Yacht Insurance: What Every Owner Needs to Know
Saison 9 · Épisode 6
jeudi 28 août 2025 • Durée 16:37
We love fan mail: text us with your feedback and ideas
"It only takes one hurricane, one accident, or one equipment failure to change everything." Those sobering words set the tone for this essential conversation with risk management expert Rob Carron about protecting your yacht investment and the people who help you enjoy it.
For example, yacht owners face critical insurance considerations when planning yard periods during hurricane season in high-risk areas. Rob explains how timing these maintenance periods without proper insurance consultation can lead to shocking premium increases, doubled deductibles, or even complete coverage exclusions. His practical advice includes early planning and transparent communication with your broker before making commitments.
The discussion takes a deep dive into emerging concerns around lithium-ion battery fires, which have plagued the industry recently. Rob outlines how independent risk assessment surveys can identify potential hazards before they become disasters, and details how some insurers are now requiring specific battery management protocols. Similarly, owners planning to tow tenders need awareness of the specialized insurance requirements that apply, from tracking devices to weather limitations.
Beyond physical assets, Rob emphasizes that crew protection remains paramount through proper employment agreements. These documents should clearly outline obligations during illness or injury, providing security for both crew and owners. On a positive note, the conversation highlights how crew wellness programs are increasingly recognized by insurers as valuable risk mitigation tools, improving safety while boosting morale.
Whether you're a seasoned yacht owner or considering your first vessel, this episode delivers crucial insights that could save you from significant financial and personal headaches. Listen now to ensure your yachting passion remains protected through proper planning, documentation, and insurance coverage.

From Mushrooms to Luxury: Reimagining Superyachts With Verge Yacht Design
Saison 9 · Épisode 5
lundi 2 juin 2025 • Durée 19:11
We love fan mail: text us with your feedback and ideas
The beauty of yacht interiors often steals the spotlight, but what happens when we approach design from a completely different angle? Anita Rivera-Turcotte, founder of Verge Yacht Design, brings a novel perspective to yacht interiors that places engineering and function squarely before style.
From their studio in Savannah, Georgia, Anita and her team blend interior design expertise with naval architecture to create spaces that work flawlessly while looking stunning. "Anybody can make something pretty," she explains, "but let's make it work for that specific owner and that crew." This philosophy stems from understanding that beautiful design must always respect a vessel's operational needs first.
What truly sets Verge Yacht Design apart is the studio's groundbreaking work with sustainable materials. Forget the notion that sustainability means compromise – Anita's team develops fabrics from mushrooms, crushed stones, and corn husks that rival traditional luxury materials in both aesthetics and performance. "I feel like sometimes people look at sustainability and automatically think a dollar sign," she notes, "and that is not the case at all." Through biomimicry and innovative processes, Verge Yacht Design is proving that yacht interiors can be responsible without sacrificing an ounce of luxury.
Beyond their design work, the studio team is actively shaping yachting's future through mentorship programs with the Savannah College of Art and Design, introducing bright young minds to the industry. And when asked what yacht owners ultimately want? Anita doesn't hesitate: "Experience." It's the perfect word to encapsulate Verge's holistic approach – creating vessels that function beautifully, respect both people and planet, and deliver unforgettable moments on the water.
Ready to discover how function, sustainability, and beauty can harmoniously coexist in yacht design? Visit vergeyachtdesign.com to explore their progressive approach to creating extraordinary yacht experiences.

Hot Lab, "Architecture for Voyagers"
Saison 7 · Épisode 7
mercredi 31 mai 2023 • Durée 24:33
We love fan mail: text us with your feedback and ideas
Back in 2004, two ambitious young men from Italy created Hot Lab, a yacht-design studio with equally big ambitions. Fast forward to today, and Hot Lab has grown not only to have nearly a dozen people under its roof, but also to have clients and primarily fully custom yachts on the water and in build around the world. Additionally, and importantly, Hot Lab focuses on more than simply superyacht décor. The studio’s tag line, “Architecture for Voyagers,” lends a little insight into the difference.
In this episode of Megayacht News Radio, Hot Lab’s co-founder, Antonio Romano, explains how the tagline is the guiding principle for everything the studio does. He further explains:
· why Hot Lab decided to pursue yachting, despite Romano never having been aboard a boat
· how the studio landed its first contract (a great story, too)
· what “Architecture for Voyagers” means, and how it differentiates what the studio does
· why family is at the center of everything for superyacht owners, in the studio’s experience.

Saison 7 · Épisode 6
mardi 16 mai 2023 • Durée 26:23
We love fan mail: text us with your feedback and ideas
If you’re a longtime listener, you may remember a few years ago we welcomed Andrew Grant Super of Berkeley Rand to the podcast, to talk about what was then a new concept: having “experiential engineers” create off-grid superyacht experiences for owners and guests through immersive technology and artificial intelligence. Well, a lot has changed since that conversation back in 2000. Berkeley Rand is even more aptly called an experiential adventure company, and it’s creating experiences in well-traveled destinations as well as the far-off ones.
In this episode, we talk to Andrew about what exactly this means, as well as how Andrew and his team are delivering what yacht owners and guests want—even when they themselves don’t initially realize the possibilities.
