Jazzfest Berlin 2024 w/ Lakecia Benjamin12 Nov 202400:23:33
If there's one musician who truly embodies resilience, it's Lakecia Benjamin.

Just a couple of weeks ago, at the 60th Jazzfest Berlin, I had the privilege of sitting down with powerhouse saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin for an inspiring conversation.

Throughout her career, she's played alongside legends like Anita Baker, the Count Basie Orchestra, Harry Belafonte, Stevie Wonder, the Roots, Missy Elliott, Alicia Keys, and so many more.

After a serious car accident in 2021, Lakecia didn't just bounce back—she wrote new music that would become her latest album, Phoenix, earning three Grammy nominations. Her journey shows just how far small steps forward can go.

Lakecia opened up about her roots growing up in Washington Heights, New York, a predominantly Dominican neighbourhood pulsing with Latin music.

She shared insights into her 2020 album Pursuance: The Coltranes, her triple Grammy-nominated 2023 Phoenix, the influence of Alice and John Coltrane, and the courage it takes to reveal your authentic self to an online audience as an independent artist.

I saw Lakecia in an incredible concert at Quasimodo.

What impressed me the most was her attitude. I had to think of what Miles Davis once said: "Anybody can play. The note is only 20 percent. The attitude of the motherfucker who plays it is 80 percent." The concert wasn't just music, it was a party with all of us - we all celebrated life and women in music.

I love her story, her truth and her drive.

70s Soul Music, Gil Scott Heron & Songwriting w/ Cecily06 Nov 202400:44:37
If you’ve ever found yourself relaxing on the couch with a warm cup of tea, lost in thought about your day, Cecily’s beautiful music is exactly what you need to enhance those moments.

Cecily is an amazing vocalist and songwriter based in DC, known for her soothing and rich voice. She describes her music as a blend of soul with strong influences from jazz, 90’s R&B, and a touch of folk.

She’s shared the stage with some incredible talent, opening for award-winning artists like Gregory Porter and Jose James, as well as R&B stars like Johnny Gill, Kenny Lattimore, and Elle Varner. She’s even performed alongside folk artist Becca Stevens and alternative soul pioneer Bilal.

Just this past June, she released Awakening Pt. II, the follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2019 project Awakening Pt. I. I had the pleasure of chatting with her virtually on Zoom, and it was truly inspiring.

We explored her musical influences, reminisced about her experiences at the Umbria Jazz Festival, and discussed her connection to Gil Scott-Heron. We also delved into the messages and creative process behind Awakening Pt. II.

We wrapped up our conversation by talking about her approach to songwriting and the challenges of releasing an album independently. It was such a delightful exchange, and I really hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed our conversation! 🎧

The birth of Italy's Acid Jazz Scene w/ Nicola Conte14 Sep 202300:33:51
Nicola Conte, a talented Italian DJ, producer, guitarist, and bandleader, has gained recognition for his distinctive contributions to the acid jazz genre. Growing up in the charming city of Bari in southern Italy, he always had a deep passion for expressing himself through music.

Inspired by his journeys to London and influenced by what was happening between jazz and clubs in the UK with people like Paul Murphy and Gilles Peterson, Nicola embarked on a mission to cultivate an alternative cultural scene by putting on parties with other forward-thinking DJs and musicians within Bari.

This led him to establish the renowned Fez Club - a vibrant space where individuals could fully immerse themselves in an entirely new world inspired by London's dynamic cultural landscape. In doing so, Nicola laid the groundwork for what would become known as the Italian acid jazz movement. Through his creativity and musical prowess, Nicola has left an indelible mark on the industry while continuing to captivate audiences worldwide with his unique soundscapes.

I'm highly grateful for having the chance to sit down with Nicola, as he also shared advice on spreading culture by studying music and great insights for aspiring DJs and musicians who want to express themselves through music. Enjoy listening! 🎧

Frafra Gospel Music w/ Alogte Oho & Max Weissenfeldt11 Aug 202300:35:09
Alogte Oho is the number one Frafra gospel artist from within the vibrant music scene of Bolgatanga in Northern Ghana. Bolgatanga and its environs are the birthplace of most of the musicians in Frafra country and, thus, the cultural epicentre of northern Ghana.

