Eazy-E: “What Really Happened?” | MURDERISH Ep. 17207 Oct 202401:06:15
In the Winter of 1995, the former leader of hip hop’s most notorious group, N.W.A., lay bed-ridden, pale, and connected to all manner of life-saving devices and fighting for every breath. At the time, Eazy was on top of his game when, seemingly out of nowhere, the iconic rapper developed a cough. At first, Eazy was diagnosed with bronchitis-related asthma and sent home three days after seeking medical care. The prescribed drugs didn’t help. On February 24th, he was admitted to Cedars-Sinai to undergo extensive testing. The lab results shocked everyone, from fans to foes. Eric Wright was dying of AIDS. Within a month, the music mogul and rap pioneer would be dead. Only, the story doesn’t end there. As we approach 30 years since the death of Eazy-E, questions remain. How did he contract AIDS? Why did he perish so quickly from a condition known to result in a slow demise? Could foul play have been involved? And what’s the story behind his death-bed wedding to girlfriend Tomica Woods, and his much debated last will and testament? John O’Keefe Part 2: “Karen Read Goes on Trial” | MURDERISH Ep. 16812 Aug 202401:14:28
The high-profile trial of Massachusetts finance professor Karen Read ended without resolution last month. In the year’s most closely watched legal proceedings, the jury, composed of six men and six women, failed to agree on whether Read was guilty of murdering her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, or on the two other charges against her. O’Keefe, 46, was found battered, freezing and unconscious outside a Canton, Massachusetts home on the morning of January 29th, 2022, and later pronounced dead at the hospital. At trial, the commonwealth argued Karen, drunk and upset, struck John with her SUV and abandoned him in a snowstorm. Karen’s defense maintained her innocence, alleging that John was killed by fellow law enforcement officers during a house party and that Karen Read was framed by those officers. The live-streamed trial was a rollercoaster with all the drama of a Hollywood script: a police cover-up, misconduct, misogynistic and highly unprofessional text messages from the lead detective, a potential love triangle, lies, and betrayal. Millions were glued to the story, especially in New England, where papers referred to it as “Boston’s trial of the century.” What happens next is anyone’s guess as the story is far from over. Best of MURDERISH - E118 Daisy De La O: “TikTok Justice” 15 May 202300:38:15
When Daisy De La O was fatally stabbed in her own community, her friends and family quickly honed in on a fairly obvious suspect. Her case, however, garnered no leads or public attention ..until it was posted on TikTok. It was then that true crime social media jumped in to help. Thanks to the activity on social media about Daisy’s case, a suspect would eventually be identified but not before he slipped out of the area undetected. It has been said that social media can cause more harm than good for serious crime cases, but in Daisy’s case the posts on social media propelled it to a much larger audience and ultimately led to an arrest. Ana Walshe: “Google Speaks” | MURDERISH Ep. 13508 May 202300:35:53
When Serbian immigrant Ana Walshe visited her native country back in December 2022, no one in her family thought it would be the last time they’d ever see her. Just a few days into 2023, however, Massachusetts investigators scrambled for answers when Ana was reported missing. She had a beautiful family, a promising real estate career, and enough income to rent two lavish homes. Was Ana inclined to start over somewhere else? Or did something ominous happen to make her vanish? Investigators soon found damning evidence, including grisly Google searches. Later this year, Ana Walshe’s family may get the answers they deserve as the man suspected of murdering her is expected to go on trial.  Follow Jami and MURDERISH on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir.  Sponsors Hatch: Visit Hatch.co/murderish for up to 15% off of a Hatch Rest plus free shipping.  ZocDoc: Visit ZocDoc.com/MURDERISH to download the app and book a top-rated doctor today. Best of MURDERISH - E115 Michael Redlick: “A Controversial Marriage” 01 May 202300:43:32
