#373 Venom Into Oblivion Album Review: A Fitting Farewell to Cronos
Épisode 374
jeudi 15 octobre 2026 • Durée 01:01:34
“It sucks that he’s gone, but what a legacy!”
The recent passing of VENOM bassist & frontman Conrad “Cronos” Lant came as an unexpected shock, especially given the recent release of INTO OBLIVION, the 16th and final album from the godfathers of extreme metal and undoubtedly the most well produced and best sounding album in the band’s discography.
Released May 1, 2026, and featuring all of the signature elements that VENOM fans would expect, INTO OBLIVION sounds modern without sounding dated and maintains the themes & imagery of darkness and evil that have been the band’s calling card for nearly half a century.
Prepare to hear us butcher the name of Hurricane Isaias, get ready to brush up on your Latin skills, and find out why your VENOM friends were always scarier (and much cooler) than your other friends when you JOIN US as we celebrate the legacy of Cronos and dive deep INTO OBLIVION.
“Wait a minute…he said ‘we’ve got Phil’…we’ve got a new Phil…that’s not even Phil, that’s Phillip…man…” / “Speaking of Norvyn, I’ve got a good video that he sent…”
“They’ve been around so long they’ve influenced themselves…” (45+ years since the release of Black Metal)
“That’s the best guitar player they’ve ever had…”
“Was that a whistle…like a Molly Hatchet (Flirtin’ With Disaster) whistle!?”
“We’re 5 tracks into this thing…what was (Venom’s) last album before this one (with Cronos)?”
“We are so wrong…” /
CORRECTION: Tony Dolan (Demolition Man) is very much alive and very much NOT dead.
“Here’s the tuning…C# Standard…this ain’t no dropping the E string…”
NOTE: It’s tuned a whole step down from E♭…it’s tuned 1.5 steps down (from standard pitch) …
“Wow, that was fucking boring!” #THCOCD
“It’s on track to being…it’s on the fast track to getting the #Coroner treatment…if you’re gonna start with Venom, I’d almost suggest starting here and then going directly to Black Metal…”
“All that to say…this is fast tracking into the Coroner Dissonance Theory territory…in terms of production…”
(36:25): AS ABOVE SO BELOW
“Now THAT’s fucking Venom…”
“Venom is never gonna be Coroner…based on the production, I think I would start here…”
“Daemon Est Deus Inversus…” #Latin
(39:03): Track 7 KICKED OUTTA HELL
“He sounds possessed…that’s what I like about him…”
“It sounds like 1989…I can hear it on WREKage…”
“That little Latin sounding part in the chorus…is a Latin aphorism meaning: ‘The devil is God inverted’…
“You just learned Latin…”
(41:24): LEGEND
“Nice squealies…it gives it a nice creepiness…it enhances the creepiness…”
“The production makes the riffs sound WAY bigger & bulked out…”
“That almost sounds a little like Tom G. (Warrior - Celtic Frost) right there…”
“Track 10…that’s what we should name the podcast…”
(44:02): LIVE LOUD
“Got some Tommy Victor (Prong) going on there with the pinch harmonics…”
“They’ve gotta have the double bass, always, it’s gotta be there…”
“(Live Loud) is the closest you’ll ever get to a Venom pop song.”
“I think the whole sound (the production) is what made them campy sounding…the production was almost…laughable…”
(46:56): METAL BLOODY METAL
“This is White Zombie…”
“It sounds modern without sounding dated…it’s still dark and serious…”
The guitar player’s name is Stuart “Rage” Dixon: 2007 to present.
NOTE: There was a remix of the Black Metal track in 2005.
(49:46): DOGS OF WAR
“It’s noisy…”
“If you tuned all that up to E it would be kinda ‘meh’…it wouldn’t have the evil darkness and the heaviness to it…”
(51:21): DEATHWITCH
“Listen to that tone, dude…those are some live sounding drums…I was about to say: they’re in the room…”
“I’d say they struck guitar player gold with (Rage)…he’s got all the things, and he can do all the stuff…”
“There’s a lot of layers…there’s 3 members in that band and I just heard 4 guitar players…”
(54:16): UNHOLY MOTHER
“Do I sense a progressive type song? Melodic?”
