In Jerry We Trust? - Meet at the Mitt Podcast31 Aug 202401:04:46
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Anders Jorstad, Zach Mason and Evan James are here on Friday August 30th to talk mutiny aboard the good ship Mariner. The Tacoma News Tribune (and other sources) aired some grievances with Jerry Dipoto in the wake of Scott Servais’s unceremonious dismissal. How do we evaluate the decisions behind the 2024 offense moving forward? Does Jerry still deserve to helm the ship? Is the grass always greener? What extreme measures could the team take to improve for 2025? https://mybookie.website/MeetAtTheMitt TWITTER LINKS: https://twitter.com/MeetattheMitt https://twitter.com/LookoutLanding https://twitter.com/JohnTrupin https://twitter.com/KatePreusser https://twitter.com/EvanJamesAudio https://twitter.com/AndersJorstad https://twitter.com/RealZachMason https://macdougallbats.com/ We are partnering with MY BOOKIE to give you an extra 50% on your first deposit! They Might Be Mariners: 2024 Draft Edition - Meet at the Mitt Podcast13 Jul 202401:52:02
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! John Trupin, Kate Preusser are joined by Lookout Landing prospect expert Max Ellingsen on July 13th to talk future stars at the halfway point in the minor league season. Max has been spending time watching the Everett Aquasox, getting to see the much heralded Lazaro Montes and Michael Arroyo in person. Max remarks on improved athleticism and movement from our future star and Kate points out that Lazaro has unfairly been given the “big boy” speed tax based on his size. Kate says Aidan Smith in the fourth round was the Mariners biggest draft steal in recent years, next to Logan Evans and Brandon Garcia. The gang reflects on the Fangraphs prospect rankings and the differences in perception on some of the higher profile names (Arroyo, Ford, Morales). Finally we shift to looking at the draft and a world of possible selections. Does the team add young arms to begin the next rotation? Could a surprise college bat make an impact right away? Which teams might be looking to draft similar players and could foil the plot? https://mybookie.website/MeetAtTheMitt TWITTER LINKS: https://twitter.com/MeetattheMitt https://twitter.com/LookoutLanding https://twitter.com/JohnTrupin https://twitter.com/KatePreusser https://twitter.com/EvanJamesAudio https://twitter.com/AndersJorstad https://twitter.com/RealZachMason https://x.com/EllingsenMax18 https://macdougallbats.com/ We are partnering with MY BOOKIE to give you an extra 50% on your first deposit! Undefeated In Seattle - Can It Get Any Better? Meet at the Mitt Podcast01 Apr 202300:51:21
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Anders, Zach Mason and Evan James are here for the Meet At The Mitt episode 2! Opening day is in the books and the Mariners are undefeated. First off, ZAM tells the truths of the Brash pitch heard round the world, with an article on the magic of that at bat coming in the next days. Everyone collectively remains unconcerned about Tommy La Stella while looking very much forward to the impending debut of Cooper Hummel. Evan refers to Hummel as a “switch blade player” instead of “Swiss army knife” in a fever ridden fugue state. Zach draws a compelling comparison between last night and one of George Clooney’s most iconic scenes from ER (Evan cannot remember GREYS ANATOMY). Everyone raves about Julio’s rise this offseason and his continued prominence in the local and national media. Jarred Kelenic gets thumbs up all around for a strong night at the plate, on the base paths and in the outfield. Finally, huge thanks to our new sponsor MacDougall Bats! Hello Seattle Mariners fans! John, Kate and Evan are here for the Meet At The Mitt debut episode! With only 8 days to go before opening day the 26 man roster has begun to crystalize. The crew kicks off with the little AL west preview and fond memories of Sports Illustrated now that our new King has risen to his rightful throne (Julio on the cover). Evan makes his case for the Rangers and Angels being a washed rivalry but Kate remains vigilant in a competitive AL West, choosing not to underestimate the competition. Between the Angels and Rangers who do you think poses the bigger threat to the Mariners playoff hopes? Lastly we wrap with Kate giving her finest, most cost conscious and gluten free picks from a smattering of new menu options at T-Mobile Park for the upcoming season. Be sure to let whoever you can know that the Mariners owe us money for both Chaos Ball and Ham Swaggerty, we will accept Titos and sandwich sponsorship as recompense for our deep and invaluable contributions to the lore.   TWITTER LINKS: https://twitter.com/LookoutLanding https://twitter.com/JohnTrupin https://twitter.com/KatePreusser https://twitter.com/EvanJamesAudio https://twitter.com/AndersJorstad https://twitter.com/RealZachMason Learn more about your ad choices. PECOTA Pessimism - How Will The Mariners Beat The Projections? Lookout Landing Podcast19 Feb 202301:19:04
