| Markets Now Closing Markets -10-3-24 | 03 Oct 2024 | 00:10:42 | |
Grains close lower on Thursday, with livestock mixed to lower as well. Grains saw profit taking and farmer selling. DuWayne Bosse, Bolt Marketing, says grains ran up into some chart resistance and he thinks the fund short covering is starting to subside as well. Plus, harvest pressure may be picking up and overwhelming any technical buying. The markets are still watching global weather and rains forecasted for Brazil and Argentina next week had the market removing weather premium. However, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and caution ahead of the October WASDE are also market factors. Livestock were mixed to lower on profit taking and hedge pressure following new near term highs on Wednesday and even though cash cattle trade so far has been strong. | Markets Now Early Markets 10-3-24 | 03 Oct 2024 | 00:10:40
A mostly lower start in the ag markets Thursday. Scott Varilek, Kooima Kooima Varilek, says after new highs for the move in cattle futures yesterday there is some hedge pressure and profit taking, plus packers talking about kill cuts and weights in the South are still above last year. However, it looks like cash trade is going to be higher again this week with some $186 in the South already and $187-$188 in the North paid by a regional and producers asking $190. Hogs are fading strong exports and seeing some profit taking after near term highs were hit there as well. Grains are mostly lower with rain chances in the South American forecast and the funds nearly out of ammunition to cover shorts, plus prices have run into some chart resistance. Grains and livestock are mixed early. Vince Boddicker with Farmers Trading Company says after hedge pressure Thursday, soybeans see technical buying resume. However, Nov stopped just short of the 100 day moving average and will need more bullish news to get through that level. Corn is stuck between higher beans and lower wheat markets but he says is rangebound. Wheat is setting back on slower exports and some hedge selling. Cattle make near for the move highs with higher cash yesterday. Hogs see intitial pressure on the Hogs and Pigs Report marketings but are trying to recover. A lower day in ag markets except for cattle. Scott Varilek, Kooima Kooima Varilek, says cattle futures started lower with the drop in boxed beef values yesterday. However, the market made new highs for the move again into the close pushed by higher cash trade. Southern live trade is at $184 to $185.50, but mostly $185, which is $2 higher than last week. Northern trade has been lighter, but some $187 in western Nebraska developing right after the close. The negative talk of lower slaughter this week is actually a function of the numbers not being there. Hogs saw some profit taking ahead of the Hogs and Pigs Report. Grains ended lower as the end of quarter short covering and profit taking by the funds that produced this rally was overcome by an increase in farmer selling. Grains end higher in impressive fashion and after a mostly lower start. Matt Bennett, AgMarket.Net, says the market has been resilient as the funds are exiting shorts and taking profits end of quarter. How long will they continue to buy after that? China demand news and Brazil weather concerns have also contributed to the rally but he says it may be hard to sustain during harvest. If the market does stay strong there may be some other underlying bullish factor that hasn't played out yet. Cattle continue to look technically strong and have gotten a push from the stock market but Bennett says he is not sure if the funds will be willing to push the long side much farther. | Markets Now Early Markets 9-25-24 | 25 Sep 2024 | 00:10:19
Grains are mostly lower except a few wheat contract early Wednesday after hitting chart resistance and seeing a pick up in farmer selling trim gains. Darin Newsom, Senior Market Analyst for Barchart, says the grains continue to be resiliant as funds are exiting shorts and taking their profits to other markets including the stock market and the softs. There has been some buying as well tied to China's economic stimulus move. However, he doesn't think investment money has a reason to be long the grain markets yet. That may change as the futures add some weather premium tied to Brazil's drought and possible harvest delays and damage to U.S. crops from Hurricane Helene. Cattle and hogs are seeing two-sided trade but are well supported and moving with the stock market and possible meat demand. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Grains end mixed and give up most of Tuesday's early rally. What happened? Kevin Duling, KD Investors, says the market ran up into some chart resistance and is starting to look a little tired. However, he says there was likely some hedge pressure and farmer selling on the rally. He doesn't think the markets will set back much before resuming the strength due to strong demand, disappointing yields and U.S. and global weather concerns. Plus, he says the funds are looking for a home for their money and grains are undervalued. Cattle end mostly higher making more new highs for the move and while the market looks good technically and has been pushed by higher cash, Duling is a bit cautious due to the seasonal increase in supplies. | Markets Now Early Markets 9-24-24 | 24 Sep 2024 | 00:08:33
