Parenting Through Crisis: Kristina Kuzmic on Mental Health, Mistakes, and Her New Book I Can Fix This12 Oct 202400:35:11

This week on Motherhood Unstressed, I sit down with the inspiring and candid Kristina Kuzmic to talk about her new book, I Can Fix This. In this raw and heart-opening conversation, Kristina shares the deeply personal story of supporting her son through his struggles with depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. As a mother navigating these challenges, she reveals the critical role that curiosity, self-awareness, and self-compassion played in helping her connect with her children on a deeper level.

Kristina and I also dive into the complex balance between control and connection, the importance of self-care, and the power of seeking help when parenting feels overwhelming. Together, we explore how embracing discomfort and personal growth can lead to more authentic relationships with our children, and how self-reflection and vulnerability can transform the way we approach parenting.

If you’ve ever felt the weight of parenting, questioned your instincts, or needed reassurance that you’re not alone, this episode is for you. You’ll walk away with a fresh perspective on parenting, mental health, and the power of self-awareness. Don’t miss Kristina’s deeply honest reflections and actionable insights on building a stronger bond with your kids—while learning to be kinder to yourself in the process.

Heidi Reimer's "The Mother Act": Balancing Self and Sacrifice in Motherhood02 Apr 202400:38:27

Heidi Reimer's journey into motherhood sparked the inspiration for her latest work, "The Mother Act," a poignant exploration of the intricate dance between maternal devotion and personal fulfillment.

As a stay-at-home mother juggling the demands of caring for a baby and a toddler while her actor husband traveled for work, Heidi found herself at a crossroads. In a moment of quiet desperation, she contemplated the unthinkable: walking away from it all. Yet, instead of succumbing to her fleeting thoughts, Heidi channeled her emotions into a feverish burst of creativity, weaving her experiences into a literary tapestry that captures the essence of modern motherhood.

"The Mother Act" delves deep into the trials, triumphs, and sacrifices of motherhood, offering a bold perspective on the thin line between self-prioritization and self-centeredness. Through the lens of a mother and daughter duo, Heidi explores themes of identity, ambition, and the profound impact of our choices on those we love.

Tune in as we dissect the greater themes within "The Mother Act," from its feminist undertones to its exploration of the complexities of womanhood. Join us as we unravel the layers of this compelling narrative, exploring how Heidi's personal journey informed her storytelling and the universal truths it unveils about the human experience. Whether you're a parent grappling with the challenges of balancing family and personal aspirations or simply a lover of thought-provoking literature, this conversation promises to enlighten and inspire.

About Heidi

Heidi Reimer is a novelist and writing coach. Her debut novel,  The Mother Act, is coming from Penguin Random House in April 2024. Her writing interrogates the lives of women, usually those bent on breaking free of what they’re given to create what they yearn for. Her front row seat to The Mother Act’s theatrical world began two decades ago when she met and married an actor, and her immersion in motherhood began when she adopted a toddler and discovered she was pregnant on the same day. She has published in  ChatelaineThe New QuarterlyLiterary Mama, and the anthologies  The M Word: Conversations About Motherhood  and  Body & Soul: Stories for Skeptics and Seekers.

About the Book

Set against the sparkling backdrop of the theater world, this propulsive debut follows the complicated relationship between an actress who refuses to abandon her career and the daughter she chooses to abandon instead.

Sadie Jones, a larger-than-life actress and controversial feminist, never wanted to be a mother. No one feels this more deeply than Jude, the daughter Sadie left behind. While Jude spent her childhood touring with her father’s Shakespearian theater company, desperate for validation from the mother she barely knew, Sadie catapulted to fame on the wings of The Mother Act—a scathing one-woman show depicting her maternal rage.

Two decades later, Jude is a talented actress in her own right, and her fraught relationship with Sadie has come to a head—bitterly and publicly. On a December evening in New York City, at the packed premiere of Sadie’s latest play, the two come face-to-face and the intertwined stories of their lives unravel. With years of love, resentment, and misunderstanding laid bare, the questions loom: What are the costs of being a devoted mother and a devoted artist, and who gets to decide if the collateral damage is justified?

Compelling, insightful, and cleverly conveyed as a play in six acts, The Mother Act is equal parts stylish page-turner and provocative exploration of womanhood.