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Kate, Evan and John are here to bask in the early glow of spring training. Pitchers, catchers, coaches, Jerry, the gang is all out in Peoria warming up for the much anticipated sequel to the highly rated, award winning 2022 season. First Kate expresses her concerns over the fate of many in The Last Of Us, but she will find no solace nor reprieve in the fates of those entwined. Once the Mariners eventually come up, topics from Twitter like Evan White, mystery pitches and some striking style from Tom Murphy make the cut. The whole gang wonders about the PECOTA projections for the Mariners and wonder if it could be underestimating a young team. Do you agree with the PECOTA projections or do you believe in the Mariners? There is much due fawning over Julio’s new commercials for Topps baseball cards with great anticipation for his even more awesome star power yet to come. How will Julio improve in 2023? Everyone has a different but equally exciting answer. Lastly, Kate confirms she is not hard and would not last long in a zombie apocalypse. Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Kate, Evan and John are all back together to talk Seattle baseball as Spring Training closes in. In lieu of more pressing news from the team at this juncture, the crew has opted for a spattering of listener questions from twitter. First up there is much banter about the new rules: bigger bases, no shifts and pitch clocks. How will Mariners pitchers adapt? Who will be most affected by the changes? Will there be unintended consequences? Possibilities abound. Next up, the big news of the week has landed: Mariners local legend Leonys Martín has landed a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. We reminisce about Leonys walk off dingers of yore, and try to find a diamond in the pile of rough that is the Non-Roster Invitees. New World Order of the Phoenix - Is Felnin Celesten A Future Seattle Superstar?: Lookout Landing Podcast18 Jan 202301:40:10
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! The whole crew Kate, John and Evan are back in for the second podcast of 2023, basking in the afterglow of the freshly finished Seattle Seahawks season and looking ahead to spring training just around the corner. First up, "the Phoenix" Felnin Celsten is finally here. After what feels like 2 plus years of speculation linking the top international prospect to the team, the deal has finally come to fruition. Next up Kate gives a deeper analysis on Dylan Wilson out of Curaçao and notes the Mariners success in drafting out of Venezuela (Felix!). John ponders the Mariners success with international pitchers and the tangled web it weaves. Next the whole gang answers twitter questions for our wonderful listeners and diagnoses the fix for the Seattle Mariners arbitration cases. Are you nervous about the negotiations with Teoscar in arbitration? Would you extend him now, or early in the season, or do you let him walk? A Load of Pollock - Is AJ the Final Piece of a Playoff Run?: Lookout Landing Podcast11 Jan 202301:29:38
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! The whole crew Kate, John and Evan are back in a new year with a new flow to dig into an all new, fully decked out Mariners squad. First up, newest Mariner AJ Pollock gets an extended break down, as we look back at Zach Mason’s article on his very specific platoon splits and what it could all mean for Jarred’s playing time. Next Kate looks at Justin Topa: 2023 bullpen man of mystery. With only 18 major league innings in three years is he a wild card/dark horse to break out in the bullpen? Finally the whole crew asks the question: is this it for the Mariners? If not, who is still out there? John throws out a few names of outfielders available via trade who could raise the floor. Lastly we look forward to a new season with spring training on the horizon. What are you most looking forward to seeing when the team comes back for camp? Are Mariners Fans Greedy?: Lookout Landing Podcast 21218 Dec 202201:56:59
