Probiotic Protocols to Heal IBS and SIBO Naturally
Introduction
As many of my readers know, I have stayed drug free and surgery free from widespread Crohn’s disease for over 25 years. In this series, I interview my long‑time colleague, Natasha Trenev. She is the founder and owner of Natren Probiotics. Many people call her the mother of probiotics. She had probiotic standards read into the U.S. Congressional Record. If our industry followed those standards, probiotic supplements would be far better today. I asked Natasha to join me for a series of deep‑dive calls. I want to bring her knowledge into the mainstream. She has worked in this field for 60 years. She is 77 and still working because she sees so many chronically ill adults and children. We both care deeply. We also use critical thinking. We test ideas. We keep what works. We discard what does not. This blog is based on my in-depth interview with Natasha Trenev, the Mother of Probiotics. You can watch the complete episode in this video: Or you can listen to the podcast: In this post, I share what we discussed about irritable bowel syndrome and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. I also share the exact protocol I use, with probiotic species and herbal antimicrobials. IBS and SIBO: What They Are and Why They Matter What is Irritable Bowel SyndromeIrritable bowel syndrome is a functional gastrointestinal disorder. Doctors use this term when the digestive tract looks normal on tests. Yet symptoms persist. IBS symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, or a mix. These symptoms affect quality of life. Work, school, travel, and relationships suffer. IBS does not always get labeled as inflammatory. But inflammation often plays a role. The gut microbiota becomes imbalanced. Gut motility slows or speeds up. The immune system overreacts or underreacts. Food breaks down into particle sizes that feed bad bacteria. The result is discomfort and distress. What is Small Intestinal Bacterial OvergrowthSmall intestinal bacterial overgrowth means too many bacteria live in the small intestine. Bacteria should be dense in the large intestine. The small intestine should hold fewer microbes. In SIBO, fermentation happens too early. This triggers gas, distention, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or constipation. Nutrient absorption suffers. Fatty acids may not get absorbed well. Fat‑soluble vitamins can drop. Many people labeled with IBS also have SIBO. Breath tests try to detect it. These tests can help. They can also miss cases. Clinical trials use them with a placebo group to measure change, but real life is messier. Root causes and risk factorsRoot causes differ by person. Common risk factors include low stomach acid, chronic stress, past antibiotic therapy, use of proton pump inhibitors, slowed gut motility, food poisoning, and abdominal surgery. Leaky gut, also called increased intestinal permeability, can add to the load. The gut microbiome shifts. The immune response becomes confused. I aim my protocol at these causes. Why I Trust Natasha Trenev’s PerspectiveNatasha’s standards focus on strain specificity, potency through expiry, and proper delivery. She warns against vague labels like “probiotic blend.” She rejects soil‑based probiotics for most people with IBS or SIBO. She focuses on traditional probiotics with documented safety and clear strain IDs. She has watched the industry change. She has also seen misinformation explode. She and I agree. A colon cleanse is not what most IBS patients need. A careful, staged plan is needed instead. Natasha also reminds us that the intestinal lining is only one cell thick. Those cells turn over every three to five days. Attached bacteria shed with those cells. So regular intake of live microorganisms is needed. This is why daily probiotic supplementation matters. How IBS Feels Day to DayIBS with diarrhea can rule a person’s life. Natasha shared how many people plan routes by bathrooms. The urge hits fast. Accidents happen. Fear grows. IBS with constipation is also miserable. Gas builds. Pain increases. The digestive tract feels stuck. Either pattern hurts. Pain often comes from trapped gas and nerve irritation. When food does not fully digest, the wrong bacteria feast on it. They make excess gas. Neurons in the gut wall get irritated. Abdominal pain follows. Post‑meal discomfort can appear minutes after eating. My Core Philosophy: Reduce, Rebuild, RepeatI recommend a simple cycle. Reduce harmful microbes. Rebuild beneficial bacteria. Repeat as needed. I learned this the hard way with my own gut. I then tested it with hundreds of readers. Step 1. Reduce pathogens during the dayIn my protocol, I use a powerful herbal antimicrobial approach. Wild oregano oil works well for many people. It is taken up to five times per day during a defined “kill phase.” This is not used forever, but in pulses. Some people also rotate in other herbal antimicrobials such as olive leaf extract, garlic extract, or grapefruit seed extract. These are options, but it’s best to choose one primary tool for each round. Step 2. Rebuild at night with targeted probioticsBefore bed, I recommend a high dose of therapeutic probiotic strains. Natren probiotics are my choice because I trust their strain integrity and delivery system. The bacteria need to survive stomach acid, attach to the intestinal wall, and communicate with the immune system. The probiotics species in Natren probiotics include Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium infantis, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus. These species support both the small intestine and the large intestine. They help reduce bloating, improve gut motility, calm the immune response, and stabilize the digestive lining. Step 3. Repeat the cycle until stableThis treatment cycle is repeated based on symptoms. For chronic conditions, it may be repeated every few months. For inflammatory bowel disease, longer cycles may be needed. Symptom tracking is important here: bowel movements, gas, abdominal pain, mood, and energy all provide guidance. When symptoms return, repeat the protocol. When stability is reached, continue with a maintenance dose of probiotics. Healthy Trinity: Where It Fits and How It HelpsNatasha recommends starting with Natren’s Healthy Trinity, a three-in-one probiotic system. It delivers specific strains to the areas of the gastrointestinal tract where they are most effective. Many people with IBS begin with two capsules per day, taken away from food. However, if you’re having more than 3 bowel movements per day, I don’t recommend you swallow any capsules (or pills) as the transit time is too fast for them to dissolve properly. In that case, use Natren’s powdered probiotics and mix in filtered water. Healthy Trinity can be helpful whether IBS shows up as spastic colon, or constipation:
While none of her probiotics are harmful, taking very high doses too quickly can cause an intense die-off (Herxheimer reaction). This happens when yeast or bad bacteria die and release toxins. Symptoms can include fatigue, headaches, rashes, or flu-like feelings. Starting slow and increasing gradually works better. How I Pair Antimicrobials and ProbioticsWe learned this through experience. Early on, some of my readers tried to only kill pathogens. They felt awful. They took longer to recover. When we paired killing during the day with rebuilding at night, we saw faster, gentler progress. In our informal reader study with over 250 participants, this paired approach gave better results. People reported significant improvements in gas, bloating, and abdominal pain. Many also noted better sleep and calmer moods. The gut‑brain axis responded! Food Strategy During TreatmentFood choices can either support or slow recovery. Both Natasha and I recommend keeping the diet simple during treatment. Foods to avoid
Some people find short-term relief with a modified low FODMAP diet or an elemental diet during the antimicrobial phase. These reduce fermentable substrates in the small intestine. However, they are temporary tools. The long-term goal is always a diverse, whole-food diet that supports a healthy gut microbiome. The Immune System and Your GutYour immune system listens to your gut microbes. When the right bacteria attach to the gut lining, they send calming signals. They can down-regulate an overactive response. They can also increase defenses when needed. Natasha uses a simple image. Think of the immune system as a scanner. Think of food and bacteria as QR codes. If the code is wrong, the immune system overreacts. If the code is right, it lets food and good microbes pass. Probiotic species help set the code. This is one reason probiotic supplementation improves more than bowel habits. People often report fewer food reactions. Skin clears. Joints ache less. Energy rises. The entire body benefits when the digestive system calms down. Gut‑Brain Axis and Mental HealthI see strong links between gut health and mood. The digestive tract produces serotonin and dopamine. The vagus nerve carries signals between the gut and the brain. When dysbiosis dominates, anxiety and depression can increase. People may even feel wired and tired. Natasha and I have seen young people on multiple psychotropic drugs while their gastrointestinal tract is in distress. She has also seen how hard some drugs are to taper. She notes that certain medications, like some SSRIs and benzodiazepines, can be difficult. This is not medical advice. It is a call to look at the gut first. When the gut microbiota improves, the brain often follows. Better sleep, steadier mood, and clearer thinking show up as the gut heals. Testing: Helpful, But Not the Whole StoryBreath tests for SIBO can guide treatment. Stool tests can find pathogens. But both have limits. Stool only shows what leaves the body. It does not prove dominance in the gut. Breath tests miss cases and can be affected by diet and motility. I do not wait on perfect tests. I use symptoms to guide action. I start the protocol. I adjust based on response. I save money for quality probiotics and whole food instead of many rounds of testing. Traditional Probiotics vs Soil‑Based ProbioticsPeople ask me about soil‑based probiotics. I do not use them for IBS or SIBO. Natasha has long warned about this category. Traditional probiotics, with lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, work in symbiosis with the human GI tract. They have 100 years of clinical studies. They offer predictable, beneficial effects. Soil organisms can behave differently. Many IBS patients report flares after taking them. I choose the safer path. Managing Die‑Off and Herxheimer ReactionsWhen pathogens die, they release toxins. Candida overgrowth is a good example. As it dies, up to 168 toxic compounds flood the system. This can create a “die-off” or Herxheimer reaction, where symptoms temporarily worsen before improving. Common die-off effects include headaches, joint pain, skin eruptions, fatigue, and flu-like feelings. To manage this stage, it helps to:
These steps allow the body to continue clearing harmful microbes while keeping the die-off reaction at a manageable level. Daily Habits That Protect Gut Health
If you want step‑by‑step detail, read my books. Listen to Your Gut and Listen to Your IBS lay out protocols, dosages, and timing. They also cover diet, symptom tracking, and troubleshooting. Many healthcare professionals keep a copy in their waiting rooms. Some cannot recommend them directly due to regulations. But they use the tools themselves. You can too. If you only want the wild oregano/probiotic protocol mentioned above, then just get my Natural Healing Guide: Gut Infection. It’s a short book, and easy to implement. Working With ProfessionalsPartner with a skilled healthcare provider if you can. Choose someone who respects natural care, understands the digestive tract, and will tailor treatment. Share your plan. Ask for help with medication tapers if needed. Combine wisdom. Your body wins when you build a supportive team. FAQ: Quick Answers From Our Conversation Question: Does Healthy Trinity help IBS‑D and IBS‑CAnswer: Yes. The bifidobacteria can support IBS‑D. The lactobacilli and Digest‑Lac can support IBS‑C. Start low. Increase slowly. Watch for die‑off. If having more than 3 bowel movements per day, switch to Natren powders. Question: Can I take probiotics with wild oregano oil?Answer: Yes. Separate them by two hours. Kill during the day. Rebuild at night. Question: Do fermented foods replace probiotic supplements?Answer: No. Fermented foods are functional foods. They support health. But they rarely supply the specific species and potencies needed for IBS and SIBO. Use both if tolerated. Question: How long will this take?Answer: Time varies. Some feel better in weeks. Complex cases can take months. Infections like mycobacteria can cycle. I repeat rounds every few months until stable. Question: What about digestive enzymes?Answer: Digestive enzymes can help during meals. They reduce the load on the small intestine. They can ease bloating and post‑meal discomfort. A Note From NatashaNatasha reminds us that the human body renews itself. About 98 percent of the body rebuilds each year. We also shed vast numbers of bacteria every minute. We must replace them with quality proteins and beneficial bacteria. The body is not defective. It knows how to heal when given the right tools and the right perception of reality. This is hopeful news. It should encourage you to start. Putting It All Together: A Simple Starter Plan
This plan is safe, clear, and effective for many IBS and SIBO patients. It respects the gut microbiome. It respects the immune system. It works with the body. Why We Are Doing This SeriesI invited Natasha because her knowledge is rare. We have few people left with her level of experience. We want to record and share what she knows before it disappears. We want to cut through noise and marketing. We want to give you clear steps that help. In every episode, we will take one topic. We will break it down. We will show you what to do at home. Healing IBS and SIBO takes time, but it is possible. By reducing harmful microbes, restoring beneficial bacteria, and supporting the gut with diet and lifestyle, you give your digestive system the chance to recover. Natasha and I share these protocols because we want people to have accurate information, not quick fixes or gimmicks. With the right probiotic supplementation, targeted diet changes, and consistent support, you can improve gut health and quality of life. For more details, you can explore my books Listen to Your Gut and Listen to Your IBS, or contact Natren directly for guidance on probiotics. My own site also has live chat if you need support in applying these protocols. You May Also Be Interested In:

How Imix Supplements Support Gut Healing and Immune Health
My Journey with Digestive Disease
When I was first diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, I was swamped with fear and confusion. Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis are both forms of inflammatory bowel disease. They involve an attack the digestive tract, and cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bleeding. My doctors suggested surgery and steroids. But I refused. I wanted a different path. I wanted to support my body’s ability to heal without harsh interventions. A massive colonic hemorrhage pushed me to create my first formula. I had ten mercury fillings removed at once. Without any detox support, my body was poisoned and went into crisis. My weight dropped to 99 pounds. My albumin levels collapsed. I could not walk. The medical system had no answers. My choice was surgery, steroids, or finding another way. I chose to heal. You can watch the video to hear more about how I healed from Crohn’s disease, and what led me to formulate these powerful healing tools: Or you can listen to the podcast: About This EpisodeEverything you ever wanted to know about how and why I formulated each of my powerful healing formulas for Imix Nutrition Inc. Learn how all of these products arose from my own healing journey – things I needed, which did not exist at the time. This video/podcast was a training session I held for doctors and health practitioners. They wanted to learn how they can best use products like Absorb Plus, QuikPlus Minerals, MultiAbsorb, and MucosaCalm to help their patients heal. What we cover:
The digestive tract is not only where food is broken down. It is a key part of the immune system. Chronic inflammation in the small intestine and large intestine can weaken the entire body. Nutrient deficiencies often follow. Red blood cells may become low due to iron deficiency or folate deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency is common. Fatty acids and other essential vitamins become depleted. Blood tests can show these imbalances, but often they are not addressed. Traditional treatments focus on suppressing symptoms. But side effects can be severe. Long-term drug usage creates new health risks. That is why alternative medicine and dietary supplements can play such an important role. Supporting the immune response and the body’s natural healing mechanisms can be safer for many Crohn’s patients. The Elemental Diet and Absorb PlusWhen I was at my weakest, I created Absorb Plus. This elemental shake became my lifeline. For six weeks, I drank nine shakes a day. I gained weight, restored my strength, and healed my gut lining. Within 7 weeks, I rode my bike to the gym, where I worked out. All Crohn’s symptoms went into remission. Absorb Plus works like a liquid diet. It contains pre-digested nutrients that the digestive system can absorb without stress. It is like breast milk for adults. There are several versions:
Absorb Plus has helped many ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s patients avoid feeding tubes and parenteral nutrition. Clinical studies on elemental diets show positive effects on disease activity. Side effects are minimal compared to steroids. The health benefits include weight gain, symptom relief, and reduced intestinal inflammation. MultiAbsorb for Daily NutrientsWhen I healed, I wanted to thrive. I grew tired of opening 20 supplement bottles every morning. So I created MultiAbsorb. It combines essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids in one scoop. No fillers. No flow agents. No chemicals. MultiAbsorb Daily Essential provides folic acid, Vitamin B, Vitamin D, and other key nutrients in balanced amounts. MultiAbsorb Immune Booster adds supergreens, bioflavonoids, and antioxidants. Clinical trials confirm the importance of these compounds for immune function. Blood tests can track deficiencies and guide dosage. Nutritional supplements like MultiAbsorb help prevent long-term nutrient deficiencies. They support red blood cell formation, strengthen the immune system, and improve overall health. QuikPlus MineralsMinerals are vital for the body’s ability to heal. But many forms are poorly absorbed. Tablets and powders often cause side effects like constipation or diarrhea. That is why I created QuikPlus Minerals. They are atomsized, ionic minerals that bypass digestion. They absorb through the lining of the mouth. No irritation. No stress. The Quick Plus line includes:
Health benefits include stronger bones, better absorption, and less oxidative stress. Clinical trials show the importance of magnesium, iron, and trace minerals in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Colon Support FormulasMany Crohn’s patients suffer from constipation or severe diarrhea. Standard laxatives or stool firming agents can trigger adverse effects. That is why I created ColonEaze Move and ColonEaze Firm.
