Heated Rivalry Episode 6 Part 3: The end of the secret08 Mar 202600:49:55

Declan and Silvan reach the final part of our deep dive into Episode 6 of Heated Rivalry.

After Shane’s Father discovers Shane and Ilya together, the episode shifts into one of the most emotionally powerful sequences of the series. We unpack Shane’s spiral, the quiet but powerful support Ilya provides, and the tense dinner that turns into something far more meaningful.

At the centre of this episode is the heartbreaking and healing conversation between Shane and his mother. We talk about the weight of internalised shame, the experience of trying to be someone you’re not, and why Yuna’s apology is such a profound moment for so many queer viewers. For many people, this scene represents the conversation they wish they could have had, or still hope to have one day.

We also explore the body language in the family dinner scene, the humour woven into tense moments, Ilya finally being welcomed into Shane’s family and the emotional significance of someone being able to pull Shane out of his panic spiral.

Beyond the episode itself, we reflect on why representation like this matters, how queer characters have historically been portrayed in media, and why Heated Rivalry feels different.

Finally, we wrap up our rewatch of Season 1 by reflecting on the journey of Shane and Ilya. We want to thank everyone who has joined us for the podcast so far.

It’s definitely not the end of the podcast, because we are starting a book club, beginning with Game Changers. Please join our fable Book club for free so we can read Game Changers together. Heated Rivalry Explained by a Trauma Therapist: Part 122 Mar 202601:09:42

In part one of this special two-part episode of Long Game: A Heated Rivalry Podcast, Declan and Silvan are joined by trauma therapist and comedian Eliza to unpack why Heated Rivalry feels so emotionally intense. Together, we explore the obsession, attachment, longing, and emotional pull that has made the show so impossible to stop thinking about.

From ADHD hyperfixation and dopamine hits, to yearning, restraint, masculinity, and queer joy, this episode digs into the psychology of why the story lands so deeply for so many people. Eliza brings both her therapist lens and her sharp sense of humour to the conversation. We reflect on the artistry of the adaptation, the emotional intelligence of the writing, and the way the show trusts its audience.

We also get into attachment styles, emotional suppression, the role of hockey culture and toxic masculinity, and why Shane, Ilya, Scott, and Kip all resonate in such different ways. Plus, a brief detour into sad songs, gym motivation, and why sometimes a scene from Heated Rivalry works like emotional “charcuterie.”

This is part one of the conversation. In part two, we go even deeper into trauma, defence mechanisms, and humour.

The next episode of the podcast will be published on Sunday 29th March at 10am (GMT).

How Trauma Shapes Heated Rivalry: Part 229 Mar 202601:07:25

In part two of the trauma focused episode, Declan and Silvan continue their discussion with trauma therapist and comedian Eliza, going deeper into the emotional and psychological layers of Heated Rivalry.

This episode explores how trauma shapes the way Shane and Ilya relate to each other, from minority stress and emotional suppression to dissociation, control, attachment wounds, and defence mechanisms. Together, we unpack the difference between intensity and intimacy, the role of trauma in sexual relationships, and why seemingly messy dynamics can still hold genuine care, trust, and emotional growth.

We also talk about aftercare, power and control, how humour works as a release of tension, and the ways vulnerability and comedy are intertwined throughout the show. Along the way, the conversation expands into therapy, transference, emotional safety, and what each character might look like in the therapy room.

It’s a thoughtful, funny, and nuanced deep dive into what Heated Rivalry gets so right about trauma, connection, and healing, and why the show continues to invite so much analysis from its audience.

Book Club: Game Changer Part 1 - Our First Impressions (Heated Rivalry)05 Apr 202601:04:34

Welcome to the first episode of our book club. Declan and Silvan dive into the Game Changer, the book by Rachel Reid that started off the whole book Heated Rivalry series and introduced Scott and Kip.

Coming to the story from a TV-first perspective, we explore what it feels like to read Game Changers with the show still fresh in mind. We talk about the challenge of separating the book versions of these characters from their on-screen counterparts, and how adaptation can both lose and elevate different parts of a story.

