EP#264: Judgement Day Aboard the USS Sulaco - An Interview with Jenette Goldstein27 Jun 202400:55:51

Join Justin as he chats with actor Jenette Goldstein about bad experiences on bad movies, the thrill of performing live, Near Dark, working with James Cameron, her new business, and more!

Jenette Goldstein bio:

"Jenette Goldstein is a true chameleon. She is so effective as an actress, it is nearly impossible to recognize her from role to role. Jenette spent most of her childhood in Los Angeles. Born to theater-loving parents, she attended fine arts-oriented schools, and was the young star of the drama classes. She often competed in citywide drama competitions with soon-to-be famous peers
Val Kilmer, Gina Gershon, Kevin Spacey and Mare Winningham. To hone her craft after high school, Jenette studied at London's Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, and at Circle in the Square Theater in New York City, mastering drama theory, physicality, dialects and the classics. It was in London, while performing in local theater productions, where Jenette answered an audition request for American actors with British Equity cards. Thinking it was another play or a small film, she read for a tough, macho Latina character, named 'Vasquez' And shot to fame in James Cameron's iconic film Aliens. Cameron was so pleased with Jenette's creativity and strong work ethic, he recast her as 'Janelle' in Terminator 2: Judgment Day and a cameo role as the loving 'Irish Mother' in the epic Titanic.

Her resume is testament to her range and versatility: Vampy killer Diamondback in
Near Dark, good cop Meagan Shapiro in Lethal Weapon 2, Patti Jean Lynch in The Presidio, Alice the Maid in a one-scene role in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, etc.

In addition to film, Jenette has made several appearances on the small screen. She guest-starred on such award-winning shows as
Six Feet Under, L.A. Law, Strong Medicine and ER - where she guest-starred on the 100th anniversary show as a grieving mother, and in a separate episode opposite Anthony Edwards, as a heroic flight nurse. It was only after Jenette was hired for the second role that the show's producers realized she had done the show before.

Jenette has continued working in theater throughout her career, appearing in plays in New York, London and Los Angeles. She has performed the classics,
William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night," to more contemporary pieces, such as Arthur Miller's "After The Fall," which won the 2002 Los Angeles Ovation Award for Best Production. Currently, Jenette is excited about her latest creation: a one-woman show she is writing herself."

EP#172: Night of the Evil Dead - An Interview with Patricia Tallman15 Feb 202301:01:15

Join Justin as he chats with actor and author Patricia Tallman about creativity, the supernatural, magic, movies, Deadites, time travel, literature, and more!

Patricia Tallman bio:

"When she portrayed "Lyta Alexander" in the Hugo Award-winning sci-fi series Babylon 5, Patricia Tallman was the most powerful telepath in the universe. Seems fitting, considering that the actress knew she was going to be in show business at the early age of two. It was then that she first appeared with her father, Jerry, on his Midwest radio show, soloing on "Bicycle Built for Two".

By age 15, Pat was performing in summer stock at the Red Barn Theatre in Saugatuck, Michigan, doing ten shows in 11 weeks. She soon spent all of her high school vacations in professional summer stock, and eventually chose Carnegie Mellon University to earn a BFA in its prestigious theater arts program. While other theater majors waited tables, Pat worked her way through college, performing in eighteen musicals at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera. Recognizing Pat's formidable talents, CMU presented her with an award for Outstanding Achievement in Acting.

Immediately after college, Pat moved to New York City, where she landed a role in the long-running off-Broadway hit "Big, Bad Burlesque". She went on to score other parts on the New York stage, including her favorite, "Rosalind" in the Riverside Shakespeare Company's production of "As You Like It". Television roles began shortly thereafter, when Pat was cast in a recurring role on the CBS soap opera,
Guiding Light. This led to roles on virtually every New York-based daytime serial. Film roles were not far behind. George A. Romero contacted her to play a role in his feature Knightriders, starring Ed Harris. This led to a long working relationship with him.

Pat relocated to Los Angeles , where she again worked with Romero on
Creepshow 2. The film she is perhaps best known for followed: George Romero and Tom Savini's remake of the 1968 cult classic, Night of the Living Dead. The move to L.A. was a smart one, Pat discovered, as she was soon cast as undercover cop "Christy Russell" on NBC's Generations, and as an evil, sexy swashbuckler in the Ring of the Musketeers. Other films include Sweet Justice, Benefit of the Doubt, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Television shows include Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Runner (A USA Network pilot), Dark Skies, Babylon 5 and "The Universe and Harry Morgann" (an independent pilot).

Pat's other projects include starring in the science-fiction thriller
Never Die Twice and playing one of the leads, Lt. Richmond, in two audio plays, "Lives of the Cat" and "Anne Manx". In addition, her voice can be heard in the cartoon "Babylon 5" parodies Babylon Park: Frightspace and Grudge Match. Equally important to Patricia are her roles of mother to son her Julian, as well as her fund-raising activities for the children of Penny Lane.

