured approach to creating music. The evolving landscape of music discovery is a fascinating topic. Emma and I explore how platforms like Spotify, TikTok, and Instagram are changing the way we discover and engage with music. These modern channels can lead to surprising artist connections and deeper emotional investments in their music. We share personal stories of stumbling upon new songs and becoming emotionally invested in a single track before delving deeper into the artist's catalog. The conversation highlights the different layers of engagement that social media platforms offer, enhancing our appreciation of an artist’s work. We conclude with a heartfelt discussion on the intricate relationship between personal experiences and songwriting. Emma shares how intense emotions and life events fuel her creativity, making it challenging to write authentically when life is calm. We touch on the pressures of producing music without external deadlines and the importance of genuine emotional experiences in creating impactful songs. Emma reflects on how gratitude and genuine emotional expression profoundly impact songwriting. By embracing these elements, musicians can create meaningful and resonant songs that truly connect with their audience. Tune in to hear Emma's raw and unfiltered insights on her musical journey, and discover how you, too, can find harmony in your creative process.

| My Music Episode 276 - Harry Stafford and Marco Butcher | 26 Aug 2023 | 00:36:07 | |
Manchester underground music icon Harry Stafford (Inca Babies) and US-based trash blues guitarist Marco Butcher present 'The Rules of the House', the second taster of their forthcoming album 'We Are The Perilous Men', out in early September via Black Lagoon Records. Directed by Harry Stafford with camera work by Marco Butcher and Jonny Stafford, the accompanying video was filmed in Wales and North Carolina in 2023. On this track, Marco shows what a total stone rocker he is, with foot to the floor guitars and drums. Harry adds the story, which was inspired by a terse publican’s list of ruleson the specials blackboard. Harry Stafford says, "I don’t remember them all, but 'get a round in' was definitely one of them". Marco Butcher adds, "Rules of the House is a diabolical and swampy kind of song, mixing some sort of very solid groove with over-the-edge 'No Wave' type of guitars, cutting and dancing with the rhythm". This single follows the lead track 'Walk Among The Spectres', which explores our own fragile mortality, the video for which was filmed in the expansive Southern Cemetery in Didsbury South Manchester, which dates back to 1700 and was used throughout the Victorian era. Now a public park, people are invited to wander among the tombstones... to literally Walk among the Spectres. Following the resounding triumph of their 'Bone Architecture' album in 2021, the duo present the second chapter of this exploration, upholding their lockdown-inspired tradition of sending ideas back and forth between North Carolina and Manchester. Creating this album unconsciously - perhaps even telepathically - their musical connection has ignited this album with an infectious energy and spirit. Based in North Carolina, Brazil-raised trash blues guitarist Marco Butcher (Jam Messengers, Jesus and the Groupies) provides a solid backbeat, jumping with a frenetic rhythm. This foundation ranges from a mess of blues to a stumbling electro beat with Dwayne Eddie funeral guitar. His forays into dance and Hip hop see him mess with the rhythmic DNA, often inspiring the creation of a new dance shuffle at will. On August 19, 'The Rules of the House' will be available from fine music platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp. The full album 'We Are The Perilous Men' will be released on September 8 and will be available on black vinyl, as well as digitally.
| My Music Episode 275 - Kathryn Williams | 26 Aug 2023 | 00:42:06 | |
Singer, songwriter, novelist, and painter Kathryn Williams is proud to release her new album ‘Night Drives’. The collection explores a more filmic sound, with a larger ensemble of instrumentation, particular emphasis on the strings and production from Ed Harcourt. It’s out via One Little Independent Records. Journeying from leftfield contemporary pop to soft acoustics, Kathryn Williams uses her latest LP to explore a variety of fresh ideas driven, in part, by a host of collaborators. Kirsty Logan, Oystein Greni, Romeo Stodart, Matt Deighton, Simon Edwards, Yvette Williams, Neill Maccoll, Andy Bruce, Ida Wenoe, Joel Sarakula, Emily Barker and John Alder all have credits on various tracks across ‘Night Drives’. Kathryn explains “I’ve been releasing music for 24 years now. That fact blows me away, and things have changed so much over those years. The biggest change has been my love of co-writing and writing for other artists. This began when I first went on a writing retreat with Chris Difford forming close friendships and working relationships that are represented here”. Her first official album since ‘Hypoxia’ in 2015, ‘Night Drives’ opens with some of Kathryn’s most immediately electronic tracks to date, the nihilistic ‘Human’, big ballad ‘Answer In The Dark’ with all it’s bold, layered production, and the dynamic, infectious ‘Radioactive’. Elsewhere on the likes of ‘Moon Karaoke’, ‘Magnets’ and ‘The Brightest’, a more cinematic sound is explored; slowly unravelling stories backed by delicate acoustics and elated, emotive string pieces. ‘Put The Needle On The Record’ and joint closers ‘Starry Heavens’ and ‘I Am Rich In All That I’ve Lost’ are relaxed and fall into the more traditional world of folk inspired melancholia. Kathryn’s inimitable charm colours the whole album with emotion and affection – occasionally brooding, always likable. Discussing some of the themes explored she says “Some of it is questioning who we are, realising that being human is about flaws, humility, and the consequences of how we react to others. It can be about the longevity of a long-term relationship, how to keep the fire burning and to celebrate that. So many love songs are about the first moments, but this is about enduring love. The simple things that fill a day and how our dreams and wants are so separate to the daily grind. The final track is a philosophical musing on loss and gain in life. How by living a long life we will lose so much, but that in itself is riches”.

