Episode 64 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla starts with the discussions between Dhrutraashtr and his son, Duryodhan about gambling. Duryodhan is able to pressurize his father into agreeing to invite the Paandav brothers for gambling. Dhrutraashtr orders his minister Vidur to go to Indraprasth for inviting Yuddhishthir and brothers. Vidur protests but finally agrees to go. Yuddhishthir is surprised to receive the invitation because he sees the evil in gambling. He is not inclined to play but he is bound by his commitment to never refuse an invitation whether for war or gambling. Paandav brothers depart for Hastinapur. On the way, Vidur briefs Yuddhishthir about the dirty game planned by Shakuni and Duryodhan. (Mahabharat/Sabhaaparv/ Duyat Parv/Chapters 55-58).

The struggle in the epic is the clash between two different life-values. Dwaipaayan Krishn and Vaasudev Krishn put in relentless and continuous efforts to establish and strengthen the same fundamental values and ideals for which Ram fought the war against Raavan. By learning and understanding this story and by adopting the learnings into our behaviour we can make our life happy and rich.

Episode 63 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla describes the discussions that took place between Dhrutraashtr, Duryodhan, Vidur and Shakuni. Duryodhan and Shakuni wanted to invite Yuddhishthir for gambling. Dhrutraashtr knew that gambling is an evil that leads to destruction of the family but he was not able to resist the emotional blackmail of Duryodhan. Vidur was strongly opposed to gambling and he said so in absolutely clear words. Though Vidur was able to force Dhrutraashtr to hesitate, he failed to put brakes on the evil designs of Duryodhan. Episode 62 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla describes the events following successful completion of Raajsooy Yagy. When Maharshi Ved Vyas was departing, Yuddhishthir asked Maharshi whether all disturbances had ended with the killing of Shishupaal. Maharshi smiled and said that troubles have just started and would continue for thirteen years. At the end of it, there would be massive destruction of Kshatriyas. The destruction will be centred on Yuddhishthir, will be caused by the crime of Duryodhan and will end by the bravery of Bheem and Arjun. This disturbed Yuddhishthir enormously and he thought of committing suicide but was stopped from taking the extreme step. Duryodhan went around seeing the great conference hall built for Raajsooy Yagy. Where there was no water, he thought that the place had water. And where there was a pond, he stepped as if it was just an illusion. He was ridiculed and laughed at by Paandav brothers excluding Yuddhishthir. On the way back to Hastinaapur, Duryodhan was burning with jealously and insult. He wanted to die if he could not get hold of the riches of Paandavs. Shakuni, his maternal uncle, suggested that Duryodhan could snatch all the wealth of Paandavs by defeating them in a game of dice. Episode 61 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla describes the story of killing of Shishupaal by Vaasudev Krishn and ends with the completion of Raajsooy yagy. Shishupaal challenged Krishn to a fight. Krishn addressed all the kings present there and narrated all the crimes that Shishupaal had committed. Shishupaal ridiculed and made fun of all that Krishn said. Krishn used his Sudarshan chakr and killed Shisupaal in a very quick way. After Shishupaal’s death, Shishupaal’s son was crowned as the king of Chedi. After that Raajsooy yagy was duly completed as per original plan without any further disturbance. Episode 60 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla describes the story of Shishupaal’s birth and also the way Shishupaal insulted Bheeshm, Vaasudev Krishn and Paandavs after objecting to Paandavs worshipping Krishn before everyone else. When Shishupaal was insulting Bheeshm etc, Bheem got infuriated and wanted to attack Shishupaal. Bheeshm stopped Bheem and narrated the story of birth of Shishupaal. The story described how Krishn granted a boon to Shishupaal’s mother and promised that he would forgive hundred wrongs done by Shishupaal. Bheeshm said that Shishupaal was inviting his own death by his mindless words. Bheesm challenged all present to a fight. (Mahabharat/Sabhaaparv/ Shishupaalvadh Parv/Chapters 40-44).

