EP. 231: July 2023 News Roundup!20 Jul 202301:45:29

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum come together for another news episode! Discussion includes a lot what went on at Anime Expo a couple of weeks ago, such as the crew's Zom 100 fever and announcements from panels held by Noir Caesar, Trigger and Netflix! Along with our thoughts on how the live action One Piece series is shaping up after seeing the teaser and our picks for which new manga licenses have been announced over the past month as well! Due to time constraints, the episode is light on actual news compared to normal, but our Mavericks still have a lot of fun, laid-back discussion about all the cool stuff that's been coming out or that they have to look forward to! So enjoy that!

Check out the first episode of the Manga Mavericks Anime Club! A new podcast exclusively available on the Patreon where we'll be discussing various different anime! Starting with a blind watch-through of Hajime no Ippo!

Manga Mavericks EP. 151: "Shonen Jump's Sex Pest Problem"14 Mar 202103:01:09
We’re having a long-overdue conversation about Shonen Jump’s culpability in perpetuating sexism in both its workplace culture and in its series. More specifically, it’s time to have a serious talk about how it has been enabling and rehabilitating not one, not two, but THREE known pedophiles. When I say this podcast was long overdue, I mean it. We originally recorded this way back last August, back when news of Act-Age writer Tatsuya Matsuki’s arrest for groping two female middle school students broke and the ensuing fallout. Dejected and infuriated about the news, we gathered on friends of ours who previously loved Act-Age and were left as similarly furious at Jump’s terrible history with sex pests to vent about our criticisms of the magazine - Twitter friends Your Anime Guy and RinReadsManga, and Kendra from the My Hero Academia Podcast and View from the Top! Haikyu!! podcast. For context, we recorded this podcast on August 22nd 2020, two weeks after Matsuki’s arrest and before… everything that happened afterward. It’s astonishing and bewildering how many stories involving Jump and pedophiles have propagated recently, and even if this podcast was recorded before many of these stories occurred, I think our conversation addresses a lot of ever-relevant points on what Jump’s done wrong in the past when it comes to dealing with offending mangaka in their employ and their culpability in perpetuating a sexist culture that attracts such sex pests to work for them. I hope you’ll listen to our criticisms and calls to action with an open-mind, and that this will be part of a continuing conversation calling out Jump and any institution that feels comfortable in perpetuating sexist attitudes that endanger and victimize women and children. Also please keep in mind this is not our be-all, end-all podcast for calling out sexism in the anime and manga industry as a whole either. This podcast was recorded in response to the Matsuki news so we approached this topic from the perspective of Shonen Jump and Act-Age fans specifically, but there are more angles to the problems of sexism in the industry and community than what we could address from that lens in this podcast. That’s a much bigger, broader conversation that will require us to gather a lot more voices to give their input, and we intend to follow up on this podcast to address those necessary points and perspectives in the future. So, with all that context and those disclaimers given… well, there’s no clean way to transition into a conversation this heavy, and I’ve kept you all waiting seven months too long already, so let’s just jump in. Manga Mavericks @ Movies #48: Detective Conan 'Episode One'06 Mar 202102:03:36
Manga Mavericks @ Movies continues our coverage of TMS’s newly-dubbed releases of Detective Conan movies by going back to the beginning - literally! That’s right, we’re covering Detective Conan Episode “One” - the 20th-anniversary anime special remaking the show’s first episode! This special was the first Detective Conan movie released on home video in the US in nearly a decade, and the first chance most people got to experience the new dub cast TMS has assembled for the series! This is also actually the first podcast covering these new dubbed Detective Conan movies we did; we recorded this when the special came out last July, but didn’t get around to editing it until recently. But with Detective Conan’s 1000th episode right around the corner, now’s the perfect time to release this podcast and revisit this retelling! Joining us are none other than the curators of the Weekly Shogakukan Edition Twitter and blog, Sakaki and Jecka! Together we share our thoughts on the new dub, including our favorite new voices and the ones from the old FUNi dub we miss the most. We also discuss how the special expands the show’s first episode into a full-length film, digging into the added scenes, gratuitous cameos, and other adaptational differences between the special, the first episode, and the manga’s first chapter! So join us as we investigate the case of whether one truth still prevails! #Lum Squad #05: "Some Like It Hot Springs Emblem!"01 Mar 202102:46:25
