| 250. The Wizard of Oz with special guest H. Alan Scott aka Sadie Pines | 30 Aug 2024 | 01:37:03 | |
"Oh, what a world! What a world! Who would have thought a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness?" We made it to 250 episodes and what an opportunity to bring you the end all be all of a literal Movie That Made Us Gay! We welcome back the hilarious H. Alan Scott to review this cinema classic starring Judy Garland and Margaret Hamilton as two of the most iconic characters of the silver screen. This movie is woven into the fabric of our culture - from casual recognition even if you've never seen it (how?) right down to the commemorative plate collecting, memorabilia fanatics. We talk about the inherent queerness of this movie, its enduring legacy in our community and we even squeeze in an FMK with the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion. Do we identify more and more with the Wicked Witch of the West as we inch toward Elder Gay status? Absolutely. We never thought of ourselves as die-hard Wizard of Oz gays but it turns out our commorative 3D Bluray and waaay to many pics from the Motion Picture Academy Museum exhibit might say otherwise. | 249. The Last Unicorn directed by Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr. | 23 Aug 2024 | 01:41:39
"Mare? MARE? I? A HORSE? Is THAT what you take me for? Is THAT what you see?" We watched "The Last Unicorn" all by our lonesome and we're still recovering from our 1980's dark fantasy streak. What was it about the energy of 1980's kids movies that just fascinated us at the same time as scare the living dickens out of us? This movie is filled with spooky imagery, dark themes and can be downright scary but like a ton of similar '80s kids movies - we just love it! Mia Farrow as the Unicorn and the Lady Amalthea gives an ethereal performance filled with sorrow and melancholy - you know, kids stuff. The beautiful character design and water color backgrounds reel us in, but creepy characters like Mommy Fortuna (voiced by the ICON Angela Lansbury) and the unforgettable harpy give us the creeps to this day. When the Red Bull attacks we're still on the edge of our seats. We discuss the lore of unicorns, and the reboots that haven't manage to materialize. We were My Little Pony boys for sure, so The Last Unicorn was practically made for us, but the fantastic and spooky imagery combined with the hippy-dippy soundtrack makes for classic '80s kids movies. | 241. Mrs. Doubtfire with special guest Joshua Clement | 21 Jun 2024 | 01:39:39
"Oh... as I hold this cold meat, I'm reminded of Winston. God rest his soul." We watched "Mrs. Doubtfire" (1993) with MTMUG All Star Joshua Clement and we don't do laundry, we don't do windows and we DON'T do diapers. Listen, it's been 30 years since this family comedy was released and our ideas about gender identity and expression have come a long way. That being said, we firmly believe Robin Williams did not have a malicious bone in his body or thought in his heart when he committed Euphegenia Doubtfire to film. The queer sensibilities are rife throughout Daniel Hillard's (Williams) journey to become the matronly Mrs. Doubtfire in order to spend more time with his kids. From his gay brother Frank, played by icon Harvey Fierstein, to Robin's manic (and still hilarious) performance channeling Mrs. Doubtfire. As time goes by, we are finding ourselves understanding Miranda (Sally Field) a bit more - that pony was INSIDE the house! Don't get us started on Pierce Brosnan serving up body in the pool scene - we'll be rewinding that one, thank you very much. We also love (and grew up with) the Hillard children played by Lisa Jakub, Matthew Lawrence and little bitty Mara Wilson. This cast is perfect, the jokes still hold up and Robin, as always, serves up a master class in comedy. | 157. Who Framed Roger Rabbit with special guest Dax Exclamationpoint | 29 Jul 2022 | 01:24:41
"I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way." We watch Who Framed Roger Rabbit with the Queen of all nerds herself, Dax Exclamationpoint and things are about to get real nerdy up in here. This movie was the original Multiverse of Madness for kids in the '80s and '90s. We collectively lost our tiny minds when we saw the titans of Disney and Warner Brothers together on screen for the first time! Jessica Rabbit, voiced to perfection by the amazing Kathleen Turner, may have been a sexual awakening for a generation of straight boys - but for the gays she was a revalation. She introduced gay kids across the land to Glamour with a capital G and we've been chasing that glittery high ever since. Joanna Cassidy ("I'm right on top of that Rose") is doing the lords work delivering the silliest of lines with deadpan drama and looking like a million bucks in these '40s fashions. This movie also collectively traumatized a generation of kids with it's batsh*t villain Judge Doom, played to chilling perfection by Christopher Lloyd. If you're into voluptuous cartoon babes, onscreen murder of cute cartoon characters and plenty of sexual innuendo this is the kids movie for you! | 156. Commando with special guests Ben Cheaves and Millie De Chirico | 22 Jul 2022 | 01:35:06
Let's Party! We watched one of the gayest action movies to come out of the 1980s Commando with our TCM friends Ben Cheaves and Millie De Chirico. Y'all this movie is insane, and doesn't get nearly enough credit for making Arnold Schwarzenegger the movie star he is today. Arnold plays an ex-special ops soldier living in the woods with his daughter played by Samantha from Who's the Boss, Alyssa Milano. When his daughter is kidnapped by an evil dictator played by Dan Hedaya he must use his Captain America strength to hunt down the men responsible. We discuss if this movie is actually a love story between Arnold and the International Male clad Vernon Wells from Mad Max 2, its smart talking sidekick played with perfect comic timing by Rae Dawn Chong, and if Arnold in that black swim brief leave us feeling a certain way?

