How To Deal With A Toxic Relationship23 Sep 202200:09:13

If you want to know what a toxic relationship is, or how to deal with it, we’re here to help. We want to give you some guidelines to think about and provide you with truth, hope, and plan going forward. To start, we’ll cover these two questions:
1. What do people say about toxic relationships?
2. What is a toxic relationship clinically?

“Toxic Relationships” are a difficult topic to approach because there are many varying opinions and experiences surrounding it. It seems like everyone has a different definition of what a toxic relationship is. For example, people will say a relationship is toxic when "you can't agree on things." Or, there’s “passive aggressive behavior." Maybe they "can't resolve conflict," or, "avoid conflict because they can't solve it." It could also be that "one person doesn't give any effort to the relationship." Now hear me out- these definitions are not healthy for a relationship, but they aren't toxic. They aren't great, but they can be fixed.

You see, toxic literally means poisonous. Eating or ingesting something that is toxic will kill you. It’s not just that you don’t like the taste. No. Toxic is poisonous. From a professional point of view, toxic relationships are abusive relationships physically, verbally or emotionally.

If you are in a situation where you’re experiencing abuse physically, verbally, or emotionally, feel unsafe/scared, or your rights/freedoms are taken away from you, please get help IMMEDIATELY. The Hotline: https://www.thehotline.org/ helps you understand what abuse is and how to get help and get safe.

I don't know your situation, but I'm giving you guidelines to think about. If you feel like your relationship is abusive or harmful to you, find someone to help you get safe.

After you get safe, only then can you start thinking about the relationship. After this, if there is any way we can help, we would be honored to.

Like we said before, there is a difference between how some people define toxic relationships. If you're in a relationship where you're fighting, can't compromise or you stopped putting effort in, while it's not a good situation, there is help for that! And we have worked with thousands of couples to grow, fix, and rebuild their marriage.

However, if you’re in a truly toxic and abusive relationship (physically, emotionally, or verbally) please get help. You can start here: https://www.thehotline.org/

We really do care about you.

Signs Of Insecurity In Men And How To Respond To It24 Jun 202200:09:27

Everyone has insecurities of some sort. Most of the time, they stem from something that happened in childhood or perhaps from a traumatic event that occurred later in life. These insecurities can present themselves in many ways, both emotionally and physically.

The American Psychological Association reports that insecurity is multifaceted. It pertains to an overall sense of uncertainty or anxiety about your worth, abilities, skills, and value as a person conveying the message that you're at risk or in danger of losing something or someone. It has a negative impact on your physical, mental, and emotional state. And without that security you're looking for, it makes you feel like you can't live up to your fullest potential.

Insecurity can present itself in behaviors that are either others-focused or others-avoidant. Read further to find out how you can deal with your husband’s insecurities and help him overcome them.

Infatuation Vs. Love17 Jun 202200:08:51

Have you ever felt the excitement of new love? When love begins, it’s exciting, and you think about the person often. But is this genuine love, or is it infatuation? Infatuation refers to the early stages of a relationship when the adrenaline is pumping and chemicals are produced in your brain that make it exciting and euphoric. But can infatuation truly be a form of love?

In the social sciences, we study love in different ways. Many models have been made of the various types of love, and infatuation is indeed part of love. The upside is that it feels fantastic. The downside is that it doesn’t last that long. Therefore, if you want a longer-lasting relationship, you can’t stop with the infatuation. You need to work on all three of Dr. Robert Sternberg’s essential components for a long-lasting relationship - intimacy, passion, and commitment.

Why Do You Love Someone? Falling In Love Explained10 Jun 202200:05:56

There's a process to falling in love. At Marriage Helper, we call it the love path. Whether you knew it or not, you followed a process that led you to fall in love with your spouse. There isn't a soulmate that you are waiting to connect with, and it has nothing to do with horoscopes or the alignment of the stars and moon. But why do you love someone?

There are four parts of attraction that we have labeled the PIES; physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual. The first step of falling in love is attraction. It draws you closer to the other person. If you continue to follow the process of the love path, you'll fall more in love. But if you stop, you can fall out of love, even if that isn't your intention.

