Welcome Back to Make Mine Multiversity: A Marvel Podcast! Each episode we’ll be looking at Marvel books, old and new! We discuss fun Marvel comics, Marvel news, Marvel history and, now, are putting the "mine" back into Make Mine Multiversity. 

For those who're new, each month I talk with a guest about a Marvel comic that's memorable to them. Sometimes they're personally meaningful, sometimes it's "I read this a few months ago and its still sticking around."

This month I welcome on Colleen Venable to discuss a comic I vaguely knew existed but didn't realize how much of it there was: "Alf." From sitcom star to comics "hero," it's everyone's favorite Melman. The two issues Colleen chose were, thankfully for me, X-men related.

I'm not going to try to do any of the puns Alf is known for. I think it might do my head in.

For some bonafides, Colleen is a comics writer and former designer for First Second Books. She's written "Kiss Number 8," the "Katie the Catsitter" series and is now writing the "Junie B. Jones" adaptations with art by Honie Beam (oh hey, there's an interview about that.)

For some bonafides, Hans is an award-wining audio producer who has been working in sound, music, and audio recording for 20 years. Jesse is a teacher and he's happy that's all there is to know.

Elias has found a new pastime: griping about Dan Slott on "Spider-Man." Jaina would love to show him the good Slott books she's read. Elias caved and decided he could gripe about Slott AND read a good Slott comic by revisiting 1 of 2 arcs he's actually read: the original "Spider-Verse." Folks. If you've only seen the movies, this shit will be a wild trip. Spider-Gwen! SP//dR! Silk! The worst Silk plot point ever! Spider-Woman as a pirate? And something a little...Superior.

For those wanting Spidersman, check out "Spider-Geddon." You will be horrified but you won't be disappointed.

Kevin and guest Elias Rosner in part one tackle the debuts of new miniseries "Nebula," and "Ant-Man," as well as the launch of Al Ewing and Juann Cabal's "Guardians of the Galaxy." In part two the pair review "X-Men" #5 and #6 alongside "X-Men/Fantastic Four #1 and discuss the state of Dawn of X now that every book has a full arc behind them.

Kevin breaks down the plethora of Marvel news from the last few weeks and gets you ready for the month of April when "Children of the Atom," "Empyre," and a new "Black Widow" ongoing launches right before her solo film debut. In the back half of the episode Brian, Vince, and Zach of the DC3Cast return to give their thoughts on January 2020 Dawn of X books.

Kevin and guests Elias Rosner and Jake Hill take a look at some of Marvel's biggest news of the last week discussing the reveal of "X-Factor" from the creative team of Leah Williams and David Baldeón and all the books spinning out of "Outlawed" in March. The trio review "Iron Man 2020" #1, "Hawkeye: Freefall" #1, and "Thor" #1 in part 2 of the episode!

Kevin and guest, Multiversity Comics Manager-at-Large Jake Hill, break down Marvel's big prequel for 2020 and last big hoorah of the last decade: "Incoming!" #1. The pair discuss the issue in depth, it's implications, and what might be coming with "Empyre" in April. In part two of the episode Brian, Vince, and Zach of the DC3Cast return to give their thoughts on the third and fourth issues of all the Dawn of X books.

Kevin welcomes guest Elias Rosner back to the show to hit up Marvel's last wave of big news for the decade including two new Dawn of X books and thoughts about whatever "Empyre" might end up being. The pair then cap off 2019 with some finales as they review "Gwenpool Strikes Back" #5, "Guardians of the Galaxy" #12, and "King Thor" #4.

In our first December 2019 episode, host Kevin Gregory gives his first reaction to the newly released Black Widow trailer (spoiler alert: it's kind of meh?) before moving on to other Marvel news from the month of December like the new "Nebula" book. The second part of the show is the second installment of "Imagine What If Stan Lee Created the DC3Cast" as Brian, Vince, and Zach dissect the second month of the Dawn of X books. 

Kevin welcomes guests Elias Rosner and Jake Hill this episode who are filling in for Jess. The trio tackle a couple of Marvel's milestone books of October/November "Immortal Hulk" #25 and "Silver Surfer: Black" #5 before moving in the second half of the show to their individual rankings all the first issues of the Dawn of X era.

In this kick off to the new era of the show Kevin covers the Marvel news from MCM Comic Con London, including the reveal of a new "Giant-Sized X-Men" title, before taking a brief look at the January 2020 solicitations. Then, in the show's newest segment, Brian, Zach, and Vince the hosts of Multiversity Comics's sister show The DC3Cast debut their monthly Dawn of X review segment.