| 155. The Royal Tenenbaums with special guest Donovan Marcotte | 15 Jul 2022 | 01:30:13 | |
"I always wanted to be a Tenenbaum, you know?" We watched The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) with our friend Donovan Marcotte and we're all of us especially *not* a genius. This "quirky" family dramedy is peak Wes Anderson and quote possibly his best film. Fight us. We all laugh a little too nervously as Gene Hackman's Royal Tenenbaum eviscerates with words everyone in his path - even his children and ex wife (too real?). Are every hipster couple in their Margot and Richie Halloween costumes missing the point of the movie completely? Maybe. Either way we still wish were an inkling as cool as Margot, as smart as Chas and as sensitive as Richie. But at the end of the day maybe we're all just Eli Cash watching from the window across the street. | 154. Terms of Endearment with special guest Darren Stein | 08 Jul 2022 | 01:41:04
"Give my daughter the shot!" We watched the James L. Brooks movie Terms of Endearment with the writer/director of Jawbreaker Darren Stein, and we are here to remind you that it's one of the best films to come out of the 1980s. This movie's biggest fans are in the gay community, and can anyone read a queen to filth like Aurora Greenway? "You are not special enough to overcome a bad marriage." And nobody would have played her better than the cinematic treasure that is Shirley MacLaine, and she has the Oscar to prove it. We talk about the "turbulent brilliance" of Debra Winger. The most Jack role Jack Nicholson has ever played. The Patrick Nagel come to life Patsy played by Lisa Hart Carroll, and stealth hottie Jeff Daniels. Come to laugh, come to cry, come to care, come to terms! | 153. Mulholland Drive with special guest Zoë Secret | 01 Jul 2022 | 01:32:33
Silencio! We watched Mulholland Drive (2001) with our friend Zoë Secrest and we're still pretty confused. This Hollywood dreamscape from director David Lynch has everything - parking lot hags, amnesiacs in shake-and-go wigs, and Justin Theroux in tinted glasses. We discuss "the secret of Mulholland Drive" and attempt to dissect the mystery behind this puzzlebox of a film. Spoiler alert - we still probably haven't solved it. Do you have to watch the movie before you enjoy this episode - we won't hold it against you, but don't hold our cuckoo theories as cold hard facts. That's what IMDB trivia is for. | 152. In & Out with special guest Chris Gallo | 24 Jun 2022 | 01:38:41
"Does anybody here know how many times I had to watch 'Funny Lady'?" We watched In & Out (1997) with our friend Chris (@golden_girls_posters) and Hot damn, what a faboulous window treatment... wait that was a trick! We still have questions about the premise, but you can't beat this cast with a stick. Kevin Kline nails it as an in the closet (?) high school teacher who gets outed by a famous former student. Somehow his mincing and general gayness isnt quite as offensive as a certain soon-to-be-former talk show host and we were still loling at the physical humor. Joan Cusack once again steals every scene she's in and absolutely deserves her Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. I still think Debbie Reynolds dressed as Thelma Harper is a hate crime especially in a movie as gay as this but it was 1997. Times and attitudes have changed but thanks to some knock out comedic performances this movie doesn't need to get cancelled... yet. | 151. Nowhere with special guest Seth Shubin | 17 Jun 2022 | 01:30:37
"L.A is like… nowhere. Everyone who lives here is lost." We put some gas in the VCR this week to talk about the Gregg Araki film Nowhere with guest Seth Shubin @jerkofalltrades. Described in the marketing as "90210 was on Acid" this cast is a who's who of up and coming Hollywood. With early appearances by Ryan Phillippe, Heather Graham, Scott Caan, Mena Suvari, Denise Richards, as well as Araki staple James Duval, Nowhere is one of the hidden gems of the 90s. We talk about the once again genius castings of his films (Christina Applegate, Guillermo Diaz, Kathleen Robertson), the more insane celebrity cameos, and terrific soundtrack that's still a staple of our car CD player. Get your date to Jujyfrui's party, (I thought YOU were going with Tomas?), and take the ride with us to Araki's teenage apocalypse. | 150. The Doom Generation with special guest Rudy Bleu | 10 Jun 2022 | 01:36:05
We made it to episode 150, and we finally got to the long awaited "Heterosexual Movie by Gregg Araki", The Doom Generation with our friend Rudy Bleu. The anti-Clueless, this movie was every alternative young person's bible. Following two troubled teen lovers (James Duval and Rose McGowan) who pick up a mysterious drifter named Xavier (Jonathan Schaech) and run wild through the slums of the San Fernando Valley. The Doom Generation is quintessential 90s viewings. We talk about the sexual charge of Jonathan Schaech's eyebrows, James Duval's puppy dog delivery, the wild celebrity cameos by the likes of Eve Plumb, Amanda Bearse, Heidi Fleiss, and how iconic Rose McGowan is in that black bob. Grab some Doritos, and queue of your favorite industral track. It's the Doom Generation!

