CHOREOGRAPHY! Exploring the creative process behind choreography and performance!30 Sep 202600:23:56

Choreography Insights: Creating Dance Magic
Exploring the creative process behind choreography and performance.
Welcome back to another episode of Lyric in Motion. This week, I’m diving into the art of choreography. For those of you who are dancers, choreographers, or simply curious about the behind-the-scenes process of a Choreographer, this episode is for you.
The Choreographer's Journey
With over 20 years of experience in choreography and 30 years of performance, I've had the privilege of working across various platforms—from theme parks , cruise ships,to national tours. Currently, I’m in the thick of choreographing a new Christmas segment for the Country Roads USA show in Nashville, and it’s a wonderful reminder of the layers that go into creating a dance.
Starting with a Blank Canvas
Every choreography begins with a blank canvas. The process starts with me visualizing the end product. Often, I work from a pre-written script and music, allowing me to focus on how to bring the story to life through movement.
“Living with the music is key. I want to feel the dynamics and rhythms that will guide the choreography.”
— Laurin Floyd Turner

The Creative Process
When I step into the studio, my first task is to immerse myself in the music and script. Understanding the overall picture is essential, especially for variety shows that share different styles of dance. For example, when working on a piece, I consider the dynamics of the cast, the stage setup, and the transitions between numbers, ensuring everything flows cohesively.
Adapting on the Fly
Choreography is not just about having a set plan; it requires flexibility. Sometimes, the steps I envision don't translate perfectly when teaching them to the cast. That's where adaptability comes in. Knowing the cast’s strengths and weaknesses is crucial, especially in situations where I might not have a say in the casting process. Having access to their reels or social media helps me understand how to tailor the choreography to suit them.
Conclusion
Creating choreography is an intricate process that goes beyond just setting steps to music. It involves a collaboration with a team from the writer/director to the sound and lights. An understanding of the storyline, the cast, and considering external factors like stage conditions. Knowing when to create dynamic moments that fit with the dynamics of the song. Having flexibility/ options to change phrases on the spot and skills in Teaching the choreography you have created.

I encourage fellow dancers and choreographers to share their experiences and methods—there’s so much we can learn from one another.

NAVIGATING LEADERSHIP IN THE ARTS!15 Sep 202600:21:48

Navigating Leadership in the Arts
Insights from Laurin on being a dance and vocal captain
Hey there,
In this episode, Laurin Floyd Turner dives deep into the nuances of leadership within performing arts, particularly focusing on the roles of dance and vocal captains. As someone who balances performance with leadership, Laurin shares invaluable insights on how to maintain integrity and morale in a cast.
The Dual Role of a Leader
Laurin emphasizes the unique challenges faced by captains who are also performers. You're not just responsible for your own performance; you’re also the bridge between the show's vision and the cast's execution. This role requires both logistical management and interpersonal skills to create a safe environment for everyone involved.
Leading by Example
“Respect is earned.”
Laurin highlights that a leader's work ethic sets the tone for the entire group. Being consistently punctual and committed to warm-ups is crucial. If the leader dismisses these elements, they risk losing the respect and trust of their peers.
Handling Negativity
A significant topic is how to diffuse negativity within a cast. Laurin shares her experience with negative energy, encouraging leaders to steer conversations toward positivity.
“The minute you feed into negativity, you compromise your respect.”
She stresses that allowing negative discussions to spiral can create a toxic environment that affects the entire show.
The Long-term Impact of Leadership
Laurin also reflects on how the impressions you leave as a leader can have lasting effects on your career.
“You might come back and be ahead of your own show, and someone could remember how you acted.”
She encourages leaders to build a legacy of positivity and support, which can pay dividends in future collaborations.
Conclusion
As Laurin wraps up her thoughts, she invites listeners to share their own stories and challenges in leadership roles. Whether in the arts or any other field, navigating leadership is a complex but rewarding journey.

If you're currently in a leadership position or aspire to be one, keep these insights in mind to foster a healthy and supportive environment.
Until next time, keep leading with integrity!

AUDITION TIPS! The Pro Secrets to Commanding the Room!08 Sep 202600:22:41

Auditioning isn’t just about talent - it starts the second you walk in the door!
The biggest thing I learned after 30+ years in this business? People are watching how you treat the lobby, the sign-in table, and the room before they even watch your talent.
Be confident, not cocky.
Research who you’re auditioning for.
Wear something that makes you memorable.
And if you can show your real range - vocally, physically, or stylistically - do it.
The safe version of you is usually the one they forget. Also, never forget: you’re auditioning all the time. How you show up can open doors long after the audition is over!

Save this if you’re trying to book more gigs, and tag a performer who needs this reminder!
What’s one audition lesson you had to learn the hard way?

KELLY KING! Manager of East Iris Studios in Nashville29 Jun 202600:38:54
Born and raised in Nashville Tennessee I grew up around music royalty both legendary artists and hit songwriters within the country music genre. Being mentored and having worked with some of the greats such as Brenda Lee, Vince Gill, Dolly Parton, Victoria Shaw and Gary Burr to learning the ropes of the industry at my first ever professional job in publishing when I was 18 years old alongside Jodi Williams at MCA. After being an artist signed to Warner brothers in my late twenties, I decided to shift gears and really steer my efforts in artist development working at management companies in multiple genres (Philymack). Later, independently managing and A&R'ing my own artists who have internationally toured with major label acts such as Pentatonix. Then serving as head of artist development at KYN Entertainment for 2 years. I've learned the skills and have made the connections to take a project from start to finish. I also have seen and studied how tech cultured companies such as Spotify, Tik Tok, Instagram and YouTube have been able to integrate with the consumer in the Pop and Hip-hop genres extremely well. I have a great understanding of these platforms and truly feel I can excel at connecting music consumers and artists directly to these platforms. Artist development has never been more important in music than it is today. True artist development! It allows an artist to find those magical qualities that stand out above the crowd, to hone their craft to an undeniable force, and to connect with their fans on the most real, relatable level. In a time where tech moves so fast, the artists and teams who take their time digging deep and striving for true identity will rise to the top. This is what I believe is not only my greatest strength, but my deepest passion as well.
