American Urban Legend Series - Part 111 Feb 202000:58:34
America, a melting pot filled with diverse cultures, beautiful natural wonders, and a historic sense of exploration. Among the vast beauty of our wilderness, there also lies a more sinister side.  Throughout the ages, a haunting collection of nightmares and tales of the unexplainable have been passed down generation to generation.  Stories of bloodthirsty creatures lurking in the dark, strange lights in the night sky, and vengeful ghouls forever cursed to wander haunted forests. These are the stories that give us pause while hiking in remote areas of the country, and fill our heads with dread before falling asleep in our tents at night. Murder on the Appalachian Trail - Part 114 Jan 202000:48:27
Sept 13th, 1990 - Biff and Cindi Bowen were at the halfway point of their 2,144 mile hike down the Appalachian Trail, when the couple stopped for supplies in Duncannon, Pennsylvania, before their trek up nearby Cove Mountain.  The two planned to spend the night in a three-sided log shelter along the trail.  As the couple hiked down an incline behind the shelter, Biff sensed that “Something was wrong,”.  He was so overcome with an uneasy sense of dread that he positioned his hiking pole as a weapon before walking around the cabins open side.  On the open side of the cabin, the couple found supplies frantically scattered around the murdered bodies of two hikers. The Bowens walked onto the scene of a grisly double murder.  The victims, two experienced hikers—Molly LaRue, 25, of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and her boyfriend, Geoffrey Hood, 26, of Signal Mountain, Tennessee.  Hood had been shot multiple times with a .22 caliber revolver.  LaRue had been tied up, tortured, raped and stabbed eight times in the neck and upper back.  Join us this week as we investigate the case of Hood and LaRue. Join us in Episode 17 for part 2 of "Murder on the Appalachian Trail", where we wrap up the case of Hood & LaRue. The Arvin Nelson Interview28 Dec 201900:43:50
On August 6th 2014, Arvin Nelson hiked into Big Sur State Park, along California's coast, never to be heard from again.  In episode 5, we discussed the location and his disappearance in detail.  We recommend listening to episode 5 before this interview so you have a better understanding of the case.  Episode 5 can be found here (https://locationsunknown.podbean.com/e/ep-5-arvin-nelson-big-sur-state-park/) or wherever you listen to podcasts. In this interview, Mike discusses the case with two close friends of Arvin, Jay O'Rear & Jason Challas, both of whom have spent many years hiking with Arvin.  Topics ranged from new details about the location where Arvin went missing to a more in depth look at Arvin the person.  Much of what was discussed in this interview hasn't been discussed publicly before and really helps paint a better picture of what happened to Arvin.  While the case remains a mystery to this day, this interview has helped us narrow down possible theories on his disappearance.       Learn about other unsolved missing persons cases in America's wilderness at Locations Unknown. Tom Messick - Lake George Wilderness Area NY13 Oct 201900:50:36
On November 16th, 2015 seven men set out to hunt Lily Pond Road at the Lake George Wilderness Area in Upstate New York . The men were all experienced hunters, had communication devices, were not far from their camp, and were on a commonly used road. After hunting for a couple of hours the group decided to return to their cars. Tom Messick, who was sitting in one spot about 40 yards from the main road, was never seen or heard from again.  The following day, an extensive search and rescue operation was launched in the immediate area of his disappearance. At the peak of the search, over 50 organizations and upwards of 300 searchers were trying to find Tom. The search failed to find Tom or any evidence he had even been in the woods that day. How could an experienced hunter have gone missing in such a short period of time? Why did two FBI agents show up? Join us this week as we piece together the bizarre details behind the disappearance of Tom and search efforts that followed.  This episode is brought to you by Verdure, a company that strives to offer only the highest quality and locally sourced CBD products all made in the USA.    Learn about other unsolved missing persons cases in America's wilderness at Locations Unknown. Yuba City Five - Plumas National Forest17 Sep 201901:12:04
On February 24th, 1978 a group of five adults set out from Yuba City California heading north to Chico to watch a college basketball game.  After the conclusion of the game, the five men were to return to Yuba City, where they had a basketball tournament the next day. What unfolded next in the following days and weeks is shocking and unexplainable.  Instead of driving back to Chico, their car was found abandoned, deep in the Plumas National Forest on a high mountain dirt road, more than 50 miles in the wrong direction near the Rogers Cow Camp site. Searchers attempted to find the missing men, but hampered by severe weather, the search was called off after only a few days.  Months later, a group of motorcyclists made a grizzly discovery, almost 20 miles deeper into the forest, near a Forest Service trailer used used by backpackers for shelter.  Adding to the mystery, several locals claimed to have seen the missing men after their disappearance, with one man claiming to have experienced a very eerie, almost paranormal sighting near the location of the abandoned car.  What caused the five men to drive into the Forest that night? Why did they abandon their car and hike deeper into the forest? Was someone or something chasing them? Join us this week as we try to figure out what happened to the Yuba City Five. In episode 3, we discuss the disappearance of Bobby Bizup, who went missing on August 15, 1958 while attending summer camp at St. Malo Retreat which sits on the Southeastern edge of Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.  Almost a year after his disappearance, a broken hearing aid, some ripped clothing, and bone fragments were found nearly 2000 feet up Mount Meeker, in an area already searched by authorities.  This case has puzzled law enforcement and fascinated the general public for decades.  The strange disappearance of Bobby Bizup remains unsolved to this day.  To help us make sense of this case we sat down with the Director of Search and Rescue for Rampart Search and Rescue, Dave Haskin.  Dave has over 46 years of Search and Rescue experience in Colorado and currently leads a team of over 40.  Join us as we try to piece together what happened to Bobby Bizup. Due to time constraints on this episode, we had to cut out a lot of great content from our interview with Dave.  We will be releasing the full unedited interview with Dave as an add on to this episode in the coming days.   Learn about other unsolved missing persons cases in America's wilderness at Locations Unknown Click here to learn more about Rampart Search and Rescue. Ghosts of the Arctic - The Haunting Mystery of Franklin's Lost Expedition31 Oct 202401:06:47
In 1845, Sir John Franklin led 129 men on HMS Erebus and HMS Terror into the Arctic, vanishing without a trace and sparking one of history’s most haunting mysteries. This Halloween, we explore the eerie legacy of the Franklin Expedition: ghostly sightings around the shipwrecks, chilling whispers near graves on Beechey Island, and cursed artifacts that bring misfortune to those who dare disturb them. Was it lead poisoning, starvation, or something supernatural that doomed the crew? Join us as we dive into the deep end of the Arctic’s frozen secrets and uncover what happened to Sir John Franklins Northwest passage expedition.

