Hanging out with Jacob  @construct3d  talking all about the latest firmware update from  @BambuLab , its implications for users, as well as its implications for businesses! This latest update bricks users' ability to choose which slicer they want without using a new software from Bambu, further making it more difficult to use something other than Bambu Studio, with many users preferring  @OrcaSlicer  from  @softfever5570  to Bambu Studio, this is a major blow and really restricts one's right to choose. With the previous episode talking all about best printers for beginners, let's discuss the differences for a business. Is it good to get a cheap Ender 3? (no) but where does that value line get drawn here between part cost, reliability, warranty, customer service, and more. A business has different needs than a consumer and they can't just fumble around waiting for parts to arrive or tuning settings for weeks, for a small business, it just needs to work..

The CR-10 and it's variants

The @Elegoo Official Netpune 3 and 3 Pro

What features we like in them all, how they price out, and why you may choose one over another

Let's talk with an expert all about these things, how we can work at potentially mitigating them and how they really can make or break your business.

Some about Nick:

Nick Angers attended and graduated Drexel University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology. From there he attended Temple University and graduated with a Master’s of Education in Counseling Psychology. In the decades since, Nick has spent time in a variety of roles within therapeutic settings, ranging from marital and couples work to systemic work with families and at-risk youth. More recently, Nick has focused on work within the child abuse and neglect domain, with focus on adult substance use and trauma treatment.

How to build a TEAM with Sarah Goehrke! - Making Awesome S2E5105 Sep 202202:22:20

We are joined this week by a previous guest, Sarah Goehrke to talk all about workforce development. She has a diverse background in multiple companies across the 3D Printing industry with a gamut of specialties, including Workforce Development. Let's face it. YOU CANNOT DO EVERYTHING YOURSELF, but growing, or even starting to build a team is TOUGH because no one will love your business like you. Sarah will talk all about how to build that team, how to train them properly, and ensure you only keep the best of the best of the best, sir (or ma'am in this case.. its a MIB reference..)

Some info about Sarah: Leadership evolution has seen me grow from the Editor-in-Chief of http://3DPrint.com (2015-2018) to the Founder of Additive Integrity LLC (est. 2018) and Managing Editor of Fabbaloo (2018-2021) to going directly into the industry as the Senior Director, Strategic Communications and Ecosystems at Nexa3D (2021-2022). Since it was established in 2018, I have been on the Board of Directors of Women in 3D Printing, and in 2021 established the group's diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programming to extend the organizational focus to foster an AM industry more reflective of the world in which it operates. I am also a member of the Additive Manufacturing Coalition's first Board of Advisors (from 2022) and led Nexa3D's relationships with the AMGTA (from 2021) and ForestNation (from 2022).

I bring a diverse background in manufacturing, editing, research and analysis, management, and the creative arts to bear in developing strategic approaches, building team strengths, and creating relatable technical strategies and content. A background in theatre informs my flexible and comfortable approach to the world -- and explains why the stage is a second home.

I have keynoted from Ohio to Taiwan, spoken on panels from Boston to Frankfurt, and hosted events from LA to Nottingham. Speaking on topics from workforce development and DEI to the progression of 3D printing to a production-ready solution, I adore opportunities to speak and connect to audiences of all backgrounds and sizes, from board rooms and investors to students and PhDs.

I consistently seek to dive deep to the heart of industrial 3D printing to understand both technology and workforce. I am also an outspoken advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace. Shatter that glass ceiling, lead by example.

How to Review PROFESSIONALLY with Denise Bertacchi!!! - Making Awesome S2E4708 Aug 202201:45:52

This week we are joined by Denise Bertacchi, a professional 3D printer Reviewer for  @Tom's Hardware . Denise has looked at and reviewed tons of machines in her days there, but that is not where her skills stop! She is neither an engineer nor a professional graphic designer so she approaches 3D Printing from the vantage point of a pure hobbyist.