We discuss our first impressions of book Scott and Kip, including how differently Scott comes across on the page, why aging him up in the show was such a smart creative decision, and how Kip feels especially relatable as a young man trying to figure out life after university. We also get into the pacing of the book, the portrayal of romance and intimacy, and whether the show strengthens certain characters and conflicts in ways that make the story feel more emotionally compelling.

Along the way, we reflect on what works so well in the adaptation, what feels more effective in the book, and why comparing the two versions is so interesting when they are telling almost the same story in very different ways.

This is part one of our Game Changers discussion, covering the first half of the book up to chapter 15. In part two, we’ll return to the second half and see whether our thoughts change once the full story unfolds. We also share more about our Fable book club, so if you’re reading along with us, this is the perfect place to jump in.

The next episode of the podcast will be published on Sunday 12th April at 10am (GMT).

Book Club: Game Changers Part 2 - Conflicts and Consequences (Heated Rivalry)12 Apr 202600:42:21

In Part 2 of our Game Changers book club series, we dive into the second half of the novel (Chapters 16 to the end). This is where the tension finally breaks, the relationship is tested, and the cracks we’ve been anticipating start to show.

We unpack the long-awaited conflict between Scott and Kip and discuss if it was it worth the build-up, or did it fall flat? We talk about pacing issues and repetitive intimacy to the emotional payoff (or lack of it), we get honest about what worked and what didn’t. We also explore the deeper dynamics at play: Kip’s passivity, Scott’s emotional blind spots, and whether their resolution feels earnest or just rushed.

There’s lot of debate, including whether a certain moment crosses the line into cheating, and why no one seems to be talking about it. We also reflect on themes of communication, agency, and what makes a relationship feel genuinely satisfying on the page.

We highlight the moments that do land, such as Scott’s character growth to the epilogue that left us smiling  and discuss how this book sets the foundation for the wider series.

We wrap up with our final ratings, thoughts on Rachel Reid’s writing at this stage in the series, and whether Game Changers is a strong starting point for the Heated Rivalry universe.

Let us know, did you love Game changers?

Beyond the Game: Masculinity & Mental Health in Sport Part 119 Apr 202600:55:52

In this episode of the podcast, Silvan and Declan are joined by special guest Lizzy, who is a college athletics coach, former competitive thrower, and co-host of the Shelf aware Podcast, for a conversation about masculinity, sport, and emotional expression.

Drawing on her lived experience as both an athlete and a coach working closely with young men in sport, Lizzy offers an insider perspective on the pressures, expectations, and unspoken rules that shape male athletes. We explore how environments like hockey and elite sport more broadly, rewarding emotional suppression, reinforce narrow definitions of masculinity and often leave little room for vulnerability.

We also unpack the contrasting ways characters like Shane and Ilya navigate these pressures, linking their behaviours to real-world dynamics in coaching, team culture, and performance psychology. Our conversation moves between theory and lived experience, touching on concepts like anxiety and performance, the role of coaches as emotional role models and the long-term impact of treating athletes as commodities rather than people.

Lizzie also reflects candidly on her experience as a woman coaching in a male-dominated space, highlighting the challenges and the unique opportunities to shift culture.

This is part one of a two-part discussion, so be sure to tune in next week for part two for more analysis.

Masculinity and Sport in Heated Rivalry: Part 226 Apr 202601:00:37

Declan and Silvan are joined by Lizzy from the Self aware podcast in  Part 2 of this special discussion on masculinity and sport in Heated Rivalry. In this episode, we explore the emotional cost of elite athletic culture through the lens of Shane, Ilya and Scott.

Building on last week’s episode, the conversation moves beyond performance and into identity, intimacy, and emotional survival. We question why physical closeness between male athletes encouraged, while emotional vulnerability feels almost impossible. We explore why can Shane and Ilya fight, joke, and touch each other with ease and yet struggle to actually say how they feel.

Drawing on her experience coaching young male athletes, Lizzy breaks down how sport teaches men to process emotion through aggression, competition, and physicality, while often neglecting emotional awareness altogether. Together, we discuss everything from performance anxiety and coping strategies to toxic competitiveness, role models, therapy in sport, and the psychological differences between Shane’s controlled overthinking and Ilya’s instinct-driven intensity.

