| Total Eclipse of the Eternal Heart / I Married My Best Friend to Shut My Parents Up | 14 May 2020 | 00:20:28 | |
I need to watch more KBO, but they're on so early, and I forget to watch the ESPN on demand streams. Someone's gotta remind me, so I can properly root for the Giants. This episode, we're talking about Syundei's Total Eclipse of the Eternal Heart and Kodama Naoko's I Married My Best Friend to Shut My Parents Up, both published by Seven Seas. | Banned Book Club | 10 May 2020 | 00:25:01
I am extremely open about this, but it's not like I yell "I AM KOREAN" at the top of every episode, but I am Korean. I was adopted too, and I don't know much about Korean culture, history, or anything else. Which is why I'm glad books such as Banned Book Club exist, so I can read about some history by way of comics. This time, I'm doing something a little different; I'm interviewing Ryan Estrada, one half of the writing team for Banned Book Club! Here's what the publisher, Iron Circus Comics, has to say about Banned Book Club: The gripping true story of a South Korean woman’s student days under an authoritarian regime in the early 1980s, and how she defied state censorship through the rebellion of reading. If you want more interviews with Ryan, and including Kim Hyun Sook, here's two cool interviews, one from Foreword Reviews and one from Rich in Color. The song you heard in the episode is "Noonside" by Yaeji. As always, you can find me on Twitter @ImpassionateK, and my co-hosts Helen (@WanderinDreamr) and Apryll (@manjiorin) on Twitter at those places in the parenthesis. You can find both of their writing at The Organization of Anti-Social Geniuses, more of Helen's writing at Narrative Investigations, and my writing at the Fandom Post. And you can find my review of Banned Book Club on the Fandom Post. Show notes: There are no show notes; I just interviewed Ryan about Banned Book Club. The Busan Lotte Giants are 5-0 baby!! Top of the KBO, the hometown team finally comes through. Can't wait to be disappointed at some point this season. This episode, I have a special guest, Chris (@gokuffy), talking about two adaptations of No Longer Human! The first is Usamaru Furuya's, published by Vertical, then it's Junji Ito's, published by Viz. The song you heard in this episode was "Human After All" by Daft Punk. | KAITO: Cross Manage / Blue Flag | 30 Apr 2020 | 00:27:15

| Ristorante Paradiso / Downfall | 16 Apr 2020 | 00:22:22 | |
Going out is hard now, not just because it is relatively anxiety inducing, but because the masks fog up my glasses and the bandanas keep falling off, so it's a lose-lose-lose proposition no matter what. My only release is running, which is a different kind of lose. This episode we're talking about Natsume Ono's Ristorante Paradiso and Inio Asano's Downfall, both published by Viz. It's also more spoiler-y than usual, so heads up. The song you heard in the episode were "Marigold" by orange pekoe and "Suteki na Kajitsu" by Lisa Komine from the Ristorante Paradiso anime. | Magi / Classmates | 02 Apr 2020
Podcasts are a good way, during this time of stay-at-home orders and global pandemics, to have real human interaction with real other humans, and not just coworkers over IM or email or gritting through your teeth at the other folks in line at the grocery store, praying they don't cough. Anyway, stay safe everyone, and wash your hands. This episode, we're talking about Shinobu Ohtaka's Magi published by Viz and Asumiko Nakamura's Classmates published by Seven Seas. The song you heard on this episode is "The Bravery" by supercell from the Magi anime. | Rose of Versailles / Cats of the Louvre | 19 Mar 2020
I, as my Manga In Your Ears co-hosts, have been working from home for the past few days in an attempt not to spread a pandemic. Sports has stopped in the US and Canada, so I can't even talk about my newfound fandom of the Vancouver Canucks (not that I know anything about hockey still). On the plus side, the air quality in LA is GREAT. Ban cars. This episode, we're talking about Riyoko Ikeda's Rose of Versailles published by Udon and Taiyo Matsumoto's Cats of the Louvre published by Viz. The songs you can hear in the episode are "Bara wa Utsukushiku Chiru" and "Ai no Hikari to Kage," both by Hiroko Suzuki from the Rose of Versailles anime. | With the Light / Laid Back Camp | 07 Feb 2020 | 00:26:36