At thirteen, Oho joined the church choir, deeply impressed by its energy and spirituality, and gained his first experience of professional studio recordings. In 2013, Oho met German producer Max Weissenfeldt, with whom he recorded the internationally acclaimed album 'Mam Yinne Wa'. (2013)

In today's episode, I Oho and Max Weissenweldt will take you on a journey to what Frafra Gospel really is, the story of their first meeting in Ghana, and the inspirations behind their latest works; above all, 'O Yinne!' (Album, 2023).

Having the chance to meet Oho and Max was an absolute delight. It provided a valuable opportunity to gain insight into a scene I genuinely hope will flourish and make its mark globally. Enjoy listening! 🎧

#37 A tribute to Paradise Garage w/ Michele Saunders30 Jan 202300:33:58
The Paradise Garage. One of the most important and influential clubs in New York. Michele Saunders, a Parisian native turned lifelong New Yorker, knows it well. Growing up listening to her father's records, Michele found her passion in exploring the crossroads between Jazz and Rock at least. Her lifelong passion for music took shape when she moved to America, catching the world-famous Amateur night at the Apollo Theatre in Haarlem and experiencing the legendary Paradise Garage alongside Larry Levan. In today's chat, we discussed all this, starting from her childhood, the time spent in New York City in the 70s and 80s and, of course, the legendary Paradise Garage.

#35 David Mancuso & The Loft w/ Tim Lawrence07 Nov 202201:11:31
Today, it's my birthday! For the occasion, I've decided to share a special interview with Tim Lawrence, one of the most profoundly passionate music historians of the New York Dance scene of the 70s and early 80s I have ever met. And what better day to honour the legacy of David Mancuso? Birthdays. David loved birthdays. In the children's home where he grew up, Sister Alicia used to hold birthday parties for all the kids under her care.

I've spoken about this with Tim Lawrence and the other issues related to the music at The loft, David Mancuso and the History Of New York City party culture. Tim is a Professor of Cultural Studies and Co-director of the Centre for Cultural Studies Research. He teaches music and is the author of seminal books. One above all, "Love saves the day". A brilliant documentation of the dance and disco scene in New York during the 1970s with interviews from key players in the era, such as Frankie Knuckles, Francis Grasso, Nicky Siano, etc. In today's interview, Tim passionately shared the details and his own experiences. Honestly, it was more than an interview. I wish I could spend more time listening to Tim, shedding light on the contribution of music legends and what New York in the 70s was all about.

I hope you will experience the same! ✨

"Electronic, African, Jazz. My real mission is to make an original mix of all these things." #33 Past, present and future of Jazz w/ Brazilian trio Azymuth27 Sep 202200:26:56
"Jazz is always present in our life. It's a sensation of freedom. The possibility to express yourself, mind and heart on that precise moment." Jazz has constantly been part of Azymuth's spirit. You can hear it everywhere. Furthermore, their open-minded vision of creating music back in the '60s and 70's lead them to mix Jazz with Samba and rock uniquely. Among the many songs they made, there's one in particular that I always love to listen to. It's called "Villa Mariana". I believe a perfect way to describe their timeless music. In today's interview, Azymuth talks about the past, present and future of Jazz, its musical roots and the contribution of festivals like Jazz:Re: Found to Jazz music. You will also hear some great stories from Kiko about Villa Mariana. Enjoy the chat! I know I did 😊

Earth Music, Fela Kuti & Documenting your Journey w/ Etuk Ubong20 Sep 202400:49:45
Etuk Ubong is without a doubt one of the most electrifying trumpet players in Africa.

Seun Kuti himself called him ‘one of the best things to come out of Lagos,’ and it’s easy to see why. Etuk picked up the trumpet at 14 and hasn’t looked back since.

What sets him apart is his fusion of Afrobeat, Highlife, Jazz, and the traditional drumming of the Ekombi, creating his signature sound, 'Earth Music.' It’s a captivating mix of spiritual, high-energy, and deeply moving rhythms.

I had the chance to sit down with Etuk before his set at the Dürchluften Festival 2024 and our conversation was nothing short of inspiring.

