| Silver Screen Podcast - Bad Times at the El Royale Review | 08 Oct 2026 | 01:43:23 | |
Episode 165 - "We might need to work on your sales pitch, son. "The El Royale: no place for a priest"." Sometimes a film just deserves a little more attention. This week on the Silver Screen Podcast, we're checking into the mysterious El Royale for a review of Drew Goddard's stylish, sprawling and criminally underseen 2018 neo-noir thriller, Bad Times at the El Royale. Joining Michael Wilson are three fantastic guests: regular friend of the show Tobi, Will from Who Gameshows and his own YouTube channel, and first-time guest Carla. With a hotel sitting directly on the California–Nevada border, seven strangers with secrets of their own, and a story that constantly shifts perspective, Bad Times at the El Royale is a film packed with mysteries, moral ambiguity and hidden depths. We discuss its intricate plotting, themes of morality, faith, redemption and identity, and the question at the heart of the film: who actually gets to decide what is right and what is wrong? We also take a closer look at Drew Goddard's direction, the film's striking production design and cinematography, its use of colour and framing, the ingenious one-way mirror sequence, and the decision to shoot Cynthia Erivo's musical performances live on set. And speaking of Cynthia Erivo... there's plenty of love for Darlene Sweet and one of the film's most powerful performances. We discuss the brilliant ensemble cast, the 1960s setting, Michael Giacchino's score, the soundtrack, the film's shifting timelines and perspectives, its third-act problems, its box-office disappointment, and why a movie that came so close to greatness may nevertheless be worth revisiting. And, naturally, we reveal where Bad Times at the El Royale lands on the Silver Screen scoreboard. So check in, choose your side of the line, and whatever you do... Don't trust the mirrors. | HoM: Doctor Who Podcast - "Human Resources" Review & More | 27 Sep 2026 | 01:25:01
Series 2, Episode 10 - "Well I know Telford isn't the most desirable place to work but it seems a little extreme to brainwash your staff into accepting it." Hello TARDIS travellers and Cyber Fans, and welcome back to Hit or Miss: Doctor Who! After a little time spent exploring the final frontier, we're back in the TARDIS to continue our Cybermen season — and this time, we're stepping away from television altogether! For our first ever Big Finish review, Mike, D.K. and returning guest Stephen from Adventures in Space and Time take a trip into the world of Doctor Who audio to discuss Human Resources, the two-part finale to the first series of the Eighth Doctor Adventures. With Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor and Sheridan Smith's Lucie Miller at its heart, Human Resources takes us from the world of corporate recruitment to an altogether more terrifying job interview, as the Cybermen enter the picture and the Doctor finds himself facing one of his oldest and deadliest enemies. Before getting into the story itself, we take a look at Big Finish, the wider world of Doctor Who audio and some of our favourite Cybermen appearances outside television. We also discuss the uncertain future of Doctor Who on television and consider what we'd like to see when — and if — the TARDIS returns to our screens. Then it's time for Human Resources: its writing, humour and corporate satire, the performances, Nicholas Briggs' direction, the excellent sound design and production, and some genuinely fantastic twists and surprises along the way. Is Part One merely laying the groundwork for an explosive second half? How effectively are the Cybermen used? And can a story set around office life really make us fear the workplace more than we already do? | Silver Screen Podcast - Ladyhawke Review (80s Fantasy Season) | 24 Sep 2026 | 01:17:46
Episode 164 - "Do you know that hawks and wolves mate for life? The Bishop didn't even leave us that... not even that." The 80s Fantasy Season may have ridden off into the sunset some time ago, but apparently the quest wasn't quite over yet... We're finally bringing you our planned-but-delayed review of Richard Donner's medieval fantasy adventure Ladyhawke! Joining host Michael for this long-awaited return to the world of knights, curses and animal transformations are Sandy, stepping into the breach once again, and Adrienne, the very person responsible for putting Ladyhawke on our original 80s Fantasy Season list! Before we get into our verdict, we're taking a look behind the scenes at how Ladyhawke came together, Richard Donner's long struggle to get the film made, the inspirations behind the story, its unusual casting history, and the rather infamous decision to give a medieval fantasy film a synthesiser-heavy, progressive-rock-inspired soundtrack. We also look at the performances, direction, locations, production design and visual effects, and why Ladyhawke can sometimes look considerably more convincing than it feels narratively. Finally, we reveal our scores and ask the all-important question: does Ladyhawke deserve its cult reputation? Or is there more magic here to be found? | SSP Cinema Classics 31 - Metropolis Review | 19 Sep 2026 | 01:58:20
Cinema Classics Number 31 - "The mediator between the head and the hands must be the heart." Few films have shaped the history of cinema quite like Metropolis. Fritz Lang's groundbreaking 1927 masterpiece didn't just help define science fiction—it redefined what film itself could be. Nearly a century later, its towering cityscapes, astonishing visual effects and timeless questions about technology, class and humanity continue to inspire filmmakers and audiences alike. In this extended two-hour edition of Silver Screen: Cinema Classics, Michael Wilson is joined by co-host DK and returning guest Tobi to take a deep dive into one of the most influential films ever made. Together they explore the recently restored version of Metropolis, discussing its remarkable production history, revolutionary effects, unforgettable imagery, political and religious symbolism, themes of industrialisation, and what it truly means to be human. Along the way they also examine the film's enduring legacy, There's an extra twist this month too. Alongside the restored original, DK also reviews Giorgio Moroder's famous 1984 reconstruction, complete with its rock soundtrack and colour tinting. Throughout the episode the team compares both versions, debating whether Moroder's bold reinterpretation offers an accessible gateway into Lang's masterpiece or whether nothing can truly replace the original. As always, the discussion also ventures Behind the Scenes, From the Schüfftan Process and the iconic Maschinenmensch to the rediscovery of the long-lost footage that helped restore the film to something close to Lang's original vision, there's no shortage of cinematic history to uncover. Finally, the team reveal their favourite performances, moments and characters before awarding their scores and answering the biggest question of all... Is Metropolis simply one of the most important films ever made... or is it still one of the greatest? | Silver Screen Podcast - Batman Forever Review (Sequel Season) | 10 Sep 2026 | 01:51:16
Episode 162 - "I see without seeing. To me, darkness is as clear as daylight. What am I?" Riddle me this, podcast pals... Silver Screen Podcast is back for another deep dive into a cinematic sequel — or, in this case, threequel — as the Bat-Signal shines over Gotham and we revisit Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever. Michael is back in the host's chair, joined by regular co-host D.K., returning guest Lady Vean, and first-timer Sean Connell for a packed trip to Gotham City. Batman Forever represented a very different direction for the franchise. But beneath the neon, spectacle and increasingly colourful approach, is there a more thoughtful Batman story hiding? We delve into the film's exploration of Bruce Wayne's psychology, his connection with Dick Grayson, and Batman's relationship with fear. We also discuss the film's villains, its bizarre romance subplot, its often-questionable humour, and the tonal shifts that make Batman Forever such a fascinating — and divisive — chapter in the franchise. We'll also take a closer look at Joel Schumacher's direction as well as the performances, visual effects, action sequences and soundtrack. And then there's the Schumacher Cut. We discuss the legendary alternate version of Batman Forever, the additional footage that reportedly exists, what we know about the darker original cut, and whether we might ever actually get to see it. So dust off your Robin costume, grab a suspiciously large penny and prepare to take a trip back to 1995 as Silver Screen asks whether Batman Forever deserves the reputation it has acquired over the years — or whether nostalgia has painted our memories a little brighter. Even when it comes to Bat-nipples and wall-scaling cars. Episode 161 - "So I guess you have a choice. You want a war? Or do you wanna just give me a gun?" The Silver Screen Podcast’s sequel season continues as we return to the world of professional assassins, blood markers and very strict hotel rules for a look at 2017’s John Wick: Chapter 2! Mike is joined by Michael Whaley and Lynn as we discuss whether Chad Stahelski’s sequel improves upon its predecessor, expanding the mythology and introducing us to the mysterious High Table, the Continental’s wider world and the consequences of John Wick being dragged back into the life he left behind. We’ll be discussing Keanu Reeves’ continued evolution into the role, the film’s new characters, its spectacular action sequences and increasingly elaborate world-building, as well as the stunning visual style and that unforgettable hall-of-mirrors finale. But does John Wick: Chapter 2 successfully build upon the foundations of the original, or does the relentless violence and occasionally sluggish pacing hold it back? Join us as we check back into the Continental and discover whether this sequel has what it takes to stay on the right side of the High Table! | Silver Screen Podcast - Predator 2 Review (Sequel Season) | 27 Aug 2026 | 01:47:29
