Talking points: mindset, purpose, military, masculinity

A sincere honor to chat with J.R., and I’m blown away by his perspective and honesty on the hardship he’s faced—and overcome. We cover a lot of ground: the importance of male friendship, the struggles veterans can go through, the importance of vulnerability AND accountability. Throughout it all, J.R.’s outlook shines through. Listen in, team.

(00:00:00) - JR’s defining moment

(00:11:45) - What happened to JR during his deployment

(00:23:58) - How men and veterans get stripped of purpose and identity, what contributes to that, and how we can do better

(00:38:04) - What JR would say to men who see the state of things and retreat into isolation, and the importance of building emotional for yourself

(00:55:50) - What JR would teach the next generation of men

J.R. Martinez’s life story is one of resilience and transformation. A Louisiana-born Army veteran and Iraq War survivor, Martinez faced tragedy early in his military service when a roadside bomb explosion left him with severe burns covering over a third of his body. His recovery included 34 months of treatment and 33 surgeries, a challenging journey that revealed his strength and inspired a new purpose.

Martinez began sharing his story, quickly becoming a sought-after speaker, captivating audiences at military bases and for major organizations like Delta and Wells Fargo. His personal mantra, “Adapt & Overcome,” resonated deeply, embodying his commitment to resilience and gratitude. He’s also become an advocate for organizations like the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors and Glasswing International, earning awards like the Ivy Award and the National Red Cross Spirit Award.

In 2008, Martinez ventured into acting with a role on All My Children, which opened doors in entertainment. He won the 2011 season of Dancing with the Stars, capturing audiences nationwide. His memoir, Full of Heart, became a New York Times bestseller, and he later pursued higher education, a milestone for his family. Today, Martinez continues to inspire through speaking engagements, acting, and advocacy, sharing his journey of strength and hope with audiences worldwide while balancing family life with his wife, Diana, and their children.

(00:34:36) - How might the work of grieving a mother’s passing and relating to your son be connected?

(00:06:02) - Why do you think psychedelics were so villainized back in the day?
(00:11:29) - Would you say that part of the psychedelic experience is interaction with the unconscious?
(00:15:16) - Did psychedelics influence Jung’s “Red Book”, and how can psychedelic use actually improve mental health?
(00:24:11) - Psychedelic use should also assist collective mental health, not just individualistic goals

A pioneer at the intersection of microdosing, personal transformation, and professional success, he has been featured in Forbes, Rolling Stone, and the BBC's Worklife. Paul helps others use microdosing as a tool for professional development and increased self-awareness by treating the use of psychedelics as a skill refined through mentorship and courageous exploration.

Talking points: couples therapy, emotions, modern culture, empathy

Delighted to have the wit and wisdom of Figs O'Sullivan to content with once again. It's been too long! We cover a lot of ground, specifically around couples therapy, so I encourage you to check the timestamps and listen in.

(00:00:00) - As people learn more “therapy-speak” and watch more TikTok “experts”, how is that filtering down into relationships?

(00:06:50) - Why do some people default to blaming their partner when things don’t go well?

(00:12:57) - Why talk about diagnosing partners yourself is so difficult, and how competency can actually, sometimes, make you IN-competent

(00:18:24) - What’s your opinion on modern therapy infiltrating culture the way it has?

(00:22:49) - Is modern therapy set up well enough to truly help men?

(00:30:25) - Why do couples fight over and over—and what do they fight about?

(00:30:25) - The emotional pursuer and emotional withdrawer dynamic

(00:41:25) - What are some ways out of that dynamic?

(00:46:17) - What gets in the way of empathy, and how can that be overcome?

(00:50:37) - What does good couples therapy entail, and how do you know it’s working?

(00:55:25) - It’s important to pay attention to the ease of things as well as hard stuff

Tom Nash - Redefining Problems, Post-Traumatic Growth, And Exploiting Adversity16 Oct 202300:59:54

Talking points: adversity, disability, resiliency vs anti-fragility, growth, mindset

Everything about this convo was enjoyable, but I think what I appreciate most is how pragmatic and straight-up grounded Tom's insights are. It makes for highly effective advice you can work on right away. Bonus: he's a great storyteller.

This is a great episode to dig into if you're looking for inspiration towards a different approach to things, especially hardship.

(00:00:00) - Intro, and the importance of living in a place you don’t always like
(00:07:00) - Tom’s defining moment
(00:09:43) - What Tom gained from intense physical hardship
(00:15:52) - Reorienting yourself instead of the problem, and post-traumatic growth
(00:20:05) - Is resiliency born or revealed by hardship, and have people treated you differently?
(00:23:25) - How do you approach problem-solving itself, and how Tom became a DJ
(00:34:10) - Tom’s definition of anti-fragile and resiliency
(00:50:06) - Did therapy help?