Episode 59 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla describes some key events at the start of Yuddhishthir’s Raajsooy yagy. When all the kings and other dignitaries assembled, Bheeshm asked Yuddhishthir to start with offering pooja to the assembled kings. He also instructed Yuddhishthir to first of all offer pooja to the one who was most powerful and the best among all present. Yuddhishthir asked Bheeshm for guidance about who was most deserving of being worshipped before all present. Bheeshm told that undoubtedly Vaasudev Krishn deserved the honour. Based on that, Sahdev offered pooja to Krishn and Krishn graciously accepted the pooja. This infuriated Chediraaj Shishupaal who loudly protested against it calling Krishn’s pooja as an open insult to all the kings who were present there. Yuddhishthir tried to calm Shishupaal down. Bheeshm stopped Yuddhishthir. He took a hard line against Shishupaal and defended his decision of offering first pooja to Krishn. Sahdev added to the hard line set by Bheeshm and challenged to a fight anyone who disagreed with the decision. Hearing this, Shishupaal and some of his friends started preparing for war. Episode 58 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla starts with Nakul’s victorious campaign towards the West. As Yuddhishthir was thinking about preparing for Raajsooy yagy, Vaasudev Krishn came to Indraprasth. Yuddhishthir welcomed Krishn and requested Krishn to be the key person for the Raajsooy yagy. Krishn asked Yuddhishthir to play the key role. After receiving instructions from Krishn, Yuddhishthir started planning and preparations for the grand yagy. Arrangements were made for housing and food for the large number of guests that were expected. Special ambassadors were sent to invite kings, brahmins, businessmen and also prominent shoodrs. Yuddhishthir sent his brother Nakul as a special emissary to Hastinapur to invite family and relatives. Soon, kings and others started arriving. Yudhishthir welcomed them all. Episode 57 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla discusses the victorious campaign towards south led by Sahdev. On his journey towards the south, Sahdev encountered many kingdoms. He could win many by diplomacy, but was required to use force in some cases. Sahdev was fighting against King Neel’s army when he found that Neel was supported by Agnidev. Neel prayed to Agnidev and said that all offerings in Raajsooy yagy would be to Agnidev and hence, Agnidev should not act as a hindrance. Agnidev blessed Sahdev and agreed to help. On Agnidev’s instructions, Neel agreed to pay taxes to Sahdev. When Sahdev reached the bridge which was constructed by Ram and which led to Lanka, Sahdev decided to call his nephew Ghatotkatch, son of Bheem and Hidimbaa, to act as an ambassador to Vibheeshan, the King of Lanka. Ghatotkatch visited Lanka and Vibheeshan agreed to cooperate by paying taxes. (Mahabharat/Sabhaaparv/ Digvijay Parv/Chapter 31).

The episode begins with a discussion on the concept of Raajssoy yagy and of Bharatvarsh. Arjun offered to go to north direction for winning over the kingdoms and kings located there. Maharshi Dwaipaayan Krishn and other rishis present were very pleased with the proposal. Maharshi directed that Arjun should go towards north, Bheem should go towards east while Sahdev should go towards the south and Nakul should go in the western direction. As per the directions of Maharshi, four brothers proceeded in the four directions. Arjun conquered the kingdoms of north, while Bheem was victorious in the east. Immediately after the death of Jaraasandh, the three rushed to the cave where various kings had been kept as prisoners and liberated all the kings. When they returned to the capital city, they were welcomed by the Brahmins and citizens of Magadh. Jaraasandh’s son, Sehdev, most humbly sought their permission to perform the last rites of his father. Once the last rites of Jaraasandh had been duly carried out, Krishn crowned Sehdev as the king of Magadh. They returned to Indraprasth with all the liberated kings. Episode 54 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla discusses the killing of Jaraasandh by Bheem under the guidance of Krishn. The three warriors, Krishn, Bheem and Arjun, reached the capital of Magadh dressed as Brahmins. After reaching there, they announced their presence, strength and intentions in a bold manner by damaging the top of a mountain which was held sacred by royal family and people of Magadh. They met Jaraasandh, but called him for a meeting after midnight. In the post-midnight meeting Krishn declared their animosity towards Jaraasandh due to his imprisonment of large number of kings. Krishn asked Jaraasandh to either release all the kings or prepare for death in a fight. Jaraasandh chose to fight. In a fight that lasted day and night for fourteen days, Bheem and Jaraasandh fought ferociously. When Jaraasandh started getting tired, Krishn motivated Bheem to finish off Jaraasandh. With guidance from Krishn, Bheem killed Jaraasandh by splitting him in two parts and throwing the two parts in two opposite directions. (Mahabharat/Sabhaaparv/ Jaraasandhvadh Parv/Chapter 21-24).

Episode 53 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla discusses firstly the birth of Jaraasandh. King Brahdrath did not have any children. He met Muni Chandkaushik and expressed his sorrow at being childless. Muni gave a mango to the King who gave it to his two wives. The wives split the mango between them. In due course, both the queens gave birth to half-babies with each one having only one leg, one arm, one eye and so on. They decided to throw the half-babies. A raakshasee Jaraa picked up the two half-babies and joined them. The two parts merged together and a baby boy came to life who was named Jaraasandh. Krishn narrated the above story to Dharmraaj Yuddhishthir and sought permission to go with Bheem and Arjun to kill Jaraasandh. After getting the permission, the three departed to Magadh with the objective of killing Jaraasandh. (Mahabharat/Sabhaaparv/ Raajsooyaarambh Parv & Jaraasandhvadh Parv/Chapter 17-20).

Episode 52 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla discusses the deliberations that took place when Krishn visited Indraprasth in connection with the proposed Raajsooy Yagy. Krishn summed up the political situation at that point time. Krishn told that Jaraasandh had declared himself to be the emperor and had put large number of kings in prison. Yuddhishthir could not become an emperor as long as Jaraasandh was alive. Krishn told about the number of wars that they had fought against Jaraasandh and had failed to defeat him. Hearing all this Yuddhishthir was inclined to give up his dream of becoming an emperor. However, Bheem and Arjun, along with Krishn, argued for killing Jaraasandh in a one-to-one fight instead of fighting a war with his army. (Mahabharat/Sabhaaparv/ Raajsooyaarambh Parv/Chapter 14-17).