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! The whole crew Kate, John and Evan are back to discuss the discord in the Mariner discourse. Beginning with some strange comments from Jerry out of the Winter Meetings, onto a much maligned Mike Salk article on 710 and wrapping up with scathing comments from Jeff Passan about how “greedy” Mariners fans are wanting the team to invest, there is much to discuss. Where do you stand on the Mariners spending? Do you trust the plan? Do you think the team still has moves to make, or is this it? How did you respond to Jerry’s comments? Let us know how you’ve been responding to the discourse in the comments below. Lastly, the crew dives into a pool of Twitter question about outfielders, free agents and former uber prospect Jarred Kelenic.   TWITTER LINKS: https://twitter.com/LookoutLanding https://twitter.com/JohnTrupin https://twitter.com/KatePreusser https://twitter.com/EvanJamesAudio Learn more about your ad choices. Sorcerer Supreme In Seattle: Lookout Landing Podcast 21104 Dec 202201:16:06
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Trader Jerry strikes again! After adding Teoscar Hernandez several weeks ago, the Mariners have continued to forge the 2023 roster by acquiring long-rumored Mariner and much needed second baseman Kolten Wong in exchange for struggling prospect Abraham Toro and Jesse “change of scenery” Winker. The crew Kate Preusser and John Trupin are here (Evan is out sick) to fit all the pieces together and see how the Mariners currently stack up against their primary competition: The Houston Astros (who just signed Jose Abreu) and the Texas Rangers (who just signed Jacob deGrom). While this trade seemingly closes the door on signing one of the big ticket free agent infielders, it also closes a big hole in the Mariners infield and opens up the possibility to use prospects and free agent dollars to add at other positions. With some interesting options available on the trade market, do you think this was the right strategy for the team? Who would you like to see the team acquire (Brian Reynolds) or sign (Mitch “for Mayor” Haniger) in the wake of this trade? Do you think Aaron Judge gets a full 10 year deal? What do you make of Kolten Wong's strage defensive season in 2022? Crank up the heat and let the hot stove cook! The 2022 Lookout Landing Awards Show23 Nov 202201:32:25
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! The crew Kate Preusser and John Trupin are joined by staff writer Zach Mason to uncover the secrets of The Lookout Landing Awards. But first up, the crew analyzes the Kyle Lewis for Cooper Hummel trade, noting how hard the road in Seattle has been for Kyle. Zach espouses a deeply dangerous opinion on Taylor Swift. Do you think Taylor Swift live lives up to the hype? Are you rooting for Kyle Lewis: Arizona Diamondbacks DH? Tell us your favorite memory of the 2019 rookie of the year in the comments below. Zach smoothly segues into the 2022 Lookout Landing Awards, aka “The Lookies”, formerly “The Landies”. Prospect of the Year, goes to a rising pitcher star, but Kate reminds all that Harry Ford had a star making season in his own right. Everyone collectively glows over man and the vibe that is Eugenio Suarez, Mariners legend. Macklemore catches a little shade but Luis Castillo gets his flowers for a sterling introductory season in Seattle. Cal Raleigh rightfully takes the Hit of the Year award and honestly, we’re it up to me, I’d have broken ground on the statue already. Where does Cal’s broken hand, curse shattering, walk off home run rank for you in all of Mariner lore? Julio wins most of the rest of the awards because, well…you know. John remarks that Julio is rated for the 3rd highest WAR in baseball for 2023, his age 22 season. From making the team out of spring training to the home run derby all the way into fabled, October baseball in Seattle, 2022 was The Season of Julio. Obviously it’s tough to distill so much greatness down to a single moment, but tell us what was your favorite Julio play from this past season? Who would you have voted for in any of these categories? Tell us in the comments below. Lastly the crew offer their favorite Thanksgiving dishes and a Mariners player who embodies the qualities of said meal. Do you have a Mariner you associate with a specific food? Note: John’s audio desyncs a little bit in the first half, so there’s a bit of cross talk, but it’s mostly just lolzing.   TWITTER LINKS: https://twitter.com/LookoutLanding https://twitter.com/JohnTrupin https://twitter.com/KatePreusser https://twitter.com/EvanJamesAudio https://twitter.com/RealZachMason Learn more about your ad choices. Scott Was Robbed: Lookout Landing Podcast 21016 Nov 202201:27:24
