Resolutions & Reparations02 Jan 202600:08:16

🥳🥳🥳Happy New Year!

2025 was hard for me. I'm so grateful for a new year, new slate and I pray yours is even better than I pray for you all.

There's a short "episode" today. Big kudos to @faizifortexas running for Texas Comptroller. Do BIG things, y'all, even if you have to do them scared. 🙌🏾🙌🏾

⚠⚠ BUT a warning to those in the DMV: Swipe left to witness those closest to Allah, who can't communicate with words. And then listen to what I reported about @rnacoordinates behavior and their refusal to make reasonable, long lasting reparations via @muhsen.

Send them a message and find other planners who don't just do their jobs, they care about and practice DEI. Our faith requires that we be DEI, and of course, the West has colonized the term for our way of life. We are all accountable to Allah, especially when we wrong the most vulnerable among us.

No, I don't call out women, but I have zero tolerance for those who reject sincere naseeha (advice) and dig deeper into their ignorance. As always, send me your sincere naseeha and feedback. Tune in now and next week. 🎧

Lessons from the Life of Sawdah bint Zama'a (RA)11 Sep 202500:32:45

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack. Not the end of a horror film, but the end of a troubling journey of work, life and love lost with a happy ending. Don't be scared.

I owe you the completion of the Sahabiya Series, so here's this week's episode on Sawdah bint Zam’a (RA), the second wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. While it's hard to find English language information on her, it is possible alhamdulillah thanks to shayookh out there interpreting those texts for us.

Tune in to hear the 6 lessons I learned from what I found, and how they help me mother and live right now. For Muslimahs today who are navigating faith, family, and societal expectations, this is a good listen!

Healthy Muslim Marriages28 Feb 202500:54:10

Are we talking about sexuality and intimacy the right way? How we navigate these subjects can make or break our relationships; with our partners, and later on, with our kids if we don't learn how to be sex positive.

Too often, these discussions are academic or purely rule-based, leaving little room for emotional depth, vulnerable connection, and the nuanced challenges couples actually face. In this episode, @coachmeganwyatt helps us explore emotionally intelligent thoughts and conversations about sexuality and intimacy. Her approach certainly sheds more light on how we understand marital duties versus rights, and how we spiritually connect with our partners.

We also unpack some common marital challenges that cross her professional desk, from mismatched expectations to unspoken needs, and discuss where couples—and even community leaders—go wrong in addressing these issues. This is a conversation you don’t want to miss. Tune in now, and let’s start asking the right questions to have uncomfortable conversations. 🎙️💬

Replay: Muslim Moms & Neonatal Loss06 May 202301:20:28

Trigger warning!

Listen again to Abeeha Hassan's experience of stillbirth after her IVF journey. All that heartbreak, anticipation and work to come home empty-handed.  Early on in her recovery, she wanted us to broadcast normalizing grief. In this episode, she taught us sabr (patience), shukr (gratitude), and tawwakul (unshaking faith in Allah SWT).

Her process of closure may seem familiar to someone else who has gone this journey alone, and we are so touched that Abeeha chose to share her story with us. We pray a momsister finds comfort in knowing there’s someone sharing her story of loss and is available to talk about it. Say her name: "Jannah."

Tune in at 6pm EST for this important replay wherever you listen to podcasts, or head to our website (link in bio).

SERIES Muslim Moms Overcoming Inferility: Muslim Moms and IVF28 Apr 202301:00:11

 | Rabia Rajab is a survivor of infertility and IVF 🌟. Call it mother's intuition, but she knew before the doctors did about how tough her journey was going to be and initiated a decade long trip that would make most of us cut and run. Certainly, the Force (and the 4th) are with her.  💰 The costs of treatments are not only financial, but as you'll hear, social and emotional as well. For anyone considering it, this is a MUST listen💕.  👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Rabia and her husband did not have a supportive community of Muslims going through the same process. That's on all of us, y'all.  That is not okay. We need to fix that by speaking up about infertility awareness and treatments🤝.  Note: Make sure you swipe left.  Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, or head to our website landing page and listen there.  #IVFjourney #Infertility #MuslimsAndIVF #HopefulParents #EmotionalSupport #CommunityLove #FindYourVoice #notalone #muslimmoms #muslimfamily #musliminfertility