Signs Your Wife Doesn't Love You Anymore03 Jun 202200:07:46

Something has changed in your marriage, but you can’t quite put your finger on it. You’re trying not to panic, but you can’t shake this feeling that your wife doesn’t love you anymore. This can be a terrible feeling, but there is hope. But first, we will share with you the three things to look for if you feel like your wife doesn’t love you anymore.

Distance doesn’t always make the heart grow fonder. Having physical or emotional distance in your marriage can be one of the signs that your wife doesn’t love you anymore. We see this happen in many ways, like when your wife walks into the restaurant without you or you start having less frequent meaningful and emotional conversations. While these signs might mean your wife isn’t in love with you anymore, they aren’t a complete diagnosis of your relationship. Our purpose at Marriage Helper is to help you find hope and give you the tools to further live into the hope of a better, stronger marriage.

How Ultimatums In Relationships Can Either Work For Or Against You27 May 202200:09:03

Has your spouse ever given you an ultimatum? Have you given your spouse one? Not all types of ultimatums can be bad. Your motive behind them is what’s important. Are you trying to control them, or are you trying to protect them or your loved ones from their destructive behavior?

An ultimatum says that a specific thing needs to stop or occur in a certain time frame; otherwise, a negative consequence will be the result. People react to demands such as this differently. There are psychological reasons behind this that start to develop when we are as small as two-years-old. The desire to follow your own free will is why ultimatums often get a negative response. However, that doesn’t mean that they don’t have their uses.

Married To A Controlling Wife19 May 202200:11:21

Being controlled by anyone is terrible, but it's especially painful when the person controlling you is your wife.

How can you break free of someone who controls your thoughts, decisions, passions, and hobbies?

At Marriage Helper, we have developed an acronym called PIES to determine your physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. Then, we can use that same principle to demonstrate how control manifests in a relationship.

Regardless of its form, no control is good for a marriage. While the steps might not be easy, refusing to be controlled is necessary for transforming from a controlling marriage to a healthy one.

Feeling Disrespected In My Relationship06 May 202200:09:33

Most people want out of a marriage, either because they don't feel loved, don't feel liked, or don't feel respected.

But what is respect? And how do you show it?

In marriage, we tend to feel respected if each of us feels heard, each of us feels lovely and lovable, and each one of us feels like we're part of a partnership. Problems usually arise when one spouse treats the other like a child or tries to control the other.

That's not a partnership. That's not a good marriage.

Find out how to add more respect to your marriage in this episode of Quick Tips.

The Difference Between An Emotional Affair And Friendship15 Apr 202200:09:16

When a married person looks to another most of the time, someone of the opposite sex, to fulfill an emotional need, that is emotional cheating. Going to someone else instead of their spouse and being unwilling to give up that relationship is emotional cheating. At the bottom of it, emotional cheating is when you look to someone other than your spouse to fulfill you in areas that only your spouse should fulfill you.

So, working with the definition that emotional affairs occur when a person NEEDS the other person in their life to provide them with something that their spouse SHOULD be giving them - how does this apply to opposite-sex friendship?

Interestingly, research indicates that men rely more on their wives for emotional support and well-being. Actually, according to research - WOMEN are more likely to have a support system outside of their marriage whereas men are most likely to only turn to their wives in times of hardship.

I think that begs a question for all of us to consider - am I a good friend to my spouse? Am I giving them or have I been giving them the physical and emotional support they need SO THAT they will not feel the need to look elsewhere?

This and more on this week's episode of Marriage Helper Quick Tips.

Positive Signs During Separation That Could Mean Reconciliation18 Mar 202200:07:51

So you're separated, but you don't want to be. What are some positive signs during separation to look for that may indicate you can put your marriage back together?

I was on a podcast recently where we talked about how difficult it can be to put a marriage back together when one spouse wants out. And that is likely where you are right now.

You have a spouse who wants out for whatever reason; you're separated, divorcing, whatever it might be. The podcast hosts asked how we at Marriage Helper can work with the situations we do and have such high success. Typically, counselors have a tough time working with separated couples or those getting divorced.