Through her tireless efforts within the science fiction community, Pat and her fans have contributed more than $250,000 to Penny Lane over the past several years, the bulk of which transformed the CARE Computer Lab dream into reality. Since 1996, Pat, her friends, family and fans have made a holiday happen for the Penny Lane kids, through the Be A Santa program.

Dedicated Patricia Tallman fans make a hobby of trying to spot her in her many stunt performances. An extremely athletic and former fearless member of the Stunt Woman's Association of Motion Pictures, Pat has tumbled, slid and taken punches for the likes of
Laura Dern (in Jurassic Park), Gates McFadden (in "Star Trek: Generations"), Geena Davis (in The Long Kiss Goodnight) and Laura Prepon (in Karla).

Pat's roots as a stage actress have never left her, and she continues to tread the footlights in Los Angeles whenever film and TV work allow her the time. Her latest projects include
Dead Air, a psychological horror film directed by Corbin Bernsen, for which her performance is getting great reviews. Pat has a book out "Pleasure Thresholds, Patricia Tallman's Babylon 5 Memoirs".

In his early acting years, Davi attended Hofstra University on a drama scholarship. Davi became a lifetime member of the Actors Studio, where he studied with acting teacher Lee Strasberg. Always perfecting his craft, Davi studied under Sandra Seacat, Larry Moss, Milton Katselas, Martin Landau, Mala Powers and George Shdanoff, the creative partner and collaborator with Michael Chekhov.

Robert Davi was born in Astoria, Queens, to Maria (Rulli) and Sal Davi. His father was an Italian immigrant and his mother was of Italian descent. Davi was introduced to film when he was cast opposite Frank Sinatra in the telefilm, "Contract on Cherry Street." Later, his work as a Palestinian terrorist in the award-winning television movie, "Terrorist on Trial: The United States vs. Salim Ajami" brought him critical acclaim and caught the eye of legendary James Bond producer Albert R. Broccoli and writer Richard Maibaum, who cast Davi as Colombian drug lord and lead villain Franz Sanchez in the Bond film "License to Kill." Today, Davi is one of the top Bond villains of all time ranking at the top on many lists. In October of 2011, Davi released his debut album, Davi Sings Sinatra: On the Road to Romance (produced by Grammy award-winning producer Phil Ramone) to rave reviews. Within weeks of its highly anticipated release, the album soared onto Billboard Magazine's Top 10 Jazz Chart taking the number 6 spot for several weeks. In response to the release, the legendary Quincy Jones stated, "As FS would say, 'Koo, Koo.' Wow! I have never heard anyone come this close to Sinatra's sound - and still be himself. Many try, but Robert Davi has the voice, tone, the flavor and the swagger. What a surprise. He absolutely touched me down to my soul and brought back the essence and soul of Ol' Blue Eyes himself." In support of the album release, Davi is touring the U.S. with his live stage show, receiving standing ovations. He has performed at The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas for a three-night engagement, the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza with a 55-piece orchestra, the National Italian-American Foundation's (NIAF) special tribute to the 25th anniversary of its Lifetime Achievement Award to Frank Sinatra at the Washington Hilton in D.C., the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, Calif., with David Foster at the Beverly Hilton, and in August of 2013, at Long Island's Eisenhower Park for more than 10,000 people. EP#167: Killing Giggles - An Interview with Jaysen Buterin21 Jan 202301:03:58

Join Justin as he chats with writer and filmmaker Jaysen Buterin about killing clowns, literature, sneaking into concerts, looking like Jesus, creativity, horror, Giggles, and more!

Jaysen Buterin bio:

"As Creative Director of Greensboro, NC's straight jacket-tested/doctor-approved Mad Ones Films, Jaysen Buterin has devoted himself to showing the unbridled kaleidoscopic creativity just waiting to be unleashed when the inmates are finally allowed to run the cinematic asylum. Since 2006, he has specialised in creating character-focused, dialogue-driven genre-juggling independent short films including everything from Faustian rock & roll thrillers ("The Devil's Tramping Ground") to dark deadly comedies ("The Decapitator") to femme fatale fantasy ("Flipper Stripper Vixens at the Inferno A-Go-Go!") and more!

Buterin spent four years writing, directing and masterminding the epic short film trilogy, "The Gospel According to Booze, Bullets & Hot Pink Jesus." Initially released as three separate short films - allowing viewers to literally watch the movie as it was being made - this multiple award-winning set of sinful stories is a "Twilight Zone meets Tarantino" thrill ride, a Shakespearean spaghetti western that will serenade your brain and ride off into the sunset with your heart.

