| Mind Your Step | 26 Sep 2022 | 00:15:41 | |
Have you ever been on one of those people movers at an airport? The danger there happens when you go on autopilot and allow yourself to just move along without paying attention to what might be ahead. The people mover always comes to an end at some point and if you don't plan for it, the adjustment can cause a bit of a stumble. Your career can be a bit like that. In today's episode, I talk about how to be proactive instead of reactive, so that you are ready when opportunities arise or disruptions happen. From a practical perspective, it looks like these three things: 1) tracking your accomplishments 2) regularly updating your resume and LinkedIn profile 3) being the CEO of your career If you do these things, you'll be prepared for and be able to take advantage of whatever happens, instead of it taking advantage of you. | How to Tell Your Story | 19 Sep 2022 | 00:14:36
If you're interviewing a lot, but not getting offers, it could be that you're not getting your message across to the degree that you need. Today I want to teach you a framework I created that is going to help you change up your interviews and build up your story. It's an acronym that is especially helpful for those behavioral interview questions: DRAMA. D - Dilemma R - Role A - Action M - Metric/More A - Advantage Listen in as I teach you how to use this framework to help you understand and remember how to share the value you have in a way that's clear, understandable, and meets the needs that a behavioral question is seeking. With this, you'll be able to feel comfortable and authentic, while still getting your message across in a powerful way. Resources: Don't stay in a job that feels bad. | It's Good to Be You | 12 Sep 2022 | 00:20:29
Everything that's created starts with a thought, including the evolution of ourselves. In today's episode, I talk about how you can truly become who you want to be. You could have all the resources in the world -- all the knowledge, courses, and Master's Degrees -- but if your thinking stinks, you're never going to achieve your full potential. Think of your brain like an operating system. 1) Do a "thought download" to identify all the programs running in the background of your mind. 2) Update your operating system with new thoughts that DO serve you 3) Manage your thoughts consistently to keep you on track to the place you want to be. Start your operating system update with this new thought: "I am worthy." You are. Say it to yourself. Allow to it influence your thinking so that you can start to become the person you want to be. What kind of approach do you have when setting a goal for yourself? If it's all just about the goal -- to the point that you won't be happy until you achieve that goal -- all the steps along the way just turn into drudgery and you will be miserable. Ask yourself: What do I want my life to look like as I work toward this? In today's episode, I encourage you to appreciate yourself and celebrate the value and energy you're bringing to the process. There is no reason to wait until after you achieve the goal to give yourself happiness and joy and appreciation. Always look for the good in the process. | You Already Have It | 29 Aug 2022 | 00:20:01
If you're in a job search, you are selling. Everyone is always selling. Consider this: Any time you influence someone's decision, you just participated in selling and marketing. And the reason people are influenced by marketing messages is the same reason you will get hired. In today's episode I'm going to show you why this works, and how you are already effortlessly doing it. A sale is nothing more than a transfer of belief and enthusiasm. So believe in yourself. Believe in your unique value. And believe that your prospective employer will see (and has already seen) your value. Resources: Don't stay in a job that feels bad. | Heroic Interviews | 08 Aug 2022 | 00:13:17
How do you convey your value in an interview? This is an interesting challenge. We are tempted to talk too much, to jam too much information into our answers in an attempt to cover all the bases. This actually has the opposite effect. When you try to be "all the things" all you do is water down your message. So, just how DO you actually get all your value across (and more!) to the person you're talking to? The solution is simple: Curiosity. Seek first to understand, then be understood. - Stephen Covey, the 7 Habits of Highly Effective PeopleThe number one thing you can do to make a lasting impression in an interview is ask questions. Ask questions from a place of curiosity, helpfulness, and understanding. You don't need to be the hero in this conversation. Be the consultant. Be the guide. Listen and ask questions all along the way. Paint a picture about what it's like to work with you. This is so powerful! You WILL stand apart from other candidates, no doubt about that. Have you ever had this thought that if you could just get in front of someone, you know you would do really well in the interview and you could get the job? When you follow the steps I'm outlining today, you're going to have a document that they will want to READ rather than SKIM. So get out your resume and your favorite pen, and follow along as I take you through the components of a compelling resume from top to bottom. Let's open those doors! | Resilience In Any Circumstance | 28 Jun 2024 | 00:17:33