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! The crew Kate Preusser, Evan James and John Trupin are back to feast on mid-November hot stove cooking. Scott was shafted in the Manager of the Year voting in favor of Terry Francona, Julio Rodriguez was rightfully crowned Rookie of the Year and the Mariners have traded Erik Swanson and Adam Macko for Teoscar Hernández. It’s a whirlwind start to the stove season and I would ask you faithful listeners, how would you rate these moves? Teoscar adds a real bat in an otherwise sparse outfield group, even if the defense is somewhat suspect. New bullpen arms Luke Weaver, Gabe Speier and Easton McGee start filling out “the pile”, but let us know if you have a dark horse in that group. Are you excited to see Isaiah Campbell attempt to wrestle away the title of “best stache in the northwest” from Gardner Minshew? How do you see his infusion of dad energy meshing with the team’s existing vibe? Are you sad about Casey Sadler? Let us know in the comments. Lastly we look forward into the hot stove future and pick out some dates to mark on your calendars. The team has added a big piece, but the question of just how much better the squad is after the trade is an important one. How many wins would you say Teoscar adds? Was this the right move for this team to make instead of a free agent add? And do you think they have the resources to pull off another meaningful trade? Let the hot stove cook.   TWITTER LINKS: https://twitter.com/LookoutLanding https://twitter.com/JohnTrupin https://twitter.com/KatePreusser https://twitter.com/EvanJamesAudio Learn more about your ad choices. Hello Seattle Mariners fans! The crew Kate Preusser, Evan James and John Trupin are back in the habit of looking forward with the 2022 season firmly in the rear view mirror. John kicks off the chat with a deep dive on the Houston Astros roster and how they might be looking to patch a few leaky spots this offseason. Next Kate looks at Mitch Haniger and his continuing fit in Seattle versus what he might get on the free agent market. Then John looks at the newest Mariner, Luke Weaver, who just arrived from Kansas City and may have a future role in the Seattle bullpen. We collectively marvel at how healthy the Mariners have been while acknowledging a need to plan for worse faring in the future. Lastly the whole crew takes a wider glance at the 40 man roster and where some squeeze might come for the current players.   TWITTER LINKS: https://twitter.com/LookoutLanding https://twitter.com/JohnTrupin https://twitter.com/KatePreusser https://twitter.com/EvanJamesAudio Learn more about your ad choices. Lookout Landing Podcast 208: The 2022 Season Autopsy Edition19 Oct 202201:40:44
Hello Seattle Mariner fans. The crew Kate Preusser Evan James and John Trupin come together in the aftermath of a brilliant season to dig deep and provide the dissection it deserves. First and foremost, a reminder to check out Kate’s interview with C Trent Rosecrans from last week, which gives some wider context and detail to the Jesse Winker story and his current relationship with the Mariners. We dig a little deeper and reflect on that conversation in light of some of the new reporting from Divish and general twitter scuttlebutt. Next up Kate recounts her first-hand experience at the stadium during the playoffs and the roller coaster ride of accompanying emotions. John and Evan look at some of the holes on the roster and how those spots could be filled with external talent to build on the prospect foundation. In closing everyone steps back to appreciate just how special the season has been and how grateful we are as a site to have been a part of it. Lookout Landing Podcast 206: American League Division Series Preview11 Oct 202201:14:14