Once the HPJ Trilogy was completed, Jaysen turned his attention to a full slate of projects both behind, and in front of, the camera. Having filmed supporting roles in Brett Mullen's Italian-style zombie splatter film, "Bombshell Bloodbath" and the end of the world killer comedy, "Fix It In Post," from Adrenalin Productions, Jaysen also acted alongside the legendary Judith O'Dea in Matt Cloude's reimagining of the cult classic, "Night of the Living Dead: Genesis." He's also been seen onscreen in award-winning short films such as "Knob Goblins," "Loop," "Born Again," "Mama's Boy" and "Identity Thieves," just to name a few.

More comfortable behind the camera, Buterin jumped back in the writer/director's chair for his next four award-winning projects. The terrifying tale of revenge from beyond the grave known "Between Hell and a Hard Place," was followed by the thrilling and chilling short, "Don't Let the Light In." After that was the sinister short film, "The Corner," which showed that sometimes, just sometimes, home is where the horror is! He's currently in pre-production on his very first feature-length film, the coulrophobia-courting/clown killing goodness of "Kill Giggles."

Bobby Darin, Gene Vincent and Danny and the Juniors. Chris later attended West Virginia University majoring in speech, but appearing in such musical productions as "The Music Man" as Harold Hill. He went on to attend the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, where he received his master's degree in theater and met first wife Susan Sarandon. They married in 1967.

Touring with improv companies and in regional theater productions, he made his professional debut in "The Rose Tattoo" in 1965 and later joined the Long Wharf Theatre Company for a season. The Sarandons moved to New York in 1968, wherein the dark and handsome charmer immediately nabbed the role of Dr. Tom Halverson on the daytime soap
Guiding Light, a part that would last two years. Throughout the 1970s he would be rewarded with rich theater acting roles. On Broadway he appeared in "The Rothchilds" and replaced Raul Julia in "Two Gentlemen from Verona" while appearing elsewhere in various Shakespeare and Shaw festivals both here and in Canada.

Chris made a phenomenally successful film debut in a huge, career-risking part as bank robber's
Al Pacino's tormented, gender-confused lover in Dog Day Afternoon, earning the New York Film Critics award and Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for his supporting turn. He took other sordid roles as well, this time in co-leads, such as opposite Margaux Hemingway in the poorly received exploitative thriller Lipstick and as a demon in the shocker The Sentinel. To avoid being typed as creepy characters, Chris furthered his range of roles in years to come, including the title role in The Day Christ Died, a critically heralded TV-movie. He then received high marks also for his mesmerizing interpretation of two completely different characters with unique subtlety, intelligence, charisma and profoundness as both Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay in A Tale of Two Cities and co-starred with Goldie Hawn in the more mainstream Protocol. By the end of the 1970's, he and Susan would divorce and he would remarry (model Lisa Ann Cooper).

Moving into 80s work, Chris endeared himself to a younger generation of film goers with memorable performances in enjoyable roles such as the undeniably sexy, magnetic vampire-next-door in the teen horror classic
Fright Night, the cruel, evil-plotting prince in Rob Reiner's The Princess Bride and as the investigating cop in Child's Play, the first in the "Chucky" series about a murdering doll. In recent years Chris has continued steadily on stage, film and TV but at a lesser pace and in less flashy, high-profiled roles.

In 1991 he co-starred on Broadway in the short-lived musical "Nick and Nora" with
Joanna Gleason, the daughter of Monty Hall (Let's Make a Deal). Again divorced, he and Gleason married in 1994 and reunited on stage in "Thorn & Bloom" in 1998. They have also appeared together in a number of films, including American Perfekt, Edie & Pen and Let the Devil Wear Black. He found frightful fun and a major cartoon niche as the voice of Jack Skellington in the original Disney movie The Nightmare Before Christmas, reprising the role in sequels, video games and Halloween special events.

Into the millennium, Chris' focus has been more on Broadway and off-Broadway theatre with flavorful roles in "The Light in the Piazza," "Cyrano de Bergerac," "Through a Glass Darkly and "The Exonerated." In the 2015 production of "Preludes," he played multiple roles that included Chekhov, Tchaikovsky and Tolstoy. He has also sporadically appeared in films with featured parts in
Perfume, Loggerheads, My Sassy Girl, a cameo as a vampire victim in a remake of Fright Night, Safe and Frank the Bastard, Big Stone Gap and I Smile Back. He has also uplifted a number of popular TV shows with his presence: "ER," "Charmed," "Cold Case," "Judging Amy," "Law and Order," "The Good Wife," "Orange Is the New Black" and as the voice of Dracula in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."