| 149. Weird Science with special guest Dylan Hay Chapman | 03 Jun 2022 | 01:40:27 | |
What do you little maniacs want to do first? We're not just talking candle wax on the nipples or witchcraft, or chip, dips, chain n whips, we're talking about the renegade John Hughes movie "Weird Science" (1985) with our favorite straight brother Dylan Hay-Chapman. Kelly LaBrock is insanely fierce as Lisa, the Marry Poppins for teenage boys. The gays want to be her, and the straights well you know… We talk about all the iconique Lisa costume changes, '80s bad boy cuties Robert Downey Jr and Robert Rusler, a scene stealing Bill Paxton, and the two teenage boys (Anthony Michael Hall, and Ilan Mitchell-Smith) at the center of one of the horniest teen movies ever made. | 148. Alien with special guest Drew Stanley | 27 May 2022 | 01:31:42
In space no one call hear you scream yas queen! We watched the science fiction monolith 'Alien' directed by Ridley Scott on the podcast, and if you're not empowered by feminist icon Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) we'll blow you out of the airlock. With guest Drew Stanley @nameverb we talk about Ripley, the rest of the Nostromo Crew (humm Daddy Tom Skerritt), and yes the titular Alien aka Xenoporph queen herself. We get into what makes the Alien film series so sexually subversive, and why Ellen Ripley belongs in the Pantheon of ass kicking women action stars. | 240. Joy Ride with special guest Michael Morgan | 14 Jun 2024 | 01:54:43
"Candy Cane? Hey anybody know a Candy Cane?" We watched "Joy Ride" (2001) with the hilarious Michael Morgan and we're still brushing up on our CB lingo. This little gem of a movie from 2001 fits nicely into that category of unintentionally homoerotic films from the early aughts. Obviously, Paul Walker (RIP) is serving your friendly neighborhood Abercrombie & Fitch employee that stood outside the store, possibly shirtless, definitely way too hot to ever speak to in person, but we would be remiss to leave out or guy Steve Zahn. All three of us have in our notes how cute Steve Zahn is in this movie - even with his dad-chic tucked in shirts and light washed, relaxed fit denim. We buy them as estranged brothers on a road trip to pick up Lewis's (Paul Walker) crush? Girlfriend? FWB? Whoever she is her name is "Venna" and she's played by the stoic - and since retired - Leelee Sobieski. Don't ask us why, but if you were a fan of Leelee's work around this time - you're gay now. On this road trip across the American west, the boys play a prank on a trucker via their newly installed CB radio and all hell breaks loose. This movie has many rewind-able moments for little gay boys including Paul and Steve's buns on full display and Paul giving us his best lady voice over the CB, impersonating the fictitious "Candy Cane". The scary trucker hell-bent on revenge is named "Rusty Nail" and the voice is provided by none other than "Buffalo Bill" himself, Ted Levine. It doesn't get anymore queer coded than that.

| 147. Working Girl with special guest Moranne Klassen | 20 May 2022 | 01:55:17 | |
We finally got the Mike Nichols feminist classic "Working Girl", and like its lead heroine Tess we have got a head for business, and a bod for sin We are joined by our good friend, and fellow working girl Moranne Klassen @mokee to discuss the overall influences and empowerment the film delivered to a 1980s audience. A career making lead performance by Melanie Griffith, a truly inspiring song by Carly Simon, scene stealing Oscar nominated performances by Sigourney Weaver, and Joan Cusack: Working Girl has it all. | 146. Chicago with special guest Pickens Barringer | 13 May 2022 | 01:22:35
"Slick your hair and wear your buckle shoes… And all that jazz." We watched the 2002 Rob Marshall directed musical 'Chicago' with our buddy Pickens Barringer, and all a sudden we are overcome with belting THAT JAZZZ while dancing to Bob Fosse choreo. Twenty years later it's still one of the best stage to screen musicals ever. We talk about the casting perfection going on here. That Oscar was in the clear for Catherine Zeta Jones in the first number alone. Everything going on here is seamlessly staged by Marshell, and we talk about the multiverse of Roxie and Velma casting possiblities. We adore these two husband killing broads, and nod in agreement that 'They had it comin', because that's Chicago! | 145. Auntie Mame with special guest Darren Elms | 06 May 2022 | 01:24:40
"Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!" We watched Auntie Mame (1958) with our friend Darren Elms and someone get us a Dr. Pepper! There's just something about a glamorous woman of a certain age that gay boys just gravitate towards. We all want to be as fabulous as Auntie Mame someday, even though we may be more like Agnes Gooch. Rosalind Russel's iconic performance as Mame is truly living life like a gay man, or a drag queen. Either way she is everything we strive to be and more, while we're all just little Patrick Dennis or poor Agnes Gooch just trying to keep up. | 144. Reality Bites (1994) Directed by Ben Stiller | 29 Apr 2022 | 01:34:54
"It's like MTV but with an edge." We watched Reality Bites (1994) directed by Ben Stiller and we're gonna go grab a couple of Big Gulps. We're back with the winner of our Janeane Garofalo mini challenge and we're jumping in the way-back machine to take a trip to the 90's! Generation X, irony-loving, thrift store-shopping, 70's sitcom-quoting slackers abound in this comic coming of age story. Recent college grad Lelaina (Winona Ryder) and her pals are trying to navigate life, love and work in the real world. Constant pop culture references and wall to wall nostalgia really paved the way for sitcom writing for years to come. Snappy dialogue, great clothes, cute boys and not to mention a killer soundtrack keep us coming back to re-live the 90's. | 143. Labyrinth with special guest Jared Anderson | 15 Apr 2022 | 01:42:39