Keeping a food diary helps identify trigger foods. Combining dietary fiber with these blends provides long-term symptom relief. Healing the Mucosal LiningThe mucosal lining of the gastrointestinal tract must be restored for long-term remission. My formula MucosaCalm uses slippery elm, marshmallow root, and N-acetyl glucosamine. These herbal remedies support tissue repair and reduce intestinal inflammation. For anal fissures, I developed FissureHeal suppositories. They ease pain and speed healing. Alternative medicine can work where standard treatments fail. Clinical studies confirm the role of these herbs in gut healing. The Role of Diet in Long-Term RemissionA healthy, well-tolerated diet is essential for IBD patients. Well-cooked vegetables, bone broths, wild/white/Haiga rice, sprouted quinoa, plenty of good fats (cold-pressed flax, MCT, ghee, pasture-raised lard or tallow), and wild-harvested cold-water fish provide fatty acids and essential vitamins. Fish oil reduces oxidative stress. Vitamin D supplements are important when blood tests show low vitamin D levels. Calcium supplements can be used, but liquid ionic forms of calcium (see Bone Matrix) are safer. Avoidance of dairy products often helps because lactose and casein intolerance is common in IBD. A low residue diet may be useful during flares. Lifestyle changes like stress reduction and gentle exercise also play an important role. Working with Health Care ProvidersBlood tests are key in guiding a treatment plan. Healthcare providers can check for anemia along with iron, folate, magnesium, vitamin D, and vitamin A deficiencies. A combination of tests shows nutrient status and disease activity. It is a good idea to ask about side effects of prescribed drugs. Many Crohn’s patients benefit from integrating dietary supplements with medical care. A cooperative approach between patients and health care providers brings the best results. My Goal for Crohn’s and Colitis PatientsHealing from Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis is possible. Nutritional supplements, herbal remedies, and elemental diets provide symptom relief and long-term remission. Supporting the immune system and the digestive tract allows the body to recover. My journey has been from near-death to thriving health. I have lived surgery-free for decades. My children are healthy and strong because of these protocols. My 83-year-old mother remains active and medication-free. Final ThoughtsCrohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are serious, but hope is real. Gentle nutrition, alternative medicine, and dietary supplements can provide lasting health benefits. Listen to your gut. Support it with what it needs. Healing can begin. Bacteria as Intelligent Allies: My Conversation with Natasha Trenev
I recently had another conversation with my dear friend Natasha Trenev, founder of Natren and known worldwide as the Mother of Probiotics. Natasha has spent more than 60 years in the field of fermented foods. She was the first to introduce probiotics to North America back in 1982, long before most people even knew what the word meant. We spoke about how environmental toxins are destroying our microbiome, how bacteria are far more intelligent than we realize, and what simple steps we can all take to heal our bodies and our homes. As many of you know, I healed myself from widespread Crohn’s disease and have been drug and surgery free for almost 30 years. I’ve spent the last 25 years helping others do the same. Natasha and I are aligned in our mission: to restore health by protecting and nurturing the microbiome. This blog is based on my in-depth interview with her. You can watch the complete episode in this video: Or listen to the podcast: We talked about how chemicals and pesticides disrupt the microbiome, why bacteria are intelligent beings, and what simple steps can detox your home. We also explored traditional foods, the probiotic strains that truly help, and how mindset and emotional healing create a healthy inner terrain. The discussion also highlighted bacteria as intelligent, sentient beings:
Natasha explained something very interesting about the various mechanisms bacteria use to communicate. Our bacteria are constantly in conversation with our immune system. They are not silent passengers, they are actively guiding what happens in our bodies. They do this in three main ways: 1. Chemical Signaling
Through these methods, bacteria can influence how our immune system reacts, when it should calm down, and how inflammation is regulated. The communication goes both ways. Immune cells send messages back, and the bacteria adjust accordingly. When our microbiome is healthy, this back-and-forth keeps the body balanced. When it’s damaged, the lines of communication break down, and that’s when trouble begins. Bacteria Also Respond to Our EmotionsBut here’s where it gets even more interesting: bacteria also respond to our thoughts and emotions. Natasha shared that in fermentation labs, if the person tending the cultures came in with negative energy, the batch often failed. The bacteria simply refused to “set” properly. This is why I actually talk to my probiotics when I drink them. I thank them for coming to help me. I send them love. It might sound strange, but these are sentient beings. They respond to the environment we create: both physically and emotionally. When we treat them as partners rather than passive supplements, they often do more for us. Chemicals, Pesticides, and the Explosion of Chronic DiseaseWe also discussed about the chemicals in our food, water, and air. Most people don’t realize that these are not just “pesticides” or “weed killers.” Many of them were originally patented as antibiotics. Glyphosate, for example, was first patented as a very potent antibiotic. So every time we eat conventionally grown food, we are taking in micro-doses of antibiotics. These chemicals don’t just stay in the soil, they enter our food, our water, and even the air we breathe. They can also pass through the skin simply by touching pesticide-laden produce. What do these chemicals do?They disrupt our natural microbiome. They upset the balance of bacteria not only in the gut, but also in the reproductive organs, bloodstream, and even brain cells. They act as endocrine disruptors, throwing off the delicate balance of hormones. They also interfere with how we metabolize sugar and regulate blood glucose. When our microbiome is under constant assault like this, the immune system has no choice but to go into overdrive. Inflammation is triggered because the body perceives cells damaged by toxins as defective. This is why we see an explosion of chronic illness. Natasha believes and I agree that these chemical exposures are one of the primary reasons why 80% of people in North America now suffer from some form of chronic disease. Easy steps to create a healing & detox space while you sleep Water filtration:
Click to see my book with instruction video where I show you how to turn every room in your house into one that supports your healing Reduce electromagnetic exposure:
These easy changes may sound simple, but the synergy together creates a powerful foundation for healing. When your water, air, food, and home environment are cleaner, your beneficial bacteria can do their job of protecting and detoxifying your body. Diet and Traditional Food WisdomNatasha’s daily meals still reflect the healthy traditions of her Balkan heritage. Meat was eaten only twice a week, with most meals built around vegetables, beans, sourdough bread, and dairy. She still starts her day with pasture-raised eggs, dark rye toast, real butter, and olive oil, with fresh fruit and simple home-cooked meals throughout the day. She also reminded us how difficult eating out can be, since restaurants often use the cheapest, most chemical-laden ingredients. This is why she believes the farmers market is our best option — not just for fresh produce, but also as a model for future community kitchens and stalls serving simple, clean, nutrient-dense meals. Shopping your local market once a week and talking directly to farmers is one of the easiest ways to bring back this tradition of real food and safeguard your health. The Probiotics That Truly HelpMost probiotic products on the market don’t work because the bacteria are not compatible with the human body or are poorly grown. Natasha spent decades selecting strains that have been studied for over 100 years and that naturally live in our digestive tract:
For people with sensitive guts, Natasha recommends starting with Life Start – B. infantis, then slowly adding Bifido-Factor (for diarrhea-prone) or Digesta-Lac – L. bulgaricus (for constipation). The Role of Mindset and TraumaGood bacteria want to live in a healthy, positive environment. Negative thoughts, unresolved trauma, and toxic emotions make us poor hosts. This is why healing the gut often requires more than food and supplements. Therapies like Lazer Tapping, EFT tapping, hypnotherapy, craniosacral work, and somatic experiencing help release trauma stored in the tissues. Try a FREE Lazer Tapping Session with me! Final ThoughtsHealing doesn’t have to be complicated. Focus on the basics: clean air and water, real food, supportive bacteria, and a positive mindset. These are the foundations of health. Bacteria are not passive. They are intelligent beings that sense our environment and emotions. When we give them the right conditions, they work with us to detoxify, regulate, and heal. This is why I see them as partners on the journey back to wellness. You May Also Be Interested In:

Healing the Digestive Tract: Herbal Antimicrobials, Probiotics, and Dietary Changes for SIBO
For over 25 years, I have worked with people struggling with digestive diseases. I’ve lived through my own healing journey and shared what works in my books and on Listen To Your Gut. Today, I want to talk about small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), a condition that is becoming more common, especially in young women. DOWNLOAD CHAPTER ONE of LTYG for Free to Get Started! In this blog, I’ll share insights from my recent podcast with Natasha Trenev, founder of Natren probiotics and a true pioneer in gut health. Natasha has over 60 years of experience in this field. Together, we’ve seen what works and what doesn’t when it comes to treatment of SIBO. This isn’t just about bacteria in the small intestine. It’s about the digestive tract as a whole—how it functions, what causes disruption, and how we can bring it back into balance using natural treatments. Watch the full episode of my conversation with Natasha Trenev below. You can watch the video: Or listen to the podcast: Topics Covered in This Episode:
When most people hear SIBO, they think only of bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine. But SIBO is more complex.
In reality, the root cause of SIBO involves motility issues, immune dysfunction, food sensitivities, and stress. This is why so many people relapse after standard treatment. The Problems With Standard Treatment Doctors often prescribe antibiotic treatment like rifaximin for SIBO. Yes, antibiotics can reduce symptoms. But here’s what I’ve seen:
In fact, Natasha and I both agree: relying on antibiotics alone is like putting a band-aid on a deep wound. It does not address dietary changes, lifestyle changes, or the need to replenish good bacteria. Why Probiotics MatterIn the treatment of SIBO, one of the most powerful steps is to restore the balance of good bacteria in the gut. But not all probiotics are created equal. I’ve tested products around the world. From Germany to Japan, I looked for alternatives. But only Natren probiotics consistently meet the strict criteria needed to survive stomach acid, reach the small intestine, and stay alive through the expiration date. Without potent probiotics, you risk wasting time and money. When you’re healing, every step matters. Diet as a Healing ToolHealing the digestive tract requires food that is easy to digest. Many SIBO patients turn to the low-FODMAP diet, or even the specific carbohydrate diet. While these can help reduce digestive symptoms, they are not long-term solutions. From my own experience, and hundreds of thousands of my readers, I recommend:
Avoid raw foods during the healing phase. Raw produce carries bacteria and is harder to digest when gut motility is impaired. This approach may feel restrictive at first. But remember, it’s a short-term elimination diet designed to calm your system while you repair the gut microbiome. I have also written a detailed blog about how to use an Elemental Diet to treat SIBO & IBS Herbal AntimicrobialsWhen it comes to clearing harmful bacteria, herbal antimicrobials can be as effective as pharmaceuticals—with fewer side effects.
In clinical trials, herbal supplements performed just as well as rifaximin in SIBO patients. For many, this is encouraging news. The Role of Gut MotilityA healthy migrating motor complex (MMC) keeps food moving through the digestive tract. When motility slows, food stagnates and bacteria multiply. Common causes of slow motility include:
Supporting healthy motility means:
Without normalizing motility, SIBO often comes back even after strict diets or herbal therapy. Addressing Nutrient DeficienciesBecause of malabsorption, many SIBO patients suffer from nutrient deficiencies.