Danielle Drohan was in her early twenties when she married a man more than 20 years older. The age gap wasn't the unusual part, though. Her husband, Michael Redlick, had previously been her stepfather. Against all odds, their controversial and rocky marriage lasted nearly two decades. It would all come to a grinding halt on January 11, 2019. That night, after a vicious argument, Michael was found dead in their million-dollar riverfront home. Was this deadly event the culmination of years of abuse? Or did something more sinister play a role in Michael’s death? When a verdict was handed down, people on both sides of the tragedy were left in shock. Let’s get social: Follow MURDERISH on Instagram & TikTok @MurderishPodcast. We’re also on Facebook. Stephen Smith: “Unsolved Murdaugh Mystery” | MURDERISH Ep. 13424 Apr 202300:52:58
Just after 4 AM on July 8, 2015, a call came into Hampton County emergency dispatch. A driver spotted a body in the center of a remote stretch of highway known as Sandy Run Road. The body belonged to 19-year-old Stephen Smith, a nursing student at nearby Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College. There was nothing to suggest a vehicle had been involved in Stephen’s death, yet a hit and run would become the sheriff’s department’s official determination. The story didn’t sit well with Stephen’s friends, his family, or the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The circumstances begged several questions: Why would Hampton County make such a rush to judgment regarding the cause of death? Who were they trying to protect? And who was responsible for killing Stephen Smith? It would take eight years, and the widely publicized capital murder trial of Alex Murdaugh, for South Carolina authorities to admit that what happened that night in Lowcountry was no traffic accident, it was a homicide that many believe could be tied to the Murdaughs, Hampton County’s Royal Family.   Follow Jami and MURDERISH on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir.  Sponsors Earth Breeze: Visit EarthBreeze.com/MURDERISH to subscribe and save 40%. Best of MURDERISH - E104 Vincent Chin: “Modern Day Lynching” 17 Apr 202300:55:22
Since the 1880s, immigrants from all over the globe have arrived in the United States hoping to attain a better quality of life, the American Dream. Like so many immigrants before them, Lily and Ben Chin wanted their son Vincent to have more opportunities than he may have had in their native China. In the 1970s and 1980s, however, tensions were high between Japanese and American automobile manufacturers, and that discord extended beyond the auto manufacturing plants. It was at this time that 27-year-old Vincent Chin found himself in peril on the streets of Motor City. His story reminds us why this landmark case is still relevant more than 40 years later. Christa Worthington: “Personal Life on Trial” | MURDERISH Ep. 133 10 Apr 202301:15:02
While in her 20s and 30s, Cape Cod native Christa Worthington built a successful career in fashion journalism. She rubbed elbows with elite designers, wrote editorials for widely-respected publications like Cosmopolitan, and cycled through high fashion cities like Paris and London. Still, she felt a profound absence in her life that couldn’t be satisfied by any career advancement. As she turned 40, Christa realized she wanted to be a mother. When her daughter Ava was born, it was as amazing as she envisioned. In a cruel twist of fate, Christa’s joy was abruptly cut short. The events that unfolded on January 4th, 2002 would rip away the life she had carefully contrived, leaving behind a trail of utter devastation. This case brings up questions that aren’t easily answered and almost 20 years later, it’s still difficult to determine the truth.    Follow Jami and MURDERISH on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir.  Sponsors ZocDoc: Visit ZocDoc.com/MURDERISH to download the app and book a top-rated doctor today. Best of MURDERISH - E107 "Nicole Montalvo: Like Father, Like Son”03 Apr 202300:55:02
When feelings for another person run deep, people are often inclined to see the best in that person. It’s not uncommon for unsettling behavior to be excused rather than seeing it as a warning sign and acting on it. But this idealism can put someone in harm’s way without them realizing it until it’s much too late. When Nicole Montalvo went missing in October 2019, investigators quickly learned that a lot was going on in her personal life and sadly, her circumstances were not all that unusual. Nicole’s disturbing murder led to three arrests and one trial. Let’s get social: Follow MURDERISH on Instagram & TikTok @MurderishPodcast. We’re also on Facebook. Chuck E. Cheese Massacre | MURDERISH Ep. 13227 Mar 202300:56:26