Hello darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura! Continuing our read-through of Viz’s rerelease of the manga, we cover volume 7! This volume prominently features Onsen-Mark... sorry, “Hot Springs Emblem.” We still need to get used to that. But hey, his name change may leave us cold but some like it Hot Springs Emblem so who are we to judge? Anyway, everyone’s favorite bewildered and beleaguered educator gets the spotlight in a lot of chapters this volume, building off of the Tomobiki High-centric stories and Teachers vs Students conflict established last time. But this volume also features the notable returns of some old frenemies - Kurama and Tobimaro! Coincidentally, both are out for Mendo's head - in more ways than one! Man, Mendo gets into a lot of trouble in this volume, doesn’t he? We also talk about the series’s pop culture references, color pages, character dynamics, and so much more in another lengthy but jam-packed discussion of one of the series’ most eclectic volumes yet! Manga Mavericks @ Movies #47: Case Closed: Sunflowers of Inferno05 Feb 202100:57:11
Manga Mavericks @ Movies continues our coverage of TMS’s newly dubbed Detective Conan movies by discussing the 19th film in the franchise, Sunflowers of Inferno! It’s another showdown between Conan and his magician rival Phantom Thief Kid, but this time the infamous jewel thief is after… a painting? It’s up to Conan (and the viewers) to see through all the red herrings and figure out Kid’s artful scheme! In doing so, we must deduce the most important question of all: Is this film a genuine work of art, or another trash-fire like The Darkest Nightmare? There is always only one truth, and we’re here to tell it like it is! #Lum Squad #04: "New Year, New Chapters, New Podcast!"01 Feb 202102:15:36
Hello, darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura! We went back on an unexpected hiatus again last year, but hey, Viz’s second attempt to release UY in the 90s also unceremoniously stopped too. As they say, the third time’s the charm, and at least we’ve come back for our third try much faster than they did! Much like Viz’s regular releases of the series, we’re dedicated to resuming regular episodes of this podcast, which in our case will be monthly releases on the last friday of every month from here on out! We’ve already got some episodes banked and planned, and with more manga coming out and Discotek bringing the movies out later this year, there’ll always be plenty to talk about! Our plans for the next couple of episodes involve catching back up on the manga, starting with volume 6; the first volume featuring newly translated UY chapters from Viz in over 20 years! We excitedly discuss the first appearances of prominent characters like Kotastu Neko and Ryoko Mendou, the recurring conflict between the Tomobiki students and their teachers, and some classic stories playing around with japanese history and alien biology! Afterward, we dig into one of AC’s favorite hobbies - anime cel collecting! AC explains the history of cells, what the Urusei Yatsura cel market is like, and some of his favorite gets and most regretful misses. AC’s tips and tricks of the trade will be sure to help you get a start on building an awesome anime cel collection of your very own! So grab some tasty taiyaki and curl up in your comfiest kotatsu, and chill out listening to another lively episode of #Lum Squad! Manga Mavericks EP. 148: "Blank Canvas"26 Jan 202102:08:30
* Take the Manga Mavericks 5-Year Anniversary Survey and Enter to Win a Free manga! More Details Below!: https://s.surveyplanet.com/uwgeMjcMq * Art is hard. Did you know that? If not, Akiko Higashimura’s autobiographical memoir of her “so-called artist’s journey,” Blank Canvas, will school you in the fundamentals! To help us navigate Higashimura’s memories, we’re joined by Jenny McKeon, who translated the series for Seven Seas and is a seasoned comics artist herself! Jenny shares her experiences as both a manga translator and artist, sharing her insights into Higashimura’s chronicle and the relatability of her experiences. Plus, Lum shares their perspective on the series as someone who went to art school and in fact first read the series when they were still IN art school, and all the ways in which Higashimura’s experiences reflected their own. More than a chronicle of her early career, Blank Canvas is a tribute to Higashimura’s late mentor, Hidaka-sensei, and the impact he had on her and the grief and guilt she still carries for taking him for granted. It’s a very raw, emotionally-charged story that is sure to resonate with anyone with similar experiences, and we somehow manage to talk about it all without crying (though we came dangerously close)! So have a good laugh and cry with us as we embark on this journey into Higashimura’s past! Also, as a reminder - we’re approaching both the 150th episode of this podcast, and even more significantly - our 5th year anniversary! What will we do to commemorate our 150th episode? Why, our annual Manga Mavericks survey of course! But this won’t be a normal yearly survey, no, this one will encompass the entirety of the podcast’s history from our very first episode in 2016 to the present! You can vote for your favorite episodes, guests, moments, and so much more from the past five years of the show as well as your favorite manga and news stories! The survey is open until Sunday morning, January 31st, so you have just a bit over three weeks to submit your entries! More Details Below!