Filmmaker and Author Sasha Sagan ON: Motherhood, Ritual, and Her Father Carl Sagan22 Nov 202100:35:17

In this episode of Motherhood Unstressed I am speaking with author and filmmaker Sasha Sagan about her new book "FOR SMALL CREATURES SUCH AS WE" which was inspired by her viral essay for The Cut, “Lessons of Immortality and Mortality From My Father, Carl Sagan”. Sagan is the daughter of late astronomer/author Carl Sagan and writer/producer Ann Druyan.

Some of the topics we discuss:

  • How becoming a mother prompted Sagan to tap into her secular upbringing in the hopes of finding a non-religious worldview to pass on to her child
  • The power of secular rituals to process and understand the passage of time
  • What it was like growing up as the daughter of Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan
  • Nurturing a childlike sense of wonder as an adult for greater perspective and happiness

QUOTES

"Those questions, our place in the universe, reckoning with our own mortality, those deep philosophical questions about existence, there's just nothing that's more interesting to talk about, to wrestle with"

"So much of the book is a love letter to my parents... they both were comfortable with asking a question to which we do not know the answer and looking for evidence"

"Everything we consider traditional is new on the scale of human history...so I think there's a way to carve out the parts that are meaningful to us without feeling so beholden that we're in a position to go through the motions about things we don't really connect to"

About the Author:

Sasha Sagan has worked as a TV producer, filmmaker (she co-wrote and produced a film with best friend Kirsten Dunst, which was screened at Tribeca and closed Cannes in 2010), editor, writer, and speaker in New York, Boston, and London. Her essays and interviews on death, history, and ritual through a secular lens have appeared in New York Magazine, O Magazine, Lit Hub, Mashable, The Violet Book, and elsewhere. She regularly speaks on ways science can inform our celebrations and how we mark the passage of time.

FOR SMALL CREATURES SUCH AS WE is a moving tribute to a father, a newborn daughter, a marriage, and the natural world—a celebration of life itself, and the power of our families and beliefs to bring us together.

PRAISE FOR FOR SMALL CREATURES SUCH AS WE:

“Read her work; you’ll have a deeper appreciation for your every step, every bite, and every breath.”

Bill Nye, The Science Guy

“This lyrical exploration of how we can find beauty in the natural world comes from the daughter of Carl Sagan, so it's no wonder Sasha's reverence for the cosmos shines through on every page. It's part memoir, part history, part reflection, and all a wonderful gift for your favorite reader.”

Good Housekeeping

“Wonderful. . . An elixir for people facing personal crises in a secular world.”

Wall Street Journal

“A look at life, the cosmos, and finding magic in our daily lives.”

New York Post

“Like her parents, Sasha has the passion, brilliance, and ability to spark curiosity, skepticism, and hope, through the written word. Open mind required. No faith necessary.”

—Boing Boing

“[Sagan's] view is wide in scope and she draws connections between many fields of science, history, and pop culture. She's not afraid to speculate about the future, including the future of humanity. Her poetic, engaging prose will resonate with many readers, as will her refreshingly breeze and open-minded approach. While some writers today dwell on threats to humanity as if an apocalypse is already upon us and all our children will live horrible lives, Sagan suggests that, regardless of what's to come, we should make the most of the little moments we have on our little corner of the pale blue dot.”

Undark Magazine

“A gorgeous collection of essays. . . Birth, anniversaries, fasting, atonement: She approaches these subjects with wonderment and a generous window into her extraordinary family history. . . Sagan writes with stunning clarity and absolute joy. . . For Small Creatures Such As We is a marvel. It dazzles and comforts while making us consider our own place in the vast universe.”

BookPage

“From birthdays to funerals to the changing of the seasons to lunar cycles, [Sagan] thoughtfully explores how to blend science and spirituality. An eye-opening book for those who might question traditional religious celebrations but feel connected to the community, rituals, and comforts they provide, this is a refreshing, intelligent examination of faith, religion, and the many wonders of science worthy of celebration.”

Booklist, starred review

“In Sagan's astonishingly beautiful and wiser-beyond-one's-years debut, her lineage bursts forth on each page like a literary and scientific big bang. . . [Sagan writes] 'We can be sure that our ancestors, all of our ancestors, contemplated Earth's place in the universe with awe.' For Small Creatures Such As We very much deserves to be read in the same way. . . A wondrous journey exploring how rituals and celebration connect to life's greater meaning.”

Shelf Awareness for Readers

“Welcoming and tender. . . Charming and appealing, this thoughtful work serves as an uplifting, life-honoring celebration of human existence.”

Ozonaut Micah Lowe ON: The Many Health Benefits of Ozone Therapy15 Nov 202100:31:26

In this episode, Ozone Therapy expert Micah Lowe explains in simple terms how ozone therapy improves your body’s intake and use of oxygen, activates your immune system, increases energy and stamina, and improves cognitive and athletic performance.