“Cronos will figure out a way to ugly it up…in a good way.”
“It kinda feels like you shouldn’t be listening to it…”
“What a great legacy to leave behind…” / RIP Conrad “Cronos” Lant
“(Cronos) had some cool boots…”

#372 1976: Year in Metal (50 Years Later) — AC/DC, Rush, KISS, Judas Priest & More
Épisode 373
jeudi 8 octobre 2026 • Durée 57:04
1976. The year of the American Bicentennial. The year that brought us “The Tale of Two Steves” (Jobs & Wozniak) who created the Apple Computer Company, Evel Knievel who successfully jumped 7 Greyhound Buses at the Kingdome in Seattle, and Bruce Jenner who took home the gold in the men’s decathlon at the Summer Olympics in Montreal.
1976 was all about being “on the train to Bangkok” and getting “super Asian” (so to speak) in your buddy’s Trans Am before catching The Song Remains The Same at the Midnight Movies. It was the year that brought us Kansas’ progressive “pre-metal” breakthrough masterpiece, Leftoverture, the year of not one but two (count ‘em, TWO!) KISS releases in the same year, and also the year that brought us perhaps the strangest and most misunderstood Black Sabbath album of the 1970’s.
Fast forward fifty years to 2026. America is now a quarter of a millennium old, and since 1976, we’ve gone from albums to 8-tracks…to cassettes…to compact discs…to streaming…and now BACK to albums, cassettes, and CD’s again, with music consumers and die-hard music fans enjoying a bit of a renaissance as they rediscover the joy of purchasing physical media and reading the lyric sheet & taking in the vibe of the album art all while listening to the music and being simultaneously transported to a completely different time and dimension…specifically, 1976.
Get ready for the weirdest question EVER from the world’s biggest KISS fan, understand why front AND back album art is so important, find out who James Hetfield’s long lost uncle probably might be, discover the endless joy of finding a “project band” (regardless if you’re from “Lebanon…Libya…or Lisbon”), and prepare for the most gloriously orchestrated “palette cleanser” you’ve ever experienced when you JOIN US as we go back to the 70’s and revisit the hard rock and pre-metal glory days of the CLASS OF 1976.
#371 Black Sabbath — Technical Ecstasy Album Review: 50 Years of the Most Divisive Sabbath Record
Épisode 372
jeudi 1 octobre 2026 • Durée 01:00:48
“Was it as good as The First Six? No…”
Released on September 25, 1976 (exactly 4 years to the day after the release of Vol. 4), TECHNICAL ECSTASY, the 7th album by the mighty BLACK SABBATH, is one of the most mysterious, polarizing, and perhaps confusing albums from the legendary Ozzy Osbourne era of the band.
First of all, the album cover depicts two robots having a fling and exchanging “lubricants” with each other on an escalator; a pretty massive departure from the darker album art featured on any of The First Six albums.
And then there’s the track listing, which is almost as bizarre and mysterious as the album art. Depending on which version of the album you have, Side 2 might actually be Side 1…or it might not be. So, if this feels like a Mandela Effect moment to you, then you’re not wrong.
“Does it need to be part of the Sabbath canon? Yes.”
Sonically, TECHNICAL ECSTASY is a far more experimental and rock and roll version of Sabbath than any other album in their discography, and yet somehow seems strangely out of sequence relative to The First Six. In fact, the more experimental, progressive sound found on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (which, in and of itself, is quite a departure from the darker, heavier sound of The First Four) almost seems like a more natural predecessor to TECHNICAL ECSTASY than Sabotage.
Either way, it IS part of Black Sabbath & Ozzy Osbourne history and given the 50th anniversary of its release (and, ironically, the 5th anniversary of the Steven Wilson Remix which was released on October 1, 2021), we felt it necessary to give this album another spin and see if we could figure out what we’ve been missing all these years.