Denise is a 3D printer reviewer for Tom’s Hardware, but before that she was just a blogger who discovered the joy of making tiny plastic dumpster fires for all her friends. She has a fledgling 3d printing blog, https://stldenise3d.com, and a 10-year-old mom blog, https://stlMotherhood.com. She’s been a stringer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, a columnist for St. Louis Magazine and a reporter for a now gutted hyperlocal news site, https://Patch.com

Selling more games than MONOPOLY with Ken Johnson!!! - Making Awesome S2E4601 Aug 202201:40:04

This week we are joined by THE INVENTOR OF THE SECOND BEST SELLING CARD GAME IN THE WORLD, Phase 10, Ken Johnson. Ken is the epitome of the American Dream, however it was not always easy and success is NEVER guaranteed. We are going to talk about success, failure, and how the decision that Ken made has resulted in Phase 10 celebrating 40 YEARS in 2022!

Ken's big success came in 1982 when he set out to design a new card game. Upon seeing the success of Uno, he wanted to design a card game that could achieve similar success. After just a couple of days sequestered in his apartment, he came up with the Phase 10 card game. His first customers included K-Mart and Meijer stores.

In 1987 Ken licensed the manufacturing and distribution rights of Phase 10 and began receiving royalties from the worldwide sales. Phase 10 is now licensed and produced by Mattel, the largest toy company in the world, with worldwide sales of over 4 million games per year.

Phase 10 is sold in over 30 countries and is the 2nd best selling card game in the world. In the summer of 2022, Ken will celebrate Phase 10's 40th Anniversary!

In 2012, Ken was nominated for a TAGIE award – the Oscar of the Toy and Game industry.

Ken lives in Southeast Michigan with his wife of 26 years and their 15 year old son. Ken currently owns a number of other businesses. Ken has been a guest speaker at inventor clubs, universities, civic organizations and other institutions across the country, and provides support and resources for inventors, entrepreneurs, and youth organizations.

Ken is also an author, you can find his book here: https://amzn.to/3OyrWY7

AI Print Fail Detection with 3D Que!! - Making Awesome S2E4312 Jul 202202:02:08

This week we are joined by Steph, Mateo, and Steven, some of the awesome people from  @3DQue – Automated 3D Printing & AI ! They are responsible for not only the AWESOME AI Fail Detection QuinlyVision, but also The Quinly system for automated printing. Yes, it not only starts prints on it's own but also clears the beds after the print and starts again! Excited to talk to the team all about what it takes to make these awesome products!

Check them out here: https://www.3dque.com/

Steph Sharp, co-founder & CEO

Steph Sharp is an award winning finance expert and entrepreneur with over 30 years experience in manufacturing and technology.

She has a passion for innovation and believes automation is the key to unlocking people’s true potential by freeing them from mundane and mindless microtasks. Under her leadership, Quinly has become the fastest growing technology in 3D printing automation, delivering more than 2 million prints in over 20 countries.

When she’s not working or on Discord talking to the automated printing community, you will find her hanging out with friends and family or out enjoying West Coast Swing dancing.

Mateo Pekic, co-founder & COI

A serial innovator, Mateo has developed multiple automation solutions to relieve innovators from the endlessly tedious tasks involved in 3D printing.

His journey started with the invention of the VAAPR™️ print bed, the only self-releasing print bed formulated for automation. He then developed Quinly automation for the most popular 3D printers. Quinly is now the busiest 3D printer operator in the world, delivering more than 2 million prints worldwide. His next goal is to automate all 3D printers and 3D print farms with the rollout of AutoPrint3D and AutoFarm3D.

When he’s not working on Quinly, you can find Mateo hiking with friends, walking Carbon (his Puli dog), or geeking out over custom keyboards.

Steven McCulloch, Quinly Product Lead

Steven is at the leading edge of 3D printing design and operation. In addition to developing and testing all of 3DQue’s technology, he runs production and in his spare time delves into the world of non-planar printing to create cool new designs.