Episode 51 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla discusses the birth of the idea of King Yuddhishthir doing a Raajsooy Yagy and becoming emperor (samraat). Maharshi Naarad conveyed to Dharmraaj Yuddhishthir the message from Maharaaj Paandu asking him to do a Raajsooy Yagy. Yuddhishthir liked the idea but did not want to rush through such a major task. He first concentrated on building his reputation through implementing the preachings of Naarad regarding a king’s dharm. Subsequently, he discussed the proposal with his brothers, his ministers and his well-wishers. All of them supported the idea. But, Yuddhishthir was not satisfied. He thought that Vaasudev Krishn would be the best person to advise in this regard. So, he sent a special emissary to Dwarka requesting Krishn to come to Indraprasth for discussions. Krishn came to Indraprasth with the emissary. (Mahabharat/Sabhaaparv/ Lokpaalsabhaakhyaan Parv and Raajsooyaarambh Parv/Chapter 5-13).

Episode 50 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla discusses the second part of the preachings by Maharshi Naarad to Dharmraaj Yuddhishthir. The first part was in episode 49. This part begins with Maharshi speaking about agriculture, irrigation and welfare of farmers. He also talks about taxation and the way a king should punish for wrongs done by offenders. Maharshi asks Yuddhishthir about corruption by his employees. Lastly, Maharshi Naarad speaks about the fourteen faults of kings. It is interesting to note that Ram had mentioned exactly the same fourteen faults of a king when Bharat had met Ram in the forest. Episode 48 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla discusses the building of a huge convention centre for Paandavs by Mayaasur, the engineer of daitys. After the burning down of Khaandav forest by Agni dev, Mayaasur was sitting with Arjun and Krishn feeling most obliged. He offered to do something for Arjun. But Arjun was hesitant in asking for a favour from someone whose life he had saved. So, Arjun asked Mayaasur to do whatever Krishn asked him to do. Krishn asked Mayaasur to build a sabhaa bhavan (convention centre) for King Yuddhishthir. Mayaasur was very happy to do so. He travelled to a far-off place north of Himalayas and got some key valuable construction materials from there. He also got a superb gadaa for Bhim and a special shankh (conch) for Arjun. Mayaasur constructed a massive and extremely beautiful sabha bhavan for Yuddhishthir in fourteen months. After completing the bhavan and handing it over to King Yuddhishthir, Mayaasur departed from Indraprasth. (Mahabharat/Sabhaaparv/Sabhaakriya Parv/Chapter 1-3).

Episode 47 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla discusses the stories of persons who escaped from the terrible burning down of Khaandavvan. Ashwasen, son of snake king Takshak was the first to escape. Mayaasur, the engineer and architect of the king of daitys, was trying to run away from the inferno. Krishn saw him and was about to kill him. Mayaasur saw Arjun and rushed to Arjun with an appeal to save his life. Arjun obliged him and took him under his protection. Rushi Mandpaal had given birth to four sons, with a female bird named Jaritaa. These four sons were also rushis. Rushi Mandpaal prayed to Agni Dev to save his sons. Episode 46 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla discusses the events that took place when Khaandav forest was burned down by Agni dev. It was a terrible scene with thousands of animals, birds, creatures dying in the fire or getting killed by either Arjun or Krishn. Devraj Indr rushed with clouds and rained water on the fire. A fierce war broke out between Indr and Arjun. Indr tried all the weapons that he had, but failed. Other devtas, asurs etc. also joined to help Indr. Arjun defeated everyone forcing them to retreat. Episode 45 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla discusses the events that led to burning down of Khaandav forest. Krishn and Arjun had gone with families to a resort on the bank of river Yamuna for fun. While they were having fun, a tall Brahmin visited them and asked them to feed him to his full satisfaction. Arjun and Krishn asked the Brahmin about what he wanted to eat. Brahmin said that he was Agni dev and he wanted to eat Khaandav forest. Agnidev told them about how he had tried to do it in the past and had failed due to intervention by Indr. Agnidev wanted them to, on one hand, stop Indr from extinguishing the fire and, on the other hand, prevent any creature from escaping. The two agreed but Arjun requested Agni dev for the right tools and weapons for the task. Agni dev gave Gaandeev Dhanush to Arjun. Agni dev gave chakr and a gadaa to Krishn. With the divine weapons in hand, the two were ready to help Agni dev burn down the forest of Khaandav. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Khaandavdaah Parv/Chapter 221-224).

