This week, I’m joined by Dr Claire Vowell of Dr Claire Coaching.

Claire works with high-performing individuals to unlock their full potential, define success on their terms, amplify their impact, and create a legacy that’s both meaningful and sustainable.

She works with ambitious, purpose-led leaders who already operate at a high level but want to go further, elevating every area of life.

In this week's episode, Claire shares about her early years travelling in South America with her sister, and her early belief that she couldn't do maths so she avoided a degree with any maths involved.

After freelancing and working in corporate roles in comms, she decided she needed to do something else. Claire realised something was missing. She quit her job, found a Masters Course and set out on her path to become a Psychologist. Not following an easy route and a few bumps in the road, she then did a doctorate.

At the same time, Claire juggled her studies alongside a new baby and went back part time. As a full time Mum with her second child following soon after she continued her studies, ultimately gaining her qualification which she attributes to being determined.

In this solo episode, Sandra Garlick MBE opens up about the realities of confidence, her Mic Drop Moments.

Drawing on personal experiences from childhood to her adult life, Sandra shares her journey of gaining, losing, and rebuilding confidence.

She offers practical strategies and insights to help listeners take that first step toward a more confident life—even if they don't always feel it.

Sandra questions whether confidence is innate or shaped by our environment, sharing her belief that everyone is born confident, but that life experiences influence our self-assurance.  

Sandra recounts her early childhood memories, experiences influences including her vivid memories from ballet classes where she hesitated to join in, and her early school years where supportive teachers encouraged her to participate.  

Sandra Describes how her mother's constant “what if” concerns and critical comments during her secondary school years eroded her confidence.

Even those who appear confident can experience moments of doubt and nervousness.  Sandra shares her own pre-stage jitters and the “fight, flight, or freeze” response when facing new challenges.

Sandra shares how she uses small pre-performance rituals (like applying lipstick, wearing a signature perfume, and picking up the microphone) to trigger a confident state of mind.

She also emphasises the power of affirmations (e.g., “I have everything I need within me”) to reframe negative thoughts and encourages visualising success and rehearsing until actions become second nature—much like learning to ride a bike without thinking about falling off.

Confidence grows with each step outside your comfort zone.  

Sandra challenges listeners to take one small action—whether it's introducing themselves at a networking event, speaking up in a meeting, or posting online—as a stepping stone to greater confidence.

Sandra concludes by reminding us that while she may appear confident on stage, she too battles self-doubt. Her message is clear: embrace the journey, learn from each step, and allow yourself to grow through every experience.

  Reflect on one small step you can take today to boost your confidence. Remember, every action builds your path toward a more assured future.

Today's Mic Drop Moments Guest is Julie Bale  

• Voice teacher, hypnotherapist, and lifelong singer  
• Over 35 years of experience teaching singing  
• Author of a successful book on hypnotherapy for weight loss

Julie has a lifelong passion for singing and has been singing since before she could speak and has always taught others to find their voice. Her early experiences—ranging from childhood karaoke to memorable school choir moments—sparked her enduring love for music.

Julie discovered hypnotherapy as a tool to overcome stage nerves and help singers unlock their full potential. This approach not only boosted performance confidence but also led her to develop a hypnotherapy program that successfully addressed weight struggles.

A series of events, including a moving funeral and an emotional conversation with a former student, inspired Julie to refocus on the transformative power of singing. She recognised that many people are silenced by past criticisms and missed opportunities to embrace their natural talent.

Julie emphasises that singing is a skill anyone can develop with practice, regardless of early discouragement or perceived limitations. She highlights common experiences where negative comments from authority figures (e.g., teachers, parents) hinder potential, and she challenges these narratives.

There’s a strong synergy between singing and speaking—both require confidence and the ability to express one's true self. Julie draws parallels between performing opera and public speaking, advocating for embracing one’s unique voice.