Maintaining resilience is crucial in various aspects of life, including job searches, workplace challenges, and personal growth. To cultivate resilience, it is important to focus on positive aspects and set intentions and expectations. The reticular activating system in the brain also helps in this process. Being curious and asking questions, reframing situations, and identifying what keeps you motivated are effective strategies. Ultimately, prioritizing happiness and creating a fulfilling work life contributes to resilience and overall well-being. "Confidence comes from your thoughts. It doesn't come from experience. It doesn't come from a track record of success. | Start With What You Have | 11 Jul 2022 | 00:14:39
There will always be lack, there will always be "never enough" or "not quite there" when you all you can think about is what's missing. This is a problem! The reason this is a problem is because what's going on in your mind is what you experience in your reality. In today's episode, I talk about the solution to this problem and why you must fix it. When the focus is on what you have -- right now, today -- and the value that you've accumulated over time, what you're doing is you are unlocking things that have been sitting there in your brain waiting to be put to use. - Elissa, LYWL, Ep. 64The human brain is wired by default to look for what's wrong. This is why training your mind is one of the most -- if not THE MOST -- important things you can do to navigate life. When you are intentional with your mindset, your overall message about your value will speak for itself. Acknowledge your accomplishments. Embrace that you are enough and you are worthy. | Make Your Move, Part 2 | 20 Jun 2022 | 00:16:10
How do you springboard from observation into motivation so that it's actually leading you to a better destination? In Part 2 of this 3-part series, I've put together some thoughts on motivation that I want to share with you, and some guidance on how you can create motivation through leverage. At a basic level, our behavior is governed by avoiding pain or gaining pleasure. -Elissa, LYWL, Ep.61Leverage is using both pain and pleasure to create motivation for yourself. Here are few pain/pleasure questions to ask yourself to create this leverage: Pain-associating questions: • “What will this cost me?” • “What has it cost me in the past?” • “What is it costing the people I love?” • “What is it costing me in (lifestyle, opportunity, family, etc.)?” Pleasure-associating questions: • “If I change this now, how will my life be?” • “What will I gain?” • “What will it mean for the people I love?” • “What will it give me?” You can go back to these questions over and over again to maintain the leverage and motivation you've created. Without motivation, none of those amazing plans and goals you've made will really matter. Any kind of meaningful change in your life or in your career is underpinned by motivation. | Move Your Move, Part 1 | 13 Jun 2022 | 00:19:38
The very first step to making your move starts with taking some time to observe your thoughts, your career, and where you are today. In this first part of a three-part series, I'm going to give you tools to help you look for evidence and start changing the meaning you've assigned to your past, so that you can measure it as success instead of measuring it as failure. In doing so, success will become an inevitable part of your future. If you're ready to make your move, start with observing what's going on now, and just in the observation of it, things will start to change. -Elissa, LYWL, Ep.60Resources: Don't stay in a job that feels bad. How does this play into a career journey in the more conventional sense? Let's talk about that, too. | Sell What They're Buyin' | 23 May 2022 | 00:16:05
The reason people hire others is the same reason people buy things. - Elissa, LYWL, Ep. 57 If you're having trouble marketing yourself in interviews, you could have the best resume on the planet and you still won't get job offers. There are two pieces to marketing yourself and today I'm going to walk you through them. First, the three levels of problem-solving: 1) the physical level 2) the emotional level 3) the philosophical level Organize your answers to interview questions in a way that addresses all three levels. Second, the Belief Triad: 1) belief in yourself 2) belief in your value 3) belief in the other person The reason people buy things is because it will make their life easier and better, and the psychology behind hiring is exactly the same. Don't think of marketing yourself as a salesy, inauthentic thing -- it's a way to show someone that by hiring you, you can make their life easier and better. | Manage Burnout | 25 Apr 2022 | 00:23:05