Ozone is one of the most misunderstood oxidative molecules, but in reality it is an incredibly strong oxidant that alters your body at a cellular level and helps your mitochondria make more antioxidants. Tune in to find out how it helps heal chronic conditions and optimize health.

Some of the topics we discuss:

  • Ozone therapy for immune system support, athletic recovery, wound and skin care, pain relief, increasing energy and decreasing brain fog
  • How high-quality ozone generators and ozone kits (like show favorite Simply 03) work, and how to incorporate it with the rest of your health routine

QUOTES

"So, there’s a whole world of ozone that you can dive into. There’s ozone for municipalities. There’s ozone for wine making. There’s ozone for pools. There’s ozone for hot tubs. There’s ozone for aquariums, and then there’s medical ozone. They’re all different."

"Ozone is actually similar to exercise in that it signals a pathway called the NRF2 pathway, where it’s actually good for you, so, this can be good in terms of athletic performance because it’ll help people to recover faster. It’ll help them to diminish the effects of those workouts that are really tough.”

The female body shouldn’t be a medical mystery, unfortunately for most of modern medical history it has been. In fact, women weren’t required to be in clinical research until 1993, and women are diagnosed on average 4 years later than men for the same disease. That’s why my guest this week, Priyanka Jain, created Evvy, an at-home test that aims to close the gender health gap by discovering and leveraging overlooked biomarkers in the female body - starting with the vaginal microbiome.

Some of the topics we discuss:

  • The importance of the vaginal microbiome as a marker of female overall health
  • The existence of the gender health gap and how to begin to solve it with data
  • Metagenomic sequencing and analysis for indications of fertility and infertility

QUOTES

"I think every woman has their own version of the story of being misdiagnosed, or under diagnosed or misunderstood at the doctor's office"

"Women weren't required to be in clinical research until 1993...this is actually a data problem."

"As we started doing research on where to start, the vaginal microbiome became so clear that it was such an important biomarker and marker of health generally in the female body that we had never looked at before"

Letting Go of Ego - Guided Meditation27 Oct 202100:06:35

"The most common ego identifications have to do with possessions, the work you do, social status and recognition, knowledge and education, physical appearance, special abilities, relationships, person and family history, belief systems, and often nationalistic, racial, religious, and other collective identifications. None of these are you."

This week I’m so excited to be speaking with 2x NY Times bestselling cookbook author Elyse Kopecky to talk about her new book, co-authored with famed Olympic runner Shalane Flanagan, aptly named "RISE & RUN". It's a take-back-the-morning manifesto, complete with over 100 nutrient-dense recipes and the tools to establish an impactful morning routine. Shalane and Elyse’s message of ritualizing self-care—and fueling those moments with healthy, delicious meals—will resonate and leave you with some fun new ideas for your morning routine.

Nutrition coach and chef Elyse and Olympic silver-medalist Shalane are known for their healthy, high-fuel, go-to recipes. But a lot has changed for Shalane and Elyse since their last book, Run Fast. Cook Fast. Eat Slow, became a bestseller in 2018. Now both in their forties, Elyse is training for her first marathon, and Shalane is running 6 marathons in 43 days!

In RISE & RUN, they share how their routines have changed, and what they do to stay fueled and centered in their busy lives. These peeks behind the curtain—and their foolproof recipes—are what make Shalane and Elyse trusted resources for so many people trying to squeeze in time for their passions and keep their bodies healthy.

Some of the topics we discuss:

  • The struggles of finding balance in a busy life (kids, careers, relationships) and still prioritizing yourself, and what works for Elyse
  • How to clear your head and focus on the here and now with your kids
  • The top recipes that keep their bodies fueled without taking too much time to make
  • Recipes that fuel the whole family (even the picky eaters)

QUOTES

"Outside of running more miles, the single greatest thing athletes can do to improve their performance (and their long-term health and happiness) is to learn to cook."

"We know that how you start your morning impacts your entire day and most parents start their day frantic...if I start my day rushing it impacts my kids"

"When you drop your nervous system into a slower state, you can absorb more nutrition from your food"

This week writer and director Amy Koppelman joins me to discuss her new film "A Mouthful of Air", starring Amanda Seyfried, based on her powerful novel of the same name. Within the narrative of "A Mouthful of Air" is an argument about the nature of maternal depression—its causes, cures, and the price it exacts from its victims. This brutally honest portrayal of family and self illuminates the power and complexity of the human psyche and lends hope and support to those who may be currently struggling.