* (https://s.surveyplanet.com/uwgeMjcMq) On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum travel to the Hole to take a look at Q Hayashida's Dorohedoro! A violent but wholesome tale of mystery and intrigue, as lizard man Caiman and his gyoza shop owner friend, Nikaido, search for answers about who he is and where he came from, but thats only scratching the surface of everything this series has to offer! We're joined by special guests and superfans, such as returning guests, Marion from the Good Friends Anime Club podcast and cosplayer extraordinaire Diana Soreil, as well as new guest, Ely, to talk about as much Dorohedoro as we can in one sitting! Special thanks to our lovely patrons on our Patreon whose support helped us acquire a good portion of the manga to be able to read for this episode! Unfortunately, we also have to start the episode off with addressing some not so good news involving a few now known sex criminals from the manga industry on both sides of the pond. One of them we'd previously had as a guest on our show before, but are taking the necessary steps towards removing them and any mentions of them from our show as not to associate ourselves with them. Afterwards though, you can hear about some actual good news including some small but exciting changes to our Patreon, as well as the celebration around the 1000th chapter of One Piece! But anyway, start ordering your gyoza now, because you'll be craving it after listening to us gush about Q Hayashida's masterpiece! Enjoy! More Details Below!: https://s.surveyplanet.com/uwgeMjcMq * Manga Mavericks @ Movies’ first episode of 2021 is none other than Lupin III: The First! While it’s not the first Lupin film we’ve covered on this podcast, it is a first for the franchise; its first 3DCG animated feature! Vix joins us to discuss our theatrical experience with the film, discussing it’s historical influences, homages to the franchise, and how the series’ iconic designs were translated into and animated in CG. This podcast is like a diary of our thoughts on the film, but unlike Bresson’s, it doesn’t contain any world-ending secrets! Or, does it?... More Details Below!: https://s.surveyplanet.com/uwgeMjcMq * Tite Kubo’s traded in Soul Reapers for Witches and Hollows for Dragons in his newest manga, but his storytelling is no less enchanting! To discuss what makes Kubo’s new series Burn the Witch so spellbinding, we’re delighted to have on the magically talented localization team for the series from Viz with us today - editor Pancha Diaz (Death Note, Skip Beat), translator Jan Mitsuko Cash (Happy Sugar Life, Toradora), and letterer Vanessa Satone (One Piece, Tokyo Ghoul)! It’s always a pleasure when we can invite the localization team of a series on the show to share their perspectives and experiences on the work. We had a lot of fun doing that with Kaiju No. 8 recently, and since Burn the Witch was such a big new series what with it being Tite Kubo’s follow-up to Bleach and all, we really wanted to have an in-depth conversation about it! We discuss Pancha, Jan, and Vanessa’s career journeys, their experience working on Burn the Witch, and their thoughts on the series, how it compares with Bleach, and where we hope to see the story go next! We also have some exciting news to announce! We’re approaching both the 150th episode of this podcast, and even more significantly - our 5th year anniversary! But that’s not all, because we want to give back to our listeners for supporting us these past five years, and we’re doing so with another manga giveaway! All survey takers will be entered for a chance to win a free manga volume of their choosing from our catalog, which includes fresh hits like Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun and High Score Girl to classics like Video Girl Ai and even some old Shonen Jump issues! To top it off, you can earn even more entries in the giveaway if you guys also write us a review on Apple Podcasts between now and when the survey closes and send proof of your review to us via our e-mail at mangamavericks@gmail.com or Twitter, and if you send us an e-mail sharing your thoughts on the show and your experiences with it since you’ve started listening! Manga Mavericks EP. 142: "Kase-san and.... a Podcast!"14 Dec 202002:02:55
Just when you thought you polished off the last of your Thanksgiving leftovers, LGBThanksgiving concludes with one last juicy podcast stuffed full of queer manga goodness! Hope you’re hungry, because this is a big one - our retrospective of the defining yuri manga of the 2010’s, Kase-san! We couldn’t digest a series this savory by ourselves, so we invited on some yuri connoisseurs to help us devour all the gay girly goodness - TomoChoco hosts Kit and Sarah and returning guest Erica Friedman, founder of Okazu and Yuricon! Together we feast on the wonderful bounty of yuri loveliness Kase-san provides, including its resilient publication history, the sweet relationship of its central couple, its mature exploration of their libidos, how it boldly graduates them from high school to college, and so much more! Though, we also go on many tangents too, discussing an assortment of sorta related things like how much better Tokyo’s transit is compared to