Welcome back to MORGAN TALKS COMICS...

This week, we're looking at a small press comic MAGICAL CHARACTER RABBIT by KINOKO EVANS. a lovely little two tone comic about (no surprise) a rabbit who is a magician. This comic was gifted to me by a good friend along with other small press comics, as they know how much I love indie and small press comics.

It's a charming tale of MAGI looking for a spell for the Winter Solstice, drawn in a beautiful brush and ink style, and printer in tones of purple and orange.

We also have a lively discussion about how comics are put together, their history, and how they can be used to teach others. It's interesting to hear how two opposing views of storytelling see comics and cartoons.

Welcome back to MORGAN TALKS COMICS...

This week, we're looking at DO A POWERBOMB issue 1 by comics powerhouse DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON, published by IMAGE COMICS. This is a wonderful story set in the powerful and colourful of professional wrestling.

This is a love letter to wrestling by WARREN JOHNSON, with energetic, kinetic writing and art, packed full of emotion and energy. It's a great example of his storytelling, and was written before his amazing run on TRANSFORMERS, also published by IMAGE COMICS.

I'm a big fan of DANIEL'S work, and I think this shines through in this episode. Buckle up and tune in!

Welcome back to MORGAN TALKS COMICS.

This week (in the heat!), we are talking about HATE REVISITED by PETER BAGGE, published by my favourite comics publisher, FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS.

HATE was a cult comic in the 1990s, and FANTAGRAPHICS have been reprinting the original comics in beautiful collected editions, as well as publishing the single issues of HATE REVISITED. It's a dry, sardonic look at middle America, and the lives of middle Americans. 

I was aware of PETER BAGGE'S work at the time, but was reading more mainstream comics. These days, I prefer to read indie and small press comics, and enjoy making them too.

We also talk about my new coaching activities coming up, helping people rediscover their creativity through making comics and cartoons. ENJOY!

Welcome back to MORGAN TALKS COMICS...

This week, we're looking at WILLIAM OF NEWBURY by MICHAEL AVON OEMING, published by DARK HORSE COMICS. This is a wonderful anthropomorphic animal tale, set in 12th century England, and follow the adventures of FATHER WILLIAM, a monk from Newbury Abbey.

Father William is known for performing 'exorcisms' of ghosts and spirits, which is not looked upon fondly by the Prior of the abbey, who is more concerned with donations to the church.

It's a beautifully told tale of times gone by, and would fit in nicely in MIKE MIGNOLA'S universe - OEMING has worked with MIGNOLA on numerous occasions.

Enjoy the episode, and look out for kittens and dreaming dogs!

Welcome back to MORGAN TALKS COMICS...

This week, we're looking at "WEIRD WORK" by JORDAN THOMAS and British artist SHAKY KANE, published by IMAGE COMICS. It's a surreal detective story set in a futuristic world where anything goes.

I've been a fan of SHAKY'S work since the 80s, when he was drawing for DEADLINE, alongside other cartoonists you may just have heard of JAMIE HEWLETT and PHILIP BOND. SHAKY draws in a wonderfully nostalgic style, reminiscent of a certain JACK KIRBY.

It's a great comic, full of bright colours and clean lines... look out for kittens!

We're back... with kittens!

This week, we're looking at GEOF DARROW'S 'SHAOLIN COWBOY - CRUEL TO BE KIN' issue one from DARK HORSE COMICS. 

Darrow is one of the greatest cartoonists to be working in comics today, with his hyper detailed style of drawing, heavily influenced by Franch cartoonist MOEBIUS. (Fun fact, Geof worked in Moebuis' studio early in his career.)

Darrow is one of my favourite artists working in comics today - polar opposites in terms of style, but I love his storytelling and approach to art.

WELCOME BACK!

After an unplanned break (health issues and new kittens), we're back!

This week we're looking at DEMON WARS from MARVEL COMICS. Written and drawn by Japanese superstar PEACH MOMOKO, this is a bold retelling of Marvel characters in Japanese folklore and settings. I really love the way Peach draws, using watercolour and ink washes to create a very unique voice in today's e comic world.

We discuss Peach's meteoric rise to comic superstardom and look at the differences between Japanese and American comics - and look for guest appearances from our new kittens, Oberon and Ophelia.

Welcome back to MORGAN TALKS COMICS... 

This week we're looking at issue one of GRRRL SCOUTS - STONE GHOST by another of my comic book heroes, JIM MAHFOOD, published by IMAGE COMICS. JIM is another artist who is a BIG influence on my comic book making, weaving music and pop culture into my storytelling. 

I've been a fan of his work for a LONG time, and have a lot of his work in my collection. It's really good fun to look at one of his comics for the show, as I love the way JIM puts comics together.

We really enjoyed putting this episode together, as ASHLEY WOOD is a BIG influence on my own storytelling, and influences my own art too. I love the way he puts comics and paintings together, and have collected a lot of his work over the years.