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! On this episode Kate Preusser, Zach Gottschalk and Jacob Parr are here to look forward to the American League Division Series against (who else but the Seattle Mariners most hated and dangerous rival) The Houston Astros. Yes indeed, if the Mariners intend to reach the mountain top they first have a dragon to slay. From a narrative perspective this feels like it was inevitable; You can’t be the best if you can’t beat the best and make no mistake, the Astros have (despite the cheating) been the best. Kate brings up a great point, that after the sour post season exit last season, it feels like the Astros are fighting for how legitimately their legacy will be remembered. The Mariners on the other hand find themselves in the comfortable role of underdog ready to take on the world. The crew breaks down the Houston lineup and rotation the Mariners are set to face and assesses our chances and advantages at each position. Lastly everyone picks series awards for the victorious Mariners, and predicts the series outcome.   TWITTER LINKS: https://twitter.com/LookoutLanding https://twitter.com/JohnTrupin https://twitter.com/KatePreusser https://twitter.com/EvanJamesAudio Learn more about your ad choices. Lookout Landing Podcast 205: An Infusion of Brotherhood with The Athletic's C. Trent Rosecrans10 Oct 202201:04:19
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! This episode Lookout Landing captain Kate Preusser is joined by special guest and Cincinnati Reds writer for the Athletic, C. Trent Rosecrans to talk all things baseball but specifically some Reds/Mariners imports making waves in the Pacific Northwest. Kate praises the Mariners for acquiring Suarez & Castillo while lamenting that such foundational, all start caliber players found themselves moved at all. Trent gives a brief history of Luis Castillo, newly minted Mariner ace. Trent praises the camaraderie between Winker, Suarez and Castillo and predicts it portends great things for the Mariners. Kate and Trent dive deep on Suarez’s good vibes only policy and how it has blossomed into the Mariners collective dance routine. Trent illuminates for Mariners fans just how hard the loss of (literally ALL of) the Red’s All Stars has been for the Cincinnati faithful and perhaps how hard it has been for those same players as well. The duo discusses Winker and tries to make sense of a perplexing season on all fronts, perhaps finding some optimism for his future in Seattle. Lastly they stand back and take a birds eye view of both organizations and the bright future of the prospects acquired by the Reds: Noelvi Marte & Edwin Arroyo.   TWITTER LINKS: https://twitter.com/LookoutLanding https://twitter.com/JohnTrupin https://twitter.com/KatePreusser https://twitter.com/EvanJamesAudio https://twitter.com/ctrent Learn more about your ad choices. Emergency Podcast: Sweet, Sweet Victory01 Oct 202201:16:39
Well Seattle Mariners fans, we did it. Kate Preusser, Evan James and John Trupin are here to celebrate the Mariners first playoff berth in more than 20 years. Dead tired and possibly hungover, we are here to revel in the glory that has eluded us for so long. Where to start? The 2022 Mariners are awash with young success stories who came through last night. Eight lockdown innings from a Logan Gilbert who was throwing harder than he has ever thrown in his life. An absolutely unhittable inning of relief from rookie Matt Brash. The best defensive play of Luis Torrens catching career to catch a steal immediately before the A’s would score their only run of the night. And of course, Cal Raleigh, he who was demoted merely months ago, puts a 4 in front of his WAR total with the 9th inning, 2 out home run that has already made him a Seattle legend. We break down our individual stories for the night from different perspectives and give out flowers for the biggest game in an era. For a team that was 10 games under .500 in May, this result feels earned yet miraculous al the same. What a ride it has been. What comes next? The Toronto Blue Jays, the Cleveland Guardians, the New York Yankees and the Houston Astros. We ain’t shook. Go Mariners. Emergency Podcast: 2022 MLB Trade Deadline Edition03 Aug 202201:08:14
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Trader Jerry has been working the hot stove to the bone, but now that the dust have settled, the 2022 Mariners team has come into stark focus. Out are prospects, most notably Noelvi marte and Edwin Arroyo, but also Andy Thomas, Michael Stryffeler, and the release of Jack Larsen; in are Luis Castillo, Matthew Boyd, Curt Casali and Jake Lamb. A frontline starting pitcher (an All Star no less), swingman insurance, a bench right handed bat and a proper backup catcher. Not bad. Not earth shattering after Castillo, but not bad. These are useful pieces for the team in 2022, on that there is no debate. After the wildest trade deadline in a while, it begs the question though, was it enough? Should the Mariners have traded from their outfield prospect "depth" instead? The legendary trio of John Trupin, Kate Preusser and Evan James are here to break down all the hot, spicy trade talk, and tell you if your Seattle Mariners are indeed primed and restocked for playoff glory. https://twitter.com/LookoutLanding https://twitter.com/JohnTrupin https://twitter.com/KatePreusser https://twitter.com/EvanJamesAudio Learn more about your ad choices. Emergency Podcast: Trader Jerry Strikes Again30 Jul 202200:53:36