Episode 160 - "You can't see the eyes of the demon, until him come callin'." Welcome to Sequel Season on the Silver Screen Podcast! This week, we're kicking things off by heading into the crime-ridden, sweat-soaked streets of a futuristic L.A to revisit Predator 2, the ambitious follow-up to one of the greatest action films ever. With Arnold Schwarzenegger absent, Danny Glover steps into the lead role as Lieutenant Mike Harrigan, a detective investigating a string of brutal murders that gradually reveal something far more dangerous than rival gangs. But can this often-overlooked sequel escape the shadow of its legendary predecessor, or is it simply a case of bigger guns, more explosions and diminishing returns? Join DK, Michael, Sandy and Lynn as they discuss the film's surprisingly effective detective story, its expansion of Predator lore, the unforgettable introduction of the City Hunter, the controversial depiction of a "future" 1997 Los Angeles, and one of the franchise's most iconic final acts. They also explore Danny Glover's against-type casting, Bill Paxton's scene-stealing performance, Gary Busey's mysterious government operation, Stephen Hopkins' frenetic direction, groundbreaking visual effects, and the famous behind-the-scenes stories that shaped the production—including the battle to avoid an NC-17 rating and the sequel that almost reunited audiences with Arnie. Is Predator 2 an underrated cult classic that deserves far more respect than it receives? Or does it remain an overblown sequel that never quite escapes the jungle left behind by the original? Cinema Classics Number 30 - "You know I broke a promise. Never to fight again." Bruce Lee changed action cinema forever, but does his first starring role still pack the same punch over fifty years later? This month on The Silver Screen Podcast: Cinema Classics, Michael is joined by resident music supervisor and first-time Cinema Classics panellist Al Trotter to take a deep dive into the 1971 martial arts landmark The Big Boss. Together they discuss the film that launched Bruce Lee to international superstardom, exploring its fascinating production history, troubled shoot in Thailand, brutal fight choreography, lasting influence on action cinema, and the complicated censorship that has surrounded the film for decades. Along the way they ask whether the simple revenge story still holds up today, how Bruce's incredible screen presence elevates every scene, and whether this classic deserves its legendary reputation. Plus, behind-the-scenes trivia, favourite moments, memorable lines, and, of course, the all-important final scores. Join us as we revisit the film that started one of cinema's greatest legacies. | HoM: Star Trek Podcast - "Crisis Point" & "Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus" (LD) Reviews & More | 26 Jul 2026 | 01:51:15
Series 8, Episode 5 - "TNG is objectively the greatest TV show that has ever been created." Holodecks have always been one of Star Trek's greatest storytelling playgrounds, but what happens when Lower Decks decides to turn one into a full-blown movie franchise? This week on Hit or Miss Star Trek, Michael Wilson is joined once again by newly recurring First Officer Justin Avery Smith, alongside special first-time guest Jason Roy Gaston, to review both Crisis Point and Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus in one feature-length discussion. Together we explore two of the series' most ambitious episodes, packed with affectionate tributes to decades of Star Trek films, spectacular cinematic parody, surprisingly heartfelt character development, and enough meta humour to keep even the most eagle-eyed fans busy. Along the way we discuss Mariner and Boimler's emotional journeys, Lower Decks' unique approach to storytelling, George Takei's welcome return as Sulu, and whether these holodeck adventures succeed as both comedy and genuine Star Trek. As always, there's Behind the Scenes trivia, Poetry Corner, favourite moments and quotes, plenty of laughs, and our final Hit or Miss scores to determine whether these cinematic love letters truly deserve their place among the franchise's finest holodeck stories. All this plus a full interview with Jason about his Trek history and favourites. Naturally there is also a (slightly truncated) Hit or Miss section taking in two different instances of holographic relocation and two divisive starships. Series 8, Episode 4 - "For weeks afterwards we were going around shouting "invaders from the Fifth Dimension!" to each other." What happens when Star Trek pays tribute to the science fiction that inspired it? This week on Hit or Miss Star Trek, Captain Michael Wilson is joined by returning First Officer DK and returning guest Mary to revisit one of Star Trek: Voyager's most gloriously entertaining adventures: Bride of Chaotica! Together we celebrate an episode that transforms the holodeck into a black-and-white movie serial inspired by the likes of Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, complete with melodramatic villains, fearless heroes, crackling death rays and scenery-chewing performances. Along the way we discuss Kate Mulgrew's unforgettable turn as Queen Arachnia, Voyager's wonderfully theatrical embrace of classic sci-fi, the episode's remarkable production story, and why this affectionate parody has become one of the franchise's most beloved holodeck adventures. | SSP Cinema Classics 29 - The Haunting (1963) Review | 18 Jul 2026 | 01:27:45
Cinema Classics Number 29 - "Supposing it is in my imagination. The knocking, the voices. Everything! Every cursed bit of the haunting. Suppose the haunting is all in my mind." Welcome back to Silver Screen Cinema Classics, where we revisit the films that defined their genres, influenced generations of filmmakers, and continue to spark debate. This month, Michael is joined by Neil and Michelle from I Is For Investigate podcast to step through the doors of Hill House and explore Robert Wise's 1963 classic, The Haunting. Is Hill House genuinely haunted, or are we witnessing the slow collapse of a troubled mind? Together, we examine the film's unique approach to horror, its masterful atmosphere, and the filmmaking techniques that continue to unsettle audiences more than sixty years later. We discuss Nelson Gidding's screenplay and its ambiguous interpretation of Jackson's story, Julie Harris' extraordinary performance as Eleanor, and Robert Wise's remarkable direction, which relies on suggestion, sound design and psychological unease rather than overt shocks. Along the way we delve into the innovative camera work, distorted lenses, practical effects and groundbreaking sound design, as well as the film's fascinating production history and its lasting influence on everything from The Blair Witch Project to Paranormal Activity. We also consider the film's portrayal of Theodora, its themes of loneliness and belonging, and why audiences continue to disagree over whether The Haunting is one of the scariest films ever made or simply one of the most effective exercises in psychological suggestion. As always, we round things off by choosing our favourite characters, moments and lines before delivering our final verdicts on a film that remains a landmark of supernatural cinema. So lock the doors, keep the lights on, and join us as we investigate the mysteries of Hill House. After all, whatever walks there... walks alone. | HoM: Star Trek Podcast - "Our Man Bashir" (DS9) Review & More | 12 Jul 2026 | 01:56:14
