In one of the most shocking bits of news to ever come out on Pokémon GO, Bloomberg has reported that Niantic is nearing a deal to sell their games division to Scopely, a Saudi Arabian Publishing house, backed by a Saudi sovereign fund. The article cites no confirmed sources and is as vague as it gets outside of the price tag of 3.5 Billion dollars. There is so much to unpack.
We start off with our weekly recap including Hoopa Unbound Raid Day and Scattered To The Winds. Ken played IRL while Adam played remote, which brought some balance to the world, although Adam felt a bit icky having to pay to play. The Shiny Scatterbug chase has reignited friends lists and people are finally opening their gifts!
We skim through some newly released event details for Unova Tour as well as the announcement of Totodile Community Day Classic. It’s wild to think that Unova Tour info is somewhat of an afterthought in this week’s news cycle. Not surprisingly, the event will be split into Black and White Special Research paths, and will feature new music from Junichi Masuda.
Digging into the Scopely news we would be remiss if we didn’t reiterate that the article does not cite any source. We look to GO Hub who shares some background on the rumored buyer as well as some hot takes on what their community is like. It appears that Scopely games are notorious for being exceptionally micro transaction heavy, with an ad-forward model.This is something that all PGO Trainers should be nervous about.
So what can we do? Not much. We know from experience that Niantic doesn’t comment on anything, let alone rumors of this magnitude. It will be a difficult task to not think the worst, or to not lose motivation to play. Some online have been calling for Niantic to sell PGO for years, but after looking at Scopely’s reputation, they may have got it all wrong.
This is just the tip of the iceberg for this conversation, but we don’t even know the next time we may get an update on it.
We have a busy week in Pokémon GO! With back to back Community Days plus other events throughout the week, there could be some FOMO happening! Greedy Gluttons brings Guzzlord and we have our first Scarlet & Violet crossover with Ghimmighoul from Paldea! Plenty to dig into and chew on in this episode!
This has been a packed week of events, news, and unrest in the Community! Even though the Halloween Event was a hit, it was overshadowed by issues with Bluetooth devices and a less than stellar Dev Diary. We break everything down including our experiences with Dia de Muertos and the current spawn and Raid pools.
The November content update has been announced and unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be a great month, even though we have Guzzlord being released. We don’t think a single Raid boss will be enough to carry the month. Hopefully some of the teased events happening later in the month will come through and save the day!
Finally we Poke The Bear over the Bluetooth debacle and ask how important Bluetooth accessories really are. With first party devices being unavailable at retail, it really adds some spice to the conversation as using third-party autocatchers is considered cheating as they violate the TOS! Another week, another reason for the Community to have strong feelings! After having a rocky launch of Elite Raids, the Zorua Spotlight Hour Surprise crashed and burned by the time it made it out of New Zealand. We discuss how things went wrong and what we would hope would happen as a result! Outside of Zorua, the Halloween Event has been well received and we look forward to the second part of the event this week.
Dia de Muertos will be next up on the calendar as we work our way into November. While we don’t have details on the rest of the month yet, it is interesting that our first event happens smack dab in the middle of the week! We will have to see how the community feels about a 2 day, non-weekend event.
While things are a bit rocky in the state of the game, we can celebrate a new update around stickers! OK, while not really too exciting, it is good to know that QoL updates are still a part of the plan. Finally, we wrap up with a Raid Guide and Battle Party for Origin Forme Giratina which we will have during the rest of the Halloween Event.
We have another packed show this week having a consistent drip feed of event information released over the last week. This is on top of a busy week of gameplay as the Festival of Lights wrapped up and Elite Raids were launched. We had a bit of everything this week.
While Elite Raids looked like an amazing idea on paper, unfortunately their release did not go smoothly in-game. From overloads of locked out gyms, the overlap of Community Day, and technical issues, the Elite Raid launch felt rushed and not thought out. Luckily, the Community is so in favor of the feature that they were pretty level headed and constructive with their feedback. We will sift through some of the best comments we saw.
The Halloween Event is packed with things to do however another bad batch of boxes may keep Trainer activity low. With a huge drop off from the 2021 Halloween boxes, even with Shiny Noibat being locked to 7km eggs, we may not see too many Trainers jumping into the mix this time around.
Finally we run through the upcoming Dia De Muertos event that will be rolling into November. This has typically been a fun event, and time will tell to see if the event lands right with the Community this year.
This was absolutely one of the most fun experiences that I have ever had podcasting! Cricket brought such incredible positivity and energy that I couldn’t help but to take it all in! I had the opportunity to finally meet Krikit in person during GO Fest: Seattle a few months back and I knew that I had to get her on the show!
We talk about her introduction to content and the motivation she had to begin creating! It really speaks to her character as her approach it as real as it gets. One thing I can also say is that the Kriket you get on camera is the same Kriket you get off camera. That authentic vibe is what makes her content so much fun to watch!
As the Evolving Stars event wraps up, many Trainers seem to be relieved as this event didn’t bring too much excitement. While Xerneas was a fun chase, we still have time to hunt it, but the spawns were pretty lack luster. We have a few days of vanilla spawns and then the Festival of Lights comes in, which looks to be a bit better in the Pokémon department.
While Litwick Community Day overlaps with the Festival of Lights, unfortunately the bonuses won’t integrate or stack so we miss out on a potential rock star day of playing. Either way, 3x XP is always fun and a great shiny should bring the Trainers out to play.
The latest Wayfarer Twitter Challenge wraps up this week and we have made our submission! With Wayfarer exclusive rewards, this is a really fun way to promote the tool. Our Wayfarer channels in Discord have been exceptionally active, and the gameboard is getting better every day!
We dig into the 0.251.0 APK mine as there are some really good nuggets to be found. From Halloween themed visuals to new moves and size data, the game seems to be getting more and more refined with each update.
Finally, we gently Poke The Bear with a conversation about the narrative of Pokémon GO and how it seems to always fly under the radar. With Pokémon being so driven by story, we hope to see an improvement with the way PGO delivers that content to us.
The event train rolls on in game as we wrap up Evolving Stars and prepare for the Festival of Lights! With Mega Gyarados Raid Day and Litwick Community Day filling in the gaps, we have a consistent rollout of rotating Pokémon availability.
We have also seen a consistent rollout of Pokémon debuts with Morelul and Shiinotic being next to hit the game. It makes you think that we may be pushing closer and closer to the current release generation in the main series. What will happen when we hit the wall of Pokémon to be released?