New York’s, the best anime to watch at the gym, dubs vs. subs, and other random things! But we mostly keep it on track to talk about Kase, and everything we love about this trailblazing, decade-spanning yuri staple! And with all that said, this podcast brings us to the end of LGBThanksgiving! I apologize for the delay on this last installment - I didn’t mean for it to release this half-way into December instead of the end of November, but like I said last time, sometimes it’s good to let Thanksgiving bleed into Christmas rather than the other way around for once. But I want to give my big hearty thanks to all our wonderful guests these past few episodes - Jocelyne Allen, Anne Ishii, Jax Cottrell, Kit, Sarah, and Erica - and a big thank you to all our listeners for enjoying our conversations with them! We definitely plan to cover a lot more queer manga on the show next year, so look forward to having another gay old time with us on more queer occaisions in the future! Manga Mavericks EP. 141: Noir Caeser & Hanakotoba w/Jax Cottrell26 Nov 202001:55:58
Just in time for the turkey day itself, LGBThanksgiving continues with another special interview! We’ve spotlighted manga localizers before, but on this episode we’re excited to host on the show someone who’s making their own manga, and has been doing great work sharing theirs and others’ diverse voices and perspectives by producing manga, animation, blog posts, analysis videos, interviews, merchandise and apparel, and so much more! Jaqueline-Elizabeth "Jax" Cottrell is the digital content strategist for Noir Caeser Entertainment and one of the most amazingly prolific and multi-talented people in anime fandom! Jax joins us to chat about their journey from fan to professional, sharing their background as an anime fan, how they got started with Noir Ceaser, and their new manga - Hanakotoba: The Language of Flowers! They also share their thoughts on the Black anime community, making spaces for Black fans and creators, and the importance of authentic and accurate representation. Manga Mavericks EP. 139: "Our Dreams at Dusk"08 Nov 202001:42:59
Our Dreams at Dusk is a beautiful manga that explores characters across the LGBTQ+ spectrum in different phases of their life, struggling to be accepted for being themselves, and finding a community and support network in one another. It made waves when Seven Seas released it in English last year, and after reading it we knew we had to talk about it on the show! We’ve also brought on a very special guest to discuss the series with us - Jocelyne Allen, translator of Our Dreams at Dusk and so many other amazing manga! Jocelyne shares her insights on the series as its translator, shedding some light on some pivotal scenes and language used in the story. She also discusses her career history in translation, including her early career as a translator for Honda, differences between translating novels and manga, her experiences interpreting, and so much more! We had a delightful conversation with Jocelyne, discussing everything that makes this manga such a dream come true for queer manga fans of all ages! But our dream doesn’t end with this podcast! Throughout this month we’ll be releasing podcasts about different LGBTQ manga in a loose theme month we’re calling LGBThanksgiving! Look forward to more interviews with translators and creators and discussions of beloved series about love in the coming weeks! Manga Mavericks EP. 137: "Mujirushi"30 Oct 202001:55:50
Boo! That’s the sound a vuvuzela makes, at least according to the series we’re talking about today. That’s right, Naoki Urasawa superfan and lettering enthusiast Aidan joins us to discuss the first Urasawa manga we’re covering on the show - Mujirushi: The Sign of Dreams! We discuss how the series reflects Urasawa’s storytelling principles while differing stylistically in interesting ways, and gush over his art and color pages! We also discuss the lettering found in Urasawa’s books, translation differences across different editions, and the layout of the book itself! Oh, and of course, we analyze Urasawa’s reinterpretation of everyone’s favorite buck-toothed francophile from the Osomatsu-kun franchise, and the surprising depth Urasawa brings out in such a silly character! So head the vuvuzela’s call and listen closely to our discussion of this bande dessinee! Sheeh! On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum *attempt* to catch up on at least some of the latest simulpub manga titles that have popped up over the past three months. Unfortunately, they only managed to cover 6 titles, but 6 pretty good ones! We start off with Crescent Moon Marching from Azuki, and then transition into a few new titles over on Manga Plus. All ranging in tone from comedic and slightly heart-warming titles like Stan for Salvation, Service Wars and The Pension Life Vampire, to straight horror with Jinrui-Shoku: Blight of Man and Shibatarian! Join us again in a couple episodes as our Mavericks work with much more recording time to try and cover and discuss the rest of the simulpubs they still have to get to! Including the newest batch of series from Shonen Jump, but until then, enjoy!

Check out the newest bonus podcast on our Patreon discussing our thoughts on Knights of the Zodiac! The Hollywood live-action adaptation of Saint Seiya!