"Turn Back, Sarah. Turn back before it's too late." We watched Labyrinth (1986) with our good-Judy Jared Anderson and we wish the Goblin King would come and take you away… right now. Sixteen-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Connelley) faces off against Jareth the Goblin King (David Bowie) and a generation's sexual awakening began. Bowie is giving androgynous ren-faire realness and Connelley is giving ethereal drama-kid/teen model. And you can trust and believe we get into that cod-piece. Is it icky that the Goblin King is so actively seducing this young girl? A little, but it's all fantasy and (spoiler alert) Sarah finds her way back to her kick ass bedroom in her dad and stepmoms sweet Victorian house in Portland. The puppet work by Jim Henson's Creature Shop will transport you to another world, the costumes will make you want to head over to Party City right now, and the MUSIC! Don't get us started on the soundtrack by David Bowie. It's FIRE. Grab a cold mug of mead, break out your tights and lets get theatrical! Say it with us… "You have no power over me!" | 142. Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael with special guest Michael Morgan | 08 Apr 2022 | 01:22:25
"That was a thirty-two dollar sweater, missy, and you dyed it black, didn't you?" We watched Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael (1990) with the always outrageous Michael Morgan and I could use an Almond Roca. Gen-X Queen Winona Ryder is at it again, this time playing strange and unusual all-black-wearing loner Dinkey Bossetti. Dinky is obsessed with the cute boy in her class, feeding stray animals and the town legend, the mysterious Roxy Carmichael. We never picked up on the Sapphic under (and over) tones in this movie until this watching, but man - this movie is gay! From the Melissa Etheridge soundtrack, the over-sexed townies waking up to post coital brunch, and don't get us started on the guidance counselor. Are the fleeting images of Roxy in her L.A. manse all in Dinky's head? And if they are - why is she always naked?! And most importantly, we answer the age old question - is Jeff Daniels hot? Spoiler alert - the answer is yes. | 141. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King | 01 Apr 2022 | 01:44:17
"I'm glad to be here with you Samwise Gamgee. Here at the end of all things." We watched The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King all by our damn selves and we're ready for second breakfast. OK let's be real, these movies aren't exactly passing the Bechtel Test but when the ladies are finally trotted out they're serving fragrance commercial Eleganza and we're loving every fleeting minute of it. Orlando Bloom as Legolas the Elf ignited many a sexual awakening and the Hobbits are really giving us a lot to work with in this episode. Did Frodo and Sam get gay Hobbit married on the side of that mountain? We like to think so. Once circuit-gay Gollum gets thrown into the volcano and destroys the Ring Frodo goes through his emo phase, Sam marries a lady-Hobbit and they both act like their mountain-top wedding never happened. A likely story. "What's the point of doing anything worthwhile if nobody's watching? And if people are watching, it makes you a better person." We watched To Die For (1995) with our good bestie Ashley from Keep It Weird Podcast!! It's Oscar season and we are here for our Nic! Enough time has passed that we can honestly say Nicole Kidman was ROBBED of an Oscar nomination for her bat-S crazy performance in this film. Joaquin Phoenix is serving teenage dirtbag who doesn't know any better but bless him, he's so cute. Suzanne Stone is officially the best stage name on earth and she had a dream of being on TV but if Matt Dillon wanted to run an Italian restaurant and we could stay home and be a kept wife… props to ya momma. Nicole steals the movie with this performance and we love every minute of it.

| 139. Star Trek with Seán Ferrick | 18 Mar 2022 | 01:38:22 | |
We talk ALL things Star Trek with ultimate Trek encyclopedia Seán Ferrick (TrekCulture) and we're boldly going… you know the rest. Why are queer people so drawn to Star Trek? That's like asking why gays love horror - no one knows! Well some people know. Star Trek promised us a vision of the future free from poverty, sexism and prejudice (just don't look too deep into the origins of the Klingons) and us gays long for a place where we can just be ourselves right? Star Trek also promises us a future filled with metallic non-stretch fabrics, pointy sideburns and catsuits for everyone! This episode we take a deep dive into the Star Trek The Next Generation episode "The Outcast" from 1992 which takes a veiled look at homosexuality and gender when Riker (Jonathan Frakes) falls for a member of a non-binary alien species (played by a cis-female actor). We talk about what lured us into Star Trek, what we still love about the franchise all these years later and how we would make a living in the Star Trek universe. Guinan has gotta need a bar back right? In the Trek universe the men are macho, the women are fabulous and the gays can't get enough of it. Live long, and prosper!