#370 Anthrax — Cursum Perficio Album Review: The Decade-Long Wait Is Over
Épisode 371
jeudi 24 septembre 2026 • Durée 01:03:28
A lot can happen in a decade…
If you go back to 2016 and mention the terms “TikTok” or “AI Slop” in casual conversation, nobody will have any idea what you’re talking about, mainly because TikTok had just launched and the AI Slop that we’ve all come to know and loathe was still a few years away from becoming a nightmarish reality.
Released September 18, 2026, CURSUM PERFICIO, the 12th studio album by New York thrash veterans ANTHRAX, represents the band’s first new music since 2016’s For All Kings and a return to the world of metal with easily the most unusual album title and bizarre album artwork of their entire catalog.
To be fair, one shan’t judge an album by its name or its artwork alone. CURSUM PERFICIO has a nice variety of old school “ThrashThrax” moments mixed in with darker, heavier tracks that would sound right at home on Persistence of Time or Among The Living. And just to make your brain numb with wonder, there’s one track with such complex time signature changes that it literally sounds as mind boggling as imagining “if math was a color”.
Overall, it’s a grower, and while it does contain elements from their entire back catalog in terms of sound, there is a unique sonic quality present that properly defines ANTHRAX here and now, in the mid 2020’s. The songs have a deceptively streamlined flow to them that are lean on riffs yet potent in their arrangement and delivery. Basically, if you’re an Anthrax fan, you’re going to enjoy this album. And if CURSUM PERFICIO is your very first Anthrax experience, then you have a long, enjoyable journey ahead of you to go back through their entire discography to see how everything fits into the content and context of this album.
Hear one of the most appreciated listener appreciation voicemails we’ve ever received, discover our pick for “album of the decade”, find out how “gray haired loads” can instantly transform any casual conversation into something altogether disgusting, discover our new “Patreon After Dark” that’s exclusively available “in the middle of the night”, and just know that Mike Tyson’s pronunciation of this album is the proper way to say it when you JOIN US in the Bunkerpoon Center For Metal Excellence as we give a listen to CURSUM PERFICIO.
#369 Pantera — Death Match: Vulgar Display of Power vs Far Beyond Driven
Épisode 370
jeudi 17 septembre 2026 • Durée 01:39:17
It’s DEATH MATCH season again, and it’s time to take two of the very best PANTERA albums and make them battle it out in the Bunkerpoon Octagon, featuring 1992’s multi-platinum VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER against the 1994 Billboard Number 1 follow-up, FAR BEYOND DRIVEN.
VULGAR was under construction throughout the band’s relentless tour for Cowboys From Hell in the states and following their legendary performance at the Monsters of Rock show in Moscow at Tushino airfield in 1991 in front of more than a million people after the fall of the Soviet Union. Possessing a far heavier, angrier, and potent sound than its predecessor, VULGAR had just raised the bar for metal and perfected the power groove metal sound that began on Cowboys.
DRIVEN, much like VULGAR, progressed forward in the same fashion, with a much more aggressive production quality and a sound that is effectively the hairier, darker, and uglier follow up to Vulgar with just as much of a beautifully brutal assault on the senses, not to mention an exponentially more intense album cover (NO, not THAT one! The OTHER one…but also…definitely THAT one, for sure!)
It’s time to throw down the gauntlet and unleash hell in the Bunkerpoon Octagon, because the time has come to pass judgment and “there can be only one” to reign victorious.
So “take your shoes off if you need to” and “get your Book of Sevens out” before you JOIN US to find out THE WINNER of this PANTERA HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH, featuring two of the finest back-to-back Terry Date produced albums in metal history: VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER & FAR BEYOND DRIVEN.
#368 Mastodon — Marrow Deep Album Review: Atlanta's Own Returns
Épisode 369
jeudi 10 septembre 2026 • Durée 01:22:25
Very few bands in the history of recorded music have managed to maintain the same lineup for as long as Atlanta, Georgia’s own progressive metal titans, MASTODON. After Brent Hinds’ departure from the band in 2025 and the tragic permanence of his untimely demise which followed just a few months later, it seemed that after 25 years the band which Brann Dailor, Bill Kelliher, and Troy Sanders had launched with Hinds was finished.