Most recently, he’s enjoyed creating 3D prints that intentionally fail to show off the capabilities of QuinlyVision, the next generation of 3D print failure detection.

When he’s not in the office or posting cool 3D prints on Instagram (layershift3d), he’s out with friends, playing drums with his bandmates, or working on improving his bouldering skills.

Mental Health in Small Business with Johnny Crowder of Cope Notes - Making Awesome S2E3624 May 202200:54:02

This week we are joined by a good friend of mine, Johnny Crowder. This episode is a bit deep, but really valuable to hear. Please give it a listen. Johnny Crowder is a 29-year-old suicide/abuse survivor, TEDx speaker, touring musician, mental health and sobriety advocate, and the Founder & CEO of Cope Notes, a text-based mental health platform that provides daily support to users in nearly 100 countries around the world.

But in the years leading up to these incredible leaps in advocacy, every day was a battle against schizophrenic hallucinations and suicidal ideation. After a lifetime of resisting professional care and shying away from sharing his story, Johnny’s curiosity flowered, and the healing slowly began.

Armed with 10 years of clinical treatment, a psychology degree from the University of Central Florida, and a decade of peer support and public advocacy through the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Johnny’s youthful vigor for mental health has impacted millions of lives across the globe.

Since his first keynote in 2011, Johnny's refreshingly vulnerable and candid perspective has attracted praise from hundreds of outlets, including Upworthy, CNN, and Forbes.

Even when commanding a virtual stage or touring with his metal band, Prison, his infectious positivity and firsthand experience with multiple mental illnesses (ranging from bipolar disorder and PTSD to OCD and beyond) uniquely equip him to provide realistic, yet hopeful insight into the pains of hardship with authenticity, levity, and unconventional wit.

Product Development and Game Design with Deedre Daniel!!!- Making Awesome S2E3516 May 202201:46:59

This week we are joined by Deedre Daniel. She is a game designer that I have known for a few years and now with her game being on Amazon and selling all over, I figured it would be a great time to have her on to talk about her story!

Deedre is the founder of The Big Fat Tip, 501(c)(3), and The Interesting Conversations Company®. Her mission is to help people think creatively, LAUGH, and build stronger bonds with others. Before starting these businesses, she spent nearly two decades at GEICO, where she rose through the ranks from call center sales associate to head of the Affinity Marketing division. Her division was responsible for the relationship management of 800 corporate partners. For 11 years, the primary function of her job was a paid professional schmoozer - attending multiple networking events nearly every week for those organizations. After a decade of turning boring conversations into memorable ones, Deedre was inspired to create a keynote and training course called, How to be More Interesting Than a Cell Phone®. She invented The Very Interesting Game™, which she turned into an online game show when COVID-19 demolished her newly-launched speaking business. Every week, she writes new game cards for virtual game shows, has a book coming out this year, an app in development, and a new “Very Interesting Person” certificate program rolling out soon. She doesn't like it when people like their fingers to hand her a piece of paper, and she also doesn't like listening to air whistle through dense nose hair. Her husband, Rob, and their dog, Spartacus live in Lakeland, Florida.

Dan of Slice Engineering!- Making Awesome S2E3118 Apr 202200:58:33

This week we are joined by Dan Barousse, Co-Founder and CEO of  @Slice Engineering . Dan is a mechanical engineer that was turned to the Dark Side of Business, i.e. sales and marketing, when he started Slice Engineering. He is passionate about using 3D printing as a tool to help people bring their ideas to life.

We are going to be discussing the history of Slice Engineering, what sets them apart, and maybe some fun beef with E3D ;)

Slice's Story:

When it comes down to it, we’re engineers. And when we encounter a problem, it’s compulsive for us to find a solution, or create one. We look to the greatest inventors in history and we see a shared vision: a contagious curiosity about how things work, and an insatiable desire to improve the world.