I had no idea when I started my Podcast journey on 1st July 2021 that those initial and sometimes sporadic 10 minute episodes would evolve into years of weekly content.

So here we are with a refreshed and rebranded look and feel, to celebrate Episode 150, with so many exciting episodes to come. I have to hold myself back as I could easily bring you two episodes a week!

Today I'm chatting to the Award Winning Rachel Peebles of Estrellas Brillantes.

Rachel teaches Spanish to over 250 people a week from babies to adults, her eldest student is 90. Babies can hear the sounds through passive learning and Rachel teaches through songs and play, making it interactive and fun.

Rachel's journey started when she was 18 and visited Bolivia to volunteer for a month. She couldn't even speak Spanish. She took a year out and went back, and when she graduated lived there for 7 years.

Rachel still visits the Charity in Bolivia and now takes her little boy who picks up the language so easily because he also speaks it at home and is now bilingual.

I also share some of my own language learning experiences and lack of confidence speaking languages.

Rachel entered and won a Solopreneur Award in October 2024. Despite living in Glasgow, she travelled to the Midlands to take part in the Solopreneur Awards Lunch, winning an Award.

Rachel's wording for her Solopreneur Award win: "We have to commend you for such an inspiring and detailed application, including the testimonials from your young students, which were outstanding. It's clear you go above and beyond for each of them. Today I'm chatting to Carolyn Parker, Author. We chat about Carolyn's journey into writing, her surprise Special Award win at the Woman Who Solopreneur Awards 2023, and receiving a standing ovation after sharing her story on stage at the Woman Who Solopreneur Awards 2024. Carolyn talks about how she started her writing journey by sharing her own very personal story. She wrote about her firsts and sadly, her naivety, the challenges she faced and how she came through this period in her life with the aim to help others realise that they're not alone and can move forward . This kickstarted Carolyn's journey into writing.

We also chat about how Carolyn started her speaking journey and her standing ovation.

Today I'm chatting with Woman Who Solopreneur Award Winner, Mandy Rees of Mother for Life.

Mandy supports women by bringing them together with other women through circles for women who are preparing for and starting their motherhood journey.

Mandy, a former lawyer with a top law firm, struggled with post-natal depression and shares her story about how she tried to work full time but ended up working a crazy existence trying to carry out a full time role in 3 days.

She knew she needed to do something and that was to support working mum's going into motherhood. Whilst things have got a lot better, there is still work to be done.

Having worked as a mother in the legal profession I totally resonated with Mandy and the work she is doing to create more female role models.

Mandy was a Winner of the Woman Who Solopreneur Awards 2024. Mandy shares why she entered the Awards and how she used her experience to celebrate herself, as she often asks other women to do.

From struggling with post-natal depression and lacking a female support network to building a thriving and empowering community for women, the judges were blown away by Mandy’s determination, vision, and love for what she does and the lives she is changing. They think Mandy should take this award as the catalyst to believe in herself as much as she believes in her mission.

Today I'm chatting to Woman Who Solopreneur Award Winner, Cate Caruth, Content Alchemist of Creative Words.

Put simply, Cate and her team write, but it's so much more than that.

Cate shares her journey from wanting to be a cuckoo clock (aged 3) and how although she wanted to be a writer as a teenager, she shelved her hobby believing it wasn't a 'proper job' and subsequently went into management consulting which ultimately led her into content writing and the important element of actually getting that 'content gold' out there as a done for you service... content alchemy.

We chat about Cate's love of networking, her passions, her thoughts on AI for content writers, and her recent Award wins.

One of Cate's business goals for 2024 was to be an 'award winning' business and she recognised the marketing opportunities that could create. Plus, she saw the value of having her business evaluated by independent peers. She found the Woman Who Awards, entered and won. Cate shares some great insights and tips from her award entry too.

Today, I'm chatting with Woman Who Solopreneur Award Winner, Ann Girling, the Unlikely Guru, proud Ambassador for Arbonne, Podcast Host and Author.

