Jack Riedy (Musician / Author / Music Critic)11 Sep 202501:14:51

Jack Riedy is an Author, Critic, Musician and Bonafide Prince O(+> Expert. In this conversation I picked Jack’s brain about Prince's influence on popular rock music as well as on Jack’s own artistic process. Jack just released an album from his eponymous project called Raw Deal. The album combines nostalgic elements with quirky character studies and groovy flair. It was great to talk to Jack about how the project came together, the meaning behind a few of the songs, how first became involved in music, what got him interested in criticism, and of course his favorite music that has accompanied him throughout his life.

Hugo Reyes (Violent Treatment)04 Sep 202501:37:08

Podcast Caption

Hugo Reyes is a writer, podcaster and zine maker. Hugo’s primary project Violent Treatment has existed in a few forms; a zine, a podcast, and recently a tape label (Check out Majesty). Violent Treatment in all of its forms is a great resource for learning more about what is happening in hardcore right now. At a time when Hardcore is bigger than ever Hugo has stayed true to hyping up newer bands and giving raw takes about the music that he likes. Hugo has also covered Chicago’s DIY scene in great detail in a two part series on his Medium page which I believe to be essential reading for anyone interested in learning more about Chicago music. We talk Hugo's first interests, his journey with Hardcore and DIY shows, and his newfound interest in House music and Footwork

Sam Sodomsky28 Aug 202501:20:55

Sam Sodomsky is a critic, musician, and podcaster. I first learned about Sam through the podcast Late-era which he co-hosted. Through Late-Era I was inspired to dig deeper into Sam’s writings on Bruce Springsteen and would see Sam pop up across the web covering more music that I was interested in. When I thought of inviting him on the show to coincide with the release of Track II (the lost albums boxset released by Springsteen this year) I thought I would check out his project The Bird Calls’ new record Melody Trail. I ended up loving the record and from there I plotted on what we could cover in under two hours.

We of course talk about Bruce, but we get into Sam’s parallel fascination with Metal, The Bird Calls, the music that he loves, his onstage wardrobe, and whatever happened to Welcome to Chicago.

Latter is the Chicago-Based project of Meredith Haines and Jon Alvarado (Beach Bunny). Meredith Joins the show to talk about the release of Latter’s latest EP entitled What Lives Inside of Me. We discuss the period between their last album (My Body Is My Sickness), the TikTok virality that followed, and how that experience - for better or worse - informed the creation of this most recent batch of songs. Our conversation touches on the writing partnership of Alvarado and Haines; how the two musicians come together to create something greater than the sum of their backgrounds. Meredith and I also get into her projects that preceded Latter, including her education in sound art and her noise project MAIR, which gets us into the political potency of noise. And we of course discuss, the one and only, My Chemical Romance.

After a cross country move from Wichita, KS to Chicago, with a few trips back and forth, Morpho released its debut EP 'Morpho Season', 5 captivating tracks that shine bright with guitar heroics and tender lyrics. I caught up with Kristyn about what its been having the record out in the world, as well as playing it live. We connect on growing up in Kansas and the disperate music scenes that exist between stretches of highway populated by mostly cows. We discuss the production of Morpho Season, the exercise of patience in putting together a record over years, knowing when a song is ready to be recorded, how Freaky Friday inspired Kristyn to play music, and more!

Marcus Nuccio (Wrong Numbers, Pet Symmetry, Ratboys)03 Jul 202501:03:26

Marcus Joins the show for a fantastic conversation about his new album Take A Beat from his project Wrong Numbers. You may know Marcus from his drumming in the highly adored Pet Symmetry and the fast-growing Ratboys. Wrong Numbers contains fun flourishes and invigorating musical moments that I've come to expect from Marcus' other projects.

In this episode we get into Marcus' history within the Chicago music scene, meeting the people he would end knowing to this day, an insane mixed bill show from 2013 getting into electronic music hardware, developing his solo songwriting process, collecting musical ideas for the Wrong Numbers project, lots of production talk (cool), abandoning sp*tify, mindfully listening to music, modding old ipods, and more (if you can believe it)

Fantasy Baseball Draft26 Jun 202500:57:47

Something from left field cometh! It’s another draft episode. This time Blake and Jack are building a full 10-man starting lineup to face off on the diamond. Since this is musicians we are talking about, we need to take a few things into consideration. Your hosts take different approaches to selecting who will represent their teams on the grass and dirt. Blake takes a more conceptual approach, aligning the ideal attributes of each position to a musicians output and skill in their projects. Jack takes a more strategic and holistic approach to his team, building a forceful opponent.

Don’t worry, this is still a music podcast.

Matt Kerner (Origami Button)19 Jun 202501:04:00

Matt Kerner is the drummer of the Chicago-based math rock band Origami Button. In this episode, Matt shares his love for bands like Incubus and Deftones, how high levels of fandom can be rewarding, utilizing your influences, making the distinction between music as a passion and career, the origin of Origami Button and the source of the band's longevity which has led them to exciting support slots with scene legends like The Fall of Troy and The Used.

Harper Boyhtari (Greet Death)12 Jun 202501:00:41

Harper Boyhtari joins the show to talk about Greet Death's new record Die In Love arriving June 27th via Deathwish Inc. I am very excited to bring this conversation with one of my favorite bands going. Harper and I get into the start of her and Gaval's songwriting partnership, her connection to Chicago, finding your voice and choosing the right words as a songwriter, Neil Young, Blink-182, Death Cab for Cutie, Jason Molina, and much more

From the jump when I discovered 2019's New Hell I was hooked with Greet Death's depressive distortion brought deeper with the vocal tag team of Harper Boyhtari and Logan Gaval. Greet Death knows how to take the listener on a journey, opting for asymmetrical song structures rather than repeating hooks. Three records in and Greet Death is taking their love for folk rockers like Neil Young to the next level, remaining noisy and heartfelt. Die In Love is a record of contrasts, its bright moments help to define the light from the dark. It might be their happiest record yet, but Greet Death is only giving a smirk.