Episode 44 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla discusses the events after Arjun came to Indraprasth with his new wife – Subhadra, Krishn’s sister. While others welcomed Arjun, Draupadee was angry. She said many harsh words to Arjun, scolded him and told him to go away. Arjun had a hard time consoling Draupadee. He had to apologise many times to her. But when Subhadra met Draupadee, Subhadra managed to win Draupadee over by her respectful attitude. Draupadee blessed Subhadra as a younger sister. Soon, Krishn, Balram and others from Dwarka came to Indraprasth with gifts for the whole family. They were received with warmth, affection and respect. A few days later, all of them, except Krishn, departed. Krishn stayed there to spend time with his friend, Arjun. Soon Arjun and Subhadra were blessed with a son who was named Abhimanyu. Episode 43 of the conversations between Dr. Yogita Pant and Dr. Anil Chawla discusses the events leading to Arjun’s marriage with Subhadra, Krishna’s sister. After departing from Manipur, Arjun moved to the western coast of India. He came to Prabhas which was close to Dwarka, the city where Vaasudev Krishn was living. Krishn learnt about Arjun’s presence at Prabhas and came to see his old friend. Krishn took Arjun to Dwarka. While at Dwarka, the two went to a fair where Arjun saw Subhadra, Krishn’s sister, and fell in love with her at first sight. Krishn noticed Arjun’s love for his sister. Krishn advised Arjun to kidnap Subhadra. Arjun sought his elder brother Yuddhishthir’s permission and on receiving the go-ahead, kidnapped Subhadra with help from Krishn. Balram and others at Dwarka were very angry. They were ready to attack Arjun and have a war. Krishn, however, advised them against such a course. They accepted Krishn’s advice. They welcomed Arjun and Subhadra to Dwarka and got them married. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Arjunvanvaas Parv/Chapters 217-220).

Episode 42 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the events after Arjun reached Manipur. Arjun saw Chitraangada, beautiful daughter of King Chitravaahak of Manipur. Arjun fell in love with her and wanted to marry her. King Chitravaahak permitted them subject to the condition that their first son will belong to the King, shall stay with him and shall be his heir. Arjun accepted the condition. Arjun lived in Manipur for three years and moved towards south after the birth of his son. While moving south, he reached a place which was infested with dangerous crocodiles who were actually apsaras and had lost their beauty due to a curse. Arjun boldly entered the dangerous waters and pulled the crocodiles out of water. On being pulled out, the crocodiles became apsaras again. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Arjunvanvaas Parv/Chapters 214-216).

Episode 41 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the events that led to Arjun leaving Indraprasth for twelve years. Some looters looted cows of a Brahmin. The Brahmin came to the palace of Paandavs and cried for help. All the weapons of Paandavs were kept at a place where Yuddhishthir was spending time alone with Draupadee. Violating their privacy was punishable. However, Arjun decided to walk in to pick up his bow and arrows. Arjun was able to overpower the looters and get the Brahmin’s cows back. As per the agreed rule, Arjun decided to depart from Indraprasth and go to forest for twelve years. His first stop was Gangadwar or Haridwar. At Haridwar while bathing in Gangaa, he was kidnapped by Uloopee, daughter of Naag king. The two married for a night and parted thereafter. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Arjunvanvaas Parv/Chapters 212-213).