| 138. Thirteen with special guest Donovan Marcotte | 11 Mar 2022 | 01:34:31 | |
"Mothers, lock up your sons!" We watched Thirteen (2003) with our friend Donovan Marcotte and we're still clutching our pearls. Your wanna feel like a granny, out of touch with the kids these days? Watch this movie. Catherine Hardwicke directed this groundbreaking indie from a script she co-wrote with then teenage Nikki Reed (The Twilight Saga). Evan Rachel Wood and Reed play best friends wrapped up in the unparalleled drama of teenage friendship - where every decision you made was life or death. And some of these outfits are to die for. We're talking early Avril Lavigne levels of safety pins, cutouts and stripes. Holly Hunter knocks it out of the park (per usual) as Wood's put upon mom and Jeremy Sisto is dreamy as ever. We must be getting old - we're rooting for the parents and just want to shake these girls and tell em to SNAP OUT OF IT! | 239. Volver with special guest Sandra Espinoza | 07 Jun 2024 | 01:48:31
"Don't say that, Raimunda, or I'll start crying. And ghosts don't cry." We watched "Volver" (2006) directed by iconic Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar and excuse us, we need to go call our mothers. Penélope Cruz plays Raimunda - a mother who does what needs to be done to protect her daughter in a time of dire need. When the ghost of Raimunda's mother shows up with some unfinished business, Raimunda, her daughter Paula (Yohana Cobo) and her sister Sole (Lola Dueñas) are all able to come to terms with some major family issues. Almodóvar directs these women in a way that only he can - showing this inter-generational story with all the weight and humor we really encounter in life. We talk about Almodóvar's reunion with actress Carmen Maura (of previous MTMUG episode "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), the heartbreaking beauty of Spain and how the "dressed down" Penélope Cruz is more beautiful than any of us even on our best day. | 137. Terminator 2: Judgment Day with special guest Lucas Hazlitt | 04 Mar 2022 | 01:42:06
"I need your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle." We watched Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) with the very funny Lucas Hazlett and man do we love this movie. It's a known fact that we Stan Jim Cameron, but this episode goes deep into why. The man knows how to write a screenplay. T2 is the sequel to a low budget scifi indie and it has gone down as one of the most influential movies of the 90s. Aside from being a SOLID script - the copious amount of buns, the two daddy's vying for the attention of the kid, the Village People aesthetic - it all ads up to a gay boys dreams. Throw in Linda Hamilton butching is up - we can't give this movie enough love. Oh and we get into some really critical thinking about the time travel in this one! Hasta la vista babies! | 136. Jawbreaker with special guest Thomas Dekker | 25 Feb 2022 | 01:13:39
"Never send a rose unless dyed black as a warning." We watched Jawbreaker (1999) with the fablous Thomas Dekker and we killed the teen dream. Deal with it. Darren Stein wrote and directed this candy colored fantasy and we are all the gayer for it. Rose McGowan absolutely devours every line she delivers (and there are some doozys) with Rebecca Gayheart and Julie Benz giving us prototype mean girls. Judy Greer kills it as Fern Mayo/Vylette and the supporting cast of Pam Grier, Carol Kane, Jeff Conaway (and a couple of "Carrie" cameos) are *chefs kiss*. Jawbreaker is inconic and if you ever said Rose McGowan was your crush - you're gay now. We don't make the rules. "Lifes a bitch, then you die." | 135. Pretty Woman with special guest Chris Rosson | 18 Feb 2022 | 01:38:20
"Well color me happy! There's a sofa in here for two!" We watched Pretty Woman (1990) with our friend Chris Rosson and we want the fairy tale. Julia Roberts and Laura San Giacomo are friendship goals. OK so they're both sex workers and Kit De Luca (San Giacomo) may or may not be a junkie with zero to no money management skills. But they got each other. And Vivian Ward (Roberts) is the original "hooker with a heart of gold." Richard Gere plays Edward Lewis a little tightly wound but hey it was the 90's and he had some sort of vague high pressure job. It's still hard to believe that Disney had their fingerprints anywhere near this movie, but the script is charming and director Garry Marshall turned what could have been a dark cautionary tale into one of the most memorable rom-coms of the 90s. | 134. Romeo + Juliet with special guest Espie Quintero | 11 Feb 2022 | 01:51:06
Two houses, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona, where we lay our scene. We watched William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (1996) with our friend Espie Quintero and "A Plague on both your houses!" Aesthetically gifted Australian director Baz Luhrmann gifted unto the 1990's this perfect chocolate box of a movie for "The MTV generation." We were just learning about this wunderkind actor Leonardo DiCaprio when this movie exploded into theaters (and our loins) and the rest is history. Romeo and Juliet was standard reading in high school and 90's teens rejoiced when we found out it was getting "updated" with the dreamboat from "The Basketball Diaries" and Angela Chase herself - Claire Danes from "My So-Called Life!" Our little queer hearts (and our loins) burst. The cast absolutely crushes it, the soundtrack is killer and the costumes still make us swoon. This movie is nearly untouched by time and we are so stoked to be talking about it. | 133. Scream 2 with special guest Andy Ur | 04 Feb 2022 | 01:32:50