| My Music Episode 273 - I Am A Rocketship | 26 Aug 2023 | 00:37:16 | |
Atlanta indie pop duo I Am a Rocketship presents their new 'La Cruella' album, their sixth major release, comprised of ten tracks. In keeping with the band's style, while also exploring new sounds - these compositions are about uncertainty, fear and dreams. Rooted in solid melodies, here the duo mixes warm vocals, loud guitars, and cool electronic beats to explore that place where rock and trip-hop never quite met. I Am a Rocketship is made up of multi-instrumentalist Eric Weissinger and Swedish artist L E Kippner. Before meeting, Weissinger was a bassist and guitarist backing up various artists and opening for the likes of The Wedding Present, James and The Black Crowes. Upon meeting Kippner (who is a cellist, scientist, radio DJ and vocalist for Swedish synth-pop duo Neobox), the two formed Hitchcock Blondes in Ohio and then I Am a Rocketship upon relocating to Atlanta. "These songs are about uncertainty, fear and dreams. These may be the last songs we make that could be identified as "rock", as we've increasingly fallen in love with longer songs that don't really follow any real blueprint," says L E Kippner. "We tried a different way of writing songs for this album, and it turned out that every song had a story. Since our musical style has changed a bit with this album, the way that the lyrics tell those stories has changed as well. These songs don't spell out what is happening but are about feelings. We hope people will find something to recognize, maybe feel that one of the song speaks to them."

| My Music Episode 271 - Elly J Devon | 23 Aug 2023 | 00:35:07 | |
Elly draws her narratives from Devon where she lives and works. Her music is full of love, loss, our connection to each other but also to nature itself and our balance within it. She writes "I started singing when I was six years old. Being drawn to my grandmother's piano at the same time I began to write. I knew then that I was going to sing for the world. That music was my purpose and being! I became completely encapsulated into this incredible world of synergy. Sounds connecting people, words that everyone understood in their own way and a deep feeling of belonging. I attained a singing scholarship to Wells Cathedral School when I was twelve where I was classically trained. This training helped elevate my capabilities which I translate into my own style of singing. Influenced by big soul singers such as Etta, Aretha and Amy, the storytelling of Kate Bush, the truths of Bob Marley and the balls-iness of AC/DC. I've always listened to a wide variety of music that's made my story different from others. I sing of love but not typical love stories. Love of life, its inhabitants, light and darkness. I sing of loss but also what we gain and ultimately never lose. I love to make people smile and laugh, dance and cry. It's the balance of life we can't ignore. My debut EP 'Soliloquy' (released October 23rd 2021) highlighted the strength and vulnerability of humanity in its definition; life and death. But also all of the wonderful and painful things that happen in between. My track 'For Dan' from 'Soliloquy' was chosen as Upload Of The Week by BBC Introducing SW and I have had continued support from the team. I am now twenty-three and my dreams haven't changed, my songs have improved from my single digit age where this all began (I'd say) and my love of life is stronger than ever. The more I understand the complexities of life, the stronger I feel connected to music and our world. We need it and each other. I am Elly J Devon. Legitimately... check my passport." Elly joins Graham for a chat about her life in music!

AlienBlaze is a 20 year old mad as hell singer/songwriter and lead guitarist crafting genre-fluid anthems resulting in a fascinating hybrid of everything from dark alternative pop, grunge and emo, to rock and electronic elements. Her dominating presence emits an angsty appeal, encouraging a sense of self-empowerment to her young audience. In her school years, AlienBlaze spent most of her time at home through sickness, so spent hours and hours learning the electric guitar on her mum’s old guitar, wanting to play like her guitar inspirations Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains and Slash. Blaze’s sense of alienation from her peers is what inspired her to add the ‘alien’ part to her name as an artist. Covering topics such as the everyday experiences of a young adult, to more poetic themes including pathetic fallacy and imagery from nature, AlienBlaze delivers her message in a way that allows listeners from all walks of life to interpret it. Since only uploading her first song to Spotify in 2019, she has received attention from numerous Spotify editorial playlists, garnering hundreds of thousands of plays. She has also had praise from the likes of Oli Sykes (Bring Me The Horizon), Rou Reynolds (Enter Shikari), Grimes and Ellie Roswell (Wolf Alice), as well as from publications including Wonderland Magazine, NOTION and Kerrang!. #AlienBlaze #NewMusic #Interview #Conversation #Songwriting