Rob Wiethoff bio:

"Robert Allen Wiethoff (born September 15, 1976) is an American actor and voice actor. He is best known for portraying John Marston in the 2010 video game Red Dead Redemption, its expansion Undead Nightmare, and the 2018 prequel Red Dead Redemption 2. Born and raised in Seymour, Indiana, Wiethoff attended Seymour High School, and graduated from Indiana University Bloomington in 1999. Soon afterwards, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting, but faced difficulty in finding roles, other than small parts in films and television advertisements. In 2008, Rockstar Games cast Wiethoff as John Marston, the lead character in Red Dead Redemption; he worked on the game for almost two years. For his role, he won Outstanding Character Performance at the 14th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards.

Following the release of Red Dead Redemption, Wiethoff moved back to Seymour to focus on his family, marrying his wife Tayler, with whom he has two children. He briefly returned to acting in New York City for Undead Nightmare, the downloadable content pack for Red Dead Redemption, but remained in Seymour afterwards to work in construction, allowing him to spend time with his family. In 2014, Wiethoff returned to portray John Marston in Red Dead Redemption 2, a prequel to the original game. Though he was told that he would be required for about a year, he ultimately worked on the game for almost four years, as his role was expanded to become a playable character like the first game; Red Dead Redemption 2 was released in 2018."

EP#156: Of Swords and Sorceries - An Interview with Richard Stanley07 Nov 202200:52:42

Join Justin as he chats with filmmaker Richard Stanley about Solomon Kane, H.P. Lovecraft, the Holy Grail, Frank Frazetta, magic, mythos, film, fiction, monsters, and more!

Richard Stanley bio:

"Richard Stanley is the award-winning South African-born filmmaker, who made a name of himself with his first feature film, the sci-fi movie
Hardware. A low budget movie about a mad-dog android loose in an apartment was released in 1990. Critics slammed it as a Terminator rip-off, yet the film became a financial success. The 1.5 million dollar budget was paid back quite handsomely and continuation was imminent.

In 1992, Stanley followed Hardware with
Dust Devil, a story based on the myth of a Namibian serial killer. A fallout with the distributors led to the re-cutting of the US version, while the bankruptcy of the British-based production company Palace Pictures temporarily shut the post-production down in Europe and the film remained mauled or unfinished, depending how you look at it. Finally Stanley himself managed to finance a new, restored print from the original negative, which has later gained a cult following similar to Hardware.

His third feature was to be
The Island of Dr. Moreau, an adaptation of the famed H.G. Wells novel. Unfortunately it ended up a victim of creative disputes, leading to him being sacked a few days after production began. The finished film, released in 1996, carries little to no resemblance to the version he was originally set to make, using only about two words of his original script.

This, however, hasn't beaten the visionary filmmaker down and horror movie fans are now waiting for him to come back... with a one mean vengeance."

Jeff Kober bio:

"Jeff Kober was born in Billings, Montana, on 18 December, 1953. Not satisfied with being a rancher, Kober relocated to the L.A. area in his twenties with the desire to become an actor. His first appearance on the small screen was a non-billed role in the 1980s series V. Kober went on to supporting roles in the highly acclaimed Vietnam War drama China Beach and the short-lived, but now-cult horror series Kindred: The Embraced. Following these series, Kober has guested on some of the most popular television series of the day. They include Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, ER, 24, The Closer, and Criminal Minds.

Kober's big screen career began with the film
Out of Bounds, in which he played the first of his signature nefarious characters - Roy Gaddis, a small-time drug dealer with murderous inclinations. This role led to more film opportunities in The First Power, Tank Girl (a comedic turn), Defining Maggie, World Without Waves, and the remake of The Hills Have Eyes 2, among others. Never one to balk at taking a chance in the acting field, Kober has also appeared in several short independent films - the Academy Award-winning Session Man and, most recently, Lucid, another film that has garnered a number of awards at independent film festivals across the country.

He has done extensive stage work, most prominently, as "the father" in Jenny Sullivan's autobiographical work "J For J" and "Defying Gravity". Being a creature of diverse talents, Kober is also a noted artist (he was responsible for the paintings attributed to his character Daedalus on Kindred: The Embraced and is the c/o author of "Art That Pays: The Emerging Artist's Guide to Making a Living" along with Adele Slaughter. On the personal front, Kober is twice divorced (Rhonda Talbot, Kelly Cutrone) and the father of one son. He has, at present, finished work on The Hills Have Eyes 2 (set for release in March 2007) in the role of Colonel Lincoln Redding. Kober's next film was Multiple."

Ben plays hapless OrgoCorp Security Guard 'Bletelsnort' opposite Guardians 'Mantis' (Pom Klementieff) and 'Drax' (Dave Bautista). GOTG Vol. 3 was released on May 5, 2023 by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and earned $289 million globally on opening weekend.