Manga Mavericks EP. 133: "Black Representation in Anime/Manga"20 Sep 202002:37:41
Anime and manga are beloved worldwide and enjoyed by passionate fans of all walks of life. However, marginalized voices are often not represented or visible in community events, conversations, or the media we enjoy itself. But POC fans and creatives have done so much great and essential work for this fandom, Black fans in particular. Recently there’s been a long-overdue movement in creative and professional circles to amplify and spotlight the voices of Black creatives in fandoms and industries, and I want to use Manga Mavericks to amplify more Black voices in the community and have a critical conversation about representation and inclusivity. In this spirit, we invited on a group of Black creatives who’ve long advocated for these critical conversations and championed spaces to highlight diverse perspectives to discuss their experiences as Black anime fans. Our guests are the Black Manga Critic, an anime/manga Youtuber who does live-stream read-throughs of series he loves while also doing vlogs discussing broader problems plaguing discourse and the mistreatment of marginalized groups in the community. Eunice Ibama, the founder of BlackGirlsAnime, an organization that promotes the visibility and perspectives of black women through social media, and website publishing reviews and editorials written by black fans - BGA news. Naja Beck, who runs the Otome and BL-focused blog Blerdy Otome, who has also written extensively about the representation of Black characters in media through her Melanin Monday features. And Ash, also known as TheMacabreChap, who runs the mecha-focused podcast Build Casters and is the creator of the Black Anime Podcast directory, which is a resource dedicated to being compiling the extensive list of podcasts hosted by Black Anime fans and promoting their work! BMC, Eunice, Naja, and Ash share their experiences enjoying anime as kids, close-calls hiding salacious anime from nosy parents, being judged for liking anime or anime of certain kinds, and the various forms of gatekeeping and discrimination they’ve witnessed or experienced themselves as black anime fans, and what we can do to foster better communities and representation for people of color. Much thanks to BMC, Eunice, Naja, and Ash for their time and perspectives. I’m proud of how this conversation turned out, and I hope our listeners enjoy and learn from it! Manga Mavericks EP. 132: September 2020 News Roundup14 Sep 202002:24:29
On this Manga Mavericks, its once again time for another news roundup, but this time we try something different! Its a slight change in format compared to how the Mavericks normally report on news, but it gives them the time and energy to report on and discuss other more pressing matters like the recent statement from Amimaru regarding their questionable translation wages, the noticeable increase in other countries' need of legal streaming anime after the shut down of pirate site KissAnime and more!! Manga Mavericks EP. 131: Kaiju No. 8 (and the Simulpub Process)07 Sep 202002:52:48
On this monster-sized episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum talk about Naoya Matsumoto's Kaiju No. 8, a new series from Shonen Jump that takes in a world where humanity battles against giant monsters, starring a protagonist who's job it is to clean up after those battles, but ends up deciding to pursue his dream of being a soldier to engage in actual combat...but not before he himself gains the ability to turn into a monster! Our Mavericks go the extra mile with not just discussing their thoughts on this new hit series, but also invite on the entire localization team responsible for bringing new chapters to English readers every week, including editor Karla Clark,  translator David Evelyn, and past guest, letterer Brandon Bovia (who may or may not be an industry legend)! The Mavericks discuss with this lovely trio about the process of simulpubbing a series and the thought that goes into every single decision made in process, whether it be choosing the right type and size of font for the dialogue or translating certain honorifics. Manga Mavericks EP. 130: Irodori Sakura (and more!!)18 Aug 202003:14:03
On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum once again tackle more news from the world of manga! We also discuss a lot of new manga from various publishers, including three new doujinshi from Irodori Comics' LGBTQ-focused imprint Irodori Sakura, as well as three new simulpubs! We start off with the manga adaptation of Japan Sinks 2020 exclusively on Mangamo, followed by Ghost Reaper Girl from Shonen Jump, and last but not least, Lockdown Zone: Level X from Denpa! It's a cool collection of new series that we were very excited to talk about and we hope you all check them out!  Unfortunately, we also had to address the arrest of Tatsuya Matsuki, the writer of Act-Age, and the subsequent fallout, such as the cancellation of the series in Shonen Jump and everything else related to it. Our hearts go out to the victims of Matsuki's crimes, as well as Shiro Usazaki, whose artistic talent was responsible for bringing the world and characters of Act-Age to life, and we hope she is able to find more work and success in the future. It goes without saying that we here at Manga Mavericks will NOT be supporting or reviewing any of Matsuki's works in the future and will be dedicating a future episode to our frustrations with the sexist workplace culture at Shonen Jump that has unfortunately festered and harbored multiple predators. Manga Mavericks EP. 128: "Blue Flag"03 Aug 202003:19:00