Heated Rivalry Book Review: Part 1 - First Impressions03 May 202601:14:50

In this episode of the podcast, Declan and Silvan dive into the Heated Rivalry book. Covering the first eight chapters, we begin a multi-part deep dive into how the original story compares to the TV adaptation, and whether the book lives up to the hype.

Coming to the story from two very different perspectives, Declan as a longtime reader and Silvan as a first-time book reader shaped by the show, our conversation explores first impressions, biases, and the challenge of separating beloved on-screen portrayals from the source material.

We unpack the book’s bold opening, its heavy focus on physical intimacy, and whether the pacing works when read as a standalone versus part of a larger duology. Along the way, we explore key differences in characterisation

Our discussion also gets into adaptation choices: what the TV show adds, what it elevates, and what gets lost in translation. Expect thoughtful critique, a bit of gay panic analysis, and plenty of debate about writing choices, tropes, and what makes this story resonate so strongly with fans.

Heated Rivalry Book Review: Part 2 - Vegas 10 May 202601:17:39

In part two of our Heated Rivalry book review series, Declan and Silvan dive deeper into the emotional chaos, yearning, and tension that turns Shane and Ilya’s relationship from a physical rivalry into something far more dangerous. What started as criticism in part one quickly becomes obsession as the pair unpack chapters 9–11 of and realise this is where the story truly finds its rhythm.

We discuss Ryan Price’s introduction and the early exploration of anxiety and mental health and Ilya’s protective instincts and the complicated relationship he has with his father.

We explore why Ilya might be the most psychologically complex character in the series, how trauma and perfectionism shape his behaviour, and why the TV adaptation deepened certain emotional beats even further.

Our conversation also unpacks the infamous Vegas scene, the shifting power dynamics between Shane and Ilya, and the subtle ways intimacy is portrayed differently in the books versus the TV show.

Plus, we discuss Rachel Reid’s bonus Ilya POV chapter, why it completely changes the tone of the Vegas encounter, and how it reveals just how heartbreakingly in love Ilya already is.

Along the way, there’s discussion of Hudson and Connor’s rising fame, future season predictions for the show, emotional communication failures, improvised TV moments that made fans lose their minds, and why the “we didn’t even kiss” text still hurts.

Heated Rivalry Book Review: Part 3- Tuna Melt 17 May 202601:22:58

Declan and Silvan dive into Part 3 the Heated Rivalry book review. We finally reach one of the most emotionally charged turning points in Shane and Ilya’s relationship and we had a lot to say about it.

From the aquarium scenes with Hayden and the subtle hints about Shane’s fears around family, to the infamous penthouse chapter, ginger ale, tuna melts, and one devastating use of first names, we unpack how Rachel Reid uses intimacy, domesticity, and even sex itself as storytelling devices.

We explore how these chapters shift Shane and Ilya from “hookups” into something far more vulnerable, and why Shane’s panic feels so heartbreaking once you understand what’s really going on underneath it all.

We also discuss queer identity, denial, internalised shame, reclaiming slurs, chosen futures, and how the TV adaptation changes and deepens the emotional beats from the book.

Plus, Declan goes on an anti-pickle rant, we accidentally term the phrase “tuna spit,” and we somehow end up talking about Shakespeare in the middle of all of it.

This episode covers chapters 12 onward and sets the stage for one of the most painful stretches of the book.

The next episode of the podcast will be published on Sunday 24th May at 10am (GMT).

Heated Rivalry, Fan Fiction & AO3: Part 124 May 202601:23:55

Silvan is joined by special guest Jenn from The Book Refuge for a deep dive into the passionate world of Heated Rivalry fandom, fan fiction, and the phenomenon of AO3.

Jenn shares her journey into fan fiction culture, including how Heated Rivalry became one of the biggest fandoms on AO3. We unpack why these characters inspire such devotion, what makes romance adaptations so emotionally powerful when done well and why fandom spaces can feel both deeply creative and deeply personal.

Together we explore what AO3 actually is and how it works, why Heated Rivalry lends itself so perfectly to fan fiction, the blurred lines between authorship, creativity, and community and the legal and ethical complexities surrounding fan works.