Thankfully, the remaining three were able to transmute their tragedy into a new era for the band by introducing two new members (Nick Johnston on guitar & João Nogueira on keyboards) and crafting one of the most powerful comeback albums of all time with MARROW DEEP, the band’s 9th studio album and perhaps one of their most well rounded and progressive albums to date.
There are so many layers to this album that it’s nigh impossible to digest it all in one single listen. With familiar sonic textures, elements, and themes that span all the way through the band’s catalog (from Remission to Hushed and Grim) combined with the contributions of Nick Johnston and João Nogueira, MARROW DEEP possesses an almost darker, 70’s flavored progressive quality, making the album a mountaintop moment for “Mastodon 2.0” and resulting in one of the finest and most sophisticated albums of the band’s career.
Buckle up and get ready to find out which disgusting sounding form of hydration is actually “closer to broth”, always remember that releasing an album on 9/11 will ensure that you “never forget”, and prepare for a reading from “The Book of Sevens” when you JOIN US as we dive into what may very well be a contender for Album of the Year with MARROW DEEP from MASTODON.
#367 S.O.D. — Speak English or Die: The Crossover Thrash Album That Started It All
Épisode 368
jeudi 3 septembre 2026 • Durée 01:04:58
In early July 1985, ¾ (or 75%) of the “Fistful of Metal” era of Anthrax (Charlie Benante, Scott Ian, and Dan Lilker) joined Billy Milano in the studio to form the legendary crossover thrash band S.O.D. (aka STORMTROOPERS OF DEATH) and in less than one week, recorded and mixed one of the most notoriously hilarious thrash albums of all time, SPEAK ENGLISH OR DIE.
In the highly unlikely event that you’re thinking “I don’t think I’ve ever heard of S.O.D…”, just think back to the good old days of Headbangers Ball in the late 80’s, with all of the vintage black and white film footage of trains slamming into each other head on, rodeos gone wrong, cars crashing, and failed BMX stunts. The bumper music that was the soundtrack to all of that visual chaos was actually from SPEAK ENGLISH OR DIE.
If you’re going to Rocklahoma this year, please be sure to stop by Camp Corruption and say “High” for us, get fully and properly relaxed, and then prepare to “blast ABBA in the middle of the night” before you JOIN US for a walk down metal memory lane as we celebrate one of the finest, rawest, and funniest albums in thrash metal history as we attempt to SPEAK ENGLISH OR DIE talking about STORMTROOPERS OF DEATH.

#366 Down Helmet STRAP IT DOWN TOUR Concert Review
Épisode 367
jeudi 27 août 2026 • Durée 01:09:10
“On a scale of 1 to 5 Honks, how many Honks would you give it…for their performance at the show?”
The STRAP IT DOWN TOUR (featuring Spirit In The Room, Helmet, and Down) kicked off in relentlessly heavy fashion on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at The Eastern in Atlanta, Georgia, and we made our way down into the heart of the city to experience opening night firsthand, in the flesh.
“I don’t wanna say anything off-putting…”
The turnout was incredible, the venue was awesome, and the whole vibe of the entire evening was perfectly dialed in, with merch lines resembling what one might see at an amusement park and well-rehearsed, tight performances from each of the bands that were delivered loud and crystal clear (yet “not necessacelery” so loud that we were all “screaming at each other and not listening”), with the final crescendo of the evening being a massive jam that can only be described as “controlled chaos” as EVERYONE in the first two bands took the stage and proceeded to jam with Down on the outro to “Bury Me In Smoke” until the riffs and the grooves left everyone with a contact high.
“Man, I hate those things!”
Get ready for a taste of the brand-new DOWN tune, Blood Oath, remember why you should NEVER put your concert shirts in the dryer after you wash them, discover why being ultra “relaxed” is the only way to EVER travel in a Waymo, and get ready for some BONUS concert reflections worth its weight in Honks when you JOIN US as we share our post-game wrap-up of the first night of the STRAP IT DOWN TOUR!
