Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) Turns 25!24 Feb 202400:33:51

Pamela Acosta Marquardt and Julie Fleshman have both been profoundly impacted by the loss of their parents to pancreatic cancer, which fueled their dedication to creating change. In 1996, Pam faced the loss of her mother after a six-month struggle with the disease. Confronted by the lack of resources and support for pancreatic cancer, she was driven to take action, ensuring that individuals and families affected by this illness would have access to vital information, resources, and hope. Similarly, Julie's journey at PanCAN was ignited by personal tragedy when she lost her father just four months following his diagnosis at the age of 52. Dissatisfied with the inadequate treatment options available, Julie has spent over two decades as a leader and a global catalyst for change, fighting for better outcomes for those facing pancreatic cancer. Together, their personal experiences have not only shaped their leadership at PanCAN but also exemplified their unwavering commitment to the cause.

Facts vs Feelings24 Feb 202400:37:11

The podcast serves as a reminder that in the face of a challenging diagnosis, the fusion of facts and feelings guides not just survival, but the quality of life.

Why volunteer for a cancer that has such a dismal outcome?02 Jul 202300:23:39

Why volunteer for a cancer that has such a dismal outcome? Bringing awareness being around people that you share something in common with helped her to heal having a voice helped her to feel empowered.

Stephannie was the Caregiver for her Grandmother in the non tradional sense.  She would visit her, read to her, dance for her or just hold her hand and talk with her.

Stephannie's favorite event is PurpleStride, this year she had a different role, she was able to speak with people attending and was able to share her story and hear their story.  In talking to people they expressed they felt hope, felt love and gratiful to have so many people there fighting for a cure.

Stephannie feels volunteering with this group is rewarding in itself.  Being a part of something that is giving back to people. The deep friendships you make with the people you volunteer with is rewarding.

Pancreatic Cancer diagnosis - Not the best way to start your birthday.19 Feb 202300:22:34

Tom, away from home, gets a call on his 65 birthday from his Dr, not wishing him a happy birthday but instead telling him she needed to see you as soon as possible.

Tom, very active and an enthusiast bike rider is diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.  Tom was not a candidate for surgery but went on a clinical trial.  Treatment went on for 15 months after which Tom received good news - he was "NED" - no evidence of disease.  Tom started an oral chemo and continues to take it today.  We talk about the importance of clinical trials, how he has been able to return to a "normal" way of life, he continues to ride his bike, play golf and enjoy life.  Tom continued to be as active as possible during treatment and found this was a way to help him through his treatment and the anxiety that goes along with treatment.  Tom shares his inspiration journey and how he continues to help others through their treatment and journey by hosting a support group through Zoom, every Friday 9am -10:30am PT - to join this support group or for more information regarding group please email Tom at ta20390@yahoo.com

You’ve heard the saying ”It’s not what you know but who you know.”19 Feb 202300:26:15
"It's not what you know but who you know," was certainly true for 10-year pancreatic survivor Thom Mrozek.  Thom wasn't sure how public he wanted to be about his diagnosis, but when his daughter, who at that time attended an episcopal school asked at Chapel "can we pray for my dad?" her request started the ball rolling.   Thom woke up one morning with a recurring pain that went on for a few days.  The pain became worse, and he took himself to urgent care.  The location of his pain caused the urgent care Dr to check his heart.  His heart looked good, and the Dr felt it was a stomach problem probably an ulcer or acid reflux. He was given some medicine and told to follow up with his Primary Care doctor.  Thom went to his internist who ordered a series of tests.  Thom, standing in front of his office received a phone call from his Dr "Thom it's your pancreas, stop eating!" that comment lead to a "six-week testing treadmill."   Thom shares his inspirational journey and how a prayer request led to a community of support for Thom and his family.   "As long as you speak my name, I shall live forever." This episode is dedicated to Lupe Romero

Trust and Estate Planning attorney profession hits home with her mothers diagnosis18 Nov 202200:23:22

Ben Franklin has been quoted as saying “In this world nothing can be said to be certain except Death and taxes” Death is a harsh reality that none of us wants to think about or deal with regardless of our health. What is the ViewRay MRIdian and how is it used for pancreatic cancer patients?30 Aug 202200:28:38

Dr Kim joined us to talk about the use of the ViewRay MRIdian for treatment of pancreatic cancer at Hoag Hospital.  Dr Kim explains that the tumor needs to be hit with high energy x-ray beams.  To be able to hit the tumor you need to be able to see the tumor.  It's that simple.

This is the only machine that uses MRI imaging to visualize the tumor. Tumors move with each breath and this machine allows the tracking of the tumor in real time allowing them to be precise in delivering treatment.