Muslim Moms’ Inspirational Favorites13 Apr 202300:27:30

 | Subhaan Ashrafi, founder of Sabr app, joins us today to tell us why he developed this for Muslim audiences and how it can help our families. His story of making a dream required resiliency and relationship-building, which he speaks on at length, an inspiration to us and to our kids. With persistence, he was able to create a unique app of its kind that is serving our families at the podcast so well.  In these times of increased mental health and spiritual needs in our community, we need quick coping skills at hand and to teach them to our children who’ve been born into social media FOMO culture. Sabr app serves this purpose and our kids use it to center themselves, focus on shukr, or gratitude, when things get rough, and it’s made a huge difference in our home lives.   Don’t forget to get back to us with the code word mentioned in the episode to win one free premium yearlong membership, courtesy of Sabr app. Email us at salam@mommyingwhilemuslim.com or DM us ASAP because it’s first come, first served!  Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, or check it out on our website.

Muslim Moms’ Instructional Favorites30 Mar 202300:47:48

Fahd Al Binali of IQRA Network joins us today to discuss his role in creating the platform to teach Quran and Islamic studies without children hating either or both. His specific interest in gearing education toward Western audiences is especially important because it focuses on application of these principles in students’ lives. This requires innovatively training and treating instructors in an organized way with accountability on all sides. IQRA fosters the relationship between teachers and students instead of the fear and dread that a lot of us experienced when learning Quran. We certainly didn’t have teachers with such integral preparation to engage Muslim American kids in our childhoods.  Uzma’s experience with the platform has been exemplary and her son is busily memorizing Juz ‘Amma, angry at her for not doing so herself. IQRA’s created a monster! Listen to this episode for a free course offered by IQRA Network to one blessed listener, and the first person to get the code word to us via DM or email at salam@mommyingwhilemuslim.com will win.  Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, or click on link in bio to hear this episode.

Muslim Moms’ Emergency Favorites24 Mar 202300:32:44

@browndages co-founder Instisar Bashir joins us today to describe the product she created with her husband in order to provide POC with options to cover up their wounds with products that actually blend in with their skin. For too long, we’ve had to explain the mainstream bandaids when people can clearly see them on our darker skin when it’s really not relevant to discussions at hand. Can we just cover them up and move on already? Heal in silence!  Find out how this mompreneur created Browndages with NO EXPERIENCE in creating such a product and ended up on Shark Tank. There they won the support of no less than 3 Sharks, including Mark Cuban, who committed his NBA franchise to wearing only Browndages. This is a terrific example of how to support Black owned businesses AND to learn how to pursue our mompassions.  Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, or click on link in bio to hear this episode.

The Gender Health Gap Effect on Muslimahs21 Feb 202500:35:15

Dr. Sadaf Lodhi OBGYN is back on the podcast this year to discuss the gender health gap and how it creates even more barriers for women, especially in marginalized communities of Muslim American women: from the Black community to asylees, immigrants, and refugees. Sick women don’t have the luxury of having sex positivity in their homes when their basic needs won’t be met, and are in fact sabotaged by the state. We talk about trauma, cell memory, cultural competency, and funding cuts that directly impact how we fare in the American pseudo-healthcare maze that’s hard to navigate when we DO speak English.

No visit with Dr. Sadaf Lodhi is complete without talking about mindset on the path to unlearning guilt and shame, and embracing sex positivity. There’s also lots of good news on the horizon with Dr. Lodhi and we hope you catch it towards the end of this episode. Share it with a friend and let us know how you’re working on building your sex positive home.