Grab a pen and paper because we go through a lot.

Do You Like This: Guided By Voices22 May 202500:59:45

Do You Like Guided By Voices? Find out along with host Blake Correll and consigliere (co-host), Jack Tecca.

Guided By Voices are lo-fi power pop pioneers, writing songs that emerge from the static with dynamic instrumentation and undeniable hooks. There is a lot to discover about GBV with the help of Jack Tecca we'll explore that catalog and answer the question, Do You Like This?

Trash (Totally Cashed) - Part 215 May 202501:06:31

This is part 2 of my conversation with Trash of the eclectic Chicago rock band, Totally Cashed. If you haven't please go listen to my first interview with Trash.

TRIGGER WARNING: Verbal and Physical Abuse Mentioned.

Blake Recommends: The album The Sacrificial Code by Kali Malone

Trash (Totally Cashed) - Part 108 May 202501:05:51

Trash is the singer/guitarist of the eclectic Chicago rock band Totally Cashed. From bagels to country (supposedly) to getting totally jacked, there is a lot to discover about Trash and their band. From Totally Cashed's first release Babeland (2018) you can hear a band that doesn't take a lot seriously except for the music they write. Following some EPs and Singles, Totally Cashed crashed into my awareness with The World's First Country Band (2023). Blending genres with a heavy tilt towards rocking out, the band's music is seriously fun but not at the expense of its quality. Without having seen then live I had heard a lot about Totally Cashed; they are widely known in the independent scene around Chicago for their wild shows and non-musical antics. In this interview we dive deep into the bands reputation, history and whats next.

This is the first of two parts. Stay tuned for part two, next week.

Blake Recommends: The album Pirouette by Model/Actriz

Grace Notary (16 on Center)01 May 202501:06:53

Grace Notary is currently the brand marketing & partnerships manager at 16 On Center, a hospitality group that produces local festivals and represents Chicago’s most iconic independent music venues -  Salt Shed, Empty Bottle, Thalia Hall, The Promontory, and SPACE.

This was a wonderful conversation breaking out LWYL's usual artist interviews branching into the wider music industry. I was intrigued to learn about the ins and outs of Grace's work at some of Chicago's most prominent independent venues. I hope you learn something new!

Blake's Recommendation:

Will Lindsay (Buying Fireworks In Indiana, Caracara, Steady Hands)24 Apr 202502:03:22

Will Lindsay joins the show to talk about his new project Buying Fireworks In Indiana. I originally met Will through interviewing his other project Caracara back in 2022 while they were on tour in Chicago. Through some circumstances of fate Will found himself living in Chicago and since him and I have become fast friends. This chat encompassess Will’s journey of founding Buying Fireworks In Indiana, the creative challenges that have fueled it, how current and past experiences have helped from a new venture, tackling the abstract challenge of making art on social media, and of course the music that helped inspire it.

Will Lindsay is a musician and storyteller who’s spent the past decade chasing songs and dodging algorithms. He fronts the critically acclaimed Philadelphia indie-punk band Caracara, and before that, made noisy, joyful chaos as W.C. Lindsay. He’s toured the world, lost sleep in vans, and somehow managed to make music that people actually felt.
Now, he’s pouring all of that into Buying Fireworks in Indiana—a solo project that blends indie electronic music, cinematic video essays, and longform writing into something you can’t quite describe at parties. The project is a search—for feeling, for meaning, for stories that don’t disappear into the void of infinite scroll.
Shaped by years of DIY shows, overnight drives, and conversations in strange corners of the world, Buying Fireworks in Indiana is part travelogue, part love letter to subculture. It’s a living archive of underground music, fleeting moments, and people chasing something just out of frame.
Musically, the project lives between genres—in a space Lindsay calls “drum & bliss”—a blend of indie electronic, future garage, post-punk, and melodic drum & bass. It’s emotionally charged and built for movement: dancing, driving, drifting, disappearing.
The rest of the story unfolds in essays and videos—dispatches from the road, meditations on art and impermanence, and quiet glimpses of the collaborations that become the songs.
Buying Fireworks in Indiana is a listener-reader-supported project. If the music hits, if the stories get under your skin—becoming a paid subscriber is how you keep it alive. Premium supporters help ensure the next chapter is not only possible, but honest, wild, and worth doing.
In a digital landscape that can amplify and erase with the same swipe, Lindsay leans into the contradiction—making art that holds tension between nostalgia and progress, tradition and invention. Buying Fireworks in Indiana isn’t just his journey; it’s an open invitation to hop in and come along.

Seamus Kreitzer (Disaster Kid)17 Apr 202501:07:45

Seamus Kreitzer is the singer/guitarist for the twangy and jangly Disaster Kid, who just released an excellent new EP called Rare Bird. In this interview we discuss the inception and recording of this new record as well as the transitional point that it represents for the band. This was a very laid back conversation that veered into the inception of Disaster Kid, weekender touring, being from the Twin Cities (Minneapolis & St. Paul), which obviously led us to talking about The Replacements, and we of course talk about the music that Seamus loves.

Stream Rare Bird now!

Blake's Recommendation at the end of the episode is for the new Djo album The Crux