Quadruple amputee and DJ, Tom Nash exercises his unique knack for storytelling alongside his often dark and dry sense of humour, to lead audiences down a path of self-discovery, encouraging them to inspect their lives from a different angle. Tom’s grounded approach to working out what’s important and setting aside the noise of life, resonates with listeners.

Tom explains how harnessing the power of adversity helped him to build a more pragmatic, productive and self-reflective mindset. Applying the lateral thinking methods imbued upon him to circumnavigate physical issues into his vocational endeavours carved out a new line of thinking.

Just before (like, literally just before) six days of solitude in Scotland, I had the immense privilege of chatting with Sara Kuburic, the brilliant existential therapist and new author of It’s On Me: Accept Hard Truths, Discover Yourself, And Change Your Life, coming out tomorrow.

Not sure what existential therapy is? Well we get into here, plus a multitude of other things, like facing what YOU are responsible for, losing the sene of self, and how some of this plays out in modern culture. Do not miss this one, team.

(00:06:52) - What Sara was in denial of
(00:10:57) - Why we fall apart when things are going well
(00:18:58) - The importance of looking at the darker stuff
(00:21:11) - Pillars of existential psychology
(00:29:19) - Have we, as a collective, lost our sense of self?

(00:44:17) - Defining “self-loss” and the role grief plays
(00:54:52) - Can responsibility-free time help define the self?
(01:01:05) - How does one develop a relationship with the body that helps orient the self?

Sara Kuburic is an existential psychotherapist, consultant, writer, and columnist for USA Today. She was born in Yugoslavia and raised in Canada. She is passionate about helping people seek change and live authentic, free, and meaningful lives. Her interest in psychology stems from her personal experience living through wars, navigating complex relationships, and continually learning what it means to be human.

Six Days In Solitude (And Why You Might Need The Same)14 Sep 202300:15:58

Talking points: solitude, contemplation, mindset

By the time you hear this, I’ll be way out on the Isle of Skye, the home of my ancestors, for some intentional solitude. This kind of deliberate aloneness is something I think every man needs, but doesn’t really attempt.

Listen in for a reflection on what and why I’m doing this, and why it might help you too.

(00:00:00) - Intro
(00:01:35) - For years, I didn’t like being alone
(00:03:35) - I believe every man needs SOME responsibility and distraction-free time
(00:05:30) - Why I chose Scotland

Talking points: workouts, form, nutrition, fitness

The last time Ron was on the show, he shared an incredible story of overcoming adversity, and crafting a life of resiliency. I wanted him back on the show to discuss some foundational aspects of getting fit and eating right, something Ron has spent most of his life working on. Bear with us; we had some audio troubles but you should hear everything loud and clear.

This is a great episode to listen to if you're starting out on your fitness journey or are looking for refreshingly simple advice on proper form, proper nutrition, and other tips. Lots of info here.

(00:00:00) - Intro
(00:05:19) - When you want to be more serious about exercise, where should you actually start?
(00:09:34) - Are deadlifts worth it, and are they something the average person needs?
(00:11:07) - What some the foundational pieces of squat form?
(00:20:34) - What are some other core workouts and foundation pieces for chest, biceps, etc.?
(00:31:08) - What can do you (if anything!) for small calves?
(00:41:29) - What are some of the other key pieces people should incorporate    into their fitness life?
(00:47:36) - On HGH and sprinting, and Ron’s final thoughts on pairing the right energy system with right kind of work

Ron Williams is one of the most decorated natural bodybuilders in the world, having achieved the highest honor ever awarded in Natural Bodybuilding by becoming the sole recipient of the “Natural Bodybuilder of the Decade” award. As a 21-time world champion, he’s leveraged 40 years of experience to develop transformational processes of winning that help to build Champion Men.

Ron has devoted his life to educating, inspiring, coaching, and encouraging people. He’s a nationally recognized motivational and inspirational speaker, with a unique connection to his audience stemming from his own personal journey of physical and spiritual transformation.

The principles Ron teaches and uses in his own life are easy to embrace, simple to understand, and effective. Ron’s desire is to equip men with the necessary tools to live, as he calls it, a Champion Life.

Talking points: addiction, masculinity

This mini-episode is a bit of a departure in style, but the topic is deeply important to me. Most men have an uncanny ability to push forward despite intense pain and suffering. That can be a blessing in times of hardship, but it can also turn on you.

Men's Work Session - Recovering And Healing Old Grief, Part One28 Aug 202300:48:22

Talking points: grief, loss, anxiety, helplessness

Every so often, I'll have an anonymous guest on the show to give listeners a glimpse into what men's work at ManTalks is really like. This is going to be a three-parter, so stay tuned for more.