Series 8, Episode 3 - "They have an episode where a Runabout shrinks to the size of a pin!" The holosuites are open once again as we continue our ongoing Hit or Miss Star Trek series exploring holodeck and holosuite adventures from across the franchise. Hosted by Captain Michael Wilson, the M of these proceedings, and joined by special guest and self-confessed SPY-fi queen Nita — our very own Miss Moneypenny — we're heading to the swinging sixties for one of Deep Space Nine's most beloved genre excursions: Our Man Bashir. Along the way we explore the episode's many connections to the James Bond franchise and the wider world of spy fiction, examining how Deep Space Nine lovingly recreates the look, sound and feel of classic espionage adventures while simultaneously poking fun at some of their more absurd conventions. From the lavish production design and stylish direction to the Bond-inspired score and larger-than-life villains, we discuss why this remains one of the series' most successful acts of genre homage. But beneath the tuxedos and one-liners lies far more than a simple parody. We take a deep dive into Bashir's fantasy life and what it reveals about the character, exploring the difference between being a competent professional and imagining oneself as an effortless hero. We examine the episode's role in reshaping audience perceptions of Bashir, its importance in his wider character journey, and the intriguing ways it foreshadows revelations still to come. Naturally, no discussion of Our Man Bashir would be complete without talking about Garak. We explore the endlessly entertaining chemistry between the station's doctor and its resident ex-spy, discussing the episode's use of their relationship, the recurring questions of queer subtext that continue to surround the pair, and why their scenes together remain some of the most memorable in all of Deep Space Nine. We also tackle some of the criticisms that have followed the episode over the years, including accusations of sexism and the portrayal of its female characters. Is the episode endorsing outdated spy movie attitudes, or is it presenting them through the lens of Bashir's fantasy and the genre conventions it is deliberately recreating? It's a conversation that sparks plenty of debate. Elsewhere, Hailing Frequencies Open sees us discussing some of our favourite and least favourite holodeck adventures from across Star Trek, the Hit or Miss section debates holo happenings and a rare ship that Mike doesn't like, and Poetry Corner returns with a licence to rhyme. So pour yourself a glass of Dom Pérignon, straighten your bow tie and prepare to enter a world where villains explain their plans in exhausting detail, every attractive stranger is suspicious, and reality has an unfortunate habit of interrupting the fantasy. | HoM: Star Trek Podcast - "Elementary, Dear Data" (TNG) Review & More | 05 Jul 2026 | 02:10:10
Series 8, Episode 2 - "She's such a bitch!" Hit or Miss: Star Trek continues its holodeck season with one of the most beloved adventures from Star Trek: The Next Generation: "Elementary, Dear Data". Joining Captain Wilson this week are returning guest Sandy and HoM Trek newcomer Lynn as the crew heads to Victorian London for a Sherlock Holmes mystery that ultimately becomes something far more ambitious. Before stepping onto the streets of Baker Street, hailing frequencies are opened once again for Lynn's first-timer interrogation of Trek history and favourites, plus further discussion of favourite and least favourite hologram content, while the Hit or Miss segment revisits a selection of simulations and an extremely recent hero ship. The main review focuses on "Elementary, Dear Data", the classic second-season episode that sees Data and Geordi's Holmes roleplay accidentally create one of Star Trek's most memorable adversaries: Professor James Moriarty. What begins as a simple holodeck mystery quickly evolves into a story about artificial intelligence, self-awareness, free will and the nature of existence itself. The discussion explores the episode's affection for Arthur Conan Doyle's work, the surprisingly modern questions it raises about computer-generated intelligence, the strengths and limitations of the holodeck as a storytelling device, and whether Moriarty should be considered a genuinely living being. Along the way the crew examines the episode's production history, its award-nominated recreation of Victorian London, the philosophical themes at the heart of the story, and the curious ways in which its ideas feel even more relevant in an age increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. There's also plenty of praise for Brent Spiner's performance as Sherlock Holmes and, in particular, Daniel Davis' unforgettable turn as Moriarty, a guest performance that remains one of the most celebrated in Star Trek history. Is "Elementary, Dear Data" simply a fun Sherlock Holmes pastiche, or one of The Next Generation's earliest and most thought-provoking examinations of artificial life? Join us as we investigate one of Star Trek's most enduring holodeck adventures and discover why some mysteries refuse to stay confined to the program. The game is afoot. | HoM: Star Trek Podcast - "A Space Adventure Hour" (SNW) Review & More | 28 Jun 2026 | 01:37:45
Series 8, Episode 1 - "It does sound a bit "soap opera" when you put it like that" The holodeck is officially open as Hit or Miss: Star Trek launches a brand-new season exploring one of the franchise's most beloved—and notoriously unreliable—pieces of technology. Joining the Captain Wilson Command Hologram as the show's newest recurring First Officer is actor, writer and performer Justin Avery Smith, fresh from his acclaimed one-man show Revenge of the Soy Boy, and switching focus back from Wars to Trek. Before stepping into this week's main review, the duo opens hailing frequencies to discuss some of their favourite holodeck stories from across the franchise, while the Hit or Miss segment tackles a selection of memorable holographic outings including a socially prophetic TNG episode, a Voyager holoprogram, a new and unique ship, a beloved main cast member of three Trek series, and a very emotional Star Trek: Voyager story. For the main review, attention turns to Strange New Worlds and the third-season episode A Space Adventure Hour, a loving homage to decades of Star Trek holodeck adventures. The discussion covers the episode's recreation of classic Original Series aesthetics, its surprisingly deep collection of references to Star Trek history and production lore, Jonathan Frakes' direction, the introduction of the holodeck years earlier than previously established canon, and Martin Quinn's continuing performance as Scotty. Along the way the crew examines the episode's central mystery, its use of familiar holodeck malfunction tropes, the effectiveness of its B-plot aboard the Enterprise, the various real-world Star Trek figures hidden within the holographic story, and whether the episode succeeds as a celebration of the franchise or simply recycles ideas Trek has explored before. The conversation also dives into the episode's strongest and most controversial moments, from its heartfelt defence of science fiction and Star Trek's cultural importance to its ongoing handling of Spock's romantic storylines, leading to one of the podcast's most passionate debates of the season so far. Was A Space Adventure Hour an affectionate love letter to Star Trek's past, or a hollow recreation of better stories? Join us as we fire up the recreation room and begin a brand-new season of holographic adventures. Computer, begin program. | SSP Cinema Classics 28 - King Kong vs Godzilla (1962/63) Review | 20 Jun 2026 | 01:27:32
Cinema Classics Number 28 — "King Kong could kill us all. You wouldn't care. Publicity's all you want. Publicity." Welcome back film fans and podcast pals. In this Cinema Classics episode we’re bringing the Simian Squad back together—our unintentionally assembled trio born from past reviews of Planet of the Apes and King Kong, where a shared love of great apes (and great films… mostly) turned into a recurring team-up. Host Michael is joined once again by co-host D.K and returning guest Nita as we head to Japan for the original 1962 clash of cinematic titans, King Kong vs. Godzilla—the battle of the century… but is it actually any good? We start with the unusual origins of the project and the fascinating behind-the-scenes details—from early script ideas and returning creative figures, to suitmation choices, practical effects, and some truly bizarre production decisions. There’s also plenty of talk about the tonal shift this represents for the Godzilla series, moving away from its more serious roots into something far more comedic, chaotic, and deliberately over-the-top... it is deliberate, right? As always, we break things down across the key areas, getting into the writing and what the film is really saying beneath the monster mayhem—touching on its satire of media, corporate greed, and the obsession with spectacle. The direction and performances are put under the microscope, along with the contrast between Kong and Godzilla as characters, the handling of the human cast, and the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of the visual effects and action. We also spend some time comparing the Japanese and U.S. versions, and whether those changes help or hinder the overall experience. So whether you’re here for the monster madness, the oddball humour, or just to see two icons collide, join us as we dig into the spectacle, the silliness, and everything in between—because sometimes, you just want to watch two people in monster suits throw rocks at each other. | Silver Screen Podcast - Legend Review (80s Fantasy Season) | 11 Jun 2026 | 01:38:11