If you are a longtime AO3 reader or someone hearing the term for the first time, this episode is a fascinating exploration of why people become so attached to fictional characters why Shane and Ilya continue to resonate so deeply with fans around the world.

The next episode of the podcast will be published on Sunday 31st May.

Heated Rivalry Fan fiction Part 2: Angst, Tropes & Emotional Damage31 May 202601:36:57

Declan and Silvan are joined by Jenn from the Book Refuge for Part 2 of our Fan fiction and AO3 episode. We go deeper into the world of AO3 and fancition.

We cover tags such as hurt/comfort and soulmate Alternate Universess to secret marriages, social media disasters, and the infamous plane crash fic. Jenn guides us through the stories that have captured the Heated Rivalry fandom's imagination. We explore why readers are drawn to angst, whether suffering makes a love story more meaningful and how fanfiction allows us to revisit beloved characters in entirely new ways while keeping the original story intact.

We also unpack the difference between canon, fanon, and headcanon, discuss why some fanfiction can successfully transition into traditionally published novels while others lose the very thing that made them special and debate what makes readers emotionally invest in a story in the first place.

Jenn puts us to the test with a fanfiction recommendation game, where we rank a selection of Heated Rivalry fanfics based only on their summaries. Some are romantic, some are chaotic, some are surprisingly emotional and a few leave us wondering what exactly we've gotten ourselves into.

This episode is a celebration of fandom creativity, storytelling, and the many ways readers keep Shane and Ilya's story alive long after the final page.

The next episode of the podcast will be published on Sunday 7th June.

Heated Rivalry Book Review: Part 4 - Rose07 Jun 202600:50:56

Declan and Silvan dive into Part 4 of our Heated Rivalry book review series. This is one of the most important introductions in the entire story, Rose.

We compare Rachel Reid's novel with the TV adaptation, and explore why Rose feels different on the page versus on screen. I’m e discuss how Sophie Nélisse's performance elevated the character and why Shane and Rose's relationship serves such an important purpose in Shane's journey toward self-acceptance.

Along the way, we unpack the idea of "meeting the right woman," reflect on our own experiences of questioning identity, and discuss how both the book and show portray the pressure to follow a traditional path before embracing who you really are.

We also spend time breaking down the club scene, from wardrobe choices and celebrity culture to the emotional tension between Shane and Ilya. Does Shane and Rose's whirlwind romance feel longer than it actually is? We dfiscuss if Rachel Reid missed an opportunity to explore Shane's perspective more deeply during one of the story's most pivotal moments.

This episode is packed with character analysis, adaptation comparisons, personal reflections, and plenty of tangents about dancing, fashion, skinny jeans, and why Rose remains one of the most beloved characters in the Heated Rivalry universe.

The next episode of the podcast will be published on Sunday 14th June.

Heated Rivalry Book Review: Part 5 - A Problem You Can Solve21 Jun 202600:52:13

In Part 5 of our Heated Rivalry book club series, Silvan is joined by special guest Alicia, long-time listener and book club member. Together, we unpack Shane’s honest conversation with Rose and the realisation that the future he imagined for himself may not be the one he truly wants.

Our discussion explores the differences between the book and the TV adaptation, from Rose’s role in Shane’s journey of self-discovery to the introduction of Svetlana and the ways both versions of the story handle friendship, family, and identity. Silvan and Alicia also dive into the subtle emotional beats of Ilya’s perspective, examining the heartbreak, longing, and misunderstandings that shape the reunion in Tampa.

Along the way, Alicia brings a unique perspective as a Spanish reader who chose to read the novels in English, leading to a fascinating conversation about language, translation, immigration, and how cultural identity shapes both Shane and Ilya’s experiences.

Heated Rivalry Book Review: Part 7 - Shane’s glasses and the skype call05 Jul 202600:59:01

Declan and Silvan go deeper into our Heated Rivalry deep dive in Part 7. We unpack one of the novel's most intimate and emotionally revealing chapters. What begins with a simple Skype call quickly becomes something far more significant, as Shane and Ilya move beyond physical attraction into a longing for domesticity, comfort, and a shared everyday life.