This man is someone I've known for a while through his participation in ManTalks, and he's come to me looking wanting to feel more in charge of his life, and more able to handle when life, business, or relationships take a hit. Behind much of it is ungrieved childhood loss.

This is a great episode to dig into if you feel like you manage fine when life is good, but fall apart when it doesn't. There's insight on some of the consequences of not having the chance to properly grieve.

(00:00:00) - Intro and what our guest would like to work on
(00:10:07) - A pervasive feeling of inadequacy, and how it relates to making money
(00:14:02) - How the loss of a mother led to feeling helpless and inattentive
(00:21:40) - Feeling sorry for dad, and feeling like it’s “too late”
(00:31:00) - Connecting with the loss of a mother on a deeper level
(00:40:37) - Next steps

Does Modern Therapy Understand Men And Their Suffering?24 Aug 202300:15:54

Fair warning, a focal point of this episode is suicide.

Talking points: therapy, self-help, masculinity

More men than ever are actively seeking help. They're going to therapy, they're working on themselves, they're doing "the work". I know because they come to me and people I know—either in the coaching or the therapeutic industry—by the thousands.

And yet a significant percentage of them don't come out it "helped". Many don't come out at all. To be clear, I am NOT saying therapy as an industry is totally broken or something to ignore. But there ARE some things I think it could do better.

(00:00:00) - Intro and some statistics
(00:04:47) - What I’ve seen and heard from men who come to ManTalks live events
(00:05:40) - I’m not saying the therapeutic industry is broken
(00:07:06) - We have to acknowledge that there are differences in men’s and women’s experiences
(00:09:25) - The three things the industry underestimates or misses with men
(00:11:43) - I’ve known a lot of men who looked great on the surface
(00:13:27) - Many of us don’t know how to help men get their direction back

Kevin Miller - Are You Pursuing Excellence—Or Just Addicted?21 Aug 202301:09:44

Talking points: success, achievement, addiction, cycling, athleticism, personal development

Kevin Miller is a powerhouse. More than that, he's deeply humble and intentional in what he does after a lifetime of hard work and the pursuit of excellence. I sat down with him last week to dig deeper: what makes drive "drive"? What's the meaning of really going beyond your limits? What really, truly drives you, and where are you going with that?

You know, just light conversation.

(00:00:00) - Intro and Kevin’s defining moment
(00:06:04) - What it takes to be a professional cyclist, and what drove Kevin to pursue it
(00:11:10) - What might be underneath a valiant can’t-quit-won’t-quit attitude, and what’s the difference between pursuit of excellence and addiction?
(00:19:11) - When it comes to the pursuit of excellence, what’s actually rewarding about it?
(00:26:26) - How did the pursuit of excellence filter its way into your parenting?
(00:31:49) - Intentionality versus pursuit, and where the addiction to pursuit might come from
(00:47:35) - Do you think it’s healthy and meaningful for men to pursue some kind of physical excellence?
(00:51:39) - How the self-help industrial complex has shifted over the last few decades
(01:04:45) - Is AI going to help or harm people and the self-help industry?

Kevin is a former pro athlete, respected personal development guide, top-ranking podcast host, published author, and father of nine who has devoted himself to helping people elevate their personal experience and improve the way they show up for others.

Kevin hosts the Self-Helpful podcast, which has over 60 million downloads and is routinely visited by today’s most influential changemakers. His book, What Drives You challenges today’s myths on “driven people” and serves as a guide to clarity and conviction in what you authentically value and what truly motivates you.

Talking points: addiction, culture, history, enlightenment, Zen, purpose, non-duality

The ManTalks Podcast has grown exponentially over the last couple years, so for all you newcomers, I like to release a sort of cross-section or "best of" episode to showcase what the podcast is all about—after all, I have talked to some brilliant and varied experts over the years!

This time, the themes are the widest ever: addiction and enlightenment. I chose this to demonstrate my love of the scientific and the spiritual—and my constant goal to balance the two. As Albert Einstein said, science without religion is lame, and religion without science is blind. I hope you enjoy.

(00:17:19) - Dr. Carl Erik Fisher on addiction through history and across cultures, and how society divides addicted people

Get Used To Her Being Disappointed10 Aug 202300:09:27

Talking points: boundaries, independence, relationships, nice guys

Yeah, it's a somewhat controversial title. It's also a challenge. Many, many men bend over backwards to prevent a partner from ever feeling disappointed, and when they inevitably do feel disappointed (because that's life sometimes), they spiral. Listen in.

(01:15) - Intro and why I'm talking about this
(03:05) - Caveats
(04:42) - Why this is important

Talking points: isolation, culture, relationships, friendship, anger, connection

Every now and I then, my team and I like to compile some of the greatest insights from our guests and center them around a theme. This week, we’re going hard on connection. The importance and nuance of it, the consequences of being without it, and the ways connection manifests.