That curiosity inspires us - a vision to push technology forward further than people thought was possible. One of the great architects, Louis Sullivan, had a philosophy that has permeated design, engineering, and architecture: form ever follows function. Within the context of architecture, it means that the shape of a building should primarily relate to its intended function or purpose. It’s simple, but profound. And that philosophy led us to re-imagine some of the components on the 3D desktop printer we were using at the time. Were they optimally designed and structured based on their intended function? We told you it’s compulsive...That lens to life has unlocked engineering discoveries that led to the formation of Slice Engineering®. Because of these discoveries, you can now print faster, with higher resolution, using engineering-grade plastics.

Do you have a pitch deck, do you know what one is, and do you know the basics of a good pitch? If you answered no to any of those questions, this is a podcast you do not want to miss! Defender of the lunch hour, the story of how LunchPool survived the pandemic is a bit crazy, this one will be heavy, but worth it!

Alex Abell is the CEO of Lunchpool, a social networking company that he founded in 2019. Under his leadership, Lunchpool has grown to a million dollar enterprise. Alex is also a father - to a 4 year old firecracker named Avie. He's an avid tinkerer, always looking for ways to improve the world through innovation.

Boris Garbe, the man behind Mills Gallery - Making Awesome S2E2903 Apr 202201:43:43

This week we are joined by Boris Garbe, a former teacher of Grant's that has gone on to inspire thousands via the Mills Gallery here in Central Florida. Boris has a no BS attitude about art, stating that he does not give a sh!t about the art, but cares only about the artist, and well, that resonates with us. Each project that comes through 3DM has it's story which is greater than the sum of it's parts. We will be talking all about his history, what it took to open an art gallery, and how this ideology of "people over products" has made him so successful.

A bit about Boris:

In 2016, after 15 years as a Spanish and sign language teacher, I decided to join the Orlando arts scene by opening an art space called Mills Gallery.

At that point in my life, I knew very little about art. I decided to remain honest about that and surround myself with a team of experts who would guide and advise me at every turn. Gallerist Lael Dewahl showed me the ropes about how to run a gallery, and designer and artist Victor Bokas designed the logo as well as the official look for the gallery. I worked with local filmmaker Marvin Welch to create a series of films that introduced my gallery to Orlando and showed them what my overall goal was.

My wish was to create a gallery that was attractive to young people, as well as a place that was available to and representative of all artists, regardless of their sex or gender. Mills Gallery became a pioneer project for gender equality in the Orlando arts, and we strive to exhibit an equal amount of female and male artists annually.

In 2019, I decided to bring curator Kyle Eagle on board on a permanent basis. Eagle is one of the important movers and shakers in the Orlando area, and already within a short year Mills Gallery has soared to new heights. As of 2020, we have turned Mills Gallery into two galleries, with the second one, LUMP Gallery, named after the fat little dachshund that was the gallery’s mascot until his passing in August of 2019.

Starting in 2017 I also branched out in other areas of the entertainment world. I, along with my co-host, the artist Marla E, host a web series called KISS MY ART. Marla and I had a podcast called LIVE ARTS that ran for two years as well as a radio segment on the Connections show on IHeart radio. Starting in 2019, Marla and I started doing a live version of our web series at the renowned MAXINE’s ON SHINE restaurant in Orlando.

In late 2019 Kyle Eagle and I began production of a podcast called THE EXPERIENCE WITH CHRIS FIO starring break-out local talent Chris Fioravantti. The podcast premiered in February 2020 with some of the highest ratings ever experienced by its distributing company PFT Media.

Shark Tank and Licensing Inventions with Lisa Lloyd! - Making Awesome S2E2720 Mar 202201:40:54

This week we are joined by Lisa Lloyd, an award winning inventor and someone who made a DEAL with SHARK TANK's Daymond John! Check out her channel  @icaninvent !

Lisa’s success began with her idea for a barrette. While working for the CBS affiliate in Tucson, AZ she often wore her hair up in a French Twist. Friends and co-workers regularly asked how she fashioned the professional up-do so she began to scour stores to find a barrette that would help. When she discovered there was nothing on the market she decided to invent one. A short thirteen months later she had patented, manufactured, sold to stores and ultimately licensed the patent to Scunci® for 20 years of regular income. The product is now sold in stores around the world and has generated over $20M globally!

