Yve Blake (she/her) Book, Music & Lyrics

Yve Blake is a playwright, screenwriter, and songwriter, born and raised on Gadigal land.

She's best known for writing the Book, Music and Lyrics for the musical FANGIRLS, which has been awarded the 2019 Sydney Theatre Award for Best Mainstage Musical, 2019 Matilda Award for Best Musical or Cabaret, 2020 AWGIE award for Music Theatre, 2021 Green Room award for New Australian Writing for Musical Theatre, and also scored an ARIA nomination for Best Original Soundtrack or Musical Theatre Cast Album. After premiering at Belvoir and Queensland Theatre in 2019, FANGIRLS returned in 2021 for a national tour, and returned by demand in 2022 at the Sydney Opera House. In 2024, FANGIRLS will premiere in the UK at the Lyric Hammersmith, produced by Lyric Hammersmith and Sonia Friedman Productions, directed by Paige Rattray.

Yve is an alumni of the Royal Court Writers’ Programme, and was the inaugural recipient of the ATYP Rebel Wilson Theatre-maker scholarship. She is also a 2024 Women in Music Australia Soho House Fellow, and has been a visiting artist at Princeton University. She's also developed and presented her own work in London at Soho Theatre, Southbank Centre, Old Vic New Voices, the National Theatre Studio and The Barbican. Her 2019 TEDxSydney talk about Fangirls has been promoted to an official TED talk on TED.com, where it has been viewed more than 1.4 million times.

She is currently developing a screen adaptation of Fangirls with Fremantle, a movie musical for Mark Gordon Pictures, a new spooky musical, and various other projects. For more info, head to yveblake.co

Inspired by Sir Thomas Malory’s 15th-century prose Le Morte D’Arthur, Avalon follows the classic tale of the tragic destiny of soon-to-be King Arthur and his half-sister Morgan, through the lens of our wizardly narrator, Merlin.

After the death of King Uther, the knights and nobleman of the land devise a plan to fill the power vacuum left in his stead. They agree that whoever wields the power to pull the late king’s sword, “Excalibur”, from a stone, shall be their new leader. The ever-ignored daughter of the king, Morgan, finally sees her chance to earn respect from her kingdom and dreams of filling her father’s shoes.

Meanwhile, Arthur, a humble young man from the country, journeys to the kingdom to assist his older brother in a royal tournament. Unbeknownst to him, Arthur is King Uther’s only male heir. In a twist of fate, or predetermined act of destiny, Arthur miraculously pulls Excalibur from the stone. The siblings realize that their destiny is weaved together like a tapestry, and both become determined to protect their future at all costs.

A one-woman musical about the highs and lows of a life devoted to creating art. Our story follows Marie-Berthe Cazin, a Parisian ceramist in her mid 40s, as she prepares her house for the visit of Henrietta Tirman; renowned artist and her estranged best friend. As she does so, she begins to reminisce, and dream about what could have been.

Rebecca holds a master’s degree in musical theatre composition from Goldsmiths, University of London, is a Selladoor New Writers Programme alumni and a part of the Book, Music & Lyrics Advance Group. She has previously directed and produced a number of Edinburgh fringe productions with Bedlam Theatre, EUSOG & For the Fans Productions and is currently developing a new show, “The Sesh” with writer and composer Rob Gathercole. @beccalouisesimmonds

Past and present intertwine in this new folk musical about the history, bravery, and sacrifices of our lifeboat communities. Witnesses to a tragedy in 1886, Charles and Marion Macara unite to support a town in grief, inspiring a nationwide movement set to forever change the tide of fundraising. Current day crew member, Shannon, balances her new family responsibilities with an inherited sense of duty to honour the legacy of family members past. In two hundred years, the same question remains - how far will you go to save a stranger?