Grains continue to rally Tuesday on fund and technical buying and Randy Martinson, Martinson Ag, says the markets have cleared some key chart resistance also triggering short covering. He thinks China's economic stimulus, South America weather concerns and disappointing yields are supporting the buying as well. Cattle futures trade two-sided and are due for a correction but have been resiliant with better cash. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
| Markets Now Closing Markets - 9-23-24 Audio | 23 Sep 2024 | 00:08:23 | |
Grains were higher on Monday with fund and technical buying but led by the soaring soybean market. Allison Thompson with The Money Farm, says the combination of China lowering interest rates, dry South American weather and an additional 6.1 million bushels of soybean export business supported soybeans. However, November beans could not take out the August high, which the market needs to close above to keep the rally going. Corn and wheat followed soybeans but were also putting in some weather premium and reacted to strong export inspections. Cattle futures made new highs for the move with cash up $2-$3 last week and a neutral Cattle on Feed Report. However, she says the market is running into the next area of chart resistance. Cattle futures make new highs for the move early, pushed by higher cash trade says Brad Kooima of Kooima Kooima Varilek. The Cattle of Feed report was largely neutral and so the key will be if the funds want to keep buying on the strong technical signals. Hog futures are also making near term highs with fund buying and China economic news. Grains are seeing strong gains led by soybeans as China lowers interest rates, exporters report a 6 million bushel sale of soybeans and weather concerns in Brazil. Soybeans are seeing a chart breakout but can they keep going as harvest pressure picks up? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Corn and soybeans end lower Friday seeing harvest and hedge pressure due to option expiration. Jim McCormick with AgMarket.Net, says the row crops are also watching Brazil weather forecasts which have turned a little wetter to start October. Wheat ended mixed but was lower for the week removing war and weather premium. Cattle futures rallied back to close mostly higher making new highs for the move on the heels of some higher cash. The stock market saw some consolidation but McCormick explains where it goes from here could impact ag markets. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
| Markets Now Early Markets 9-20-24 | 20 Sep 2024 | 00:09:11 | |
Cattle futures start lower Friday morning after new highs for the move Thursday. Scott Varilek, Kooima Kooima Varilek, says that market is overbought and into chart resistance and so traders are taking some profits ahead of the Cattle on Feed Report. Cash cattle trade has been quiet but the signal of a bottom has brought buyers into the futures as well as lower interest rates and the strong stock market. Hog futures also making new highs for the move Friday morning pushed by speculative or technical buying but it may also be better than expected demand. Corn and soybeans are setting back on harvest pressure and some forecasted rains for Brazil, despite higher wheat and 4.4 million bushels of soybean export business to China. | Markets Now Closing Markets -10-2-24 | 02 Oct 2024 | 00:09:18
A mostly higher day except soybeans. Ted Seifried, Zaner Ag Hedge, says wheat and corn make new highs for the move. Both markets saw additional fund short covering and support from geopolitical and weather concerns. Soybeans ended slightly lower but are in a holding pattern awaiting Brazil rain confirmation. He thinks funds have covered a large percentage of their record short in the grains and so he doesn't see a lot more upside in the market. Cattle and hog futures also soared into new near term highs pushed by fund buying and ideas the port strike is going to invoke supply chain disruptions that will cause stockpiling similar to COVID. Grains end lower Thursday with livestock to the plus side. Mike Minor, Professional Ag Marketing, says corn and soybean markets saw some early harvest pressure plus some rain chances in Brazil in early October also played a role. Wheat fell with better rain chances in the Central and Southern Plains. However, all the grain markets have technically run into chart resistance. Cattle and hogs and the stock market all rallied together in a delayed reaction to the Fed cutting interest rates for the first time in four years. Minor says that is positive for demand for meat and all commodities. He says the change in monetary policy may also bring some managed money back into the grains. | Markets Now Early Markets 9-19-24 | 19 Sep 2024 | 00:09:19