#365 Prong — Inside the 90s: Beg to Differ, The Cleansing & Rude Awakening
Épisode 366
jeudi 20 août 2026 • Durée 01:16:56
New York City. A place where the subways never close, you can hit any deli, diner, or pizzeria in town at all hours (“in the middle of the night”) for a bite to eat, and your soul will become properly calloused with a “G.F.Y.” mentality and attitude in the most hard core, New York way imaginable.
And when it comes to infusing that kind of attitude into metal, NYC’s PRONG has quite literally turned that into an artform.
Formed in “The City That Never Sleeps” in 1986, PRONG had two independent releases (Primitive Origins in 1987 & Force Fed in 1988) before signing to Epic records in 1989.
With a sonic palette consisting of crossover thrash which would eventually morph into the “then” emerging sound of groove metal* combined with subtly understated industrial soundscapes, PRONG would become one of the earliest crossover bands to blend thrash, groove, and industrial metal into a unique, attitude driven style that would heavily impact the next wave of metal to come in the 90’s.
Get yourself a taste of the brand-new single “The Banner” from Prong’s forthcoming self-titled album, realize that snakes “roll around and do stuff” just like people do (“in the middle of the night”) and get ready for a special, remixed edition of the Outro Reel that will absolutely leave you breathless when you JOIN US as we go INSIDE THE 90’s with PRONG.
(*Yes, even before that other groove metal band from the 90’s whose name also starts with the letter “P”).
#364 DOWN & Helmet — Strap It Down Tour Pre-Game: Atlanta 2026
Épisode 365
jeudi 13 août 2026 • Durée 01:14:25
“It’s been a while since we’ve been to a show together…”
The STRAP IT DOWN Summer Tour kicks off on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at The Eastern in Atlanta, Georgia, featuring DOWN, HELMET, & SPIRIT IN THE ROOM, so naturally, we decided to engage in a little PRE-GAME preparation to get in the right headspace for the show.
As you may recall, we last traveled to The Eastern back in 2024 when we saw King Diamond and Overkill, and the sound and layout of the venue made for one of the best concert experiences we’ve had in quite some time. Having said that, we are equally excited to get to see DOWN & HELMET on the first date of this tour at this venue as this show (and tour) promises to be one of the most crushing metal events of the summer.
Always remember that when you’re buying tour shirts to “get ‘em big, because when you do laundry, things shrink”. Find out who’s getting the “hog slap” and discover which podcast makes “laying face down more enjoyable” when you JOIN US for the PRE-GAME show as we kick things off in preparation for the STRAP IT DOWN Summer Tour featuring DOWN & HELMET.

“In terms of what would sound the best: Vol.4, Sabotage, then Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and then this…do you think Never Say Die would still sound right after (Technical Ecstasy) or do you think would it be better after Sabbath Bloody Sabbath?

“That sounds like King Diamond…in a weird way…it’s like a rock opera…” (NOTE: this part sounds very reminiscent of the end of Dream Theater’s Fatal Tragedy)
“See, now THAT sounds like Sabbath…that’s kinda got a Sabotage vibe to it…”
NOTE: Tony Iommi produced the album, there were no outside producers
“I’m not a big fan of ‘stroking the shaft and cradling the balls’ of the algorithm…but I also understand ‘we don’t want to starve to death…’”
“They’ve already done all of that…and they’re artists, they want to create new things…”

“You play CDs? Alright…to me it seems kinda laborous…and bulky…” / #physicalmedia
(50:25): “Track 7…OR Track 3…depending on your pressing.”
SHE’S GONE
“This is actually a beautiful and terribly depressing ballad, but the acoustic sound is perfect…it’s so clean”.
“It’s dark…kinda gives me that Solitude vibe…”
“I wanted you to be my wife…” (“Awww, what a fucking line!”)
“There’s a demo version of this (on Instagram) with clean electric guitar…but it had drums…and different lyrics…”