Correction 1: During the episode we incorrectly stated actor Alfred Molina (Doctor Octopus in the Spider Man movie) played Sir John Franklin in the AMC show The Terror.  The actor who played Franklin was actually Ciaran Hinds.  Thank you to listener Lara Mangieri for pointing this out!  You're correct, they do look similar.

Correction 2: Joe mixed up Vitamin C and D by stating you get Vitamin C by sunlight.  Vitamin C is acquired by the food you eat and Vitamin D is made by your body when exposed to sunlight.

Correction 3: Mike mispoke a couple of times during the timeline segment and referred to the Back River as the Black River.

Daylenn Pua Disappears While Hiking Hawaii’s Forbidden Haiku Stairs08 Dec 202300:53:43
February 26th, 2015; A young man from the Big Island of Hawaii was on Oahu visiting his grandmother.  He planned to hike the Haiku Stairs, also known as the Stairway to Heaven.  His grandmother warned him it was illegal to hike the stairs and he could be arrested.  Not heeding her warnings, he set off on the hike that morning.  When he didn't return home, he was reported missing, and the search began.  Join us this week as we investigate the disappearance of Daylenn Pua.  (Episode 95)

Notes & Corrections: - Early in the episode, Joe states Moke was visiting his grandmother on the Big Island.  Mike corrects Joe around timestamp 5:15, stating that Moke was from the Big Island and visiting his grandmother on Oahu.   - There were a lot of discrepancies in our research on the age of Moke and the date he went missing.  We discuss this during the episode, and based on evidence believe he started his hike on the 26th, not the 27th, which is listed in many news reports on this case.
