Ep.266 Jeremy Deller - Ministry of Arts Podcast
Épisode 266
jeudi 5 décembre 2024 • Durée 32:33
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Jeremy Deller (@jeremydeller)
Jeremy Deller is a British conceptual artist renowned for his innovative and socially engaged practice. His work often explores history, politics, memory, and collective identity, blending art with performance, video, and community involvement.
Deller’s approach is notable for its inclusivity—he often collaborates with non-professional participants to produce work that challenges traditional notions of art and authorship.
One of his most significant works is The Battle of Orgreave (2001), a reenactment of the violent 1984 miners' strike confrontation between police and striking miners. The project addressed themes of working-class struggle, historical memory, and the spectacle of violence, raising questions about how history is remembered and represented. This immersive approach to historical events would become a hallmark of Deller’s practice.
Other notable works include English Magic (2013), a politically charged series that critiques British national identity, capitalism, and inequality. Deller’s work often critiques social and political structures while encouraging dialogue and participation. In 2004, he won the Turner Prize for his ability to redefine art's relationship to both the public and its cultural contexts. Deller’s work continues to reflect his belief that art should engage with and speak to the world around it, often offering new ways of understanding the past, present, and future.

Ep.265 John Costi - Ministry of Arts Podcast
Épisode 265
lundi 18 novembre 2024 • Durée 41:56
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to John Costi (@bapou_costi)
This is John Costi’s second appearance on the Ministry of Arts Podcast, the first being ep.48. He is known for his conceptual and often collaborative work, which explores themes of culture, identity, and history.
In 2012, Costi had a notable experience traveling to Venice with artist Jeremy Deller. The trip was part of a project facilitated by the Koestler Trust, an organization that supports creative work by prisoners, ex-offenders, and young people at risk. Deller, a renowned artist known for his interest in social contexts, invited Costi to join him in Venice during the Venice Biennale, where they explored the intersections of art, prison reform, and personal narrative.
This journey allowed Costi to engage in a broader dialogue about the transformative potential of art, especially for marginalized communities. The Venice trip exemplified Costi’s approach to art-making—collaborative, reflective, and deeply attuned to the social and political dimensions of creative expression.
John and Jeremy have co-curated Koestler Arts’ annual exhibition at Southbanks, Royal festival Hall, ‘No Comment’ runs until 15th December.

Jonny Mellor- New Artist Fair 2024/ MoA Bonus Episode 43
mercredi 4 septembre 2024 • Durée 27:54
In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Jonny Mellor (@JonnyMellorArt) who is showing in the New Art Fair 2024, at the Truman Brewery, London, from 27-29 September 2024
I am an artist strongly influenced by minimalism and geometric abstraction. I use this visual language to create paintings, prints and hand cut paper art . The exploration of colour, process, materials, space and form are central to my practice.
I am interested in taking forms, shapes and patterns and combining these with carefully considered colour combinations. I am continually striving to achieve balance and harmony within my works composition and colour pallet.
Amongst the barrage of visual stimulation and the overall increasingly chaoticness of life, minimalist art is at rest, creating a quiet harmony and balance which offers the viewer a space of calmness and contemplation.

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Trish Wylie (@trishwylieartist)
Trish Wylie has been painting for more than 30 years and is currently based in London. Her latest work is inspired by themes of gender and nature. She also explores the use of multiple mediums from collage to re-visiting watercolour on large scale canvas. Alongside this is her interest in Jungian theory (animus/anima) which she explores in her latest James Bond and Lipstick series.
Her most recent watercolours have been a result of continual re-working with a medium that could be argued has been ignored and dismissed and we she has used to huge effect on works based on her travels to the Mojave Desert.
Trish was born in South London and attended Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. Soon after graduating she moved with her family of two to the South West of England. Whilst there she held several part time teaching posts, and exhibited in London and the South West. In 2010 she returned to London where she continues to work and exhibit. Ep.191 Kate Knight - Ministry of Arts Podcast
Épisode 191
mardi 27 septembre 2022 • Durée 51:32
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Kate Knight (@knightpainter)
Kent based artist Kate Knight works primarily with figurative imagery.
Within the drawn explorations of nature, Knight's concerns are upon the aesthetics of desire, sex and death. The works are provocative, playful, harsh and tongue in cheek. The compositions establish a series of graphic signs, aiming to evoke a narrative whether epic or fleeting.
The current developments juxtapose a darker underbelly, presenting unease; as well as the guardianship of something sacred. This response is loaded with a sense of otherness, something beyond the ordinary; a dystopian landscape. Knight currently works in biro as well as painting and sculpture. The use of biro on such a large scale is labour intensive; enabling very fine detail and presenting an etched like quality. Knight approaches drawing in much the same way as she paints, for this reason she considers herself to be primarily a painter.
Knight studied her BA Fine Art Painting at Chelsea College of Art and design 2005. She was selected as the runner up for the Marmite Prize for Painting 2010 as well as being selected for ‘Artist of the Day’ Flowers Central on Cork Street 2010 by professor Mo Throp. She is a regular participant at London's prestigious Art Car Boot Fair

John Ball - MoA Bonus Episode 17
mercredi 21 septembre 2022 • Durée 34:51
In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to John Ball (@beware_the_void)
Based in Romford (London, U.K) and working primarily in the South East of the United Kingdom, contemporary artist John Ball creates unsettling images of a dystopian suburban landscape.
John is probably best known for his appearance on the Sky Arts ‘Landscape Artist Of The Year’ television show where he was fortunate enough to place as finalist.
‘Incredibly cinematic, foreboding vacant landscapes’ comparable to the work of Edward hopper and David lynch. (Kate Bryan, Head of Collections for Soho House)
'John Ball's work was a like a breath of fresh air on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year in 2017 with its unique sense of mood and use of colour. The melancholic scenes that he constructs are poetic in themselves and full of story, to the point that they demand your attention and hold it very firmly indeed.' (Kathleen Soriano, curator)
Commissioned by Teeth of the Sea (Rocket Recordings) to produce their debut album cover in 2009 and subsequently 'your mercury' (2010) and 'Master' (2013).
John has previously exhibited in The National Portrait Gallery with the BP Portrait Awards in 2007 with his painting 'Commuter' This was also published in the '500 Portraits' hardback in 2011.
In 2018 His first solo show ‘beware the void’ debuted in Escondido, California.
From 23-35 September, John will be showing his work at The New Artist Fair at in The Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, London, E1 – For more details go to https://www.newartistfair.com/