In the can is a starring role in the "Borderlands" feature film, which is Lionsgate, Eli Roth and Tim Miller's eagerly anticipated adaptation of the uber successful video game. Ben plays Pandora's arms dealer 'Marcus Kincaid,' opposite Cate Blanchett's infamous outlaw 'Lilith.' An important character within the Borderlands universe, 'Marcus' is a weapons dealer and entrepreneur who appears in all the main Borderlands video games. He is known for his gruff demeanor, sharp wit, distinctive accent, penchant for telling tall tales about his past exploits and willingness to do whatever it takes to make a profit. Borderlands is one of the world's most successful game franchises, with more than 68 million units sold-in worldwide and includes "Borderlands 2" which is the highest-selling title in the history of 2K; and "Borderlands 3," which was awarded Best Ongoing Game at Gamescom 2020.

In the arena of performance capture, Ben created the iconic character of 'Dutch van der Linde,' the complex, compelling and charismatic gang leader in Rockstar Games's Red Dead Redemption (2010) and Red Dead Redemption II (2018). The character of 'Dutch' was described by Twinfinite as "one of the greatest villains of this generation," and they selected Ben as the "Best Actor of 2018." "Red Dead Redemption II" upon release had the largest opening weekend in the history of entertainment generating $725 million in revenue in 3 days and (as of May 2023) is the 8th highest grossing video game of all time!

In recent film performances, Ben played 'Agent Burleigh' in Marvel's "Ant-Man and the Wasp" opposite Paul Rudd and Randall Park; and 'Antonio Fowler' in the action/horror/thriller "The Belko Experiment," written and produced by James Gunn. A veteran of over thirty episodes of television, Ben has delivered memorable comedic and dramatic turns in series roles.

Ben was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the youngest of three brothers. His parents are retired, Jessica from teaching and William from finance. Ben graduated from the Noble and Greenough School (MA), where he was awarded the Eaton Prize for Excellence in Performing Arts, went on to attend the University of Chicago where he sat on the board of the University Theatre, and finally to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts where he graduated with honors and a Playwrights Horizons Theatre School "Achievement in Acting" award (1996).

His early work in theater featured two solo shows that he wrote and performed: "In Absentia" (HERE, NYC, 1995 and The Evidence Room, LA, 2001); and "Big Shot" (Lillian Theater, LA, 2002 and Trilogy Theater, NYC, 2002). Ben has appeared in numerous stage roles, including 'Lord Byron' in "Bloody Poetry" (nyte/Classic Stage Company, NYC, 1998) and 'Woland' in "The Master and Margarita" (Zoo District/Hudson Backstage, LA, 2000).

Directing in theater, Ben's projects have included the one-act play "Godfather Death" (Sacred Fools Theater Company, 2001/LA Weekly Award nomination for best director) and the development and direction of acclaimed poet/performer Joe Hernandez-Kolski's solo shows."

EP#145: Beneath the Tar - An Interview with Allan Trautman05 Aug 202200:40:17

Join Justin as he chats with actor and puppeteer Allan Trautman about the Tarman, Return of the Living Dead, Jim Henson, puppetry, Dinosaurs, and more!

Allan Trautman bio:

"Allan Trautman was born in Brooklyn, NY and moved to Miami Beach with his family at the beginning of 9th grade. He began acting in Miami Beach Senior High under the direction of famed drama teacher Jay Jensen. He spent four years in St. Louis at Washington University, earning a BA in Physics and Drama. He then earned an MFA in Acting from the California Institute of the Arts, where he met his wife, Diane. While in St. Louis, he began his puppetry career working on The Letter People at public TV station KETC. He performed in all 60 15-minute episodes, each one shot on a Friday (he skipped classes).

Two years after graduating from CalArts, while working full-time at Leo's Stereo in the San Fernando Valley, a friend told him about an audition notice for a "puppet school" sponsored by Sid and Marty Krofft. Allan spent the summer of 1980 at what were a series of workshops under the direction of Tony Urbano. There he met other young puppeteers who all became lifelong friends-Bruce Lanoil, Kevin Carlson, Tim Blaney, and others.

Much of the 1980s were spent working on projects for the Kroffts and for Dave Pavelonis and his Peppercorn Productions, as well as pursuing his acting career. During this time he was sent on an audition for Return of the Living Dead, and was cast as the Tarman, who went on to become an iconic zombie film character-among the first to ask specifically for "Brains!"

In 1990, as part of the then-pending purchase of The Muppets by the Walt Disney Company, Jim Henson came to Los Angeles to direct Muppetvision 3-D, an attraction for Disney's theme parks. Again, a friend was able to get Allan into the audition, and this was the beginning of Allan's career with The Jim Henson Company and the Muppets.