Correcting these deficiencies, using a therapeutic nutrient blend like MultiAbsorb Daily Essential, along with crucial minerals like Bone Matrix, is part of restoring long-term balance. Emotional Health and the Gut-Brain Connection The gut is often called the “second brain.” Many with SIBO also report anxiety, depression, and stress. That’s because the gut produces neurotransmitters like serotonin. When the microbiome is disrupted, your mood can spiral. This is why I created free tools for you, like:
Stress management techniques are not optional. They are central to healing. Without addressing stress, the digestive system cannot recover fully. Lab Testing: Helpful or Misleading?While tests like the SIBO breath test or stool test can be useful, they are not the ultimate measure of healing. In one study, 70% of patients reported major symptom relief, even though their breath tests remained abnormal. That’s why I encourage you: don’t let a lab result override your body’s signals. Listen to your symptoms. Trust how your body feels. My Recommended Healing Protocol for SIBOBased on decades of experience, here’s a summary protocol for natural SIBO treatment:
After decades of working in natural healing, one truth stands out: the body can heal itself when given the right tools. SIBO is not a life sentence. By addressing the root cause, nourishing the digestive tract, using a good mind/body therapy, and restoring balance with herbal treatments, probiotics, and dietary changes, you can move from chronic symptoms to lasting health. If you’d like more guidance, watch or listen to the full podcast episode with Natasha above. And remember: listen to your gut. It always knows the way. You May Also Be Interested In:
| How Family Dynamics Impact the Health of Children | 01 oct. 2025 | ||
Dysfunctional Families Have an Impact on Childhood
The family environment plays a critical role in a child’s emotional and physical health. When a child develops a chronic illness, such as Crohn’s disease, the roots often go deeper than physical symptoms. In a recent interview, Jini Patel Thompson, founder of Listen to Your Gut, shared her insights with Joanna Bishop from the Living Free with IBD podcast, on how family dynamics affect childhood disease. She explained how emotional support, open communication, and secure attachment within the family unit can significantly influence healing and well-being for our children. Watch the video: Or listen to the podcast: Show Notes from the episode: 1. Jini’s Journey to Healing:Jini shares her diagnosis with Crohn’s disease over 20 years ago and her decision to pursue a holistic healing path after conventional treatments proved ineffective. Her commitment to exploring mind, body, and spirit has kept her drug and surgery-free. 2. The Power of Listening to Your Gut:Jini discusses the importance of trusting one’s body and inner wisdom as a pathway to healing. Her online community, “Listen to Your Gut,” serves as a support network for individuals seeking natural healing methods. 3. Holistic Healing Practices:The episode delves into various holistic practices, including meditation and visualization, and their role in managing gut health. Jini emphasizes the significance of addressing emotional and spiritual aspects of health. 4. Empowerment through Knowledge:Jini highlights the importance of educating oneself about natural remedies and building a personal “toolbox” for health. She shares resources available on her website, which offer free access to effective treatment protocols. 5. Parental Guidance and Support:The conversation touches on how parents can support their children with chronic illnesses by being mindful of language and fostering a positive environment. Jini advises parents to work on their own well-being to positively influence their children’s health journeys. Emotional Causes and Soul AgreementsJini discussed the idea that chronic illnesses may sometimes be linked to emotional needs and unresolved patterns within the family. She suggested that soul agreements or karmic contracts could be in place, where a child chooses to experience illness as a way to bring transformation within the family unit. For example, a child might develop a chronic condition to divert attention from parental conflict, acting as a catalyst for change. This can create a temporary supportive environment, allowing parents to focus on caregiving rather than their differences. Over time, the child’s illness may lead to deeper conversations, improved emotional support, and a chance for family healing. These deeper emotional and spiritual patterns can be challenging to identify. However, looking into past experiences, unresolved trauma, and family history may offer clues. Some families find clarity through meditation, journaling, or working with energetic practitioners who specialize in past life regression or soul retrieval. The Influence of Parents’ Emotional StatesParents play a crucial role in a child’s healing. A parent’s nervous system can directly influence the child’s. When a parent is calm and centered, it creates a sense of safety for the child. In contrast, a wired, anxious parent may unknowingly heighten the child’s emotional distress. Jini emphasized the importance of self-work for parents. By regulating their own emotional states, they provide a healthier emotional landscape for the child to recover. Children often adapt their behavior to balance the emotional energy of the family. For example, a young child may become more grounded if the parent is overly anxious, acting as a stabilizing force. While this may help the family function, it can have negative consequences on the child’s emotional well-being if it persists over time. Authoritative parenting that combines high expectations with emotional support tends to be more effective. It allows the child to feel secure while maintaining a structure that encourages responsibility. Families dealing with chronic illness benefit from a balance of boundaries and open communication. Emotional needs must be acknowledged and met with compassion. Dialogue and Creative ExpressionFor children who resist traditional meditative practices, creative expression can serve as a bridge to emotional healing. Drawing, painting, and storytelling can allow children to access their inner world. Jini shared techniques like using the non-dominant hand to draw symptoms or feelings, helping bypass the logical brain and access deeper emotional messages. These practices can improve emotional expression and help children process their experiences. When children are encouraged to explore their inner feelings through art or storytelling, they often reveal deeper emotional truths. These activities offer a non-threatening way to open dialogue about fears, worries, or physical pain. Over time, children become more aware of how emotions affect their physical health. This type of communication helps build social skills and increases their emotional resilience. Surrogate Tapping and Energetic HealingJini also talked about surrogate tapping, where a parent performs tapping for the child. This can be effective even if the child is not physically present. While temporary surrogate tapping may provide relief, Jini encouraged involving the child in the process to foster self-awareness and resilience. Energy work, including tapping and soul retrieval, can support healing when done with skilled practitioners. Choosing practitioners carefully is essential, especially for young people. A parent should first evaluate the practitioner to ensure the environment is safe and supportive. In some cases, children respond better when parents model the process. Parents can attend sessions first, then introduce their child gradually. This approach helps create a sense of safety. It also demonstrates the importance of self-care, which children are more likely to emulate. Impact of Language and IdentityLanguage shapes a child’s perception of their illness. Jini advised avoiding medical labels in daily conversations. Instead of focusing on terms like “Crohn’s disease” or “chronic illness,” parents can shift to language that centers the child’s body wisdom: “What is your body saying today?” This creates space for open communication and emotional support without letting the illness define the child’s identity. By not allowing the condition to dominate conversations, the child can engage more fully in their social life and develop healthy relationships. Emotional needs can be met in a way that promotes a balanced self-view, not one rooted in victimhood. This shift in language supports emotional well-being and helps build high self-esteem. Children who see themselves as whole and capable—even while facing challenges—are more likely to succeed in other areas of life. This includes academics, friendships, and future independence. The Broader Family SystemChronic illnesses affect more than just the diagnosed child. Sibling relationships, marital dynamics, and even extended family roles may shift. This can result in behavioral problems, sibling rivalry, or emotional distress across the family. Family therapy can be a powerful tool in these situations. It allows each family member to share their feelings, learn effective communication, and rebuild trust. The presence of an impartial professional can ease the emotional load and help uncover patterns of interactions that may be contributing to stress. In some families, physical abuse, substance abuse, or domestic violence may have created an environment of emotional suppression. Addressing these issues directly can improve the overall family dynamic. A safe, open dialogue is essential to begin this healing process. Challenges with Medical CareNavigating the clinical setting with a child who has a chronic health condition can be overwhelming. Many medical professionals focus primarily on symptoms and medications. There is often a lack of attention to the emotional and relational aspects of healing. Jini emphasized the importance of informed decision-making and resisting fear-based pressure from the medical community. Families should be encouraged to seek medical care that aligns with their values. This includes considering complementary methods that support both emotional and physical health. Family therapy and holistic practices can work alongside traditional care to address the full spectrum of needs. Unfortunately, finding holistic-minded practitioners can be difficult, especially in pediatric care. Legal concerns, insurance restrictions, and institutional policies often limit what doctors can recommend. Still, families can advocate for themselves by requesting second opinions, researching natural therapies, and seeking out professionals who respect their choices. Real-Life Examples and HopeJini shared stories from her personal life and those of her readers. These included examples where illness served a larger purpose in the family dynamic. In one case, a child’s severe condition helped parents avoid divorce, allowing the family unit to remain intact. Another story involved a medical doctor using Jini’s protocols to heal a stricture and avoid surgery. Despite professional limitations, the doctor acknowledged the effectiveness of holistic care, though he could not openly share it with patients. These examples illustrate both the positive effects of a supportive environment and the negative effects of a purely symptom-focused medical model. Real-life stories provide hope and inspiration. They show that change is possible, healing is real, and families can emerge stronger. These stories encourage open communication, emotional honesty, and the courage to explore unconventional healing paths. Empowering Families Through KnowledgeJini stressed the need for families to educate themselves. Understanding the emotional roots of illness and the importance of open communication can lead to better outcomes. A strong foundation of family support and effective communication can serve as a powerful tool in managing chronic disease. Parents must learn to recognize unhealthy family dynamics, whether they stem from physical abuse, poor communication, or high expectations. By doing their own emotional work, parents model resilience and become role models for healthy emotional expression. Resources such as books, online forums, podcasts, and community support groups can provide additional tools. Knowledge reduces fear and builds confidence. When parents feel empowered, they make better decisions and help their children thrive. ConclusionThe impact of family dynamics on childhood disease is profound. Emotional support, secure attachment, and open dialogue within the family unit can aid physical healing and improve quality of life. While chronic illnesses like IBD are complex and challenging, they also offer an opportunity for growth and transformation. Families who embrace this opportunity, commit to self-healing, and support their children emotionally can change not only their immediate circumstances but also the long-term patterns that affect future generations. Creating a supportive environment, improving social skills, and maintaining healthy family interactions are key elements in this journey. By listening to your gut and your heart, the path to healing becomes clearer for both child and parent alike. Through knowledge, compassion, and courage, families can navigate chronic illness with strength and grace. Are Stool Tests Worth It? Gut Health Facts You Should Know
As someone who has been helping people with digestive health for decades, I’ve seen trends come and go. One that has persisted is stool testing — also called fecal testing or gut microbiome testing. Many functional medicine practitioners, naturopaths, and even conventional doctors recommend it. The idea sounds appealing: send in a small stool sample and get a detailed report on your gut flora. Supposedly, it reveals the root cause of your digestive issues and guides you to the right treatment. But after decades of helping people heal themselves from Crohn’s, colitis, IBS and SIBO, I can tell you that stool testing is often not worth the hype or the cost. In this article, I’ll explain why, drawing on my own experience, along with the wisdom of my friend and colleague, Natasha Trenev, founder of Natren Probiotics. If you’d like to hear our full discussion in detail, here’s the complete video of our conversation: OR you can listen to the podcast version: Timestamps: 00:00 – Podcast intro & guest welcome 00:44 – Natasha’s background in digestive health 01:11 – Problems in the supplement industry 01:58 – Intro to stool testing topic 02:48 – Stool test = snapshot in time 03:08 – Overview of digestive tract & gut microbes 03:36 – Why harmful bacteria aren’t always the cause 04:07 – Issues with current stool test methods 04:58 – When stool testing may be valid 05:51 – Same treatment for most gut disorders 06:18 – Broad‑spectrum natural antimicrobials 06:50 – Lifestyle & cultural factors in gut health 07:18 – Microbiome diversity across cultures 08:07 – Antibiotics and gut recovery time 09:00 – Your gut microbiome is unique 09:30 – Hair mineral testing comparison 10:27 – Misleading results & wasted money 11:00 – Bogus probiotic recommendations 11:30 – Dedication to quality probiotics 12:37 – The soil‑based probiotic trend 13:22 – No long‑term safety studies 14:20 – Opportunistic nature of bacteria 15:20 – Risks of aggressive soil bacteria 16:11 – Chemical contamination & health 17:26 – Why Lactobacillus & Bifidobacteria are safe 18:43 – Cultural adaptation to diets 19:47 – The natto example from Japan 20:18 – Traditional food handling 21:09 – Autism rates & gut health 21:53 – Proven gut‑healing protocols 23:01 – Why stool tests miss key microbes 23:40 – Digestive tract function & bacteria 24:51 – Your body rebuilds annually 26:43 – Avoid unsafe probiotics 27:59 – Natren Healthy Trinity formula 28:45 – Why gelatin capsules are best 30:03 – Placing probiotics in correct gut area 31:00 – Importance of bifidobacteria 31:29 – Benefits of Lactobacillus bulgaricus 33:58 – How probiotic strains work together 34:28 – Healing takes time 35:01 – Lifelong probiotic use 36:19 – Processed food damage to gut 37:28 – The potato chip story 38:04 – Fixing supplement industry standards 39:57 – Arsenic in rice research 43:32 – Organic vs regenerative farming 44:05 – Private‑label supplement problems 45:14 – Need for trustworthy health products 45:52 – Daily microbiome care is essential 46:31 – Staying positive & focused 47:53 – Buy from local farmers 48:38 – Nature therapy for gut health 49:57 – Role of social connection 50:53 – Misuse of natural medicines 51:33 – Corporate takeovers of health brands 52:41 – Environmental factors in Crohn’s & colitis 53:13 – Most tests don’t reflect true gut health 54:14 – Return to traditional health wisdom 54:49 – Closing & invitation for questions What Stool Tests Claim to MeasureComprehensive stool tests, sometimes called comprehensive stool analysis claim to measure:
Some even suggest they can assess the overall health of your microbiome and predict your immune response. Why Stool Testing Seems AppealingWhen you’re dealing with bloating, chronic diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, or other digestive symptoms, you want answers. A stool test seems like a simple way to check your gut microbiota. You imagine taking the results to your healthcare provider and getting a targeted action plan. For people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, or suspected gut inflammation, it sounds like an essential diagnostic to have. Why Natasha and I Are SkepticalNatasha has spent over 60 years in the probiotic industry, working with top gastroenterologists, immunologists, and other medical specialists. She has reviewed thousands of research papers on gut microbiota, probiotics, and microbiome tests. In her experience, stool testing has serious limitations. Let’s look at them… A Snapshot in TimeA stool test captures microbial activity at one moment in time. Gut microbes can shift dramatically up to 60% in just 24 hours. Your results today may look very different tomorrow. Limited View of the Digestive TractYour digestive tract is about 27 feet long. Stool forms in the colon; just 9 feet of that length. Many important microbes live in the small intestine or along the gut lining, which stool tests can’t measure accurately. Your colon naturally contains 3-4 lbs of microbes at any time. Presence Does Not Equal ProblemFinding pathogenic bacteria in a stool sample does not mean they are causing your digestive issues. Some harmful bacteria can live quietly if kept in check by good gut bacteria. High Cost, Little ImpactComprehensive stool tests cost anywhere from $400 to $1,500. In most cases, the treatment plan would be the same regardless of the results: remove harmful bacteria, repopulate with good bacteria, make dietary changes, and heal the gut lining. When Stool Testing Might Be Worth ItThere are times when stool testing can be helpful:
Outside of these situations, Natasha and I usually recommend saving your money and focusing on restoring digestive health directly. Why the Gut Microbiome MattersYour gut microbiome affects:
When your gut microbiota is imbalanced – a condition known as dysbiosis – you may experience digestive problems, chronic diseases, and immune dysfunction. Good Gut Bacteria vs. Harmful Bacteria Good Gut Bacteria
Pathogenic bacteria can:
Some supplements contain soil-based organisms. These microbes evolved to live in soil, not in the human digestive system. They survive harsh environments by forming spores. While this makes them shelf-stable, it also makes them aggressive. Long-term safety in humans is unknown. Natasha has repeatedly refused to include these in the Natren brand because they are not proven safe. Proven Alternatives: What Natasha and I Recommend Use Broad-Spectrum Natural AntimicrobialsWild oregano oil and olive leaf extract can target harmful bacteria, yeast, and fungi. You don’t need a blood test or stool test to confirm the exact pathogen before starting these. Garlic, grapeseed extract, and hydrogen peroxide are also effective pathogen-killers, but they don’t tend to be well-tolerated by people with IBD. For a stubborn, or parasitic infection, use my Quad Synergy protocol. Repopulate With Safe ProbioticsNatasha formulated Natren’s Healthy Trinity — a trio of well-researched, human-native probiotics:
These strains have been studied for over 100 years and have decades of proven safety in humans. Improve Your Diet
Over and over, Natasha and I see clients spend hundreds on gut microbiome testing only to be told they have dysbiosis or an overgrowth of some bacteria. The treatment? Broad-spectrum antimicrobials and probiotics — exactly what we recommend without the expensive test. We’ve both helped people recover from severe IBS, IBD, and chronic diarrhea without ever doing a stool test. The same principles apply whether the gut flora is missing bifidobacterium species (for example) or is overrun with pathogenic bacteria. When to See a DoctorSeek immediate help if you experience:
These could signal colon cancer, severe infection, or another urgent health condition. My Action Plan for Gut Health
Healthy digestion is the foundation of overall health. The digestive tract plays a crucial role in your immune system, nervous system, and mood. Comprehensive stool analysis can have its place, but for most people, investing in proven gut-healing strategies — safe probiotics, dietary changes, and lifestyle adjustments — delivers better results. As Natasha and I have seen time and again, you don’t need expensive microbiome tests to start healing. You need consistent, safe, and well-researched tools to rebuild the health of your microbiome for life. You May Also Be Interested In:

Are Probiotic Pills Harmful? A Deep Dive With Gut Health Experts
Introduction
Natasha Trenev, Founder of Natren Probiotics and 750-year lineage yogurt-maker to royalty, and I (natural gut health expert, Jini Patel Thompson), discuss claims and interpretations made in this video with Dr. Sean Spencer, gastroenterologist. Together, we address controversial statements about probiotic supplements being harmful, possibly even fatal, and unpack the misinformation and lack of scientific understanding surrounding probiotics today. Podcast Show Notes 1. Fermented Foods and Microbial DiversityWe looked at the benefits of fermented foods. These foods appeared to support microbial diversity and help lower inflammation. There was discussion around whether the benefits came from the bacteria, their metabolites, or the fiber in the food. 2. Probiotics in Pill FormWe questioned the effectiveness of probiotic supplements in pill form. It was suggested that these might not work as well as fermented foods, which naturally help improve the microbiome and reduce inflammation markers. 3. Clinical Trials and Probiotic EfficacyThe way clinical trials are designed was brought up. Many trials may not be run by people who understand how live bacteria function. It was noted that we still do not have a clear definition of what a healthy microbiome looks like. 4. Health Implications and Public AwarenessMisinformation around probiotics is a big concern. There is still a lack of science-backed information available to the public. We talked about the need for better education on how probiotics work and their limits. 5. Probiotic Manufacturing and Market PracticesManufacturing practices were also discussed. Natasha described her method of freeze-drying probiotics along with their natural metabolites. This approach is rare in the industry but may lead to better results. Main Takeaways
This episode looked closely at how probiotics and fermented foods impact gut health. We challenged a number of common ideas and pointed out gaps in science and industry practices. More awareness and better standards are needed moving forward. What Are Probiotic Supplements?Probiotic supplements contain live microorganisms. These are often called good bacteria or beneficial microbes. These supplements aim to support digestive health and overall human health. Most probiotic products include strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. These probiotic strains are meant to help balance gut bacteria. They are also believed to assist in preventing digestive issues and inflammatory bowel disease. Some supplements claim to help with weight loss, irritable bowel syndrome, and regular bowel movements. However, the actual health benefits depend on the quality of the product and the condition of the person using it. The Problem With Most Probiotic Products Lack of StandardsThe dietary supplement industry does not follow strict regulations. There are no clear standards for probiotic supplementation. Many products include multiple species in one capsule. These species may compete with each other. They may release natural antimicrobials to survive, weakening the entire blend. According to Natasha, even well-known probiotic products often fail to meet scientific quality. Her probiotic labeling standard was read into the U.S. Congressional Record. Still, most companies ignore it. This leads to poor quality control and unverified claims. Live Bacteria May Not SurviveLive bacteria must survive storage, transport, and digestion. Many supplements do not ensure this. The number of colony-forming units (CFUs) listed on the label only shows how many bacteria were present at the time of packaging. By the time the capsule reaches the digestive tract, most may be dead. These capsules must pass through stomach acid and bile. Without protection, even beneficial bacteria cannot survive. A product may list 90 billion CFUs but deliver none to the intestinal tract. Risks and Side Effects For People With Health ConditionsUsing probiotics can cause problems in people with a weakened immune system. For example, premature infants or those using central venous catheters face higher risks. In such cases, live microorganisms may cause infections. Allergic reactions have also been reported. For people with serious medical conditions, probiotic supplementation must be approached with caution. Healthcare providers should evaluate each case before recommending any probiotic product. Misleading Clinical TrialsMany clinical trials use stool samples to analyze the gut microbiome. However, this only reflects bacteria in the large intestine. It does not show what happens in the small intestine, which is key for digestion. Some trials use mice to study probiotic effects. But the gut bacteria in mice are very different from humans. Lab mice have poor gut health. These differences make the results unreliable. One study claimed that probiotics impaired recovery of the gut microbiome after antibiotic use. Yet, it compared results to fecal transplants using the patient’s own stool. This ignored whether their pre-antibiotic gut was healthy in the first place. The Role of Fermented FoodsSome say fermented foods are a better option. Fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut do contain probiotic bacteria. They can support digestive health and immune function. But Natasha raised several concerns. Many people ferment foods at home without proper methods. Some just add salt, not live cultures. There are no standards. Harmful bacteria or yeast infections may occur. Also, some fermented foods contain bacteria like Lactobacillus plantarum. This strain may harm bifidobacteria, which are essential for gut health. So not all fermented foods offer the same beneficial effects. Why Most Probiotics FailMany probiotic products are made by third-party manufacturers. Brands do not always research, formulate, or test their own products. This leads to poor quality control. Without a vertically integrated process, the survival of active cultures cannot be guaranteed. Few companies preserve the intrinsic supernatant—beneficial metabolites created during fermentation. Natasha’s company, Natren, is one of the few that freeze-dries bacteria with these metabolites. Who Should Use Probiotics? Healthy PeopleHealthy individuals may benefit from probiotics. But only if the probiotic strains are well-researched and the product is of high quality. These people are less likely to experience side effects. People With Digestive IssuesPeople with digestive problems may try probiotic supplements. Conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, or lactose intolerance may respond well to the right probiotics. Still, every individual has a unique gut bacteria composition. The same supplement may have different effects on different people. Consult a Healthcare ProviderBefore starting any daily probiotic supplement, talk to your doctor. This is especially important if you have any health issues or are taking other medications. Only a health professional can assess the safety of probiotics in your situation. Summary and Recommendations
Probiotic supplements are not all the same. Many do not offer the health benefits they claim. Some may even be harmful. It is important to understand how probiotics work. Choose products made with care. Consult a healthcare provider to make sure they are safe for you. Gut health is essential to overall wellness. But restoring a healthy gut microbiome is complex. Use probiotics wisely and make informed choices. You May Also Be Interested In:
| Microplastic in Food, Water & Salt? Here’s How To Stay Safe | 03 sept. 2025 | ||
How Microplastic Affects Your Body and Gut and What You Can Do
In this episode of the Listen To Your Gut podcast, I spoke with probiotic pioneer Natasha Trenev about a deeply concerning topic: microplastic particles in the human body and their effect on our health. We’ve talked about many issues over the years, but this one has shocked us! The presence of microplastics in food, water, and the human bloodstream is not just a trend or headline. It is a crisis that affects the digestive system, the immune system, and every part of the body. You can watch the video of our discussion: Or listen to the podcast: Chapters (Main Topics)
Recent studies have found microplastic particles in almost every part of the human body. These include the brain, liver, kidneys, and even the placenta and breast milk. One study tested 23 men and 47 dogs. Every testicle examined had microplastic particles inside. That level of contamination shocked me. Another recent study reported that 4 out of 45 people had toxic levels of microplastics in their blood. Researchers at Harvard found that if microplastics are in your blood, your risk of heart attack or stroke increases by 450%. These tiny particles can even cross the blood-brain barrier. Natasha added that this is a serious concern. The biological systems of the body are constantly working, every second. Anything the body cannot digest, utilize, or eliminate will irritate or disrupt those processes. Microplastics are foreign to the human body. They are not meant to be there. Where Are These Microplastics Coming From?Natasha reminded me that this problem is not new. She spoke out over 50 years ago against the use of plastic in health food stores. No one listened then. Now, the plastic waste floating in the Pacific Ocean is said to be the size of the state of Texas. That plastic waste breaks down into microplastic particles. These particles are then found in bottled water, plastic packaging, and even our food supply. Microplastics are also entering the food chain through marine life. Fish like catfish and shellfish are filter feeders. They consume what’s at the bottom of the ocean, where microplastics settle. When we eat those animals, we take in those plastic particles too. This affects our digestive system and our immune system in ways we are just beginning to understand. Even salt is affected. Ocean salt, such as sea salt or Celtic sea salt, comes from evaporated seawater. That water may contain nanosized plastic particles. So those particles are left behind in the salt crystals. That’s why I now use only salt that comes from underground, ancient deposits that have not been exposed to microplastic pollution. Plastic Packaging and Bottled Water: Hidden DangersWe also talked about bottled water. Natasha and I both avoid drinking from plastic bottles. Even when water is cold, the chemicals from plastic can leach into the water. And our bodies absorb liquids faster than solids, which increases the risk. I buy water that comes in glass bottles, both for home and on the go. Natasha does the same. Plastic packaging is another major source of exposure. Natasha made the decision years ago to package her Natren probiotics in dark amber glass bottles with tin lids. She refuses to use plastic containers or plastic lids. She explained that tin lids offer the best protection for probiotics and prevent any interaction with the product. This level of commitment is rare. Most companies choose plastic packaging because it is cheaper and lighter. But that choice comes at a cost to health. And many people don’t realize the impact plastic packaging has on the contents inside. We have to be more mindful of what we buy and how it’s packaged. The Microwave Problem: Heat and PlasticMicrowaving food in plastic containers is a dangerous practice. Natasha and I discussed how heat causes the plastic to release toxic chemicals. Microwaves heat food from the inside out. This method of heating is not natural and was never tested over long periods. Back in 1968, when microwaves were first installed at UCLA, many students refused to use them. They didn’t trust them. And now we know why. Heating plastic containers in the microwave causes chemical bonds to break. That releases toxic chemicals like bisphenol A and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals. I encourage people to use a toaster oven instead. Get one that is stainless steel or ceramic-coated. Do not use anything with nonstick coatings like Teflon. And always use glass or ceramic containers for heating food. That small switch can reduce your microplastic exposure significantly. Related: Alternatives To Teflon Frying Pans Microbiome and Probiotic ProtectionOur gut microbiome is under attack. Microplastic particles can damage the gastrointestinal tract. They interfere with communication between neurotransmitters and may even block or irritate cell walls. Natasha emphasized that we now live in an environment where probiotics are not optional. They are necessary. Probiotics help maintain balance in the digestive system. But not all probiotics are equal. Natasha warns that many companies sell generic strains without understanding the precise species or how they behave in the human gut. These are living organisms. They need the right environment to thrive. Natren remains the only vertically integrated probiotic manufacturer in North America and the EU. That means they control the entire production process from strain to shelf. Natasha insists on using only what is scientifically supported. This level of detail matters. Especially now, when the food system, water sources, and environment are all contaminated. The Larger Problem: Environmental Health CrisisNatasha pointed out that our health crisis goes far beyond just microplastic particles. The air we breathe is also polluted. Here in British Columbia, we’ve seen the effects of wildfires. The smoke fills our lungs, our eyes burn, and we run expensive air filters just to breathe indoors. This pollution impacts our immune system and our microbiome. In the U.S., 80% of people are chronically ill. Yet Americans make up only 4% of the world population, while consuming 75% of the world’s pharmaceuticals. That’s a staggering statistic. It shows that the health problems are not isolated. They are systemic. Much of the problem is caused by short-sighted solutions. A new product comes out with fancy marketing, promising to fix digestion or detox the body. But people don’t realize that some of these colon cleanses and parasite cleanses strip the intestinal wall. And nothing is put back. Simple Actions to Reduce ExposureSo what can we do? Here are the changes I’ve made, and that Natasha recommends:
I wish we did not have to think about microplastic exposure in this much detail. But we do. This is the world we live in. Natasha said it best: “If we want to talk about loving the environment, the first place we need to start is by reducing our own plastic use.” That is why I invite everyone to make informed choices. Start by avoiding plastic where you can. Look at your water sources, your food packaging, and even your cookware. Every small change makes a difference. This isn’t fear-mongering. It’s just the reality of the modern world. The health effects of microplastics are serious. They affect the digestive system, the immune system, the heart, the brain, and even the blood. We cannot control everything. But we can control what we bring into our homes and into our bodies. Let’s start there. You May Also Be Interested In

