Dr Kittie Dalton - Ultimate Women's Health Trailblazer who first identified Pre Menstrual Syndrome and Post Natal Depression. We salute you! 23 Apr 202400:45:57

This month’s LWIP hears us interview our first man on the podcast.

This month Sarah and Miriam talk with Dan Dalton, former professional cricketer,  former MEP and wait for it… grandson of an amazing trailblazer in women’s health, Dr Katharina Dalton.

Kittie as she was affectionately known was a woman on a mission.

She was one of the first tranche of female doctors who were admitted to medical school when they opened things up after the Second World War qualifying on the day the NHS came into existence in 1948.

Great friends with Miriam’s grandmother, Kittie was the first to identify and coin the phrases Post Menstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Post Natal Depression (PMD) publishing on these topics back in the 1950s with quite some pushback from the masculine medical establishment.

She successfully treated many women for conditions that the masculine model of health did not understand, from migraines to mood disorders, tuning into the importance of glucose management and even getting women off murder charges because of where they were in their hormonal cycle. AMAZING!

She was a force to be reckoned with whose work was somewhat sidelined by the establishment and which we now want to bring into the light by hearing her story and celebrating her as our first post-humous Ultimate Women’s Health Role Model Award winner.

A fascinating story and a great foundation setter for the work we need to do with our beyond bikini medicine campaign.

Enjoy listening and share your feedback in the comments.

Negative inner chatter vs connecting to a deeper 'inner knowing'25 Mar 202400:14:31

This week the Loose Women in Pharma discuss how negative inner chatter can hold us back. Miriam has read (another) book (of course she has!) and Sarah has been out of her comfort zone in a spin class😱. As they adventure into another growth mindset topic, they realise that they both have different ways of quietening negative inner chatter and tapping into a deeper 'sense of knowing', or ‘feeling', which is where we can live our most joyful life and tap into a world of endless possibilities☀️

Women spend 25% more of their lives in poor health compared with men. But does it have to be this way?19 Mar 202400:55:37

Liz Sergeant is a former Woman in Pharma and Founder of the Well Nourished Club. Now she works with individuals and corporates to help women optimise their health, energy, wellbeing and performance. And who doesn’t need that in their life?

In this episode of Loose Women in Pharma, Miriam and Sarah discover so much about:

  • Functional medicine and functional nutrition
  • Liz’s own journey from high achiever, to superwoman to HPA axis dysfunction
  • The difference between tests for optimal health and what medicine typically looks at in diagnosing disease
  • The relationship between stress and blood glucose
  • The role of oestrogen dominance and a host of menstrual symptoms
  • The stress response and ‘leading yourself’
  • Why most people don’t need to live with IBS symptoms
  • AND why women often live with symptoms that they are told are ‘normal', but they actually have the power to change - if only they knew how

If you ever suffer from heavy periods, painful periods, low mood, anxiety, cycle-related loss of confidence, breakouts or headaches, or if you are experiencing peri-menopausal symptoms, this podcast is a must-listen. What woman HASN’T experienced these things?

Check out Liz’s company; The Well Nourished Club here https://wellnourishedclub.com/about/

Liz is offering listeners of this podcast 10% off her Women’s Health Assessments. She says:

"These are the perfect place to start driving into the root cause. These readings and the 1-to-1 session we’ll have together are designed for women looking for professional insight into what’s going on from a health & hormones perspective, followed by priority next steps and bespoke supplements. As part of an assessment we include the analysis of blood markers against functional health ranges - these blood test results can be from a GP practice or we can order them privately. It is my pleasure to offer the WIP podcast listeners 10% off the package - just use code ‘WIPpodcast' at checkout. Women in Pharma Role Model Awards18 Mar 202400:14:57

Woo-hoo! It’s the day after the very first Women in Pharma Role Model awards and Miriam and Sarah are still buzzing!

The pom-poms are out!!!They reflect on the last 24 hours, including their attendance at the @PMSociety Awards and the conversations with male allies who are asking 'what can we do to help women rise in our organisations?'

One thing male allies can do is read 'How Women Rise by @Sally Helgesen and @Marshall Goldsmith. This book is the next step from  ‘What Got You Here Won’t get you There’, which is a great book.

"How Women Rise' looks at the 12 habits holding women back and how they behave differently to men in the workplace.

Episode 6: What the heck is bidirectional mentoring?29 Jun 202300:51:49

In a rapidly changing world we have plenty to learn from those who are less experienced than us, or working in a different discipline. In this episode of Loose Women in Pharma, we chat with Kaya Patel and Kat Gridley about how mentoring doesn’t need to be a one way street, with experience passing from a more experienced person to a less experienced one. In fact, a two way mentoring relationship can help both parties grow - and can have some surprising upsides!

Women in Pharma is running a bi-directional mentoring pilot project. If you are interested to hear more, please contact Artie via email on artie@womeninpharma.network

Re-framing challenges as opportunities08 Jun 202300:18:14

Things don’t always go to plan. But when we are thwarted at every turn, how can we open our mind to see new possibilities? Miriam and Sarah, discuss how power of mindset can help overcome challenges and help improve over all wellbeing.

Miriam offers up a personal anecdote that shows when you are determined to reframe, reframe and never give up on the reframe you will be rewarded!

Episode 5: Why all Women in Pharma need a coach30 May 202300:59:50

This month the Loose Women in Pharma get under the bonnet of coaching. What it is. How it can help. How coaching is different to mentoring. What bi-directional mentoring is. And how coaching can help women working in the pharma industry and the agencies that serve it.

Agency coach, Louisa Pau, explains how her own burnout experience was a wake-up call that now fuels her passion for coaching others. From the industry side, Miriam Kenrick talks about her unexpected journey to becoming a coach inside the pharma company she works for.

If you are running about like superwoman; a hero at work and a hero at home, discover how the power of coaching could help you have your greatest impact in the world, in a more sustainable way, without burning out. After all work-life balance is a delusion. There is only life.

Live from the Women’s Health Innovation Summit30 May 202300:12:18

Miriam and Sarah report live from the very first Women’s Health Innovation Summit in the UK. From Professor Dame Lesley Regan to Carolyn Harris MP to a whole range of femtech entrepreners and investors, they have been inspired by women shaking up the system to improve health for women and the whole of society.

Queen energy10 May 202300:07:31

On the Bank Holiday after the Coronation we are inspired to explore the power of 'Queen Energy’ in our lives. This is one of five power types that all women can tap into as an alternative to Superwoman - you know her, stressed, juggling like crazy, putting everyone’s needs before her own on the brink of burnout and not showing up as the woman she really is. We have all met her, worked with her and probably been her.

What’s your favourite neurotransmitter?14 Apr 202300:13:44

After the replenishing Easter weekend Sarah and Miriam discuss dopamine.

Dopamine is typically associated with pleasure and reward. But, inspired by Andrew Huberman’s recent podcast on how dopamine can be used to optimise effort and overcome procrastination, they explore how they both use the power of dopamine for motivation and drive in their work lives.

Listen to discover how dopamine is part of the Tiny Habits methodology (Miriam is a Tiny Habits coach) and how Sarah used the power of dopamine at work this week to zip through a big piece of work - and had a lot of fun at the same time!

If you are a science geek and have a couple of hours to spare while you are pottering about, get your headphones in and listen to the podcast yourself. The Huberman Lab podcasts are a favourite of ours - when we have the time They are quite long!