Forget the Spark, Keeping the Fire Alive23 Feb 202300:51:18

Jenny Triplett is a multimompreneur, author, and podcaster who joins us today to share her POV on surviving marriage, also the title of her podcast! Jenny and her husband Rufus give us tips online and in their programs, and she shares how she survived her own marriage and kept the spark alive through love and loss.
We take a curve down the dowry lane based on a recent post that generated a lot of conversation @rufusandjenny, but we bring it back. Her take on the Islamic marriage is conservative, so apply what works for you as we have. Feminists, take a deep breath. There is learning here for all of us, especially because the Black Muslim experience is different in key ways that many Muslims of immigrant heritage do not consider. Sit back and validate experiences.

Muslim Womb Wellness09 Feb 202300:51:00

WOW! Let us apologize for the echo on this episode. However, we think it’s tolerable. Our DMs have been popping through the year with questions about yoni or vaginal steaming, so we needed to find a practitioner who knows more about this.
Chantal Blake joins us from Dakkar, crossing the sea just to teach us about the globally ancient science of yoni steaming, a technique that addresses common issues women encounter daily. Heavy periods, infertility, sexual issues, watch out! Steaming may be the key to plumper, healthier vulva and uterus. In addition, let’s talk herbs, hot and cold foods, and diet as it relates to overall women's health.
Of course, none of this episode is medical advice, but it is information about female reproductive and sexual wellness that we deserve to know is out there as an option when maybe we’ve hit a wall with everything else. Ask a doctor you trust, or check out our links in Shownotes for certified vaginal steaming practitioners near you.
Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music or check out our website for easiest listening.

SERIES Muslim Moms Aren't Nuns: Common Muslim Sex Hang Ups03 Feb 202300:48:36

We kick off this podcast episode by apologizing to the Michigan Spartans! IFYKYK. Dr. Sadaf Lodhi OB/GYN sets us straight REAL fast on this episode! She is not only a practicing doctor to women, she is also host of The Muslim Sex Podcast and a certified Sex Coach.
THEN we start talking about the good stuff to launch our “Muslim Moms Aren't Nuns” series this February. What are the silent conversations Muslims are having with themselves about sex, or what are the stories we make up about sex because we aren’t comfortable admitting what we don’t know? Where our sex baggage comes from boils down a lot to where our thoughts originate, and on our ability to separate THOUGHTS from FACTS. Let’s figure out where some of those thoughts are born and how to stop bearing them forward.
What are the keys to raising our kids to have a healthy understanding of sex without making it sound too good to miss? Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music or check out our website to listen to our episodes.

Uyghur Muslim Mom Finale Episode 3 of 319 Jan 202300:16:38

In this finale of our limited series “Oppressed Mother,” hear how Mihrigul Tursun fought the PRC, and how her government demanded she relinquish her Egyptian citizenship or have her family in China imprisoned. Impossible choices a mother, daughter, sister, victim, must face.
At the cost of family reunification, Mihrigul testified through translators to Congress. Not only can she never return to her homeland, she is raising her living children alone and apart from her husband who is forced into hiding, all while contesting state led propaganda denying her trauma and that of millions more Uyghurs.
Tune in at 6pm EST to learn the rest of her story and how to help a single mother who has survived unimaginable trauma maintain hope and get justice. Share our Shownotes with friends as they are FULL of calls to action to make “Never again” more than just a quote for the history books. May all our mothers and children live in peace and safety across the globe.

Uyghur Muslim Mom Episode 2 of 312 Jan 202300:17:12

Trigger warning: torture
Mihrigul Tursun, Chinese citizen, recounts her journey out of China to higher education and global awareness: now she was surrounded by donkeys instead of chickens! Outside the PRC she also experienced her Islamic awakening, which would end up costing her freedom and threaten her children’s lives. Something as simple as what she newly wore on her head identified her as the “other” in the PRC, and landed her in a concentration camp. That’s not what they’re called by any media, Chinese or otherwise. They’re called “re-education centers.”
She recounts her torture by the PRC and the conditions of her release. What she saw behind the walls of these centers is beyond our imaginations. It’s mind blowing to think that any government could sell her limited options as choices, laced with threat and death, to barter her release to civilian society. Only it wasn’t, as all of her limited civil liberties in the PRC, were shrunken further just because she was Muslim.
Tune in to hear her story in her own words at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts or Stitcher (both on your phones already!), Amazon Music, ask Alexa, or go directly to our website and catch up on this limited series. Don’t forget to read the Shownotes on our website for personal and professional accounts of genocide in the PRC, as well as how you can help right now.