Jon Hare (he/him) Writer & Composer

Jon's other musicals include Never Again, inspired by true events from WWI, and Charming, an 80s jukebox show set in a bankrupt kingdom 25 years after the failed marriage of Prince Charming and Cinderella. In 2021 he recorded a demo album for his Christmas family musical, The First Chris Moose, at Queen's Theatre, Hornchurch, with MD Dan Glover. Jon has been a freelance Production and Stage Manager for over fifteen years, working at National Theatre, Young Vic, Roundhouse, Windsor Castle, and others. He also works as a freelance consultant to international lyricists, specialising in helping those for whom English is not their first language. @horatiohare

Alice Haywood is a woman in her 70s who, despite growing up as an incredibly accomplished pianist and moving from Australia to London to study, found herself in an abusive and controlling marriage, unable to exercise any control over her own life. Now, with the recent death of her husband, and through a friendship with her younger neighbour, Emily, Alice refinds her purpose, and goes on a journey to rediscover herself. At the end of the play, Alice finally exorcises the ghost of her husband Edward, when she takes an axe to the grand piano he bought for her 40 years ago.

Tim Gilvin is a composer lyricist whose projects include Stay Awake, Jake (S&S Award Winner 2014; VAULT Festival 2016; Southwark Playhouse 2020), Unfortunate (Edinburgh 2019; London 2022) and Help! Elliot Clay is a composer, lyricist and actor. His debut musical MILLENNIALS premiered at The Other Palace in summer 2022 and was nominated for the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Off-West End Production. It is regularly played on Elaine Paige’s BBC Radio 2 programme and has twice been featured at West End Live in Trafalgar Square. As an actor he's played leading roles in the West End and internationally in The Mousetrap and Million Dollar Quartet. @elliotjclay

Hayley Doyle (she/her) Book

Born in Liverpool, Hayley made her West End debut in Mamma Mia! A short contract in Dubai turned into 7 years, where she launched her own theatre school, Hayley's Comet, and became a radio presenter on Dubai Eye. She landed a two-book deal with HarperCollins UK and her debut novel Never Saw You Coming was longlisted for The Guardian Not the Booker prize 2020. With a blistering pop rock score, this brand new British musical follows nine students as they discover that becoming a parent means changing more than just nappies. Separately, Martha was the Associate Director for Olivier-nominated play, The Shark Is Broken which is currently running on Broadway. Based on the true story of George Mallory and his quest to conquer Mount Everest. Though lost to the mountain forever in 1924, later discoveries reignited the possibility that George may have succeeded after all - including a missing photo of his wife that he’d promised to leave at the top. From the north-west of England, to the heights of the Himalayas, Mallory On The Mountain follows George through a life of daring adventure.

Long before Peter Pan, the Lost Boys, Hook and Wendy, Tinker Bell had a story of her own. Tinker Bell has fled Neverland which has been taken over by Hook and his Pirates and seeks refuge with the Kensington Garden Fairies, but new threats await her in this new world and Tinker Bell must use her talents to save her friends and find her way back home.

As a writing duo, Carey-Hills & Hendricks wrote ’”Nursery Crimes” back in 2009 - a comedy musical which was listed by the Evening Standard as one of the Top 10 New Musicals, and reached the semi-finals of the West End Producer competition. Carey-Hills & Hendricks are also known for their political satire and comedy songs on TikTok and have provided music for various advertising campaigns.

Based on F Scott Fitzgerald's short story, this musical takes place in a sleepy fishing harbor on the north coast of Cornwall and tells the story of Benjamin Button, born as an old man in rather unusual circumstances. The story of this show reverberates around the singular message that we should make the most of the time given to us.