Blue Flag is a wonderful coming-of-age story in which characters navigate the difficult mores of identity, relationships, love, sexuality, and the choices we make. In the second part of our retrospective on KAITO’s manga, special guests Maxy Barnard, Ace Christman, and SimplyGee! join us to discuss the broader themes of the story and the way in which it articulates them in uniquely impactful, relatable ways. First we share our history with the series and KAITO, and give a spoiler-free review of the first volume to describe what sets this story apart from other romantic dramas through its characters, themes, and art! Then we discuss the series as a whole, honing in on specific characters like Masumi and Mami and exploring their roles in the story, empathizing with the feelings of self-loathing and defeatism in our main trio of protagonists. We also answer some listener questions addressing some of the more complicated, and controversial, parts of the story - including how it handles its LGBTQ representation, the mixed messages in the conversation with Kensuke, the flash-forward ending, and more! In the time since we’ve recorded this, Blue Flag has been added to the Shonen Jump Vault! Please check it out and support the release! We have a lot of love for this series about love, and we hope you love it just as much! Manga Mavericks EP. 127: Cross Manage19 Jul 202002:43:55
On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum are joined by special guests, Maxy Barnard of Friendship Effort Victory, Marion from the Good Friends Anime Club, as well as Aisha from the MommaLuvsManga Youtube Channel, to talk about Cross Manage from Kaito! Cross Manage is a sports series about teenager Sakurai, an ex-soccer player who is roped into serving as the problem solving manager of his high school's lacrosse team. This is also another series unfortunately cut short by Weekly Shonen Jump, but also had a full simulpubbed run in English back when Viz's Shonen Jump was in its Alpha phase, as such, this is another "cancelled Shonen Jump manga" podcast, which we will from now on be referring to as "Jump Stop" podcasts! Get it, cause its the opposite of "Jump Starts"? D'aaah, you get it, you get it... Cross Manage in particular may be the most beloved of these "pre-Jump Start" series licensed and simulpubbed by Viz Media, so of course we spend a lot of time discussing it from a ton of different angles: From Kaito's composition and paneling, to the story's themes of effort and perseverance, as well as just why its run in Shonen Jump may have been cut short. Join us next week as we discuss Kaito's more recent series, Blue Flag!! Manga Mavericks EP. 124: "Love Me For Who I Am"30 Jun 202001:43:56
If Love Me For Who I Am’s non-binary maid is reporting for duty, then our non-binary host is recording a podcast about it! That’s right, we’re reviewing the first volume of a newly released series on the show this time! We haven’t spotlighted a lot of new releases recently, but we had to make an exception for this exceptional manga exploring gender and the LGBTQ community in Japan in a way we’ve rarely seen. Joining us to discuss the series is someone who’s basically become its ambassador on MangaTwitter, Ashley Hakker from Anime Herald! Ashley helps us dig into each of the series’ fantastic cast of characters, core themes, and beautiful artwork, exploring what makes it such a sweet, one-of-a-kind story! We also spend some time discussing a topic close to LumRanmaYasha - the recent #FUCKSVA initiative - and why the School of Visual Arts needs to make long overdue changes to make its campus a safe learning environment for students. It’s a more serious topic sandwiched in the middle of two relatively more light-hearted parts of the podcast, but again, we’re committed to having conversations important topics affecting the community on the show and advocating for change, so we hope you also look into what’s going on at SVA and help the students there fight for a better education too. We’re also committed to spotlighting the great work people are doing in our community, and since our review was on the shorter end this time, we had the opportunity for a special-sized community Shout-Outs segment spotlighting over a dozen awesome articles, podcasts, and videos to check out! So enjoy this podcast and check out Love Me For Who I Am as well as the work of all the great people we recommend in this episode! Manga Mavericks EP. 122: Moriking, Bone Collection,Time Paradox15 Jun 202001:20:21
Geez, between all the series starting and ending in Shonen Jump recently, it sure feels like the brand is entering a new era. Heck, by the end of 2020 over half of the lineup will consist of series that only started this year! There are so many new series starting up that we’re getting up our episode on the last batch just as the new batch has started. Actually, there’s been a new series every month so far this year - it’s hard to keep up! Well, before we can talk about Ayakashi Triangle and the other new blood starting up, we still have to take care of some leftovers. Is Moriking a supremely funny gag comedy or did we want to squash it like a bug? Was Bone Collection bad to the bone? Did we have the time of our lives reading Time Paradox Ghost Writer? Does the Food Wars duo’s new one-shot Yugen’s All-Ghouls Classroom have a ghost of a chance at becoming a regular series in Jump? Is there anything substantial to say about any of these beyond quips and puns? Eh, honestly I wish we’d read more chapters before reviewing Time Paradox. We recorded this a month ago so we only got to read the first chapter before the show, so a bunch of our speculation about how the relationship between Teppei and Aino would turn out is a bit out of date… Ah well, we actually do have a lot of stuff to say about it and the other new series, so it’s all good! Enjoy our thoughts and recommendations of some of Jump’s newest stuff, and look forward to us talking about even more new Jump series very, very soon! Manga Mavericks EP. 121: "Who Did Sesshomaru F*CK?!?!"11 Jun 202002:33:09