Episode 40 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the events that took place after Paandavs along with Vaasudev Krishn reached Khaandavprasth, a thick forest. Krishn thought of Indr who understood the reason for Krishn’s thoughts. Indr instructed Vishwakarmaa to build a beautiful city at Khaandavprasth. A rich city with all amenities was built and was named as Indrprasth. After the city was built, Krishn departed telling the Paandavs that Devarshi Naarad would be visiting them soon. Devarshi visited them and told them the story of two powerful brothers Sund and Upsund who had been blessed by Brahmaa that they would not be killed by anyone except by each other. Sund and Upsund fell for a beautiful apsara Tilottamaa and killed each other. Naarad advised the Paandavs to make rules regarding living with their shared wife. Episode 39 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the events that took place after Vidur visited Paanchaal to invite Paandavs back to Hastinapur. Vidur had gone with gifts for all. He met King Drupad and requested the king to send Paandavs along with wife to Hastinapur. After getting the approval of King Drupad, Paandavs along with Krishna as well as Krishn and Balram moved to Hastinapur. Paandavs received a warm welcome in Hastinapur. After they were settled and had some rest, Dhrutraashtr called Yuddhishthir and his brothers. Dhrutraashtr told Yuddhishtir to take half the kingdom and leave for Khaandavprasth. Episode 38 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the deliberations that took place in the royal court of Hastinapur when Dhrutraashtr called Bheeshm, Guru Dron and other ministers for consultations. Gangaaputr Bheeshm declared that he did not want any animosity with Paandavs. He advised that half of the kingdom be given to the Paandavs. Guru Dron agreed with Bheeshm’s advice and further advised that the Paandavs should be brought to Hastinapur with due respect. Karn, who wanted Kauravs to attack Paandavs, tried to criticize Bheeshm and Guru Dron. Karn received no support and was put in place by Guru Dron who scolded him. Vidur also supported Bheeshm and Dron. Vidur pressed on Dhrutraashtr to accept the advice received. Pressed like this, Dhrutraashtr accepted the advice of Bheeshm and Dron. Duryodhan had various ideas for finishing the five sons of Paandu. He suggested all of them to his father Dhrutraashtr asking his father to choose whatever seems workable. Duryodhan also asked his friend Karn for his views. Karn disagreed with the views of Durydhan and instead suggested direct attack on the Paandvs at the earliest before they become stronger with support from friends and relatives. Episode 36 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the five weddings of Draupadee with the Paandav brothers, the gifts showered on them and the events that followed the weddings. All the kings who had come for Draupadee’s swayamvar came to know through their detectives that Draupadee had married the five sons of Paandu. This was a great surprise for everyone since they thought that the Paandavs had died in the fire at Vaarnavat. The biggest shock was in the camp of contingent from Hastinaapur. Duryodhan and the sons of Dhrutraashtr along with Karn and Shakuni were dumbfounded. Shakuni advised that they should immediately attack the Paandavs and kill them. The advice was countered by Bhurishravaa son of Somdutt. The contingent returned to Hastinaapur where Vidur learnt of the developments in Paanchaal and also informed Dhrutraashtr. Episode 35 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the developments and deliberations that took place before Drupad conveyed his consent to his daughter Krishna marrying five brothers. After Draupadee went away with Arjun and Bheem, Drupad was worried about the varn (vocation) of her would-be-husband. He tried to determine this by checking for their interests. Subsequently, Drupad asked Yuddhishthir directly. Yuddhishthir told Drupad about their family. After the Paandavs had been duly settled, Drupad raised the subject of formal marriage ceremony. At that time, Yuddhishthir informed about the decision of Krishna marrying all five brothers. This was shocking for Drupad as well as his son. It needed Maharshi Ved Vyas to intervene and explain the background of the decision. After listening to Maharshi, Drupad consented to his daughter’s marriage with the five brothers. Episode 34 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the events that took place when Draupadee along with Arjun and Bheem reached the place where Paandavs had put up. Arjun asked mother Kuntee to see what they had brought as bhiksha. Without even looking at what Arjun had brought, Kuntee replied that whatever it is, all the brothers should get it. When Kuntee saw Draupadee, she was shocked and sorry at what she had spoken. She asked Yuddhishthir to think it over and take a decision. Yuddhishthir thought over the matter and asked Arjun to go ahead and marry Draupadee. Arjun, however, objected and said that he could not marry till his elder brother was unmarried. There was silence after this. Draupadee was looking at the five brothers and the brothers were looking at her. They felt that a swayamvar was only for Kshatriyas and a Brahmin had no business participating in it. Nevertheless, they did not want to kill the Brahmin. Their anger was directed at King Drupad and they moved forward to attack him. Drupad rushed and took shelter with the Brahmins. Bheem and Arjun immediately took positions to defend Drupad. Bheem uprooted a large tree and stood with the tree as a weapon. Karn fought with Arjun, but retreated after a fierce battle. Shaly fought with Bheem who threw him on the ground but did not kill him. Seeing the defeat of two mighty kings, other kings lost the will to fight. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Swayamvar Parv/Chapters 188 and 189).

Episode 32 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the swayamvar of Draupadee and Arjun’s success there. On reaching the capital of King Drupad, Paandavs stayed at the house of a potter and earned their living by begging. The whole city was having a major festival with kings from across the country assembled there. On the appointed day, all the kings, Brahmins and many others assembled to see the spectacle. Dhrushtdyumn, Draupadee’s brother showed the bow and arrow which were to be used by the candidates to shoot down a rotating target through a narrow hole. Paandvas were sitting there along with Brahmins. Initially, various kings tried to pick up the bow and shoot, but failed miserably. Karn could pick up the bow and was getting ready to shoot when Draupadee intervened to reject him. Other powerful kings also tried and failed horribly. At the end, Arjun who was dressed as a forest-dweller Brahmin, got up. Arjun could hit the target without any difficulty. Seeing that a poor Brahmin had achieved what they could not, the Kings got infuriated. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Swayamvar Parv/Chapters 183, 184, 185, 186 and 187).

Episode 31 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the fight between Gandharvraaj Angaarparn (Chitrarath) and Arjun. Arjun defeats the Gandharv very quickly using the special weapon that he had received from his Guru Dron. Arjun presents the defeated Chitrarath to elder brother Yuddhishthir who, on an appeal from the Gandharv’s wife, decides to spare Chitrarath’s life. Chitrarath requests for Arjun’s friendship and the two become friends. The two exchange gifts. Chitrarath advises the Paandavs to have a learned Brahmin with them and also recommends the name of Dhaumy Muni as a suitable person. Paandavs visit the ashram of Dhaumy Muni and request him to become their purohit. Dhaumy Muni accepts their invitation. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Chaitrrath Parv/Chapters 169, 182 and 183).