Mookie Betts was traded to the Dodgers! Except maybe not because of medical particulars surrounding Brusdar Graterol, the greatest name in baseball, but also a fireballing probably reliever when the Red Sox wanted a starter. I sure hope this trade still goes through, because I will be a very sad Dodger fan if it does not. If they can keep Kenta Maeda, though, that'd be cool. This episode, we're talking about Keiko Tobe's With the Light and Afro's Laid Back Camp, both published by Yen Press. The song you heard at the top of the episode was "SHINY DAYS" by Asaka from the Laid Back Camp anime. We're back from holiday break! The Astros cheated to win the World Series and get to another one, and also in the season in between. The players should be much more punished than they are, but labor negotiations maybe?!?! This episode, we're talking about Yuki Midorikawa's Natsume's Book of Friends published by Viz and Akiko Higashimura's Blank Canvas: My So-Called Artist's Journey published by Seven Seas. | Top Manga of 2019 | 19 Dec 2019 | 00:24:42
I think I mentioned somewhere in these ramblings that I became a Clippers fan the moment Kawhi signed and Paul George was traded there, and with that has apparently come a passing interest in shoes. So RIP me for an added random fandom. Also my audio is still weird and wonky and not great, so apologies for that. Hopefully I have fixed it for the next podcast...we'll see. This episode, we're just counting down three (each) of our favorite manga we read in 2019! The song you heard at the top of the episode was "Juice" by Lizzo, and the song at the end was "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X. | I Cross-Dressed for the IRL Meetup / The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All | 19 Jun 2025
This week, baseball nerds across the internet (there are ones of us!!) are participating in a fan exchange, just to see how the other side lives. As a die hard and lifelong fan of the White Sox, Mariners, Padres, Dodgers, Brewers, Giants fan, I am too, but just by switching who's number one. Go Brewers. Love Salvatore. This episode, we're talking about Kurano's I Cross-Dressed for the IRL Meetup published by Kodansha and Sumiko Arai's The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All published by Yen Press. | Banana Fish / The Golden Sheep | 19 Dec 2019 | 00:28:08
Whoops, it's been two week and I completely forgot to edit this episode, so here's what's about to be two episodes in quick succession! Hope you don't mind. Also I got a new motherboard and reinstalled windows, so my audio may be of very questionable quality. Apologies in advance. This episode, we're talking about Akimi Yoshida's Banana Fish published by Viz and Kaori Ozaki's The Golden Sheep published by Kodansha. The song you heard at the top of the episode was "found & lost" by Survive Said The Prophet from the Banana Fish anime. | Wish / Chihayafuru | 11 Nov 2019 | 00:26:10
Per Helen...The Washington Nationals are World Series champions! I personally couldn't root for them during the NLCS, having defeated the Dodgers in a full NLDS, but they put the Cardinals to rest in a short four games and then faced the biggest villains of them all, toxic masculinity—I mean the Houston Astros. And they were defeated, thus finally given them their just dues. Between the NHL Capitals, the WNBA Mystics, and now the MLB Nationals, beltway sports is a bunch of success and also the football racists still. This episode, we're talking about CLAMP's Wish published by Dark Horse (formerly Tokyopop) and Yuki Suetsugu's Chihayafuru published digitally by Kodansha. The songs you heard in the episode were "Colorful" and "Youthful" both by 99RadioService and both from the Chihayafuru anime. | Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju / Spy x Family | 20 Oct 2019 | 00:31:13
