How Conspiracy Theories and Secret Society Fears Have Shaped American History - Mo News Interview

vendredi 29 décembre 2023Durée 50:18

From the Salem Witch Trials to Qanon, it turns out that conspiracy theories are “as American as apple pie.” We dive into why we believe them, and how they have impacted American history and democracy in a conversation with author and cultural historian Colin Dickey.  His latest book, “Under the Eye of Power: How Fear of Secret Societies Shape American Democracy,” provides some fascinating historical perspective into how fears of immigrants, other religions, and secret societies have impacted the country’s history over the last few centuries.  Mark Twain once said that “history doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes,” and we learn that from this unique look at the American story.  —- Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. Daring Ladies: The Incredible History of the Women of the CIA

vendredi 22 décembre 2023Durée 50:03

It is a story we have not learned much about….until now. Facing sexism and huge institutional hurdles, the story of the women who helped build the CIA and put their lives on the line in conflicts going back to WWII is an incredible, compelling history.    Writer Liza Mundy tells us their story in her new book, “The Sisterhood: The Secret History of Women at the CIA.” It’s a follow up to her previous book “Code Girls,” about the female code breakers of World War II. Mosheh talks to Liza about the role women played in forming the CIA, what foreign governments they helped infiltrate, what info they helped the US government learn (and what was ignored!!) during the Cold War all the way through the war on terrorism. We also discuss how accurate the portrayal of female agents like those in ‘Homeland’ and ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ are to reality.  — Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. More Secrets Than The CIA: Investigating McKinsey’s Influence on the World

vendredi 15 décembre 2023Durée 44:15

It is the most prestigious consulting company in the world, and yet most of us know very little about McKinsey.  The multi-billion dollar firm helps governments around the world and the Fortune 500 make key decisions when it comes to their businesses and their images. McKinsey clients have included big tobacco, opioid makers, the Chinese government as well as US government agencies & the companies they regulate (at the same time). However, all of that work is shielded by NDAs.  How does all that work? Is it legal or ethical? And, how has McKinsey impacted the lives of millions of Americans and people around the world through their consulting relationship? Those are some of the questions we asked investigative reporter Walt Bogdanich in this episode. His book, When McKinsey Comes To Town, follows a multi-year investigation. — Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. Interview: One-On-One With A Palestinian From Gaza on Hamas, Israel and Solutions

mercredi 22 novembre 2023Durée 01:12:03

As the Israel-Hamas war approaches 50 days, we are speaking with voices from both sides of the war to gain insight into the realities on the ground.  In this episode, Mosheh speaks with Khalil Sayegh. He was born and raised in Gaza, then lived in the West Bank, and is now in the US, where he recently got his master's degree from American University. His family is currently seeking refuge in a church in northern Gaza. Sayegh speaks candidly about the war, growing up as a Christian in Gaza, life under Hamas, why they are an obstacle for peace and the daily realities for Palestinians. At the same time, he talks about what he learned when he met Israelis for the first time, the empathy he gained, but also how he believes Israeli government policies have strengthened Hamas and worsened the conflict.  He recently founded a grassroots organization, the Agora Initiative, partnering with an Israeli to focus on long-term solutions to the conflict. For more information about the Agora Initiative, follow Khalil on X. — Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist.