Jethro Compton (he/him) Book & Lyrics

Jethro is a Cornish writer, director and theatre producer. He began his theatre career in 2008 as the Producer and Co-Artistic Director of Belt Up Theatre, company in residence at York Theatre Royal. He worked on all Belt Up's productions between 2008 and 2012 including, The Tartuffe, The Trial, Outland, Macbeth and The Boy James. For his own company, Jethro has directed the following productions, The Bunker Trilogy and The Capone Trilogy, and his own writing, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Frontier Trilogy, Sirenia, Wolf's Blood. and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. In 2010 he was awarded a bursary from Stage One to support his development as a commercial producer. Between 2011 and 2013 he was Associate Producer of Southwark Playhouse, London. In 2016 he became an Associate Artist of Hall for Cornwall.

Darren Clark (he/him) Music & Lyrics

Darren is a composer & lyricist living in Maidstone in Kent. He has been writing musical theatre professionally for nearly 15 years. Amongst his many shows are the critically acclaimed musicals The Wicker Husband, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Day of the Living and The Coup Coup Club. 

Darren’s musical theatre writing has received numerous awards including the MTI Stiles & Drewe Mentorship Award, the PRS Open Composers Award and the Musical Theatre Executive Trust Award. Along with Rhys Jennings, his work has been selected to the NAMT Festival of New Musicals in New York, and The MTI Stiles & Drewe Mentorship Award. Four of Darren’s musical theatre projects have been featured in the UK’s premiere musical theatre festival BEAM. Darren is a passionate advocate for new musical theatre writing in the UK and is the founder of NEW UK MUSICALS, a community providing competitions, opportunities and a website which allows writers of new musical theatre to sell their songs to their fans.

An unfaithful adaptation of the Collodi classic Pinocchio with protagonist Geppetto at its heart, PIN takes a dystopian Tim Burtonesque look at a society defined by technology. With a score inspired by Little Shop of Horrors and Danny Elfman classics, PIN is a comical and heartfelt answer to our increasing isolation and a rallying cry for humanity to shine through.

Tommy Antonio is a composer, bookwriter, lyricist, and multi instrumentalist working in musical theatre, film, and as a recording artist. He trained at Guildhall School Of Music and Drama. Tommy records as Shaker Neon with long time collaborator Dom James, and as Tenderland as a solo artist and producer. He is under commission by Roald Dahl Story Company to adapt one of their most beloved titles into a stage musical. PIN is Tommy’s first musical as bookwriter/lyricist.

Marc Teiler (he/him) Composer

Marc Teitler is an award-winning composer who works across contemporary dance, theatre and film. Recipient of the Guardian Innovation Award, Marc is the co-creator of the West End musical The Grinning Man which opened at the Bristol Old Vic and transferred to the West End’s Trafalgar Studios. Most recently, Marc created The Magician’s Elephant with Nancy Harris for the Royal Shakespeare Company which has its US premiere in 2024. Marc’s previous musicals with Nancy include The Red Shoes at the Gate, Dublin and Baddies at the Unicorn Theatre. Marc’s scores for plays include Dance Nation at the Almeida, Blood & Gifts at the National Theatre and The Secret Agent at the Young Vic. Marc is currently working on a sci-fi musical called Rescue Fantasy with Phil Porter.

Natalie Abrahami (she/her) Director

Natalie Abrahami is a theatre, opera and film director. Previous work includes: The Trials (Donmar Warehouse); Rusalka (Royal Opera House); Swive [Elizabeth] (Shakespeare’s Globe), and ANNA (National Theatre). Natalie was Artistic Director of the Gate Theatre, Notting Hill with Carrie Cracknell 2007-2012. Natalie went on to become an Associate Director at the Young Vic where she directed Juliet Stevenson in Happy Days and Wings, George Mackay in Ah, Wilderness! and Natalie Dormer in After Miss Julie. Other theatre and opera include: The Meeting (Chichester Festival Theatre), Machinal (Almeida), Queen Anne (Royal Shakespeare Company and Theatre Royal Haymarket); How the Whale Became and Other Tales (Linbury Studio, Royal Opera House).