You're doing the things you need to do. You're setting boundaries, you're scheduling activity, obeying your schedule, showing up for yourself with rest and self-care. Why do you still feel burnt out? Our feelings and our bodies often feel the signs of burnout before our brain catches up, so be watching for those little signals. - Elissa, LYWL, Ep. 53Today I'm going to share a few thoughts that I learned from Rob Bell about some other things that could be going on under the surface. 1) The "Something to Prove" Approach - "This is supposed to be hard, otherwise it's not real." 2) The Sense of Obligation - "This is my wheelhouse, I can't look outside of it." 3) The Label - "I need to be associated with -that- industry in order for people to take me seriously." 4) The Ladder - "I've got to do the corporate climb, because that's the thing to do." 5) The "Too Much" Feeling - "I've got to do All The Things, I've got to show up, this is the way it's got to be done." You can notice and manage these signals before they get out of hand so that you can move past those feelings, get out of that mode, and take the action you want to take. I like to refer to these as interview bookends – and most people don’t know how to approach them. “If there are two questions that give people the most heartburn during an interview – it’s the questions that I call the bookends, they are ‘tell me about yourself’ and ‘why should we hire you’. Because of this, it is on us to identify our purpose in our current situation so we don't carry that with us to the next role. As I’ve mentioned before, it’s important to focus on what we can control in our job search. “You don't have any control over whether somebody else shows up for you. It's true that the greatest lessons in life can come from our hardest moments. The most difficult thing to do in those moments is to recognize that they exist to help us get better. Throughout your career, you will experience these moments but it is on you to build the resilience to face them head-on. I want you to feel so good about your career and job search skills that you know that you can weather anything that gets thrown at you. I had to learn career resilience. Let's face it, we've all had opportunities for growth throughout our careers whether we knew it in the moment or not. As you've listened to the show, you've heard me encourage you to focus on those things that are under your own control. It turns out that growth is one of those things. Consistent growth is possible, but not without conscious effort. I'm fond of the statement, "everything I want is on the other side of the next action I take." Not all of the actions. When you suspend judgment about that next action, it allows you to move forward and let things unfold for you. Ideas create more ideas, actions create more actions. This is the law of nature, so take advantage of it! - Elissa Shuck, LYWL EP.39In this episode, you'll discover the 7 steps to achieve career-wide growth. | Qualifications in the Job Search Part 2 - Under-Qualification | 27 Dec 2021 | 00:14:10
We've all felt inexperienced in one way or another, but when you're underqualified on paper, it can be difficult for employers to notice your value and your ability to grow. It's more about understanding what applies and doesn't apply from your previous experience, and then using that to make it easy for a hiring manager to understand your future value. When you think about your transferrable skills, and you start looking for those common threads, the common denominators between what you've done and what you want to do, you will start to feel more secure about it. You've got to connect the dots for yourself before you connect the dots for anyone else. That's how you do it.In this episode, you'll discover how to identify and frame your transferrable skills for a new role. I cover what to look for in job descriptions to uncover inside language, how to leverage your behavioral strengths to stand out, and how to include your accolades in the right way to give the hiring manager that 'ah ha' moment that solidifies you as the right candidate. | Qualifications in the Job Search Part 1 - Over-Qualification | 20 Dec 2021 | 00:12:08
It turns out that reciting your long history of experience isn't the best way for an interviewer to identify if you're the perfect person for a role. As you know from previous episodes, it's more about how you frame what you've done, and more importantly, how you frame what you'll be able to do for a prospective employer. I'm not suggesting that you dumb down your skills, accomplishments, or anything else. What I am suggesting is, in an interview, in these conversations, you [should] apply the concept that it isn't all about you, so the other person sees you as a great candidate.