Episode 30 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the story of birth of Krishnaa / Draupadee daughter of King Drupad and also of the birth of Dhrushtdyuman son of King Drupad. The story was narrated to the Pandavs by a Brahmin who visited their host in Ekchakra. After losing half his kingdom to Guru Dron, Drupad was extremely disturbed. He felt that none of his sons and relatives were capable and talented. Drupad wanted a son who could defeat Guru Dron. He also wanted a daughter who would be suitable to become queen of Arjun. Drupad convinced Rushi Yaaj to do a yagya for getting such a son and a daughter. Krishnaa and her brother emerged out of fire. The visiting Brahmin also told the Paandavs that a swayamvar of Draupadee had been planned by King Drupad. Maharshi Ved Vyas also visited the Paandavs and instructed them to proceed to Panchaal-nagree where the swayamvar was going to take place. He also narrated the story of earlier life of Draupadee and how she had been blessed to have five husbands. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Chaitrrath Parv/Chapters 164, 165, 166, 167 and 168).

Episode 29 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the events that led to killing of Bak by Bheem. Kuntee and Bheem had committed to the Brahmin that Bheem will go to the cannibal raakshas. When Yuddhishthir came to know of the decision, he was not happy. He criticized his mother for agreeing to sacrifice her son to save someone else’s son. Kuntee answered Yuddhishthir rationally on the basis of dharm. Yuddhishthir agreed with his mother’s arguments. Bheem went next morning to the place where cannibal Bak lived carrying with him large amount of food. After reaching there, Bheem started eating the food while calling out Bak. Soon the cannibal came out and was furious seeing someone eating his food. Bak attacked Bheem. The fight ended with Bheem killing Bak with his hands. Bak’s relatives came out scared. Bheem assured them that they would be safe if they did not attack humans. Bheem carried the dead body of Bak to the city’s gate, left it there and went away without telling anyone about it. Soon, people of the town learnt that Bak had been killed. They were full of joy and celebrated in honour of the unknown person who had killed Bak. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Bakvadh Parv/Chapters 161, 162 and 163).

Every day one family of the city (by turns) was required to send huge quantity of cooked rice, two buffaloes and a human being for the cannibal raakshas. Next day was their turn and it was devastating for their family. Kuntee said that they need not worry. Her son, Bheem, will go instead of any of them and will face the raakshas. Episode 27 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the quick turn of events after Bheem killed Hidimb. Paandavs decided to move away quickly from the place since death of such a major raakshas would not go unnoticed. As they started moving Hidimbaa, Hidimb’s sister, once again expressed her love for Bheem and her desire to marry him. Bheem was not inclined and told her to go on the same path as her brother. Yuddhishthir objected to this. Hidimbaa pleaded with Kuntee and also offered to help Paandavs settle down at a pond nearby. Kuntee was moved by her pleadings on the basis of dharm. Hidimbaa took Paandavs to a place near the ashram of Shaalihotr Muni where she built cottages for them. Bheem and Hidimbaa got married with some conditions. Episode 26 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the events that took place in the forest when a raakshas, Hidimb saw Bheem, his brothers and mother. Hidimb was a cannibal. He wanted to eat these humans. He ordered his sister, Hidimbaa, to kill the humans and bring the dead bodies for them to feast on. Hidimbaa went to the place where the Paandavs were resting. Hidimbaa saw Bheem and was mesmerized by his beauty. Hidimbaa decided that she would get more pleasure by marrying this man instead of by eating his meat. Hidimbaa took on the appearance of a beautiful young woman with nice ornaments and beautiful clothes. She went to Bheem and proposed to him. She told him about her brother who wanted to eat the Paandavs. She offered to protect Paandavs from Hidimb by carrying all of them on her back. Bheem refused her offer because his elder brother was still not married. In the meantime, Hidimb came there. Hidimb saw his sister’s beautiful appearance and he knew that she has fallen in love with Bheem. Hidimb was furious and wanted to kill his sister along with all the Paandavs and Kuntee. Bheem challenged Hidimb to a fight and the two started fighting. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Hidimbvadh Parv/Chapters 151, and 152).

Episode 25 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the events that took place after escaping from the burning house at Vaarnaavat through the long dark tunnel. Paandavs along with mother Kuntee reached the shore of river Ganga. A boat, sent by Vidur, was waiting to take them across the mighty river. The forest on the other side of the river was terrible with hardly any edible fruits and water. Bheem was carrying mother Kuntee on his shoulder and was also carrying Nakul and Sahdev in his arms. Simultaneously, he was supporting Yuddhishthir and Arjun. In addition, Bheem was clearing up the way of trees, thorny bushes etc. They walked like this for many days. At a point, Kuntee could take it no more. She was restless with thirst. They stopped under a peepal tree while Bheem went around to look for water. When Bheem returned, his brothers and mother had already slept due to exhaustion. Bheem kept watch to ensure their safety. This marks the end of Jatugryh Parv. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Jatugryh Parv/Chapters 148, 149, and 150).