Episode 156 - "Looking upon these creatures, one would not think that they could contain such power. One could rule the universe with it." As our journey through the fantasy films of the 1980s draws ever closer to its final destination, Silver Screen Podcast ventures deep into the enchanted forests, swirling mist and murky shadows of Ridley Scott’s cult fantasy oddity, Legend (1985). Joining Michael Wilson for this dreamlike adventure are regular co-host D.K., returning guest and filmmaker Michael Whaley, and fellow veteran guest Lady Vean as the panel tackles one of the most visually iconic — and divisive — fantasy films of the decade. Starring a young Tom Cruise, Mia Sara and an unforgettable Tim Curry beneath layers of demonic prosthetics as the Lord of Darkness, Legend remains a film that inspires fascination, nostalgia and confusion in almost equal measure. Across the episode the team explore the movie’s extraordinary production design, Rob Bottin’s remarkable creature effects, Ridley Scott’s obsession with atmosphere over narrative clarity, and the many different cuts and endings that have helped shape the film’s long cult afterlife. Is Legend a genuine fairy tale masterpiece powered by mood, myth and visual storytelling? Or is it a beautiful but underwritten fantasy sketch held together by pure aesthetic magic? The discussion also covers the contrasting Jerry Goldsmith and Tangerine Dream soundtracks, surreal dream logic, the film’s strange pacing and symbolism, memorable creature performances, and whether Scott’s commitment to atmosphere ultimately elevates or undermines the storytelling. Perhaps most importantly, Michael finds himself unexpectedly standing almost alone in defence of the film as the rest of the panel prove far less enchanted by this particular fantasy classic. So join us as winter falls, darkness rises, dresses dance of their own accord and Tim Curry attempts to seduce the entire production from atop an ornate throne. Just whatever you do… don’t touch the unicorn. Series 2, Episode 9 " Five million Cybermen, easy. One Doctor? NOW you're scared." This was an impromptu one, but sometimes those turn out to be the most fun. As our Cybermen season continues, Michael, DK and special guest/editor/story chooser Will Templar take a trip back to one of the biggest, loudest and most emotional finales of the Russell T Davies era as Hit or Miss: Doctor Who tackles the Series 2 crossover event: Army of Ghosts / Doomsday. The Cybermen have crossed over from a parallel world. Torchwood are playing with forces they absolutely should not be. The Daleks are waiting inside the Genesis Ark. And somewhere in the middle of all that chaos, Rose Tyler faces her final journey as the Doctor’s companion. Across the episode we discuss whether this ambitious two-parter actually manages to balance its enormous amount of moving pieces, the now legendary Dalek/Cybermen smack talk, Torchwood’s deeply uncomfortable politics, emotional manipulation versus earned tragedy, Graeme Harper’s direction, Murray Gold’s devastating score, and whether the farewell at Bad Wolf Bay still lands as powerfully twenty years later knowing the wider history of the show. Elsewhere there’s the usual trip Into The Vortex, quick-fire Hit or Miss reviews on stories and characters including Hide, Amy Pond and Lux, behind-the-scenes discussion, favourite moments and lines, production analysis, and a full scoring breakdown as we decide whether this blockbuster finale truly deserves its iconic reputation. So grab your 3D glasses, avoid touching anything brought to you by Daleks, and join us for a true Series 1 and 2 crossover event. Allons-y! | Silver Screen Podcast - Willow Review (80s Fantasy Season) | 28 May 2026 | 01:25:51
Episode 154 - "Unless she is stopped, Bavmorda will control the lives of your village, your children, everyone. All creatures of good heart need your help, Willow. The choice is yours." Welcome back, friends… Our journey through the strange and wonderful world of 1980s fantasy continues and this week we travel to the Nelwyn Valley and beyond as we revisit Willow — the ambitious fantasy adventure from Ron Howard and George Lucas. Host Michael Wilson is joined once again by returning guests Sandy and Michael Whaley for a lively, funny and occasionally divided discussion on one of the most beloved cult fantasy films of the decade — because while there was plenty of admiration around the table for Willow’s charm, imagination and spectacle, not everybody was entirely won over by its quest. From melting trolls and two-headed monsters to pig transformations, fairy dust, chaotic Brownies and groundbreaking morphing effects, we dive deep into the film’s unforgettable visuals, creature work and technical achievements. Along the way we discuss the film’s mythological influences, archetypes, the film’s occasionally uneven pacing, comedy choices, and whether Willow itself sometimes feels like a collection of familiar fantasy ingredients searching for a stronger identity of its own. There’s also plenty of appreciation for the cast — particularly Warwick Davis’ earnest central performance and Val Kilmer’s scene-stealing energy — alongside discussions about James Horner’s huge, bombastic score, the gloriously chaotic final battle, horrifying transformations, Harryhausen-inspired monsters and why Queen Bavmorda perhaps deserved a little more to do. But does Willow truly deserve its enduring cult status? Is it an overlooked fantasy classic elevated by heart, spectacle and imagination — or an uneven adventure that only fully comes alive in its spectacular final act? Well, there are babies, magic wands, trolls, pig monsters and Val Kilmer flirting with literally everyone. What more do you want? So grab your wand, avoid the fairy dust, and whatever you do… don’t volunteer to guard the baby. Silver Screen Rewind - "Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while." This week on Silver Screen Podcast, we return to one of the very first episodes we ever recorded as part of a special Silver Screen Rewind for our ongoing 80s Fantasy season — our review of the beloved fantasy classic, The Princess Bride. Before revisiting the original discussion featuring host Mike with Andy Kemp and Phil English (formerly of We Pay For Your Floor), we also take some time to pay tribute to director Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle following their recent passing. Joining Mike and DK for this newly recorded opening tribute are Nita, Jenny and Lynn, as we reflect on the impact of Rob’s work, the enduring magic of The Princess Bride, and the comfort and joy these films continue to bring so many people. Then it’s back to where it all began, as we revisit one of our earliest ever reviews — full of quotable dialogue, giant rodents, revenge, romance, sword fights and one of the most endlessly charming fantasy adventures ever put to film. | SSP Cinema Classics 27 - The Godfather Review | 16 May 2026 | 01:40:56
Cinema Classics Number 27 - "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse." Come in, come in… you come to us on the day of our podcast and ask us to talk about one of the most legendary films ever made? Well… we won’t refuse. This week on Cinema Classics, we’re making an offer you can’t refuse as we sit down with The Godfather—Francis Ford Coppola’s towering crime epic that redefined the gangster genre and cemented its place in cinematic history. Joining Podfather Don Michael Wilseone for this one is a trio of back up. We have trusted consigliere Sandy, frequent guest Tobi (who definitely wasn’t strong-armed into watching this… honest), and an unexpected return from underboss D.K.—because once you’re in, you’re in. Together, we dive into the rise of the Corleone family, exploring the transformation of Michael Corleone from reluctant outsider to ruthless leader, and asking the big question: is this really a story about crime… or is it something far more personal? We break down Michael’s chilling character arc and the slow loss of his soul, the film’s central tension between business and family—and how it blurs the line between the two. We also examine Coppola’s masterful direction, from shadowy interiors to operatic violence, and iconic performances from Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, and the rest of an all-time great ensemble. We also revisit the unforgettable moments that define the film—from brutal street hits to that haunting final door close Plus, we dig into behind-the-scenes drama, surprising production stories, and the cultural impact of a film that didn’t just depict organised crime—it reshaped how the world saw it. But it’s not all unquestioned praise. We also get into where the film doesn’t quite work for us, from its treatment of female characters to the sheer sprawl of its narrative—and whether it truly deserves its reputation as one of the greatest films ever made. With standout moments, favourite lines (yes, the cannoli makes an appearance), and our final scores on the table, this is a deep dive you won’t want to miss. So settle in, keep your friends close, and your enemies closer… And remember: you can do anything—but never go against the family. | Silver Screen Podcast - The Dark Crystal Review (80s Fantasy Season) | 07 May 2026 | 01:24:52