"That is so Moral Majority." We watched Scream 2 with our friend Andy Ur and Season 4 of Movies That Made Us Gay is here! It's still Scream Season and we're giving you a FULL episode of the second entry in this hallowed franchise. Sidney (Neve Campbell) and Randy (Jamie Kennedy) are now in college with a fresh crop of victims for a copycat killer(s?) to pick off one by one. Leaning WAY into the sequel-ness of it all - the body count is indeed bigger and the death scenes are in fact more elaborate (poor SMG). The "Stab" film within a film starring Heather Graham, Tori Spelling and Luke Wilson is *chef's kiss* and the now standard opening kill with Jada Pikett Smith and Omar Epps is still terrifying. Oh, and Randy's Film Theory discussion of sequels lives rent free in our brains. "There's no accounting for taste." | 132. Carol with special guest Jackson Cooper | 31 Dec 2021 | 01:50:55
"Just when you think it can't get any worse, you run out of cigarettes." We watched Carol (2015) with MTMUG Superstar Jackson Cooper and we'll take the train set! Cate Blanchett is giving us EVERYTHING as Carol the bored housewife/secret lesbian in 1950's New York. Rooney Mara's Therese is giving us wide-eyed innocence, even though she really knows exactly what she's doing. The costumes, the hair, the setting all reeled us in (we're once again "transported) but the melodrama, the old timey dialogue and the New England WASPy character names are just the icing on the cake. Let's also give it up for Grand High Lesbian Sarah Paulson as the best friend/ex lover she was born to play and Jake Lacey once again playing America's problematic boyfriend. | 131. Hook wth special guest Joshua Clement | 24 Dec 2021 | 01:47:46
"So, Peter, you've become a pirate." We watched Hook (1991) with MTMUG Superstar Joshua Clement and we've lost our marbles. Steve Spielberg's 1991 continuation of Peter Pan gave us iconic performances and a couple of arguably draggy character pieces. Dame Maggie Smith in Granny Wendy Drag and Dustin Hoffman in Captain Hook High Drag are at the top of the list but Robin Williams and Dante Basco are giving them a run for the money. Robin's 30-something Peter Banning (Pan) goes from executive realness to cosplay queen while Dante as Rufio is serving Mother of the House of Lost Boys in full Road Warrior couture, complete with red Capezio dance shoes. Don't worry - we get to the one and only Julia Roberts giving us ginger Tinkerbell realness. Say it and mean it... "I believe in fairies!" | 130. The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas with special guest Ben Cheaves | 17 Dec 2021 | 01:19:04
"It's always a business doing pleasure with you!" We watched The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) with our friend Ben Cheaves and we need to pick up one of them Japanese sling shots. Dolly Parton and Mr. Burt Reynolds boot scoot and boogie their way across the screen in this country fried musical from the director of "9 to 5", Colin Higgins. Burt's sheriff drag and Dolly's saloon madame couture are pretty queer but you are not truly gay until you have seen a room full of 1980's male ballet dancers having a hoedown in a football locker room in nothing but jock straps and cowboy boots. The ladies of The Chicken Ranch are equally fabulous sporting looks as varied as classic country lady of the evening, disco diva and Pat Benatar realness. Truly a sight to behold. Move over "The Bodyguard" because this movie closes out with I Will Always Love You as sung by the original Dolly Parton herself. "It was the nicest little whorehouse you ever saw!" | 129. The Rules of Attraction with special guest Mike Toscano | 10 Dec 2021 | 01:39:12
"No one ever knows anyone. You're not ever gonna know me." We watched The Rules of Attraction (2002) with MTMUG Superstar Mike Toscano and we always knew it would be like this. We're taking another trip into Bret Easton Ellis territory with this slick entry from director Roger Avery. The cast is filled to the brim with beautiful up and comers and even one or two teen soap stars trying to break the mold. Released during the Golden Age of the Special Edition DVD - we talk about all FIVE commentary tracks and even the infamous deleted scene that was left off the DVD featuring Casper Van Dien taking on the role of American Psycho's Patrick Bateman (apparently Christian Bale was busy). Our teenage gay selves showed up for the college boys dancing in their underwear but our adult gay selves keep coming back for Swoosie Kurtz and Faye Dunaway popping pills over martinis. Rock and Roll. | 128. But I'm A Cheerleader with special guest Zoë Secrest | 03 Dec 2021 | 01:29:10
"Foreplay is for sissies! Real men go in, unload, and pull out!" We watched "But I'm a Cheerleader" with our friend Zoë Secrest, and like its heroine Megan (Natasha Lyonne) we might or might not have been eating tofu and had a giant Melissa Etheridge poster in our bedrooms growing up. A staple of queer cinema of the early 00s, we love this razor sharp and hilarious satire by writer/director Jamie Babbit Join us as we follow Megan as she falls down the rabbit hole of gay conversion camp at 'New Directions' lead by Cathy Moriarty and RuPaul Charles. We want to be best friends with lesbian icon Clea Duvall, and can agree that Moriarty screaming sexual positions over a megaphone is a mood. | 238. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior with special guest Will Padilla from 1980s Now Podcast | 31 May 2024 | 01:48:46
"You want to get out of here? You talk to me." Buckle your seatbelt because we had Will Padilla from the "1980s Now" podcast over to watch the George Miller 80s action classic Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior just in time for "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" to hit theaters. We talk about the wild aesthetics of Miller's apocalyptic adventure that follows Mad Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) who helps a community of settlers to defend themselves against Lord Humungus' Marauders and his biker gang who roams the wastelands of the Australian Outback. Name a couple more iconic to these movies than Wez (Vernon Wells) and the Golden Youth (Jerry O'Sullivan) on that motorcycle. We talk about the BDSM and leather influences that went onto be an entire vibe of the 1980s and we go into the evolution of Mad Max going from a scrappy independent 1979 film, to the post-apocalyptic Road Warriors car chases, to the monumental blockbuster Fury Road. We also take some time towards the end to break down what did and didn't work for us about the new film Furiosa. | 127. The Ice Storm with special guest Stanley Jacobus | 26 Nov 2021 | 01:38:59
