Turning their eyes wearily back to the big screen for the first Now Screaming ep in quite a while, Noah and Eliza deFiNeTeLy sAw A Minecraft Movie!!! yeEEsss!!! it’s almost like the blocks are an uncredited main character it’s almost like the chicken jockey was my dead wife the whole time !!!! The release that gets our real attention is Ryan Coogler’s fiery genre mash-up Sinners, a Jim Crow-era vampire bash that strikes us with its impassioned ideas and ritzy IMAX storytelling. it’s good!! maybe the movies aren’t dead?? maybe like vampires they’ll just keep coming back for another chompe ?? It’s the season for ho-ho-horror, and how are we meant to feel the festive spirit without watching some horrible nasty Christmas movies? Noah, Eliza and Anthony kick off a Christmas horror edition of Midnight Marathon with Christmas Evil (1980) and Silent Night Deadly Night Part 2 (1987) - two movies about an unhinged Santa taking their yuletide trauma out on those they deem ‘naughty’. Thing is, the first movie is a bonafide cult classic, loved by John Waters and featuring a tremendous lead performance from Fiona Apple’s dad (??!!). The second movie is an insane feat of feature-film recycling, and one of the worst lead performances we’ve ever seen. GARBAGE DAY indeed. The pairing goes down like a litre of rotten egg nog, and our mistletoe marathon is only just beginning. That’s what we’re obsessed with in this third and final leg of our Lynch marathon: honing in on terror, in the director’s final, bewildering feature Inland Empire, and some of his eeriest artworks. Using (literally, gorily) raw materials and violent scenarios, Lynch’s mixed-media paintings show that his visual art can often be more strikingly obvious than his wonderful films - and, featuring Laura Dern in a career-best, multifaceted role, Inland Empire is certainly proof of that, too. Noah and Eliza both read George Gipe’s tie-in novel and are horrified to realise the thus-far-untold depths of Mogwai suffering. Are all movie novelisations like this, and why are they like this, and can we find one that stands on its own merits as a work of literary fiction? It’s about that time…the time…for SLIME… Comparing two swampy creature features, Noah and Eliza wonder if there are some animals that simply are not scary enough to power a horror movie. Juan Piquer Simon’s 1988 movie SLUGS sics millions of black, writhing, gooey gastropods on a small town of hilariously hateful and rude characters, resulting in some gnarly SFX moments and sexual subtext. But 1972’s FROGS doesn’t have nearly enough critters!! It’s got Sam Elliott and an interesting bayou mansion setting, but not enough actual webbed-hands-around-throats action :( Which film is the scariest and the squishiest? Do these movies actually make us care more about the environment or just wanna stomp it to death? How did Noah overcome his childhood leech fear ? All good questions but u won’t get answers today, we’re talking about other frog and slug stuff you couldn’t possibly comprehend. U can listen in and try though. ribbit.