Michaela Betts (she/her) Music & Lyrics

Michaela’s dramatic and haunting cinematic folk music has emerged from years of songwriting, theatre work, and perfecting her sound as a session singer and pianist. As well as recording two albums with art-pop band Theghostorchestra, she was the main vocalist on the feature film Slipstream and once taught Gina McKee to play the piano for BBC drama Mothertime. Born in Antwerp, and raised in a rambling house in Yorkshire, Michaela was the daughter of travelling folk musicians. Her father David F Betts was a singer/songwriter and TV composer while her Swedish mother’s stepdad was the writer Bengt Nerman, and his father the journalist Ture Nerman, a famous Swedish socialist who met Lenin in 1917. @mikbetts

Bea Holland (she/her) Book 

Bea is a theatre-maker, performer and writer. She studied English and Drama at The University of Hull and is an associate of National Youth Theatre. She has worked at theatres across the country including: Barbican, Unicorn Theatre, Orange Tree, National Theatre, Lowry, Battersea Arts Centre and Almeida. Her work spans from stand-up comedy at the Edin Fringe to Greek Tragedy on The Southbank and from puppeteering a mouse circus at Glastonbury to writing comedy for E4. Bea is a core member of The PappyShow team. She has performed in GIRLS, was an associate director on BOYS and facilitates workshops for The PappyShow. Most recently, she appeared in Mike Shepherd's CALVINO NIGHTS at the Minack Theatre, Cornwall. @hellobeaholland

Train on Fire is a story about feminism's legacy, told through the lens of a woman erased from history. Kitty Marion, the woman in question, was a singer-turned suffragette at the height of the women's suffrage movement in 1900s London. Every actor in the show shares the role of Marion, passing the legacy (and the burden of it) between each other. We follow her path to radicalisation, and see just how far a woman will go to get her name in the history books.

Ellie is a London-based director, dramaturg, writer and lyricist, specialising in new musical theatre. Most recently, she directed the world premiere of 42 Balloons by Jack Godfrey at the Vaudeville Theatre in the West End. Other theatre includes: This Is A Love Story (book/additional lyrics, Dundee Rep), Mario: A Super Musical (director, Cockpit Theatre/Union Theatre), Bluff (director, for radio), Catch Me/The Limit (co-director, Central School of Speech and Drama), Andromeda Unchained (book/lyrics, The Ceiling Project) and Busk (director/dramaturg, Dare Festival). Kurt may find that music holds the key as our band ‘The Fates’ plead with him on a melodic journey through his life. Arriving at a junction in time, Kurt confronts the fray in the thread of his very existence. Earth to Kurt is a moving and surprising look at the journey to the afterlife and the stories and people we leave behind.

George Clark (he/him) Writer / Composer / Musical Director 

George managed family and studies as a young working-class dad on the BA Acting & Contemporary Theatre course. Having his little boy at 21, he learned what life is living by re-learning how to “play” - and now that is his aphorism. George composes and writes music for theatre, musically directing & looking deeply into every word/chord/beat/sound everything made is expertly performed. He has continued as a singer-songwriter under the guise of JEEBOJUNK (@jeebojunk) whilst developing his creative performance/practice for the theatre world, underground he has been sculpting his music and has been heard on BBC radio, BBC Introducing and BBC Essex. George writes songs for theatre to tell compelling stories with grit and development purpose his most recent work Earth to Kurt received four & five-star reviews, sell out shows with a future created on the horizon. Ricky Hunt (he/him) Writer / Director

Ricky had an interesting journey taking him from the stage to the page. Born in London to working class parents, Ricky strives to tell poignant, purposeful stories that champion LGBTQI+ and underrepresented voices. ​Ricky made his directing debut at Vault Festival 2023 Earth to Kurt the show received three 5 star reviews and show of the week nomination.​ @rickyjhunt