Black Lives Matter.  Manga Mavericks stands in support of Black Americans and against the systemic racism and violence perpetrated by the police and the U.S. government.  There are many ways to help the Black Lives Matter movement, be it engaging in the protests yourselves or by donating to those fighting on the front lines. We’ve included links in the description of this podcast for people to learn more about petitions to sign and places to donate. We’ve donated all of our Patreon earnings from this year and hundreds of our own dollars to Bail Funds and Charities supporting progressive movements for change across the country, and if you can give, we strongly encourage you to do so. Otherwise, you can even watch videos donating all their ad money to charities too. Again, there are many ways to help, and every bit counts. To quote a great moment from The Boondocks: "What do you do when you can't do nothing, but there's nothing you can do?" "You do what you can."  In that spirit, we’re also supporting and amplifying Black creatives in our community. We’ll be leaving links to them and their work, and links of where to find other great Black creatives doing great work in this community. Please check all these fine folks out. We’ll also be leaving links to organizations, charities, and petitions to help support Black Lives Matter protests and victims of police brutality.  There’s another tragic bit of news we also must address: Zac Bertschy passed away on the week of May 19th, 2020. Zac was the executive editor in chief at Anime News Network, overseeing its editorial department. He was the host of ANNcast, the writer of Vice and Luna, and the original Answerman. He was always, in my eyes, the face, voice, and heart of Anime News Network. We’ll be leaving links to various people’s tributes and memories of Zac, including the final ANNcast, and links to some of the work of his I really appreciated over the years, including Answerman, ANNcast, Vice & Luna, his reviews of Death Parade and Keep Your Hands off Eizouken, and many others.   There’s so much to say about Zac Bertschy and the legacy he’s left. But right now, there’s just one thing that I must say: Rest in Peace, Zac. See you over the rainbow. This is a news episode that was delayed and made sort of out of date because of the above stories and others that happened almost immediately after we recorded it in mid-May. Please keep that in mind as you listen through that there’s a lot of parts re-recorded or added on after the fact. That said, we had a lot to cover, including the endings of some popular series, new license announcements, COVID-related delays, Netflix additions, and the titular question on everyone’s mind: Who Did Sesshomaru FUCK?! There’s plenty of news we don’t cover in this episode we’ll get to in a future installment, but it’s good to break these things up anyway lest we have another four-hour long podcast. You can be sure that this will also not be the last time we discuss Black Lives Matter and have conversations on important political and social topics on the show either. What’s going on matters way more than any of the manga we talk about, so while we hope to entertain with our podcast, we also want to make sure we don’t distract from what’s going on in the world and are amplifying voices and causes that matter.  Please visit the webpage of this podcast for the list of links we included in this post: http://all-comic.com/2020/manga-mavericks-ep-121-who-did-sesshomaru-fck PODCAST BREAKDOWN: 00:00 - Black Lives Matter 03:35 - Community Shout-Outs: Black Creatives in our Community You Should Follow 14:14 - Intro & Patron Thank You News: 16:05 - New York Times May List 17:20 - April Bookscan list  22:44 - Demon Slayer’s Ending, Spinoffs, & Circulation Numbers 28:36 - Yuuna of the Haunted Hot Springs ends  30:02 - Bunta Kinami’s RWBY: The Official Manga ends  32:04 - Hinamatsuri ends on July 15th 32:45  - Oda’s One Pi
#Lum Squad #03: "The Return of Lum Squad!"01 Jun 202001:31:28
Hello, darlings! Welcome to the return of our Urusei Yatsura podcast, Lum Squad! Well, technically we already returned in last month's episode, but there was actually a year-long break in between recording that and this episode! Think of it as like how there was a break between Viz's original publication of "Lum" that prompted their continuation being re-titled "The Return of Lum." Except we're not re-titling this podcast; it didn't work in the 90's and it ain't happening now. Anyways, because it'd been so long since AC and I recorded the show, we decided to spend this episode going through all the UY volumes Viz has released in the past year and share our thoughts on them! We discuss our favorite chapters, characters, the translation, lettering, and pretty much everything! Oh, and you KNOW we ranted about the whole "Hot Springs Emblem" situation. I really hope Viz reconsiders that name... Afterward, we dive into the Urusei Yatsura fan community, exploring its history and current state now! Look forward to our next episode where we'll dive into our experiences collecting Urusei Yatsura merch and memorabilia! Oh, and of course, if you haven't heard the news that Discotek has relicensed the Urusei Yatsura movies and plans to release them on streaming and blu-ray later this year - yeah, that's happening! We're more than excited and looking forward to discussing the new and the films in future episodes! Music Featured: “Kokoroboisona” from Jam Trip: Urusei Yatsura (Vol. 1) “Uchuu wa Tai Hen Da! Manga Mavericks EP. 120: Chihayafuru18 May 202001:59:33