All the Dirt on Soil-Based Organisms — Why They’re Not Real Probiotics
This blog post is based on a podcast episode featuring Jini Patel Thompson, international best-selling author and founder of Listen To Your Gut, and Natasha Trenev, founder of Natren probiotics. In their discussion, they explore the dangers of soil-based organisms (SBOs) and why they should not be considered true probiotics. You can either watch the video: Or listen to the podcast: Chapters (Main Topics)
Many people believe that soil-based organisms (SBOs) are probiotics. This belief has spread widely. It is even promoted by many supplement companies. But this idea is not supported by science. Soil-based organisms are not the same as regular probiotics. In fact, they can be harmful to your gut and overall health. In this article, we will explain why SBO probiotics should not be used as a replacement for traditional probiotic supplements. You will learn about the differences between beneficial bacteria and harmful bacteria. We will also look at the risks involved with taking soil-based probiotics. What Are Soil-Based Organisms?Soil-based organisms are bacteria found in the soil. They belong to the bacillus genus. One common type is Bacillus subtilis. These bacteria can form spores. This spore coat allows them to survive in harsh environments. They can even survive high temperatures, such as 400° Fahrenheit. Because of this, many companies promote them as probiotic supplements. They claim that SBOs support gut health. But this claim is not backed by long-term human studies. The truth is that soil-based probiotics are different from beneficial bacteria that live in the human gut. How Do Regular Probiotics Work?Traditional probiotics include species like lactobacillus and bifidobacteria. These probiotic strains have been used for decades. They help maintain a healthy microbiome in the digestive tract. These beneficial bacteria support the immune system. They also help prevent the growth of bad bacteria in the small intestine and large intestine. These bacteria are supported by clinical trials and human studies. They help with conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and ulcerative colitis. Why SBO Supplements Are RiskySBO supplements introduce foreign bacteria into the digestive system. These bacillus strains have not evolved inside the human gut. They have not developed a beneficial relationship with the human microbiome. Some experts believe these organisms are too aggressive. Natasha Trenev explains that these bacteria are “opportunistic” and their only goal is to multiply. She says, “They are pleomorphic. They can drop their cell wall and turn into other forms. They’re not stable, and they’re not safe.” Soil-based bacteria compete with fungi and molds in the soil. To survive, they must be strong. This strong nature may make them dangerous in the human digestive tract. They can kill both good and bad bacteria. This can lead to long-term side effects. They can also remain dormant in the gut. Their spores lie in wait. If the immune system weakens, these spores can activate. This could lead to health problems years later. Because these side effects are delayed, most people do not link their health issues to SBO supplements. FDA and Safety ConcernsThe FDA has allowed these products to be sold. But many experts are surprised by this. Soil-based probiotics have not gone through long-term human safety tests. Most companies self-approve their products without proper clinical trials. This lack of regulation puts your digestive health at risk. Jini Patel Thompson recalls, “I blogged about it and the CEO of a major company reached out. I asked for 20 years of human safety studies. He sent me nothing and I never heard from him again.” That alone raises serious concerns about the legitimacy and safety of these products. Soil-based organisms are not generally recognized as safe for everyone. People with autoimmune diseases or compromised immune systems should be especially careful. Using SBO supplements in these cases can make things worse. Are There Any Safe Uses?Some cultures use Bacillus subtilis in foods like natto. This is a fermented soybean dish from Japan. But the way it is eaten is very different from taking a capsule with billions of spores. A single serving of natto may be shared by many people. It is eaten occasionally, not daily. Jini, who lived in Japan for two years, explains, “It stinks. It’s slimy. People eat one tiny portion occasionally. That’s not the same as taking capsules daily.” In these cultures, the microbiome has adapted over generations. Their digestive systems can handle this specific species of bacteria. But the American gut microbiome has not developed the same tolerance. Taking high doses of soil-based bacteria daily is not the same as eating traditional probiotic foods. Problems with SBO MarketingMany companies market soil-based probiotics as miracle supplements. They promise quick results. They say SBOs will cure your gut issues, boost your immune system, and restore your healthy gut. But this is not supported by real science. Some practitioners even recommend these supplements. They say that SBOs work when nothing else does. But just because something works short-term does not mean it is safe. Killing candida or bad bacteria quickly might feel good. But what happens to your healthy microbiome in the long run? As Natasha points out, “The stronger the organism is, the more questionable its use in the body is.” A Better Way to Heal the GutIf you want to support gut health, use regular probiotics. Choose strains that have been studied in clinical trials. Look for products with lactobacillus and bifidobacteria. These strains have a history of safe use in the human gut. Also, support your digestive system with natural supplements. Wild oregano oil and elemental diet shakes are helpful. They can support the immune system and reduce inflammation. Probiotic foods are also a great addition to your diet. Fermented foods offer a natural way to build a healthy microbiome. ConclusionSoil-based organisms are not real probiotics. They are not part of the natural human gut microbiome. They have not been proven safe through long-term human studies. SBO supplements can disrupt the delicate balance of your digestive tract. They may lead to unknown side effects. Jini and Natasha’s discussion highlights the dangers of blindly trusting supplement marketing. Natasha reminds us, “This is not a marketing argument. This is a scientific argument.” Always choose well-researched, traditional probiotics. Your gut health is too important to risk. Do not fall for marketing claims. Understand the science. Listen to your gut. Your body is wise. It can heal. But it needs the right support. Use proven probiotic supplements. Avoid risky SBO products. Choose health with knowledge and care. Ozempic Destroys The Gut: What You Can Do
Vital Conversation Highlighting the Serious Ill Effects of Ozempic
This blog is based on a detailed conversation between Jini Patel Thompson (Founder: Listen to Your Gut) and Natasha Trenev (Founder: Natren Probiotics). They discussed the deep damage caused by GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, including effects on the digestive system, muscle and bone loss, and mental health. Their insights highlight what people need to know and do if they are using or stopping these drugs. 👉 Topics Covered:
Ozempic is part of a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. It was developed to help with blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes. GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic mimic a natural hormone that helps regulate blood glucose levels and feelings of fullness. These GLP-1 medications slow gastric emptying and lower blood sugar levels. Ozempic and Weight LossOver time, Ozempic became a popular weight loss drug. For weight loss, a higher dose is used. But this increased dose brings many potential side effects. Recent reports and clinical trials have shown that these GLP-1 agonists can cause serious damage to the digestive system. What Happens to the Stomach?The drug paralyzes stomach muscles. This condition is called stomach paralysis or gastroparesis. When the movement of food is stopped or slowed too much, it can lead to a backup of food in the stomach. This undigested food can rot and cause nausea, bloating, and stomach pain. Gastrointestinal side effects become more common as drug administration continues. Impact on the Digestive TractThe digestive tract is meant to move food smoothly from the stomach to the intestines. Ozempic disrupts this natural process. This leads to problems throughout the gastrointestinal tract. In some cases, bowel obstructions and intestinal blockage have been reported. This can cause abdominal pain, constipation, and loss of appetite. Gut Microbiome DamageThe gut microbiome includes trillions of gut bacteria. These bacteria help digest food, support immune function, and influence mood. GLP-1 receptor agonists can disrupt this balance. When food remains undigested, it becomes fuel for harmful bacteria. This shift in gut microbiota affects overall gut health and digestive health. Emotional and Mental EffectsGut health is linked to brain health through the gut-brain axis. The gut produces neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. These chemicals regulate mood and emotions. When the microbiome is damaged, production of these feel-good chemicals drops. This can lead to depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Social media has even coined terms like “Ozempic face” and “Ozempic butt” to describe the visible effects of extreme weight loss caused by these popular drugs. Muscle and Bone LossGLP-1 drugs can reduce body weight by cutting muscle and bone mass. After stopping the drug, people often regain fat but not muscle or bone. This can increase the risk of falling and lead to long-term health problems. Healthy bone and muscle are essential for metabolic health and overall health. Potential Risks and Side EffectsThere are many potential risks linked to GLP-1 medications:
The Mayo Clinic and University of British Columbia have studied these effects. Drug makers like Novo Nordisk are aware of the issues, but wide use of these drugs continues. Is There a Way to Heal?Yes, healing the digestive system is possible. The first step is to gradually stop taking the drug with the guidance of a healthcare provider. You cannot quit Ozempic cold turkey as it can cause severe rebound effects and dangerous blood sugar spikes. Simultaneously, support the body’s natural healing process. A probiotic protocol can help restore the gut microbiome. Recommended Recovery Protocol
This plan helps digestion, rebuilds gut bacteria, and supports bone and muscle health. Adding probiotic-rich foods and avoiding processed, glyphosate-laden food can also improve results. Customize Your Healing PlanEach person reacts differently to GLP-1 drugs. The majority of patients may need a custom plan. Some people experience a detox reaction (Herxheimer effect) when starting probiotics. For those with chronic stress or autoimmune conditions, it’s best to start slow. A quarter dose may be enough at first. Speak with a knowledgeable consultant for guidance. Drug administration must be managed carefully to avoid worsening symptoms. Timely medical attention is needed for serious side effects. Why the Problem ContinuesThe wide use of these drugs shows a deeper issue. People want quick fixes. But weight gain is often caused by poor food quality, low nutrient intake, and emotional pain. Many take GLP-1 medications hoping for fast results. They are not warned about the increased risk of serious medical conditions. Companies focus on profits, not healing. Legacy health brands offer education and individual support. They believe in helping the body heal itself. Newer brands often copy pharmaceutical models and treat symptoms only. Final ThoughtsGLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic can severely harm gut health and the digestive tract. These drugs cause a range of gastrointestinal side effects, affect the gut microbiome, and may lead to irreversible damage. Recovery is possible, but it requires the right supplements, a custom plan, and expert support. Use proven supplements like Natren probiotics, Bone Matrix for bone density loss, and Absorb Plus for muscle wasting. Do not wait for serious problems. Start healing your gut today with safe, effective methods. You May Also Be Interested In:
| Hair Mineral Analysis Test: Benefits, Cost & My Results | Podcast with Jill Norris | 25 juin 2025 | ||
Hair Mineral Analysis Test: Prevention at Its Best
Join me for this insightful podcast episode with Jill Norris, RN, as we dive into the results of my own Hair Mineral Analysis Test (HMAT). Jill shares her experience helping thousands of clients over the past 3 years and explains how the minerals stored in our hair tissues provide a clear map of what’s happening in our body, especially with our endocrine system (adrenals and thyroid). You’ll also learn how hair mineral analysis tests can guide detox protocols using atom-sized minerals to safely chelate (remove) heavy metals from the body. What Is a Hair Mineral Analysis Test?A hair mineral analysis test (also called HMAT or mineral hair test) measures the levels of key minerals and toxic metals stored in your hair tissue. It’s different from a blood test because it shows what your body has been storing long term not just what’s circulating in your blood at the moment. This simple, non-invasive test can reveal deeper patterns of deficiency, toxicity, and hormonal imbalance that are easy to miss through standard lab work. Key Moments during our interview:0:00 Intro – What *is* Hair Mineral Analysis? 0:04 Meet Jill Norris, RN & Her Recovery Story 1:05 Return to Eidon & Learning the Test 1:28 Why Jill Studied Hair Analysis 2:01 Minerals 101: Na/K Pumps & Cell Energy 2:49 Sodium‑Potassium Ratio (2.4 Target) 3:22 First Priority: Balancing Electrolytes 4:04 Hidden Heavy Metals in Hair Samples 5:33 Detox Pathways: Bowel, Hydration, Sauna 5:51 Jini’s Hair Test – Travel‑Stress Context 7:37 Food, Sleep & Immune Stress Links 8:42 Old‑School vs Modern Lab Reference Ranges 11:09 Significant Ratios & Fight‑or‑Flight Flag 12:12 Low Na/Mg = Chronic Adrenal Fatigue 13:46 Salt Cravings & Practical Electrolyte Tips 14:28 High Calcium & Hard‑Water Factors 19:14 “Calcium Shell” & Past Trauma 22:51 Copper, Estrogen & Mental‑Health Tie‑in 24:32 Zn‑Cu Ratio as Inflammation Marker 26:50 Elevated Uranium – Granite/Well‑Water Risk 30:58 Heavy Metals & Thyroid Disruption 33:20 Minerals vs. Vitamins – The Missing Focus 34:52 Soil Depletion, Biodynamics & Food Quality 40:46 Media Stress vs. Personal Control 41:25 Reading Core Ratios (Ca/P, Ca/K, Zn/Cu) 44:06 Ca‑Mg Balance & Blood‑Sugar Swings 46:14 Potassium Repletion & Muscle‑Cramp Fix 52:32 Muscle‑Testing Basics & Practitioner Bias 56:00 Iron Levels & Anemia Nuances 58:55 Zinc‑Selenium for Mineral‑Based Chelation 1:03:10 Hospital Electrolytes & “4‑Lows” Pattern 1:05:53 Oxalates, Soaking Grains & Cooking Greens 1:10:05 Ordering Your Own Hair Test Kit 1:12:07 Wrap‑Up & Final Thoughts Key Insights from the Podcast Minerals & Thyroid Function
We also discuss how minerals reflect or indicate our emotional state – yes, stress is shown in mineral levels and ratios! How a Hair Mineral Test Helps with Heavy Metal DetoxJill routinely uses mineral hair analysis tests to design safe, effective protocols to detox heavy metals like mercury, lead, and aluminum. The protocol usually starts by balancing your electrolyte minerals, then using targeted support (like zinc and selenium) to draw out the toxic metals. If you’re wondering whether your symptoms could be related to hidden toxicity, a hair analysis for mineral deficiency and metal load could give you the answers you need. Anemia – Tissue vs. Blood Levels of IronWe end the podcast with a discussion of iron and anemia. Jill points out that if your tissue levels of iron are good, then you need to get a blood panel done to check for iron binding capacity. If the HMAT show your tissue levels of iron are in the acceptable range, then taking more iron is not the solution. The Iron Binding Capacity Panel (blood test) should reveal an issue with how your body is utilizing iron to make hemoglobin, and if something is going wrong with that pathway. Or, you might be B12 deficient. You can also check this by looking at your Cobalt level on the HMAT. Remember to take B12 in liquid form (like MultiAbsorb) or sublingual. If you’d like to get your own HMAT, you can order the test and work directly with Jill via zoom. My Personal Experience After Doing the Hair Mineral Analysis TestI immediately implemented Jill’s suggestion of adding celtic sea salt to water, instead of just eating it. And WOW. At the first sip, my body said, “YES!!” Who knew salt in water (or herbal tea) could make such a difference? I’ve been making my own herbal infusions of stinging nettle in hot water and now I add a pinch of salt as well. Jill is not familiar with Trace Matrix and the potent ability of fulvic/humic to chelate heavy metals, so I also added that to the protocol she gave me. If you’ve used my Muscle Matrix blend, you’ll know it already contains potassium. But for someone as deficient as me, I had to take extra potassium (I added it to Muscle Matrix) and that alone has been a game-changer. Muscle cramps do not even occur, and I have more energy. Where to Get a Hair Mineral Analysis Test KitReady to try this yourself? You can order the best hair mineral analysis test kit and work directly with Jill via Zoom. | Challenges & Solutions for Elemental Diet Success | 28 mars 2023