Jolene Venzi (she/they) Artistic Associate / Assistant Musical Director

English-Swiss actor-musician Jolene is a theatre maker with an appetite for making catalytic yet sensitive work. Being a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, they organically found their voice with singing and songwriting. Training on the Acting and Contemporary Theatre course at East 15 combined this natural ear for music with their passion for writing, directing and devising; specifically work that explores themes of gender identity and queerness. @jolenevenzi

The Boy Who Sailed The Ocean in an Armchair written by Jordan Li-Smith, based on the novel by Lara Williamson: Becket Rumsey and his brother Billy are awoken in the middle of the night by their Dad and must leave everything behind, including their almost-mum Pearl. Whilst coming to terms with the fact that his real mum died before he had a chance to say goodbye to her too, he arms himself with an armchair of stories and one thousand paper cranes, determined to bring his family back together again.

It’s the eve of the mayoral election, and the kids of Hamelin aren’t happy. The mayor and owner of the local pie factory has imposed a music ban, and to make matters worse, there’s a serious rat problem. But, there have been whispers of a mysterious rat catcher in town. Can this curious stranger help Hamelin to find its voice once more? 

Pied Piper is a raucous musical re-imagining of a medieval fairy-tale. Featuring a hugely talented cast of beatboxers, musicians and special guest performances from the local community, get ready for an electrifying night of vocal wizardry for all the family.

Featuring songs ‘Welcome to Hamlin’ performed by the cast (Lead Rap Conrad Murray) and ‘I Wanna Sing’ performed by the cast (Lead Vocal Kate Donnachie).

Conrad Murray (he/him) Writer & Co-Director

Conrad Murray is a theatre maker, director, musician, rapper, beatboxer, writer and composer. As artistic director, he has led the BAC Beatbox Academy since 2008, innovating in hop hop/ beatbox theatre with various projects. 

His recent production Romeo & Juliet with the Polka Theatre and Beats & Elements , which he Co Directed and wrote, has been nominated for four Off West End awards including best music and production.

His production company for making new hip hop shows is called rODIUM LTD. 

He was recently the Musical Director and Composer on Michael Rosens’ An Unexpected Twist’, book by Roy Williams. 

His production with the BAC Beatbox Academy, Frankenstein: How to Make a Monster got 5 star reviews from The Stage, The Guardian and others. It won the Off West End award, Total Theatre award, and was the highest rated show of the Edinburgh Fringe, and won pick of the fringe at the Adelaide fringe festival.  It was adapted into a BBC film in 2020. Pilots’ Crongton Knights  (Musical Director was picked as one of the top theatre shows of the year by the Guardian in 2020.

He was chosen as part of the Stage’s top 100 people in their 2020 list which highlighted his show High rise State Of Mind with his theatre company Beats & Elements, and a finalist in The Arts Foundations theatre makers category. 

He was Beatbox Coach on Giles Terera’s The Meaning Of Zong  for the Bristol Old Vic. 

He was director for Connor Allen’s autobiographical Grime theatre experience Making Of A Monster for the Wales Millennium Centre. 

In 2022, his first published works were published by Bloomsbury/Methuen Drama, Making hip hop theatre and three original texts Beatbox & Elements – A Hip Hop Theatre Trilogy. 

He has collaborated and/or made work for various venues and institutions including Battersea Arts Centre, The National Theatre Studio, The Lyric Hammersmith, Mountview School of Theatre Arts, The Tate, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Camden People’s Theatre, Roundhouse, Theatre Royal Stratford East, UCL, The Courtyard Theatre.

It’s 1979 and David Starr is unquestionably one of the smartest, most talented sixth-formers in East Dulwich – he’s got a wild imagination, a vocal range to die for, and a bedroom plastered with posters of his beloved pop idols: Blondie, Sting, and Kate Bush. But being smart, talented, with a great taste in music may not be enough to get him through secondary school, where, to his great surprise, he’s just been given the female lead in the school play. The unconventional casting sends shockwaves through David’s small town, first with David, and then with his parents, his aunt, and his classmates.