Since then Lisa has licensed 6 more products to major distributors including Goody Products®, Scunci®. and Helen of Troy®. In 2007 Lisa in-licensed a patent from an inventor and took on the challenge to further develop, patent, manufacture and launch a new line of plush products called TC Pets for which she has won numerous awards and been featured on the ABC reality show Shark Tank where she won the coveted investment of “Shark” Daymond John of FUBU.

Additionally Lisa is the co-founder of the Inventor’s Association of Arizona and has been a consultant for hundreds of small businesses and startups as the Entrepreneur-in-Residence for several Accelerators and as an Academic Advisor for the Venture Devil Program at ASU. She has also been contracted by major corporations like InventHelp®, Scunci® and Newell Rubbermaid® to help develop their innovation infrastructure and licensing best practices. Her experience includes Director of Business Development for Early Stage East. ESE is a series of Delaware venture conferences specializing in early stage VC for High-Tech and Biotech companies.

Lisa has spent nearly two decades as a speaker and trainer on the subjects of innovation, licensing and business development. She has been a featured lecturer at Universities including the U of A Eller School of Business and Entrepreneurship, ASU College of Engineering, and the Arizona Intellectual Property Association's continuing education program. She’s also won numerous awards for pitch competitions including Rice University’s “Alliance Business Plan Pitch Competition” and “Pitch it to the Pros” with Discovery Channel’s Billy Mayes.

Lisa is a forward thinker, voracious learner and always looking for new ways to add value for entrepreneurs and innovators. Her program, The Invention Accelerator helps independent inventors build successful licensing businesses. Go to: https://theinventionaccelerator.com for more information.

Peter Solomon and Wham Bam Systems! - Making Awesome S2E2320 Feb 202202:41:06

This week we are joined by Peter Solomon, an amazing designer and FOUNDER of Wham Bam Systems, a 3D Printer accessory company most famous for their Flexible Build Systems and the MUTANT tool changing set up! Peter is going to talk all about his life, starting Wham Bam, and even show us around their NEW FACILITY! Below is Peter's bio and links to Wham Bam!

https://whambamsystems.com/        Use code "Musketeers" for 10% off!!!

Peter Solomon is an acclaimed industrial designer, problem solver, and entrepreneur.

Peter did his undergraduate degree in industrial design at Pratt, NY in the 1980s, worked for a period there after in NY, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Peter’s journey as a designer began before the true adoption of computers and 3D programs, and he was active in their implementation and the advent of 3D printers from the beginning.

As printers became more and more accessible Peter ran labs of multiple machines, each over $200k, and in 2014 bought a few more consumer facing machines for less than $10k each.

Peter participated in testing new printer technology, working with 3D software firms on beta versions and improvements, and continually contributed to forums with his knowledge, advice and upgrades for various machines.

When the advent of the RepRap movement provided the community as well as Chinese manufacturer with inexpensive solutions to creating machines, the market shifted dramatically.  The forums began to have discussions held by hobbyists and beginners rather than prototypers, designers, and engineers. Peter bought one then two, three Creality FDM printers and was blown away by the low price but great quality of prints with a bit of tuning and upgrades, and began making and sharing his own.  In 2017 he began working on a way to have better adhesion but remove prints easier, and sharing his results with the community provoked many requests to offer the complete product instead of the plans.

In 2018 Peter together with his Asian Production Partner Steven, and Marketing Director Melinda decided to open Wham Bam, and ran a kick starter campaign with 6 sizes of Flexible Build System.

Today Wham Bam is going on its 4th year, has moved into a larger space with warehousing, has multiple distributors all over the world and has over 300 SKUS.

During COVID’s early spread Peter also founded Egis Viso to make superior face-shields and get them out to healthcare professionals and front liners.

in 2020 he also established an association for professionals in Rapid Manufacture.