It's playoff time for a lot of things! LAFC has the first round bye in MLS, the Chicago Red Stars just won their semifinal match in NWSL, and nothing is good about baseball. Also basketball is about to start again, and I'm looking forward to jumping onto the Clippers x Kawhi bandwagon. Also, and I can't believe we're already here, but this is our 50th episode! I want to thank everyone for listening to us through this point, and thanks to Helen and Apyrll for joining me on this journey through manga. I've read or reread a lot of great manga, and I'm glad to be able to do this with friends. This, our 50th, episode we're talking about Haruko Kumota's Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju published by Kodansha and Tatsuya Endo's Spy x Family published by Viz. Playoff baseball is here, and I couldn't be more pleased. I can finally watch Dodger baseball without going to Dodger Stadium! Sports blackout rules are dumb. This episode, we're talking about CLAMP's Legal Drug published by Dark Horse and Mari Okada (writer) and Nao Emoto's (illustrator) O Maidens in Your Savage Season published by Kodansha. Forgot to write a whole thing until I was already done, so just here to say the Bears squeaked by in a game they should have lost and the White Sox season means NOTHING. Also looking forward to following the Clippers for the first time ever. This episode, we get closer and closer to the New World, first finishing off Thriller Bark, then arriving on the Sabaody Archipelago, and finally landing on Amazon Lily. | Assassination Classroom / Witch Hat Atelier | 01 Sep 2019 | 00:29:41
College football is back, and NFL football is about to be back, and while I have just about every problem one could have with a particular organization, I still love football as a sport. They just need to...make it safer. Anyway, Iowa State grabbed their first win against fellow statesmen UNI in a thriller, so I'm glad for the distraction from White Sox baseball. This episode, we're talking about Yusei Matsui's Assassination Classroom published by Viz and Kamome Shirahama's Witch Hat Atelier published by Kodansha. The song you heard at the top of the episode is "Seishun Satsubatsu-ron" by 3-nen E-gumi Utatan. | Tegami Bachi / Delinquent Housewife | 22 Jun 2019 | 00:45:25
The NBA draft was yesterday as I type this, and while I have no true team beyond the Iowa State Cyclones, I do have favorite players. and I support all Cyclones on their endeavors in the NBA. Now with LeBron, AD, and THT in LA, maybe I'll go see a game. This episode, we're talking about Hiroyuki Asada's Tegami Bachi published by Viz Media and Nemu Yoko's Delinquent Housewife published by Vertical Comics. That song you heard at the top of the episode was "Hajimari no Hi" by Shikao Suga feating Mummy-D from the Tegami Bachi anime. | One Piece: Skypeia – Thriller Bark | 20 Jun 2019 | 01:32:23
The joy was short lived, the White Sox dropped the next day's game against the Cubs behind the worst game in a while for Lucas Giolito. Sports is rough. This episode, we continue our journey across the Grand Line with the Skypiea through the Thriller Bark arc of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece published by Viz. The song you heard at the top of the episode was "Kokoro no Chizu" by BOYSTYLE, and the song you heard at the end of the episode was "Dreamship" by Aiko Ikuta, both from the One Piece anime. | Fruits Basket / Drifting Dragons | 20 Jun 2019 | 00:42:19
The White Sox win at Wrigley Field behind Eloy Jimenez's two-run home run in the top of the ninth, and that's all I'm really thinking about right now. Also Zeno from Yona of the Dawn, coming sometime to Manga In Your Ears. This episode, we're revisiting Natsuki Takaya's Fruits Basket published by Yen Press and Taku Kuwabara's Drifting Dragons published by Kodansha. You can listen to our first Fruits Basket episode here. The song you heard at the top of the episode was "Again" by Beverly, and the song you heard at the end of the episode was "Lucky Ending" by Vickeblanka. | Beck / Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card | 18 Apr 2019 | 00:30:28
I tweeted earlier that all the Manga In Your Ears episodes were done and edited, then I went and recorded another one, so all but one are recorded. Also I still have three Taiiku episodes to edit, RIP me. This episode, we're talking about Beck and Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, both published by Kodansha. The songs you heard at the beginning of the episode were "Hit in the USA" by Beat Crusaders, "Brainstorm" by Beck, and "Moon on the Water" by Koyuki and Maho, the latter two from the Beck dub and the former is the opening to the anime. | The Prince in His Dark Days / Kimetsu no Yaiba | 18 Apr 2019 | 00:26:04
