| Episode 62 - Gerald Casale from DEVO | 18 Sep 2024 | 00:33:56 | |
“Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we’ll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring.
This week, we have Jerry Casale on the show, a founding member of the legendary band DEVO. Devo were one of the foundations of the post-punk/new wave era with songs like "Uncontrollable Urge," “Girl U Want,” “Beautiful World,” and their biggest hit and early MTV staple, 1980’s “Whip It.” The formation of the band, however, was born from the tragic events of the shootings of four students at Kent State University by the Ohio National Guard in 1970, which Gerald witnessed first hand. Here, he tells us about that day and how that led to the formation of one of the biggest bands of the 80s.

There’s even a legend that Jane coined the phrase “Britpop.” Her first book, Lunch With The Wild Frontiers: A History Of Britpop And Excess in 13 and a 1/2 Chapters, was a fantastic read. | Episode 52- GARY NUMAN | 17 Jan 2024 | 00:40:40 | |
We're back with a new season and we’re kicking off with a story from the legendary Gary Numan. After a series of shows at Wembly in 1981, Numan decided to “retire” for a spell. Music got in the way of Numan’s other love, flying planes and, in 1982 he decided to take his plane and circumnavigate the globe. Today, Gary tells us about the highs and lows of that experience.