QUOTES

"Depression, real depression, it's an illness, no different from asthma and diabetes"

"Nobody tells you how scary it is to be a mom...it forces you, whether you want to or not, to confront things from your childhood...giving birth is physically rough on the body but it is also emotionally jarring"

About "A Mouthful of Air"

A Mouthful of Air is a compassionate and wrenching portrait of Julie Davis, a young wife and mother torn between the love she feels for her family and the voice in her head that insists they’d be better off without her.

When it was originally published almost twenty years ago, A Mouthful of Air was compared to seminal feminist works such as Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “A Yellow Wallpaper” and Sylvia Plath’s "The Bell Jar". It is a powerful, tragic Statement on motherhood, family, and survival. Within the narrative of A Mouthful of Air is an argument about the nature of depression—its causes, cures, and the price it exacts from its victims. With spare, elegant prose, this brutally honest portrayal of family and self illuminates the power and complexity of the human psyche.

Amy Koppelman is a graduate of Columbia's MFA program. Her writing has appeared in The New York Observer and Lilith. She lives in New York City with her husband and two children, and is the author of the novels, "A Mouthful of Air" and "Hesitation Wounds".

A Race Against Blindness: A Dad's Journey of Inspiration and Resilience Amidst a Rare Diagnosis24 Mar 202400:32:03

Stephen Johnston is a father, radiologist, nonprofit founder, and Ironman athlete, who faced his son Luke's life-altering diagnosis with resilience and determination.

At just seven years old, Luke was diagnosed with a rare disease: retinitis pigmentosa and Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS). With no medical intervention available for BBS-related retinitis pigmentosa, Luke faced the prospect of slowly losing his vision, eventually leading to blindness in his teenage years.

Undeterred by the daunting prognosis, Stephen embarked on a mission to save his son's sight. Connecting with a UK-based researcher on the cusp of human clinical trials for a potential treatment, Stephen founded A Race Against Blindness to raise $1 million for sight-saving research.

Through his relentless efforts, Stephen has raised over six figures, garnering attention from major media outlets like GoodMorningAmerica.com and various TV news stations. His story is not just about fundraising; it's about finding purpose in adversity and redefining resilience as a parent.

In this episode, Stephen shares invaluable insights on parenting through tough situations, setting a strong example for your children, and navigating co-parenting post-divorce, especially when faced with unexpected challenges like a serious medical condition.

In this episode we discuss:

  1. Finding Your Purpose Amidst Adversity and Channeling Change: Stephen discusses discovering his passion amidst his son's diagnosis and the complex emotions that accompany finding purpose in difficult situations.

  2. Making a Safe Space for Your Children Through Effective Co-Parenting Post-Divorce: Stephen offers practical tips on co-parenting through adversity, drawing from his experience of re-evaluating priorities and fostering family unity post-diagnosis.

  3. Setting a Strong Example: Modeling a Balance of Strength and Vulnerability for Your Children: Stephen shares how he redefined resilience and vulnerability to become a better parent, inspiring listeners to shift their mindset and embrace challenges.

  4. Parenting a Child Through Tough News: Stephen reflects on communicating difficult diagnoses to children, offering coping strategies and parenting tools to support children through challenging times.

Tune in to gain valuable insights from Stephen's journey and learn how to navigate parenthood with resilience and grace.

About Kute Blackson https://www.thenewmanpodcast.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/kute-blackson-bio.png

Kute has been recognized as the “Mindfulness guru that billionaires go to for advice” by Inc Magazine. See full article here.

A beloved inspirational speaker and transformational teacher, Kute Blackson offers a fresh, bold look at spiritual awareness for a whole new generation. Born in Ghana, West Africa, Kute’s multicultural upbringing as the child of a Japanese mother and a Ghanaian father has spanned four different continents. His unique lineage lay the foundation for his approach to breaking down barriers and unlocking an individual’s true gifts and greatness.

Kute quickly learned that the “outside-in” approach favored by so many in the personal development space had to become an inside-out approach. So he decided to create his own method—a process that liberates the individual and the true self at the core and then pushes those gifts outward into the universe. This helps the individual get in touch with who they really are. It is a process of breaking free—so that the individual can live, give, and share the truest expression of their self. This is what Kute calls “Liberated Living.”