BONUS: Novel Suicidal Intervention 04 Jan 202300:48:36

Dr. Sheba Shah, MD comes on to talk about her path to helping patients with refractory depression and acute suicidality and newer methods to treat, namely, ketamine infusions. These centers are popping up all over the country and we want to make sure that our audience families know what to look for and what to run away from ASAP.

Not insignificant is a nod to Dr. Sheba Shah’s mom because behind every successful person is the driving force of a mom. Make duaa for her and ameen. Further, learn the history of and criteria for ketamine treatment, the types available, and what steps to take with your primary care doctor and/or psychiatrist to find out how to set it up for those who qualify. We want to make sure that those in our audience who regularly struggle with suicidal thoughts have HOPE, but we cannot a guarantee a cure. We are praying for all of you over here.

Tune in at 6pm EST for this BONUS episode that we had to put out for you because we wanted to be solutions-focused here on the podcast, but in no way is this episode medical advice. It is meant to provide medical options to discuss with your medical team. Share this with someone you know is struggling to be seen and cared for.

Muslims & Suicide 23 Dec 202200:47:50

Zaiba & Uzma tackle the topic of suicide among Muslims in America.  They tell you about the importance of knowing the telltale signs, including what KYS means.  Also,  learn how to talk to your kids about preventing suicide because prevention is key.   Research on Muslim suicidality is sparse, but preliminary data shows us that religious groups with the highest rates of suicidality include Muslims in the #1 spot! That is not a trophy we want to be winning, y’all. Hear about the social determinants, ie Islamophobia and western media biases lending toward higher rates of Muslim suicide.

Muslim Moms and Overwhelm15 Dec 202200:56:40

Sudduf Wyne of Salam Sadaf business coaching is a self proclaimed recovering perfectionist and mom of triplets. You’ve probably seen her speak on the toughness of mothering on social media. She is on today to address the overwhelm and pressures of mothering that make us feel inadequate. Say no to “supermom mythology!” It’s a scam, y’all.
Our guest has amazing tips on what to do to prevent mommy burnout and shame about admitting that as moms, we all need help. Let’s consider the blessings we withhold from our friends who offer to help and we refuse because we “should” be able to “do it all” ourselves. Motherhood is not meant to be done in a silo, and our Islamic traditions exemplify community caring for children.
The effects of absorbing those pressures from without and within can wreak havoc on mothers’ mental health and we insist on outsourcing and asking for/accepting help. It’s hard to acknowledge that we really cannot do it all, but we shouldn’t be expected to do it all. Definitely not all at once. Why is that considered successful anyway???
Work smart, not hard, so we can prevent mommy burnout and show up 100% for our kids, NOT for the cultural narratives that unequally burden mothers more than other members of the family. Tune in at 6pm EST wherever you listen to podcasts tonight and leave a review.

ADHD and Muslim Moms 08 Dec 202200:52:32

Shehla Faizi host and producer of I’m a Muslim & That’s Okay wears a lot of hats as a graphic artist, podcaster, and mom extraordinaire. Add to her repertoire, mom of a child with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and you have a recipe to learn A LOT.
We are too aware of the difficulty in helping our children get assistance with any kind of mental health assistance, but consider how hard it is to get a diagnosis as Shehla did. What did she notice, where did she go, and what has happened since? If you don’t need to hear it, SHARE this episode with the mom of a neurodivergent child or child with ADHD to let her know she’s not alone.