In 1991 Allan joined the cast of the ABC-TV series Dinosaurs as the animatronic puppeteer for Fran Sinclair. That show remained in production for 65 episodes, until the end of 1993, introducing Allan to sophisticated animatronics. This experience continued with movies like Babe, Men in Black, Doctor Dolittle, Jack Frost, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, Monkeybone, Cats and Dogs, Men in Black II, and The Country Bears.

After Dinosaurs, two producers on that show requested his presence on their next show, Unhappily Ever After, a sitcom on the brand-new WB Network. Allan puppeteered Mr. Floppy, the lead character's wise-cracking (imaginary) talking bunny, voiced in front of a live audience by Bobcat Goldthwaite.

In the meantime, Allan's work with The Muppets included videos such as It's Not Easy Being Green and Muppet Classic Theatre, the movie Muppets from Space, and, for TV, Muppets Tonight, It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, and The Muppets' Wizard of Oz. In the summer of 2005, Allan became a founding member of Puppet Up!-Uncensored, Henson Alternative's puppet/improv show. He performed in the show off-Broadway, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, on tour throughout the U.S., and on the historic Chaplin Stage on The Jim Henson Company lot. He also acted as puppetry technique instructor. He was one of three on-set puppeteers during production of The Jungle Book (2016), and was a core puppeteer on The Happytime Murders. Allan continues to work in physical as well as digital puppetry, in shows such as Splash and Bubbles for PBS Kids, and has moved into directing for that show and others."

EP#261: Ride of the Roughneck - An Interview with Michael Ironside04 Jun 202401:13:32

Join Justin as he chats with actor and filmmaker Michael Ironside about growing up in poverty, living with impostor syndrome, Scanners, spiritual experiences, Sam Fisher, life after death, and more!

Michael Ironside bio:

"Michael Ironside has made a strong and indelible impression with his often incredibly intense and explosive portrayals of fearsome villains throughout the years. He was born as Frederick Reginald Ironside on February 12, 1950 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Ironside was a successful arm wrestler in his teenage years. His initial ambition was to be a writer. At age fifteen, Michael wrote a play called "The Shelter" that won first prize in a Canada-wide university contest; He used the prize money to mount a production of this play. Ironside attended the Ontario College of Art, took acting lessons from Janine Manatis, and studied for three years at the Canadian National Film Board. Ironside worked in construction as a roofer prior to embarking on an acting career.

Ironside first began acting in movies in the late 1970s. He received plenty of recognition with his frightening turn as deadly and powerful psychic Darryl Revok in
David Cronenberg's Scanners. He was likewise very chilling as vicious misogynistic psychopath Colt Hawker in the underrated Visiting Hours. Other memorable film roles include weary Detective Roersch in the sadly forgotten thriller Cross Country, the crazed Overdog in the immensely enjoyable Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone, the hard-nosed Jester in the blockbuster smash Top Gun, ramrod Major Paul Hackett in Extreme Prejudice, loner Vietnam veteran "Ben" in Nowhere to Hide, the ferocious Lem Johnson in Watchers, and lethal immortal General Katana in Highlander II: The Quickening.

Moreover, Ironside has appeared in two highly entertaining science fiction features for
Paul Verhoeven: At his savage best as the evil Richter in Total Recall and typically excellent as the rugged Lieutenant Jean Rasczak in Starship Troopers. Ironside showed a more tender and thoughtful side with his lovely and touching performance as a hardened convict who befriends a disabled man in the poignant indie drama gem Chaindance; he also co-wrote the script and served as an executive producer for this beautiful sleeper. Michael was terrific as tough mercenary Ham Tyler on the epic miniseries V, its follow up V: The Final Battle, and subsequent short-lived spin-off series.

Ironside also had a recurring role on the television series
SeaQuest 2032. Among the television series he has done guest spots on are The A-Team, Hill Street Blues, The New Mike Hammer, The Hitchhiker, Tales from the Crypt, Superman: The Animated Series, Walker, Texas Ranger, The Outer Limits, ER, Smallville, ER, Desperate Housewives, Justice League and Masters of Horror. More recently, Ironside garnered a slew of plaudits and a Gemini Award nomination for his outstanding portrayal of shrewd biker gang leader Bob Durelle in the acclaimed Canadian miniseries The Last Chapter II: The War Continues.

In addition to his substantial film and television work, Ironside has also lent his distinctive deep voice to TV commercials and video games."

EP#143: Hoist the Colors - An Interview with Lee Arenberg20 Jul 202200:47:33

Join Justin as he chats with veteran stage and screen actor Lee Arenberg about pirates, Pintel, filming abroad, character acting, Once Upon A Time, and more!