Join me in this video as I speak with Dr. Roy & Debbie Steinbock on the challenges and solutions for elemental diet success. Roy & Debbie have been prescribing and supporting thousands of clients through an elemental diet for over 15 years. They have tons of experience dealing with all the challenges people face and supporting them through the process. Check out the elemental diet success program here.My biggest takeaway from this call is learning that Debbie and Roy start people on anti-microbials (like wild oregano, olive leaf) one to two weeks before starting an elemental diet. This way, they can go through the die-off effect (Herxheimer) in stages and not confuse the die-off/detox with the elemental formula, or attribute their symptoms to intolerance of the shakes. Brilliant! If you’ve considered going on an elemental diet for SIBO, food allergies, IBD etc. then this discussion will give you some great guidelines to follow. We start by discussing what’s happening with children’s health; why are they sicker and diagnosed with so many formerly-adult diseases? And why are gut disorders getting harder to treat and taking longer to heal? Debbie and Roy outline what kind of clients benefit from doing an elemental diet, and for how long. They also go over the difficulties people encounter when they go on an exclusively elemental diet; both physical and mental/emotional. And how they support people through this process. I ask them if they have seen the same kind of success when people do a half elemental diet, or combine it with low residue foods? And then the Steinbocks tell us about their own personal experience with using an elemental diet for their own health. Listen as a podcast, or watch the video. Any questions, just post them in the Comments section below. Listen NowAND don’t forget to check out the Steinbock’s elemental diet success program
| LTYG Podcast: Iodine, the Thyroid and Adrenals | 13 mars 2023 | ||
Have you struggled with thyroid issues? Do you suspect your hormones are out of balance? Do you do too much, have poor boundaries around your time and energy, and run your adrenals like a beat horse? We started this discussion with me asking Dr. Scott Tyler ND to tell us what’s in his personal medicine bag? What does he always have on hand and ready to go? This quickly segued into a meaty discussion on thyroid function and iodine supplementation (if you want to jump ahead to the iodine and thyroid bit, start at 5:00 minutes) – do NOT miss this one! Followed by a discussion of the adrenals and once again how the mind/emotions are integral to healing both thyroid and adrenal issues. If you’ve been struggling with thyroid issues; fatigue, weight gain, loss of memory, feeling cold all the time, hair loss – then you will find this podcast enlightening and liberating. Oh and BIG NEWS: If you’re currently on one of my StrictureHeal protocols (which use iodine) you no longer have to monitor your thyroid! Dr. Tyler will tell you why. Video first and scroll down to the bottom if you prefer to listen as a podcast (here or on your favorite platform). Here is some more support/evidence for Dr. Tyler’s advice: “Dr. Michael B. Schachter says, “The treatment dose when a person is iodine insufficient is generally between 12.5 mg and 50 mg daily. Preliminary research indicates that if a person is iodine insufficient, it takes about three months to become iodine sufficient while ingesting a dosage of 50 mg of iodine daily and a year to achieve that while ingesting a dosage of 12.5 mg of iodine daily. For those who are interested in maintained dosages after disease and deficiencies have been dealt with understand that your thyroid gland alone needs about 6 mg of iodine per day for optimal function; the breasts of a woman will need approximately 5 mg/day (women with larger breasts need more); and other body tissues such as your adrenal glands, thymus, ovaries, hypothalamus, and pituitary gland need about 2 mg/day. Thus for optimal wellness adults should consider approximately10 to 12 mg/day.” And from the prestigious Orthomolecular Medicine association: “Feeling tired, having low energy or depression, gaining weight, memory problems, having dry skin, dry mouth or immune system issues? There is good chance your body needs iodine supplementation. The recommended daily amount of iodine by Dr. G. E. Abraham is 0.1-0.3 ml Lugol containing 12.5-37.5 mg elemental iodine. This is the amount of iodine needed for whole body sufficiency, based on a recently reported iodine/iodide-loading test.” As I mentioned in the call, I use the potassium iodide we sell in the Shoppe and it is 25 mg per drop. I take 1 drop per day. At some point, I will probably drop that to 25 mg every second day. We close out the call with a discussion of the assault on natural healthcare that’s currently happening in Canada, the USA and worldwide. We discuss ways to resist and also to create a parallel reality outside of the illegal and draconian controls being levied on humans at this time. What’s in Dr. Scott’s Medicine Bag?In case of emergency or natural disaster, Dr. Scott has these items packed and ready to go:
Dr. (Allen) Scott Tyler is a second generation Naturopathic physician, following in his father’s footsteps. He graduated from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, in 1986, and has practiced in Langley BC since. He developed a keen interest in conditions that relate to metabolic dysfunction, particularly hypothyroidism. He has since co-authored a book, “A Pound of Prevention” in 1995 with his father Dr. Allen N. Tyler, and is presently working on a book of his own about thyroid disease. He participated in a private herbal product company in BC, “Bowen Island Botanicals”, that specialized in organic herbal tinctures. He served as vice president and a board member for 10 years with the Northwest Naturopathic Convention, chaired the Canadian Naturopathic Education and Research Society, and sat on several committees of the BC College of Naturopathic Physicians. Dr. Tyler established a free clinic for the homeless, in Langley at The Salvation Army, with his lifelong friend Dr. Ted Sleigh. In 2018 he joined the Boucher College Clinic as a supervisor. He believes that the future of the profession lies squarely in the hands of students and new graduates, and continues to teach regularly at his own office as a satellite clinic of the school. He has no plan to retire anytime soon, and so, continues practicing out of the oldest federally recognized commercial building (c.1889) in “Langley Prairie”, at Murrayville. He spends his free time on his hobby farm, where he lives with his wife and one of their two daughters, and her family. Dr. Tyler does not have a website, but you can reach him the old-fashioned way, by phone: Langley Naturopathic Clinic, Langley, BC, Canada 1-604-530-3130
| Why Did I Manifest This Disease? | 24 févr. 2023 | ||
We had some GREAT questions come in from a member of my Lazer Tapping program (mind/body/spirit self-healing technique) and I just had to record a video reply! Why Did I Manifest This Disease?The question reads: “What kind of support can be offered specifically around diving into & processing the emotional baggage behind the crohn’s and the gut? What support is available for guidance on getting deeper into the emotions in the gut & the meaning behind having manifested this disease?”
If you prefer to listen to this as a podcast, scroll down, or access on your favorite podcast platform. I love the way she has already grokked the distinction of this particular disease. Because anyone familiar with the work of Louise Hay (looking at the metaphysical causes for physical illness/malfunction) already knows that where & what in the body is an important part of the message your higher self is sending you, via your physical body. Map your pathologyAs I say in the video, grab your journal and go through these questions. It doesn’t matter which health issue you have (why did I manifest this disease?), the exploration process is the same: 1/ What’s bugging you? When you look at your life, what do you wish could be different? – job, living situation, daily life What’s not working for YOU? What does your soul wish was different? 2/ When you look back on your childhood – go back to in utero if you can – feel into what was happening, imagine how you might have felt? Go through every childhood memory, write them down (bullet points are good). Go through your whole life to date. 3/ AFTER you’ve made that list, let it sit there for a few days, then come back and see where the common points are… Was there a recurring emotion? Did the same emotional state keep showing up? What themes do you notice? Any traits, patterns, or beliefs that occurred repeatedly? 4/ Use your favorite technique to connect to your body, feel for what’s there… It feels___________. Breathe. What wants to come forward today? What’s ready to be dealt with today? You can do this as a DAILY Practice. If you need help, check out my Guided Connection: Place Your Consciousness Inside Your Body 5/ Become mindful of your daily life. How do I respond to events throughout my day? When do I become stressed? Notice the FIRST sign of stress – develop your sensitivity to catch it when it first starts. Notice which people, situations, relationships trigger you. It’s not what happens to you, it’s how you respond. Become your own detective; notice what triggers you, and why? 6/ Notice what parts of your body feel painful. Start tapping on just the physical pain. FEEL into the pain and describe it; burning, throbbing, sharp, dull, aching, stabbing, sore etc. Give your pain permission to exist. Follow the pain if it moves around your body; if you become aware of new places that feel painful, tap on each new occurrence. If you haven’t tried Lazer Tapping yet, come do a Free session with me. I encourage you to actually WRITE DOWN your answers to these questions and create a roadmap for your healing journey. Remember, the journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step. Once you have the answers, you can use whichever mind/body/spirit healing modality you prefer: Lazer Tapping, hypnotherapy, craniosacral, somatic experiencing, etc.
| Should People Managing Inflammation Avoid Natren’s Dairy Based Probiotics? | 16 févr. 2023 | ||
The Effects of Probiotics on Inflammation
Join me and Natasha Trenev, founder of Natren probiotics, as we answer another question from an LTYG reader. This week’s question reads: “Many people find dairy pro-inflammatory. Should people managing inflammation avoid Natren’s dairy-based probiotics?” Don’t forget to download my FREE eBook, What You Need to Know About Probiotics! Transcription: Many people find find dairy pro-inflammatory. Should people trying to manage inflammation avoid your dairy-based probiotics? Yeah that’s a loaded question you know dairy is one of the best suited culturing mediums for these bacteria that’s why they’re called lactobacillus meaning they are milk bacteria so that’s their favorite food if you’re not specifically allergic to dairy I would say take the dairy product it’s not going to cause more inflammation unless you’re specifically allergic to it. You’re allergic to the components of milk basically the the protein part the the lactose can be handled because your body can be reminded how to produce the enzyme and the bacteria will produce the enzyme for you but milk has the complete nourishment for these bacteria so that they can do the best job for you. And I’ve fought this for almost 50 years this business about anti-milk and you know the the cultures that were healthy consumed you know dairy products that were fermented with proper bacteria on a daily basis so if you don’t have an allergy to milk I encourage you to take the milk products. Can I ask you a quick question there do the dairy based powders so you have the the loose powder and then you have the capsules this is not Healthy Trinity we’re talking about the other lines, when they’re the ones that are cultured on dairy do the powders contain the dairy proteins. Yes they do but they’ve been fermented. And how about the capsules? When you when you have the powder inside the capsules does that same thing you just have less of the supernatant in the capsule than you do in the powder. Okay so that might be a place to start then to test your tolerance and for me because I have scar tissue in my throat i can’t swallow pills I just take the capsules I open them up and I mix them in room temperature water but that would be a great way to start testing. And also because I did a couple of very intensive teleseminars with a PHD in immunology and a bunch of experts on there where we talked about the whole issue of allergies and intolerance and you know how that is very much a learned way of being in the body. So you know we may be well we’ve been off milk for a long time or we’ve been consuming pasteurized gross milk products so our body said forget milk but we can. There’s a certain amount of re-education there that can take place by kind of like homeopathy introducing very small amounts so for me if I was wanting to do that I would start with maybe taking one capsule of the dairy based and mixing it with five or six capsules of the non-dairy and taking that together that’s a good idea. Yeah that’s a good thing you brought up you know we have the healthy start system which has all the three bacteria that’s found in the Healthy Trinity capsule so what we do is we have the same bacteria with different delivery mechanisms and different food so that those bacteria can interact with your body and we are unique nitrogen is still unique. I can assure you there is nobody that has our system or nobody that produces the bacteria with the supernatant which means the original fermentation and products which are so important to assist the bacteria to take hold on the intestinal wall and those compounds are also important as messengers and you know interacting with the 100 billion neurons in your GI tract which is the second brain and the immune system come on over to listentoyourgut.com and grab my free ebook what you need to know about probiotics. | Mother Issues and Wounding | 26 avr. 2022
Mother issues and wounding – the heart-belly loop. Was your mother unwilling or unable to meet your emotional, physical, or spiritual needs? Did you not receive enough love or nurture from your mother? Let’s heal the physical and energetic link between our heart and our belly (Hara, Dan Tien, source of lifeforce energy) in relation to mother issues and wounding caused by our relationship with our mother. Even if you were given away at birth, you still spent almost a year listening, developing, growing, to the sound of your mother’s heartbeat. Your belly and her belly fully symbiotic through the umbilical cord. I did not even realize the significance of this, in terms of releasing mother-wounds, until one of my horses brought it to my attention! Let’s heal this feedback loop of lack of nurture/love that circles between the heart and the belly. ➡️Get just this session here. ➡️ Shop all Single Sessions here. ➡️Or do the Lazer Tapping Course, plus over 20 guided video tapping sessions here. | My #1 Self-Healing Tool – Transform Pain, Disease, Fear, Poverty, Anxiety, Obesity | 17 janv. 2022
I created this game-changer healing course specifically for my readers and others who are struggling with chronic health issues, disempowerment, lack of abundance, unsupportive relationships, and boring in-a-rut lives. Because our unresolved/unhealed crap holds us back! This is my version of EFT or acupressure tapping – and it has been the cornerstone of not only healing myself physically, but also healing relationships (even abusive ones), unleashing my talents, and bringing in the money-honey – even when 4 banks in a row had turned us down (I tell you that story in my International Bestseller, Listen To Your Gut). You’ve heard speakers and successful people say, over and over again, that the ONLY thing holding us back in life, is ourselves. IT’S TRUE. And this course will teach you how to laser-focus in on your particular blocks and saboteurs and release them! FEEL your emotions, put them into FLOW Let’s heal the pain & trauma that’s underneath the emotions Re-connect with your body & suppressed emotions. Transform negative thoughts, pain, trauma, poverty, into positivity! Lazer Tapping is an integrated mind/body/spirit healing modality; healing, shift, release or transformation takes places across all levels of the self. Many healers and shamans assert that all dis-ease begins first in the emotional or energy body and then is expressed through the physical body. In my own healing journey, I’ve come to align with an aboriginal belief that the spirit (or higher self) tries to speak to us, but if we don’t listen, then the spirit uses our physical body to send us the message. Because it is much harder to ignore pain, discomfort, malfunction, danger in our physical body, than it is to ignore intuition, gut feeling, or signs and symbols. Once you get fluent in Lazer Tapping you will be AMAZED at this powerful healing tool you now have at your fingertips! Literally. Come and try a FREE SESSION and experience it for yourself. | Two Different Types of Constipation | 28 déc. 2021
Before looking at treatments for constipation, it is important to first identify which kind of constipation you have. Through the course of my research, consultations with clients, feedback from readers, and my own struggle with constipation, I have come to identify two different types of constipation. Since I have not come across any labels for these in the medical literature (or perhaps I just didn’t read widely enough), I have made up my own labels to distinguish between these two different types of constipation. I call them peristaltic constipation and stenosis constipation. Of course, while most people seem to suffer from one or the other, there are people who suffer from a combination of the two. 1. Peristaltic Constipation This type of constipation can consist of many different symptoms or factors, but the defining elements are as follows:
Colonic massage can really help get your bowels moving and assist your body’s peristaltic mechanism. 2. Stenosis Constipation I came up with the name for this one based on the medical label of anal stenosis (narrowing, tightness or stricture of the anal canal). Stenosis constipation means that you experience one or more of the scenarios below:

Shop all Absorb Plus lines and flavors here. **Note, we have had many readers write in asking if they can add more than the recommended number of scoops in their shakes – and if there are any downsides to this. In my book, The IBD Remission Diet, I talk about why I formulated Absorb Plus to have roughly 27 grams of protein per serving. I based that calculation on bodybuilders’ protein intake. Because if you ingest more protein than your body can utilize, it will excrete it via urine. Thus, I recommend my readers not ingest more than 1 shake per hour for efficient protein utilization. And be sure to drink your shakes slowly for maximum nutrient retention/utilization!

