🔥 Is Your Mental Health EHR Software SABOTAGING Your Therapy Practice? 🔥

Hey there, fabulous therapists!

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably poured your heart and soul into building your therapy private practice. And let’s face it, managing the business side of things isn’t exactly why we got into this field. But what if I told you that the very tool you rely on for efficient practice management might actually be working against you?

The Shocking Discovery

I recorded a podcast on what happened next and released this in July, BUT since the first version was released I've gained visibility into some new information... and some new developments have unfolded. I am in the process of updating this podcast and video, and will be re-releasing it soon.

#36: Are You OVERSHARING With Your Therapy Clients?02 Oct 202400:23:46

Do you talk about yourself too much in therapy??

Therapists, we’ve all been there. You want to connect with your client, show empathy, and maybe even share a bit of your own story to create that bond. But could your personal anecdotes be doing more harm than good? In today's episode of Love, Happiness, and Success for Therapists, we’re diving into the delicate balance of self-disclosure in therapy. How much is too much, and how do we ensure our personal shares are actually helping, not hurting, our clients' progress?

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering where to draw the line between therapeutic empathy and oversharing, this episode is for you. We'll explore real-life examples where well-meaning therapists let their personal stories take center stage—leading to client disengagement, boundary issues, and even professional consequences.

In this episode, I’ll guide you through:

00:53: The ‘Let’s Talk About Me’ Scenario
When a therapist’s own grief overshadows their client’s healing process—where the session turns from support to storytelling.

02:51: The Fitness Enthusiast's Misstep
How a seemingly helpful share about personal fitness goals left a client feeling inadequate, anxious, and ultimately disconnected.

04:31: Validation Gone Wrong
The dangers of seeking client approval—when a therapist inadvertently puts the focus on their own choices rather than the client’s growth.

05:59: Family Drama in Therapy
What happens when a therapist's overshare about their own relationship problems creates discomfort and confusion for the client.

07:40: The Rise of Life Coaches and Boundaries
How the 'tell-all' culture in amateur coaching differs from the professional standards we as therapists must adhere to.

08:22: Boundaries and Ethical Guidelines: Keeping It Professional
A look at the strict ethical codes (APA, ACA) governing self-disclosure and how to use them to maintain your integrity in practice.

11:37: Potential Pitfalls and Client Retention
Wondering why clients are ghosting or disengaging? It could be your oversharing. Learn how to spot red flags in your own practice.

17:08: Best Practices for Therapists
From seeking consultation to structuring sessions for client feedback, I’ll share actionable steps to ensure your self-disclosure is always in service of the client.

Whether you’re a seasoned therapist or just starting out, maintaining clear, professional boundaries is essential for both client outcomes and your own career longevity. Let’s make sure we’re always showing up in the most helpful, effective way for the people who trust us with their growth.

#7 - Be a Better Therapist: Signs You're Moving Too Fast (or Too Slow)25 Sep 202400:27:10

Something that we are all vulnerable to as therapists can be moving too fast with our clients, or in some cases, moving too slow.

We want to help our therapy clients experience results: healthier relationships, higher self-esteem, more success in their careers, and more contentment in their lives. But when we push them into the deep end of the personal growth pool before they're ready, their progress stalls.

So how can you know if you're moving too fast with a client? And, what are some signs that your client is ready for more of a challenge? That's what we're talking about on this episode of Love, Happiness and Success for Therapists.

I hope it helps you set the pace that's just right for you and your clients. That's when the magic happens!

xoxo,

Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby

#35 Is Your License at Risk? The 5 Ethical Mistakes You’re Probably Making That Could Get You in Trouble18 Sep 202400:39:20

"Is Your Practice a Legal Time Bomb?"

As ethical, caring therapists with the best of intentions, we never set out to cross boundaries or make missteps in our practice. But the truth is, even the most well-meaning therapists can stumble into dangerous territory and even serious ethical violations—often for things we never thought would be an issue… until it’s too late.