SERIES Muslim Mental Health Hot Topics: Problematic Behavior & Functional Medicine01 Dec 202200:48:16

We kick off our Muslim Mental Health Hot Topics series this month with Functional Medicine Coach Momina Salim who discusses problematic behaviors in children and how preventive measures like good, pure food can make a change for the better. We want to extrapolate behaviors such as ADHD to mental health on what we eat and how we live. Hear how functional medicine inspired her own health journey and passion to help children.
While NO substitute for therapy and medication, we hope that by purifying our daily practices like clean eating, regular activity, and refreshing sleep, we can circumvent the mental health issues that plague our community. For those who suffer from mental health issues, please pursue medical attention first and then circle back here to help you maintain your optimum health status. If you are considering hurting yourself, please call or text 988 for the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Living Momsisterhood24 Nov 202200:57:06

Dr. Jamillah Karim with academic qualification as long our wingspans joins us today to dispel several Muslim biases vs polygyny: she’s educated, she’s financially capable, she’s independent, she’ authoritative, she’s confident, and she CHOOSES polygyny as a way of life for herself. She is both frank about her support of it as a source for authentically loving and supporting Muslim sisterhood, as well as recognizing the role of jealousy in polygyny. She does an excellent job of weighing pros and cons aloud in this episode so if anyone has never entertained both sides of polygyny, consider doing it. Hear about how polygyny serves her spiritual purposes, which in and of themselves are enviable mashaAllah.
Furthermore, for all those viscerally anti polygyny, consider the pervasive barriers to mere SURVIVAL that Black Americans, specifically Black Muslims, face and why polygyny may be a critical tool they need to perpetuate healthy Muslim families. For anyone slamming polygyny willy nilly this month on our socials and DMs, consider the anti Blackness of your prejudice to choices made by our brothers and sisters in America. Are you ready to be a bigot? Are you ready to marry Black Muslim women into your non-Black Muslim family?
Note: For those who don’t know what the “Warith Deen community” mentioned in this episode is,  it’s the community of primarily Black Muslim Americans who followed the son of Elijah Mohammad, Warith Deen Muhammad, to mass conversion from The Nation of Islam to Sunni Islam in the 1970s.
Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, or right on our website landing page and get caught up on all the episodes of this month.

Power in Muslim Polygamy10 Nov 202201:08:08

Coach Fatimah and Coach Nyla of Outstanding Personal Relationships join us today to talk about their lives as cowives. Anything that rhymes is our cup of tea, as are these two ladies who teach us what sisterhood can look like if we get good with Allah SWT first. It’s a conversation you don’t want to miss, especially when we talk about how polygamy is practiced in the Black Muslim American community for reasons that some of us from immigrant roots have not considered before.
Again, no one is trying to convince Muslim moms to be co wives. But listen to these ladies talk about how they focus on their individual faith, support women, and use their advice to support a momsister in your life; and see what changes can come for both of you. Life could be beautiful if we applied what we learn from OPR to our own (monogamous) lives.
Tune in at 6pm EST tonight and share this episode with someone you know wouldn’t give polygyny the time of day! We are trying to educate, not convert here, don’t worry.

SERIES: Sex Positive Muslim Family: Hot Takes on "Halal Dating"06 Feb 202500:52:32

Y'all know what FEBRUARY means on this podcast: love, sex, and all the stuff we would never discuss in public, but feel safe listening to on a podcast. Whether you listen in private or with a partner, I'm so glad you're here for it. This month's series is "Sex Positive Muslim Family," and I'll go blue in the face asking us to create one.

Never been on a halal date? Turns out, most of us have, whether we were old school or modern arranged, met through friends, or online. It's not the oxymoron it first sounded like to an old fogey like me. I challenge listeners to expand our vocabulary and thoughts, but I share all of your "haram reservations."  Let's get uncomfortable together.

Mariam Afzal helps redefine "dating" for Generations X and Alpha, bringing home the message that all of it can look and be halal if we, as parents, create safe spaces for our kids. That means holding honest conversations, setting boundaries, and maybe chilling out and remembering that we are not to raise our children as we were raised. Biding the advice of Ali (RA), our children are for a different world, as we were for ours. So let's see how we can navigate this precarious future and keep it halal.

Dating, rebellion, parenting genders, birth order, too....we avoided deep dives to stay on track, but I'm sure there will be a couple of new series coming just out of this one episode. Share the link with a friend, and post your craziest halal dating story in the comments.