Episode 24 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the events that took place after the Paandavs reached the town of Vaarnaavat. Minister Purochan had been instructed by Duryodhan to construct a highly inflammable house at Vaarnaavat with only one entry / exit at the front and no other escapes. Purochan was at Vaarnaavat to receive the Paandav brothers and their mother Kuntee. Initially, they stayed at a different camp and ten days later moved to the house, called Shivbhavan, especially constructed to house the Paandavs. Immediately on moving there, Yuddhishthir knew that the house could catch fire any time. He told the same to Bheem who was furious and wanted to get out immediately. Yuddhishthir explained to him the practical situation and stressed on the need to build a tunnel to escape from the house. Purochan’s room was at the entrance. An expert miner or tunnel-digger sent by Vidur approached them soon and started the work of tunnel digging. The work took about one year. During this time, Paandavs used to spend their days in the forest hunting and in the evening used to stand guard on Purcohan to ensure that he did not burn down the house. When the tunnel was complete, Paandavs and Kuntee escaped from the tunnel while Bheem burnt down the house. Purochan died in the fire and the brothers were unhurt. Episode 23 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the departure of Pandav brothers with their mother Kuntee from Hastinapur under order of Dhrutraashtr. As the Pandav brothers started gaining name and fame, Duryodhan, Karn, Shakuni and Dushshaasan met to discuss a plan to tackle this growing challenge. Based on the plan worked out by them, Duryodhan went to his father asking for the Pandav brothers along with mother Kuntee to be sent to Vaarnaavat, a distant town. Dhrutraashtr did have any in-principle objections to the plan, but had his doubts about the practical aspects. Duryodhan cleared all the doubts of Dhrutraashtr and the latter agreed to do as per the conspiracy. A campaign was launched to build a good image of the town of Vaarnaavat. When Dhutraashtr felt that the Paandavs may be keen to go to Vaarnaavat, he softly suggested to the Paandavs to go there. Yuddhishthir accepted the suggestion seeing their helplessness. When the Pandavs and Kuntee were departing for Vaarnaavat, Vidur warned Yuddhishthir about the danger that was waiting for them there. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Jatugryh Parv/Chapters 140, 141, 142, 144).

Episode 22 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the developments in Hastinapur after the princes returned on completing their education. Guru Dron asked for a special guru Dakshina from Arjun seeking a promise that Arjun would not hesitate to even fight Guru Dron himself in a battlefield. Yuddhishthir was crowned as yuvraaj (crown prince) and started earning a lot of name and fame with his good behaviour. Bheem continued to develop his fighting skills under Balram. Arjun took up the task of getting various kings to behave. Arjun went in different directions and conquered many kingdoms. The glory of Pandavs made Dhrutraashtr a worried man. He called Kanik for advice. Kanik tutored Dhrutraashtr on practical morals of politics advising him to play dirty and crooked. Kanik also narrated the story of a jackal and four friends to explain his point more clearly. Kanik’s advice, which Dhrutraashtr tacitly agreed with, was to behave well with Pandavs and to kill them when an opportunity to do so arose. This episode marks the end of Sambhav Parv. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Sambhav Parv/Chapters 138-139).

Episode 21 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the revenge of Guru Dron with his friend King Drupad. After the princes had finished their education, Guru Dron asked them to bring King Drupad as a prisoner as guru Dakshina. Duryodhan, his brothers, friends including Karn rushed to attack along with the army of Hastinapur. They were ill-prepared and had no strategy. They came under severe attack with the residents of the capital joining the defending army. Pandavs under the leadership of Arjun decided to let the Kauravs go first. Arjun planned out his strategy. He asked Yuddhishthir to wait near Guru Dron. Arjun decided that he would be on a chariot with Nakul and Sehdev defending the wheels of the chariot. Bheem was to go on foot and enter the enemy army. Duryodhan, Karn and the army accompanying them were beaten badly. As soon as the news of their fleeing came, Arjun and brothers started the attack. After a fierce battle, Arjun captured Drupad and presented him to his guru. Guru Dron treated Drupad most respectfully, returned half the kingdom to Drupad and asked for friendship. Episode 20 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the events that happened on the day when princes showcased their abilities before the royals and people of Hastinapur. The ceremony began with collective presentations by all princes. A demonstration fight between Bheem and Duryodhan was next. The fight turned real with half the audience cheering Bheem and the other half cheering Duryodhan. As emotions seemed to get out of control, Guru Dron instructed his son to stop the fight. Arjun was the next and the only planned solo presenter. Arjun presented his skills that left the audience truly impressed and wonderstruck. Just as Arjun’s performance was coming to an end, Karn entered the stadium and told Arjun that Arjun should not feel proud of his performance. After that Karn performed every single act that Arjun had done. After the performance, Karn expressed desire of a direct fight with Arjun. The challenge was accepted by Arjun. Just as the two were getting ready for the fight, Acharya Kryp asked Karn to give introduction of his family since Arjun, who was a prince, could only fight with a prince. Duryodhan defended Karn based on logical arguments. He further decided to crown Karn as the king of Ang. Episode 19 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla discusses the time that sons of Dhrutraashtr and Paandu spent receiving education from Guru Dron who taught not only the princes but also various others including Vasushen (later called Karn) who was the son of a chariot driver. Guru Dron had the agenda of taking revenge for the way he was insulted by Drupad. One day he asked all his students whether they would do something that he wanted after completing their education. While others kept silent, Arjun said yes and took a vow to that effect. This made him the favourite student. Even otherwise, Arjun was meticulous, sharp and always eager to learn new things. Arjun would focus sharply and achieve every goal. Once Guru asked all his students to focus on an artificial bird before shooting it down. Guru asked each student what the student was seeing. Every student replied that he was seeing various things. Only Arjun said that he saw nothing but the head of the bird. Arjun was the only one to pass that exam. Once, Guru Dron was taking bath in the river Ganga. A crocodile got hold of his leg. Hearing that the Guru was in distress, Arjun took no time to shoot arrows and kill the crocodile while other students were too shocked to act. Guru was extremely happy and decided to give the knowledge of a special weapon called Brahmshir to Arjun. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Sambhav Parv/Chapters 131-132).