These days, connection isn't easy, but it's more important than ever. Listen in some highly distilled wisdom.

(00:00:00) - Doug McKinley on isolation, passing down wisdom, self-leadership, working weaknesses, and adding value to you and your world

(00:21:51) - Nedra Tawwab on developing satisfying friendships and how to navigate tough conversations

(00:35:26) - Marisa Franco on how men and women build friendship differently, “friendship minus mission”, how camaraderie has changed over the years, and the impacts of NOT having friends

(00:50:56) - Angus Fletcher on changing your internal story and your relationship to yourself, cultivating inner antifragility, and relating differently to your own anger

Dr. Russell Kennedy - The True Origins Of Anxiety07 Aug 202301:15:10

Talking points: anxiety, suicide, mental illness, neurology, culture, psychology

This was SUCH a thorough and enjoyable interview. Always a pleasure to get the practical yet caring advice from Dr. Kennedy, someone I’ve known for a long time.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed or deals with anxiety, this is THE episode for you. We cover all the ways anxiety, the body, and the mind are connected, where to begin helping yourself (or others) with those anxious feelings, what the therapy and personal development industries often miss out, and way way more.

(00:00:00) - Intro and Russell’s defining moment
(00:04:03) - How Russell dealt with the complexities of a schizophrenic father
(00:11:33) - How anxiety is a manifestation of something much deeper
(00:15:38) - What are some of the most common anxiety myths?
(00:18:35) - What is the actual purpose of anxiety?
(00:21:54) - How do you talk to people who dismiss anxiety and trauma?
(00:33:37) - Do you think kids are more anxious than ever before?
(00:40:10) - What do we do for kids knowing that distraction culture will likely worsen?
(00:47:30) - What do you mean by “anxiety isn’t a feeling”?
(00:51:11)  - Anxiety vs Alarm
(00:58:26) - Where do you begin helping someone with anxiety?
(01:08:17) - Is there a difference between anxiety and stress within the brain?
(01:12:36) - Russell’s final thoughts on anxiety

Dr. Russell Kennedy, aka “The Anxiety MD” specializes in the art and neuroscience of helping people recover from anxiety disorders. He knows anxiety from the inside out, as he developed his own anxiety disorder as a result of growing up with a dad with severe schizophrenia.  Dr. Kennedy has degrees and advanced training in medicine, neuroscience, and developmental psychology—but it’s not all science, as he is also a certified yoga and meditation teacher and was a professional stand-up comedian for over a decade (no joke!)

In his award-winning book and audiobook, ANXIETY RX, he shows a practical, actionable program for anxiety relief that incorporates a combination of the latest in neuroscience with the grounding wisdom of the body with the ultimate goal of relieving the anxious thoughts of the mind. Using neuroscience (think "The Body Keeps the Score") and blending that science with a more artistic approach he learned through living at a temple in India, taking psychedelics, and being a natural and gifted intuitive, Dr. Kennedy gives a unique and never before seen understanding of what anxiety truly is,  and further, exactly how it can be successfully treated. Dr Russ wants to make sure that nobody has to suffer with anxiety as he did.

Bonner Rinn - Living With Cerebral Palsy, And Leaving Dark Motivation Behind17 Jul 202301:15:24

Talking points: motivation, resiliency, transformation, Mt Kilimanjaro, Kona marathon, family secrets, doubt, shame

I'm proud to have known Bonner for some time now, thanks to him being a member of the Alliance, my private men's group. But the reason I wanted him on the show is to share his powerful story and how he's alchemized his life and his troubles into something that serves others. Many others, as you'll find out when you hit play.

I strongly recommend checking this one out if you or someone you know has any form of disability. It's important not just to help each other along, but to gather perspective on the extra hurdles many of us face, how they're managed or overcome, and the radical change that can stem from all of the above.

(00:00:00) - Intro and Bonner's defining moment

(00:10:21) - Growing up with cerebral palsy

(00:14:31) - The different kinds of family rules, and how came to hide his CP

(00:20:44) - How Bonner used athleticism to both get attention and distract himself

(00:32:00) - The story of Jakey

(00:42:10) - How "dark motivation" got Bonner to the top, but couldn't get him down

(00:58:15) - Challenges of completing the Kona Triathlon

(01:04:10) - Next steps, and a return to Kilimanjaro

Talking points: fatherhood, parenting, mindset, culture

Taking time off as a man seems perfectly normal—until it’s done for a newborn. While I don’t disagree that a father can (and should) work to provide for his family, I also think that your presence is a deeply important factor in your kid’s development. Here’s my rationale.

(00:03:10) - The real reasons I took time off

(00:07:56) - How I’ve learned to define success

(00:11:52) - I challenge men to think differently about things when their children are born