How a man goes from being healthy, to a diabetic with an inoperable pancreatic cancer tumor to being stable.02 Jul 202200:27:03

Ken Parme, a husband, father, grandfather a man with many talents when asked how he wants to be remembered he replied very simply "as a kind man." Ken is a very kind, friendly, talented man who I've had the pleasure of knowing for a number of years.  It wasn't until he shared his journey with us that I realized how much we had in common in regards to our diagnosis.  In December 2012 Ken was diagnosed with an inoperable tumor.  The tumor was wrapped around his veins, and lying against his aorta.

Ken took good care of himself, ate right and was active. He was a power walker and one day on a walk with his wife Rebecca, he couldn’t keep up with her. Rebecca insisted he go see his doctor. Tests were done and Ken was told he was a diabetic and started on insulin immediately. After starting insulin, Ken still felt lousy, so his wife made an appointment with an endocrinologist. Ken, shares his journey starting with his diagnosis of an inoperable pancreatic cancer tumor, his treatment with chemotherapy, the use of the new Cyber-Knife, his eight years "stable status" and a book he and his wife wrote together. Ken and Rebecca Parme wrote a book “In The Gaze of The Divine, Life with Pancreatic Cancer.” from the patient/survivor and caregiver point of view. Available on Amazon.  Ken has also written a children's book available on Amazon “The Adventures of Madde Mckinsey

This episode of Living Hope is dedicated to Ken's wonderful, wife and Caregiver, Rebecca. We want to leave you with a quote from their book, “May we all get to the place where we can accept -let go- and focus on the blessing of the day.”

It wasn't until someone noticed she was jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes) that she was told to go to the ER immediately and learned she had pancreatic cancer.   The first thing Laurie thought of was "oh my God, I can't have my parents bury me."  Laurie shares her inspirational journey through the roller coaster ride of diagnosis, the Whipple, chemotherapy, radiation, being cancer free to reoccurrences, only OC Talk Radio, Orange County’s only community radio station, live streamed from UCI Beall Applied Innovation Center at the Cove.

What is a Caregiver?18 May 202200:24:58

This episode of Living Hope is a continuation of a pervious conversation about being a Caregiver with Stephanie Ruvalcaba Ho. What is a Caregiver? If you provide help to another person in need, you are a caregiver. Caregivers can be professional - hired through an agency or a family member stepping up.  Caregivers come in all different types - the one who takes care of all the medical needs, runs errands, meals, personal needs.  There is a lot to being a Caregiver, many challenges, roll coaster of emotions. Even with all these feelings there are some good things that can come out of this difficult situation. Listen as we have a very open and honest discussion here only on OC Talk Radio, Orange County's only community radio station streaming live from UC I Beall Applied Innovation at the Cove.

This episode of Living Hope is dedicated to all Caregivers and thank them for their care, support and love during our journey.  I’d like to end with a quote from Former First Lady, Rosalynn Carter: “There are only four kinds of people in this world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers and those who will need caregivers. Caregiving is universal.”

Wow! It’s been a year already?18 May 202200:35:04

I can't believe a year has come and gone! Who knew, for me the first episode I would go from "Executive Producer," to actually becoming the host.  Looking back through our first year, so many amazing journeys, each one left me with wanting to learn more.  We shared so many emotions, laughter and tears but each one filled with love. Many of the journey's may not have had the outcome we hoped for but we still found something positive, some strength we could take from every journey.  Join us on our weekly journey as we provide hope here only on OC Talk Radio Orange County's only radio station live streaming from our station here at UCI Beall Innovation Center at the Cove

How does a purple journal help a young girl deal with her dads cancer diagnosis?14 May 202200:25:36
A family friend gave 14 year old Tori a purple journey to help her cope with her feelings after learning her father had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  Ironically at that time neither realized purple is the awareness color for pancreatic cancer.  Tori felt her journal offered her a safe place to write about her journey and also used this journal not only to write about her feelings but to also keep track of her dads symptoms, treatments, medications, test results, anything to do with his journey.  Hear how this teenage girl helped co-facilitate a support group for other teenagers who had lost their parent and how her experience led her to where she is today.  Only on OC Talk Radio, Orange County's only community radio station live streamed from UCI Beall Applied Innovation Center.

What to do when someone dies10 May 202200:32:57

In this episode of Living Hope we continue our conversation we started on March 24.  What to do when a loved one dies?  This is a subject no one wants to talk about but at some point it's information that can be helpful.  If we can all set down and talk about what we want when we die it would be so helpful for those left behind.  What is a  Advanced Health Care Directive? Is one needed?  Who needs to be notified? What kind of service should we have?  Would a check list be beneficial? These are some of the topics we talked about. It can be a heavy subject but we did have some laughs along the way.

"As long as you speak my name, I shall live forever"
