What’s this episode about?

Pamela and Steven observe and discuss a chaotic scene from the musical - a blind date between our main character Jennifer and ‘Nigel’. It’s a car crash waiting to happen.

Neither Jennifer or Nigel are cut out for starting a new relationship right now - It’s funny but tragic at the same time.

Jennifer enters this date emotionally fragile. Not broken, bruised. She still wants James her free agent. She hasn’t emotionally detached yet. So this date with Nigel isn’t neutral. It’s already loaded.

Nigel is comical, though psychologically fascinating. He represents: Social inexperience, late emotional rebellion, Nigel’s behaviour isn’t confident. He’s trying to make up for lost time. Fast and reckless.  

Jennifer is left disappointed, uncomfortable, embarrassed, emotionally exhausted

What assumptions do we make about strength, gender or power?

Follow the transition of Zahida one of the musical’s main female characters, who is currently going through a divorce.

• Zahida’s song “Stop Gap Guy” sounds playful on the surface—swing, sassy, energy, however, underneath, it whispers:   “Don’t come too close. I’ve been burned before.”

• On the surface: Freedom. Is she choosing freedom OR avoiding pain?  Independence  - No commitment

• Underneath: Hurt.  Disappointment. Fear of trusting again

• Zahida isn’t wrong, she’s reacting and reactions often come from wounds that haven’t healed yet.

• Her journey isn’t about rejecting men. It’s about rediscovering trust.