We explore why Shane's glasses become such an unexpectedly powerful symbol, the psychology behind long-distance relationships, love languages, and the growing emotional vulnerability between two men who are trying desperately not to fall in love. We also compare Rachel Reid's novel with the TV adaptation, discussing Ilya's relationship with his father, complicated grief, and why the show adds new emotional layers to his character.

We debate whether Shane's past experiences with other men strengthen or weaken the story, examine the subtle dom/sub dynamic developing between the pair, and ask what it really means to crave someone's presence more than their body.

The conversation drifts into pop culture, internet boyfriends, glasses becoming unexpectedly attractive, and why being someone's weighted blanket might just be the ultimate love language.

This is the quiet calm before everything changes.

Heated Rivalry Book Review: Part 6 - Coming out28 Jun 202601:15:06

Declan and Silvan unpack Part 6 of the Heated Rivalry novel. Here, Shane finally says the words he's spent years avoiding, and everything between him and Ilya begins to change. We examine one of the novel's biggest emotional turning points as Shane comes out to Ilya, leading to a conversation that's surprisingly understated and deeply significant. We explore why Rachel Reid's character writing feels so authentic, how the TV adaptation chooses what to keep (and what to reinvent), and why this moment marks a new stage in Shane and Ilya's relationship.

We also dive into Ilya's devastating family story, discussing the quiet reveal of his mother's death, his father's Alzheimer's, and how grief, trauma and emotional masking shape the person he becomes. Along the way we compare the novel with the TV series, debate Jacob Tierney's adaptation choices, and explain why Connor Storrie's unforgettable Russian monologue may be one of the show's finest moments.

Heated Rivalry Book Review: Part 8 - I’m coming to the Cottage12 Jul 202600:56:56

Declan and Silvan dive into Part 8 of the Heated Rivalry book review.

We explore how Rachel Reid uses crisis as the catalyst for emotional growth in Shane’s injury. We compare the novel with the TV adaptation, unpack why Shane and Ilya react so differently in each version, and discuss the psychology behind fear, avoidance, and the moment Ilya realises he cannot walk away.

As always, we go off on a few tangents, like why third-act breakups frustrate us, whether redemption after cheating can ever work in romance, and how therapists naturally gravitate towards different characters. We also reflect on why finding the right therapist matters, how sensory memories shape our emotions, and why Shane's relationship with hockey changes as his life evolves.

We finally reach one of the most iconic moments in the series, Scott and Kip's iconic kiss. We talk about why this scene carries so much emotional weight, what it means for Shane and Ilya's future, and why a single act of courage can create hope for everyone who follows.

Heated Rivalry Book Review: Part 10 - Eight Burgers, One Loon & One Huge Revelation (Chapter 24)26 Jul 202600:59:33

Declan and Silvan are at The Cottage in Part 10 of our Heated Rivalry book review.

We unpack one of the funniest chapters in the novel, from eight burgers and "stupid Canadian wolfbird" to the effortless comedy Rachel Reid gives Ilya throughout these scenes. Beneath the laughter lies one of the book's most important emotional turning points.

We explore Shane's hesitation about coming out, what it means for Ilya to feel like a secret and how Rachel Reid captures the complicated balance between love, fear and vulnerability. We also compare these moments with Jacob Tierney's television adaptation, discussing why certain scenes feel even more powerful on screen and how subtle changes in body language transform the emotional impact.

The conversation also dives into Ilya's lifelong role as a caretaker, the heartbreaking story of his mother, and why we found ourselves wanting even more of his perspective during these pivotal moments. Along the way, we debate whether Heated Rivalry is ultimately Shane's story or whether Ilya deserves more narrative space.

Plus, we share our thoughts after our first Belfast listener meetup and thank everyone who came along to make it such a memorable day.

Heated Rivalry Book Review: Part 9 - Rimmedgate19 Jul 202600:49:12

Declan and Silvan break down the start of Shane and Ilya’s cottage escape in Part 9 of our Heated Rivary Book review. This week we are joined by Bri, who is a long-time listener of the podcast.

Together, we explore why this chapter feels like such a turning point in their relationship, from the emotional significance of Shane inviting Ilya into his most personal space to the honesty, vulnerability and quiet intimacy that begin to replace years of secrecy.