Episode 152 – "End, begin, all the same. Big change. Sometimes good. Sometimes bad." Greetings, travellers… Our journey through the strange and spellbinding world of 1980s fantasy continues, and this time we venture to the distant planet of Thra—where the suns burn bright, the creatures are unlike anything you’ve ever seen, and balance itself hangs by a thread—in The Dark Crystal. Host Michael Wilson is joined by returning guests—filmmaker and raconteur Michael Whaley, and Lynn (back after Fiddler on the Roof)—to explore Jim Henson’s bold and deeply unusual fantasy epic: a film with no humans, no easy answers, and a world that feels as ancient as it is alien. From the eerie decadence of the Skeksis to the slow, solemn pilgrimage of the Mystics, we dig into the film’s astonishing world-building, its groundbreaking puppetry, and the sheer ambition behind bringing Thra to life. Along the way, we explore its philosophical underpinnings—duality, balance, and what it truly means to be whole—and how influences like Seth Speaks helped shape its deeper ideas. But does The Dark Crystal fully come together? We discuss the tension between its childlike fairy-tale structure and its genuinely dark, often unsettling tone, the limits of its runtime, and whether the story itself lives up to the richness of the world surrounding it. There’s also plenty of love for Aughra (obviously) and Fizzgig (...okay), the unforgettable Skeksis, and the film’s emotional highs, strange quirks, and technical wizardry. Is this a flawed but fascinating experiment, or one of the most imaginative fantasy films ever put to screen? So shard the crystal, trust in the dreamfast, and whatever you do… don’t let the Skeksis catch you. | Silver Screen Podcast - The NeverEnding Story Review (80s Fantasy Season) | 30 Apr 2026 | 01:38:09
Episode 151 - "People who have no hopes are easy to control, and whoever has the control... has the power!" Greetings, travellers… The Silver Screen Podcast continues its journey through the magical realm of 1980s fantasy, and this time we’re heading to Fantasia—via Germany, childhood imagination, and one very suspicious-looking bookstore—to revisit The NeverEnding Story. Host Michael Wilson is joined by regular co-host D.K., along with returning guests Sandy and Lady Vean, as the team dives headfirst into Wolfgang Petersen’s beloved (and occasionally controversial) adaptation of Michael Ende’s novel. From the devastating Swamp of Sadness to the soaring joy of riding Falkor, we explore the film’s enduring emotional power, its fairy-tale quest structure, and its surprisingly early meta storytelling. Along the way, we discuss the film’s troubled relationship with its source material, its ambitious practical effects, and that unforgettable message about hope, imagination, and the dangers of “The Nothing.” Is this a timeless classic that speaks to the dreamer in all of us, or a flawed fantasy weighed down by Hollywood schmaltz? Plus we're bringing you behind-the-scenes stories from a notoriously demanding production, the truth about that traumatising horse scene and an awful lot of gushing about background details and practical effects. We also discuss the merits of the iconic Limahl theme song vs the original German score, and why people without hope are “easy to control…” So climb aboard your luckdragon, hold tight to your Auryn, and remember… Fantasia lives on—as long as we do. But that’s… another story. Cinema Classics Number 26 - "Say, for five hundred dollars I'd climb to Heaven, an' hang by my heels from the pearly gates." Welcome back film fans and podcast pals. In this Cinema Classics episode we're going back farther than we ever have before. 103 years back in fact, for a review and discussion about the 1923 silent-era comedy Safety Last! Host Michael is joined by co-host D.K, who selected this movie for review and begins by explaining his reasons, how this film came onto his radar, why he likes it and why he thinks it's a good fit for our analysis. He also shouts out a few more silent film favourites and laments the fading popularity of these seminal works. Then it's on to the main analysis. We get into a little about the Behind- the-Scenes making of the film, including that iconic clock-hanging stunt as well as the wall climbing techniques, tricks and skills used to bring it all to life. There's talk about the writing, dealing with relatable and effective comedy vs dated attitudes and some odd structural pacing. The direction and production design comes in for high praise, as does the majority of the acting. As ever the podcast wraps up with an overview of the critics' response to the film, personal favourite things, conclusions and scores. So make sure you catch the right trolley, check your back for "kick me" signs and maybe think twice before scaling any buildings. | Interview with podcast musician Al Trotter | 23 Apr 2026 | 01:29:01
AN INTERVIEW WITH MUSICIAN AL TROTTER In this special Meet the Creators episode, Mike Wilson sits down with an old friend and the podcast’s newest composer, musician Al Trotter. In this in-depth conversation, Al reflects on his early experiences with music—both listening and playing—including some (slightly embarrassing) first albums. He shares his journey through school, the influences and supporters who shaped him, and how he discovered his natural ability to learn and reproduce music by ear. Throughout the interview, Al explores each of his six released tracks, including collaborations, the real-life and fictional inspirations behind them, and his creative process—from initial ideas to published work. He also opens up about his online success and overcoming a brief crisis of creative confidence. Of course, no conversation would be complete without discussing the TV and film scores that resonate most with him, as we put him on the spot to name a few favourites. This is a fascinating and insightful listen for anyone interested in music, creative journeys, or simply a relatable—and perhaps motivational—story about following your geeky passion. | HoM: Doctor Who Podcast - "World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls" Review & More | 19 Apr 2026 | 01:58:22
Series 2, Episode 8 - "They always get started. They happen everywhere there's people. Mondas, Telos, Earth, Planet 14, Marinus. Like sewage and smartphones and Donald Trump, some things are just inevitable." Hello there, faithful friends… this is it (for now). We’re closing out this run of our Hit or Miss: Cybermen deep dives with a true epic—World Enough and Time / The Doctor Falls. A finale that somehow manages to feel like both an ending and a beginning, bringing us full circle from our very first Cyber review all the way back to the origins of the Mondasian Cybermen. Join Michael, D.K, and returning guest Tobi (plus a special guest appearance by returnee Lynn) as we head Into the Vortex one last time to tackle one of the most universally beloved stories in modern Doctor Who. Is this the definitive Cyberman story? Does Missy’s redemption arc truly stick the landing? And how does this finale balance so many moving parts without ever collapsing under its own weight? We dig into the genius (and science) behind the colony ship and time dilation, the long-awaited return of the Mondasian Cybermen, a masterclass in multi-Master storytelling, Bill’s devastating journey and unconventional resolution, Nardole’s quietly perfect send-off, Rachel Talalay’s cinematic direction, and that speech… you know the one. Plus all the usual features: Hit or Miss, behind-the-scenes insights, standout performances, favourite moments, and our final scores as we decide where this story truly lands. Is this a near-perfect send-off for the Twelfth Doctor? Or does anything hold it back? The Doctor falls… but does this story rise to a full Hit? | HoM: Doctor Who Podcast - "Earthshock" Review & More | 12 Apr 2026 | 01:54:08
Series 2, Episode 7 - “We Cybermen are superior in every way. Except when it comes to navigating stairs.” Welcome back, Doctor devotees and Cyber converts alike. This week our journey through all-time Cybermen stories takes us to the 26th Century, aboard a doomed freighter captained by an elderly British comedy legend, hurtling towards prehistoric Earth… and moments away from one of Doctor Who’s most shocking losses. Yes, it’s time for Earthshock. There’s a lot going on in this one, and our own ragtag crew are here to break it all down. Captain Michael is back in the host chair, with first officer D.K., returning guest Joshua (for the second week in a row), and HoM: DW first-timer Jenny rounding out the group with some impressive geek credentials — and maybe a surprising take on this particular adventure. We kick things off with the usual pre-amble, this time putting newbie Jenny through the Who initiation process: her introduction to the show, favourite stories so far, and her Cyber shout-outs. From there we briefly touch on the pleasantly surprising recent discovery of missing classic episodes and share our own excitement about what it could mean for fans. After that it’s a slightly shorter Hit or Miss section, where we debate a couple of big swings from the most recent series, a legendary antagonist, and a certain Sixth Doctor Cybermen encounter. As always, the final hour is devoted to the deep-dive review. D.K. talks through the behind-the-scenes decisions that shaped the story — including the secrecy around the return of the Cybermen and the devastating conclusion. We get into the Doctor and Adric’s surprisingly petulant behaviour in episode one, the effectiveness of the Cyber plan, some questionable stunt casting, issues with direction and effects, and the tension that still manages to land despite it all. There’s also a lively debate about pacing, nostalgia versus modern sensibilities, and whether the story still hits as hard today. As ever, we wrap up with audience opinions, our favourite moments, and final scores. So don’t just sit there watching old clips like the Cyber Leader — enjoy this podcast the way you’d enjoy a flower, a sunset, or a well-prepared meal. Hopefully it can be one of those small, beautiful things that life is all about. "Excellent!" | HoM: Doctor Who Podcast - "Revenge of the Cybermen" Review & More | 05 Apr 2026 | 02:00:12