Lee Arenberg bio:

"Lee Arenberg has the remarkable ability to morph himself into frightening aliens, twisted psychotherapists, lascivious entertainment executives and everything in between. Most frequently referred to as a character actor, Arenberg maintains a flourishing acting career--almost 20 years spanning television, stage and film. Arenberg has appeared in more than 30 movies, including Cradle Will Rock, RoboCop 3, Waterworld, Bob Roberts, The Apocalypse, Cross My Heart and the fantasy adventure feature Dungeons & Dragons.

Bitten by the acting bug at age eight when he portrayed David in his Hebrew school play, "Killing Goliath", Arenberg notes that the parable "could be the title of any actor's chances in this game." A native Angeleno, Lee attended Santa Monica high school with "brat packers"
Sean Penn, Robert Downey Jr. and Emilio Estevez, and co-wrote a play with Estevez which was directed by Penn. Lee's first professional job was in 1986 at the Mark Taper Forum in "Ghetto", a play directed by Gordon Davidson. Within weeks he was cast in three films, including the role of Norton in the feature Tapeheadsopposite Tim Robbins and John Cusack.

Guest appearances on television began in 1987 with the hit sitcom
Perfect Strangers, and have continued with memorable roles such as the parking space-stealing New Yorker on Seinfeld and as the murderous rock promoter opposite Katey Sagal and Sam Kinison in Tales from the Crypt, as well as roles on Arli$$, Friends, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.

Arenberg can also be seen in the role of the notoriously huge studio head, Bobby G., on the controversial syndicated comedy
Action opposite series star Jay Mohr. Arenberg names his family and friends as his inspirations, and states that having grown up on Los Angeles' Westside, he was able to see actors as the parents of friends and classmates, not as just as movie stars. "It also gave me an honest assessment of the industry and what I was getting myself into," he laughs.

He credits "fear of failure" as his main motivation, and admires the talents and creativity of such legendary actors
Paul Muni, Lon Chaney and Boris Karloff. Lee also credits much of his development as an actor to his participation in the Actors' Gang, one of Los Angeles' oldest theater companies. The Actors' Gang was founded by Lee in 1981 with Tim Robbins and other friends from UCLA. After 20 years as an actor in the group, Lee recently made his writing and directing debut with Foursome, a play about golf, sex and witchcraft.

In his leisure time, Arenberg enjoys golf, cooking, blues harmonica, video games and pitching for his softball team Bubblin' Crude, which is made up of other actors, many of whom are friends from high school.

He is involved with St. Jude's Children's Hospital and other children's health causes, and animal rights organizations, participating regularly in fund raising efforts on behalf of those charitable causes."

EP#141: Bathed in Blood and Shadow - An Interview with Anders Hove07 Jul 202200:30:00

Join Justin as he chats with horror icon Anders Hove about becoming Radu Vladislas, growing up in Greenland, theater, drunken sword fights, Romania, and the fate of Subspecies 5!

Anders Hove bio:

"Anders Hove was born in Greenland on the 16th of January 1956 to a mother who was a nurse and a father who worked as a meteorologist. His father was politically involved in Greenland and helped the country work towards the government it has today. Spending most of his childhood there, Anders later moved with his parents to Thisted in Denmark when he was 14 years old. In the 1970s, Anders attended the Royal Academy in Denmark to learn formal acting. Before this he had studied law and economics and had planned on taking over his father's business. In 1980, he married an American dancer and choreographer named Ann Thayer Crosset, and they have two sons together, Anders Ezra and Elliot Todd.

His first real movie role was in the Danish movie
In the Middle of the Night (Middle of the Night), in which he played Nalle. After working in Denmark for a time as a stage and screen actor, Anders decided to try his luck on the American front. He and his wife sold their belongings and moved to the States. There he landed parts in shows like "Tales From the Crypt" and the sci-fi movie Critters 4 as 'Rick', the critter-infested ships captain, and the role that many know and remember him for, as the fiendish and obsessive 'Cesar Faison' on the daytime soap opera "General Hospital". He also worked in a Canadian soap opera called "Family Passions" with General Hospital co-star and friend Kin Shriner. Another former co-star on General Hospital, Michael Watson suggested that Anders should play the villainous vampire 'Radu Vladislas' in the Full Moon movie Subspecies. He ended up being in three sequels to the movie during the 90s playing the long-fingered, drooling, infamous Radu. Hove returned to Denmark in the mid 90s and has continued to act there, being a favorite actor of the 'Dogme'-directors, usually playing bad guys."

EP#140: Aliens and Shakespeare - An Interview with Brian Thompson02 Jul 202201:00:20

Join Justin, Daniel, and Angelique as they chat with veteran stage and screen actor Brian Thompson about literature, the stage, screen writing red flags, Mortal Kombat, method acting, and more!

