Box Breathing | A 5-minute Guided Meditation

Today’s session will strictly be on breath work, specifically a method called box breathing. This method is really easy to remember and easy to use throughout your day when you need to calm your body and mind. Box breathing is when you inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, and repeat. If you have difficulty with 4 seconds, you can modify it to 2 or 3 seconds per step. Let's begin.

Today’s guided meditation is on the Stoic cardinal virtue of Courage. Stoic Courage can be defined by one's ability to live one’s principles and values despite opposition. It is the opposite of cowardice, or the running away from one’s fears and problems. For the stoic sage, vice is the only thing that should be feared because it is within our power to avoid. We might experience impressions or impulses of fear when our automatic, habitual responses take over momentarily. However, we can decide if we need to give assent to these impressions and act accordingly with courage. Now let’s begin.

Interest in meditation, mindfulness, and contemplation has grown exponentially in recent years. For millions around the world, mindfulness has become a life-style choice, enhancing and enriching everyday experience.


This guided meditation is on the idea of non-attachment taught in various religions and philosophies such as Buddhism, Taoism, and Stoicism. Non-attachment can be described as the overcoming of emotional clinging to ideas, identities, externals, and things outside of our control. By not attaching ourselves to these things we can experience less suffering and more empathy for others. Prior to discussing non-attachment, I will quote Alan Watts to help ground ourselves in the present moment.

What is the meaning of the Stoic practice of Amor Fati? Stoicism is an excellent framework for modern life, the ideas are simple on the surface, but the value can be profound.


Amor Fati is the practice of accepting and embracing everything that has happened, is happening, and is yet to happen. It is understanding that the nature of the universe is change, and that without change we would not exist, our relationships would not exist, we wouldn’t laugh, cry, love, create, or grow. We would not experience any of this.


This guided meditation on Amor Fati (the love of one's fate) draws upon the wisdom of Nietzche, Epictetus, Albert Camus, Marcus Aurelius, and Gandalf.