It was a Tuesday night at the Chuck E. Cheese in Aurora, Colorado when Margaret Kohlberg, 50, Sylvia Crowell, 19, Ben Grant, 17, Colleen O’Connor, also 17, and 20-year-old Bobby Stephens were working the late shift. They didn’t know it, but a man with a gun was hiding in the bathroom. When the mass shooting was over, four people lay dead and a fifth badly wounded. The shooter’s total haul was less than $1,600 and the entire manic episode lasted less than five minutes. Most shocking . . . the mass murderer was only 19 years old. On the morning of May 26, 1990, Marlene Warren was finishing breakfast with her son and his friends when she heard a knock on their front door. The 40-year-old mother of two wasn’t expecting anyone but answered the door anyway. She was greeted by someone wearing a clown costume and white face paint, clutching a flower arrangement and foil balloons. Marlene was delighted at the cheerful sight. Then, suddenly, everything changed. Moments later the clown pulled out a gun, aimed it at her face, and pulled the trigger. The bizarre attack left the community puzzled and horrified, at a time when authorities were ill-equipped to find answers. Let’s get social: Follow MURDERISH on Instagram & TikTok @MurderishPodcast. Anne Marie Fahey: “Perilous Privilege” | MURDERISH Ep. 12830 Jan 202300:58:44
How far does family loyalty go? Most of us would do anything to protect the ones we love. But where do we draw the line? Keeping dark secrets is one thing; helping to cover up a serious crime is an entirely different thing. In late June of 1996, Delaware politician Thomas Capano put his youngest brother Gerard in an impossible position. The married father of four stood to lose everything if his affair with the governor’s secretary came to light. Tom decided the only remedy was murder. But he desperately needed Gerard’s help to pull it off. After going to dinner with her secret lover on the evening of June 27, 1996, 30-year-old Anne Marie Fahey would never be seen again. Family members and the public were shocked and horrified to learn the grim details of her tragic death. Robert Sorrells: “From the Big Screen to the Big House” | MURDERISH Ep. 12716 Jan 202300:39:54
A character actor who appeared in over 100 films and TV shows between the early 60s and late 80s, Robert Sorrells made a living playing bit parts in big productions: classics like Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Twilight Zone. No matter the plot, the roles typically ended the same for Sorrells―with his character either firing a bullet, or taking one himself. His early filmography reads like an advertisement for the NRA: Gunfight in Abilene, Mosby’s Marauders, Death of a Gunfighter, The Ride to Hangman’s Tree. In a disturbing case of life imitating art, Sorrells, at the age of 74, gunned down two men at a bar near his home in Simi Valley, California, killing one and badly wounding the other. His victim: A 45-year-old painting contractor and father of one. The shocking July 2004 murder shined a spotlight on the psychology of aging actors, and begged the question: did a lifetime of being around fake movie violence make Sorrells more inclined to commit the real-life kind? Or, were the characters he portrayed all those years on film closer to reality than those around him realized?   Become a MURDERISH | Behind the Mic member and get access to bonus episodes, ad-free episodes and many other exclusive perks. Jesse McBane & Patricia Mann: “Valentine’s Day Murders” | MURDERISH Ep. 16729 Jul 202400:59:13
On February 12, 1971 19-year-old Jesse McBane headed out to surprise his fiance, 20-year-old Patricia Mann. He was taking her to a Valentine’s Dance in Durham, North Carolina. The two lovebirds had to be back at Patricia's dormitory by 1:00 AM curfew. Only …she never returned. Durham police officers found Jesse’s Ford Cortina the next evening parked in a cul-de-sac. 12 days later, a land surveyor came upon what he thought was a mannequin’s leg sticking out from a pile of leaves. When he poked the extremity with a stick …he saw skin move. It was the missing students. Details from the crime scene suggested the couple had been tortured and murdered by hanging. Word of the heinous crime shocked the Tarheel State. The next day’s page 1 headline in the Durham Sun read: ‘Strangulation by Rope Killed Couple.” Over 50 years later, the double homicide remains North Carolina’s most notorious unsolved murder. Tough, the case isn’t without suspects.  Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir and join the Serial Streamers true crime TV club! Best of MURDERISH - "Gabriel Fernandez" E2609 Jan 202301:30:46
