Cam Ward threw for 321 yards and three touchdown passes in his Miami debut, leading the 19th ranked Hurricanes to a statement-making 41-17 road win over the Florida Gators. 

The blowout win put an emphatic end to the Gators' 33-game win streak in their home openers, dating all the way back to 1991. 

The 41 points put up by Miami is the most the Gators have allowed in a home opener in the history of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, aka The Swamp. 

The Hurricanes put up 500+ yards of offense. Ward, the senior transfer QB from Washington St, completed 26-35 passes for 385 yards, including scoring tosses to Cam McCormick, (9 yds) Xavier Restrepo, (24 yds) and Jacolby George. (23 yds) 

Ward is so good and has such a great command on the field that he is making Hurricanes fans so much hope that they might (finally) have another great QB at Quarterback U. They might be right. 

Restrepo led Miami with 7 catches for 112 yards and the TD. 

Damien Martinez, who transferred from Oregon St, ran for 65 yards on 15 carries for Miami. Mark Fletcher, Jr added two rushing touchdowns.

The Hurricanes dominated up front, with both the offensive and defensive lines asserting their will against the Gators all afternoon. 

Miami safety Mishael Powell picked off Mertz and ran it back 67 yards to set up another score. 

Mertz, a preseason awards contender, finished with just 91 yards passing before being knocked out of the game on a hit when he threw an interception.

Montrell Johnson Jr ran for 106 yards for the Gators, but most of that came on his 71-yard TD scamper in the second quarter. 

The Miami defense was outstanding for the entire game, holding the gators to 17 points and just 261 yards of offense. 

The Hurricanes got the ball to start the second half, and went right down the field to score a touchdown and make it 31-10. 

The six-play, yard drive was a thing of beauty, with Ward hitting big passes to Restrepo and Fletcher, Jr, who took it in from a yard out for his 2nd score of the day. 

Miami will definitely be a problem for teams this season. The Canes are looking to make the twelve-team playoff and compete for their first national championship since 2001.

The Miami Hurricanes are looking to build championship level depth. Miami is expected to boast one of the top defensive lines and offensive lines in America. Freshman defensive tackle Justin Scott was recently named to the On3 Sports Preseason Freshman All-American Team. The running back room is well stocked with playmakers like Damien Martinez, Mark Fletcher and Chris Johnson. Jordan Lyle was also named to the On3 preseason freshman team. The Hurricanes are the only team in the ACC returning three wide receivers with at least 800 receiving yards last season.

Miami Hurricanes running back commit Girard Pringle started his senior season of high school on a strong note. The Class of 2025 tailback fueled his Armwood HS team to a dominant victory over Miami Norland. Pringle rushed for well over 100 yards with 2 touchdowns and was named MVP of the game. The 8th rated running back in the class will be arriving at the University of Miami in 2025. He offered his verbal pledge to the Hurricanes back in March. Another Miami verbal commit, Dereon Coleman, had an equally strong 2024 high school football debut. The Class of 2026 quarterback threw four touchdowns for Orlando Jones in their victory over Seminole.

The Miami Hurricanes have just beaten rivals Florida State for the verbal commitment of four star safety Bryce Fitzgerald. The Miami Columbus standout seemed to be trending to FSU mid-week but the Hurricanes were able to make a strong surge. Fitzgerald is the 12th ranked safety in the Class of 2025 according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Fitzgerald recorded 10 interceptions last season as a high school junior. The Miami Hurricanes have just FLIPPED three star defensive lineman Mykah Newton from the NC State Wolfpack. The Newberry, Florida standout visited Miami in late July and recently earned his Hurricanes offer. The opportunity to be coached by Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor weighed heavily on Newton, who ultimately decided joining the Hurricanes was his best move. Newton has been a force at Newberry, recorded 13 sacks and 3 forced fumbles last year. He’s been putting on quality weight, now 263 pounds, and will likely play on the interior of Miami’s defensive line.

Is the National Media setting the bar too high when it comes to the Miami Hurricanes preseason hype? ESPN’s Paul Finebaum says the Hurricanes are underrated at number 19. In recent years, the Miami Hurricanes have struggled to find signature wins in big games. Why should we believe 2024 will be any different?