We both know you’re a fantastic therapist, but I’d love for you to take a moment and reflect: could there be something in your current process that has the potential to get you in trouble down the road?

In the latest Love, Happiness & Success for Therapists podcast, I’m breaking down the ethical landmines that blow up in therapists’ faces all the time. You may think you’re covering your bases, but these hidden aspects could be the ones that catch you off guard.

👇 Here’s what you think you know—but with a twist 👇

  • You know you shouldn’t abandon clients… but are you unintentionally doing it in ways you’ve never considered?

  • You know your caseload needs managing… but what hidden oversights in documentation could cause a massive issue?

  • You know about boundaries… but what about the subtle boundary crossings that might not seem like a big deal—until they are?

  • You know dual relationships are a no-no… but do you know the sneaky ways these can happen without even realizing it?

  • You’re confident in your scope of competence… but how can you be sure you’re not accidentally stepping out of it without knowing?

💡 Why this matters: No one plans on being grieved or losing their license, but the smallest oversights can create the biggest problems. This episode is about uncovering those hidden risks and making sure you’re truly protected.

If you found this episode helpful, don’t forget to subscribe to this podcast so you never miss out on more tips for growing your practice and protecting your career. And hey, if you know other therapists who could use some help dodging those ethical landmines, share this episode with them!

If you’ve stopped assessing your long-term clients, you’re missing the hidden layers of growth that could transform their journey.

#32: Why Your Therapy Clients Think You're Weird28 Aug 202400:26:12

Did you know that our healthy, appropriate therapeutic boundaries have the potential to cause hurt feelings, emotional barriers, and even ruptures in our relationships with clients? 😬 It’s true! Even though these boundaries are vital for ethical practice, they can leave clients feeling hurt, frustrated, or confused if we’re not handling them with care and intention.

In this episode, I’m diving deep into how therapeutic boundaries for therapists—from declining social media requests to maintaining client autonomy—can unintentionally create emotional distance if we’re not communicating about them properly. I’m sharing strategies to prevent these ruptures by being proactive and transparent about why we set boundaries and how they protect both us and our clients. 💡

By addressing these moments head-on, you can turn potential ruptures into opportunities for connection, trust, and growth. 🙌

You're not alone—and this episode will change the way you handle it.

#23 - Case Note Magic! Making Documentation Quick & Easy19 Jun 202400:27:17

No one becomes a therapist because they love case notes... but it is an important part of the job. And if you don't have a solid strategy, it can feel like the bane of your exsitence. So let's talk about how to make this not-so-fun task a little bit easier!

#22 - When Your Client's Struggles Hit Too Close to Home12 Jun 202400:34:35

As therapists, we know how to put our stuff aside and focus on what our client needs to heal and grow. But how are you supposed to do that when your client is struggling with something that hits too close to home for you?

As a longtime therapist myself, and a clinical supervisor, I know this happens all the time. Therapists are human too. Just like our clients, we also have breakups, and miscarriages, and conflict with loved ones. And we sometimes find ourselves in the strange position of counseling someone who is going through something we're going through ourselves.

It can be emotionally triggering! And the best way to proceed isn't always clear. Sometimes we can practice healthy boundaries and compartmentalize our feelings well enough to remain effective. And sometimes, we're too rattled to continue working with the client ethically.

The next time this happens to you, I want you to feel confident in your ability to handle it. That's why I created this episode of Love, Happiness and Success for Therapists.

Tune in to learn about:

  • 05:31 Navigating Personal Challenges as a Therapist
  • 11:39 The Importance of a Strong Support System
  • 19:01 Empathy vs. Impairment

#20 - How to Have 'The Money Talk' with Therapy Clients29 May 202400:38:46

Are you a therapist who wants to raise your rates, but the prospect of discussing it with new and existing clients makes you think twice? Talking about money with therapy clients can be awkward — but it's a necessary skill that all therapists need to develop, and this episode will show you the way.