How to Change Your Thoughts + Behaviors on Food, Dieting, Weight Stigma, and Body Shame with Wavelength App Creator Sarah Stites30 Aug 202100:36:24

In this conversation CEO and co-founder of Wavelength, Sarah Stites, and I discuss the power of changing your thoughts and behaviors around food, and the toxicity of diet culture, weight stigma, and body shame. Tune in to learn how changing how you think can improve your relationship with food for good!

Sarah was diagnosed with PCOS and pre-diabetes as a teen, gaining 100lbs within a year while struggling with dieting.

Instead of addressing the root causes of her eating habits, doctors and diet programs shamed her for her weight and lack of “willpower.” That’s when her mom, a scientist with a PhD and a masters degree in nutrition science stepped in. She helped her understand the science and psychology behind her eating choices, without guilt or shame. Sarah changed her eating by working with her body and mind, reversed her pre-diabetes, and lost 150lbs. That was ten years ago.

Together, Sarah and her mom created Wavelength — a holistic, compassionate, science-forward approach for anyone struggling with eating choices.

QUOTES

"The behavioral, the metabolic, the neurological patterns that underly our eating choices are complex, but it has nothing to do with the quality of your character, discipline, or willpower"

"By addressing the root causes of our eating behaviors we can fundamentally heal our relationship with food, change our health and change our stars"

Author and Climate Movement Organizer Daniel Sherrell joins me this week for a expansive conversation on climate change: not what it is or how we solve it, but the emotional terrain of the crisis, and how it feels to imagine a future—and a family—under its weight. In his new book, "Warmth", a fiercely personal account written from inside the climate movement, Sherrell lays bare how the crisis is transforming our relationships to time, to hope, and to each other. Tune in to learn how best to navigate these disheartening times, and parent with hope and purpose in an environmentally threatened world.

This week renowned spiritual medium Sarah Renee joins me for a wide ranging conversation on spirituality, mediumship and connecting with loved ones on the other side. Through her work conversing with those who have crossed over she is able to explain what happens to us when we die, how we form soul contracts with our friends and family before we are even born, and how to access the tremendous amount of support from our spiritual team of Angels, Guides and departed family members.

Over her career, Sarah has helped thousands of people, all around the world, experience a profound and deeply healing connection with Spirit. Tune in to learn more about life after death, how to expand your own intuition, and how you can ask for and recognize signs of support and direction in your own life from benevolent energies in the non-physical.

Talking to Your Kids About SEX with Author of "Making a Baby" Rachel Greener09 Aug 202100:28:52

The dreaded sex talk, how soon is too soon? Experts in the field of sex education tout that we should be talking to our kids about their bodies as soon as they can talk. Yet many parents are not having those conversations. In fact, a 2019 study stated that 63% of the teen boys reported that their parents had never talked with them about contraception, and 44% of the teen girls said the same. But talking to our kids about sex shouldn't elicit dread, it's actually a great way to begin an ongoing conversation about relationships, body parts, boundaries, respect, privacy and consent.

In this episode I'm speaking with author and book editor Rachel Greener about her new book "Making a Baby", an unabashed and unapologetic portrayal of who we are, how we came to be, and how families are made. It answers the age old “Where did I come from” question as well as all young reader’s questions about their life in full detail, from conception to birth, and how they were able to join their family.

MAKING A BABY shows that since there’s more than one way to make a baby, there is more than one way to make a family – whether babies are born through fertilization, IVF, IUI, adoption, or surrogacy; proving above all that families can be made from anywhere and with anyone.

Ageless: The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old with Dr. Andrew Steele12 Jul 202100:37:32

Imagine having energy and vitality right up to the very end. Imagine not ending up frail, decrepit, or unable to bring your body back to balance because you didn’t think it—aging—would happen to you? This week Dr. Andrew Steele is on the show to discuss his new book, "Ageless: The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old" and the exciting new scientific discoveries that address what he calls "the greatest humanitarian issue of our time."

In this episode you will learn what aging actually is, and how scientists are studying every aspect of the body - DNA, mitochondria, senescent cells, stem cells, our immune systems, even longevity genes to help increase the lifespan of animals tenfold - all in an effort to forestall or even reverse our decline.

About the Book

HOW TO BE OLD shows readers that while you can’t control everything, what you can control is the way you think about your age and the creative ways you respond to the changes in your mind and body as they happen.

Rather than trying to meet standards of youth and beauty as a measure of successful aging,
Slater promotes a more inclusive and empowering standard to judge our older selves by.
A true icon and trendsetter in more ways than one, Slater will inspire readers to reimagine
what’s possible with the tales of her bold, fashionable, and rebellious journey in HOW TO BE
OLD.