"Libbets? What sort of a name is Libbets?" We watched The Ice Storm (1997) with our friend Stanley Jacobus and I think it's time to refill our waterbeds. This family drama is full of killer performances - Joan Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Christina Ricci own this movie. The 1970's art direction and costume design truly transports us every time we watch. Sigourney Weaver's bountiful hair and gorgeous makeup is enough to keep us revisiting, but her icy (pun intended) performance is the real star here. We all agree Christina Ricci's little red riding hood knit poncho is wardrobe goals but at the end of the day we want to be Sigourney when we grow up. | 126. Purple Rain (1984) with special guest Christian Turner | 19 Nov 2021 | 01:44:05
Dearly beloved... we watched Purple Rain (1984) with our friend Christian Turner and we need to purify ourselves in the waters or Lake Minnetonka. There never has been and never will be another like Prince Rogers Nelson and there is no other movie like Purple Rain. This movie is so bananas it has to be seen to be believed. Prince and The Revolution, Morris Day and The Time and Apollonia all play fictionalized versions of themselves in a fantasyland Minneapolis where nightclub acts reign supreme, leather and lace are worn freely (during the day) and people make their way TO Minnesota to make it in the biz. You may finish the movie with more questions than answers but watching nearly the entire Purple Rain album performed in a packed club full of 1984 Central Casting extras makes it all worth while. | 125. Legend (1985) Directed by Ridley Scott | 12 Nov 2021 | 01:38:11
"What is light without dark?" We watched Legend (1985) directed by Ridley Scott and what we wouldn't give to run around the forest hugging woodland creatures and get wine drunk with fairies. This movie is HIGH fantasy and we are here for it. Baby Tom Cruise is prancing around without any pants, Mia Sara is serving high-fashion face, face, beauty, face and Tim Curry is giving us CAMP as gym-bunny muscle-queen Lord of Darkness. This movie is peak 80's fantasy up there with any Henson or Lucasfilm classic and definitely not to be missed. | 124. Madonna: Truth or Dare with special guest Marlene Stang | 05 Nov 2021 | 01:45:00
"Why would you say something if it's off-camera? What point is there existing?" We watched Madonna: Truth or Dare with our friend Marlene Stang and anybody who says our show is "neat" has got to go. Part documentary, part concert film, part reality show, this revolutionary movie knocked our socks off and sparked a sexual awakening in an entire generation. The biggest pop star on Earth was incorporating dance moves from black gay clubs, using ethnically diverse flamboyantly homosexual dancers and beaming it into YOUR living room whether you liked it or not. Madonna famously says it is her job to push peoples buttons and push she did. Truth or Dare showcased gay people in such a matter of fact way you couldn't help but fall in love with these queens in her cavalcade of show biz shenanigans. "Witches... All of them witches!" We watched Rosemary's Baby (1968) with our friend the very funny Muffy Bolding and this is no dream - this is really happening! We're not saying we'd make a deal with the devil but a Pre-War 3 bedroom in The Bramford on Central Park West is nothing to scoff at. We always pictured ourselves as Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow); a wisp of a girl with the mod haircut and babydoll wardrobe. Then reality sets in and we realize we're more like Minnie Castevet, played by the incomparable Ruth Gordon, the busybody neighbor with no filter and zero F*cks given. | 122. Friday the 13th Part 2 with special guests Jackson Cooper and Pickens Barringer | 22 Oct 2021 | 01:34:20
"These kids smoke better dope than I do." We watched Friday the 13th Part 2 with our friends Jackson Cooper and Pickens Barringer and the body count continues! Clocking in at a brisk 87 minutes (shorter than the length of this episode!) this quickie sequel cranks up the scares, the gore and the casual nudity - not to mention the wall-to-wall cute boys. Pretty-boy Scott (Russel Todd), sensitive Mark (Tom McBride), oversexed Jeff (Bill Randolph), even prankster Ted (Stuart Charno) can all hit it six ways to Sunday. Even square head-counselor Paul (John Furey) is serving up major 80's hottie vibes. At the end of the day, final-girl Ginny played by Amy Steel is the real MVP of this one. Donning full Mrs. Voorhees drag, she goops and gags Jason to take the crown and make it out of Camp Crystal Lake alive... barely. "I'm gonna get my Liberace records!" We watched Misery (1990) and we still feel all oogie. From master horror author Stephen King, Misery give us absolute lunatic Annie Wilkes brought to us in an Academy Award winning performance by Kathy Bates. The ultimate super-fan, Wilkes takes obsession to new heights when she holds romance novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) hostage after a near fatal car accident. This movie is so well acted we even buy Sonny Corleone as a romance novelist! Do we all have a little Annie Wilkes in us? Hopefully not too much. How's your head? We watched Sleepy Hollow (1999) with our friend and MTMUG Superstar Billy Roach and tonight the horseman comes for you! This movie is peak Tim