We're bringing back a very important episode about first grader Gabriel Fernandez. His mother, Pearl Fernandez, was an unfit parent, completely detached from her children …especially Gabriel. Plain and simple, she despised her young son and put him through years of neglect and abuse. Pearl’s boyfriend took part in the abuse …until it escalated to a point at which young Gabriel’s body had sustained all it could take. There were multiple cries for help, multiple red flags and blatant signs, and multiple reports of abuse. Still, young Gabriel lost his life at the hands of people who should have loved and protected him. Gabriel was murdered, and it could have been prevented. This is part of Gabriel’s story. Gerry Boggs: “Black Widow Bride” | MURDERISH Ep. 12605 Jan 202300:51:40
Some might say New Orleans native Jill Coit collected husbands as a hobby. Between 1961 and 1992, she was married 11 times to 9 different men. Some of these marriages were acts of bigamy - Jill married a handful of men while she was still legally wed to others. On the outside, it could appear that she was obsessed with companionship. But a deeper look at Jill’s life revealed a twisted, manipulative side - not a woman intent on finding true love. Her tendency to swap out husbands like designer shoes would lead one man to his death. 52-year-old Gerry Boggs was a lifelong bachelor until he fell into Jill’s trap. Soon people would learn about the tangled web Jill spun as a serial bigamist turned murderess, and how she earned the ominous nickname ‘Colorado’s Black Widow’.   Become a MURDERISH | Behind the Mic member and get access to bonus episodes, ad-free episodes and many other exclusive perks. We’re bringing back a very special episode featuring none other than True Crime Legend, Josh Mankiewicz of Dateline NBC. My good friend, Kari Martin of White Wine True Crime podcast, and I got together with Manks and recorded this episode. We talked about murder, relationships, Dateline episodes, Scott Peterson, childhood …and Eminem even came up during our convo. At the end of the episode, you’re going to hear a little ditty that Kari and I wrote and performed for Josh. Once this episode airs, any dignity and self-respect Kari and I had will have been flushed down the toilet. Dr. Thomas Burchard: “Killing Kindness” | MURDERISH Ep. 12519 Dec 202200:41:13
Kelsey Turner was the kind of woman who drew people in without trying. Her bleach-blonde hair and hourglass figure made her a natural model. In a sea of beautiful California women, though, modeling gigs weren’t plentiful enough to support her expensive tastes. Like many young women nowadays, she turned to online sites to sell amateur photos.  By doing so, Kelsey caught the attention of many admirers. Among them was prominent psychiatrist Dr. Thomas Burchard. Despite pushing 70, he was infatuated with 25-year-old Kelsey and offered her ample financial perks to keep her happy.  But the doctor’s attraction for Kelsey began to seriously cloud his judgment. It turned out his giving, sympathetic nature only made him more vulnerable to dangerous predators. Ultimately, that vulnerability led to the doctor’s demise.   Become a MURDERISH | Behind the Mic member and get access to bonus episodes, ad-free episodes and many other exclusive perks. Trevor Bartlett: “Suicide by friend, or Murder?” | MURDERISH Ep. 12321 Nov 202200:48:08
What would you be willing to do for your best friend? Tell a lie? Keep their darkest secret? Commit a crime? What if your best friend asked you to take their life? What would you do then?   Trevor Bartlett and Mario Mills were best friends. On cold Wyoming nights, the pair would escape to Mills’ garage to drink, smoke and play cards until they could barely stand. Most times, the worst damage was some vomit and a splitting hangover. But on the evening of March 25, 2020, the result was far different. An early morning 911 call drew police to the nondescript home in a quiet residential neighborhood. Inside the garage cops found 37-year-old Trevor Bartlett, a loving father and loyal friend, shot through the head, dead on the cold concrete floor.   Was it a suicide? Murder? Jessica McCormack: “#JusticeForJessica” | MURDERISH Ep. 12207 Nov 202200:50:41
When a 25 year old Jessica McCormack and her three young daughters disappeared suddenly in July of 2019, Jessica’s closest friends thought she was taking time away to decompress. They had conversations with her on Facebook while she was gone, but it soon became clear that the person on Facebook was just an imposter who’d hacked into Jessica’s account. Several weeks later, Jessica’s body was found on a highway in the Ozarks after apparently falling out of a suitcase that she’d been stuffed into. The shocking discovery prompted a search for Jessica’s three daughters. This would mark the beginning of an ongoing fight to find answers: who killed Jessica McCormack?   To report information regarding the murder of Jessica McCormack, please contact the McDonald County Sheriff’s Office at (417) 223-4319, or try calling the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI. Kelsey Smith: “Keep Marching On" | MURDERISH Ep. 12124 Oct 202200:42:04