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Urgent news is obviously that Jerry Dipoto has once again managed to strike an iron forged in the hot stove. The Mariners traded two of their top prospects in Noelvi Marte and Edwin Arroyo, another highly regarded starter in Levi Stoudt, as well as 2021 draft pick Andrew Moore for Cincinnati Red's starter Luis Castillo, who slides in as arguably the team’s best pitcher immediately. While Marte and Arroyo are an extremely high upside pair to trade for only 1.5 years of control, Castillo is undoubtedly an upgrade in the short term and the kind of impact at a position of weakness the team needed to break the playoff drought. The future is the future and therefore uncertain, so the playoffs in 2022, and the rest of the season ahead of the team, is what takes greatest priority. A bird in the hand is two in the bush, and the Mariners traded two in the bush today for one of five key fingers on the fist that will punch their ticket to a playoff spot and hopefully flip the Houston Astros the bird as well. Kate, Grant and Evan are here to break down the latest Mariners addition, look ahead to brighter days out of Texas and the coming series against the juggernaut New York Yankees in the bronx. https://twitter.com/LookoutLanding https://twitter.com/JohnTrupin https://twitter.com/KatePreusser https://twitter.com/EvanJamesAudio Learn more about your ad choices. John Trupin, Evan James and Isabelle Minasian convene to discuss Julio’s legendary performance at the 2022 home run derby. We collectively marvel at how the 2022 MLB All Star Game and home run derby have felt like both an American awakening to Julio, but also his birth as an international star. We hand out first half grades for the team across various topics like MVP (duh), most surprising vs disappointing, and flowers for the pitching staff. We collectively marvel at Ty France and JP, who have already assumed the roles of quietly excellent veterans amongst a very young squad. We look ahead at the future and make some bold predictions about where the Mariners might find themselves in October. Lastly there is much discussion of another young star, yet to take off and what his future might hold in Seattle, or elsewhere? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Lookout Landing Podcast 195: Flawless Execution, Total Domination18 Jul 202201:23:24
Hello Seattle Mariners fans. My how the mighty have fallen, and the chosen have risen. Yes indeed, the Seattle Mariners, after bottoming out at 10 games under .500 in May, have miraculously rattled off 14 wins in a row to ride off into the All Star break at a brisk 51-42, a game ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays for the second wild card spot. For this special episode (noted Abe Toro fan) Jacob Parr and Grant Bronsdon take over for John, joining Kate and Evan to celebrate the Mariners historic streak. The crew takes listener questions about key moments from the win streak and favorite games in particular. We highlight specific players who have turned it up in July and deserve some flowers, notably Cal, Sam Haggerty? And Carlos Santana. Lookout Landing Podcast 194: Farm To Table Setters11 Jul 202201:16:57
Hello Seattle Mariners faithful! What an absolute roller coaster ride of a week it has been. The Mariners have rocketed back into contention with an 8 game win streak and taking 16 of their last 19. After a May that was so dreary most of us had largely written the team off, they find themselves rolling into the All Star break with their lone representative, a rookie on a 6 win pace, and comfortably sitting in wild card position. Isabelle Minasian joins Evan, Kate and John to dig into the new, good Mariners. Collectively the crew stands in amazement of the turnaround the Mariners have conjured, while acknowledging works remains to be done. Isabelle assets that now is a key time to spend and invest in the team, especially since they have thrust themselves back into contention and she advocates for Toro to get the lions share of playing time at second base for the next few weeks to see if he can’t catch fire and ignite his way into a trade. Kate and Evan look at some potential replacements for Frazier in the infield and coverage for Kirby’s future innings in the rotation. Lastly, we collectively marvel at the good fortune that has rolled the Mariners way after a dreadful first quarter of the season. It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish, and the Mariners are looking to finish strong. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Lookout Landing Podcast 193: When You Wish Upon A Winker02 Jul 202201:15:51