Series 2, Episode 6 - “My Sky Striker! My glory!” Hold on to your time rings, faithful podcast fans, because this week we’re heading back into the Cyber-review fold on a course for Nerva Beacon and the fabled planet of gold, Voga, for a main-episode review of the… “divisive” Tom Baker serial Revenge of the Cybermen. Host Mike and co-host Companion D.K welcome back returning guests Cliff Chapman and Joshua Merkley to help untangle a messy web of intrigue, espionage, viruses, missile strikes, crash landings, and some rather uncharacteristic cyborgs. But first, we warm up with a chat about our favourite Tom Baker stories and the best seasons of classic Who. Then it’s the section as familiar as a reused set: Hit or Miss. This week we debate a somewhat maligned Matt Smith Cyber-encounter, Doctor Who’s own superhero, a classic Hartnell serial, and a very recent companion. Then things get intense as we confront mishandled viruses, civil war, fighting over gold, oddly behaved AI, and people with questionable loyalties. And no, that’s not just us reading the news from any random day over the last seven years. Camps begin to form between those who despise the story, those who passionately defend it, and those who let nostalgia triumph over logic. Along the way we explore how the script changed from genesis to final form, the spooky behind-the-scenes tales of the Wookey Hole curse, the location and studio filming, the electronic music, and how the story ultimately left each of us feeling. We round things off with critic and audience reactions, our favourite moments, and our final scores. So try not to cause any rock slides or detonate explosives, and definitely avoid any crash landings while you join us for another opinionated and entertaining episode. HARRY SULLIVAN IS AN IMBECILE — but you’re not. So press play now, and don’t disappoint the Doctor. Links: Cliff: • cliffchapman.bsky.social • https://ko-fi.com/clif... | HoM: Doctor Who Podcast - "Cyberwoman" (Torchwood) Review & More | 29 Mar 2026 | 02:05:53
Series 2, Episode 5 – “There was a dog pissing up against our tent, hold me Ianto.” We’re back for the next in our Hit or Miss: Doctor Who Cyber Season, and we're heading to 2000s Cardiff and into our first Whoniverse spin-off review. Yes, we're tackling the infamous “Cyberwoman” from Torchwood — the episode that asks, “What if body horror… but make it awkward?” Host Michael is joined by returning favourites: Pasty Sheep maestro and semi-pro Matt Berry impressionist George White, plus Who mega-fan, voice actor and self-declared No.1 fan (with heavy sarcasm) of Chris Chibnall, Cliff Chapman. We kick off with a big-picture Torchwood chat — the highs, the lows, the why did they think that was a good idea? — plus favourite Cybermen stories from across all Doctor Who media. Then it’s time for “Hit or Miss,” where quick critiques fly at another Who spin-off, a Cyber sidekick, a controversial modern Doctor and a Third Doctor romp. And then… the main event. If you’ve ever accused Mike of being too generous — or too quick to defend Chibnall — this may shock you. What starts as critique slides rapidly into venting, then mutates into something resembling group therapy. We break down the episode’s wasted potential, the rare moments that shine, and a genuinely strong performance from Gareth David-Lloyd… but there’s no escaping the frustrations. From infamous costuming choices to clunky “adult” dialogue, muddled character motivations, dated direction, sloppy scripting and an astonishingly misguided climax — nothing is spared. We round out with critic and audience reactions (apologies to the fans), pick out our favourite scraps of goodness (we try), and deliver final scores. Could this be the lowest rating we’ve ever given? Don’t slather yourself in barbecue sauce and fight a pterodactyl. Tune in and find out. If you dare. CONTENT WARNING: This episode's main review contains strong language, adult themes, and discussions of horror and sexuality. Like Torchwood, it is not intended for children. Listener discretion advised. | SSP Cinema Classics 25 - Forbidden Planet Review | 28 Mar 2026 | 01:27:40
Cinema Classics Number 25 - "The total potential here must be nothing less than astronomical!" Prepare yourself, listener, for a new scale of science-fiction cinematic value. Dare you come with us and visit the Forbidden Planet? Skipper Mike & First Lieutenant D.K are joined on this amazing voyage by returning interplanetary specialist Justin Avery Smith as we head to Altair IV and arguably the birth of the sci-fi genre as we know it. Celebrating 70 years since it's initial release our intrepid trio dive deep into the genesis of this cinematic landmark, explore the groundbreaking ideas, effects, and Shakespeare-inspired plot. There's a lot of praise for the visuals, the acting (mostly) and the sheer imagination and directorial vision. There's also fair critique of the elements that don't hold up so well, from dated sexism to creepy crewmen and a view of humanity’s guardrails that feels retroactively naive. But ultimately, perhaps unsurprisingly, things devolve into a Robby the Robot love-fest, as we attempt to explain just how this mechanical marvel has charmed audiences and captured imaginations for seven decades. We conclude with the usual critical response, along with an extended look at this film's unique and lasting legacy, finishing with our highlights, critical conclusions and scores out of five interstellar stars. So have your own Robby whip you up a drink (maybe not 60 gallons of bourbon), press play and enjoy this imaginative space odyssey. | HoM: Doctor Who Podcast - "The Haunting of Villa Diodati" Review & More | 15 Mar 2026 | 01:49:20
Series 2, Episode 4 - "My name was Ashad. I did spare your son...because he's a useless runt, sickly and weak. And I did have children. I slit their throats when they joined the resistance." Clouds are gathering, lightning strikes, and a familiar mechanical clank is moving in from Lake Geneva. Welcome to a spine-tingling episode of the Hit or Miss: Doctor Who Cyberman season, as this week we're investigating The Haunting of Villa Diodati. Host Michael is joined by a group of returning guests whose intellect and wit could rival any gathering of literary geniuses... or at least three Whovians and podcasters who turned up. It's regular contributor Tobi and newer recruits Stephen and Lynn. Our frightful foursome begin by discussing the highs (and lows) of the Whittaker era, then blast straight into the Hit or Miss section. This week the debates involve our famous time traveller's wife, a NuWho spaceship, a gender-swapped arch nemesis and a recent controversial cyber innovation. Then it’s off to Switzerland, 1816. Against the storm-lashed backdrop of Villa Diodati, our ghost hunters explore Frankenstein’s genesis, deliciously chilling atmosphere, and the seismic impact of Ashad — the Lone Cyberman. There’s praise (and some criticism) for the writing and performances, deep dives into the historical and thematic context, and an exploration of the Doctor’s seemingly unwinnable moral dilemma. So put the ghost story contest on the back burner, ignore the dreadful weather, grab a sandwich, and settle in for a mechanically macabre episode. | HoM: Doctor Who Podcast - "The Tomb of the Cybermen" Review & More | 08 Mar 2026 | 01:53:53