As I edit this episode, the White Sox are playing the Orioles, and it really feels like some terrible exercise in futility to root for either of these teams to win. Also I delayed on editing this long enough that I could use the actual Kimetsu no Yaiba OP! Hooray? This episode, we're talking about Hico Yamanaka's The Prince in His Dark Days published by Kodansha and Koyoharu Gotōge's Kimetsu no Yaiba published by Viz. The songs you heard in this episode are "Gurenge" (Red Lotus) by LiSA and "from the edge" by FictionJunction feat. LiSA both from the Kimetsu no Yaiba anime. | Mushishi / Land of the Lustrous | 18 Apr 2019 | 00:29:41
As I get back to posting episodes, I can get back to randomly rambling on these posts, which I've honestly missed. I don't know who reads this or who cares, but here I am, rambling about Eloy Jimenez hitting below expectations and having bad defense. White Sox baseball looks up. This episode, we're talking about Yuki Urushibara's Mushishi and Haruko Ichikawa's Land of the Lustrous, both published by Kodansha. I said Land of the Lustrous was published by Yen at the beginning of the podcast, and I have no idea why, but I keep thinking that it is published by Yen even though it's not. I regret this error. The songs your heard in the episode (in order) are: "The Sore Feet Song" by Ally Kerr from the Mushishi anime, "Kyoumen no Nami" by YURiKA from the Land of the Lustrous anime, and "Fude no Umi" by Masuda Toshio also from the Mushishi anime. As always, you can find me on Twitter @ImpassionateK, and my co-hosts Helen (@WanderinDreamr) and Apryll (@manjiorin) on Twitter at those places in the parenthesis. | Top Manga of 2018 | 18 Apr 2019 | 00:33:44
We're back after a long absence. It feels like it's been forever, but also no time at all because I've just been recording along while the website was in stasis the whole time. Got a bit of a somewhat dated backlog to start off with, but after that, it's content as usual! This episode, we're just talking about our favorite manga of 2018! That song you heard at the top of the episode was "United State of Pop 2018 (Turnin' It Up)" by DJ Earworm. It's a mashup, like this episode. As always, you can find me on Twitter @ImpassionateK, and my co-hosts Helen (@WanderinDreamr) and Apryll (@manjiorin) on Twitter at those places in the parenthesis. | Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind / Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku | 06 Dec 2018
The hot stove, just before the winter meetings, is not something that should be touched. Paul Goldschmidt to the Cardinals? Nathan Eovaldi back with the Red Sox? Manny Machado and Bryce Harper to the White Sox??? I can only dream... But the first two definitely happened. I live off these rumors. This episode, we're talking about Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind published by Viz and Fujita's Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku published by Kodansha. The song you heard at the top of the episode was "Fiction" by sumika from the Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku anime. | the gods lie. / Satoko and Nada | 19 Nov 2018
I had a whole thing written, but then I accidentally closed the tab before saving anything and lost it all, whoops. Anyway, the Bears are good, Iowa State football and basketball seem to be good, and the White Sox should do anything interesting this offseason. This episode, we're talking about Kaori Ozaki's the gods lie. published by Vertical and Yupechika's Satoko and Nada published by Seven Seas. That song you heard at the top of the episode is "Raingurl" by Yaeji. | Tokyo ESP / My Brother’s Husband | 02 Nov 2018
Baseball season is over, the Dodgers suffered a heartbreaking "gentleman's sweep" (sort of, but not really, an 18-inning marathon can basically be won by anyone on luck. more than usual!), and the offseason has already started. I can't wait for the winter meetings. Rick Hahn, please do something. This episode, we're talking about Hajime Segawa's Tokyo ESP published by Vertical Comics and Gengoroh Tagame's My Brother's Husband published by Pantheon Books. The song you heard at the top of the episode was "Guze Άργυρóϛ" (救世Άργυρóϛ; Silver Salvation) by Yousei Teikoku from the Tokyo ESP anime. | Legend of Chun Hyang / Kaiju Girl Caramelise | 24 Apr 2025