When heading out to run errands, you fully expect to make it home safely. In June of 2007, 18-year-old Kelsey Smith went to the store, but she never made it home. No one could’ve predicted that less than two weeks after high school graduation, Kelsey’s life would come to a violent end. Outside a Target store less than 10 minutes from her childhood home, Kelsey was forced into her car and abducted. As Johnson County detectives frantically searched for the missing teen, the community struggled to understand how something like this could’ve happened in broad daylight.   The Kelsey Smith Foundation: KelseysArmy.org   Become a MURDERISH | Behind the Mic member. Margo McKee: “Deadly Love at First Sight” | MURDERISH Ep. 12010 Oct 202200:41:41
Entering the spring of 1986, Margo McKee’s story could’ve been ripped from a Hallmark movie. Despite losing her mother and father to cancer when she was 12, she’d blossomed into a straight-A student who attended church and volunteered around town. Her foster parents, Ross and Wyona Sterling, were satisfied they’d delivered on the promise they made to Margo’s dying parents five years earlier ..that they would raise the brown-eyed girl as their own. But by summer’s end, Margo would be dead ..her beaten and battered body buried in a shallow grave beneath a foot of sand, driftwood and dirt. Gone, too, was the baby inside her womb. Joe Gatto: “Cold Case in the City of Angels” | MURDERISH Ep. 11928 Sep 202200:35:34
November 12, 2013 probably started out like any other for 78-year-old Joe Gatto, who lived in a modest home in Silver Lake, California. Although Joe was retired, he was far from inactive. The energetic and talented man created artwork, jewelry and tended to his garden among other hobbies. By the evening, a day that began typically would end tragically ..with a single gunshot. Almost a decade later, loved ones still do not have answers and his murder investigation has gone cold.   Become a MURDERISH | Behind the Mic member. Daisy De La O: “TikTok Justice” | MURDERISH Ep. 11812 Sep 202200:41:48
The McStay Family: “Buried Truths”丨MURDERISH Ep. 11729 Aug 202201:00:45
Losing a loved one to a violent crime creates a sense of loss few of us can fathom. But what if the investigation involves an entire family that simply vanishes? Could the truth become so muddled that an innocent man is pegged as their killer? When Joseph and Summer McStay, along with their two toddlers, went missing from their California home in February of 2010 no one knew what to think. Several aspects of the preceding investigation left behind a great deal of unanswered questions.   Become a MURDERISH | Behind the Mic member. Jimmy Farris: “Murder in Suburbia” | MURDERISH Ep. 116 15 Aug 202200:49:53
The suburbs have been labeled the most visible manifestation of the American dream. It’s in these clean-cut bedroom communities where countless families seek refuge from the frantic hustle and bustle of city life and the crime that comes with it. But parents who flee to the suburbs trying to insulate their children from the scourge of drugs and violence frequently discover a hard truth: that crime, even murder, can take root anywhere, no matter the zip code or median income. James and Judie Farris learned this lesson in the most horrific way possible. Jimmy Farris Jr. was supposed to end up a soldier, a firefighter, or a cop like his dad. Instead, on the evening of May 22, 1995, he was pronounced dead at the age of 16, the victim of two stab wounds suffered during a 10-second brawl over marijuana. Jimmy Farris’ tragic death astonished the small California community where he lived, shattering its veneer of safety and innocence. But what happened next, many would argue, was far more shocking. Michael Redlick: “A Controversial Marriage” | MURDERISH Ep. 11501 Aug 202200:47:50
Check us out: Visit Murderish.com for more info about the show and Creator/Host, Jami. INTRODUCING: Dirty Money Moves: Women in White Collar Crime | Full length episode 25 Jul 202200:53:38