Series 2, Episode 3 – "Another artist replaced by A.I!" Hello again Whovians and Cyberfans, and welcome to another episode of Hit or Miss: Doctor Who. This week our Cyberman explorations take us back to classic black-and-white Who, as we try not to trip any traps or wake any frozen armies during our deep dive into Second Doctor classic The Tomb of the Cybermen. Host Mike and co-host D.K. are joined by two returning guests for this expedition to Telos: regular fixture Tobi, and Lynn, back again following our The Tenth Planet review. Proceedings begin with an analysis of Tobi and D.K.’s choices for favourite Cyberman storylines, before heading straight into our regular Hit or Miss segment. This week’s mini-debates take in a Key to Time adventure, the most recent Master, a particularly relevant classic companion, and the Seventh Doctor’s sole clash with our featured silver nemesis. Then it’s on to the main event. Our tomb-raiding crew dig deep into the story’s growing reputation as a once-missing adventure, the evolution of the Cybermen, Victoria’s first trip in the TARDIS, the contrast between human and Cyber villains, and the sheer brilliance of Patrick Troughton and Frazer Hines. It’s not all praise, though — we also confront the story’s unfortunate racist tropes, over-ambitious effects, studio limitations, and a slightly flimsy world-conquering plot. Audience thoughts, final conclusions, and scores close things out as ever. So don’t touch any suspicious doors, don’t stand between obvious weapons and training dummies, never make a deal with the Cybermen — and press play to navigate your way out of the catacombs with us. Series 2, Episode 2 – “Extreme Makeover: Human Edition” Welcome back, Cyber-converts, to the second episode of our new podcast series exploring Cybermen stories old & new. This week we shift focus to NuWho. So watch out for zeppelins, and hope your doppelgänger isn’t a dog as we step into a world that’s familiar… but just a little bit different. That’s right: we’re diving into the alternate-reality two-parter “Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel”. Host Mike is broadcasting this week alongside our very own makeshift Preachers; returning guests Michael Whaley and Stephen Rogerson, plus first-timer Joshua Merkley. We kick things off by grilling Josh on his Doctor Who origins and favourites, share our own standout Cyber stories, then head into the ever-reliable Hit or Miss segment. This week’s debates include a semi-lost Cyberman adventure, a bang-up-to-date design, a true Who icon, and a group of Dalek fighters. Our main review covers everything from emotional performances (and occasional scenery-chewing) to the effectiveness of the Cybermen’s reintroduction, the alternate-world concept, character arcs, and deeper thematic meanings. Along the way we explore early script ideas, BTS facts, audience reactions, and — as always — wrap up with individual scores & combined podcast rating. | SSP Cinema Classics 24 - Fiddler on the Roof Review | 28 Feb 2026 | 01:21:49
Cinema Classics Number 24 - "Dear God. Did you have to send me news like that - today of all days? I know, I know we are the chosen people. But once in a while, can't you choose someone else?" Hello again, movie fans and cultured classics aficionados! Welcome back to another episode of Cinema Classics on the Silver Screen Podcast feed. This month, host Michael has endured hardship, guest cancellations, and the challenge of keeping this episode balanced like a certain musician on a rooftop, as we turn our attention to the emotionally charged classic musical Fiddler on the Roof. Thankfully, first-time guest and devoted Fiddler fan Lynn McKinnon steps in to save the day — ensuring this is anything but a Tevye-worthy monologue. We begin by exploring Lynn’s favourite classic films and both reviewers’ history with this particular cinematic landmark, before diving into behind-the-scenes trivia, the deeper thematic currents, and our thoughts on its lasting effectiveness and impact. Along the way, we examine how the film tackles tradition, family, faith, politics, and its vital cultural and historical context. There’s plenty of well-earned praise for the performances — especially powerhouse lead Topol — and an attempt to answer how this story continues to resonate today, and what it might offer our own lives. As always, we close with contemporary critical reception, our final verdicts, and the all-important podcast score. So don’t spend your time wondering what you’d do if you were a rich man — grab a drink, raise a glass, and join us with a hearty “L’Chaim!” — To Life! Silver Screen Podcast (regular flavour) returns for 2026 and — well — do you like scary movies? I sure hope so. What’s your favourite scary movie? If you said Showgirls, then you’ll be right at home with this deep-dive review of slasher sequel Scream 2. We’re covering this film for two reasons: firstly, to tie in with the imminent release of Scream 7, and secondly to serve as a soft launch for our brand-new Silver Screen “Sequel Season.” This is essentially our pilot, but if all goes well we’ll be back later in the year to take a closer look at even more film follow-ups. Hopefully you’ll stick with us — but for now, it’s back to Windsor College… Regular host and podcast supremo Michael (or should that be Mickey?) is joined by two great guests to analyse the carnage candy. First up is returning guest — and first-time viewer — Tobi. We’re also joined by first-time guest Kevin, fellow Scream aficionado and horror podcaster. Together, our terrifying trio discuss their first impressions of the film, its personal and cultural legacy, what works (and what doesn’t) in the writing and post-modern commentary, Wes Craven’s masterful directing touch, and how this sequel stacks up against the iconic original. We also play detective along with the movie itself, diving into behind-the-scenes drama including spoiler leaks, script rewrites, and rushed schedules. Along the way we discuss the returning and new cast, our favourite characterisations, some iconic (and criminally underused) guest cameos, the gore factor, and much more. As always, we conclude with audience thoughts, a brief round-up of critical response, and our own conclusions and scores. So grab your popcorn, cover your ears if you go to the bathroom, pause your debates about James Cameron sequels, and strap in as we take another stab at analysing this killer franchise. | HoM: Doctor Who Podcast - "The Tenth Planet" Review & More | 22 Feb 2026 | 01:45:45
Series 2, Episode 1 - “We are equipped to survive. We are only interested in survival. Anything else is of no importance. Welcome back, faithful friends, to a brand new series of Hit or Miss: Doctor Who. Things are getting decidedly chilly as we head to Snowcap Base in the South Pole — and into our first examination of the cold, brutal logic of the chilling Cybermen. D.K. is your host, guiding our podcast party through the debut appearance of the menacing cyborgs in a hugely important story that also just happens to feature the first ever regeneration. Joining D.K is regular co-host Michael Wilson. We’re also delighted to welcome two first-time guests with plenty of experience of their own — Stephen and Lynn. Before the main review, D.K. lightly interrogates our guests on introductions to the Whoniverse, favourite stories and personal best Cyberman appearances. Then it’s the return of the Hit or Miss segment. Our intrepid crew then jumps into the main review, navigating those all-important firsts, examining the animated fourth episode, critiquing Hartnell’s final regular performance, and rating the companions and guest cast. They discuss whether the Cybermen make a strong first impression, the pacing and limitations of 60s television, Hartnell’s unfortunate absence from Episode Three, and a whole lot more than you can shake a Z-bomb at. As always, we wrap up with audience thoughts, our own conclusions, and final scores. So grab your radiation rods, keep your eyes on the skies as you hit play — and for goodness’ sake, keep warm. Yes… got to keep warm. | SSP Cinema Classics 23 - Sunset Boulevard Review | 24 Jan 2026 | 01:31:41
Cinema Classics Number 23 - "This is my life! It always will be! Nothing else! Just us, and the cameras, and those wonderful people out there in the dark!" Cinema Classics is back for 2026! In a very apt choice we're looking at classic cinema reflecting on classic cinema this month, as we head down to Sunset Boulevard — Billy Wilder’s venomous, melancholic love letter to Hollywood and one of the most iconic films of the Golden Age. Regular host Michael is joined by stalwart returning guest and fellow first-time viewer Tobi to discuss Wilder’s refusal of subtlety, the film’s ruthless focus and moral ambiguity, and how its heightened dialogue and stylised performances blur the line between tragedy, black comedy, and outright horror. From its famously fatalistic opening to an ending that fully commits to madness, we explore how Sunset Boulevard is a film about illusion, performance, and an industry that devours its own ghosts. We also dig into the film’s meta-casting, gothic production design, dive deep into the themes, and explore why Norma Desmond isn’t meant to feel like a real person — but a movie star who never stopped acting. Is the film slow, or simply uncompromising? Are its clichés dated — or foundational? And who, exactly, is it cruelest to? Fire up your old-school projector, get nostalgic for the past and join us for our thoughts on the ultimate Hollywood fable. What a wonderful next year it's going to be! What fun we'll have! | HoM: Doctor Who Podcast Festive Special - "Eve of the Daleks" Review & More | 28 Dec 2025 | 01:42:49