#19 - Why Therapists Need to Be Leaders22 May 202400:38:37

One of the most difficult things about being a therapist is the sense of helpless we can feel about helping our clients create positive change. It's true that our clients are the experts on themselves and we can't do the work of growth for them — but I believe we have more opportunities to lead than we realize.

When you embrace your expertise and your role as a leader in therapy, new avenues open up to you. It's the doorway not only to feeling more satisfied with your work, but also to helping your clients in the way they really want to be helped.

On today's episode, we're talking about how you can become a leader in the therapy room, guiding your clients in a positive direction rather than feeling like you have to take a backseat to their process.

Tune in to learn:

  • 00:00 The Impact of Embracing Leadership in Therapy
  • 03:18 The Controversy of Therapists as Leaders
  • 07:56 The Role of Therapists in Providing Guidance

#18: Life Hacks for Therapists: Ending Sessions on Time15 May 202400:30:15

Ending therapy sessions on time... it's something that all therapists have to master. And it can be harder than it sounds! When your client is getting into something important, the last thing you want to do is cut them off.

But drawing that boundary around your time is about more than just running a tight ship around your practice (although that's important, too). It's about creating a safe container in the therapy session and keeping the dynamics of the relationship professional.

So how can you get better at ending your sessions on time, without making your clients feel rushed out? This episode will show you the way! Tune in to learn:

  • 00:00 Why Ending Therapy Sessions on Time Matters
  • 04:26 The Challenges of Ending Sessions on Time
  • 07:16 How Money Factors Into It

#17 - Is It Time to Let Go of the Medical Model?08 May 202400:26:20

Therapist friends, I have some advice — if you are primarily focused on the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions, the future of your career as a therapist is at risk. Moving away from the medical model is the best way to future-proof your career while building a thriving practice. On today's episode, I'm going to tell you why that is and how you can take action.

There are already AI programs that can do much of what we were taught to do in counseling school when it comes to recognizing mental health symptoms and devising treatment plans. And if your business model relies on insurance billing, you should know that insurance companies are already finding ways to avoid paying therapists to do this work.

What does that mean for you? It means it's time to broaden your skillset and your practice to focus on concerns that the medical model was never designed to address: Personal growth, healthy relationships, life satisfaction, goal attainment and career success. Taking this opportunity to move beyond the medical model will help you connect with a wider range of clients, prosper in private practice, and prepare for our new technological reality.

Tune in to learn how. We'll be exploring:

  • 00:00 The Rise of AI in Therapy
  • 03:24 The Impact on Therapists
  • 07:38 The Role of Insurance Companies
  • 09:53 The Power of New Technologies
  • 14:00 The Ethical Dilemma of Insurance Billing
  • 16:23 Pivoting Away from the Medical Model
  • 18:14 The Advantages of Coaching

#16 - Uncovering Your Blindspots: Cultural Competence in Therapy01 May 202400:40:20

All therapists have blindspots, and learning to recognize them is deep personal and professional growth work. It will make you more empathetic, more insightful, and more insightful, not only as a therapist, but also as a human.

But the thing about blindspots is... we can't see them! Uncovering your blind spots to become a more culturally competent therapist is a process of self-exploration that will unearth perspectives and conditioning that you're not even aware of yet. It requires openness and courage, and it strengthens your capacity for self-reflection and connection to others.

That exploratory process is what we're talking about on this episode of Love, Happiness and Success for Therapists. My guest is Dr. Diane Estrada, a veteran of the craft and my long-time mentor. Diane brings so much heart and wisdom to her practice, as well as to her work helping others become the best therapists they can be. She's a treasure, and I'm so excited that I get to share her with you!

#14 - Ethical Dilemmas: When Therapy Clients Refer Their Friends!17 Apr 202400:21:12

When therapy clients refer their friends, it's flattering! It means they value the work you're doing together so much that they want the people they care about to benefit from it too. Could their be a better compliment?

But, when you accept a friend referral from an existing client, things can get weird, fast. This actually happened to me once, and I'm sharing that experience and more on this week's episode of Love, Happiness and Success for Therapists. It will open your eyes to potential pitfalls and ethical grey areas so you don't have to find yourself in the same awkward situation.