| How Past Lives Can Affect Your Current Life & Body | 11 oct. 2021 | ||
Whether you believe in past lives, or not, is not really important. You may view time as linear, or you may subscribe to the more current view in physics of time as multi-layered, circular, enfolding into itself in multiple holograms, etc. You could view the whole concept of past/other lives as simply symbolic representations from your subconscious. It’s all good! I grew up in the evangelical Christian church (although my father is Hindu) and I didn’t believe in past lives either… until my health and my spiritual pathway ‘forced’ me into this exploration – as I talk about in the video below. If you have a chronic condition, or acute/severe condition or accident/trauma, or perhaps a very sticky yet negative relationship – these could all originate in past/other lifetimes. Or in the symbolic representations of your subconscious! Regardless, perhaps they are coming forward for healing… If you prefer, here is the podcast audio-only version of this video: This is one of the monthly LIVE Tapping Support and Q&A sessions included in my Lazer Tapping course membership. Join me for a FREE session today and see how it feels to your body. If you’d like to do past life regression therapy, look for a certified hypnotherapist that specializes in past lives. My children and I have all had sessions with Jenny Andrews and she’s fantastic! If you want just information about past lives that may be involved in your current situation, then a good psychic or healing intuitive will likely be able to give you some information or insight into anything that’s pertinent. I can highly recommend Dr. Juliet Ghodsian (or Jenny Andrews) for that. If you have a story about your own process of healing that involves past/other lives, I’d love to hear it!

| Meditation with Horses for Anxiety, Loneliness or Fear | 17 mai 2021 | ||
Those of you who’ve been subscribed for a while know that sometimes I share healing experiences that I create with my herd of horses. Join us again today, as we take you on a guided journey to release anxiety, fear or loneliness from your body & mind. Followed by gentle music and being with the herd and dogs out in nature. You may also like to use this before bed to ease into sleep. If you prefer, here is the podcast audio-only version of this meditation: I co-created this guided meditation with the herd at the request of my son, Hugo, who landed in the UK on April 23rd and went straight into lockdown quarantine at the soccer (football) school he’s attending for the next two months. He was in a 12×8′ room with only enough floor space for a yoga mat, in solitary confinement for 7 days! Meals were dropped off outside the door. He was only allowed to leave the room to shower or use the toilet. His isolation was worse than an incarcerated criminal, because at least they’re allowed to go outside once a day and they leave their jail cell for meals. What governments are doing in the name of ‘covid’ makes me a tad crazy sometimes. How many children are dealing with split custody with their parents living apart? So they have to go into solitary jail cells just to see their parents? Madness! We negotiated hard and by Day 3 they allowed him outside (alone) for 20 minutes twice per day. On the flip side, I’ve been discussing with Hugo why he chose this experience… He could have quarantined with Dad for 10 days and then attended the school. But he was adamant that he just wanted to ‘get going’ with his destiny/passion (at that time, they told him school quarantine would only be 5 days). Why has he voluntarily chosen this difficult trial that could make even adults lose their mind? I don’t know when he’ll have the answers to that question, perhaps it won’t be for a few months or even a year, but this meditation, along with this other one (also with my herd), Lazer Tapping sessions, and a Zoom session with the horses have all combined to help him stay sane, avoid deep trauma and mature in a positive way. Life hey? The challenges never cease. Hopefully this video can go out into the YouTube universe and help many more people struggling with pressure, stress and isolation. And if you have kids or teenagers, definitely share it with them. They are all struggling, even though they may appear to be fine.
| How to Reduce Herxheimer Reaction & Detox Sensitivity | 31 mars 2021 | ||
Linsy’s Struggle with Herxheimer Reaction
My assistant Linsy is known around here as the Queen of Herx. This is because her healing journey involved just off-the-charts sensitivity and massive reactions to any kind of anti-pathogen or detox agent that resulted in the Herxheimer Reaction (pathogen die-off). In addition to her sensitivities, she had extensive food and environmental allergies. If all of this sounds familiar to you, then you will likely learn a lot of helpful tips and tricks from my interview with Linsy below. Linsy’s Healing JourneyAs someone who has walked a difficult pathway of healing from IBD, Linsy is now clear of any colitis symptoms. And her allergies and sinus issues are almost completely cleared up. She also continues to follow some of the protocols in Listen To Your Gut; taking ongoing healing supplements for her gut, while also being proactive on the mind/body aspects of healing. You can also download this as a Podcast, or listen to the audio here: Show NotesJini Patel Thompson interviews her assistant Linsy (the Queen of Herx) for in-depth info and strategies on how she dealt with her off-the-charts sensitivities and still managed to heal her ulcerative colitis using entirely natural methods. | How Vulnerability and Authenticity Heal Us | 17 avr. 2020
You may numb your feelings to protect yourself, but in actuality you’re just driving your pain deeper into your physical body. EFT expert Annabel Fisher interviews me (Jini Patel Thompson) on her radio show, and we discuss how moving out of numbing and into courageous vulnerability is the beginning of root-level healing for both your emotional/spiritual body and your physical body. I share stories from my own life, as well as process and share tools for you to get out of the numb zone and reconnect to your authentic self and true feelings. We also discuss the difference between being authentic and being vulnerable, as well as the appropriate (healthy) times or situations to dwell primarily in one or the other. Annabel intersperses our discussion with her previously-recorded interviews with two men (Brian Johnstone and Paul Zelizer) who discuss what being vulnerable means to them and what they have learned in their own process of opening their heart and sharing their full truth. NOTE: We reference the work of Brene Brown a number of times, so if you missed my previous post about Brene (where you can watch her excellent videos), then just click here to check out the fabulous Brene Brown. | How To Measure WiFi and Cell Phone Radiation | 18 juil. 2019
How To Measure WiFi and Cell Phone Radiation
As the mother of three children – with thinner skulls, higher water content in their skulls (= higher conductivity) and undeveloped immune systems – it is very important to find out what levels of microwave RF radiation my kids are being exposed to, so that I can take measures to protect them where needed. So the first component of protecting your kids from wireless radiation involves testing and measuring their daily environment for WiFi signal strength – school, home, dance or gymnastics studio, friends’ houses, etc. Anywhere your kids spend over an hour continuously should be tested (in my opinion) so at least you can get a good idea of their daily radiation exposure. Baubiologie – standard Building Biology testing methods – lists RF safety readings in the home (especially in sleeping areas) in the following manner: No Concern – less than 0.10 microwatts/m2 (microwatts per meter squared) Slight Concern – 0.10 – 10 microwatts/m2- Severe Concern – 10 – 1000 microwatts/m2 Extreme Concern – greater than 1000 microwatts/m2 Magda Havas PhD recommends that (especially for children) microwave radiation levels do not exceed 0.10 microwatts/cm2 (per centimetre squared) and indoor areas do not exceed .001 microwatts/cm2. In my teleseminar with her, she said: “We did a study just last– a few years ago, itʼs just coming out this year, where we tested the response of the heart to microwave radiation and the arc exposure was 0.3 microwatts/cm2, so itʼs 3 times higher than that guideline that I just mentioned – and several of the people we tested blindly, so it wasnʼt a psycho-somatic response, they developed tachycardia which is a rapid heart rate and arrhythmia instantly as soon as we exposed them to the radiation from a cordless phone at 2.4 GHz. So, if adults start having those symptoms and I know quite a few adults who have them, they suddenly feel; their heart starts beating, they have this pressure and pain in the chest area, theyʼre having an anxiety attack, thatʼs how the interpret it, or theyʼre having a heart attack and they donʼt know which and it scares them incredibly. Well, children are now beginning to have these problems.” Once you know what you’re dealing with, then you can take steps to reduce or eliminate their radiation load – I’ll get into all that in a separate article. For now, let’s just look at what RF meters are on the market, at what price, and what each of them do to measure wifi signal strength – so that you can find the right one for your needs and budget. As a mom, you’ll likely want to test primarily for:
The Main Differences Between Meters The main distinctions between the different types of meters (and hence the price) usually boils down to 3 specifications:
If you can’t be bothered to read through the detailed meter descriptions below and you just want to know: What’s the cheapest, easiest meter that can measure pretty much everything? Then this Cornet 8 GHZ RF Meter (Uni-directional $179.90 + free shipping) will cover all your needs. This meter is much cheaper than the Tenmars below because it only measures radiation coming from one direction, whereas the Tenmars meter below measures radiation coming from all sides. This meter also only measures electrical and RF, wheras the Tri-Field measure magnetic fields as well. However, if price is key, then this is a very good choice, since it measures all RF devices (cell phones, cordless phone, WiFi, surveillance bugs, microwave ovens, etc.) from 1 MHz – 8 GHz. If you want the full-service radiation meter, so that you can measure everything in every situation, from one spot, then the Tenmars 8 GHZ RF Meter (3-directional, $345 + free shipping) is your best choice. Here’s an In-Depth Description of the Various Radiation Meters and their Pros and Cons: Handy Meter ($159.95) – This meter will measure radiofrequencies from cell towers, smart meters, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other wireless/cordless transmitters, as well as low frequency magnetic and electric fields from power lines, circuit boxes, lighting and appliances. This one only measures up to 100 microwatts/cm2, so there is a problem using in North America where our upper “safety” limit is 1000 microwatts/cm2 – you’ll know it’s unsafe, but you won’t know how bad it is. This one is also only single-axis, so you’ll have the tedium of having to measure at 8 different points/directions around in a complete circle – pausing at each new point to let it pick up the new reading – to get an idea of what radiation exists in any one spot. The good part about this meter is that it will give you the actual meter reading (e.g. 18 mW/m2) PLUS give you the color-coded ranges of safe/green-caution/yellow-unsafe/red. This meter covers 50 Hz – 8 GHz – so it will give you readings for most cell phones, wireless computers and cell towers. The newer generation of cordless phones and other technology on the 5.8 GHz frequency will also be picked up by this meter. More details here… (scroll down the page) Pocket PF5 Meter ($159.95) – Another really simple meter – but this ONLY measures electric and magnetic fields, which is either a beneficial feature, or a confusing one – depending on your needs. The PF5 measures electric and magnetic EMFs from house wiring, including those from appliances at home or at work, covering frequencies from 20 Hz to well over 50 kHz. This enables the PF5 to measure the higher frequency electric and magnetic fields emitted by induction cooking hobs, solar-panel inverters, ‘energy-saving’ compact fluorescent (CFL) lamps and LED lights. This one gives readings and has different colored lights: green-safe, yellow-caution, and red-unsafe. Electric fields range is 5 – 200 V/m and magnetic fields range: 0.2 – 20 mG, It is also really small (pocket sized) making it easily portable – which again, may be a positive or a negative, depending on what you want it for. More details here… (scroll down the page) ESI 24 EMF Monitor ($159.95) – This meter detects and displays all 3 EMF types at once: magnetic fields, electric fields, and radiowaves/microwaves simultaneously. It is fairly simple to interpret (there are red/yellow/green LED lights) – these lights indicate EMF level and are supported by a loudspeaker that gives an audible indication of field strengths. Sound frequency/intensity changes with increasing field strengths, but sound can be turned off if you like. This meter allows for quick and easy localization of the sources of different types of EMF. The display shows 5 different levels, ranging from extremely low (i.e. no significant radiation exposure) to too strong for prolonged exposure and distinguishes how much for each radiation type. Super easy and super sensitive. Electric fields range is 16Hz – 3kHz, magnetic fields range is 16Hz – 3kHz, and radiowave range is 50MHz – 10GHz. More details here… (scroll down the page) Trifield Meter MODEL TF2 ($168.00) – As you move up the price scale, you’ll notice you get more features and more accuracy. This meter is a 3-axis meter rather than a single-axis, like the meter above. This means that you don’t need to rotate around, but can simply stand in one spot and the meter will scan 360 degrees around you to give you the complete/total radiation level for that particular spot. This meter will test EMF pollution from “hot spots” in your home, office, or work environment so you can take steps for “prudent avoidance”. It’s completely self-contained, so no parts to lose. You get 3 meters in one – three axis for magnetic and extremely wide frequency response. This is actually an updated version of their original trifield model. Here are some of the upgrades:
This meter will also give you the actual radiation level, and measures up to 1000 microwatts/cm2. US and Canada upper allowable limit is 1000 microwatts/cm2. This meter covers 20 MHz- 6 GHz – so it will give you readings for most cell phones, wireless computers and cell towers. The newer generation of cordless phones and other technology on the 5.8 GHz frequency will also be picked up by this meter. More details here… 6 GHZ RF Meter (Uni-directional $119 + free shipping) – This meter is very reasonably priced and will measure 100 HHz – 6 GHz. It also measures electrical fields (power lines etc.) The only downside is that it is uni-directional only (not a tri-field meter). This means that you will have to rotate slowly in a circle, stopping and pausing at each point to get a measure of total radiation for any one spot. On the other hand, it makes it easy to pinpoint which direction the radiation is coming from! More details here… 8 GHZ RF Meter (Uni-directional $179.90 + free shipping) – This meter is much cheaper than the the Tri-Field below because it only measures radiation coming from one direction, whereas the Tri-Field meter below measures radiation coming from all sides. This meter measures electrical, RF, and magnetic fields as well. So if price is key, then this is a very good choice, since it measures all RF devices (cell phones, cordless phone, WiFi, surveillance bugs, microwave ovens, etc.) from 1 MHz – 8 GHz. More details… 8 GHZ RF Meter (Tri-Field, $345 – free shipping) – This meter is 3-axis (no need to rotate), it measures from .0001 microwatts/cm2 up to 3,000 microwatts/cm2 and it covers from 10 MHz – 8 GHz – so it will measure every wireless device around (including surveillance bugs!), plus leaving room for future technology developments. This meter also measures electrical fields. For the informed layperson (like myself) this is probably the best combination of needed features and ease of use. The downside is that this meter ships from Israel, so your shipping time is going to be a bit longer on this one (about 2 weeks). BUT the great thing is, the shipping is free! I have ordered from this company myself to test and everything went smoothly and the meter arrived in 2 weeks. As I said above, if you want to be able to test EVERYTHING, with ease – because this measures the radiation coming from all directions (tri-field), so you don’t have to keep turning and re-measuring, until you’ve measured a full circle – you can just stand in one spot, facing any direction and it will measure ALL the radiation coming from every direction to that spot – then this is the meter to get. More details here… For people who need to get more specific, there are more complicated meters for this, but of course, they are also much more expensive (thousands of dollars). You can also check with your local (or country’s) citizen action group as some have meters they will rent to you for a fraction of the purchase price – if they don’t have meters for rent, be sure and suggest this to them! Here’s also a list of helpful resources to get you started: Note: All prices listed are correct at time of writing, but of course, are subject to change. Detailed Techie Questions? Please note that I am not an engineer, nor an expert in this technology. I am just trying to figure things out for my own family and then sharing what I learn as I go along. So if you have any specific questions about RF Meters or anything technical, please speak to one of the sellers of this equipment (who I link to above), like Emil: Emil DeToffol Less EMF Inc 776B Watervliet Shaker Rd Latham NY 12110 USA +1-518-608-6479 We received some new questions about this recently: QUESTION: My 10 year old son and I have been reading your website because he is doing research for a science fair project. I need to purchase him a meter that gives him quantitative data for how much cell phone radiation occurs with a variety of phones. He will compare his data and present for the science fair. By no means, does this have to be 100% accurate, but he must give a good estimate and be knowledgable about the subject. I have seen the Cornet ED-75 as the one to get. I’m personally confused on the different meters out there after reading multiple sources. Could you help by letting us know from your experience which one would be the best, but not the most expensive? ANSWER: The Handy meter or Trifield model above would measure the full range of cellphones, and he can point it at the cell phone antenna to get the reading. I suggest he also measure cordless phones as many are very surprised that they can emit more than a cell phone (especially the 5.8 GHz ones). The ED-75 only goes up to 6 GHz, so it cannot measure some of the cellphones on the market. QUESTION: If I bought a uni-directional radiation meter, how would I calculate how much radiation a certain spot is being exposed to by the surrounding area? You mentioned starting north and turning the meter 15 degrees until it’s gone full circle. But then what do I do with the data to get an estimate of the amount of radiation in that spot? Do I add all the readings together or take the highest one? ANSWER: You just take the highest reading – because whatever side of your body is being exposed to that high level, doesn’t really matter – you are still being exposed to it and that’s the highest radiation that’s coming to that spot in the room. Find out what’s wrong with using enteric-coated capsules for probiotics. And why the culturing substrate (intrinsic supernatant) is so important to the functioning of the bacteria inside your body, and directly benefits your digestion. Learn about competitive exclusion; the nature of bacteria is mutual antagonism – they produce compounds to compete with any other bacteria in their environment. This environment could be a pill, a bottle, or your gut. Did you know that if you culture your own yogurt – using a powerful starter culture like Natren’s – that yoghurt will contain about 100 million c.f.u per serving? By comparison, Natren’s Healthy Trinity contains 30 billion c.f.u. per dose. Join us for this talk to discover why we need so much more beneficial bacteria today then 50 or 60 years ago. Or listen/download the audio of this session: In this week’s session, Natasha Trenev and I answer questions from Nellie, Brooke, Patsy, Edie, Chris, Desiree, Sarah, Wendy, Terry and Robert. | MICROBIOME: Indigenous Wisdom meets Science – Fermenting Foods | 18 juin 2018
What’s wrong with eating raw foods? And how are bacteria just like horses?? What did your great-grandmother know that you should know too? Fascinating deep dive into the healthy gut microbiome and fermented foods with world-renowned probiotic expert, Natasha Trenev, and me: “I’m only 12 minutes in, and this is already the most lucid and accurate explanation of the ecology of gut microbiome I’ve heard discussed. It’s rare to hear even practitioners discuss the species involved as organisms, in a true ecological sense of interaction with each other and their host and shuffling for space and resources that comes with that… and the consequences to our bodies under different stages of distress. If I take a deep breath when you ask me about fermented foods, or dumping a pile of probiotics in your shake after a round of Cipro, or start explaining why you’re having a histamine reaction after your friend told you to start slamming back Kombucha like its soda pop… watch this.” – Samantha Braun, Ecotones And if audio in your car, or on your iPod is more your style, you can listen to or download the mp3 audio here: If you have any further questions for Natasha or me – just leave them in the Comments section below! | Medicalizing Life’s Problems – Rather Than Solving the Root Issues | 26 oct. 2016
Here’s a little story from Dr. Goldberg for you, to kick off this topic: “We had a 47-year-old female patient, who following the advice of her Holistic, Functional Gynecologist, had a complete hysterectomy, plus a bilateral mastectomy based only on having the BRCA II gene. This was followed by a year of Diflucan prescribed by a local Naturopath and being placed on Thyroid Replacement Therapy because her T3 level was one point below normal. She now has silicone breast implants to boot. Pretty frightening, all in the name of being ‘natural’. We are increasingly seeing this type of scenario.” Dr. Paul Goldberg specializes in chronic disease reversal and healed himself of severe rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis in his twenties. Now in his sixties, he continues to experience robust health, but his daily supplement list consists of nothing more than a multi-vitamin. WHY? Because his daily, normal life supports the innate healing ability of the human body. We talk about some of these “common sense measures” in this teleseminar. And I have to say, it gave me a tremendous feeling of hope and vision for something I have believed in and promoted for a long time. As Dr. Goldberg says: “Odd how we are expected to conduct large scale, double-blind, case control studies on the employment of sunlight, fasting, liquid diets, emotional counseling, extended rest and sleep, pulling people off poisonous habits (e.g. drugs, alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, etc.) – what we view as common sense measures. Also, a great deal of time is given to each patient and effort is made to sort out etiological (disease-causing) factors.” For example, did you know that 1/3 of female patients are on thyroid hormone replacement – without the effort to first find out why the thyroid is unbalanced and employ natural corrective measures – and that it can take as little as 1 year (and as long as 7 years) of even natural or bio-identical thyroid supplementation for your own thyroid gland to atrophy and cease functioning? So how ‘natural’ are bio-identical hormones and dessicated pig thyroid (Armour Thyroid) if they cause your own thyroid gland to cease functioning? Having done two in-depth teleseminars on balancing hormones, this call really hit home for me in a number of areas – listen in and you’ll find out why and no doubt have a few ‘eureka’ moments yourself! Just click the PLAY button, or download it: Did you also know that in order to get your Vitamin D from sunlight, you shouldn’t shower for an hour afterwards – your body needs that fatty sweat layer to convert the sunlight to cholecalciferol? LOTS more gems in this call and hopefully you will feel empowered with renewed faith in the healing ability of your own body. | The Power of Feldenkrais Bodywork | 05 oct. 2016
Back in June, I was woken up out of a dead sleep with RANCHO LA PUERTA sounding in my head and the words written out in my mind’s eye. What the what? Write it down. So I wrote down: Rancho La Puerta. And immediately went back to sleep. In the morning I googled it and turns out it’s a famous health spa that’s been around since the ’40’s – who knew?! So of course I booked to visit there in September for 4 nights. https://blog.listentoyourgut.com/the-power-of-feldenkrais-bodywork/rancho3/Rancho La Puerta – Tecate, Mexico One of the main draws of this health spa is the non-stop activities from 6:30 am – 7:00 pm; from cross-fit to pilates and everything in between. Perusing the list, my gut drew me to the Feldenkrais classes, offered twice a day. I booked into those, along with 1 private session with the instructor, Donna Wood. My gut leading was interesting to me, because I had a series of 10 private Feldenkrais sessions (where the practitioner just worked on me) about 15 years ago and it was nice, but nothing remarkable. However, as I experienced that week, the difference with the group sessions is the instructor gives the group verbal instructions only. She won’t demo anything, as the point is for you to explore and find it within your own body. And THAT is what I found so powerful; learning the dialogue and conversations between the different parts of my body. Spending 45 minutes learning how to lift my hip using only a foot pressing lightly into the floor with a slight forward movement of the knee – virtually no effort at all. And voila, my shoulders are now lying flatter on the floor! And more importantly, STAYED that way for 2 weeks until I did 7 non-stop hours of manual labor out at my barn. https://blog.listentoyourgut.com/the-power-of-feldenkrais-bodywork/donna-wood/Donna Wood – Feldenkrais Maestro So I don’t know if it was Feldenkrais in the group session (vs private) that was so remarkable – or the instructor. Donna Wood is also a sculptor, black belt in Judo and Capoeira and dancer. So I suspect – like all therapies – that the practitioner plays a huge role in the experience/learning of this healing technique. You can share the benefits! Donna has SO generously provided 24 amazing Feldenkrais lessons you can practice at home – at no charge! I really encourage you to give this bodywork method a try and see what your body has to say about it. The brilliant thing about these Feldenkrais sessions from Donna is that you don’t need to have access to a computer – as they are audio-guided sessions. As I mentioned, Donna will not demo anything for you – even in a live session. YOUR body has to explore and discover the movement that feels good, that feels easy, that feels delicious. So being guided by these audios is very similar to what you’d experience in a live class with Donna – you just can’t peek to see what the other people around you are doing! The other difference is that in a live session Donna will tailor the class to the people present. There are thousands of Feldenkrais lessons, so if Donna sees that your knee is in trouble (she is able to just scan people’s bodies and see where the difficulties are), and someone else’s neck is really stiff, then she will tailor the class to help those people. So if you’re in San Diego (or visiting), definitely contact her to join in some of her live classes! I have grabbed the audio off each of her YouTube videos for you, so you can simply load them onto your mp3 player or iPod/iPhone and away you go. Here they are: Donna Wood Feldenkrais – Lesson 1 – DOWNLOAD MP3 Donna Wood Feldenkrais – Lesson 2 – DOWNLOAD MP3 Donna Wood Feldenkrais – Lessons 3-9 – DOWNLOAD Zipped File Donna Wood Feldenkrais – Lessons 10-16 – DOWNLOAD Zipped File Donna Wood Feldenkrais – Lessons 17-24 – DOWNLOAD Zipped File I would LOVE to hear from you, after you’ve done about 4-5 of these sessions and see if this bodywork is as transformative for you as it was for me. I would also be interested to hear from people who’ve already attended Feldenkrais classes with a different instructor – and then tried 3 or 4 of these sessions with Donna. HOW much difference does the instructor make? It would be cool to share our experiences, so don’t be shy! Just post in the Comments section below.
