Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is on pace for another historic NFL season, but his recent fumbling issues have sparked questions about whether Joe Brady should reduce his playing time. That could be a massive mistake for Buffalo's offense. Cook has been one of the NFL's most explosive running backs, and despite concerns about ball security, the Bills cannot afford to take their biggest rushing weapon off the field. After rushing for more than 1,600 yards while averaging 5.2 yards per carry last season, Cook is currently on pace to surpass 1,800 rushing yards in 2026 while averaging 5.6 yards per attempt. Then there's Dalton Kincaid. The Bills tight end opened the season with 225 receiving yards in his first two games, but he's managed just three receptions for 45 yards over the last two contests. Kincaid received only two targets against New England, something Brady admitted should never happen. Buffalo's offensive struggles against the Chargers and Patriots have coincided with Kincaid's declining involvement. Is that really a coincidence? The Bills need to get Cook and Kincaid involved immediately if they want to bounce back against Los Angeles. Now he's already identified something he wants changed.

Josh Allen's game-winning touchdown against Houston may have shown us exactly why this Buffalo Bills offense is different in 2026.

The touchdown to Joshua Palmer wasn't supposed to go there.

Allen said Buffalo had NEVER repped the ball going to Palmer on that play. But when Houston's safety cheated toward DJ Moore, Allen recognized it and made the Texans pay.

That's what having a legitimate WR1 can do for an offense — even when he doesn't touch the football.

And Moore made plenty of plays himself.

He finished his Bills debut with five receptions for 100 yards, immediately establishing himself as one of Josh Allen's primary weapons alongside Dalton Kincaid and Khalil Shakir.

Maybe “everybody eats” isn't Buffalo's offensive identity anymore.

Maybe Joe Brady can finally build this thing around a defined group of elite weapons and let Josh Allen find the matchup he wants.

The House of Horrors is OVER.

The Buffalo Bills open the Joe Brady era with an incredible 36-31 road win over the Houston Texans, giving Josh Allen his first career victory in Houston and Buffalo its first win there since 2006.

And Josh Allen was ridiculous.

334 passing yards.

Two passing touchdowns.

Two rushing touchdowns.

DJ Moore immediately showed what a true WR1 can bring to this offense, Khalil Shakir was attacking beyond the short passing game, and Dalton Kincaid exploded for 130 receiving yards.

Defensively?

There are things Jim Leonhard needs to fix.

Houston tested Buffalo throughout the game, the secondary had some communication problems and the run defense wasn't where it needs to be.

But when the Bills absolutely HAD to make a play, the defense delivered.

Two sacks on Houston's final drive.

A strip-sack to finish it.

Ballgame.

There will be plenty to clean up before Thursday night's home opener against Detroit.

But Buffalo is 1-0.

And Josh Allen's Houston nightmare is finally over.

The Buffalo Bills could be getting Ty Johnson back at exactly the right time.

Johnson practiced Friday and is officially questionable against Houston, but Joe Brady sounds comfortable trusting the veteran running back if he's medically cleared.

And against THIS Texans defense, that could matter.

James Cook is still RB1.

Ray Davis will get his opportunities.

But Ty Johnson knows this offense, can contribute as a receiver and — maybe most importantly this week — can help protect Josh Allen against Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter and Houston's pass rush.

Then there's Greg Dortch.

Dortch has 99 career punt returns and plenty of experience doing exactly what Buffalo needs.

But Joe Brady raised an important question:

Can the Bills afford to use a game-day roster spot on someone who only returns punts?

Dortch may need to prove he can contribute somewhere else before Buffalo elevates him from the practice squad.

Ty Johnson needs to prove he's healthy enough to play.

Greg Dortch needs to prove he can do enough to play.

Two completely different Week 1 questions for the Buffalo Bills.

The Buffalo Bills just caught two potentially important breaks on their 2026 schedule.

First, Houston will be without rookie defensive tackle Caden McDonald against Buffalo.

No, that doesn't suddenly make the Texans defense easy.

Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter are still terrifying, and Houston sacked Josh Allen eight times in this matchup last season.

But McDonald's absence gives Houston one fewer big body to rotate through the middle.

And that gives Buffalo another reason to FEED James Cook.

Make those edge rushers defend the run. Attack the interior. Don't turn this into Josh Allen dropping back 45 times against one of the NFL's best pass rushes.

Then we look ahead to the AFC East.

A.J. Brown is heading to IR, meaning he will miss New England's Week 4 matchup against Buffalo.

That's a massive weapon Jim Leonhard's defense won't have to worry about.

Two injuries.

Two changes to Buffalo's schedule.

And the NFL season hasn't even really gotten started yet.

There is one NFL city where NOTHING seems to go right for Josh Allen.

Houston.

Four trips.

Four losses.

Run James Cook.

Utilize the tight ends.

Get the football out quickly.

Make DJ Moore dangerous after the catch.

And most importantly, don't let Houston's pass rush turn this into last year's nightmare.

Josh Allen doesn't need 400 yards and five touchdowns.

He needs one thing he's never gotten in Houston:

A win.

The Buffalo Bills have one HUGE advantage against the Houston Texans that might be impossible for C.J. Stroud to completely prepare for.

Nobody knows exactly what Jim Leonhard's defense is going to look like.

Buffalo kept things relatively vanilla throughout the preseason. We've heard all offseason about different fronts, disguised pressures, moving players around and finding ways to create favorable matchups.

Now?

There's no reason to hide anything.

Even Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans acknowledged the challenge Houston faces preparing for a new Bills defense without meaningful tape on what Leonhard actually wants to do.

And I think the matchup makes this even more interesting.

Houston enters Week 1 with legitimate questions along its offensive line, particularly with youth on the left side.

That's exactly where I want Leonhard to attack.

Move Ed Oliver around.

Find matchups for Greg Rousseau and Bradley Chubb.

Put five defenders at the line of scrimmage and make C.J. Stroud figure out who's actually coming.

Don't simply ask your defensive linemen to beat their guy.

Create the matchup.

We've spent the entire offseason wondering what Jim Leonhard has been building in Buffalo.

Sunday, we finally get the answer.