Brian Thompson bio:

"Brian Earl Thompson was born on August 28, 1959 in Ellensburg, Washington. Raised on the Columbia River in Longview, he learned the value of academics and athletics, as the son of two teachers and the second of six siblings. His interest in acting was first sparked during his senior year of high school with the role of the Russian ballet instructor, Boris Kolenkhov, in the comedy "You Can't Take it With You". Under the pretense of attending Central Washington University to play football and study business management, he quietly auditioned for every available play, treading the boards for a dozen school productions, from musicals and operas to the more lighthearted fare of Neil Simon.

Earning a scholarship to the University of California-Irvine, he sailed through a three-year Master of Fine Arts program, learning from such theatrical luminaries as playwright
Edward Albee, Robert Cohen and Jerzy Grotoswski, and supplementing his education through work with the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. He began to audition theatrically before graduation, and by that time, he had his SAG card, an agent and five professional credits, including James Cameron's The Terminator, where he and Bill Paxton's clothes were forcibly removed by a naked Arnold Schwarzenegger. About a year after Arnold took Brian's clothes, Sylvester Stallone wanted a hack at Brian as well. After seven auditions and a screen test, Brian earned the right to get impaled on a meat hook, then burned alive, Stallone's Cobra. This began a string of credits that has left Thompson in and around some of Hollywood's biggest and most projects.

Brian has tackled two superhero roles as well: first, Conan the Librarian (1999), starring red in the title role, a PBS special to encourage kids to read. He also earned critical acclaim playing the larger-than-life role of Hercules in
Jason and the Argonauts. Probably the first role that demanded use of his classical background as well as his 6' 3" muscled frame. Brian says that no gym can claim him as a member, and that his physique is kept honed by years of windsurfing and kitesurfing. Taking a curiously "musical" approach to his craft, the actor continually seeks fresh rhythms for each new role. Brian verifies his well-rounded nature with a resume that lists such special skills as martial arts (black belt Hapkido), piano and sushi rolling. He currently resides at home with his son Jordan and daughter Daphne."

EP#136: Maestro on Elm Street - An Interview with Charles Bernstein14 May 202201:02:18

Join Justin, Daniel, and Angelique as they chat with legendary film composer Charles Bernstein about the Elm Street franchise, the early days of composition, underground Jazz clubs in France, navigating the industry, and more!

Charles Bernstein bio:

Talented, prolific and versatile film composer Charles Bernstein was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

His family moved to Los Angeles when he was young, and he eventually conducted his own orchestral music at age sixteen and later studied composition with Vitorio Giannini and Vincent Persichetti at Juilliard in NYC. Bernstein also attended the University of California; he received an Outstanding Graduate of the College Award, a Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship and a Chancellor's Doctoral Teaching Fellowship while working with American composer Roy Harris.

His impressively eclectic musical style ranges from comedy to drama to action to horror. Bernstein has supplied the scores for a bunch of enjoyably down'n'dirty early drive-in exploitation features: he turned up the funk with "That Man Bolt," went all-out groovy for the "Invasion of the Bee Girls," and kicked out the tuneful swinging country jams on "White Lightning" (a snippet of this score was used in Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill Vol. 1," and more extensively in his "Inglorious Basterds"), followed "by Gator," "A Small Town in Texas," and "Nightmare in Badham County." Bernstein's scores in the horror genre are especially chilling and effective: Among his finest fright film scores are "Hex," "Sweet Kill," "The Entity" (this is one of Bernstein's most inspired, inventive and underrated scores; it was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Music), "Cujo," Wes Craven's terrifying classics "A Nightmare on Elm Street," and "Deadly Friend," as well as "April Fool's Day." Moreover, Bernstein has done scores for a large number of made-for-TV movies.

He won an Emmy Award for his score for the "Little Miss Perfect." His scores for "Enslavement" and "The Sea Wolf" were nominated for Emmy Awards while his score for "The Man Who Broke A 1,000 Chains" received a Cable ACE Award nomination for Original Score. Outside of his substantial film and television work, Bernstein has also done music for Off-Broadway theater, modern dance, and the World Festival of Sacred Music, played jazz in the cellars of Paris, and danced and played folk music with the Greeks and gypsies from the Balkans.

His music is frequently heard in hip-hop samples, and is featured in the 2023 Drake/21 Savage hit, "Rich Flex." Moreover, Bernstein has written the acclaimed books "Film Music and Everything Else" and "Movie Music: An Insider's View." He won an ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for his writing on music.

Bernstein has been a former Vice President and long-serving member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors. He is a current Vice President and Board member of the Society of Composers and Lyricists, and is on the Board of Directors of the ASCAP Foundation. In addition, Charles Bernstein has taught on the graduate film scoring faculty at USC and holds an annual film scoring seminar in the summer at UCLA Extension."