Responsibility for initial education of princes of Hastinapur was entrusted to Aachary Krup who was son of Shardwaan Gautam. Maharaj Shantanu found two newborn children during a hunting expedition. He named the boy as Krup and the girl as Krupee. After some time Shardwaan came to know about his children. He came and educated them. Dron was son of Maharshi Bhardwaaj who had taught Agnivesh, son of Agnidev. Dron was taught by Agnivesh. When Dron was a child, he became friendly with Drupad who was son of King Prushat. Dron was married to Krupee. The couple was blessed with a son named Ashwatthaamaa. Dron was facing financial hardships when he learnt that Maharshi Parshuram had decided to donate all his wealth. Dron went to Parshuram but was disappointed since Parshuram had already given away his wealth. However, Parshuram gave him some very valuable knowledge about important weapons. Dron went to his childhood friend Drupad who had by then become king. Drupad insulted him and denied friendship with him. Kuntee and sons of Paandu returned to Hastinaapur accompanied by rishis. Various rituals related to death of Mahaaraj Paandu were carried out. However, there was no coronation of Yudhishthir. Sensing the bad times that were ahead Maharshi Ved Vyas advised Satyavatee to leave Hastinaapur. Satyavatee accompanied by her daughters-in-law Ambikaa and Ambalikaa left Hastinaapur. They died in the forest after some time. Duryodhan and his brothers were not happy with the return of five sons of Paandu. They noticed that Bheem was clearly the strongest. Bheem was able to beat everyone in all sports. Bheem could even carry ten children of his own age. Duryodhan looked at Bheem’s strength as a threat to his dream of becoming king. He planned to kill Bheem by poisoning him and throwing the body in river. Duryodhan executed his meticulously planned strategy. However, by a strange turn of events, Bheem survived and returned with the strength of ten thousand elephants and with the ability to digest any poison. On the fateful day, Paandu and Maadree went for a walk in the forest. Maadree was looking very beautiful. Paandu yielded to the temptation and tried to establish sexual relations with her. Due to the curse of Muni, Paandu died instantly. His wives, Kuntee and Maadree, were shocked and sad. Both wanted to get into fire and follow in the footsteps of Paandu. The rishis, who were present there, advised the two against such a step asking them to instead take care of the five sons. Kuntee accepted their advice. Maadree was determined to die. She handed over her two sons to Kuntee and said her parting words to all present. The same day, Paandu was cremated and Maadree sacrificed her life in the same fire. Gaandhaaree had been blessed by Shiva to have a hundred sons. However, she wanted to be sure that the sons are biological descendants of her husband and herself. So, she sought and received this blessing from Maharshi Ved Vyas. In due course, Gaandhaaree became pregnant. The pregnancy continued for about two years. When Gaandhaaree heard about birth of Kuntee’s eldest son, Gaandhaaree was furious and hit her stomach very strongly. A big hard lump appeared. Maharshi Ved Vyas came and did an elaborate procedure which involved splitting the big hard lump into parts and growing each part separately in a vessel. In due course, Duryodhan was born followed by his ninety nine brothers. Birth of Duryodhan was accompanied by many bad omens and Dhrutraashtr was advised to get rid of the child. However, Dhrutraashtr did not accept the advice. When Maharshi was splitting the big lump into pieces, Gaandhaaree wished for a daughter in addition to the hundred sons. Maharishi obliged her by saving a piece from the lump to be a girl. When Gaandhaaree was pregnant, a prostitute was kept in the service of Dhrutraashtr. Yuyutsu was born to the prostitute. Yuyutsu was the second son of Dhrutraashtr. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Sambhav Parv/Chapter 114, 115 and 116).