On this episode of Manga Mavericks, we're joined by new guest Kory from the Taiiku Podcast, as well as our old friends, Bomber (Sakaki) and Jecka from the WSS Talkbalk blog and Twitter, to talk about Yuki Suetsugu's Chihayafuru manga! Chihayafuru is a high school, sports series centering on Chihaya Ayase, who is inspired by her new friends to play the Japanese card game known as karuta, and from then on becomes obsessed with it to the point of forming a team in high school to seriously compete in tournaments all across nation to become the best in Japan! Our Mavericks both recently read all of whatever was available of the manga from Kodansha USA and instantly became filled with passion while experiencing players from all walks of life competing in matches against each other in a game that requires more then just knowing a few Japanese poems! We discuss how amazing the series is from the first volume alone, as well as why readers will become enamored with the matches that take place despite any language barriers! Afterwards, we even get to answer some Chihayafuru-related questions from the listeners! Enjoy! The Manga Mavericks are talking television! Welcome to the first episode of a new irregular podcast series in the vein of @ Movies, except the titular focus this time is the wonderful world of television and streaming shows (except for Anime, which is already covered by & Anime). We’ll be chatting about tv shows we’ve seen and have a lot to say about, and giving reviews of new and upcoming series! We have a very special show to talk about on this inaugural installment! We got the opportunity to check out Apple TV’s new show Central Park, a musical comedy by the creators of Bob’s Burgers. The show drops on Apple TV on May 29th, but we were able to watch the first four episodes a few weeks early! So we’re giving our first impressions on the show, what makes its characters and music special, and how these early episodes stack up against the first seasons of this creative team’s previous shows. By the time you’re done listening, I’m sure Central Park will be central in your heart! Manga Mavericks EP. 118: Dragon Ball04 May 202004:27:00
On this episode of Manga Mavericks, we invite on the show Shonen Sunday enthusiast Bomber D. Rufi (aka Sakaki) and comics artist Joey Weiser (Mermin, Ghost Hog) to talk about Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga! After many delays and and much rescheduling, Colton and Lum finally talk about the series that means more to them then just being an excellent comic, but a franchise that's been with them for almost their entire lives! A franchise that went from being the biggest manga in Japan, to one of the biggest shows on Cartoon Network in North America years later, to one of the biggest multimedia empires arguably within the past decade introducing tons of new manga, anime, video games, etc. to further expand upon Toriyama's beloved "Dragon World". The Mavericks and friends spend a some time reminiscing about how they got into the series via airings on Toonami and even fansub VHS tapes, afterwards they attempt to go through the entire series arc-by-arc in order to thoroughly discuss anything and everything they can about it, such as which parts of the story are their favorites, as well certain problematic elements that have become more unavoidable and harder to ignore as we've grown older. Can our heroes cover the entirety of the series before the end of the podcast!? Find out...on DRAGON BALL Z!!! I mean, Manga Mavericks....enjoy. Manga Mavericks EP. 117: "Urusei Yatsura"26 Apr 202002:42:02
It’s time to put weird together, and make it even weirder! It’s not just my imagination filling me with anticipation, because we’re talking about none other than Rumiko Takahashi’s planet-rocking hit manga Urusei Yatsura! And we have plenty of cause to celebrate, because we have passed the first year anniversary of the manga’s republication by Viz Media! This is an exciting time to be a Urusei Yatsura fan, and no better time to officially cover it on the show! Long-time listeners may remember that I previously recorded a spin-off podcast called #LumSquad last year where me and my friend AC discussed the first volume of Viz’s new omnibus edition and explored some of the series’ history there. But we always intended to cover Urusei Yatsura on Manga Mavericks as well, and we’ve got a great balance of first-time readers and long-time fans on today to talk about it; our good friend and frequent guest Vix, and first-time guest Dawn from the Anime Nostalgia Podcast! Together we discuss how we got into the series, mine and Dawn’s thoughts revisiting the early parts of the series, and Vix and Colton’s impressions as first-time readers. We also explore the differences between Viz’s original 90’s releases of the manga and the new editions, and Dawn shares anecdotes about AnimEigo’s release of the anime and being a UY fan in the early 90s! Plus, we rant about a certain inexplicable name change, gush over the possibilities of a modern UY anime, and share our favorite chapters from these early volumes! All in all, we spend over two hours celebrating the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s magnum opus! But wait, there’s more! If you’re looking for more thoughts on the Urusei Yatsura anime, check out the second episode of #LumSquad! AC and I explore the anime’s production history, how the show changes over its run, the incredible production staff and vocal talent on the show, and tons more! Just like this show, we spend over two and a half hours discussing the series, and we’ve barely even scratched the surface of what we wanted to talk about! Urusei Yatsura is a treasure trove offering a wealth of topics to explore, and I’m really excited to talk more about the series and everything I love about it in future episodes of #LumSquad!