We dove into his musical influences, deep connection to Fela Kuti, jazz studies at the University of Cape Town, and how he crafted his unique genre: Earth Music.

We also touched on the importance of documenting your journey online, and Etuk had some incredible insights to share on that. Chatting with him was a spiritual experience, and I hope you'll feel the same listening to the episode. 🎧

#32 Jazz:Re:Found Festival w/Denis Longhi19 Jul 202200:41:39
"My parents bought me this album called JAZZMATAZZ by Guru. It was surprising to me listening to a new concept of Jazz blended with Hip-Hop. From an early stage, I was lucky enough to be able to discover a beautiful world." Denis was 14, and that album completely changed his view and approach to music. Most importantly, it was the first piece of the puzzle to discover different sounds, from house music with Nuyorican Soul to Acid Jazz with Jamiroquai and Incognito. His trips to London in the late 90s - enjoying the legendary Bar Rumba club nights founded by Gilles Peterson - and the first festival experience at Big Chill- led him to create Jazz:Re:Found. Certainly, one of the best Boutique Jazz Festivals in Italy, with great attention to the new wave of UK jazz. In today's interview, Denis talks about his musical background, the route into the festival industry, and what to expect from the fourteenth edition of Jazz:Re:Found. Listen in to get inspired!

A new journey | Disco, Funk & Jazz Music Culture18 Jul 202200:05:26
Hey music lover! Maikol here 👋 It's finally time to share with you a new chapter. If you noticed, I changed the podcast cover - Disco, Funk, and Jazz music culture. Well, everything that is my passion for music boils down to those genres. My involvement in music has primarily been inspired by my family & my home town. I grew up listening to the sound of Hector Lavoe, thanks to my mother, who had the patience to inject me with her love for "El Rey De La Salsa". When I was a teen, I loved buying CDs in specialized stores, and one of them shaped my musical taste: a compilation of disco, funk and soul (by @djtommyvee ). So initially leaned in that direction, discovering more about the history and its influence. I got deep into it with the help of my best mate, who took me to record shops. My life experiences did the rest. The most important were the weekends at the Moxa Club listening to legends and the meeting with Jean-Paul Maunick. (my first time at Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club in London). So, I'm here to tell you about a new exciting mission. Helping you discover the power of African American Music. Ready for this new chapter together?

Brazil, Political Music and Sharing Powerful Messages w/ Bia Ferreira13 Aug 202400:52:50

Bia Ferreira, a Brazilian singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, stands out for her innovative approach to combining Afrodiasporic rhythms – like soul, R&B, reggae and rap – with Brazilian music – such as samba and repente.

She is known for her straightforward lyrics addressing important topics like necropolitics, racial quotas, anti-racism, women's rights, LGBTQIAP+ rights, and affection.

She's been also one of the strongest "voices" against Jair Bolsonaro inside and outside Brazil. Her shows are full of music, love and speeches.

I catch up with Bia before her show at Dürchluften Festival 2024.

In our conversation, we talked about her musical influences, why she focuses on making political music, her debut album Igreja Lesbiteriana, Um Chamado, and all things sharing powerful messages through music.

Absolutely a spiritual time chatting with her!

I hope you will enjoy the experience. 🎧

Navigating the Cultural History of Jazz + Getting Booked at Festivals w/ Natalie Greffel06 Aug 202401:33:02
Natalie Greffel is a versatile Mozambican-Danish singer, bassist, composer, and passionate advocate for the arts.

In addition to his work as a musician, she serves as a curator for XJAZZ! FESTIVAL, curating an eclectic lineup of performances, workshops, and special events showcasing contemporary jazz while honouring its rich cultural heritage.

In our conversation, we talked about her multicultural background influencing her musical journey, the music and the politics and the culture behind Jazz addressing social and political issues and her role at XJAZZ! sharing useful advice and personal reflections about getting booked at Festivals.

Getting the chance to meet Natalie was a fantastic opportunity for me to delve into the importance of understanding more about the true nature of jazz. Specifically, I learned about its African roots that continue to shape its music in the present day.

Natalie, being a passionate individual dedicated to promoting cultural exchange, shared her passion for all things Jazz music with great enthusiasm.

I hope you will enjoy it the same way I did! 🎧