ZOMBIES VS ROBOTS was originally published by IDW, but here ASH and CHRIS RYALL, who wrote the stories, took back the rights to the material and republished them all together in new comics, enabling readers to have all of the stories together.

There's beautiful page layout and design here, as ASH really know how to put a comic together - did I mention I REALLY like his work?

We also talk about my earlier career as a Graphic Designer, as it seemed like a more practical option than being a cartoonist when I was twelve... I still drew cartoons when I worked in design studios!

Short but sweet this week - it's definitely quality over quantity!

This week, we're looking at STARSHIP GODZILLA, a new title from IDW, and one of three new GODZILLA titles they started publishing last year. It's a great, fast paced crime caper set on the skeleton of MECHA GODZILLA, who has been turned into a starship, crewed by a bunch of lovable space crooks.

We're looking at issue one, the start of the whole story, and a real scene setter, introducing the cast and tone of the stories. 

Also listen out for Eliza-Mariah being a bit cheeky this week as Morgan tries to hold the show together... Enjoy!

ALL CHANGE!

This week, Eliza-Mariah is in the driving seat, having done the research and chosen the comic we are looking at: SUPERGIRL - THE WORLD, a new FREE title from DC COMICS, published on SUPERGIRL DAY, which is tying in with the new SUPERGIRL film opening in June. 

This is a taster of a new graphic novel that is coming out soon, with creative teams from around the globe, focusing on female artists and writers.

We talk about SUPERGIRL and SUPERMAN too, how the characters are changing with the times, and which versions we like too!

This week, we're looking at a great indie comic, EVERYTHING SUCKS, by MICHAEL SWEATER - published by SILVER SPROCKET. It's a funny look at life from the slacker side of things, and what can happen if there are too many cats around!

We also have a really good conversation about comics in general, and how they can be used as resources in improving literacy. We talk a lot about 'slice of life' comics, and how the indie comics scene tells stories at a much slower pace.

Welcome back to Morgan Talks Comics, a podcast about comics old and new.

This week, I'm looking at one of my favourite comics of all time, DWELLINGS, by Jay STEPHENS, published by BLACK EYE BOOKS. It's really beautiful slice of 'cute' horror, intended for an older audience. Jay draws in a wonderful cartoon style with a very dark edge to it... these aren't kids comics!

I love Jay's work, as he is a very big influence on my drawing and storytelling, using traditional cartoon style with a darker tone to the stories. His attention to detail in storytelling and how it is presented is incredible and meticulously done.

This week, we're looking at a real British institution, The Beano, which has been in publication since 1938!

There's a deep dive into British comic history, as this is where my love of the history of comics and cartoons really started. You can hear about how this started when I was little.

This is also our longest episode so far, at over an hour long - we talk a lot about The Beano and how well established and respected it is, nearly 100 years after it started.

Welcome to Morgan Talks Comics - you might notice the name change, which I will be bringing in soon, as the show has become more about talking about comics and their history, rather than just focusing on cult comics. I love comics of all shapes and sizes, so the show name will change to reflect that.

This week, I'm talking bit the great British comic, 2000ad, which is coming up to being 50 years old, a remarkable feat in publishing, let alone in comics. I've been reading 2000ad on and off since I was about 10, and it was the first comic that really grabbed my attention, and made me want to be a cartoonist - I have had artwork published in 2000ad!

This week, I'm looking at an issue/prog from last week, and I'll be retrospectively looking at some older issues in future episodes to see how 2000ad has changed over the years. Joining me again is Eliza-Mariah Chamberlain.

Welcome to Morgan's Cult Comics... a deep dive into comics from the past and the present. I really love comics, and I hope this comes through in the conversations that take place for this show.

This week, I'm looking at a brand new comic, D'ORC created by cartoonist Brett Bean, and published by Image Comics. It's a great funny fantasy comic, similar in tone to Skottie Young's I HEART FAIRYLAND, on which Brett was also an artist. 

Expect lots of fightin', gallons of gravy, and a shield who just wants VIOLENCE!

NB: I mistakenly thought Brett was originally from the UK, but he is actually American - as I mention his nationality in this episode. (I got him mixed up with cartoonist Brett Parsons - who IS from the UK, and also has work published by IMAGE COMICS.)

I’m looking at a newer comic, PEEPEE POOPOO number one written and drawn by rising star Caroline Cash and published by Silver Sprocket, a great queer comics publisher based in San Francisco. This was first published in 2024, and has already had a second printing, proving how popular Cash is becoming.

This week, we're looking at 'Ten Thousand Plums' part 1 of 5, published last year, and the most recent Usagi Yojimbo story from master cartoonist Stan Sakai. We talk about the changes between issue 5 of Usagi from last episode to this issue, now in full colour.

This week I’m taking a dive into one of my cult favourites from the mid to late 80s, Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters. I was really into small press and indie comics during the 80s and 90s (I still am), so any new oddball titles and covers caught my eye. I would got to the comic shop every weekend, and scour the racks for cool, unusual stuff.