Series 1, Episode 10 - "Because something seems impossible. We try, it doesn't work, we try again. We learn, we improve, we fail again, but better, we make friends, we learn to trust, we help each other. We get it wrong again. We improve together, then ultimately succeed. Because this is what being alive is. And it's better than the alternative. So come on, you brilliant humans. We go again and we win. Deal?" It’s that wibbly-wobbly stretch of the year when time feels a bit out of sync, so what better moment to dive into some classic Doctor Who time-loop chaos? To close out our Dalek deep-dive series, we’re ringing in the New Year a little early with Jodie Whittaker’s festive special, “Eve of the Daleks.” Host Mike has swapped the turkey sandwiches and leftover chocolates for the microphone one final time this year, joined by two fantastic returning guests for a truly international episode. From Germany comes our good friend Tobi, and calling in from the USA is our favourite filmmaker and fellow geek Michael Whaley. Our globe-spanning panel kicks things off with a Hit or Miss look at four previous festive specials before debating the best of the rest. Then it’s straight into the main event: a deep dive into “Eve of the Daleks,” covering the angry tin despots themselves, Yaz’s big reveal, the Groundhog Day-style structure, the guest stars, the criminally underused Dan Lewis, and more. We also take a peek at the critics’ reactions before offering our own highlights and final scores. So settle in, unwrap another chocolate, maybe skip the “beef and beans,” and warm up your voice for the Auld Lang Syne singalong by shouting at some Daleks as we wrap up the year with a bang. It’s not quite fireworks… but it’s definitely a celebration. | SSP Cinema Classics Christmas Special - It's a Wonderful Life Review | 20 Dec 2025 | 01:53:46
Cinema Classics Number 22 - "Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?" “Merry Christmas, you beautiful old podcast!” It's here! Our Silver Screen Christmas Special this year lands with Cinema Classics as we dive into possibly the definitive holiday movie: Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life. Host Mike “Bailey” is joined by Guardian Angel-a, Sandy “Claus”, and Rob(in) Lunt for a bumper-length festive deep dive. We kick things off by chatting through our favourite Christmas films and regular seasonal viewing before exploring the origins of It’s a Wonderful Life—from its beginnings as a self-published booklet to its historical context, legacy, possible Muppet connections, and even why some at the FBI once frowned upon it. (Bah, humbug!) We unwrap the film’s themes, the messages that resonate today, and what makes it such an enduring seasonal favourite. There’s praise for Capra’s direction, the beautifully crafted sets, its emotional score, and the grounded performances—from James Stewart’s iconic turn, to Donna Reed’s underrated heart, to Lionel Barrymore’s despicably villainous Mr. Potter, and more. Finally, we close with critical context, our favourite elements, and our traditional ratings out of five heavenly stars. So grab a mince pie, put your feet up, ring a bell for Clarence, and enjoy this Christmas cracker of an episode. | Silver Screen Podcast - Batman Returns Review | 11 Dec 2025 | 01:38:27
Episode 137 - "As I was saying, I'm a woman and can't be taken for granted. Life's a bitch, now so am I." The Silver Screen Signal is lighting up the night sky, and that can only mean one thing: it’s time for another seasonally relevant episode of this here movie podcast. Host Mike has emerged from Wilson Manor for a December deep dive into Tim Burton’s festive, freaky, feisty superhero sequel, Batman Returns. We’ve assembled two outstanding ladies for their own returns to the podcast—and trust us, they have thoughts. First, racing in like Batwoman to rescue us once again from unreliable guests and co-hosts alike, it’s Sandy Eavenson. Joining her is a woman who has made Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman her personal life goals—Vean. Strap into your Batmobiles, folks… this one’s a doozy. Our intrepid trio digs into the troika of the Bat, the Cat, and the Penguin—what each brings to the film, who gets sidelined, who’s the most Burton-esque, and who ultimately steals the whole show. And that’s before we even touch on Max Shreck and his creepy dual relevance as both an expressionist boogeyman and the real-world villain who doesn’t need a costume. We dive deep into the film’s themes, its unforgettable visuals, Burton’s iconic direction, and the script’s evolution from early drafts to that final, unplanned proof-of-life shot of Catwoman. There’s also talk about our first encounters with the film, its cultural impact, the stellar performances, the instantly quotable dialogue, and so much more. So grab yourself a glass of milk, adjust a neon sign or two, watch out for any suspicious umbrellas, and join us—because, like Selina Kyle's answering machine, the party never stops on the Silver Screen Podcast. | Silver Screen Podcast - Planes, Trains and Automobiles Review | 27 Nov 2025 | 01:25:00
Episode 135 - "You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead if it makes you feel any better. I'm an easy target. Yeah, you're right, I talk too much. I also listen too much. I could be a cold-hearted cynic like you... but I don't like to hurt people's feelings. Well, you think what you want about me; I'm not changing. I like... I like me. My wife likes me. My customers like me. 'Cause I'm the real article. What you see is what you get." Happy Thanksgiving, or just Happy Holidays! This timely episode of Silver Screen Podcast is taking the ultimate nightmare road trip, joining Steve Martin and the late, great John Candy and breaking down John Hughes' rare adult comedy 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles'. Our "Hughes Crew" will be very familiar to anyone who caught last week's review of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, as host Mike is joined once again by Michael Whaley and Sandy Eavenson, much better companions than Del Griffith, and not a spilled beer in sight. Our Turkey Day Trio will give their favourite moments of comedy in this hilarious adventure, break down how this complements the all-important emotional heart, and discuss the importance of John Hughes' script and direction, as well as the incomparable performances of Martin and Candy. There's talk of our personal experiences and connections to the movie, how it's popularity has been a slow burn over the years and how it's increasingly become a holiday tradition, on both sides of the Atlantic. Host Mike even presents his bold thesis that it's more of a Christmas movie than a Thanksgiving one, though it's placed in the context of that holiday too. As always we wrap up with audience thoughts, conclusions and scoring. There's lots to enjoy so chuck on this episode with your turkey, or just your average Thursday dinner and don't think about the looming menace of Black Friday! Join us instead doing the Mess Around, swearing at rental agents and ultimately forming connections and getting home, one way or another. Links:

| HoM: Doctor Who Podcast - "Remembrance of the Daleks" Review & More | 23 Nov 2025 | 01:53:39 | |
Series 1, Episode 9 - "Crush the lesser races. Conquer the galaxy. Unimaginable power. Unlimited rice pudding, et cetera, et cetera." Welcome back friends of the Doctor. It's been an uncertain time for our favourite Time Lord but with matters settled (for now) we're back with more of our classic reviews to keep the TARDIS fires burning. This month and next we'll be concluding our 2025 series of Dalek-themed episode reviews, and boy do we have a big one (and a relevant one) here right now. Releasing on the very day of Doctor Who's 62nd anniversary we're following the Seventh Doctor and Ace back to the time and place it all began, for the legendary classic serial "Remembrance of the Daleks". Host Mike has fired up the transmat and beamed in a couple of great returning guests to join him and co-host/travelling companion D.K. Firstly it's actor, raconteur and Imperial Dalek lover Cliff Chapman. And last but certainly not least, she has more opinions on the Doctor than Davros, but she loves him really, it's Jillian Speed. Our fearless foursome begin with a brief discussion of favourite Seventh Doctor stories, before the return of the titular "Hit or Miss" section. This time around we're taking in a fitting Dalek ship, an equally relevant special model of the old pepperpots, the last big anniversary specials and a recently dearly departed Doctor. Then it's off to Shoreditch where we're diving very deep into this packed story, taking in themes of racism, the folly of nostalgia, the new master manipulator Doctor, the "surprise" reveals and just why this story ranks among the best to feature the dreaded Dalek menace. We'll cover the outstanding acting, the role of Counter-Measures, which Dalek faction we prefer and even in what way "Remembrance of the Daleks" is like the Barbie movie. We conclude by opening the Subwave Network to gather audience thoughts, sharing our personal highlights and then giving conclusions and scores. So don't go getting close to any suspicious soldiers, do not call Ace small, set down the baseball bat and get ready to enjoy this dense, geeky, informative and fun podcast episode with a nice cup of tea. Maybe some sugar? Would it make a difference?... oh, let's not start all that again.