We also discuss Scott Hunter's impact on Shane and Ilya's future, the differences between Rachel Reid's novel and the TV adaptation, and why the later chapters of Heated Rivalry showcase some of Reid's strongest writing.

As always, the conversation takes plenty of unexpected detours, including nostalgic pop culture references, discussions about Rachel Reid's brilliant blend of romance, humour and spice and one surprisingly passionate debate that inspired the title of the podcasrt episode. This has us questioning whether one particular scene in the book is actually believable.

Heated Rivalry Book Review: Part 11 - The infamous BJ02 Aug 202600:56:34

Declan and Silvan break down the Heated Rivalry book review in part 11. We dive into one of the most talked-about chapters and it is every bit as steamy as its reputation suggests.

We explore how Rachel Reid balances intimacy with emotional depth, discussing why these scenes feel so much more than just spice. From playful video game rivalry and unforgettable chemistry to conversations about consent, vulnerability and communication, we unpack what makes this chapter such a turning point for Shane and Ilya.

We also compare the book with the TV adaptation, looking at the emotional weight behind Ilya's fears, Shane's growing certainty, and the subtle differences that completely change how key moments land. Along the way, we discuss masculinity, queer relationships, hookup culture, and why Rachel Reid's writing continues to evolve as the novel progresses.

We reach one of the most emotional milestones in the entire story as Shane and Ilya finally say the words readers have been waiting years to hear. We break down the meaning behind their confession, the heartbreaking conversation about Ilya's mother, and why this chapter perfectly captures the blend of humour, tenderness and emotional honesty.

Heated Rivalry Book Review: Part 12 - Getting Caught16 Aug 202601:14:33

Declan and Silvan finally reached that chapter.

In Part 12 of our Heated Rivalry deep dive, we tackle Chapter 26, and despite our best intentions, manage to spend an entire episode on just one chapter.

We start with the newly announced Season 2 casting and the conversation surrounding Harris, body representation and the expectations fans bring to adaptations. Then it’s back to the cottage, where Shane and Ilya are happier, more open and more in love than we’ve seen them before. Right up until David catches them together on the dock.

We unpack how differently this pivotal moment plays out in the book and TV series, why the adaptation gives Shane’s reaction so much more emotional weight, and what it means for him to have his choice about coming out suddenly taken away. We also look at Shane’s parents’ reaction, Ilya being introduced as his “lover”, the importance of Scott Hunter’s story, and the beautifully understated moment when Shane finally gets to call Ilya his boyfriend.

We discuss Rachel Reid’s growth as a writer, whether Ilya fell in love first, Shane’s relationship with control, queer relationships moving fast, why you should never abandon your friends for a new partner, and whether Declan should read The Count of Monte Cristo live on TikTok.

One chapter. One hour. We regret nothing.

Scarlett Drake on Writing Oleander: Behind the MM Romance Phenomenon09 Aug 202601:13:57

Declan and Silvan are joined by one of the most talked-about voices in MM romance.

In this special interview, we're joined by bestselling author Scarlett Drake to discuss the phenomenal success of Oleander, her haunting queer reimagining of Great Expectations.

Scarlett shares the twelve-year journey that took her from posting fanfiction on Wattpad to becoming one of the genre's most celebrated independent authors, and how self-publishing changed her life.

We take a deep dive into Oleander, exploring the inspiration behind the novel, its gothic atmosphere, the symbolism of the title, and the complex relationship between Jude and Cas. Scarlett opens up about writing morally complicated characters, depicting trauma responsibly, and why she believes Cass deserves empathy despite his flaws. We also discuss readers' divided reactions to the ending, the challenges of adapting classic stories for a modern queer audience, and the lasting influence of The Song of Achilles and A Little Life.

Scarlett also gives us an exciting first look at her next project: a dark, gothic MM retelling of a popular classic. We chat about her writing process, visualising scenes like films, balancing creativity with a day job, and her advice for aspiring authors hoping to publish their own stories.

There may be some spoilers when discussing the characters, so join us for a insightful conversation with Scarlett.

The next episode of the Long Game podcast will be released on Sunday 16th August 2026.
