For most SLAYER fans, Tuesday, September 11, 2001, began as every other new music release day would: we all anxiously anticipated stopping by the record store after work to pick up a copy of their brand-new album, GOD HATES US ALL. 

Words cannot describe the eerily psychotic synchronicity that seemingly linked the atrocities of that day with the timing of the release of SLAYER’s 9th studio album. Still, after twenty-three years (and counting), one thing remains unchanged:  GOD HATES US ALL may have been the lone moment of redemption during America’s darkest hour, chock full of brutally scorching riffs, hostile vocal vitriol, and a creepier sonic signature that makes this one of the landmark albums of the band’s career.

TITLE TRACKS are not always the ultra-obvious, one trick pony they’d seem to be.

Sometimes it IS ultra-obvious and is smack dab in the middle of the chorus where it belongs, sometimes only one of the words might be included in the chorus, and still other times “the chorus is not explicitly mentioned” anywhere within the title track at all. 

As you can tell, the rules regarding TITLE TRACKS are often “unburdened by what has been” particularly when factoring in all the confusing rules and conditions that seem to be a part of the burdensome phenomenon known as TITLE TRACKS. But while everything that preceded this sentence may not make any logical sense to a logical person with a logically functioning mind, it’s nothing that we can’t power through and figure out by working together.

May 17, 2024, marks the day that KERRY KING released the diabolically brutal debut, FROM HELL I RISE, forging a new chapter in thrash metal. And before you get all “skeptical” about it and start in with some snide remark like “Oh, this is just diet Slayer…”, understand that this is definitely NOT Slayer (although, it kinda is…even though it’s “allegedly” not). 

Make no mistake, KERRY KING is not just that bald, tattooed dude from Slayer with some random backup band. In fact, KERRY KING is a legitimate thrash super group with an all-star line-up featuring members of Death Angel, Vio-Lence, and (of course) Slayer. And for a debut solo album, FROM HELL I RISE is an absolute scorcher. In short, “it’s huge and big…it’s bigger than huge”, and if you like Slayer and/or Vio-Lence and/or Death Angel on ANY level, you are really going to enjoy this album. 

Time to break out your “Jean-Claude Van Damme banned band bandana” as we unveil what the next Doomsicle cover will be (and who’s gonna “dress up as Peter Criss”). Find out who 100% “allegedly” has a beef with E.T. For over 30 years, the mighty minstrels from Maryland known collectively as CLUTCH have been synthesizing sonic goodness that defies categorization, capturing all of the greatest nuances and attitude of 70’s classic rock from “The Days of Yore” and seamlessly blending that together with ingeniously crafted lyrical ciphers and modern-day stoner metal intensity into a single, heavy, wall of sonic potency that doesn’t neatly fit into any specific genre.

For SLAYER fans, their merciless 1983 debut SHOW NO MERCY and their even darker, more progressive 1985 follow up HELL AWAITS both possess a somewhat more sinister sound and atmosphere relative to the totality of their catalog. These first two records mark the beginning of their development into the fiercest, darkest, and evilest of The Big Four of thrash, featuring a virtually continuous “all-you-can-eat” onslaught of death, Hell, and Satan.

A house is supposed to be a safe, sane sanctuary from the evil and insanity relentlessly lurking around every corner of the outside world. However, hearing eerily unnatural sounds and witnessing uncanny otherworldly phenomenon (especially at night, right next to your bedroom) can be an extremely unsettling and terrifyingly traumatic experience, especially as a child. In the case of KING DIAMOND’s 3rd studio shock opera, “THEM”, the house of Amon (just like Grandma) is anything but safe or sane. 

“THEM” is an even more bloodcurdling, terrifying example of the vividly cinematic, spine-tingling ghost story telling style masterfully executed on “Abigail”, The King’s previous release, which recounts a chilling and disturbingly horrific tale about his criminally insane grandmother who returns home after a long stay at an insane asylum to reconnect with her supernatural, demonic “friends” from darker dimensions over a pot of unholy tea.  In short, “THEM” is analogous to “The Exorcist”:  a haunting, timeless horror classic that has yet to be matched or surpassed.