Dirty Money Moves: Women in White Collar Crime deep dives into cases involving a more rare type of criminal, women who commit financial crimes and scams. In season one, host Jami Rice of MURDERISH podcast takes listeners on a journey to investigate Mary Carole McDonnell, a self-proclaimed heiress and the CEO of a TV production company based in Los Angeles. Jami met Mary Carole McDonnell in 2018 when the phony heiress hand-delivered pies to staff at the bank she was about to scam out of $15 million dollars. After she got her hands on the bank’s money, Mary Carole disappeared and still has not surfaced more than four years later. In season one of Dirty Money Moves we expose the REAL Mary Carole McDonnell, her multi-million dollar scams, and all of the lies she told for decades, including a sensationalized tale about the kidnap for ransom murder plot involving her little sister. We unravel how Mary Carole managed to hustle numerous intelligent people and sophisticated businesses out of roughly $50 million dollars, and whether the female hustler had help along the way. This is a puzzling and complex tale about greed, deceit, shocking truths, and an unlikely perpetrator whose story is interwoven with Hollywood’s darker side. apple.co/dirtymoney Learn more about your ad choices. Michael Donald: “A Mother’s Fight to Take Down the KKK” | MURDERISH Ep. 11418 Jul 202200:48:29
In March of 1981, Michael Donald became the latest victim in America’s history of racial violence. The young Black man was beaten, killed, and lynched by two members of the local Ku Klux Klan in his hometown of Mobile, Alabama, for nothing more than crossing their path. The resulting murder investigation triggered his mother, Beulah Mae Donald, to sue the state Klan into oblivion. A small comfort for the victim of America’s last recorded lynching and his family. Alexander Urtula: “The Power of Words” | MURDERISH Ep. 11304 Jul 202200:49:13
In 2015, 17-year-old Michelle Carter was indicted on charges connected to the suicide of her 18-year-old boyfriend, Conrad Roy Jr III. In a controversial 2017 trial, a Taunton, Massachusetts jury found her guilty of involuntary manslaughter. A similar case occurred in May 2019, though it received much less publicity. Boston College students Inyoung You and her boyfriend Alexander Urtula had been dating for 18 months when he died by suicide. An investigation would uncover an abundance of abusive text messages from Inyoung in the months leading up to Alexander’s death. The Carter and You cases involved problematic text messages that many argue are what drove both victims in these cases to end their lives. But where does free will end and the power of suggestion take over? Is it possible to brainwash someone into ending their own life? Let’s see if we get any closer to answers as we explore Alexander Urtula’s case in this episode of MURDERISH. Check us out: Visit Murderish.com for more info about the show and Creator/Host, Jami. When this man suddenly couldn’t be located, his family wondered where he had gone. Did he use his lottery winnings to go on a much-needed vacation, exhausted from all the people asking for money? At 61 years old, Wendy DiRodio’s life was just getting started. An accomplished author, therapist and dance instructor, she was ready to excel in the only part of life where success had escaped her: love. She’d begun dating a handsome younger man; there was even talk of marriage. She was closing escrow on a home near the beach outside of Santa Barbara, California. Wendy loved people―and they loved her back. So when Wendy was stabbed to death in 2009, the community was shocked and confused. Little did they know the killer stood among them. The killer’s motive? Lester Bower Jr: “Controversial Execution”丨MURDERISH Ep. 11106 Jun 202200:52:51
The American Justice System was created, in part, to ensure that all Americans get fair and impartial administration of justice. But, the system is by no means perfect and sometimes the wrong person is convicted of a serious crime. But what happens when a person is sentenced to death and years later, new evidence is brought to light that casts doubt on their guilt? Lester Bower Jr. maintained his innocence for decades and then, new witnesses came forward and backed up Bower’s claim of innocence. Would this be enough to save him from being executed? Jill & Kirstie Foster: Familicide丨MURDERISH Ep. 11023 May 202201:03:01
When a family’s financial situation drastically improves, temptation can lurk around every corner. And sometimes, outward appearances completely obscure a less glamorous reality. Chris Foster of Lancashire, England had known a working-class lifestyle for most of his adulthood. In 1997, though, fortune suddenly smiled upon him. At 39 years old, following a monumental tragedy, Foster invented and patented a product that would revolutionize the global oil and gas industries. In a darkly ironic twist, oil would play a major role in the unthinkable crimes he committed in 2008. His crimes shocked all of Britain and made headlines, as far as Australia, for years to come.