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! This week John, Kate and I look at the surging Mariners, fresh off of beat down series against the hapless Baltimore Orioles and the sinful Los Angeles Angels. After a win last night against the w”A’s”hed Oakland Athletics, the Mariners find themselves a mere 4 games under .500, with winnable series ahead and some injured stars returning. We assess the Mariners spot in the second wildcard hunt and try to envision what the trade deadline might look like for a team in this position. We collectively emerge from the covid fugue state to answer twitter questions from our diehard fans. John digs into Jarred’s Tacoma Rainiers stat line and identifies improvements. We look at the Mariners pitching situation and who might cover Kirby’s rookie innings gap over the final quarter of the season. We barely even mention Julio because he’s so good that functionally he has become a separate entity entirely. Long live the J Rod Show. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Lookout Landing Podcast 192: We Come Back To You Now, At The Turn Of The Tide23 Jun 202200:59:19
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! We have been away, and ill, as two of our fearless podcast hosts have come down with the ‘Rona over the past week. We collectively remind everyone to get boosted if you can, mask up, stay healthy, because being sick is neither fun nor fiscally beneficial. In the interim, the Mariners finished off a good stretch of play by dropping a series to the Angels in pitiful fashion. There has been real anger and discontent amongst the fan base, and whispers for change (read: firings) have grown louder as the team has tumbled. Kate digs into her article about the Mariners leadership and the persistent faith we have in Scott Servais as a manager. We touch on Abe Toro, Jesse Winker and some of the other Mariners who have most underperformed so far, and perhaps what can be done about it. We try to understand just where we are, how we got here, and what a path forward looks like. Full disclosure, this is a deeply sober podcast, reflective of some tangible disappointment with the team. Yet even in the darkest hours, there remain reasons for true and honest optimism: Taylor Trammel’s hitting, Cal’s hitting, Julio’s everything, Logan’s command, George’s entourage. Baseball is a marathon, not a sprint and there are miles left to run. Are the Mariners still “in it”? Not reasonably, no, but they remain one of the youngest teams in the league with more baseball in front of them than behind. Last year Ryan Divish was on the podcast about this time and the parallels were made between the 1995 and 2021 Mariners squads. If that was the case, 2022 has some resemblance to the step back of 1996 before the team truly came into its own in 1997. Development is rarely linear, and in the midst of this current struggle, it is important to recognize how far we have come as a team, an organization and a fan base. If Cal Raleigh can hit anything is possible. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Lookout Landing Podcast 191: Perfectly Balanced, As All Things Should Be02 Jun 202201:22:00
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Fresh off an absolute shelling of the much maligned Baltimore Orioles, John, Kate and myself sit down to compare and contrast the Mariners rebuild to their modern contemporaries (Orioles and Kansas City Royals specifically). We break into listener question on pressing topics: Trammel’s hot start, Cal Raleigh 2.0, the continued development of George Kirby and just who is Zach DeLoach? We look at whether or not the Mariners are still in the hunt and need reinforcements at the trade deadline or if they can hold out till the winter. I take immense relief in knowing that Kyle Lewis is only injured in one way, instead of several. Kate reveals that despite all appearances, the Mariners playoff odds are not as dire as they may seem. With six weeks to go before the All Star break the team needs to turn it up against the A’s, Angels, Orioles and Rangers to stay afloat. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