Before long, it seems like everybody has an opinion on whether David should go on with the show, inspiring him to turn to his no-nonsense best friend Frances and his unlikely co-star Maxie, the enigmatic captain of the football team.

Based on the novel ‘Becoming Nancy’ by Terry Ronald.

Faced with the backdrop of the First World War, the insular residents of Bryher can no longer escape the realities of life beyond the islands. It takes the innocence of youth – in the shape of plucky young Gracie Jenkins, and her sailing companion and confidant Daniel Pender – to try to blow apart the fear and hatred that threatens to destroy their community, lifting a powerful curse in the process. Adapted from the book by Michael Morpurgo.

She has written and performed internationally for several projects including at the United Nations and HRH Queen's 90th Birthday Celebrations. Nikki Racklin (she/her) Book & Lyrics

Her commissions include Love Me To Death, an opera about Ruth Ellis, which was performed at the Barbican Pit Theatre and the Tête à Tête Opera Festival, and Deptford Wives, an adaptation of the award-winning radio play. Working alongside Ben Glasstone, Nikki is currently developing Mini: The Boy Who Played With Fire, a glam-rock-fuelled musical about Michael ‘Mini’ Cooper, and writing the lyrics to a stage-musical adaptation of Tracy-Ann Oberman’s BBC R4 drama Bette and Joan and Baby Jane, exploring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford’s deep-seated rivalry on the set of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, with music by James Cleeve. @nikkiracklin

Bethan Marlow (she/they) Book & Lyrics

Bethan Marlow is an award-winning writer from North Wales. Her highly acclaimed theatre credits include PIGEON (Theatr Iolo/Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru), MOLD RIOTS (Theatr Clwyd) and NYRSYS (Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru). Bethan’s current theatre commissions are with Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and Welsh National Opera.

Bethan is currently developing original TV drama series for Five Acts, World Productions and Film Nation. She is also working on two feel-good queer feature films: MADISON with the BFI and IEIE Productions and QUEER AS FOLK DANCING with Ffilm Cymru and Ardimages UK.

Bethan was recently selected for the Wscripted Cannes Screenplay List and BAFTA x BFI Flare mentoring scheme.

Nicola T. Chang (she/her) Music

Nicola T. Chang is a composer/sound designer who has recently worked on For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Hue Gets Too Heavy (West End/Royal Court/New Diorama) and My Neighbour Totoro (RSC/Barbican). @nicolatchang

In Redcliffe, Bristol William is feeling the pressure to find a wife whilst also being the breadwinner to his family. His mothers nagging doesn't help. When he meets Richard, he unlocks a world he had never dared to explore before and it’s clear there is no going back. Based on the true events of William Critchard and Richard Arnold in 1753, Redcliffe is an epic tale of forbidden love during the persecution people faced for hundreds of years.

His other West End credits include Strat in Bat Out Of Hell at The Dominion Theatre and JD in Heathers at Theatre Royal Haymarket. Raising Gays is an original 90-minute musical inspired by interviews with parents of queer people. In the Somerset town of Little Malden, Jenny Bennet’s world shifts when her thirty-year-old son comes out of the closet. Finding google rather lacking (absolutely terrifying), she’s determined to support him and help others, so she launches a support group for local parents also navigating their own journeys of acceptance. Told through the parents' eyes, ‘Raising Gays’ captures the struggle (and the desire) to understand from the outside. It’s a musical for anyone who’s ever had a kid (or a parent).

Micha Mirto (she/her) Book & Director

Micha Mirto is a director and writer making predominantly new work ('Plenty of vision, never a dull moment' Time for theatre). She's worked on large immersive projects with Penguin Random House, Disney and The NHS. She's the Artistic Director of Dolls In Amber - a queer female lead theatre company exploring real world issues through genre/sci-fi and spectacle on stage. Most recently DiA's play Beard was awarded funding for a two week exploratory R&D at the Arcola.