The White Sox are already running into random wins that didn't seem to happen in 2024, so we're well on our way to a normal extremely bad season instead of historically extremely bad season. This episode, we're talking about CLAMP's Legend of Chun Hyang published by Tokyopop and Spica Aoki's Kaiju Girl Caramelise published by Yen Press. Legend of Chun Hyang credits:

I did not get this episode out before the anime aired, but that's ok! The manga still exists, and is probably better than the anime because it isn't on HIDIVE. This episode, we're talking about Yumi Unita's Bunny Drop published by Yen Press and Nio Nakatani's Bloom Into You published by Seven Seas. | The Voynich Hotel | 16 Sep 2018
The White Sox could avoid 100 losses this year, so some things are good. This episode, we're doing a special episode on Douman Seiman's The Voynich Hotel published by Seven Seas. It is a manga I do not think my regular podcast co-hosts would enjoy. So I bring on some good friends instead. The song you heard at the top of the episode is "Mayor Bloomberg (Giant Margaritas)" by Awkwafina. This episode, we're talking about Shigeru Mizuki's Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths published by Drawn and Quarterly and Akiko Higashimura's Tokyo Tarareba Girls published by Kodansha. Grant, as you may know, is tweeting two tweets per chapter in this thread, and it's fascinating watching it unfold. This episode, we're talking about Hokusei Katsushika, Takashi Nagasaki, and Naoki Urasawa's Master Keaton published by Viz and Ryoko Ikeda's Claudine published by Seven Seas. The song you heard at the top of the episode was the opening theme from the Master Keaton anime I think? | Heart of Thomas / Go for It, Nakamura! | 27 Jul 2018
I went to my only White Sox game of the year, since I moved to LA and they only play in Angel Stadium within reasonable distance now. I didn't realize how nice it was to have Kauffman Stadium, Target Field, and Guaranteed Rate Field all within six hours of each other until moving away. But on the flip side, it's way less humid here, and thus usually more livable even at disgustingly high temperatures. This episode, we're talking about Moto Hagio's Heart of Thomas published by Fantagraphics and Syundei's Go for It, Nakamura! published by Seven Seas. The song you heard at the top of the episode is "Who We Are" by A.W. | The Trials and Tribulations of My Next Life as a Noblewoman | 01 Apr 2025
Helen here folks, I know Kory normally starts off the episode notes with something sports related so uhhh…. I saw that the 2025 “City Connect” designs were unveiled recently, and the DC ones look pretty; I might need to buy one of the hats to add to my collection of “cherry blossom themed hats for DC sports teams” (especially since I lost my Caps hat in that vein last year, noooo). Now that that’s out of the way, no Kory or Apryll this time but I am joined by Justin (@kami_nomi) of The OASG, who is my cohost on the other podcast I, uh, cohost, “It’s Not My Fault The OASG Podcast Is Not Popular!” We’re talking about the J-Novel Club (Heart imprint) release of Trials and Tribulations of My Next Life as a Noblewoman, which is a big and plot heavy series so we have both a spoiler-free section and then a spoiler-filled section about why the nickname “josei Game of Thrones” is VERY accurate for this series! I just watched the White Sox give up three runs on two wild pitches and a walk, but Korea still beat Germany in the group stage of the World Cup and that can never be taken away from me. This episode, Patz and I are talking about Kohei Horikoshi's My Hero Academia published by Viz Media. Unlike usual episodes, Patz and I just dug into everything up to the school festival stuff, so spoilers abound. Listen at your own risk if you aren't caught up! It's World Cup time, and I'll be watching a few matches contemplating the sheer horror and corruption that FIFA and Russia are while cheering for my beloved country of origin, the Republic of Korea (colloquially South Korea). They will be utterly destroyed by Mexico and Germany, and it will hurt my very soul. At least there's still LAFC and baseball. This episode, we're talking about Seimu Yoshizaki's Kingyo Used Books published by Viz Media and Natsume Ono's ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Department published by Yen Press.
