Let’s go back to 1980 when Dolly Parton starred in one of the biggest movies of the decade, “9 to 5.” Starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin - they worked together in the movie to take revenge on their sexist, egotistical boss - the film was a feminist-leaning comedy which centered around workplace inequality. Dolly actually wrote the song “9 to 5” specifically for the movie, which became an anthem for working-class Americans, especially women. Nine to Five didn’t just make Dolly Parton a movie star, it expanded her image beyond country music, proving she could dominate film, pop charts, and cultural moments. The film grossed over $100 million and was one of the highest-grossing films of 1980, which was really impressive for a comedy led by women.

Happy Birthday to Randy Houser! He turns the big 5-0 today…let’s look back on some of Randy’s biggest hits Awhhh yes, Honky Tonk Badonkadonk, it became a crossover smash hit with co-writer Trace Adkins in the 2000s. Before Randy had his breakthrough as an artist, he helped write some of our favorite songs in country music. Back that thing up, he wrote this with Justin Moore back in 2008 - Randy moved to Nashville in the early 2000s, and it wasn’t until his songs “Anything Goes” and “How Country Feels” were released that he was recognized as a mainstream, country powerhouse. This song really resonated with fans; it painted the picture of a small town and life’s simple pleasures - it’s kind of like Jason Aldean’s “She’s Country” - people just loved it. Before this song, Randy was just “the guy who wrote hits for others” - not anymore!

Remember this song? “All American Girl” was Carrie’s 7th career number one, the music video was so funny too - it was about a family who hoped for boy but instead welcomed a girl who grows up to be athletic, successful, and empowered. We got to see a different side to Carrie, it wasn’t about her powerful ballads anymore - we got to laugh at her wit and enjoy a story. Some of my favorite music videos in country come from the late 2000s, and this song definitely matched the trend for creative and funny storytelling. The visual storytelling in the music video boosted the song’s popularity on Country Music Television and stayed on the Hot Country Songs chart for over 20 weeks!

It was and still is iconic…let’s go back to 2018 when Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line broke our radios with “Meant To Be” This song is one of the best-selling songs of all time, it dominated country radio, pop radio, and streaming playlists. And actually, Tyler Hubbard thought “Meant To Be” was pretty average when he wrote it Side note, it was also the first time a female debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart - and country fans were not particularly happy with a pop artist taking this win…to them, it highlighted the gender imbalance problem still present today in country radio. Bebe Rexha’s success stood out because most female country artists were struggling to get country airplay all.

Side note, there is nothing wrong with being a lesbian, but at the time, the world didn’t view same sex relationships with acceptance or kindness. The song was actually about jealousy and heartbreak, told from the perspective of a woman so obsessed with her ex’s new partner that she envies her in every way. Little Big Town says they never set out to write a scandal–just a really good heartbreak song - they did it.

And actually, the tour was famous for being “family-oriented” because they would bring their daughters on the road, and the media was very interested in how they balanced parenting with fame. Their transparency humanized them and deepened their connection to their fans. On top of that, their very visible on-stage chemistry was a hit, and fans loved seeing real-life spouses perform together. When the tour finished, it had grossed nearly $50 million, one of the biggest country tours ever at the time.