On this episode, I'm breaking down why you should think twice before accepting a friend referral from a client, and how to navigate these sticky situations when they arise in a way that leaves both you and your client feeling cared for.

#9 - Should You Start a Private Practice?13 Mar 202400:37:25

Ever think about starting your own private therapy practice? It's an exciting fork in the road — but there are many important issues to think through first!

When I started my own private therapy practice, I had no idea how much work would actually be involved. That's part of why I founded Growing Self Counseling and Coaching — I wanted to create an alternative for therapists who wanted the advantages of private practice, without the common pitfalls, such as:

  • Trouble building and maintaining a caseload
  • Administrative work
  • Billing & Insurance claims
  • Isolation
  • Marketing
  • And more...

But of course, private practice offers many advantages as well. And, there are some alternatives that offer the best of both worlds.

So how can you decide which route is right for you? That's what we're talking about on this episode of Love, Happiness and Success for Therapists.

#8 — How to Stop Working Harder Than Your Therapy Clients!06 Mar 202400:24:05

Have you ever fallen into the trap of feeling like you're working harder than your therapy clients?

I think all clinicians experience this at some point in our careers! It's natural for us to want to see our clients grow, and even to push them along sometimes at a pace they're not quite ready for. #4 - Healthy Boundaries for Therapists07 Feb 202400:29:57

As therapists, we know that healthy boundaries are essential... but when it comes to setting our own boundaries — with clients, with our work, and with ourselves — we can struggle just as much as the people we seek to serve.

Why is setting boundaries as a therapist so hard? First, we put our hearts and souls into what we do for a living! We can't just shut that off when the clock strikes five, and so we continue to feel emotionally engaged with our work outside of our working hours. Depending on our situation, you may even be putting in non-billable hours when you're supposed to be off the clock.

Second, the relationship between therapist and client is an usual blend of personal and professional, which means that maintaining appropriate boundaries requires a lot of thought and intention, more so than in other relationships.

And finally, many of us find ourselves in work environments where healthy boundaries are not encouraged or supported, and going against the grain requires a lot of courage, when it's possible at all.

Despite the challenge, we have to fight for our boundaries. We deserve to have balance, safety, and space to decompress — without that, we're of no use to anyone!

So, how can you create healthy boundaries in your therapy practice? That's what we're talking about on today's episode of "Love, Happiness and Success for Therapists!" I hope you find these ideas helpful, and that they make you feel seen and supported.

xoxo,

Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby

P.S. — I'm sure you're well aware that burnout is a major occupational hazard for us therapists, and having healthy boundaries is a protective factor. But, there are others! Are you heading towards burnout, in other domains? Take this quiz and find out: https://su.vc/flourish

#3 - When to Let Therapy Clients Go31 Jan 202400:31:46

How do you know when to let therapy clients go? This can be a tough call to make! But to practice ethically, we all need to know when to make it. Our mission is to help people grow, heal, and create positive change in their lives. When we can't fulfill that mission, for whatever reason, it's important that we acknowledge that, with compassion and courage.

But sometimes it's not so straight forward. How do you know if your client is making progress? How do you know when you're the right person to help them, and when you're not? That's what we're talking about on today's episode of Love, Happiness, and Success for Therapists.

#2 - How to Stop Thinking About Your Therapy Clients24 Jan 202400:22:56

Ever feel like you can't stop thinking about your therapy clients? So many clinicians struggle with this! It's really a testament to how much we care about the people we serve. Even when we're not in session with them, we're mentally working over their problems and looking for solutions to help them move forward.

But unfortunately, this is not good for us! We need to shut off, mentally decompress, and focus on our own lives when we're not working with clients. This is not only what you deserve, it's how you recharge so that you can do your best work in session. So how can you learn to stop thinking about your therapy clients outside of work?

This episode will show you the way! I'm discussing the skills and strategies that have helped me, as well as the talented clinicians on my team at Growing Self Counseling and Coaching. I hope they'll help you too.