Grains are mixed early with livestock mostly higher. Soybeans are holding slight gains on strong weekly exports but DuWayne Bosse, Bolt Marketing, says they may struggle to stay above the 50 day moving average with harvest progressing. Corn is being pulled down by wheat and looking for more yield data, while wheat is seeing continued profit taking with a higher dollar, slower exports and rains in the SW Plains. Cattle futures are strong with the rally in the stock market, lower interest rates and a bottom in the cash market, with December live cattle getting above $180. Hogs see continued technical buying. | Markets Now Closing Markets - 9-18-24 Audio | 18 Sep 2024 | 00:09:16
Grain and livestock futures end mixed on Wednesday as markets were awaiting the FOMC decision. Darren Frye, Water Street Advisory, says the 50 basis point interest rate cut by the Fed was largely anticipated but the market is expecting additional easing by year end and this will be friendly for the ag sector especially as it weakens the dollar. Soybeans rallied on both supply and demand factors but could not close above key resistance but Frye thinks the market will continue to move higher. Corn was flat caught between higher soybeans and lower wheat. Wheat continues to see profit taking with better rain chances in the Southern Plains. Cattle were choppy and two-sided awaiting the Fed announcement but also looking for cash direction after a low was forged last week. Hogs saw additional chart based buying. | Markets Now Early Markets 9-18-24 | 18 Sep 2024 | 00:11:21
Grains higher led by soybeans. Kent Beadle, Paradigm Futures, says China soybean prices spiked higher with rumors of them buying U.S. beans. Plus, early yield reports on soybeans have been disappointing. However, November finally got above the 50 day moving average. Corn and wheat are extending slight gains from Tuesday with soybeans and stronger demand. Live cattle had a strong technical close yesterday but are in a holding pattern awaiting the FOMC decision and hogs are chopping as well. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Grains ended lower on Monday with livestock mixed. Mark Schultz, Northstar Commodity, says wheat led the losses taking out weather premium and that weighed on corn. Soybeans tried to rally on export business but ran into chart resistance and early harvest pressure. Live cattle set back despite higher cash last week and higher boxed beef values at noon again seeing a technical setback in the December. Hogs managed to bounce with cutouts and despite lower cash. | Markets Now Early Markets - 9-16-24 Audio | 16 Sep 2024 | 00:11:55
Cattle futures opened higher and feeders are holding gains with lower but live cattle see some profit taking despite better cash news. Brad Kooima, KKV, says the cash market has bottomed and he expects higher trade this week and he thinks cattle futures can technically build on last week's higher weekly closes. He is watching $179.50 resistance in December live cattle for confirmation. Hogs started mixed with the front months gaining on the deferreds with some forward spreading but Kooima says the market may continue to struggle to hold gains with rising seasonal numbers. Soybeans open higher with more export business but continue to fight to get above the 50 day moving average, while corn is down with wheat Kooima thinks the lows are in. He cautions though that both corn and soybeans may struggle to rally further with harvest pressure and farmer selling picking up. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
| Markets Now Closing Markets - 9-13-24 Audio | 13 Sep 2024 | 00:12:18 | |
Grains end mixed Friday with livestock lower. Alan Brugler, A & N Economics, says wheat led gains with a lower dollar as that market is seasonally trying to bottom. Wheat pulled up corn but the market was still working in the lower ending stocks numbers from the Thursday WASDE. Soybeans failed to extend Thursday's gains running into chart resistance again. However, all the grains ended with higher weekly closes, so are the lows in? Cattle set back Friday despite steady cash but put for the week were up sharply. Brugler discusses if the market can build on that. And what's going on with the volatility in the stock market and what happens with the dollar and the Fed meeting next week? | Markets Now Early Markets 9-13-24 | 13 Sep 2024 | 00:10:23
Cattle continue higher pushed by better cash news. Scott Varilek with Kooima Kooima Varilek says early cash has been steady in the South at $181 which would at least stop the bottoming process. The turn back higher in the stock market has helped ease the nervous selling by fund traders as well. Hogs seem to be following but he doesn't think the recent highs will be retested due to rising numbers and tightening shackle space. Grains are all higher with corn and soybeans extended Thursday's rally with the market breathing a sigh of relief soybean yield wasn't raised and even though corn was the ending stocks number was still lower. Varilek says a lower dollar and higher wheat is also helping the row crops with that market putting in some weather premium. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Grain and livestock end mixed Tuesday. Soybeans saw double digit losses and November fell below $10 on profit taking and better than expected crop ratings driving yield ideas headed into the WASDE. Dave Chatterton, Strategic Farm Marketing, says the lack of China export business was also negative. Corn was caught between the lower soybeans and higher wheat market which saw short covering. Crude oil collapsed again and that macro market also cast demand fears on the ag futures. Live cattle saw a lack of follow through buying, with hogs mixed. Tomm Pfitzenmaier, Summit Commodity Brokerage, says wheat starts strong on fund shortcovering triggered by war and weather concerns, which pulls up corn. Soybeans struggle to follow. Fund short covering produced this uncommon harvest rally but how long does a rally like this historically last and are the funds just about done buying? Cattle and hogs also see fund buying and push to new highs for the move. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Soybeans and corn set back early on profit taking and report positioning. Shawn Hackett, Hackett Financial Advisors discusses what yield and ending stocks numbers are already dialed into prices and what the market will trade after the report. Wheat consolidates has been seeing better demand and dry weather in the U.S. and Black Sea is being watched. Cotton is up Tuesday but has been disappointing as its been more tied to economic concerns than lower production. Grain and livestock futures all end in the red on Friday with risk off selling. Garrett Toay, AgTraderTalk, says it was tied to bearish outside markets and a selloff in the stock market and crude oil. Grains also saw profit taking after a decent rally off the lows and after hitting chart resistance. He thinks grains may trade sideways now until the USDA Report provides direction on yield and with harvest about to ramp up. Cattle futures had a tough day and a down week following lower cash and cutouts and he thinks a bigger correction is in store. Hog futures saw risk off technical selling as well and a push from lower cutouts, but he doesn't think that market is done going up yet. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Grains see early strength with strong new crop corn and soybean exports but then turn mixed. Darin Newsom, with Barchart says, the markets have run into chart resistance and may be getting tired. Plus, there may be some harvest pressure heading into the weekend. He says the recent rally in the grains follows the seasonal patterns and while demand news and weather have been helpful, most of the push has been fund short covering. Crude oil tries to recover after one of the worst week's in a year, but what does that mean for the ag sector? And payroll data was lower than expected and Newsom says he expects a rate cut in the September meeting, the question will be how much. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mike Zuzulo, Global Commodity Analytics, says corn and wheat set back on profit taking. Soybeans start lower but rebound with export business to China and unknown destinations and some concerns about dryness in Brazil impacting planting. Cattle futures have a tough technical day taking out key support but lower cash at $181 in the South also hit futures. Scott Varilek, Kooima Kooima Varilek, says cattle see more pressure with some early cash trade at lower money after hopes for steady, plus higher weights. October live cattle need to hold the uptrend line technically as he says that contract is setting right on that critical point. Hog futures are down for a second day seeing profit taking and lower cutouts weigh on futures, so he thinks the rally is over. Grains are taking a breather Thursday after a nice rally but he doesn't think its over as demand and soybean export business to China is coming to the market and there are growing concerns about the dryness in Brazil. | Markets Now Closing Markets - 9-4-24 Audio | 04 Sep 2024 | 00:09:19
Rich Nelson with Allendale, Inc. says grains continued to rally on Wednesday with livestock leaning lower. Funds continue to cover short positions in the grain markets but there is also a fundamental push coming from moderating yield expectations in South America and in the U.S. The U.S. sentiment was reflected in their national annual yield survey. That combined with a pick up in demand could keep the rally going for awhile. Cattle futures consolidate with some early lower cash at $180 in Kansas and despite strong beef values post-Labor Day. Hog futures also set back after a strong chart breakout and push from stronger demand. So is the rally over? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Grains try to build on yesterday's higher closes, while livestock are mixed. Dave Chatterton, Strategic Farm Marketing, says the funds have been covering their short position with strong technical signals, talk of lower yield and better demand. However, he's not sure how much farther grains can rally ahead of the WASDE and with a pick up in farmer selling. Cattle are consolidating after a higher day yesterday and despite strong boxed beef values. Lean hog futures continue to see managed money buying with some help from stronger cash and cutouts but he thinks the rally may be about to run out. Grain and livestock futures all close higher on Tuesday. Randy Martinson, Martinson Ag, says grains were able to technically build on higher weekly closes and with the outside market bearishness it looked like some money flowed into the ag sector or funds took some profits on their short positions. However, yield and crop conditions may be declining with the hot dry weather and the dryness persists in the extended forecast. Demand has also been picking up with 4.85 million bushels of flash soybean sales to China and strong export inspections for all of the grains. Cattle extended gains after a higher week last week and strong midday boxed beef prices. Hogs continued to see fund buying with higher cutouts. Grain and livestock futures are mostly higher early Friday. Scott Varilek, Kooima Kooima Varilek, says the cattle charts still look good if August live cattle can expire above $178 that will be very positive for the long term continuation charts. Cash trade this week has been steady in the South at mostly $183 with some steady live sales in the North, but dressed business at $292 is $2 lower. He is also concerned about weights running 24 pounds over a year ago with high priced feeders and four year lows in corn. Lean hogs have had a chart breakout but can the market keep going? Soybeans have broke above the downtrend line and corn is above its 20 day moving average. Is this just fund short covering end of month or a real trend change? Jeff Hoogendoorn with Professional Ag Marketing says grains end to the plus side with corn and soybeans adding some weather premium on hot dry forecasts and ideas of declining yield. However, new crop exports for corn and beans were also supportive. Wheat followed the row crops but also saw some fund short covering and he says this may be evidence the managed money want to buy in the ag sector. Corn and soybeans push higher on hot dry extended weather forecasts and strong new crop exports says Kent Beadle, Paradigm Futures. Wheat is mixed on spread trade and trying to short out quality issues with the Hard Red Spring wheat crop. Cattle set back with lower cutouts and lower cash trade, even though it is light in nature. Grain and livestock futures end mixed Wednesday. Tommy Grisafi, Advance Trading, says soybeans give back some gains after three higher days on rains that fell in the Corn Belt adding to the record yield and with First Notice Day coming up. Corn could not build on Tuesday's key reversal and was drug down by beans. While wheat extended gains on short covering and Grisafi says U.S. wheat has gotten too cheap, plus there are quality issues in the Hard Red Spring wheat in North Dakota that may make high protein wheat supplies tight. Live cattle consolidated as well after a couple of days with strong chart action. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Grains are mixed early Wednesday and so are livestock. Craig Turner with StoneX says soybeans are setting back on First Notice Day selling and rains in the Corn Belt overnight, despite export biz. Corn is seeing some support from higher wheat and export sales. Wheat extends gains after key reversals yesterday and end of quarter short covering in what could also be bottoming action. Turner thinks corn, soybeans and wheat are at value levels and below the cost of production, so they may be forging low term lows. That may also mean livestock producers should line up feed needs. Grain and livestock futures end mostly higher on Tuesday. Don Roose, U.S. Commodities, says corn and wheat scored key reversals as the market may have dialed in the most bearish news but its also end of month and quarter which prompted some short covering by the funds. But is it possible corn and wheat are trying to bottom? Soybeans were higher for a third day adding weather premium so how high can prices go? Cattle extended gains after the outside day higher Monday on technical buying but tight supplies and the futures discount are also fundamentally supportive, but Roose says demand and boxed beef prices have also been strong. Lean hogs made 2 1/2 month highs on continued fund buying on seasonals, the futures discount to cash and following global pork prices, including China. Mostly higher grain and livestock futures on Tuesday. DuWayne Bosse, Bolt Marketing, says soybeans have been up for three days putting in weather premium but are running into chart resistance. Corn made new contract lows overnight but is slightly higher following wheat, which is seeing some short covering on lower crop ratings and Mexico buying 5 mb of corn. Soybeans ended higher putting weather premium, but John Payne, Advance Trading, says corn and wheat futures saw liquidation ahead of first notice day on Friday both complexes scoring new contract lows in the process. Live and feeder cattle futures had a higher day which was a surprise with the bearish placements in the Cattle on Feed Report. So, is that market starting to bottom.