Burton - we're talking dramatic American-Gothic scenery, Johnny Depp putting on a silly voice, and Lisa Marie scaring the ever loving heck out of us. Not to mention Miranda Richardson in a drag-worthy dual role and Christina Ricci looking like a living Margaret Keen painting. It's funny, scary, definitely campy and at times a straight up gore-fest. Do yourself a favor and revisit Sleepy Hollow. And don't forget… watch your head. "Donnie Darko. What the hell kind of name is that? It's like some sort of superhero or something." We watched Donnie Darko with MTMUG Superstar Michael Morgan and we have serious doubts about your commitment to Sparkle Motion! It's our first Jake Gyllenhaal review and this movie does not disappoint. Remember when the gays would constantly claim Jake as one of our own? We just couldn't resist that doe-eyed stare. Donnie Darko really put Jake on the mainstream radar. First of all can we talk about this cast? Drew Barrymore's Flower Films production company went to bat to get this movie made and and Drew herself plays Donnie's too-cool English teacher. America's hipster girlfriend and Jakes real-life sister Maggie Gyllenhaal, absolute icon Patrick Swayze and the Legendary Beth Grant, to name a few, round out this stellar ensemble. Is there really an answer to what this movie is actually about? Maybe not - but we try to get to the bottom of it. We'll leave you with this... Cellar Door. "You're living in the past, this is the 14th century." We watched Sleeping Beauty (1959) with our friend Devin Lotfi (I Don't Want To Hear That! Podcast) and we could use some beauty sleep. The last of the Disney Classic fairy tales - until The Little Mermaid was released 30 years later. Nothing comes close to Eleanor Audley's ICONIC performance as Maleficent. We all can agree the Mistress of Evil has got some style! I mean who hasn't let their petty side come out after realizing you weren't invited to the party? Princess Aurora is serving some 1950's Barbie proportions and Prince Phillip is BAE! I mean he fought off all the powers of HELL!! | 237. Miss Congeniality with special guest Elizabeth Teets | 24 May 2024 | 01:44:05
"I am in a dress, I have gel in my hair, I haven't slept all night, I'm starved, and I'm armed! Don't *mess* with me!" We had author and comedian Elizabeth Teets over to discuss the Sandra Bullock classic Miss Congeniality, and HEY I'M GLIDING HERE! We love a movie in which an otherwise stunner like Sandy Bullock is slapped with some glasses, frizzed out hair and a penchant for tripping over things and suddently we are to believe she's some kind of crone no straight man would give a second look to. We are suspending our disbelief for the sake of comedy and beleive me - Sandy is selling it! FBI Special Agent Gracie Hart doesn't wear makeup, can't walk in heels and in lesser hands this trope might not have worked, but there are some comedic chops throughout this cast. Heavy hitters like Michael Caine, Candice Bergen and yes even William Shatner are doing some great work here. We're not forgetting Benjamin Bratt and his chiseled face - did he go on to play nearly the same character in "Catwoman"? Maybe, but it's all good, he's charming and has some great chemistry with Sandy. Maybe you didn't start this episode thinking you'd get a deep dive into Candy Bergen's backstory (Yes she's the heiress to a ventriloquist fortune!) but hey it's here and now you have some Hollywood trivia you didn't know you needed. Don't worry, we address Ernie Hudson and how he hasn't aged a single day from this movie... he's been added to the list of celebs who took the potion. Oh and we have seen the sequel "Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous" but the original will always be the superior entry. Come on you poor unfortunate soul! We watched The Little Mermaid (1989) with our friend Allison Levitan and we want to be part of your world! If you didn't swim like a mermaid in the swimming pool after watching this movie are you even gay? This movie not only started the Disney animation renaissance, but it launched a thousand gay boys life-long mermaid fascination. Throw in the DREAMY Prince Eric and the Drag Queen Ursula and you have one heck of a homosexual experience. "You ruined my new jacket! Kill him A LOT!" We watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) with our friend Jacob Carrillo and we still just want to marry Christian Slater and die. Back before Sarah Michelle Gellar and the "Scooby gang" were galavanting around Sunnydale trying to close the Hellmouth, there was the Buffy movie with Kristy Swanson and the oh-so-dreamy Luke Perry. Serving as a jumping-off point for the TV series, the movie itself is super charming with its uber 90's cast, wardrobe and overall aesthetic. Luke Perry in a Caesar cut and soul patch? Swoon! We can't help but draw parallels to the TV series, but we try to keep the conversation aimed towards the movie. I mean they're just SO different - movie Buffy is ash blonde, TV Buffy is honey blonde! | 115. Fight Club with special guest Drew Stanley | 03 Sep 2021 | 01:33:59
"I want brain parasites." We watched Fight Club (1999) with our friend Drew Stanley and we want you to hit us as hard as you can. It's our TENTH movie from 1999 which just proves it really was the best movie year ever. Not to worry - we don't go too hard on the forensic analysis of this often misunderstood movie. We do however touch on themes of toxic masculinity, hyper violence and the acid-goth-rave wardrobe of Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter. Director David Fincher's ahead of their time visuals were immediately ripped off, firmly placing the visual style of the movie into pop culture history. Ok we get it - how could a movie about a group of shirtless men meeting in a dark basement to pound the living hell out each other possibly have gay undertones? Oh wait.