Jess and Kevin take a look at all the Marvel news coming out of New York Comic-Con before turning to the end of "House of X" and "Powers of X" and the new status quo for the X-Men. The pair then kick off Dawn of X with "X-Men" #1 and also take a look at "Doctor Doom" #1.

Last year, Jaina and Elias once again attempted to become a precog and figure out what Marvel was going to get up to in 2023. 10 items each. 11 if you count the Secret Invasion holdover. 10 chances to find out who would win and subject the other to a comic with art they think is bad, bad, bad. 

Elias is competing to make them read "Major X," the "modern" Liefeld return to Marvel that was, uh, very, very odd. Jaina wants Elias to reevaluate his love of 'Castaway in Dimension Z,' the first arc of Rick Remender's 2012 "Captain America" run with art by John Romita Jr.

They were shocked by how much they got right and unsurprised by how much they got wrong. But who won? Well, that would ruin the fun of listening if I told you now, wouldn't it?

How will our intrepid podcasters fair against the insidious intrusions of Ike? The wildly worrysome, patently pernicious Marvel writers program? Then, they transition into a discussion about Jessica Jones season 2 and the first arc of Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos' "Alias."

The second conversation, with Nick Palmieri, discusses Marvel's recent comiXology sale where they sold collections for $.99. The duo go down the digital rabbit hole after that and discuss the implications of digital comics on local comic shops and the direct market.

Elias convinced Jaina that we needed to do this book. Does she regret agreeing? Only time, and this episode, will tell. What did we read? "Look Out for the Little Guy!" aka the in-universe Scott Lang memoir that was actually written in ours by Rob Kutner. Also, as if the universe decided to laugh at me (Elias,) I finally found the author's website when putting the post together. It was not the same Robert Kuttner I thought it was. Dang.

Next time, we keep on the movie and book train as the crew reads "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios." It was, after all, inevitable. 

Long awaited, ever since Jaina lost our 2022 predicitions episode, it's finally time to watch Howard the Duck! Yes, the 1986 film starring Lea Thompkins, Tim Robbins, and some other people we'd rather not name. Written by Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz, directed by Huyck and produced by George "it's like poetry, it rhymes" Lucas, it's truly something that has to be seen to be believed. Not even our well documented love of the duck's comics can save us now.

To that end, this episode is a commentary track! Cue up the film, listen to our intro, wait for the countdown, and enjoy. We had a lot of fun making this and, honestly? Made watching this deeply uncomfortable, absolute mess of a film bearable. You can also listen to it without the film but it's a lot more awkward, which, you know, is the vibe this movie elicits.

HICKMAN! He's back and he's getting ultimate. So ultimate he's launching a brand new line of comics for the universe he helped crash into oblivion. We talk "Ultimate Invasion," "G.O.D.S." #1, and speculate wildly about the new, ultimate versions of Spider-Man, Black Panther, and X-Men. Oh and we also try to summarize what Hickman's been up to since "Inferno." Or Elias tries. "Decorum" is impenetrable, OK?

Next time, we're doing something special and finally, FINALLY watching our bet movie from the start of the year Howard the Duck. Be there or be quacked.

What can we say that the words "Franken-castle" can't convey? This run is bonkers and strange with excellent art and...well, we don't know if we'd call the writing/plot GOOD but it's certainly unique. We do a dive in the career of Rick Remender at Marvel and beyond, figure out what makes the Punisher an enduring and fraught character, and yell at Disney for being spineless, corporate COWARDS with regards to white supremacist/cop usage of the logo. Of course, we also talk about "Frankencastle." This book is so strange y'all. We can't even tell you.

Reading along? The issues are “Dark Reign: The List: Punisher” #1, “Punisher” (2009) #11-21, and "Dark Wolverine" #88-89. If you're reading on Marvel Unlimited, know that "Punisher" was renamed "Franken-Castle" for issues #17-21. Trade readers can find the whole run either in "Punisher," Vol. 3: Franken-Castle or the "Punisher by Rick Remender" omnibus. We also talk about the first ten issues of the run but there's no real need to read them.

Next time, we're seeing if Phase 5 can't redeem itself with "Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 3." You didn't think we'd miss the chance to talk about the Guardians again, would you? Galactus forbid.