Ann, who is almost 75 has no intention to retire has some big goals ahead to celebrate what would have been her Mum's 100th Birthday.

She left a long career in the NHS after burnout and was drawn into the health and wellness space. 

Ann and I are both advocates of Ikigai and living your purpose. Ann also shares how she was featured in the media from an Instagram post shared by her PT and subsequently featured in a women's publication which was shared again by Metro online... she went viral.

Ann also shares how she visualised and manifested her Woman Who Award win, how she put her 'all' into her entry and interview, and the affirmations she used.

Today I’m chatting to Anna Neville of Kindslingo, Solopreneur Award Winner 2024.

We chat about Anna’s background and business journey and how she started her business providing language services for children.

We also chat about how Anna grew her business, how she investigated growth models and franchised it in 2013. Anna now has over 80 franchisees. Franchising is a very common model in the children’s sector.

We chat about how important it is to learn languages from a young age, so much easier than when we’re adults. It’s now more common for languages to be taught in early years curriculum in nursery school

Today I’m chatting to Julie Hughes of Hughes Probate Services, Solopreneur Award Winner 2024.

We chat about Julie’s journey into law and how she started her business providing probate services. We also chat about the difficult subject of death and how to make things easier for those we leave behind.

Julie works with bereaved families at one of the most difficult and sensitive times and supports them through the Probate process, plus a whole lot more. In fact, it’s spurred her on to start another business to support people during the loss of a loved one, bringing together all the services you may need.

Julie blew the Judges away in her interview for the Solopreneur Awards. In fact, these are their words:

Today is the follow up to last week’s episode #132 ‘The Risks Associated with Brand & Reputation’

This week I’m sharing my 10 top tips to ELEVATE your brand and reputation including some of my own examples.

It takes a lot of work to build a brand and enhance your reputation. However, by following these tips, you’re on to a winner.

You’ll hear me talking about storytelling, consistency, and engagement as well as collaborating with others (including my 100 collaborators list) and celebrating your achievements, my mantra. I also chat about being visible and nurturing your reputation.

You may have seen my blooper video, I don’t always get it right but I was happy to share the outtakes as it really showed the fun element of my brand as well as my attempts to be professional (check out the link below).

Finally, I remind you that ‘No’ is a full sentence and how to say ‘No’ if something isn’t aligned with your brand, to ensure that you don’t damage your reputation.

Today I’m chatting to Fenella Hemus of Fenella Hemus NLP Training and Coaching

Fenella has been in the business of transformation for 25+ years, supporting people of all ages to grow and thrive. 

She runs Fenella Hemus NLP Training and Coaching and certifies leaders and coaches in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and Breakthrough Coaching. With these life transforming tools they can achieve deeper, longer lasting results for clients, staff teams and themselves so creating positive change in the world. 

Fenella shares her story and how much she enjoyed working with children. She also worked as a personal trainer, ultimately discovered NLP and started her business aged 51.

Fenella shares her personal story too, a time where she experienced personal loss and although she ploughed on at the time, ultimately the pressure led her to step away from her role to move abroad.

We chat about play and how we lose the ability to do that as we become teenagers. However, we need play to be creative in our working life. Fenella loves to climb a tree when she can and regularly volunteers with young people.

Today I’m chatting to Harpreet Stevenson of Collective Companion

Harpreet specialises in social media and and in particular working with engineering, and technology businesses. She loves breaking down engineering and technology jargon.

Harpreet shares her amazing journey working in the engineering and technology space, and her education including time in Prague and her experience in a range of industries, ultimately ending up starting her own business.

We chat about the challenges of starting a business and how tough it can be at times. Harpreet is also a part of a ‘think tank’ encouraging women to access board positions and is looking at other projects that she can become involved in. and chats about having the ‘entrepreneurial bug’.

She also shares her dream to become a TV or radio presenter and it’s still on the horizon for the future.