They asked me how to give hope to the hopeless. I responded by saying, "There are two things that need to happen. The first is teaching people what they did that led them here. And the second is teaching them what to do differently to bring their spouse back." That's the value of our free mini-course. If anything works, what we begin teaching you in the free mini-course will. It's less than 30 minutes long, but it can help you bring your spouse back.

My spouse is cheating. I'm hurting and emotionally exhausted. How can I stop hurting and become emotionally healthy again? In almost every conversation I have with a client, these are the statements I hear. I have so much compassion for these clients because I know all too well how that feels.

If this is where you are emotionally, then this is for you. Some researchers say that finding out your spouse is cheating is worse than experiencing the death of someone you love. The reason is that when someone dies, we must accept that they're gone. But the pain from an affair is resurrected every time you see or think of that person.

So the pain that you're experiencing is genuine and excruciating. So what can you do to make the pain more manageable and for you to get healthy?

Is Limerence Bad? How Marriage Can Often Start With Limerence25 Feb 202200:10:57

Often, clients will tell me that they are sure that they were in limerence with their spouse before they were married. But does that mean that the relationship with their spouse was bad from the beginning?

If you were in limerence with your spouse when you first entered a relationship together, it doesn't mean it's doomed. Your spouse being in limerence with you or with them is different from being in limerence with an affair partner or limerent object. But we'll talk more about that in a minute.

What Is Limerence?

Limerence is a type of love with identifiable characteristics. We can identify if it is limerence or not by those characteristics. It is important to note that limerence doesn't always occur in every relationship. But when it does, it is a powerful emotion.

Limerence is a deep longing for an emotional connection with a person that supersedes nearly anything. A person in limerence is willing to sacrifice almost anything to be with this person. Another characteristic that a person in limerence may have is thinking that this person is perfect. Even if the person has identifiable flaws, someone in limerence will explain those flaws away because of the "halo effect."

Reasons For Divorce21 Jan 202200:09:35

Why do people divorce? Quite a question, isn't it? So let us walk you through what the research says.

When we start talking about divorce, we can speculate all day long. If you ask people on the street, "What do you think is the biggest problem with marriage?" They will say something like communication. But when you start asking them, "What does that mean?" you begin to realize that they're talking about something other than communication.

If you look at the literature out there, you're going to find that typically, people want to divorce for one or more of these three reasons: I don't feel like you love me, I don't feel like you like me, I don't feel like you respect me.

Sometimes, no matter how much you think you're communicating like love, and respect, your spouse does not perceive it that way.

If you want to find out if your spouse wants to leave you, what it may be for, and start examining so that you can turn things around, watch this video.

You Want A Divorce? Listen To This First14 Jan 202200:16:05

Do this today before filing for a divorce. Has divorce ever crossed your mind or you’ve already broken the news to your spouse? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, watch this video first.

Research shows that couples wait an average of 6 years before seeking help for their marriage. Think of that timing in terms of your relationship. How many conversations did you avoid? How many times did you scream without hearing what the other was saying? Is there a time you could have sat down with your spouse to work through your issues calmly?

We often wait until it’s too late to start seeking help, but the truth is divorce hurts. It hurts you, your spouse, and your children, turning your world upside down. When we feel hurt or misunderstood, we take those emotions and run with them, never really breaking down the reasons or results of our actions. Today, we will help you think about your marriage issues from a different perspective. Do this today before filing for a divorce.

In this video, we discuss:

-The four questions to ask yourself before filing for divorce

-Common scenarios that lead to divorce

-Seeing yourself from your spouse’s viewpoint

-Processing your emotions

-Valuable tools to help save your marriage starting today

We all play a part in the success or downfalls of a marriage. Admitting your faults is hard, but self-reflection is powerful and the start of positive change. Remember, reconciliation is not a quick remedy to mend your marriage. It took a while to get here, and it will take time to get back to a better place. With our successful marriage-help programs, we believe if anything works, this will.