In Memoriam: Alwiya Mohamed31 Oct 202200:37:42

Will Perry represents the men of the masjid for us today and boy is he gracious about it because we really dug into him: Where are all the men when it comes to DV in the Muslim community? Good news! The urban legend of the Muslim American Posse is well and alive, so sisters, you have your soldiers available to you if you’re willing to call on them. Brothers, build more posses.
Unique POV we gain from Brother Will who takes us upstream to remind Muslim men, and in many cases teach for the first time, their role as protectors of women in Islam (if you want to scream, “We don’t need protection,” please relax and take a decaf. No bigger feminists than us here). MIDC works with many middle aged men who have never been married and have to re enter the ummah after decades of incarceration and trauma that fuels the dysfunction of some marriages. This happens to Muslim and non Muslim FYI.
How do we prevent another Muslim mom from dying when we can prevent it?  Find out what MIDC is doing and help them continue this work through the community’s trauma after Alwiya's untimely death, and ask how to support the affected family. May Allah SWT grant her the highest level and protect her daughter from any harm seen or unseen. Ameen.

Emotional Abuse: Destroying From the Inside28 Oct 202200:48:10

Hope comes on anonymously today to discuss her experience of emotional abuse–the scars that NO ONE SEES. Find out the walls that women in this situation run into: from perpetuating cycles of emotional abuse, cultural toxicity and the dearth of healing resources (including finances) that don’t permit them to leave.
Have you ever wondered if what you’ve experienced is abuse? Hear what Hope has to say and understand that what an abuser considers benign, he (10X more likely to be “he”) will make her believe it is, too.
If you need help, call the National Domestic Hotline just to talk and explore what you’re experiencing: 1-800-799-7233. As always, you can DM us or email salam@mommyingwhilemuslim.com if you don’t know about the culturally competent, Muslim-friendly local hero organizations near you.

BONUS Replay: But He Doesn't Hit Me21 Oct 202200:57:20

This is a special REPLAY of Madiha Schader’s experience of hiding the painful details of her emotional abuse from family and friends. The cultural reasons she did this are very clear in her story. She’s not unique, especially because her lived domestic violence wasn’t always physical. Mental, emotional, verbal abuse, financial/social isolation, witholding necessary care, and unreasonable demands from a place of control that endanger a person’s psychosocial wellbeing are equally suffocating, and a matter of life and death. Madiha’s freedom came through her own son and her body. Find out how her closest friends identified what was happening and supported her until she was able to decide it was time to save herself. If you know someone you suspect is in danger of physical violence or mental oppression, help her using the resources listed below. Don’t wait until your phone rings with the worst news ever; text her and let her know you’ve got a listening, non judgmental ear and shoulder for her. If you’re someone who is in danger, having kids WILL NOT change an abuser towards you and might direct abuse toward your kid(s).

Trigger warning: sexual abuse
Mina is our guest today, anonymized to protect their identity. They share their experience with childhood sexual abuse and the effects it had on them, their parents, and their extended family. There are a lot of dynamics to consider and our inner justice-seeker may be triggered; however, the insight as a therapist and survivor they offer is really important to think about.
Let’s talk about second generation trauma, family expectations vs social expectations, our own healing journeys, and how severed ties are navigated in these terribly delicate circumstances.
Tune in at 6pm EST and don’t forget to check the MANY resources we have in our Shownotes for you (on our website). The Space Between Us19 Aug 202200:49:22

#boymom Farheen Raza Abbas joins us to discuss the circumstances that caused her to limit relationships in her own family. We didn’t expect bullying to show up in our series this month, but this episode really highlights what that can look like, some of the cultural bases of it, and how to set it straight.
Learn how to set healthy boundaries and protect our inner children as well as the next generations from toxic cultural behavior, i.e. bullying and body shaming, that can literally break apart families. Also find out how Farheen teaches how to end any tantrum in 5 seconds and avoid hostile family confrontations she learned from TikTok.
Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, or click the link in bio to hear it right off our website! Share this episode with a bully you might be related to to help them gain some insight into their hurtful, un-Islamic behaviors.
